35 years later Child’s Play (1988) still holds up as one of the best killer doll movies ever. The quality and care that went into it never fails to impress me. It’s not a major moment, but (during the opening sequence) when lightning strikes, blowing up the toy store, it’s truly an amazing set of shots depicting the destruction (the debris flying over the makeup counter, the front windows’ glass exploding out, etc.). Bill Butler (the legendary cinematographer behind Jaws, etc.) would again work his magic here.

To have created not just all the Good Guy dolls, but their packaging, their accessories (tool kits), a clip of the animated cartoon, pajamas, and the batteries (THE BATTERIES!) was a feat of prop design/manufacturing in itself. So thoroughly creating this product line helped ground the movie in its own higher level of reality.

Director Tom Holland, just three years after he directed Fright Night, made two of the most iconic 80s horror movies. Like John Carpenter he never made another great movie once they got into the 1990s, but they both had some serious mean streaks. With great casting all around, the awesome Brad Dourif steals the show as serial killer Charles Lee Ray aka the voice of Chucky. So much love for this genre classic 💙😱
