Hyrule x Reader

The traveler is an incredible person all around. Kind, fun, adventurous, thoughtful—and don’t even get me started on what an incredible hero he is… but he doesn’t see it that way. Imposter syndrome is one heck of a mindset, and boy is it something he’s got.. imposter syndrome is something that makes you downplay your abilities and accomplishments, and if you ever asked the traveler if he lived up to the hero name, or his friends’ heroic abilities—or even the spirit of courage he’d tell you he didn’t. He’d negate the idea and change the subject before you even had the chance to refute him on it. Such was the exact reason he hadn’t confessed to a soul his feelings for you—especially not to you. You were incredible in his eyes, a sight to behold and an even bigger honor to be friends with. Although, he figured next to someone like the captain, the champion or even the smith he figured he couldn’t compete. In his mind he wasn’t even in the competition, let alone a contender in this race. He was just a traveler, someone who’s heroics were that of a happenstance. Right place right time kind of thing. Though, this longing and hearing for you was making him sick, keeping it to himself, he felt like a grocery bag with too many heavy items in it—ready to break and spill out all the contents. The contents, of course, being the way he thought of you, the dreams he had at night of laying by you watching the stars and making up your own constellations, whispering and giggling at what one another said. He’d kill and die for you, if only for a fraction of your time in return. He had to tell someone.

And oh, poor unsuspecting Sky. Sweet thing, he only wanted to help.

“Sky can i talk to you?” The traveler asked as he walked up to the hero, who was whittling down some wood to make into a little figurine for the ever bored sailor, who’d spent far too long at camp without something to do(the vet was going to strangle him had someone not suggested the boy go out and find a lake to play in while sky made a toy for him).

Sky looked up with a soft smile and baby blues the traveler was sure you’d prefer to his own dark brown eyes; they didn’t shine like sky’s did. “Sure! What’s up?” He sat down his project(which would be much to the vet’s dismay when the sailor returned and it wasn’t finished) to give the traveler his full attention.

“I have a confession to make. It’s nothing bad but-…..actually yes it is.” He started, already feeling defeated as his shoulders slumped, not wanting to admit it but also wanting to get it off his chest at the very same time. “I’m afraid I’ve caught feelings for y/n—which normally wouldn’t be a problem—only, they’re y/n, and I’m unfortunately nobody they’d like..”

“Are you kidding??? Of course they like you!!! They’d be thrilled to know!!!” Sky got up and the traveler panicked.

“Sky, where are you going—“

“To tell y/n! It’s nonsense you think they won’t like you! Like I said they’ll be thrilled!”

“Sky, no, please that—please don’t…” he stopped following the young man, looking like a sad wet cat with how defeated he felt. He was sure this was the end of your friendship. Farore, strike him down now. It’s over for him. He could’ve swore he saw the events of his life flash before his eyes as he watched Sky make his way over to you. He said something the traveler couldn’t hear, but he assumed it was the song of his death March. His eulogy. ‘There lies Link, our dear sweet traveler, who despite everything he went through, who saved his Hyrule from true doom and despair, despite the efforts of everything that tried to stop him from doing so, died of a broken heart—‘

In his lamenting, you had made your way over to him with soft eyes and the saddest smile. “—Link.” Your voice broke through his thoughts and you were glad it had finally not fallen on deaf ears. His eyes widened when he noticed you standing in front of him and he suddenly felt his breakfast pushing at the top of his throat, wanting to escape the twisting and turning of the nervous butterflies the rushed the home it had made in his stomach.

“Hi.” You said exasperatedly in a laugh. “What’s this about you saying you’re ‘nobody I’d like’? Of course I like you?”

“But why?” He finally broke. “Why would you? I’m not—I’m not a real hero—and I’m not strong like the rancher or skilled and talented like the smith or suave like the captain and Hylia knows I can’t cook like the champion, and—“

You put a hand on his cheek and kissed him. His words died in his throat and he melted, every bit of tension, every single thought—it all melted away the moment your lips touched his. You pulled away with a smile, wiping away the tear caught on the edge of his eyelashes.

“You don’t have to be. Link I don’t care if you’re not strong or skilled and talented or suave or can cook—I wouldn’t care if you were. I wouldn’t even care if you weren’t a hero—because that’s not why I like you. Din—I love you, Link. I love you because you’re sweet, and thoughtful, and caring and you put yourself before others—granted it’s sometimes—heck, oftentimes to your own detriment but regardless! You’re amazing, and I love you…”

The traveler couldn’t speak. He was at a total loss for words.

“…Link..?”

“…thank you…” he pulled you into a tight hug and you smiled sadly, hugging him back.

“Of course…” you said and let him take his time and break away on his own. Once he did, you smiled sadly again as you watched him wipe his tears.

“So-…are-… are we…”

“Yes. We are.” You said definitively and smiled when he lit up. He pulled you in again and gave you a kiss that was broken shortly after when the veteran yelled at the sailor for following him around and asking him questions about his magical items. You then looked over to see sky, frantically whittling down the toy that was meant to be finished by the time the boy returned to camp.

“..whoops.” The traveler laughed nervously. “..we’re gonna not tell the vet I pulled sky away from his work… he’s not the best to be around when he’s mad…” he said and you covered your mouth to keep you from laughing. Though, even if the vet did come to drag your boyfriend away and tell him off, the both of you were sure it wouldn’t ruin your day. Not after the moment you two shared.

You make me want to go and read that Unordinary, is it worth it

IMO it is worth it

This is a long post but I need to get every thought and side about this comic out there.

Before I try and persuade you to read it, I’m gonna say that a lot of people like to hate on unordinary.

But there’s also a lot of really hard-core fans (like me lol)

I think the reason a lot of people like to hate on it is because the writing can be slow at times because of the format, which is webtoon.

When it comes to original webtoon creators, unless they’re on hiatus, they profit off of weekly episodes you can choose to buy or can choose to wait for (obviously a lot of people pirate them, but whatever I’m definitely not guilty of it ;))

OK so let’s get into it.

A short synopsis of unordinary:

In the world of unordinary mostly everyone is given a power known as an aura, most of the time it is hereditary (to be honest I’m really not sure if you can be unique) they grow into their ability and are able to utilize a different ages, some people never get an ability they are known as “cripples” (ik that word has negative irl connotations it’s literally what they are called I’m sorry 😭) the story follows the character John Doe, a cripple, as he attends Wellston Private High School. As well as a banned book called Unordinary, that is said to have caused a spike in vigilantism.

Now on to why I like it 😚

The story of UnO to me, first of all is very nostalgic, I started really getting into it in 2020 during March (quarantine) though I was reading it in 2019 during August I believe, but at that time I didn’t finish it bc of laziness.

During quarantine though I was ON those updates.

Second, to me, the character of John Doe is very well written.

Without super spoilers, it’s very realistic to have someone have their whole ideology’s set up in their brain and then have it completely broken down in the matter of a few weeks because of events that brings them a lot of stress.

Especially when you’ve been constantly subjected to the negative end of these beliefs that you had a hard time believing in to begin with.

And I think, in recovering the character, it was also quite realistic, because it does take time to change, and to still not be quite “changed” or instantly forgiven by the people around you.

The characters have good stories and pasts, they’re all unique and interesting.

Also THERE’S NO PLOT ARMOR.

IF THEY GET BEAT THEY GET BEAT.

Unless you count Arlo who literally wears armor lol

But besides the writing… 🤭

I love the tropes.

As a consumer of writing, and like anime, manga, whatever, it’s really hard to find a good story about a character that is a heel-face turn to the negative side 😭

And I’ll be the first fan to admit that the heel-face turn in unordinary, also isn’t as well written as I would like it to be, but I’m also not a writer and I KNOW how hard it can be to even write one to begin with-

Uru-Chan (the creator)

-It’s a struggle, and props to Uru for making a pretty good one 👍

And honestly, kind of rarely, the beginning of unordinary is very good in its own way.

Uru-Chan was obviously going for a very comedic action in the beginning of the comic, and the characters, designs and actions reflect that very well, and honestly, I ate it up.

She even admitted to not really knowing the way she was going with the story in the beginning, and usually that’s a red flag in writing, but I think she did really recover the story.

The comic did end up like straightening out I guess, and now it does have a normal storyline, that is obviously planned out probably at least a YEAR in advanced.

So yeah Uru-Chan ate I fear, she’s a good writer I take no criticism, way better than some OTHER webtoon OG creators, not naming names…

Also she was acknowledged by DC or Marvel idrk in an art piece acknowledging the future of super hero comics, with Seraphina being shown in the art piece (I SWEAR THIS HAPPENED I CANNOT FIND THE ART PIECE 😭😭😭)

Ok so the cons…

Obviously kind of slow writing. Me personally, I don’t really care for the chapters about Remi, Blyke, and Isen, I usually skip over them, but if there’s get a new chapter ONLY ABOUT THEM, I have to wait a week for another chapter and hope and pray it isn’t about them again.

It’s not even that their arcs are boring I just don’t really care 😭😭😭

I’m sure it’s someone else’s fave parts tho lol.

Next, the art style.

With 0 hate to Uru-Chan

The art style is simple, it has a sharper style, but it is kinda goofy.

Uru has a team that work with her in illustrations and coloring, and she simplifies her art style in order to tell the story faster.

The way they walk is kinda silly lol.

Also they’ll just have like one eye every once in awhile, maybe no eyes lol, only if the scene calls for it to be that way.

This is all from one chapter I was too lazy to go to other ones.

It’s silly, but honestly I barely notice it sometimes.

I think it’s like an attention tactic, to take attention off certain characters to make other character be focused on.

Like how BG characters always have brown hair and brown eyes in anime but the MC’s will have blue hair or smth.

Maybe I’m biased but I can’t really think of any other cons 🤷‍♀️

Conclusion

Unordinary is a good story to binge, but is up to everyone’s to decide if it’s their taste, like most things.

Despite me not really being into super hero stuff, I do really like the story (it’s not extremely super hero-ish tho, it’s actually illegal to be one in the story 😭)

Also John is a very pretty man 🫣

It’s a school story that is now deviating from the base story of being ONLY at Wellston, we have been moving into another arc for while now, and the season finale is very soon, meaning it will be going on hiatus soon, so honestly now probably is the best time to start reading if you like having a conclusion.

It’s not a series finale tho, so she’ll be back 😙👍

I’m not very good at writing analysis’ or anything adjacent to it because my thoughts are all over the place, but I hope this makes at least a little sense and helps you out 😭

But yeah IMO, it’s a good read.

ok so I'm thinking about being in a movie w our fav actor in the world: harry 🤩 and for the purposes of this concept ofc there's going to be some spicy scenes involved 😌 and maybe you're a bit newer to the acting scene and and you know this stuff is going to come up, but it's just a bit nerve wracking bc it's harry and he looks like that and you've always had a little crush on him 😌one day you're eating lunch together in a common area on set and he asks how you're feeling about things so far, and you say everything is really great but there's maybe a few things you're nervous about and he would immediately lift his head and say "please let me know if i ever do anything you're not okay with, it's really important to me that you're comfortable and feel safe with what we do" and you nod, really glad that's something he takes so seriously 😔then he asks what scenes you're nervous about even though he already has a pretty good idea, and you say "you know... the ones where we're kissing and- doing other stuff" and he's trying so hard not to smile bc he can tell you're actually a little freaked out, but it's so cute the way you blush and won't quite meet his eyes 😌 but first he's ofc gonna try and make you feel better so he says "it's really nothing to stress about, the intimacy coordinators are amazing and they make sure you're okay with everything we do" and you nod, still looking down at your food, and say "but i still feel like I'm just going to embarrass myself, you know? it's easy to run lines by yourself, but you can't really practice this kind of thing" and he nods, wanting to make sure you feel heard, and bc he really does understand 😔

he remembers how stressed he was about this kind of thing when he started acting, and he wishes he would have had someone to talk to like this 😔 then he gets a little idea 😌 he says "i have a bit of an idea, and it's completely okay if you don't want to do something like this, but if you're worried about how the pacing or whatever will go, we could definitely practice it a few times before we actually shoot the scene? that way there's no surprises, and we'll be a little more prepared" and you're shocked that he cares enough to suggest something like this, but also very into the idea 😌 you agree, and then he drops the subject so you don't get too freaked out bc he's nice like that 😔 that day you both get to go home early bc they're working on other scenes, and harry ofc walks you to your car 😌 he says "so about our talk earlier..." and you're blushing immediately, trying to hide how flustered he makes you so you say "yeah?" and he goes "I mean, I've got nothing going on for the rest of the evening, so if you're up for it we could do some practicing 😌" and you are also very down for that so you agree 😌 you end up going back to his place, and you're feeling a little awkward but he does everything he can to make you comfortable in his space, offering you water and anything you need :( you end up in his living room looking through the script, you run a few scenes where it's just taking to get warmed up, and then you flip to the first kissing scene 😌

it's pretty passionate, your characters are supposed to be confessing their love for each other so ofc it's a big deal 😌 you look up at each other, not exactly sure how to say "anyways let's kiss" but then he takes over and says "why don't we just go for it? let's just run the whole scene, and it's ok if it's a little awkward, I think it's best to get a full run through to see what we're working with" and you think that's a pretty good idea, so you start the scene 😌you get into it pretty quickly, and before you know it you're supposed to be kissing 😌 you stop and look at him, and say "and now we're supposed to-" and he says "I know, we don't have to if you're not feeling it though" and you shake your head saying "no, we can do it" and then it's a few seconds of looking at each other before he just goes for it 😌 he 100% takes your face in his hand to tilt your head however he wants it, and he puts his other hand on your waist 😌 and he is a good kisser, like so good you almost forget what you're supposed to be doing for a second, but then you snap out of it and do what your character is supposed to do 😌 so you both get really into it, and then you pull away a little flushed and say "it's says- I'm supposed to be on your lap for the next part, but if you don't want to do that here we can just-" and he says "I'm fine with whatever you want to do" and you think for a second before swinging your leg over his and getting settled in his lap 😌 he has his hands on your hips to keep you steady, and in this position you're up close to his face so you're noting how pretty his eyes are 😌

he sees you smile a bit and he says "what?" and you say "you just have really pretty eyes" and that makes him blush 😌 then you say "you know, if 16-year-old me knew she would someday be making out with harry styles, I think she would lose it" and he laughs saying "oh so you had a little crush on me?" and you nod, and he's soooo cheeky about that 😌 then he says "well if it makes you feel better, i had a crush on you too" and you're very surprised and don't really believe him, but he says "I'm serious, when i found out you were in this movie I freaked out, and I think I was probably more nervous for the kissing scenes than you were" and you're just staring at him like 😶 and then say "and now that you know me?" and he says "if I'm being honest, i like even more" 😌 you say "that's good, because i still have a massive crush on you" and then you're both just so smiley 😌 he says "think we should run it again?" and you nod, even though the script is the last thing either of you are thinking about😌 he takes initiative again and and puts his hands on your face, you have your fingers in his hair at the back of his head 😌

5. What sports do you play/have you played?

i played badminton as a kid. i did ultimate before i realized that would be too much running and now i do spikeball, which is excellent for people who hate sports. but i seriously do love spikeball because as someone who doesn't really Sport it's not too hard (minimal amount of running, focus on hand eye coordination and reflexes) so it's accessible to people who aren't athletic (me)

i’m in senior year of highschool and where i’m from ‘tutoring’ is more like extra classes you take to get ahead of the lessons before you actually study it in school,, it’s just to help you do better and it’s optional whether you take it or not,, i take it bc i don’t want to fail my test at the end of the year which is much like SATs,, and they separate us into either science or socials studies classes, i chose science bc i’m not very good at my native language and out of the science subject i’m doing the worse at math which sucks bc math matters the most out of them all :< but i’ve been encouraging myself by saying i have 10 more months left so hopefully things works out by then

oh my gosh ur school works so differently than when i was in hs! granted it was only like two years ago LOL but damn... sats are wild... i would aay dont stress to much but ik its kind of inevitable! i do know that colleges now are not as harsh with scores and sometimes dont require it tho! i got into a good uni and my score were laughable HAHAAA and omg yes 10 more months is practically forever away! try and keep all your important notes though!!! keep it all in one place as a reference folder and try and write stuff if you can rather than typing bc it helps you retain info better for the test! ik time goes by fast but as long as you take it day by day and be productive and not overwork yourself, you'll succeed! its so cool though that you're taking extra classes to get ahead, thats rly admirable! my ap classes were awful in hs so im sending you lots of love and support! if you ever need help with anything lmk! my twitter user is the same as my user on here so hmu!

um. i feel like there's definitely things i'm not thinking of but the your blue eyed boys series and its sequel series. god. i think about it all the time. i used to re-read the whole thing every year but i haven't in awhile. something about steve's complete and utter dedication to bucky, his tenacity in figuring out a way to help him despite having no fucking clue where to start just does something to me. the things they carried kind of collectively fucked up my entire friend group in high school. this is me trying haunts me. tiny houses. oof. there are definitely more not-fic examples but i can't think of them atm bc i barely read anything besides fic lately.

13. What is a subject matter that is incredibly difficult for you write about? What is easy?

maybe grief. i have a hard time putting the small quiet moments of loving someone into words. things that resonate with me personally are sometimes easier to write and sometimes harder, it just depends how i'm doing and what i'm writing.

17. Talk to me about the minutiae of your current WIP. Tell me about the lore, the history, the detail, the things that won’t make it in the text.

okay i'm gonna talk about shadow even though i'm not really actively writing it right now bc i've been thinking about it for REASONS and bc its my beefiest wip. its one of the million fics spawned by a buddie playlist you made me (MWAH!) inspired by one particular song on there. a very specific scene of baby eddie at a college party with his sister meeting a very out and very queer and slightly older buck and just losing his whole ass mind came to me on my work commute.

so basically the fic started with this mental image of buck in a crop top and glitter - you can see him here lovingly drawn by @demonlandline 😍😍😍 like the image was SO clear in my head and still is and i still can't believe i get to look at him eep

but then its sort of spiralled out into this much larger story of eddie exploring his queerness and facing the ideas of who he was supposed to be and i think i'm probably gonna project a lot of my catholic bullshit and thoughts about my own queerness and all the other reasons i am obsess about eddie into the story. and i think it will be a beast to write, because there will be some fun scenes and i'm planning for a lot of smut but there will be a lot of heavy shit too. so it'll be awhile before i can focus on it but. i'm excited about it.

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

i was really really nervous to write Q, because I'd never really fleshed out an OC before but mostly because they're nonbinary and i'm cis and i just didn't want to fuck up.

36. They say to Write What You Know. Setting aside for a moment the fact that this is terrible advice…what do you Know?

sex?! hah. there's a reason i'm so comfortable writing smut. 🤷🏻‍♀️ parenting. healthy communication and healthy romantic relationships. i guess i could write more about gardening or sewing or taking care of an iguana or cooking or any of my other weird/random experiences/interests but i don't think i've really worked any of that into my writing yet. i definitely know way too much about higher education in the us but i have no interest at all in writing about that :)

Are you named after anyone? Yes! I was named after a beloved great-aunt of my mother's. It is a unique spelling of a semi-common name, so I'm not tellin' it here. As for my internet name (Skye, short for Skye_Writer or SkyeWriter30 or whatever), I chose that myself because I like puns.

When was the last time you cried? I almost cried yesterday thinking about something that I can't remember now. It was either a movie or tv episode, or maybe a book? Maybe? I cry at the slightest provocation, at least when it comes to media, so yeah.

Do you have any kids? Nope! And very happy that way. My siblings both have kids, though, and I very much love those kiddos, but I do not ever want any of my own.

What sports do you play/have you played? I played girls' softball when I was ten or eleven and it was against my will.

Do you use sarcasm? Yes. Constantly. It is my conversational bread and butter.

What's the first thing you notice about people? Usually? Their hair or clothes. Things that make them identifiable, stuff like that.

What's your eye color? Dark brown. (Though in more direct light they look kind of amber-golden, which I love.)

Scary movies or happy endings? Happy endings all the way! I am not a huge fan of downer endings, or endings that are bleak for bleakness' sake. I don't mind an ambiguous ending (like say, Inception), but I much prefer happy endings, or at least happy-for-now endings.

Any talents? Not really? I guess? I don't know. I'm good at picking up new crafts and such, I guess. I don't know. I'm so bad at actually looking at myself objectively. Sigh.

Where were you born? Long Beach, California. I'm only telling you this because I live nowhere near Long Beach, California anymore.

What are your hobbies? Writing and reading, mostly. I also enjoy cozy-type video games (also Pokemon) (basically just any kind of game where you don't have to fight things, or if you do, the fights don't require good reflexes). I crochet a lot, too; I'm currently making an amigurumi dragon and having fun with it. I also enjoy doing puzzles, and I keep meaning to pick up my ukulele or ocarina and get better with those.

Do you have any pets? Yes! We have a 2-year-old dog who's extremely rambunctious, and then four cats. I love them all, tho one of the cats is sometimes a jerk.

How tall are you? About 5'7" or 5'8" (so around 1m70cm or so??). Middling tall is I guess how you'd describe it.

Favorite subject in school? English, a thousand times over. Runners-up include Chemistry (which I took two courses on in uni), and Math (I took Calculus for fun in uni). Also I really enjoyed the Film classes I took for my Film Studies minor in university.

Dream job? In an ideal world where I was not actively hindered by my own brain, I would be a published author or something. But honestly, I'd settle for something simple enough that I wouldn't stress about it (anxiety is a lame-ass BITCH), that I could also sit down while doing (back pain? ALSO a lame-ass bitch).

who does not know of the beautiful (name)? the sweet goddess of grief, misery and darkness that somehow holds the softest heart known to man. the goddess that comes to place gentle hands on children at the loss of their parents, the same goddess that passes entire villages on to hades. the same goddess that finds herself infatuated with her superiors.

the endless.

living as a young goddess was..stressful. you had too much to do every second of the day, and you begin to wonder how your elders have done this for so long. the life seems luxurious, you stay beautiful forever—young forever with very rare challenges. there are very few weapons that can kill you, and when you bleed it’s a beautiful gold color that is poisonous to your enemies. what more could you ask for?

that’s how you felt at first, your first hundred years or so of life were fun. you spent your time partying and dealing with the few duties you had. this was a prime time in greece and rome, and as both countries had roman and greek versions of you, you spent significant time in both places. the most you think you dealt with in this time was the peloponnesian war as well as the persian war, the misery that followed was plentiful. to you, it appeared over the area in a deep murky fog, hard to see through and even harder to relieve yourself of.

despite having a negative function, you definitely found yourself being rather positive more often than not. you didn’t have time to succumb to the misery nor the grief that your subjects went through nearly everyday. because of this alone, you found the roman and greek gods warming up to you fairly quickly. their original hostility was understandable, you didn’t have any blood relation to them and practically popped out of nowhere. i mean, technically, you did. destiny formed you himself, out of clay and his own power. you didn’t harness any of it, though, only gaining immortality among other things.

you believed that you were put here for a reason, part of a prophecy long lost to the centuries. after all, the greeks were not the first to roam this earth. your endless were. the ones who’d given you life were here following their parents; night and day. you felt honored to be created by the eldest, because if he created you then you had a larger purpose. something to look forward to, if you will.

in the meantime, you’d tend to your place within greece’s ideals of polytheism. you’d act as your own priestess, it kind of amused you to see people remark at the resemblances between you and the marble statue of you above the temple. you’d only hum, providing a soft smile and pretend to be bashful at the comparison. you were no prophet, but you did know how to help those wallowing in their misery. you knew how to relieve grief, and how to pass it on to your elder “sister” euphrosyne who was your exact opposite. the sweet goddess of cheer, joy, and mirth. you’ve happily come across her many times as you delivered people from their misery to her warm embrace of joy.

“sister,” you call softly, “do you think i am permanent?” euphrosyne looked up at you from her place on the balcony, nimble hands working on a painting she’d began a couple of weeks ago. worry flits across her face, a deep frown forming where a calm smile had once been. euphrosyne places her painting utensils down, wiping her hands on a cloth and inspecting her hands before making her way to you. she kneels in front of you, gently clasping her hands around your head, “(name), of course you are. who has put such thoughts in your mind? misery will live as long as joy does, and you will not whither no matter what happens. grief is permanent, death is forever. as long as death lives, so shall you.”

you purse your lips to attempt to fight tears, feeling pitiful for having such thoughts. how could joy treat misery with such gentleness? oh, how you loved her. you look away from her before meeting her eyes, “i am not of you, euphrosyne. i was formed of an endless, not born or nursed like a babe. i am practically nothing but a walking shell.” euphrosyne’s face twists into an expression you haven’t quite seen before. it’s a mix of grief and disbelief, and a twinge of anger in her soft eyes.

“you cry like i do, do you not?” you nod, but it isn’t enough for your elder sister. she stands up, forcing your chin upwards to see her, “answer me, sister.” she watches your eyes flitter, once away from her, then back to her face, then away again. you’re fighting yourself, but euphrosyne knows you very well. you will give in eventually, “i do, euphrosyne.” she hums in satisfaction, wiping the fresh tears that slipped down your cheeks. her hands don’t move, though, “and do you laugh, feel joy, happiness, love as i do?”

“yes.”

euphrosyne’s tone is sharp as she continues, “then you are not a shell, (name). shells can do nothing but mimic, not think for themselves. what you express is genuine feeling, you make your own decisions on how things do and don’t make you feel. you love endlessly, and are so gentle with your subjects. do not let such thoughts cloud you, nor your judgement.”

you still feel dumb for such thoughts, but you’d listen to your sister for now. there was no reason to continue to have thoughts that weren’t so much as close to true. you know your limits, euphrosyne knows your limits, so you shall calm the storm raging in your mind for now. your soft lips break into a sad smile, leaning into your sister’s touch before you stand to your full height. your arms wrap around her before you can think about it, and her beautiful laugh fills the air. “never worry yourself with such things, my dear little sister. even if you are not blood to me, you will still be my kin no matter what comes to us.”

“you are my opposite, as long as one of us lives, so will the other. i love you, and i will for eternity.” she kisses your forehead, her grip on your cheeks returning as the kiss turned firm. she pulled away, giggling at the prominent lipstick stain on your forehead. she wiped your tears herself before pressing light kisses to your eyelids, “now, let us go explore the city until we have more duties to tend to.” her hands leave your head to grip your hands, eyes glittering with underlying magic. she look you over, “come on sweet thing, we’re getting you dressed and going out.”

and, your sister did just that. she spent the next damn near hour dressing you with flickers of her fingers and giggles and hums. euphrosyne was so fun to be around, you’d already forgotten your earlier dilemma. there were no more worries about whether you were real or not, you were…content. maybe. you’d take this night out as something to remind you why you’ve enjoyed the centuries here as a goddess. to remember why you were you.

“it is rare that anyone dares to throw a party like this.” you gesture to the various men and women in less clothing than normal, the most obscene sounds filling the air from areas in the room no one could particularly see. euphrosyne laughs close to your ear, holding your hand in hers just a little tighter so neither of you get lost in the crowded villa. there were people everywhere indulging themselves in wine among other things. drunk sailors found themselves wherever they could perch, singing loud sea ballads with drunken grins on their faces. you heart felt warm. full. you were part of a culture and nothing could make you happier.

“um, i’m gonna get us some wine stay close to the fountain. i’ll be back, (name), don’t wander off.” she put emphasis on the don’t, knowing how much you enjoyed wandering off and getting indulged in various conversations with random people you knew nothing about. you were social and loveable, what could she possibly do about it? nothing, really, and that’s why you wandered off anyway.

this time, your adventure led you to a balcony. there was no one on it (surprisingly), so you took the liberty of being the first to welcome yourself to the open space. the wind was harsh against your body, leaving your dress moving to the side as your hair blew in the slightest. the moon was imminent tonight, and you could feel the energy of the moon goddess smiling upon you. feeling energies would never get old to you, everyone had their own energy that felt different to you. euphorsyne’s energy was soft…warm, almost. that’s probably why you felt such a need to be with her so often.

“i hope i am not disturbing you, goddess.” a gruff voice calls from behind you, soft in tone but rough in sound. you barely turn around, peeking over your shoulder at the man that’d discovered your little hide out. you picked up a white and gold chiton, and what seemed to be red hair. your lips formed into a smile as you fully turned around, “it is no proble- oh.” your eyes widened as you faced the strong man, veins shot. the man laughs softly at your reaction, “destruction? my lord, what are you doing in greece?”

even with your shock, you’d manage to keep honorifics up. it amused him, just a little. destruction steps forward, clasping his hands around yours, “i have heard your conflicts, i didn’t want to come whilst euphrosyne was present. i’d be causing conflict, she is not of my function, she is of delight.” he brings your hands to his lips, sighing softly as he tries to put his words together. destiny sent him to calm you down, and who was he to conflict with destiny? he isn’t, he believes, and even delight had said he should go. you tilt your head at the endless, surprised by the gentleness in his gestures.

destruction lets your hands go, gesturing for the both of you to lean on the balcony, “(name), your purpose is permanent, it is forever. you’ve nothing to worry about, things such as from which you are from and permanence should never concern you. you are misery, dear goddess. your function extends against every religion and much more, destiny would never make anyone less than what–or who–they are. he believes in you, as do i.”

you had felt yourself get over it earlier, but you didn’t think it would be so reassuring to hear it from an endless. it was quiet for a moment between the two of you, you were probably trying to collect yourself and your thoughts whilst destruction allowed you to do so. you pursed your lips as you watched the stars, feeling them twinkle and shine back at you, “i understand that, my lord, but i don’t believe these thoughts will stop for quite some time. i am three hundred years old, and i still have yet to stop thinking of such things. but,” you sigh, hiding your smile with your hair as you looked down to the people below, “thank you, destruction.”

destruction finds himself smiling as well, feeling the smile radiate from you, “don’t thank me for what has always been true, dear goddess.” his hand rests over yours on the railing, a reassuring warmth radiating from his hand to yours. your chest felt light, worries leaving as quick as they’d come. was this how it felt to be free? worries were plentiful, as were the feeling of relief when you let those same worries go. you wonder, how would the rest of your many (many) years go living, if this was how a measly 300 went? would you succumb to pressure?

“are you also here to enjoy the party? or have you only come to calm a childish goddess who questions herself?” both pairs of eyes are soft as they meet and destruction’s hoarse laugh fills the space between the two of you. he shakes his head, “you aren’t childish, but i was not given limits. so, i suppose i’ll stay a bit longer to amuse you.” you laugh softly as you squeeze his hand, “aw, if you wished to stay longer you hadn’t need to pin it on me. unless you’ve only stayed for me, dear destruction.”

the endless laughs. hard, and your face feels hot as you’ve gotten ahead of yourself. he looks up at the sky, calming his chuckles before finally turning to you, “i have stayed to know more of you, dear goddess.”

tbh companies should just hire fans to do lore and shit bc i like our ideas so much better than actual canon. i feel like companies just add elements and scenes bc they look cool without much thought and fans are trained to treat every detail like its important. i bet half the lore is accidental bc they didn't realize the details added to ~spice it up~ would make people want to theorize

okay nOW im thinking about solon bc i think from an experimental/scientific standpoint, the organization would want to see how different species handle the superpowered gene. would it be too much of a reach to say they used a pregnant werewolf woman as a test subject? in the comic and webnovel, everyone is surprised that solon is mixed because "the two races are enemies"— which implies that at least one of those conditions (vampirism or lycanthropy) can be bred/inherited genetically. if most vampires are low-grade vamps with little function, i dont know if they could even Have children. that could explain solon as a whole- he isn't a half-breed made from the impossible union of a vamp/wolf couple, he was a werewolf cub who got force-fed vampire blood, and since those two traits shouldn't exist together, his body kind of shut down his ability. and NOW im thinking of a solon who HAD a power all his life paired with his lycanthropy, having that ripped away from him when he was turned into a vampire. imagine the bitterness and isolation from his brothers, the process of realizing his power that he took for granted is gone, and now he's a creature he instinctively hates.

i realize none of this is canon-compliant bc the brothers claim to have never seen solon's ability/don't know about his werewolf side (which is STUPID, BY THE WAY. YOU SPEND DECADES TOGETHER AS IMMORTAL TEENS AND GREW UP IN THE SAME ORPHANAGE THERES NO WAY YOU DONT KNOW), but i dont care this is mY hyper fixation and iM PICKING THE HEADCANONS

as for why sooha is still alive w her powers while being human, i think i can allow some "chosen one" plot armor or attribute it to the fact that she hardly ever used hers as a child due to her mom's fears, which allowed her body to grow and mature until she was strong enough to handle her powers, instead of being experimented on and forced to use it as a very young child whose body would crumble under the stress. the organization just didn't think of waiting long enough for these kids to grow strong enough to not DIE.

SERIOUSLY THOUGH or like i told one of my friends a little while ago they should have had whoever wrote the album intros and outros write the webnovel because that wad some actually good/decent/compelling writing (way better than whoever the fuck is writing the webnovel now anyway). but yeah it really feels like a lot of the time companies just put cool-looking shots into mvs for the sake of aesthetics, not expecting them to be read into that much, but we are conditioned to read into everything as closely as possible so. that doesnt exactly work out for them lmao

about solon: that makes a ton of sense actually-- my ORIGINAL idea about him was that he was a boy that got turned into a vampire like the others, but then an accident happened and he got bit by a werewolf OR the organization gave him werewolf genes too just to see what would happen, but after everything we've talked about that makes way more sense. plus, vampires are literally dead, while werewolves are still living creatures—it would make sense that being a werewolf is something genetic, while vampirism isnt (the way i see it, vampires reproduce by biting people or giving them vampire blood to create new vampires—sexual reproduction just isnt a thing that happens with them). that also adds a WHOLE lot of angsty layers onto solon because... he was literally forced into being something that was the opposite of everything he'd been born as (i have a lot of feelings about werewolves being the pinnacle of life to oppose vampires being the pinnacle of death). fucking OUCH, dude.

and yeah no im totally ditching the idea of the brothers not being aware of solon's werewolf-ness or powers for the sake of this story because,, its dumb lmao. theyre his BROTHERS dude theres no way they wouldnt know. and on top of that—forewarning im gonna inject some more angst into this because i can—werewolves are pack animals, arent they? so now im getting this mental image of itty bitty baby solon, living in this small closely-knit little community made up of all the other genetically-enhanced kids and their moms, growing so attached to all of them; not just his brothers, but sooha and the other boys' mothers, too. that's his pack. his family. wolf packs raise cubs communally (or at least i think they do), so im picturing this little community behaving in much the same way; the eight mothers are closer than close, bonded through their shared experience at the orphanage. they take care of their babies together, live together, everything—then all of a sudden that gets ripped out from under them.

the orphanage has come to take back their babies. maybe the boys' seven moms end up being killed, so they really ARE left as orphans, and sooha's mom is the only one left. at the orphanage, the brothers' memories are wiped, so they dont remember anything about their families or the lives they had before—but solon has this sense of inexplicable loneliness, greater than any of the others'. for some reason he feels like he's lost something monumental and he can't even remember what. all he knows is these six other boys, who he doesn't remember but somehow feels like he's known his whole life—and they don't remember him either but they know how painful it is to be a wolf without a pack, so they comfort him. they become his pack; his family. and then, years later when they meet sooha—again, not that any of them know it—he hates her at first, or thinks he does; but deep down in his heart is an ache that says, i know you.

(OOF i didnt mean for that to get so in depth hsjdhdjdb-- i guess i had a lot of unexplored thoughts about werewolves, huh?)

oh and a couple less-angsty (sort of?) werewolf solon thoughts . in the scenario where the brothers all know solon is a werewolf and love him unconditionally regardless of it, i feel like their rivalry with the sunshine city wolves is less "ew disgusting abhorent werewolves trying to take us down >:(" and more "stop accusing us of murder, trespassing on our property, and attacking us unprovoked you fucks we are literally just chilling" lmao (especially because here the vampires are trying to lay low to stay under the orphanage's radar, and then these fuckass werewolves come in like MMMM I SMELL VAMPIRE. that's gotta cause some problems on the conspicuousness front)

i dont mind a little "chosen one" plot armor for sooha as long as its along the vein of "her mom had some weird super-resiliency gene that got passed down to her and made her body actually able to support the superstrength without collapsing" and not "she was a powerful princess in her past life and all of the male characters are in love with her". but tbh it would also make a lot of sense if her mom's insistence that she never use her powers ever gave her body the time it needed to grow and strengthen so that it could support them.

rei - okay starting off with what I mentioned in the tags but I think he may have old addiction issues from before 3rd year and maybe before from being in a very stressful situation (kind of his whole life rlly being a head of like 2 cults but the war def amplified his stress), the Mental Illness(tm), and often being in bar scenes to perform idk what kind but! he’s probably over them now and he doesn’t like his friends talking about drinking or inviting him out bc bad feelings

- after the effects of the war he pulls away from all of his friends that’s like. canon but during !! i like to think he gets closer with people again slowly (mainly bc of kaoru helping him open up but that’s a rant for another time), and he sometimes uses his friends as pillows </3 it’s his way of showing he trusts them

- he still hangs out in graveyards bc he’s a weirdo /affectionate he’ll go there and pay respects and care for graves that seem to be abandoned and then read quietly if no one’s around so that the dead doesn’t feel lonely

- not cis at all but he doesn’t care for gender he just likes being cute sometimes and edgy other times (an old vampire like him can’t be bothered with modern gender norms /j)

- he’s such a nerd he can tell you about the entire chronological history of any country or generally any school subject but if his phone dies he’s crying to kaoru that he doesn’t know how to turn it back on…… he knows so many things but also!!!! nothing

- he likes mothering not just humans but (non land) animals so even if he doesn’t enjoy his family he enjoys working at the aquarium for the animals and he sometimes babysits shinobus frogs but with humans even he likes mothering and taking care of his juniors as much as he can, when people joke he’s like chiakis wife he doesn’t mind it at all

- he’s very touch starved and loves hugs from his friends randomly or cuddling (his dorm is all bestys and they platonically cuddle just bc they all need a little extra love </3)

- he wants to be close with madara again but he doesn’t know how to (and he’s a little scared of being hurt/mama leaving again) so he tends to just push mama away but sometimes, mama comes to him injured and knows kanata will take care of them. they never talk about those moments but kanata appreciates the trust mama puts in him

- he likes sugar a lot he never got it growing up and now he just has stashes of sugary treats

- chiakis parents love him he makes their son so happy (in a ship or non-ship way either works) and even if at first it was. hard to get used to the “hey my besty is a ex cult leader who doesn’t know how to be human” they love him and want to smother him in parental affection

- i think it’s implied in some stories ? but if not i like the idea that he’s from america (or some other english country) he probably wasn’t actually found in a river like he says just. hiding the fact that he was from an orphanage but i think he started trying to become an idol not just because of “genius from birth” like some others but more. because he wanted to prove he was worth something and wouldnt be tossed to the side

- he likes wearing his friends clothes (he steals all of eichis sweaters mostly) because they make him feel loved and wanted for more than just his skills as a performer

- i wrote a fic about this once based on some vague references in stories but he? just doesn’t eat and im fairly certain it’s not an eating disorder i think he views life as his stage as a performer and eating during the “performance” isn’t allowed but the exceptions tend to be a) his day off! a boy needs to rest and he’ll happily eat with fine on eichi day no problem and b) if someone offers him food, he can’t say no, because it’s the script for this play (life. the play is life dude u have issues)

- his wiki lists that he likes piercings but he. doesn’t have any i think he’s afraid of needles so he likes to give piercings to other ppl instead because he would probably faint if you even implied the idea of him getting a piercing

- bi-weekly outings to cafes (shu joins via video call if he’s not in japan)

- it’s. a little rough after the war can’t sugar coat things rei hardly lets anyone close to him and they all collectively stopped trusting wataru (im eternally left trying to figure out how the heck he went from being enemies with them to friends again in like. a month) but they’re getting better!

- emotional support system! they all love and care for each other deeply (platonically, imo) and it’s hard with them all being So Very Mentally Ill(tm) but they try their best to be there to support each other

- eichi is definitely a sensitive topic. wataru loves him and dislikes negative talk of eichi in his presence, rei and kanata are neutral (as of !! more so for rei), natsume and shu despise him…. makes it tricky to get along sometimes!

- they play card games together, bc most of them don’t know how to use a phone properly im not sure if this is quite what u wanted but i hope u enjoy nonetheless !! also. i very much hope that the read more works... i, like the oddballs, am horrible with technology!

A Long List of Trash Fire Lord Zuko Headcanons

...that i couldn't get out of my head:

(warning: SUPER LONG POST i havent figured out how to trim posts yet)

he's the one who unchains azula despite iroh's protests. she doesn't even try to fight him, just cries into his shoulder and keeps mumbling about how father's going to be so disappointed in her. he takes her to her rooms and has her drink a sleeping draught, then stations the best guards he has left outside her chambers.

his first council meeting takes place literally a day after sozin's comet. he hobbles into the council chamber shirtless with his entire torso covered in bandages and every council member just looks at him like '...what'

he does NOT sleep for like,,a week after sozin's comet and then another two weeks after his coronation. katara, aang and suki try to persuade him to sleep and he doesn't listen. eventually sokka, toph and mai team up to literally drag his ass to bed and tell him he's not allowed to get up until he sleeps (does mai pin him to the bed with her knives? yes. is it kinky or sexual in any way? definitely not.)

he drinks So. Much. Tea. at this point it's practically tasteless to him but he drinks it anyway because he just needs something to do and tea is something familiar. he keeps iroh on his toes because he's constantly asking for new tea blends, uncle, i think i actually tasted the last one,

he flat-out refuses to grow his hair for at least a year after ozai's defeat. the second it starts getting close to his chin he shears it off himself, with his knife, and his stylist has a heart attack every single time

when he's tired he'll occasionally jump up when one of his guards moves. it stops after a bit, but for the first month and a half or so he's really twitchy. when sokka asks, the only explanation he can come up with is that he's not used to having people stand behind him silently and not want to kill him, much less want to protect him (sokka immediately takes him out for a shopping trip and makes a point of walking behind him the entire time, but only on zuko's right side, where he can clearly see it if sokka moves towards him)

when the healer declares azula mentally unstable and in need of an institution, he shuts himself in his office for the rest of the night. no one's allowed in, not even iroh. he finally emerges in the morning, eyes red from crying and sleep deprivation, and tells the librarian that he'd like a list of the best mental institutions in the country, please, the best in the world if you can get them

he loves theatre (is this even a headcanon?). unfortunately it practically died out in the fire nation along with the rest of the creative arts, leaving nothing but small troupes like the ember island players. one of zuko's personal goals (meaning things he wants to accomplish that aren't as important as restoring his country) is to bring back theatre; he finally manages to do it after about eight months or so of being fire lord, along with other arts like dancing, music and sculpture

he establishes a national day of mourning, on the first day of autumn every year, to commemorate the genocide of the air nomads. from 100AG onwards, every calendar printed in the fire nation has it marked. at first it was called the day of repentance, but aang persuaded him to have it changed (by arguing that he didn't want guilt to be a literal staple of fire nation culture)

he introduces literally So Many educational reforms, plus a mandatory class that teaches students about the cultures of the other nations (air nomads included) and how some of their traditions overlap

he turns down the offer of having a statue put up of him in the capital. toph ignores him and does it anyway.

he visits azula regularly, makes sure she's (relatively) comfortable and well-fed, and sometimes just sits down outside her door and tells her about everything that's going on right now ('some of the far colonies have developed their own standardised writing, azula, you wouldn't believe it, and i've asked the fire sages to come visit more often—but you never liked them, did you? oh, well; i'll make sure none of them go into your chambers by mistake')

(he doesn't know it, but when he does this azula sits by the door and listens. she wonders what kind of writing the colonists have developed, and whether or not the fire sages have taken on some new recruits.)

he hates being above anyone else. never sits in the throne if he can help it, nor does he sit on the dais in the council room. when he talks to people shorter than him, he finds himself stooping a little bit to talk to them on their level (the exception to this rule is sokka, who he mocks for being shorter all the way up until sokka grows taller than him, the bastard)

the first time he visits the earth kingdom, the earth king's ministers call a toast. he ends up being the only one who has to sit out, because he's too young to drink by earth kingdom law

once his servants figure out he won't kill them for talking to him, they start becoming a lot more bold, telling him off when he doesn't take care of himself. at one point, they force him to let them take care of him so much that he literally just bolts into the gardens and hides there until the staff rope in mai and ty lee

when he needs to escape, he does one of two things: (a) he dresses up as the blue spirit and does some parkour until he calms down, or (b) he goes to work at the jasmine dragon. (b) happens less often bc the jasmine dragon's in ba sing se, but there's been a few memorable incidents when an earth kingdom diplomat walks in and yells, 'LEE?!' when they see the fire lord

the first court artist who draws him also happens to be the one who drew azulon and ozai. he draws zuko without his scar. zuko takes one look at it and tells him, very calmly, that he'd like him to leave, please.

zuko burns the portrait. he doesn't fire the court artist, but he never calls on him again unless he has to. a second court artist is called, and can't help but be a bit confused when the fire lord tells him to be sure to include the scar

he forgets the crown. a lot. sometimes he walks into council meetings in his sleepwear with his hair tied up in a messy ponytail and a bunch of scrolls tucked under his arm. none of his councilmen have the guts (or the heart) to tell him that this is not, in fact, formal council wear

he goes to feed the turtleducks when he's stressed. he thinks he's being subtle. he's not. the entire palace knows, and they consciously give him space when they see him in the turtleduck garden

most of his staff are older than him, so they look at him and see this teeny tiny fire lord who is So Small and who Must Be Protected. the day after zuko's coronation, the head chef holds a meeting where they commence Operation Do-Not-Let-That-Boy-Turn-Out-Like-His-Father (subsection He's-The-Only-Good-Thing-We-Have)

one night he wakes up to find suki sitting in his room, decked out in full kyoshi warrior garb and makeup, and just about screams blue murder. suki tells him there are suspicions of an assassin in the palace, and would you please stop yelling it's very distracting, we won't be able to hear anyone coming over that racket

zuko gets very, very paranoid of random spirits after that. yeah, suki looks like a possibly malevolent spirit when she's wearing her makeup, what about it? (when he tells sokka he's highkey terrified of spirit shenanigans, sokka just looks at him and says, 'man, the stories i could tell...', and THAT'S when zuko remembers sokka spent like six months more than he did travelling with the avatar)

on his first visit to the southern water tribe, he removes his boots and leg guards, rolls up his pants and kneels barefoot in the snow. even though chief hakoda immediately starts trying to pull him up, he's stubborn as hell and stays kneeling for the entirety of his very long, very sincere apology-on-behalf-of-the-fire-nation speech. he nearly loses his toes to frostbite after that, and both sokka and katara never stop giving him shit for it

the first time he grows a 'beard' is completely accidental. he's stressed over some trade miscommunications with chief hakoda, hasn't slept in a few days...and then when sokka arrives as water tribe ambassador to help smooth things over, he takes one look at zuko and says 'man, facial hair does not suit you'

zuko: facial what now

he checks a mirror to find that he's got stubble covering his chin, dark enough that it almost looks intentional, and holy gods how the fuck did he not notice this before

'UNCLE WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME' 'i assumed you were doing it on purpose' 'WHEN HAVE I EVER DONE ANYTHING ON PURPOSE'

he shaves it all off immediately, of course, which prompts a lot of teasing and rib-poking from sokka until zuko finally snaps that he's scared it'll make him look like his father. sokka stops after that.

(the day after sokka leaves, zuko finds that a mysterious someone has scribbled all over ozai's royal portrait, giving him a frankly ridiculous beard and moustache that literally CANNOT be grown in real life. oddly enough, he can't bring himself to care about the defamation of royal property. he's too busy laughing.)

his paths cross with toph and sokka more than any of the others, because sokka is ambassador and toph is technically still a beifong. most of the time, at formal functions, he ends up sequestered in the corner with toph and a hoard of snacks, and they talk and swear much more than they usually do (zuko's ministers once heard him when he was drunk with toph, and the servants swear the older ministers' ears started bleeding)

he restores fire nation cultural festivals, and in doing so subjects himself to learning a lot of complicated dances

during one memorable week, he wrote so many letters and drafted so much legislation that he ran out of paper. he had to go visit the nearest school and ask for some

he keeps up with his firebending and sword training even though it's hard to fit into his schedule. his ministers refrain from reminding him that he has guards to protect him now; it's still hard for zuko to trust his safety with anyone but himself (team avatar is the exception).

he started sleepwalking about two months into his reign. no one knew why. one time, he nearly sleepwalked right off the edge of a balcony, and one of his guards had to grab him by the back of his robes.

the sleepwalking stopped after around a month and never happened again. at this point it's practically palace legend.

after freeing the war prisoners, he went around collecting every single earthbender-proof wooden cell he could find in the capital and surrounding areas. when he'd gotten most of them, he gathered them into a huge pile in the city square and set fire to them with his own hands.

unfortunately he couldn't do that with the waterbender metal cells but he did get toph to come in and bend them all into pretty shapes (well, toph thought they were pretty shapes. everyone else thinks they're meaningless squiggles)

he learned how to write with both hands at the same time out of sheer necessity (he refused scribes until it became clear that he'd be putting some people out of a job; that was when he started letting scribes write very, very minor things, but all important documents/drafts/letters are still written by him)

he once put the wet end of an ink brush in his mouth instead of the wooden end by mistake. didn't even realise until he bit down to keep it in place and ink went oozing everywhere

when his guards rushed in to find him coughing and spluttering black liquid all over his desk they thought he'd been poisoned but no he's just stupid

on his 17th birthday, his first one after being crowned, he got tackled by team avatar in the middle of the ballroom and ended up at the bottom of a cuddlepile for like ten minutes

this cuddlepile happened at an event that was very much public and very much formal. it was a scandal for weeks

just. fire lord zuko, guys. so much potential

Assorted Chica HCs 2

(Running under the assumption of Organic Chica, unless otherwise specified)

- She’s able to do that thing that birds are known for where she can keep her head level/still while the rest of her body is still moving. Does it all the time, be it while she’s walking around or if she’s exercising

- Will also nibble you affectionately like birds often do, too 

- Everyone thinks she’s the same sort of innocent/goody-two-shoes type that Freddy is (which. he’s not. at least not entirely), but really, she’s just better at hiding her mischievous nature than Monty and Roxy are 

- In fact, she’s usually the one encouraging those two to get into trouble, though it’s more her cheering them on or providing them some information that she knows they’ll use for chaos later on as opposed to her getting directly involved herself

- Animatronic!Chica is actually capable of eating, at least kind of. The way the security reports about her behavior are worded makes it seem like her eating wasn’t a problem until she was getting caught rummaging through the trash, which makes me feel like she was meant to be able to eat otherwise. Though whatever she does eat either gets converted into energy or just like. gets dumped into a container or something in her chest cavity for the technicians to take out at the end of the day

- One of if not the strongest out of all the glamrock crew. I mean come on - her whole gig is exercising and shit, you can’t tell me she wouldn’t be capable of bench-pressing Monty for fun 

- Her feathers get all poofed up when she’s cold - they also get ruffled up when she’s mad/scared, too 

- Tries to avoid overly caffeinated stuff because it makes her jittery/irritable. Does make her kinda sad tho bc there are a lot of tasty drink flavors out there that she can’t have more than a sip of 

- Does enjoy coffee tho. and tea!!! loves tea

- Practices her instrument the most out of the group - also likes practicing with the others 

- Her and Monty in particular enjoy practicing together bc it also gives Chica an excuse to check on Monty to see how he’s doing + Chica’s energy tends to calm Monty down pretty well since she’s really quiet/chill after hours

- They’re besties idk 

- She’s all boundless energy and happy fun times during working hours, but after hours she’s a bit more mellowed out n just likes hanging out with her friends/checking to make sure they’re doing alright

- Because she’s sort of assigned herself as the mom friend, she’s got a hard time talking about her own feelings in favor of not wanting other people to worry about her. As a result, this means she’s got a lot of stress built up that usually doesn’t get let out. Most likely where her issues with eating come into play but I won’t get into detail with that since I know it’s a touchy subject 

- She’s a lot better at things than she makes herself out to be - especially when it comes to her bandmates’ attractions/the games they play together. She always says she sucks but is actually pretty good at most things she does 

- Absolute god at cooking, to no one’s surprise - her fridge is full of all sorts of cool and weird ingredients bc she likes trying to make new things every chance she gets. Also will bring in stuff for her bandmates to try as well 

- Very full of gossip. LOVES talking about the drama going on around the workplace, be it conversations overheard from guests or weird shenanigans going on with their human coworkers. Partially because she likes keeping tabs on what’s going on and partially because some of the shit humans do is just fucking weird to her 

- She doesn’t necessarily want to like... keep drama going so much as she’s like “oh okay so that’s a thing that’s happening”, but if it’s something going on with their coworkers that she thinks the others should know about (like someone was being accused of like. harassing other coworkers or some shit), then she’ll let the others know in case they catch them doing it/doing it again 

- otherwise I don’t think she’d really care if an employee stole merch or an arcade pass or something, unless it was a fuck ton of stuff or she was put in a position where she HAD to stop the person (like other employees were around and were definitely watching) 

- Like I said, she’s just as mischievous as Monty and Roxy are, she’s just better at hiding it

Summary: How the Obey Me! Characters react to finding out MC has a particular interest in horror fantasy and feels more comfortable in the Devildom then they do in the human world aka where they aren’t surrounded by apex predators that want to eat their soul

- After explaining the entire situation to the clueless human who stood in the student council room he could see a sort of sparkle in their eye and they smiled widely before shouting “FINALLY! MY TIME HAS COME HAHAH!”

- His first thought is “oh they won’t last a day”.

- He gets a headache when he realizes he put them with Mammon of all people.

- He is glad that MC has an interest in such things seeing as they will be living among the strongest demons for the next year

- I feel like Lucifer loves horror fantasy novels, so if he and MC have read any similar ones they are sure to discuss and recommend to each other 

- Lucifer enjoy when they come in to talk to him about things they saw that they had hear about before arriving at the Devildom because its cute to see the human so excited

- Overall finds it adorable how enthusiastic MC is about the subject

- But is also worried because they feel so comfortable around demons who can and will eat them

- BUT also glad you aren’t afraid of the demons because they can smell fear and it is overwhelming and easy to lose control when they smell it

- When MC wants to see his natural form ( bc I just know hey don’t stop at those half-human half-demon forms Solmare shows us) he worries he may scare them off, but shows them regardless and is relieved when their excited smile doesn’t falter

- When he is first showing MC around the Devildom he considers just thowing the human over his shoulder because they wont stop running towards dangerous stuff to observe it

- Like oh my Diavolo, does this human have a death wish why would they WANT to drink the potions that can and will kill them in a matter of seconds

- If his hair wasn’t already white he’d be getting white hairs from stress, like WHAT KIND OF EXCUSE IS “I’ve never drank a potion but I’ve always heard about them”?! PLEASE GIVE HIM A BREAK

- Mammon isn’t big on horror stuff so he hates when MC brings it up

- If he sees horror fantasy related stuff for sale or being bet in a gamble you can bet your ass he’s bringing it home for MC no matter what

- Sometimes when they walk around the Devildom, MC will point out creatures they’d only heard of in their stories and he loves the way their eyes light up as everything they’d read about for so long came to life

- Tolerates the subject to make MC happy, even if he can’t sleep at night because of it.

- A bit worried about the fact he has to babysit the human who is way too casual around violent predators that want to eat them

- If MC asks to see his natural form he gets flustered for a second, but then gets cocky and goes off about how “oF cOuRsE tHe HuMaN WaNtS tO sEe ThE GREAT MaMmOn iN aLL HiS GloRy”

- When MC walks into the House of Lamentation with Mammon and he introduces himself as Leviathan... their eyes light up

- They question him about all sorts of things they’d heard in old stories and if he could really turn into a giant sea monster

- After a while of knowing MC he finally promises that when they go to the beach next he will show them his natural form 

- He summons Lotan when he’s mad at Mammon and when he turns to Lotan to command him to attack the avatar of greed he sees Lotan is preoccupied with the human who was giving him belly rubs and talking to the giant sea monster in a baby voice

- He like horror fantasy animes so he is 100% willing to discuss them with MC 

- Whenever a new horror fantasy game or show comes out you won’t see MC and Levi for days because they’ll be holed up in his room on a mission to complete the anime or game

- He and MC like to cosplay as horror fantasy characters together as well just for fun

- Whenever he sees them look at a creature that may be normal around the Devildom but is very dangerous to interact with as a human he is immediately noping the heck out of there, dragging them away despite their cries of wanting to see the “little cute fluffy animal :(”

- When they show up and their eyes light up at the explanation that they’d been summoned to hell, he can’t help but laugh because he already knows this human is gonna be a trouble maker and cause a lot of problems for his dad Lucifer :^)

- One of his favorite genres of movies and books by far

- Loves to watch MC grow curious and fascinated by all the things in the Devildom that they never thought would be real

- He takes MC to see creatures at the Devildom zoo that you would NEVER see in the human world 

- He could spend hours talking about the topic with MC and sometimes one of the brothers will walk in on them talking about scary fantasy stuff and just slowly back out bc they get SO INTO IT

- Is glad to help them learn more about creatures that reside in the Devildom

- By that I mean he hovers behind MC menacingly in demon form whenever a demon agrees to let the human examine and study them

- If MC wants to see his completely natural form he gets a bit blushy and a bit nervous as his form is the embodiment of wrath and meant to strike fear within humans

- After he finally transforms and they start to examine him enthusiastically without a shred of fear he thinks to himself “oh that’s right this is MC, my idiot human = who could crawl inside a demons mouth and still be unsettlingly happy”

- Nope nope nope

- He doesn’t like scary stuff unless he’s allowed to cling onto a cute person for comfort

- Really likes the look of excitement in MC’s eyes though as they see creatures they never thought they’d get to see because they get a sort of glimmer that just makes him go so soft for the human

- Glad they feel comfortable around demons because it means they will be more willing to come clubbing with him

- But is still sure to hover around them while they enthusiastically examine and question demons around them

- Makes flirty comments about wanting MC to examine his natural assets (aka his naked demon dick is what he wants to show them)

- In all seriousness he is very proud of his natural form and is very willing to let MC study him

- Still worried that MC is gonna get hurt by one of his brothers or another demon if MC asks to see their natural forms because he knows how easy it is to go feral and lose all reason in such forms

- He finds it cute how interested MC is in everything around the Devildom

- Very concerned about the easy going attitude around his brothers and every single being in the Devildom

- MC sometimes comes very close to eating foods that will make a human sick because they want to understand demons better and want to live just like one

- Sometimes forgets MC is only human because they just fit in so well with all the demons

- Shocked to learn how boring the human world has become as he always remembered it being exciting whenever Mammon would bring him, Belphie and Lilith down 

- He’s a bit shy about his demon form because he knows a lot of humans are afraid of bugs 

- But when MC so delicately yet enthusiastically examines his natural form he almost cries

- So soft for this human but so SO worried

- tries to warn them to be more cautious outside of the House of Lamentation, but knows that they aren’t gonna be because they get carried away with learning demon life

- When MC first came through the attic wall and was able to see him they made eye contact and were both like o.O

- Then MC’s face lit up as they started to talk about how cool magic was that it could hide a whole entire person and floor of a house and he is just confused, but he knows he can easily manipulate them due to their enthusiasm towards this type of stuff

- Was shocked they weren’t even afraid of Lucifer and were actually excited to see his demon form up close if they got caught

- While he is still covered in their blood and stuff after getting out and stuff the future MC comes downstairs and is just like OMG YOU KILLED ME SO EASILY 

- MC gets dangerously close to him again asking questions about his claws and tail and powers etc.

- After that whole ~ordeal~  he grows protective over MC seeing how they trusted him so easily due to their enthusiasm because he knows there are people out there who still want to hurt the human

- He is surprised by the description Mc gives of the human world as he remembers it being so interesting, but he guesses that since it has been very long since he last went but is still sad to hear it’s less interesting’

- Can act like a brat whenever MC puts themselves in danger due to their curiosity

- If they ask to see his natural form he is a bit shy because he worried they might get scared by him seeing as how he killed them in only half demon form so how were they going to handle his whole entire self

- Seeing their eyes light up at his explanation as to where they were made his heart leap with joy

- He knew this year would go smoothly with such an enthusiastic human!

- He was wrong. 

- It feels like every five seconds he will be getting a call from Lucifer about MC almost dying from getting too close to demons and other Devildom native creatures.

- Worried about the poor human but doesn’t want to ruin their fun so he scolds them very lightly and assigns familiars to protect them 24/7

- If MC wants to talk to him about any other creatures, rather than going to find them by themselves, he is glad to educate them on any false stories they’d heard

- When MC asks to see his final form he laughs it off at the time, afraid of hurting or frightening them

- But if MC insists enough he will show them and is rather shocked when they enthusiastically poke and prod at him while asking a bunch of questions.

- He knew MC would be like this as he was one of the main people to  prepare for MC’s arrival

- He’d prepared a bunch of horror fantasy novels for the brothers to put in the human’s room

- Was a fan of reading those books as well, but mostly because he liked to see how the humans interpreted the existence of such creatures

in the aftermath of the Winter Cup, your relationship with Akashi has certainly gotten much better, and dare you say, more intimate and romantic; though you were still healing a bit from the emotional scars from Teiko, they seemed to be going away faster than you realized, especially when everyone gathers for Kuroko’s birthday party

you were with Seirin, helping with the decorations and setting up the plates before Kuroko comes in the evening, but what no one expected was for him to bring in the GoMs

YOU’RE SHOOK AND YOU’RE BASHFUL SEEING AKASHI IN HIS WINTER ATTIRE, you’re getting MAD butterflies, but no one seems to notice because everyone’s attention is on the GoMs and Kuroko

of course Akashi was scanning the room for you first, and you immediately look away from his affectionate stare because you were still not used to the old Akashi, let alone his sweeter side for only you

Izuki notices how quiet you got and nudged your ribs with his elbow before telling a stupid pun… the thing is, you were one of the few people who genuinely found his jokes funny LOL

Akashi widens his eyes, staring at you laughing so unabashedly, and he feels really, really bad that he never got that level of a reaction from you whenever you were with him even despite knowing you for longer

now as the party goes on, Akashi is seeing your dynamics with Seirin for the first time and he’s just really grateful that you found an amazing support group during your low times; he’s not particularly someone to get jealous, but he’s getting a BAD case of FOMO because he’s thinking of all the “what-if’s” and all the times he could’ve made you happy and stress-free

“Akashi-kun?”

“Ah… yes?” Akashi snaps out of his daze to see a mild smirk coming from Kuroko on his right side, and Kuroko was about to ask a question about who he was looking at before a shout of “Watch out!” and a ceramic plate came FLYING across the table to hit the Rakuzan captain square on his face

CUE SCREAMS OF PANIC AS MOMOI PUNCHES AOMINE ON THE HEAD AND RIKO JUMPS TO STRANGLE KAGAMI, AND YOU LITERALLY ZOOMED TO HIS SIDE TO CHECK ON ANY INJURIES

see, he could’ve easily dodged it, and he supposed that it’s his fault for not paying attention and dodging on time

thankfully, the plate didn’t break because Kuroko caught the plate before it reached the floor and placed it back on the table

Akashi still has a bruise or two on his face though… and ngl, everyone gulped when they saw him checking out the injuries with a handheld mirror, ready to get their ankles broken

you were so worried over his safety, he finds it really endearing… but he wants to elicit an expression other than looks of worry or tears or anger (flashback to when you cussed him out)

“Wait, but (y/n)...” Koganei said. “Since when were you so close to Akashi that you didn’t hesitate to touch his face?”

a few moments of silence for everyone to register his words

“EHHHH?????!!!!”

everyone is throwing QUESTION after QUESTION at the two of you, and Akashi just has a neutral face with his mouth parted while you were so embarrassed LMAO

Kise being a real best friend, tells them:

“Alright, alright, everyone! Let’s not forget about the birthday boy! Kurokocchi should be the center of our attention today!”

“Kise, that’s…”

“Anywho! Let’s light up the cake and find those party poppers…”

after the party though, when you all return to school, Seirin was READY to jump on you for interrogation, and you do reluctantly tell them that you and Akashi are a tentative couple

Riko: “SERIOUSLY? I mean… that’s kinda cute though…”

Hyuuga: “I mean… yeah, as long as you’re happy, it’s none of my business.”

Teppei: “I hope he treats you well, (y/n)-san.” and of course he gives you his signature head pats

Furihata, Tsuchida, Kawahara: “??????????????????? But why?”

Koganei: “Huh, guess that explains a lot.”

Kagami: “???????????? pt. 2 LMAO” and also “What do you even see in him?” in genuine curiosity

Kuroko simply pretends that this is the first time he’s heard of you dating Akashi, and he gives you his heartfelt congratulations, and as long as Kuroko approves of it, you feel like you’re on the right track (he’s such a good judge of character!)

you and Akashi actually live VERY far apart, considering that your schools are equally just as far in distance, but that being said, for our rich boy Akashi, distance isn’t much of a problem when he can easily find ways to come visit any time

he can also pay for your transportation to visit Rakuzan if you ever felt like visiting him too (although, you insist to pay for your own things, but he’s not having it because he says it’s a treat for him to see you too)

whenever Akashi stops by the Seirin campus to visit, he’s just kind of awkward standing there like the prince that he is, waiting for the perfect opportunity to walk in, but every time, he’d ALWAYS notice how you’re so happy being with everyone here, especially with Izuki, and his guilt just comes back full force again

he wonders if this was right of him to date you when there’s so much people who can easily do a better job in getting you to smile and be completely yourself, especially since he’s been the source of your anguish for all these months (maybe even a year or two if he was counting the duration of your entire crush on him that you assumed to be unrequited)

“Seijurō!” your voice rang out, beckoning him to walk towards you and the group

all of the Seirin teammates are so wary of him, and are all hyper aware of his movements LOL, and Kuroko is just like “hi, you’re back” very casually

Kagami uses this as a chance to challenge a one-on-one on Akashi

Kagami gets destroyed in a few minutes flat

the whole time you’re just watching Akashi with heart eyes, unbeknownst to him while he was focused on Kagami

after the interrogation and Akashi passing the “first stage” of acceptance, you and him find time to have a cute date at a local shopping district to walk around and sightsee

Akashi finds it fun, he really did, but there’s a part of him that thinks you’d have more fun with people who know you better… a.k.a. Izuki, or legit any other Seirin member

he’s visibly distracted by his own thoughts, and you wave a hand to his face, asking if this was too boring for him

“No, no, of course I’m enjoying this with you,” he muses, putting a gentle kiss to your temple. “Shall we get moving?”

“Something’s bothering you isn’t it.”

“No,” he chuckles, giving a gentle smile, but you only frown at him… once again he sees that you weren’t smiling at him

“I’m serious Sei, I want to get to know the real you,” you softly chastise, pinching his cheek. “So I also want you to speak your mind around me.”

“Oh ho… I see that your boldness is still very present here,” he says in referring to your touch.

“Oh my god, can you drop it already? That’s so embarrassing—I cussed you out one time… hey don’t change the subject!”

“Hmm…” he hums for a bit before he comes clean. “I’m afraid that I might not be the right person to be worthy by your side after hurting you for so long.”

“... What makes you think that?” He hesitates, for the first time, not being so sure of himself and his emotions; he immediately thinks of Izuki and your good chemistry with him but dismisses the thought

“... I just do not think I’m capable enough to make you happy.”

“But you are. I’m very giddy to be with you right now.”

“Even happier than when you are with… your teammates?”

“Huh?”

“I apologize,” he hurriedly says. “They are your friends. I was out of line to question them.”

“No, no, it’s okay. Talk it out to me.” He’s uncharacteristically quiet as you both continue to walk and browse through the shops, and you carefully watch Akashi while he’s examining a few souvenirs on the display, patient for him to continue talking

“Seirin’s point guard.”

“Izuki-kun? What about him?”

“While I’m aware that you only spend your time with him as a good friend… I want to spend just as much of a koala-ty time with you whenever we have the chance.”

he... says this with the straightest face, and you’re utterly confused before you saw some animal plushies on the store window, and the the koala plush, and then the cogs started turning in your head

a few moments of silence pass and Akashi thinks he did something wrong because he wanted to make you smile (HELP poor captain), before you break into hysterics

between your fits of broken laughs and wheezes, you managed to ask if he was jealous of Izuki, to which he wholeheartedly kept denying until you wouldn’t stop being persistent

you reassure him over and over that he doesn’t need to act like Izuki to make you happy, but it was a pleasant surprise to see Akashi crack a “joke” nonetheless

he’s a bit new to the concept of dating and is still quite unsure of how to navigate this PLEASE GIVE HIM TIME

the date that day was a success (some of the Seirin teammates TOTALLY weren’t spying on you mid-date or anything…)

while Seirin is okay with you dating, visiting Rakuzan ALONE with the scary-ass captain and his “CROONIES” (hint: the rest of the team LMAOO) IS AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT STORY

RIKO AND HYUUGA are just like:

“What’s wrong with him coming here to visit you? Why do you gotta do the effort to visit him?”

“Uh… because I want to…”

“Yes, but who would you call to help over if something wrong happens? You’d be too far!”

“With what, his scissors?” Kagami gives a deadpan look, and everyone turns to look at him in utter confusion LMAOOO like what does this redhead mean by SCISSORS???

Kuroko immediately jabs Kagami’s sides to silence him and smoothly changes the conversation before anyone asks any more questions about the “scissors” and potentially make them more reluctant to let you go

oh Kuroko, being the mediator and negotiator as always, trying to set some safety protocols for you to follow before everyone finally agrees to let you go see the infamous team alone

you know, Teppei is honestly just like, “Just go! Don’t worry about our (y/n) too much!”

Furihata is so concerned for your safety for valid reasons, but you reassure him that you won’t “die from the trip,” and no, this wouldn’t “be the last time” they’d see you before you leave

so when you stopped by Rakuzan’s gym after school after looking at the online maps, Hayama lets out a screech of terror before he starts pointing at you and calling you the “crazy ass chick” who tried to have a first-row seat ticket to death LOL

Hayama’s commotion brought everyone else’s attention to you, and Akashi was very surprised to see you all the way here

but he’s just standing at the back to watch how his teammates are reacting to you

Reo is the guy who would welcome you very warmly and would introduce you to the other team members who aren’t the starters, and he would actually ask if you were okay from last time

Nebuya is very laid back and throws a few muscle jokes much to Reo’s dismay, and he makes a comment about not you possibly not eating enough because at the time, he saw you almost tripping up your feet after you cussed out Akashi… he offers you his extra bowls if you ever feel hungry VERY SWEET GUY

Mayuzumi thinks you have balls, like who the fuck would come out alive after cussing out his captain but then COME BACK to said school of the captain… like why would you willingly walk back into the lion’s den??? so he thinks you’re dumb, but he has a shred of respect for you

Akashi is so amused at the spectacle and finally walks over to you after you noticed him

and he gives you an embrace and a chaste forehead kiss, and the entire gym goes silent

“Sei! I wanted to drop by as a surprise! Did you expect me?”

“Hm, I may have expected you to come sooner or later, but definitely not this quickly. Were transportation fees too much of a hassle?”

“Nope! I got everything covered! Do you want me to give you any chiropractic massages if you and your teammates need it?”

TLDR; your first trip to Rakuzan may be awkward because the two of you stick out like a sore thumb, but eventually after multiple trips, the team slowly begins to consider you as one of their own

as per Akashi’s “suggestion” (hint: not a suggestion, but a strong recommendation), you were to be retreated with respect and kindness

why? Because Akashi never wants a repeat of the situation at Teiko ever again :(

as long as he is captain, and as long as he has the power and authority, he will do everything he can to make you happy and comfortable

So! @thxngam and @claudiasjeancregg enabled me to talk about that scene in Dead Irish Writers and oh boy did I run with it! 

So... the scene is super interesting for several reasons... let’s dive in...

It’s a scene that’s just women, and, by West Wing standards, several women, and you realize you’ve never really seen all the main women together without the men before that, I think. I mean, you also really haven’t seen how Donna and Abbey interact, which is why this scene is so good

The four of them actually have two scenes with this sort of thing off the top of my head-- this, and then during Zoey’s kidnapping arc with Amy and CJ trying to stop Abbey from going into the press room (though Donna doesn’t talk in that one)

I probably will bring this up again but on top of this not being a dynamic the audience has seen before, I don’t think it’s a dynamic that they’ve had before in this combination... like... 

Any group of two of them I will accept having spent some time together, though I doubt Donna and Abbey are close (partially due to the power dynamics I’ll get into later) and Donna and Amy don’t know each other well

Any group of the three of them? Not so much

Amy, CJ, and Abbey maybe, because they do say or imply that Amy knows both of them and is friends (?) with both of them before we ever see her, but... I don’t see her as being particularly close with the campaign or administration, so... (but I’m SO glad we get it here and during the kidnapping arc)

Amy, CJ, and Donna is a dynamic I adore and that I think this scene kinda opens the door for it in a lot of ways but again, since I don’t think Amy and Donna are close at all at this point and Amy’s not that close the the administration at this point, I don’t see it

CJ, Donna, and Abbey I will absolutely accept actually but not in any sort of like meaningful or non professional context. The way Donna reacts to being invited in in this scene? This is new for her

Amy, Donna, and Abbey? Nope. Love it as a concept, but nope

So the four of them? Yeah, no

Which is relevant in like. The way women get to interact on screen and like. The way women are isolated in male dominated fields

(Amy, working for the WLC, is certainly in a less male dominated subset of the male dominated field of politics, as is Donna since a bunch of the assistants are women, and I get that Abbey has a very specific and gendered position in the show, but she and CJ are both absolutely in male driven fields)

And it’s relevant because Abbey’s shifting her anger into this like, feminist framing where she doesn’t not have a point (I’ll get there) but it’s also not really the whole story at all, which is why I think it was very smart of them to have it be this group to call her on it, because from any of the guys it would’ve been... easily yikes?

The other absolutely crazy thing here is the power dynamics which I know people have talked about before and CJ even calls attention to but you’ve got like

Abbey is sort of CJ’s boss, and her friend, but the nature of their positions in the administration are weird and they’re both honestly undermined a fair amount but a lot of the admin doesn’t take First Lady/Abbey seriously, so! It’s interesting!

Not in a direct sort of way but CJ clearly has more power than Donna, and they’re also friends

Do the math on Abbey and Donna, plus again we don’t really see them interact before this

Amy sort of exists outside of this, because she’s the only one who doesn’t work in the White House, but that also like. Is a dynamic in it of itself. She also definitely has a more visible and overtly powerful position than Donna and is sort dating Donna’s boss, so?

Also Abbey used to babysit for Amy which just makes this. A lot!

So I’m gonna try to sort of break the scene up into parts and do it like that. If I wanted to make this even longer, I would start before this scene because there’s a lot of relevant context/lead up, but I’ll just mention it

Donna’s just found out she’s not a citizen which is a lot

Amy’s kind of pissed at Josh who’s kind of pissed at her

Abbey’s also kind of pissed at Josh probably, especially if she caught any of what he was saying to Amy

Abbey didn’t want a whole thing and is obviously stressed about her license

CJ’s the one who caught that the guy was recusing himself and had to tell Abbey

“Claudia Jean?” “Yes, ma’am?” “Let’s go get drunk.” “Okay” should be a master class in acting

Also relevant is Abbey choosing CJ and Amy to get drunk with for this. They’re career women in politics who are her friends and who should understand this sort of.

So they get to the residence... “Awasiwi Odinak, far from the things of man...”

Abbey instantly cuts to complaining about Jed bc she’s angry at him and in her defense only some of it is misplaced!

But like... she says “what a jackass” and CJ immediately says “I’m gonna open the wine” in a very “can we not do this” way, and Amy just... is there. Hanging out. Trying to open drawers

As a note on that there is no way Amy’s being like. Genuine there. I love how awkward she is but she’s not about to take notes while getting drunk with them. She’s being awkward and funny and avoidant and I love her (like as a random note Amy is... very rarely still)

When she comes to sit with them and sits on the arm of the couch, it’s a really interesting detail that I see as her sitting as far away from them as she can without it seeming so blatant

And Abbey keeps talking, and neither of them really respond 

CJ with the corkscrew is of course iconic and funny and I think it’s part of the reason the scene works and it makes sense because CJ’s uncomfortable in this scene. Her rambling about the corkscrew prevents her, momentarily, from being in this uncomfortable position that she’s put into so much more later where she’s thrown into the issues of Abbey and Jed’s marriage and she really doesn’t want to be because she has a ton of respect and care for both of them

What I mean by “the reason the scene works” is that it needs to keep being drawn back to funny before it can snap. It’s a very specific kind of bubbling tension, and I really like it

Abbey saying “I’m board certified in thoracic surgery” brings you back to the fact that maybe she won’t be for very long, but it’s said as a joke and moved on from quickly, so you can’t dwell on it

I describe Abbey in this scene as “erratically vulnerable” which I don’t know if that’s quite right, but I think there’s maybe a glimpse of her realizing what she’s saying here, and the specific implications in that moment, and then changing subjects immediately

And of course she asks Amy about Josh...

What I find really interesting about this is Amy’s response of “he’s... you know... he’s adjusting.”

Amy doesn’t pull punches with Josh usually, but she does here (she also seems to earlier when she tells him he’s right, but then she gets Abbey to bug him) and I think it’s because we’re seeing her talk about Josh, not to Josh

Abbey says “well let him adjust faster. Jackass.” which is again, funny, but so so indicative of how frustrated she is and how she’s taking it out because literally earlier in the episode she says to Amy and Josh something like “I still haven’t gotten credit for this (I love them and their responses of “we’ll see” and “jury’s still out” to that)

Enter Donna!

Side note on timing, Donna walking in as Abbey insults Josh vs Abbey walking up as Josh insults Abbey

Donna coming in shifts this scene a lot

For one thing, it sets up this interesting play (that feels like me being really contrived and probably is) on audience proxy, that if I get into will only complicate things so I guess... if you’re curious, ask

(Donna plays audience proxy a lot in The West Wing as they explain political concepts and whatnot, and it’s not a thing you see so much in these really character driven scenes because it becomes unnecessary and sort of clunky

But the thing is that in this scene at this point, Amy feels very audience proxy-y... I will concede that in any given scene it’s easy for me to default, in analysis, to Amy and her perspective, but she feels very much like an observer of CJ’s jokes and Abbey’s anger thus far in the scene-- it definitely shifts back to Donna after the fade out)

I also want to shout out Donna’s body language here! The way she steps in cautiously and plays with her hands as she talks is really good at showing her discomfort, and I think it’s neat to draw a parallel here between her and Amy a minute or two before. Like, seriously though, watch her hands in this scene. It’s so good

But Donna walking in this room shifts things!!

Pulls attention to the... D plot? I don’t know, it’s the B plot of the scene, but there’s a lot going on in this episode, which is funny in the context of watching it if not for Donna, and away from Abbey’s heavy plot here, like a pressure valve in that tension I was talking about. Donna looks nervous here, but everyone else seems to relax

It also makes this more of a... White House thing. Like, because Abbey and Donna specifically probably have not been friends much, it further complicates the lines between personal and professional relationships here

But let’s actually talk about the dialogue a little bit, because I think it’s really funny that she’s there looking for Amy for Josh, when Josh knows she left to get drunk with CJ and Abbey, and there’s not a second in that room where Amy is going to leave. It somehow feels shoehorned/plot device-y but also in character at the same time?

The line is “Josh was looking for Amy” to which Abbey says “She’s right here” and Amy just waves weirdly with half her hand since she’s holding her glass. Yes I know I keep fixating a little on Amy’s physicality, but it’s SO good

And then Abbey says “Where have you been all night?”

One of my FAVORITE exchanges this episode is “It’s a little tough to explain, ma’am.” “Tougher to explain than secretly prescribing Betaseron?”

The way Abbey jokes about it!! It’s very specific because it’s not an “I’m moving past it so I can joke about it” it’s that she’s specifically bitter and it comes out... not hostile, but something

That’s sort of what I mean by erratic vulnerability?

Donna explaining the citizenship issue with CJ’s convenient questions is a nice break, like I said, and Amy’s “you seem pretty calm about it” gives Donna the room to freak out about it a little

And Donna freaking out about it a little gives Abbey room to be the “rational” one? Not exactly?

It’s also just a nice contrast in how they show their anxieties and it works really well for them as characters

Donna goes to leave, and Abbey invites her to stay

Which is also interesting? Since like I said, I don’t think they’re friends

But it’s also super in character because there’s something very grandiose about Abbey and it’s there in this scene. Like she... wants an audience? Even as she’s sort of trying to get away from this room where she’s forced to perform? I don’t know

Donna’s genuine excitement here is so cute

She sits even further from them than Amy had, on a chair instead of the couches

Another great exchange? “I probably shouldn’t drink, though” “I wouldn’t worry about it!”

There’s also something a little awkward and desperate about Amy’s “Canadian, huh?” like she’s trying to fill the silence and keep it from driving straight back to Abbey’s anger and identity crisis, and I just like how they play off each other here

CJ "opens" the bottle, Abbey says they'll decant it, Amy says "Now it's a party" and does the most iconic slide from the arm of the couch onto the cushions with Abbey

And then it cuts back in, and they're all boozier, especially, evidently, CJ!

But there’s something to be said, if we’re tracing body language, for Donna now being on the couch and Amy leaning into Abbey so much

With the later context that they’ve known each other since Amy was a kid, I accept it, but it’s absolutely crazy in the context of Abbey as the First Lady and Amy joining them because “you think I don’t wanna write a book some day?”

I mean, I love it either way, but it makes more sense with the retroactive context

I love love love CJ laughing and rambling about the cork and the wine and then you get another really important shift. Because Abbey seems annoyed in general but more amused than anything by CJ’s tangents before the fade out, and she’s at this point way less endeared.

Which totally makes sense, of course, ‘cause if you’re stressed and frustrated, anything is going to annoy you, including and honestly especially your friend being rambly about something completely irrelevant

I also love Donna looking around at Abbey and Amy while CJ is talking trying to make like conspiratorially amused eye contact, it’s a really subtle, human detail

Anyways, Abbey interrupts CJ to make her stop (This is another body language thing where I love how leaned back she is, how she rubs at her forehead as CJ keeps going on)

And it’s here I’m gonna start being REALLY pedantic probably

“Mrs. Bartlet, I wanted to ask you a question but I’m not sure how” “What?” 

First of all, this feels so... soft? This is actually why I’ll accept the babysitter thing

Amy playing with Abbey’s dress is so! good! Look, Amy’s so fidgety and I adore it!!

Also, I love this because Amy clearly doesn’t really want to ask, but she’s also not good at keeping quiet when something is bothering her

“Well, if the most they can give you is a year's suspension, is it...?” “That big a deal?”

Amy stops herself! Because she doesn’t want to say it! Or doesn’t know how to 

Amy never actually criticizes her in this scene, which is neat, because Amy’s practically introduced to us through criticizing Abbey. One of her first lines in the show is “[Abbey] isn’t doing enough for women” and she has lines like “I’ll keep poking him with a stick. That’s how I show my love” but in Privateers, Josh also tells her “it’s okay to tell her you disagree with her” while Amy’s refusing to go against her. It’s not inconsistent-- I just think Amy has a think about criticizing Abbey to her face, kind of, and here, while Abbey’s this upset, of course she’s hesitant at best

“Yes.” “Yes. I'm a doctor. It's not like changing your major. You of all people should...”

Abbey really says this to Amy “who has had seven jobs in three years” Gardner, Amy “and I’d [stake my job and career on a political issue] again” Gardner... “you of all people should...” Amy’s a career driven feminist lobbyist, but she’s not someone who can tie her identity to a job which is the real issue Abbey’s having, she just wants to frame it like this

I love the way Amy looks down during this, too

(“You of all people should...” makes a lot more sense, actually, after Amy loses her job because of her and Josh’s political fights over marriage incentives in welfare reauthorization)

((Also, how many times did Donna change her major? It’s not relevant, really, it just makes this an even funnier room for Abbey to say this in))

“I mean, women talk about their husbands overshadowing their careers. Mine got eaten”

She’s valid for being angry about this, but also she’s conflating things. She’s not losing her license just because of Jed

Like, it’s fair for her to hate how much of herself and her career and her life she’s had to give up because her husband is the president. I think it’s important, even with Donna’s also valid criticism here in a minute, that Abbey’s not being irrationally upset. It’s a choice she played a part in making, but it was never going to be a good choice for her, and it isn’t really fair to her, and it isn’t really any one person’s fault

And yes, I DO love how Abbey talks with her hands here. It’s that kind of grandiose thing about her

“Your husband got eaten” “My career” “Yeah, well, I’m on dangling modifier patrol” “What is your problem?”

I’m going to lose it a little bit here, because it’s really funny at face value

Like, this is one of my favorite tww comedic moments. The timing is so good. But trying to analyze this scene? Watching this scene multiple times? This is them being snippy with each other. CJ is upset here, with Abbey

(One of the things I really like about Sorkin-style rapid fire dialogue is that there’s a rewatchability where you pick up on different things each time)

CJ’s really subtle about it, which is... CJ is very subtle about her emotions a lot and there’s something similar you can look at throughout the show as a whole and also this episode in particular with the different ways that she, Abbey, and Jed learn to put on facades and deal with being very, very public people. Abbey in particular in this episode has a lot of rapid demeanor shifts, but you get the same thing from CJ going to brief in some of the heavier episodes, or, like, Jed at Leo’s funeral

I mean, really, the “What is your problem” feels way more jarring than anything CJ has said because outwardly she’s just been joking, but there’s... a tension or something? A flatness to her voice? A lack of amusement? It’s a really stark contrast to how she’s been overly amused about the cork or whatever. It’s good, and I like that Abbey picks up on it and doesn’t let it keep going unspoken

I do wanna take a second here because CJ doesn’t fully answer, I don’t think, so I wanna answer for her

A part of it is just her loyalty to Jed, too, and specifically to the president I think, and the awkwardness of being thrown into Abbey being so disparaging about that 

I also think that, as a character who takes on a lot of personal responsibility and, to an extent, guilt (less than some of the others, or at least less overtly), and internalizes a lot, it sort of bothers her that Abbey’s refusing to take responsibility here, like, at all, and that Abbey is externalizing all of her anger

The other thing is that we do unpack all of the team feeling betrayed and upset and angry with Jed and even sort of Leo during the whole MS plot, but we don’t really deal with any of them being angry with Abbey

And none of them would be, particularly, because she’s not their boss, their career, their friend, but she is CJ’s friend

She tells CJ “I wanted to be there when you were told” but she didn’t say “I wanted to tell you” (which. I could write a lot more about this but this is already too long)

And I think CJ hasn’t had any opportunity to address or unpack that

Oh, and here we see CJ refilling her own AND Donna’s glasses, meaning Donna is drinking. I would love to see the full transition between the scenes tbh

“Are you First Lady right now?” I love CJ’s sigh leading up to that, the way she doesn’t want to get into it

“What are you talking about?” “Sometimes you like to talk, and I think that’s great, but sometimes you're Abbey and sometimes you’re my boss, and I respect both very much, but--”

HOW is CJ this eloquent moments after the corkscrew monologue? 

No, but this is really it, and speaking of taking things under the surface and calling them out (wow, I did it, the whole analysis, right there...), CJ is just shining a massive light on the weird power dynamics here, and that everyone in this room other than Abbey has a really, really valid reason to feel uneasy in this conversation because of those power dynamic

“I’m Abbey.” “Yes, I agree with her”

Cutting it off right here because I love how quick they are with this. Like, it’s Sorkin, so duh, but Abbey’s hand up cutting CJ off and as soon as she’s spoken, CJ jumping in to say what she wants to

This is interesting because Amy hasn’t exactly made a point for CJ to agree with, also. Like, it’s supposed to be “is it really a big deal?” but Amy did not say that. I just think it’s neat

Also, because I’m obsessed with CJ and Amy’s implied friendship, I love this moment

“Look, they take this job away from me, I got nothing. I don't have a cat. I could get one, but I don't have one. Frankly, I'm not wild about cats. I don't hate them. I'm just not... I could learn to like them, I guess, if I...”

CJ losing the thread here again gives the scene it’s rhythm... it’s ebb and flow of tension and humor... it’s funny, to watch this, but you also kind of want to get back to the point, too

“CJ?” (with the pointed arm motion, too) “You've got a husband, children, a home and a life. And we're talking about one year of your not having a medical license.”

I think CJ is mostly being like “It’s not all you are” and sort of “stop complaining” but it’s also a step away from a point that Amy also ends up approaching, which is... First Lady is a weird position, and they do something specific with it in the west wing

Essentially, neither Abbey nor Helen wants it and it sort of becomes about sacrifice and loyalty and public and political and private life balance, but the First Lady is a public figure, with responsibilities and powers and careers, and it’s fair to on a professional level be upset with Abbey for being so dismissive about those

It’s also fair for Abbey to resent being thrust into this role she doesn’t want

“Jed got censured, and that came with no tangible penalty, and it was a banner headline, and he's having a slow nervous breakdown.”

The way I interpret this is both that she’s bitter at having to bear the tangible penalty of the two of them, and she’s trying to justify being upset at it, at the perceived injustice

ALSO, Abbey’s voice here makes me want to cry, because she sounds like she’s about to cry, and I realize half of this analysis is me saying “Yeah they were right to call Abbey out” but like. You do feel for Abbey here. You understand why she made the choices she did and why she’s upset at having made them, at being put in a position to make them

CJ looking away and almost rolling her eyes here is also really good, she’s so frustrated at Abbey just willfully missing the point 

“That’s different” “Why?” “‘Cause it is, and you know it.”

The thing that makes it different is actually, I think, basically the point Donna’s about to make. Like CJ’s close to making that same point, because the thing that makes it different is that what Abbey did is directly related to her doing her job poorly, essentially, and what Jed did isn’t, so of course she’s gonna get a more tangible penalty

“Okay, I’m First Lady again” “Okay.”

Abbey saying that is obviously a shield but also feels so vulnerable, like an admission that she can’t take it

CJ’s tone here is so good, too. Like she is backing off but the way she says it like “Okay well if you don’t wanna hear it that’s fine I guess”

Again, god, watch their hands

“You are First Lady, Abbey.” “Yes.” “And it’s not like it’s been a detour from healthcare” “No” “What, you’ve expanded Medicare to...” etc etc

Cutting in after that and keeping talking about it is... pretty bold honestly

The thing here is that Amy’s both arguing CJ’s point, basically, of like, you still have things, a career, and reassuring Abbey and being like it’s not giving you or your priorities or your identity up

It’s very smart, and it reminds me that Amy is, in very specific circumstances, really good at this sort of communication

I also love that she can list all this off. Like, of course she can, but I love it

When CJ says “There’s plenty of stuff left” I really wonder if she’s supposed to mean to list or to do but I like the sort of ambiguity there

Here’s another bit where the tension subsides, and the thing is, this is a weird sort of fake out ‘cause it almost feels like that’s going to be it, but no one has said the thing, the tension hasn’t fully erupted yet

“That’s not the point” “What’s the point?”

The point is that Abbey never wanted this, it’s not her, and god, I want to hug her

“I’m a doctor” could be a really poignant beat because that’s also the thing Abbey hasn’t explicitly said yet, or at least not emphasized, that this is about feeling like her identity is being taken away

But do they let us sit with this line? No. If they gave us a beat here, Donna’s line would feel weird on several levels

“Oh, Mrs. Bartlet, for crying out loud, you were also a doctor when your husband said, ‘Give me the drugs, and don't tell anybody,’ and you said, ‘Okay.’”

Donna has not spoken, I should point out, since before the fade to black. It makes the line really slap you in the face. Everything about this line, from timing (immediately after line before, long pause after it) to who is saying it is designed for impact, surprise

She’s also saying it very nonchalantly, half laughing. There’s a lot about her delivery that is exasperated, genuinely frustrated criticism, but it’s also just... almost playful teasing for a second in there

More on why it’s Donna saying it, though

I think you just don’t expect Donna to be... it’s not quite rude. Antagonistic at all? Beyond like lightly teasing the others? Certainly not to Abbey especially with the lead in of her being surprised and honored by being invited to drink with them

Amy criticizing Abbey doesn’t have the same impact. She’s not a main character, you’re probably gonna take Abbey’s side, really, and Amy criticizing her, like I said, isn’t new

You can’t take the personal elements out of CJ saying it. You can’t. They don’t give us a ton of context on CJ and Abbey’s friendship, but it’s very clearly deep, and CJ has also already explicitly backed off as far as this conversation

Remember what I said about audience proxy? Donna’s kinda their go to every-man, and this also is a window into how the public would feel about it. For the like, hundredth time, Donna and Abbey are not close, and she’s as close as you can get in this show, maybe, to an objective messenger for this while it’s still from a trusted, likeable main character. You have to balance feeling for Abbey with Donna’s valid point here

Also, Donna’s really good at reading people and casually calling them out/breaking things down.

(Aka being a stand in for explaining things (if it’s political, explain it to Donna, if it’s someone’s emotional shit they’re too repressed to say but you want the audience to get anyway, explain it through Donna. This isn’t criticism, I exploit the second often in my fic)

(Donna doesn’t actually look at Abbey like at all as she’s saying this. She’s mostly vaguely looking down or looking at Amy. I don’t know what to do with that, exactly)

Abbey’s stare here!! It’s... shellshocked. Because I don’t know that she really has processed like, no, this was your mistake too, you did have agency in this, etc, bc she’s been using the anger as a defense all episode

Amy’s face is comical here, which I think is mostly not expecting that from Donna (which is the point) or from anyone to Abbey. Based on their relationship, there’s probably some base defensiveness on Abbey’s behalf, but I also think, and this is more headcanon, that like this is a position Amy’s been in before

“I used to get you in some jams” “Yes you did” plus her whole vibe, I have to assume Amy’s stepped out of line with Abbey before

CJ doesn’t look surprised, because hey! She knows both Donna and Abbey well, so she can maybe see it coming more, and like I said, I think she was really about to make the same point before Abbey stopped her, kind of. She looks like she’s waiting for it to catch up with Donna

And catch up it does! She looks over, panicked, to CJ, like she’s just remembered the whole layout of power dynamics CJ articulated

“Oh my god. You switched back to First Lady” “That’s alright”

I love that the first thing Donna says isn’t an apology, isn’t saying she was wrong, she shouldn’t have said that, she’s out of line, it’s just panic

And the fact that Abbey quickly just reassures her after! It’s so good

“I’m so sorry, Mrs. Bartlet” “It’s okay”

The camera staying on Abbey here is really smart, the way she shakes her head and you can watch her distracted reassurance, her processing 

Even without the “O Canada” etc stunt, I would insist, from Abbey’s reaction here, that she really isn’t upset with Donna, she’s just upset, but she does know, really, that she needed to hear that, that she’ll be grateful for it

CJ and Amy both make faces that are kind of like... quietly agreeing with Donna. Like a “Well, yeah, and now it’s been said, and that’s... a relief?” It’s good for the release of tension they finally give us

“He took the censure standing up, Abbey. I was very proud to have voted for him that day.” “Me, too.”

This is not the place for me to unpack my feelings on Amy and Jed

Her calling her Abbey here is interesting, personal, considering she’s been calling her “Mrs. Bartlet” all night and they’ve explicitly gone over the “you switched back to first lady” but I think it really works for the line

With this, it’s different, too, because it did come with no tangible penalty for Jed, but it’s still... something about integrity, maybe.

And Abbey saying “Me, too” is so gently hopeful, in a way, and it’s the first positive thing she’s said about Jed this whole time, really, and it gives you a nice feeling, like it’s going to be okay. Abbey and Jed, and Abbey just as a person

Donna looks so sort of regretful here you just want to reassure her that Abbey really, really isn’t upset with her, that she appreciates it, but it’s okay because you get the Canadian flags at the end

“Let’s get back to the party” is sort of one of the switches I’m talking about with Abbey, and you need it to move the episode along, and it wraps it all up
