I Am Once Again sad and horny over waifu anime king arthur so here's my tl;dr on Saber fate Stay Night and why this armored blonde chick is fucking everywhere since the early 2000s.

Arturia Pendragon, aka genderbent King Arthur, is a woman who spent her entire life striving to be her image of the "ideal king" for Britain. That is to say- someone who has no emotion, no desires of their own, who can stay objective at all times regardless of personal gains or biased opinions. To that aim she essentially kept everything that defined her as a person bottled up. Emotions? That goes under the rug. Likes and dislikes? That is irrelevent. Gender? Gotta keep this one hidden. Artoria herself is someone who dislikes killing and doesn't even like fighting that much, but she had to put all of that aside for the sake of her people. Someone had to take one for the team and she accepted to be that person.

And it worked! She united Britain! She lived a miserable life, existing as a tool rather than a person, isolated from even her knights and her wife, but she saved Britain. For a time, the country was at peace.

Of course you can only be an ideal for so long. Camelot crumbled eventually. The knights of the round almost all died, and Artoria was killed at Camlann by her son.

But once on her literal deathbed, what does Artoria do? Does she finally let go of her role as a king to rest? Does she accept Camelot's demise and move on? No. This fucking genius right there figured that if Camelot failed, it can't be simply because the world is a neutral force where good and bad things happen equally. It must be because she, personally, must have been unfit to be king. So she makes a magic contract to throw herself into basically a battle royale timeloop for a chance to get her wish fulfilled- a chance to get a more appropriate person to pull the sword of selection and become the king Britain needed. Which, yes, would erase her from history and essentially be suicide. Because she is the king of Britain and it is her duty to sacrifice everything for her country- be it her feelings, her humanity, her life, or her existence.
