CAPTIVATING THE KING
GENRES: Historical, Romance
SUMMARY: The King of Joseon loves you whether you are dressed as a woman, a man, or a baduk swindler.
THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Baduk board lugging, poisons, treachery, international deceit, adorable Princes, scheming Dowagers, secret rendezvous, fashion eye patches, gisaeng friendships, terrible beards, and frustrated guardsmen.
HOT TAKE: I think there might be as many plot holes, gaps, and hand-waves as there are episodes of this drama. That being said, this show is gorgeous, full of desperate weeping, and some decently-progressive lust.
If you like slow palace drama or private royal romances, you'll enjoy this. If you're seeking out some REAL edge-of-your-seat mystery and intrigue, you might want to pass on this longing romance.

NO! we literally don't care!!! bring out their sexy adoptive mother!

I'm watching "King the Land" and my only thought is "wow, Korea must be trying to encourage folks into the hospitality industry."
God, I know far too much about the Korean government and the usage of Korean media...

Can you recommend like a fun, silly, summery drama? I'm looking for similar vibes as Cheer Up or Age of Youth (female friendships are a plus). It's hard to find something without melodrama.
First off, I LOVE your user icon! (- ‿◦ )
And I definitely want to help you find something silly and easy to watch, especially as we enter the depths of winter! Some of these are a little less slice of life but still fun. Also I know you already watched/mentioned a couple of these but I'm adding them to the list for everyone else who might be game!
Light Hearted Fun K-dramas (little or no melo)
Soundtrack #1 (slice of life/romance) Best friends for almost 20 years, the two leads start having feelings for one another while working on a project. This drama only has a few episodes which is a shame because it's really cute! As a Park Hyung Sik Stan (sorry but Happiness broke me), he's great in this one and he hasn't lost all of his military weight yet which I LOVE :D
Tumblr media
Fanletter Please! (slice of life/ romance) A sick child writes fan letters to her favorite star, an actress who for kdrama reasons is afraid of fan letters. This was a super sweet, short drama - I really liked it so much!
Into The Ring (workplace/romcom): The perfect slice-of-life rom com! Goo Se Ra has trouble holding down a job due to her passionate personality so after she loses her latest job working for the ML, she decides to run for a small government office position because it pays a salary. Literally she does it for the money which is just *chef’s kiss.* The show is about her dealing with local politics and it’s SO FUNNY and smart and the OTP is the best!
King The Land (rom/com): A cold chaebol hotel owner meets his match (literally and figuratively) who is a top notch employee. There's a lot of push pull and the ML (MY BIAS!) Lee Junho's character falls hard and fast. It does have slow moments but if you literally want to watch a happy couple be happy (plus the skinship is chef's kiss and there is so much of it) you'll enjoy this one.
Tumblr media
Melo Is My Nature (slice of life): This drama is by far my favorite slice-of-life drama of 2019. Found family, strong and complex characters, I laughed, I cried. Plus a gay character that’s an actual character, with the gay as a casual side note (classy k-drama!!) It was just a perfect show for me. There’s romance, but all of the stories are super interesting.
Top Management (slice of life) I know this show is mainly on Youtube Premium BUT I just got an email from Youtube basically saying “hey we know you never want to pay to watch our shows so we’re just going to let you ok?” so that’s something… Adorable mini drama about a girl who can see the future and becomes the rookie manager for a kpop band. Fun and easy.
Business Proposal (rom/com) Seriously this drama is almost the exact same plot as The Secret Life of My Secretary. It's really fun and cute (just like the latter) and if you like one, you'll like the other ;-)
True To Love / Bo Rah Deborah (rom/com) Bo Rah is a relationship expert publishing her book. She works with a man who is her total opposite making it a cute enemies to lovers. Yoo in Ah is literally so adorable I love watching her! (If I'm honest I can't remember a TON about this drama but I do remember it being an easy watch).
Tumblr media
Her Private Life (romcom): Park Min Young really knows how to pick dramas. I loved this one about a museum curator who is secretly a fangirl obsessed with an idol. It’s fun and fluffy but does have a very mild childhood trauma thing with his mother but I mean, 99% of dramas like this do? If you like this one, Touch Your Heart and Why Secretary Kim are by the same person and have similar vibes.
Touch Your Heart (rom/com) A sweet, silly and very mild rom com about a serious boss and his hallyu star secretary. This show was an obvious response to the chemistry that Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na had in Goblin so it was nice to see them together again. Yoo In Na is such a fun person to watch!
Fight for My Way (slice of life/romcom): I love this drama! Always a fave for me, this drama is funny and heartwarming! The leading lady is a strong female which I LOVE, and Park Seo Joon plays her really cute down to earth best friend. It’s a childhood friends to lovers trope with a group of regular people (no rich heirs in this show!) and has a happy ending and a lot of cute flirting, cuddling and kissing. Argh I love these two!
Age of Youth 1 (slice of life): Age of Youth/ Hello My Twenties is one of the best k-dramas that centers around strong female friendships. A group of wildly different girls find themselves rooming together in an apartment. Lots of romance too, but the girl’s lives and friendships are the primary focus.
Shopping King Louie (romcom): Ridiculously fun and lighthearted romp following a spoiled and useless chaebol with amnesia who is being taken care of by a country bumpkin in the city. Very low stakes, super adorable couple, and as many tropes as you can fit in your bag, this one is one of my favorites to recommend.
Eulachacha Waikiki / Laughter In Waikiki (slice of life comedy, romance) I hope you’re ready for a crazy amount of unlikely situations and nutty hijinks because this show is probably one the most silly ones I’ve ever watched. It follows a group of friends who own a hostel so it’s a slice of life drama. At certain points I was like “this is TOO silly” but I’m glad I stuck with it cause it was so hilarious. Plus, the baby is a star!
Wok of Love (rom/com) Despite the fact that the show was shortened by two episodes because of sports, this drama is a funny and quirky show worth watching. Many people dropped it because it was SO crazy for the first couple of episodes (it has a talking horse people!), but it does settle into a really sweet and fun story about a chef, a gangster and a rich girl and her family. If you love food, this show is for YOU!
And finally, if you don't mind a bit of melo, I highly recommend Run On!
Enjoy <3

[FULL TRANS] 240201 YoonA – Vogue Hong Kong February 2024 Issue Interview
Tumblr media
February cover story | YoonA : “Love can make this world a lot warmer” Editor note: Anyone who loves K-pop will know Lim YoonA’s name. YoonA has been standing at the forefront of the Hallyu wave since she debuted in 2007 with Girls’ Generation (SNSD), becoming the most dazzling presence be it on stage or on screen, and more so becoming the global idol of many. In our February issue, she exudes limitless charms in Miu Miu’s latest wear and Qeelin’s jewellery. After all, she is the one and only Lim YoonA.  YoonA has recently once again become a hot topic as ‘King The Land’, the Korean drama that she starred in, topped the Netflix’s non-English TV chart. In the drama, she plays as the bright and cheerful hotelier Cheon Sarang, and this name means ‘love’ in Korean. This time, she poses as the cover girl for our February issue with the theme ‘love’ as well. In YoonA’s heart, what is the meaning of ‘love’? She said: “I think love is something so necessary and important in life, no matter what form it takes as love can make this world a lot warmer.” Q1: You recently starred as the female lead of ‘King The Land’ that was ranked number 1 globally on Netflix. Were there any unforgettable moments when you were filming this project? Also, can you share with us some of the behind story? What I remembered vividly the most was the super cold weather, it is especially so when we were filming for outdoor scenes, we were like fighting a battle in the cold. (Laughs) The behind story that I thought of right now was that when we were doing interview before the drama aired, I said that I hope that ‘King The Land’ can be ranked first globally on Netflix, and this wish indeed came true.
Q2: What is the one distinguishing feature you like about your character Cheon Sarang? Do you two have any similarities? What I like most is her positive and professional attitude. I think our smiles are similar.
Q3: The drama ‘Big Mouth’ was a noir genre, which was a huge contrast to the ‘King The Land’ which is a romantic comedy drama. As an actress, how do you prepare yourself when acting different characters? I would consider stylings that fit the characters, and also portraying emotions that suit the character’s personality. I will also do my research on how to best convey the character’s emotions and story to the viewers.
Q4: You first stepped into the limelight when you debut as a member of SNSD in 2007. It has been 18 years since then, looking back, what insights and growth have you gained? I do not think that I have make major transformation, my personality is still the same as before, but I have matured a lot in this 18 years. The insights and wisdom I have gained through experiences over the years have make me grown to who I am today.
Q5: As a celebrity, how do you constantly grow and improve yourself? I think that I am steadily walking forward, a step at a time. As my filmography continues to expand with each passing year, I have also continued to grow constantly, among them, there were new challenges as well as projects that are well received by the audience. I hope that in the future I would be able to welcome more meaningful challenges that will allow me to grow even more, and to continue to work hard and move forward.
Q6: What is the most memorable moment you spent with SNSD members? There was a period of time when we were really busy, we travelled to numerous places due to our global concert tour, for example going to the hot springs and amusement parks, those left me with really beautiful memories, that I would cherish deep in my heart.
Q7: How would you describe your personal styling? What is the one item that you like the most? During winter, I like to wear comfortable and warm knitwear, and in summer, I especially like wearing one piece dress, because you can complete the whole styling with just a piece of clothing.
Q8: What role does jewellery plays in your everyday styling? How do you match your outfits with jewellery? If the outfits that I’m wearing are fanciful, I would pick simple jewellery to match, and if my outfits are minimalistic, then I would use jewellery to add flavour to it. Just like what people always say, “simplicity is the best” (Laughs)
Q9: If you can say one sentence to the 17 years old Lim YoonA that just debut, what would it be? I will say, “I hope that you can continue to walk every step steadily according to your own thoughts, just as how you have been doing right now.”
Q10: What is the next plan for Lim YoonA? Are there any new things you would like to try, be it in music or acting field? Whenever I am in touch with a new project, I would always feel like I am challenging myself. I do not restrict myself in a certain field, instead I will work hard to explore every different sides of me. My next project is a movie called ‘2 O’Clock Date’, I believe that everyone would see a refreshing side of me, please look forward to it!

BTS’s Jimin Shines as the Unrivaled Dance Prodigy, Garnering Attention as the ‘K-Pop Representative Performer’
Recently, a Hallyu media outlet praised Jimin, a member of BTS, stating that he is known for delivering impressive performances on stage and that his powerful dance skills always give joy to viewers. They also highlighted his ability to create various atmospheres while dancing and released a list of ‘Jimin’s 5 Best Dance Styles,’ as chosen by netizens.
First and foremost, Jimin’s ‘powerful choreography’ was brought to attention, particularly his robust and precise dance skills seen in songs like ‘Fire’ and ‘Idol.’ His performance of ‘Run BTS,’ which garnered attention when unveiled at last year’s Busan concert, and his solo track ‘Set Me Free pt.2’ were also mentioned in this category.
Next, they highlighted Jimin’s ability to convey a ‘lively and slightly lighter atmosphere’ with his dances, which is evident in songs like ‘Dynamite,’ ‘Permission To Dance,’ and ‘Boy with Luv.’ His dances in these songs are characterized by their soft yet vibrant movements.
The third category showcased Jimin’s ‘sophisticated and elegant contemporary dance,’ especially the performance of ‘Black Swan’ and his year-end stage. Jimin’s contemporary dance style, influenced by his enrollment in the dance program at Busan High School, is distinct and exceptional enough to receive praise from dance experts.
The fourth category demonstrated Jimin’s ‘dynamic control’ in his dance moves. Examples included his puppet-like movements in ‘Fake Love,’ where he appears to collapse like a marionette, and his body control showcased in the performance of ‘Mic Drop,’ where he seems to be hit and thrown backward as if shot. His exceptional body control was also evident in his solo track ‘Like Crazy.’
Lastly, they introduced Jimin’s dances that encompass ‘flexibility and core strength,’ highlighting the high-level difficulty of moves like the 360-degree rotation in ‘Serendipity’ and his impressive wave skills displayed in ‘Intro: Boy Meets Evil’ and ‘Set Me Free pt.2.’
Jimin has carved out his unique dance genre through various dance styles, and he is widely praised for elevating K-pop dance to the realm of art. He is defined as the ‘Dance God’ and ‘Dance King’ on the Urban Dictionary, and he is considered one of the leading dancers representing K-pop, with numerous victories in dance-related polls, having been crowned 17 times as the champion.

unprompted HC
My VC for Trickster is Max Changmin.
No one can outdo the sexiness Mirotic had in the early 2000s.
but also man is a vocal KING (Both of TVXQ have the "Kings of k-pop" title.) His solo work and TVXQ work is fantastic.
youtube
youtube
Trickster could definitely have a smooth and more performative/theatrical sound that also hits a bit punchier and lend to rock/edgier vocals. (Plus having the sound of older/golden-era K-pop.) Man needs an amazing range for a soloist who has to make up for a missing band. This ties into: TVXQ actually began as a five-member boy band in 2003, and later became a duo. Despite their commercial success, the group plunged into legal turmoil and internal conflict when three members attempted to split from their Korean agency. Eventually leaving just the duo after a year hiatus, where they topped charts in most Asian markets.
I'll leave some songs here for your listening pleasure:
Piano is the smoother sounds; Devil for the deep soulful vocals, perfect for mournful ballads; and Fever for the rock/edgy vocals that would make NoSpin stand out.
youtube
youtube
youtube
Gushing about Max, he can speak excellent English and nails soft vocals. Can see it around 5:20 here! (and his talk about ramen + cilantro. You can't say it's not something you don't see him doing with YunJin) The whole interview is precious, from sad eyes due to being busy with little memories to being a bad guy/villain!
youtube
but also here you can hear his deeper vocals without music! (around the 2:34 mark) That deep chuckle around 2:50 is everything 🥰
youtube
Oh- plus there's this side note about TVXQ: Selling over 10 million records in the first 10 years of their career, TVXQ has become one of Asia's most successful music acts of their generation. They are often referred to as "Asia's Stars" and the "Kings of K-pop" for their immense success and contributions to the Hallyu. The duo became the first non-Japanese Asian artists to headline a nationwide five-Dome tour in Japan and were the first foreign artists to perform in the Nissan Stadium. Billboard has described the group as "K-pop royalty".
Seems like inspirational wise it'd lend to the "Legendary Trickster" status.

K-Pop Invasion: A Beginner's Guide to the K-Pop Universe in 2023
In the expansive cosmos of music, a vibrant and energetic galaxy known as K-Pop has been gaining momentum at an astonishing pace, captivating hearts, minds, and earbuds across the Western Hemisphere. This meteoric rise of K-Pop—short for Korean Pop—has become a cultural phenomenon, its irresistible pull transcending borders, languages, and genres. Disclaimer: It's a brief overview / Quick catch-up.
I. Tracing the K-Pop Comet
K-Pop's journey began in South Korea, but its trajectory has swiftly moved across the globe, leaving a radiant trail that's hard to ignore. Powered by infectious melodies, impeccably synchronized choreographies, and high-energy performances, K-Pop is more than music—it's a dynamic, immersive experience.
A. The Statistics Speak Volumes
The K-Pop industry is booming, backed by impressive numbers that reflect its far-reaching impact. According to Statista, in 2023, the industry is valued at an impressive $5.3 billion, marking an exponential growth from its $4.7 billion value in 2019. More telling, the K-Pop audience in the U.S. surged by 58% from 2018 to 2022.
B. Expert Opinions on the K-Pop Phenomenon
Musicologists and sociologists alike are fascinated by the rapid ascension of K-Pop. As Dr. Suk-Young Kim, Professor of Critical Studies at the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television, eloquently stated, "K-Pop isn't a genre; it's a complete package of audio-visual elements that provide a sensory feast to its audience."
![kpop-sensory-feast.jpg](K-Pop is a complete package of audio-visual elements that provide a sensory feast to its audience)

A. Key Artists to Know

JYP (Park Jin Young): Not just an influential artist, but also the founder of JYP Entertainment, one of the biggest entertainment companies in South Korea. He has played a significant role in shaping K-Pop as we know it today.
MAMAMOO: Renowned for their powerful vocals and unparalleled stage presence, MAMAMOO stands out as a group that delivers both quality music and empowering messages.
EXO: This group has made significant strides in the K-Pop industry with their captivating concept of being from an extraterrestrial origin and their extraordinary vocals and performances.

BIGBANG: Often hailed as the 'Kings of K-Pop,' BIGBANG has been instrumental in shaping the modern K-Pop sound with their innovative music and edgy style.
Red Velvet: This group has made a name for itself with its unique 'red' and 'velvet' concepts, which denote their upbeat pop tracks and smooth R&B ballads, respectively.
B. Dive Into the Lingo
Every universe has its own language, and K-Pop is no exception. Here are some key terms:
Hallyu: The Korean wave of pop culture.
Fandom: Each K-Pop group has its own dedicated fanbase.
Maknae: The youngest member of a K-Pop group.
C. Understanding the K-Pop Culture
K-Pop extends beyond music into fashion, dance, and fan interactions, creating a unique culture that enriches the K-Pop experience. It's not just about the music; it's about belonging to a global community.
III. The Power of K-Pop: The Future Soundtrack of Our Lives
The phenomenal surge of K-Pop in the Western Hemisphere is not an accident. It's a testament to the power of music to bridge cultural divides and unify people under a shared love for rhythm, artistry, and entertainment. Do you find it weird how big the differences in interactions on social media vs music streams and stuff? Like how Tae has often over 1m more views than others for fancams, or has hundreds of thousands more likes on tweets about him or the 5m extra followers on instagram but his solo songs are all quite low stream wise given he has millions more "fans". I'm assuming its because they're mostly there for the "visuals" or something. But then he wasn't in the hallyu chart thing while JM and JK were.
Views and followers can be bought. That's one reason and stans are known for doing this. In his case, they sure do care a lot about the visual king or whatever bullshit title they always like to shove in everyone's faces. I mean, I saw it first hand in the type of asks they used to send to me. Completely irrelevant anyway. Tae stans have so much on their plate, from wanting to sue in his name, arguing left and right with literally anyone, busy writing wattpad stories on twitter. Do they have time to listen to his music?

"My Behind the Super Show 9 Meet and Greet (August 6, 2022) 🎶✨"
For fangirls, there's nothing quite like the thrill of experiencing a live performance by their favorite singer or band. The energy, the music, and the connection between the artist and the audience can be truly magical.
Who is SUPER JUNIOR for me?
Super Junior was one of my ultimate bias groups since 2012. They are so popular in my country. Even not a fan they know who Super Junior is. There song is so catchy, the concept is unique and visual was unexplainable. Every comeback was gives me goosebumps most especially the vocal.
How I feel about the announcement
Being a fan for almost ten years I always dream to attend their concert. There's a lot of SUPER SHOW happened here in my country, but I never had a chance to became part of Sapphire Blue Ocean. When the PULP announces on their twitter account that on August 6, 2022, hallyu king will come to Philippines I was so excited. During that I only earn not so much for the ticket, but I decided to come.
The Ticket Selling Excitement
Around July 2022 the ticket selling was happened many fans go to camping at ticketing outlet a night before ticketing. Because of being busy I decided to purchase tickets via SM TICKETS. My original plan was to buy GEN AD B that is cost of Php. 3,500.00 so I add some money on my GCASH account. During the ticketing all of GEN AD B tickets was sold out so I decided to get GEN AD A even though I am tight budget.
Pre-Show Excitement
As a dedicated fan that will attend a concert for very first time is very exciting. I planned my outfit carefully such as go to mall and online shop. Also, I purchased a fan kit (fan light and headband light with my bias name). During that time because I am tight budget, I didn't purchase an official fan light or SUJUBONG. I save my money for my transportation allowance from QUEZON PROVICE to QUEZON CITY because I will stay on my aunt house.
One Day Before SS9
During that day August 5, 2022, was a very rainy day that's why I am worried how will I travel at early as 3 am on the next day. While packing my things for my travel I am standby in twitter to see some updates of Super Junior. When I saw some pictures from many sources, I am a little bit nervous for what will happen because it's looks like sad from the airport footage.
DDAY
At exactly 2 pm I woke up because it takes 6 hours from province to NCR. When I opened my twitter account, I was shocked because on my feed the news is EUNHYUK father was dead. All of the fans were worried even the organizers but there is no announcement if the concert is postponed or cancelled. When I arrived at MOA I saw many fans outside all of them was like mixed emotions for what will happen. I forgot the details of announcement but what I remember we entered the Arena for us to meet and greet them. All of the members were sad, but they managed to give us a song. They promised us that they will come back for a two-day concert.
