Things that could’ve fixed the awkward Eric/Rachel/Nick drama in House of Ashes imo:

The love triangle is omitted entirely and the fandom is left to ship as it pleases

They have the conversation before the briefing and that’s that

They try to have the conversation in the Star Cave and get shamed into dropping it for the time being by Jason and Salim

(Alternately, Jason steps in Murray Bauman-style and insists they get their shit together before they drive him insane)

There’s no big conversation at all, just a little tension from knowing there’s a problem but they’re professional and save that for post-game

All three have multiple chances to bond Jalim-style depending on dialogue options and QTEs, possibly resulting in them behaving more like a polycule by the end

Rachel straight-up kisses Clarice in front of Nick and Eric after they make it to the “safety” of the temple

Imagine all the house of ashes getting drunk.

Salim is a giggly bitch. He can't stop smiling or chuckling at any little thing he finds amusing. He tries to keep himself quiet.

Jason is also a happy drunk, but he's loud. He hollers and laughs with a slap of his knee, someone else's back, or the table. He speaks loudly, not having a clear head to register his volume. He is uncoordinated, tumbling over himself, things, people, everything. But he'll laugh about it.

Nick is relatively the same, if not a bit quieter. He sits back and enjoys everything around him from the people he's with or the room he's in. He doesn't talk a lot unless spoken to, or he feels he needs to. He becomes rather peaceful.

Eric's personality does a 180. He becomes confident and even a little flirtatious towards Rachel (and Nick if you ship that. I do), and he's not subtle with it. He'll say things he'll most definitely regret the next day, but drunk words are sober thoughts as they say.

Rachel is like Nick, quiet. But she's relaxed, finally able to shrug off the cold exterior she uses to keep herself safe. She'll let out a laugh every now and then if she finds something particularly funny.

@ctrvpani has kinda given me a bug with the lovely new work they put out so headcannons are going to be KingKay and RoyalKay based today.

After everything they went through down there Nick had no idea what to make of everything. Rachel had dumped both of them, her words echoing in his head every time he sat down on the cot CENTCOM had assigned him for quarantine.

"You both need to stop! Eric, you can't expect me to be the same person you knew a year ago, even then, we may have been together but, your head was so buried in Cealus I might as well have not existed!"

Rachel turned to Nick next, he had hope until she began to speak.

"Nick, you've been using me as a distraction from what happened, and I'm sorry for taking advantage of that but, I can't keep doing this! We all have shit we need to work through, and this fucked up love triangle isn't helping any of us! Now we need to go find Kolchek.

Nick should at least have felt some gratification at the fact Eric hadn't gotten Rachel either but the look of hurt on the man's face had Nick wanting to give him some form of comfort. The Colonel had saved his ass not ten minutes ago and about fell down that damn hole, Nick had a new found respect for the man.

For weeks now they had been going through test after test, questioning after questioning, and Nick was sure everyone was going crazy at this point. The psych evals had been the worst at first, but shrinks actually seemed like they wanted to help. They had given him a journal and a pen, stating it might help him process everything that happened if talking didn't help. He just began to write everything, how he was feeling, the random thoughts that had gone through his head and the things he'd been afraid of. It took him a week to admit on paper he didn't hate Eric as much as he thought he would, another three days to admit he admired the man's intelligence and, finally, that he'd been frustrated at the fact Nick found him attractive. The fact that all the man had to do was strut into base like he did and had Nick checking him out despite being wrapped in Rachel's arms a few minutes beforehand.

His entries on Rachel had changed as well, he sat down and took a good look at the flaws he'd been ignoring, no longer placing her on a pedestal like he had before. She was right, they all had their issues, she'd been the only to actually stop and see them. It stung to realize how much he'd fucked up the whole situation out of a selfish need to grab onto a distraction vs actually facing things the right way. Hell, he needed to apologize to Jason for acting an ass to him instead of focusing on survival down there. He'd been trying to make his friend face something that he hadn't even fully faced himself.

All that reflection Nick had given time to observe everyone, he wondered when or if Jason was going to come to him about Salim. The two of them had been acting like fools now that the glowworms had taken them out from under the microscope, he was happy for them though, glad someone could get a happy ending out of this shit show.

The Kings, he'd noticed looked as miserable as he felt, Rachel had lost a lot of fire after they had removed the parasite from her. It scared him to put her into the cocoon but he didn't know if she'd take any comfort from him. Eric had been just as distant, he seemed to always have a computer in hand, almost absentmindedly taking it apart to put it back together again. He hated to see them like this, two highly motivated individuals that, admittedly, he found attractive were losing their spark and he hated it. He had to figure out something, he thought looking at Eric and Rachel, because he helped to fuck it up, now he was going to try to help fix it.
