ON UNA'S SERVICE RECORD ;
from ages 18-22, una studies at starfleet academy, and serves rotation time aboard the uss sojourner. though una prioritizes the sciences, she refuses to truly specialize, and her coursework spans advanced engineering, linguistics & communications, navigation, exobiology, astrophysics, geosciences, advanced mathematics, tactical analysis & combat modeling, and more. at any given time, she is taking twice the credits of your average cadet, and somehow still manages to rank at the top of her class. her record is littered with commendations from her professors.
at 22, una is assigned as an ensign to the uss martin luther kingjr, where she works in the sciences division in the departments of astrophysics, planetary geosciences, and xenobiology. at 24, she is promoted to lieutenant ( junior grade ) and assigned full-time to geosciences, where she remains for a matter of months.
quick to boredom when the breadth of her study is limited, una requests a transfer to the operations division, and though it is granted, she is reassigned to the uss antioch as helmsman and operations officer. she receives a promotion to full lieutenant in a matter of months, and less than a year into her time on the antioch, their chief of operations dies in an accident. though not the senior officer in the operations division, the ship’s captain appoints una to serve as temporary chief of operations until starfleet can assign them a replacement. though she enjoys the role, the captain’s choice to promote her over her more veteran colleagues ( along with her personality, often seen as standoffish ) earns her a great deal of ill-will. the antioch is not a particularly important vessel, and it takes starfleet most of a year to assign them a replacement, at which point una transfers.
she takes a posting aboard the uss elysium, a science vessel, as head of the astrophysics department. a year later, she is promoted to chief science officer, and another year later, given a promotion to lieutenant commander.
two years later ( at thirty ), her former captain aboard the uss antioch, now in command of the uss antares, requests that she be assigned to his ship as chief of operations. he had been impressed by her performance, and finds himself with a woefully disorganized operations crew due to poor management by the previous chief. una accepts the challenge ( she’s ready for something new, regardless ). she serves as chief of operations for two years, though it takes her only months to get the departments into shape. at 32, una becomes the first officer of the uss antares.
her service record and the reputation she earns over a few short months prompt christopher pike** to request her as his first officer when he assumes command of the uss enterprise from robert april. the transfer comes with a promotion to commander.
a note: by the time of strange new worlds, she has served on enterprise as pike’s first officer for a total of eleven years. she has received several offers of her own command during that time, both between five year missions and during enterprise’s repairs before and after season two of discovery. she has declined them.
** this is default for this blog, based on discussions with odette. however, as an alternative, by request: starfleet, seeking to put a new, outside perspective on the command team of enterprise, impressed by una’s work as first officer aboard the antares, and believing that she will offer a balance to pike’s style of command, assigns her to enterprise as pike assumes command.

[The King Heritage] - Alveda King
The late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. taught that people “must learn to live together as brothers and sisters or perish together as fools,” and his message still holds true in a nation that has become increasingly divided, his niece, Alveda King, said Monday, on the federal holiday that honors her uncle.
“I believe we can begin to learn to live together as brothers and sisters with personal accountability,” King said on Fox News’ “Fox and Friends.” “We have to realize that we are one human race, not separate races.”
King said she’s personally decided “not to argue, not to fuss, even though my political views may vary and be different from others’.”
For example, she said, she is “very pro-life” and she will “continue to say that it is a civil wrong to abort a baby” but she won’t argue or fight with others about it.
“I believe we can heal if we begin to communicate with compassion rather than anger,” said King.
She added that she believes her uncle’s advice today would be to “listen to God.”
“You have to remember Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist preacher, so he would be telling us to look to God and to pray for those who are in authority so that we can have peaceful lives,” said King. “So we pray for our leaders, when we don’t agree we peacefully make that known. We have other elections and things coming up. We can vote again soon. So be aware of that as well.”
King added that her uncle taught that “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. So as Americans — one race, one group of people still living here in America together — we are going to have to work very hard to see America grow and not be destroyed.”
