There was a woman who worshipped the sun. A poet who worshipped not the moon shaded by the sun’s rays, but the sun itself, radiating the most blistering heat and glow. A poet who gave herself to the temple of that sun. That poet is Kim Seung-hee, who announced that she would “never reconcile with realism” (“Siin-ui yeonghon”; The soul of the poet), who grappled fiercely with the reality women face. This poet who “dared to imagine” her “flame on an eternal orbit / returning to the sun / Always, and evermore” (“Taeyang misa”; Mass for the sun) is now already in her seventies. After fifty years of a celebrated career, in which she published eleven volumes of poetry, including her latest astonishing collection Danmujiwa beikeon-ui jinsilhan saram (Changbi, 2021; The truthful human of pickled radish and bacon), she still leads the audience to look forward to what might come after this book.
Lee Kyungsoo, from “[Essay] From the Priestess of the Sun to the Poet of the Earth”, published in Korean Lit Now, June 14, 2022 (translated by Emily Jungmin Yoon)

Hope is Lonely
by KIM SEUNG HEE
Translation from the Korean by Brother Anthony of Taizé
People often say that despair is lonely
but I reckon that hope is even lonelier.
Despair might be termed the peace of gravity.
For a pig to become bacon
all it has to do is relax and subside into a pool of blood . . .
and still its head is grinning pink. Despair
has a similar warmth of sorrow.
Hope sometimes provides first aid
but there may sometimes be people who dislike hope’s first aid,
maybe.
Reckoning that despair offers more comfort,
following a bright ray of sunlight trembling in the breeze,
you came from afar to obtain medicine
but being already convinced that the medicine has no effect
your sickness grew worse.
The cactus – hope’s totem pole . . .
Even on a night when all the words flew away from the dictionary,
even at that moment like blue lightning
standing quietly before a chair after taking off my shoes,
the word hope barely managed to remain
and because of that one word, I cannot discard everything.
The word hope prevents the world’s ruins from being completed.
Beating my breast
and asking why I don’t let the ruins continue,
rather because of that hope
there are frighteningly lonelier times.
The cactus – hope’s totem pole . . .
it’s an order to love still, more, fully, until blood flows freely
Though I want to escape, put an end to it,
that bright sunlight being shared out for no reason, such a waste,
like blood spreading in water . . .
hope and I,
hope is a life sentence.
Hope is lonely.

Moving
Moving went from:
A high school drama
to superheroes
to spy thriller
to bromance
to slow burn romance
to Kill Bill level action gore
to slice of life showing the most heartwarming moments between the adults and kids,
to the ultimate enemy stand-off,
to tragic backstories of the so called villains,
to found family
to much needed family reunions!
Moving aced all genres and emotions!
Moving has reshuffled my entire all time favourite Kdrama list - Kingdom stays at the Top, Moving comes second, followed by Hot Stove League and Reply 1988.
I have so much to write , so much to unpack - I’m rewatching it and will keep posting my thoughts!
I so love this drama and every single member of the cast! Everyone nailed the role they were given - big or small!
