WEEK 2

Welcome back! This week we made a lot of headway in our film journey. We started off in class beginning to settle down and decide on our storyline, getting more serious about our ideas. We were all on the same page with ditching most of the comedic tones we had been thinking of, and really putting our all into the aesthetic and story of the film as we are all determined to do really well in this task

Originally we had planned to shoot our film at the abandoned Wangi Power Station and spent a lot of our time this week working on ways that we could make that possible, such as contacting the council, chatting with our tutor, attempting to contact the owners of the building/land and talking to the head of the course about it, however after no response from the owners, we moved on to finding a new setting for our film so as to avoid wasting any time. So to do this, we found a time on Thursday that we were all free, met up at Uni and went on a group road trip to scout out some locations. We looked around Stockton and at the old BHP site, however we couldn't find anywhere that wasn't private property and fenced off. Lastly we drove to King Edward Park and looked around for the old Tunnels and Bunkers that still existed... and we struck GOLD! We found the perfect location for our film that still matched the aesthetic we hoped to achieve at Wangi. We took videos and photos of our new location and began considering lighting, shots, and characters for our story.

Lastly, we zoomed to discuss the risks that we may face with shooting in our newly determined location in order to complete our risk assessment together which we submitted. We considered driving to our location, being close to the road, filming close to the cliff, lighting, uneven ground, broken glass, and nearby neighbours. After identifying these obstacles, we put steps in place to minimise and avoid these risks at all times to make sure all of us are safe and every hazard is lessened as much as possible.

Overall, this week has been really productive and I'm looking forward to nailing down a story plot and gathering all the equipment we will need for shooting in the next week to turn our amazing ideas into a reality!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the multi-talented actor, activist, and singer Harry Belafonte. In his 90s be became known more for social activism, but in his lifelong career, he worked up an award-winning and unparalleled resume of hit films and recordings. When I perform in assisted living homes, I often play Belafonte’s evergreen “Banana Boat Song,” to the delight of the audiences. However, I have a stronger connection to one of his “deep cuts”—the song "Love Love Alone.” It tells the tale of King Edward and Ms. Wallis Simpson, better known as The Duke & Duchess of Windsor. While the true circumstances and controversies of their lives have been a source of criticism and debate, the point remains: In 1936 The King abdicated his power to be with the woman he loved. It was love over throne, and Harry gave the story a vivid make-over.

The song first came to my attention via my friend Dan Rielly. The 1957 HB version was quite calypso-fied (when calypso was, for a time, bigger than rock'n'roll). Dan and I took it into a synth-pop zone, leading to a full production for my FIRE album. During the FIRE sessions, the song caught the attention of Davy Jones (Monkees) for the song’s airing of “controversial British history.” Davy cameo’d a vocal on my track and, months later, he pitched the song to the cable television series he was hosting at the time, MEET THE ROYALS. He also played it live a few times. Meanwhile, HB to HB—thank you for shaing your skills and for the deep cuts on your records.

A long day. (493 words)

Sydney stood in the aisle, sighing deeply as she tried to decide between JaffaCakes or some other sweet treat to improve her mood after listening to a lecture on how KingEdward wasn’t as useless of a king as the rest of them are. To her they were all just as bad, apart from maybe Henry VIII – she hated him. Jazz played quietly through the speakers that were scattered around the walls, a welcome change to the store manager’s favourite song – Dune buggy by The Presidents of the United States of America. She moved through the aisles, idly grabbing items and shoving them in her trolly, finding herself in the Halloween fanfare that shops always do months in advance. Fake crows and various skeleton themed decorations were flung all over the shelves, clearly been looked at and disregarded by children as they got more excited for the spooky season.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket, a text, the name of her partner showed up on screen. Robin had asked her when she was getting home; she had no idea really, she didn’t feel like going home in all honesty. Going home just meant that she had to have conversations, something she was less than in the mood for, nevertheless she replied with a simple thirty minutes. Thirty minutes would be more than enough time to rouse some energy from within her before sitting down for dinner. Everything would be just fine. Everything would be great. Everything would have been great if she didn’t turn the corner to find her friend Pluto waiting to talk to her. They hadn’t spoken in a while and Sydney did feel some guilt for it, she was never the best communicator.

She found herself putting on a smile and asking them how their day was, getting a cheerful response. How exhausting. The conversation went on for a while, moving from topic to topic and eventually landing on the mutual lecturer they had last year – Mr Kipling.

“How is he these days?” Pluto would ask, curious.

“I saw him last week,he’sokay.” Syndey would reply, hoping for that to end the conversation so she could go home and melt into a puddle of exhaustion.

However, it didn’t end there, she found herself convinced into giving the enthusiastic person a lift home, both of them getting into her super rougecar, one that Robin thought did not have the best colour but Sydney loved it for its boldness. The drive was mostly uneventful except for the occasional statement from Pluto:

“Watch out for that cyclist.”

“There’s someone waiting to cross, you should let them!”

“Ah, I heard there’s road work ahead on this road, we should take another route.”

Truly, too much for Sydney today. Alas, they made it to Pluto’s home, dropping them off, and soon Sydney found herself at home and curled up under a blanket whilst dinner cooked. She hoped her evening could be peaceful.
