Review: "The Kinsmen Universe" by Ilona Andrews
Review: “The Kinsmen Universe” by Ilona Andrews
Quick, but long-ish review for a progressive read, and also quite late. I finished this three-book trilogy in the month of October and I’m just getting around to reviewing it in November. This wasn’t too long of a read for me though – I flew through it when I picked it up. It’s my first full read from Ilona Andrews in quite some time. Originally I had picked this up realizing that it was part of…

Ok, I said in this post that I wanted to talk about POV and what different characters would use for their species; I've been thinking about it for a while, because it's important to me to portray Elves as thinking of themselves as the default and I like having them think of mortals as different, as a way of worldbuilding and establishing POV. It's the same basic principle as why I think the War of the Elves and Sauron is a Númenórean name, not an Elvish one.
In brief: man and woman can and should be used to refer to Elves when writing from an elven POV.
I think about markedness a lot when I think about writing generally, and one of the concepts is that there are things that are unmarked, the standard, the default, the normal, the unexceptional. To an elf, the default species is elf, not human or dwarf or ent. I want to write from that POV - to an elf, humans are different, even alien. They're other. Elves are us, humans are them.
I, meanwhile, am writing in English, and man and woman are common words, the most "unmarked" words for the concepts; they're standard (e.g., woman sounds more normal than female human). Something like elf woman or female elf is more marked. Why would an elf use a more marked term to refer to their own race? Using she-elf or whatever for Elves but woman for humans uses more marked words (more uncommon, more specific, etc) for elves than it does for humans - but for elves, it should be the opposite! Elves are unmarked! Elves are default! Humans are different. If an elf is talking about someone, the default assumption would be that the someone is an elf, so if they're not an elf, it would be specified.
So when writing from the POV of an elven character, I would use woman for a female elf and mortal woman for a female human (if necessary to disambiguate). Man, meanwhile, means "Human" when it's capitalized and male when it's not. (Now, if I were writing from a human or dwarven pov, I would use elven woman, if necessary to specify that she's an elf.)
But, you say, what about using Elvish words? Well, first of all, I hate it. We're not writing in Quenya. English is great, and so are the other human languages people use to write fanfic. But that is a subjective matter of taste and you may disagree! Nothing wrong with that, de gustibus, etc.
More objectively, nér and nis are not words specific to Elves; nér means all males, so using it for specifically elf men and not human and dwarven men is incorrect (to quote Elfdict, "Nér can be used regardless of species and so is equally applicable to male Elves, Men, or Dwarves, but is unlikely to be used of male animals, for which the word [ᴹQ.] hanu is more applicable."") (Sindarin is a little more complicated, given the more complex out-of-universe changes, but it too has race-neutral terms for man and woman.)
Lastly, Tolkien himself uses man and woman to refer to non-human species. He calls Galadriel and Finduilas women, and Aredhel is "taller than a woman's wont." Earendil is a man (though he is not a Man) and Curufin is a horseman and there are lots and lots of kinsmen and kinswomen. Hobbits meanwhile, in Appendix F, have "women" and "man-children" (Tolkien is talking about how Hobbits name babies, thus the children part, but I like to think he's getting one more dig in at Pippin).

Do you ever think about how jarring it must have been, for the Turaga, to see the Matoran doing their work after the move to Mata Nui?
Like... Think about it. Metru Nui was a very, very rigid caste system. Everyone was made for a role, they'd fulfil that role, they wouldn't change from that role for thousands of years. And more pertinently, those roles were largely academic, borne of a highly developed civilisation. Then, you get to Mata Nui, and suddenly everything changed. Everyone just lost all of their memories, and with that a huge amount of their identities, and their previous roles with it. In fact, many of their roles are just outright nonexistent, in a world of stone and wood, with no city, with no Metrus, with nothing that the Turaga would have known. Indeed, Matau's first reaction to Mata Nui was "Where are the chutes?"!
Obviously, the Matoran could adapt - a blank slate can easily have anything imprinted onto it, after all, and they were made to work - but for the Turaga, who were watching their warped, diminished friends and kinsmen who sounded the same as before but acted perhaps very differently, and already had to suffer through the lie of concealing Metru Nui, it must have been bizarre in a way 'suffocating' couldn't possibly describe.
Imagine being Vakama, a craftsman among a city of crafters, who only ever made armour, being forced to see his fellow forgemates sharpen blades and call themselves a guard, a militia, an army, hunters and killers. Imagine much the same of Matau, who once spent his time driving new machines down clear tracks with his kin, now having to make do with tempermental Rahi in a twisting maze of branches and vines.
Imagine being Nokama or Nuju, who spent all their life prior as academics, pouring through tomes and staring at stars, watching as those untold millenia of knowledge simply disappear, to be replaced with hard physical chores like fishing or crafting or, indeed, fighting off Rahi. Imagine the same of Whenua, who once spent all his time studying creatures brought to him, now only providing the knowledge to make them go away, as the the scholars of all the Rahi life of the universe spend their days digging through the earth with pickaxes (not even drilling machines)!
Certainly, these are necessary roles, duties to be honoured and fulfilled to a a standard high enough to ensure continued life, but... In some ways, it must have been utterly humiliating. Sickening, even, to some.
Not to Onewa though. Pretty much nothing changed for him.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This train of thought brought to you by the new Essenger remake of the Mata Nui Online Game II Soundtrack, specifically https://youtu.be/MAierT0S82o?si=XB9s03CUTCRubFOn . I never played much of it, but I distinctly remembered Hali being a weaver, creating thread from flax fibres; which, given the hindsight of Ga-Metru being a giant university/research centre, makes the role seem strangely small in comparison to her duties before. Of course, now she's a Toa, I suppose she doesn't have time much for either!
[Edit: I posted this at midnight when I was falling alseep and totally got the names of Onewa, Nuparu, and Whenua muddled up... This happens a lot even when I'm fully awake though. Edited for clarity.]

Yannick Dupont
He/Him Breton Mid-20's
Birthsign: The Thief
Primary Attributes: Strength and Speed
Primary Skills: Acrobatics, Alchemy, Alteration, Athletics, Destruction, Hand-to-Hand, Mysticism
Secondary Skills: Light Armor, Stealth
Titles: Archmage of the Arcane University, The Grey Fox, Duke of Mania
Herbalist and part-time courier originally from the city of Northpoint. He grew up with his cousin Elise after his mother moved the families together after the disappearance of his father.
Bright, athletic, and talented in his own right, he could have easily found success in his kinsmen's questing culture. However, his easygoing demeanor and lack of ambition kept him out of the spotlight.
His move to Cyrodiil was the result of the most recent badgering from Elise to stop wasting his talent. The recent changes to advancement requirements in the Mages Guild chapters of the province gave him an opportunity to test his skills in a more competitive environment while still going at his own pace.
While his troubled relationship with death (and fear of the undead) meant his involvement in the dangerous work Elise threw herself into would be minimal, having to bail her out of prison for her many atrocities made him realize he may need to be more proactive after all.
Bonus art and comments after the break

Absolutely does not look like this in-game but that doesn't stop me lol
Y'know maybe I underestimated how much info I wanted to put on these going in lol
Anyways, fun fact! Technically, Yannick is the most recent incarnation of my very first TES character! (my attempts at Arena before my copy of Oblivion GOTY arrived don't count) He's just a composite between that and another character I created to play through the Thieves Guild/was basically just the Oblivion version of Duster from Mother 3.

THE BUDDHA'S RESPONSE TO THE "LIFE AFTER DEATH" QUESTION
The Buddha refused to answer what are called the Fourteen Unanswered Questions also known as the “Unwise Reflections” which dealt with things such as is there life after death, is self the same as the soul and is the universe eternal? Many of his earlier followers left the Buddhist movement when he refused to answer. One such was the monk Malunkya who threatened to leave Buddhism if the teacher did not answer. To which the Buddha told the following parable:
It's just as if a man were wounded with an arrow thickly smeared with poison. His friends and kinsmen provide him with a surgeon, and the man says:
'I won't have this arrow removed until I know whether the man who wounded me was a noble warrior, a priest, a merchant, or a worker.'
He goes on 'I won't have this arrow removed until I know the given name & clan name of the man who wounded me... until I know whether he was tall, medium, or short... until I know whether he was dark, ruddy-brown, or golden-colored... until I know his home village, town, or city... until I know whether the bow with which I was wounded was a long bow or a crossbow’
The man would die and those things would still remain unknown to him.
-- Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta
CONTINUITY
I’ve written before about the transcendent experiences I had as a child and then again as a recovering surgical patient. These experiences are real. There is no doubt about that. It was these experiences that set the course for my entire life. I can’t help but think that if I had not had them that my life would have been very different.
Now, the question is what the hell does it all mean?
I do not believe in the supernatural therefore there must be a natural explanation for these experiences. I have spent decades trying to figure this out. This inquiry led me to study many things notably religion, philosophy and neuroscience and this information has been very useful to me but my question is still unanswered.
What I gained from these experiences is an almost certainty that human existence is continuous through many lives. Not the concept but a certainty and this bothers me because I shouldn’t be certain of this. There is no conclusive evidence that this is the case though the study of DNA seems to hold some very possible and even probable explanations.
I wonder if these experiences will return when my dying day comes?

In the mystic traditions of the different religions we have a remarkable unity of spirit. Whatever religion they may profess, they are spiritual kinsmen. While the different religions in their historic forms bind us to limited groups and militate against the development of loyalty to the world community, the mystics have already stood for the fellowship of humanity in harmony with the spirit of the mystics of ages gone by.
Imagination, devotion, perseverance, together with divine grace, will assure your success. Knowing that material & spiritual progress are essential to man, we must ceaselessly work for the equal attainment of both. It is only when a people strike an even balance between scientific progress & spiritual & moral advancement that it can be said to possess a wholly perfect and complete personality and not a lopsided one.” - Haile Selassie

I. With voice and solemn music sing Loud let the pealing trumpets ring Today our hands consolidate The Empire of a thousand years. Delusive hopes, distracting fears, Have passed, and left her great, For Britain, Britain, we our jubilant anthems raise, Uplift your voices all, worthy is she of praise! III. No more we seek our Realm’s increase By War’s red rapine, but by white-winged Peace; To-day we seek to bind in one, Till all our Britain’s work be done―― Through wider knowledge closer grown, As each fair sister by the rest is known, And mutual Commerce, mighty to efface The envious bars of Time and Place, Deep-pulsing from a common heart And through a common speech expressed―― From North to South, from East to West, Our great World Empire’s every part; A universal Britain strong To raise up Right and beat down Wrong―― Let this thing be! who shall our Realm divide? Ever we stand together, Kinsmen, side by side!
IV. To-day we would make free The millions of their glorious heritage. Here, Labour crowds in hopeless misery; There, is unbounded work and ready wage. The salt breeze calling, stirs our Northern blood, Lead we the toilers to their certain goal; Guide we their feet to where Is spread, for those who dare, A happier Britain ’neath an ampler air.
V. First Lady of our British Race! ’Tis well that with thy peaceful Jubilee This glorious dream begins to be, This thy lost Consort would, this would thy Son, Who has seen all thy Empire face to face And fain would leave it One, Oh, may the Hand which rules our Fate Keep this our Britain great! We cannot tell, we can but pray Heaven’s blessing on our work to-day. Uprise, oh, Palace fair, where every eye may see This proud embodied Unity! For Britain and our Queen one voice we raise, Laud them, rejoice, peal forth, worthy are they of praise!

Return of The Great Khan
A rather old looking battleship emerged from the Maelstrom above Chogoris. Citizens of the chaos-torn planet and White Scars as well looked upon the ship with concern but also curiosity. As the hulking ship approached the planet, they could identify it as a battleship for the White Scars legion, even though it was ancient. Any attempts to contact those upon the ship were met with silence.
Jubal Khan, the current Great Khan of the White Scars pondered what to do with this information before asking if there were any identifying marks on the vessel. Once given, he ordered them to allow dropships to make landfall if any of them did.
One had begun to drop 3 hours later. White Scars gathered around the dropship, keeping themselves at the ready but quiet to see what would emerge. As the old door creeked open, the group was startled to hear the loud roar of an engine from within. The more veteran astartes recognized the sound as a Sojutsu Pattern Voidbike... but this one roared louder than any that they had heard before.
The group howled excitedly at the sound of what they knew to be a kinsman returned to them, though their sound stopped altogether as a massive jetbike carrying an equally massive woman launched out of the dropship. She howled enthusiastically as her ponytail whipped through the wind in a trail behind her.
Jaghatai Khan skidded to a halt just past her crowd of open-mouthed children before shouting to address them, "Truly the call of the hunt never ceases it's song, my great tribe!" She announced, "However, the call to hunt has brought me back to my White Scars!" With that sentence, the Khan raised her sword above her head and the astartes shouted back warcries in return.
"I know you all have not ceased the hunt!" There were cheers of agreement with her next words, "And I know you will not stop now that I have returned! Now let us do what we do best, as we always do, my kinsmen! Let us ride together our path of victory!" Loud, intense, and guttural chanting began at Jaghatai's words which shook the land around it. The people rejoiced for the Warhawk had truly returned. Although excited, and grinning wildly, the Khan did wonder about what sort of universe she had returned to, but she understood that she would find out soon enough. She did not realize the sort of disappointment that was waiting for her, however.

The Life of The Prophet Muhammad(pbuh): The Assignment of the Duty of the Prophethood and First Muslims
Declaration of the Prophethood and the First Phase of the Call
A religion that would address all of humanity and embrace the entire world was not going to remain a secret for too long. Since this religion was being sent as the means through which humanity could attain both worldly and spiritual peace, it was necessary to openly convey this message to the people.
Allah has attributed everything in the universe to the law of gradualness. Those who do not submit to and abide by this law will undoubtedly become unsuccessful in due time.
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) complied with this law upon receiving a mandate from Allah. He did not openly inform the people of his prophethood and Islam for a period of three years. He was incredibly cautious and prudent in delivering his message and explained the situation only to those he fully trusted.
We see that his decision was the cause for Islam’s success. Within the three-year period of the Era of Secret Conversions, many people took their place within Islam and strengthened his cause.
After the three-year period ended, there was no further reason for this invitation to remain a secret. The polytheists of the Quraysh had more or less heard everything and the Islamic cause had garnered much strength through many people. By virtue of this, the time had come for the call to Islam and the realities of Tawhid (the doctrine in the belief of Allah’s oneness) to be openly announced to the entire world.
The Invitation to his Close Relatives
Allah informed our Holy Prophet (PBUH) through revelation on where he should begin to openly deliver the invitation:
“And admonish thy nearest kinsmen”
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) knew that this undertaking would not be easy. For this reason, he did not leave his house for some period of time. During this period, he called Hazrat Ali and said to him: “Oh Ali, Allah orders me to warn my closest relatives of the punishment in the hereafter and this is very difficult for me. I know very well that I am going to see them attempt to make accusations against me in regards to something that I do not like once I mention this matter to them.”
We see that our Holy Prophet (PBUH) was worried that he would be subjected to accusations made by his relatives once he began to openly explain his cause to them. For that reason, he deemed it appropriate to stay in his home for some time and think everything through.  When Hazrat Safiyya saw that he had been absent and had not left his home for a long period of time, she went to go visit him along with his other aunts to learn about his condition. Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) said to them, “I have no complaints about anything and I am not ill. However, Allah has commanded me to warn my closest relatives of the punishment in the hereafter. I want to gather the Sons of Abdulmuttalib and invite them to testify to Allah.”
His aunts answered, “Invite them, but never dare try to invite Abu Lahab because he will never accept.” Following this, they said, “After all, we are women” and left.
Organizing a Feast!
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) then said to Hazrat Ali, “Prepare a meat dish that is enough for only one person and fill a cup with milk. Then gather the Sons of Abdulmuttalib, I want to talk with them. I am going to notify them with what I have been commanded to say.”
Hazrat Ali immediately fulfilled his order.
When morning came, all of our Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) uncles, including Abu Lahab, who had not been invited, and two women amounting to a total of 45 individuals, convened in Abu Talib’s home.
A Miracle
The meat in the pot was only enough to fill one person, and so was the cup filled with milk.
The Master of the Universe (PBUH) broke the meat into pieces and said to those who were attending the feast, “Bismillah (In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate), help yourselves!
Everyone at the feast ate from those pieces of meat until they were full. Lo and behold! What did they see?  The meat remained in its place with very little missing from it.
They were amazed and began to drink from the cup filled with milk. They drank till they were satiated and they saw that the milk had not decreased. They were astonished!
After the meal was completed and just as our Holy Prophet (PBUH) was about to speak, Abu Lahab intervened and addressed the crowd: We have not seen such an instance of black magic until now. Your friend has cast a great spell upon you all.”
Afterwards, he went as far as to affront the Master of the Universe (PBUH) and bellowed loudly so as to disrupt the crowd.
The crowd dispersed before our Holy Prophet (PBUH) had the chance to speak.
The Second Visit and Allah’s Messenger’s Address to his Relatives
After that inconclusive feast, our Holy Prophet (PBUH) arranged another event and gathered his relatives through the means of Hazrat Ali.
He rose to his feet after the meal finished and said: “Praise should only be given to Allah and I praise Him. I only seek help from Him. I believe and trust on Him. Just as I am undoubtedly aware of this fact, I also make known to you that there is no god other than Allah. He is One and there is no being similar to Him.” Afterwards, he disclosed his purpose:
“Surely a person who is sent to go look for pasture would not lie to his family. By God, even if I were to have lied to the rest of humanity, I still would not have lied to you. Even if I were to have deceived everyone else, I still would not have deceived you. I invite you to testify to Allah who is the Only True God. I am His Messenger, who has been specifically sent to you, the community, and all humanity.”
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH) continued to speak:
“By God, just as you fall asleep, you will also die, and just as you wake up from your sleep, you will also rise and be accounted for all of your actions. You will be rewarded for your good deeds and punished for your bad deeds.  As a result, you will stay forever either in Paradise or Hell. You are the first from among the people that I have frightened with the fear of punishment in the hereafter.”
When our Holy Prophet (PBUH) finished speaking, Abu Talib rose to his feet and said, “We will help you lovingly and sincerely. We have embraced and accepted your advice and have affirmed your words. Those who have gathered here are the sons of your grandfather. Consequently, I am one of them. I swear that the person to run the quickest among all those who run to fulfill your goals will be no other than me. Continue doing what you have been commanded to do. By God, I will not refrain from surrounding and protecting you for the slightest moment. However, my soul does not obey me to abandon the religion of Abdulmuttalib. I will die as a follower of his religion.”
His other uncles also affirmed his words and did not say anything to displease our Holy Prophet (PBUH).  There was only one exception, and that was Abu Lahab, who had opposed to the Islamic cause from the very beginning. He leaped forward and said, “Oh Sons of Abdumuttalib, by God this is a misfortune. Dissuade him from this before others hinder him. If you are to obey him being, you will be subjected to mortification and defamation; if you try to defend him, you will be killed.”
The brave answer to the most savage enemy of Islam came from Hazrat Safiyya: “O, brother! Does it suit you to leave your brother’s son and his religion helpless? By God, the living scholars say that a prophet is to emerge from Abdulmuttalib’s progeny. He is that Prophet!”
Abu Lahab arrogantly replied to his sister’s noble words: I swear that this hope is in vain. Besides, a woman’s words are at the level of an obstacle and a chain that is attached to a man’s foot. When the families of Quraysh and the entire Arabs riot together, what power will we have to resist them? By God, we are like a morsel that can be easily swallowed for them.”
Abu Talib was immensely annoyed by Abu Lahab’s words. “O coward” he said, “By God we are going to help and protect him as long as we live.”  Afterwards, he turned to our Holy Prophet (PBUH) and said, “Oh my brother’s son, let us know when you want to deliver the invitation so we can be armed and emerge together with you!”
“Who will Help me?”
Our Holy Prophet (PBUH), who had only listened to all that was being said up until that point, rose to his feet and said: Oh Sons of Abdulmuttalib! By God, I do not know anyone else from among the Arabs who has brought something that is more auspicious and superior than that what is most beneficial for both your life here and in the hereafter, which I have brought to you. I invite you to testify to two words that are easy on the tongue and that weigh heavily on a scale: Ashhadu anlaa ilaaha illallaahu wa ashhadu anna muhammadar-rasulallah (There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger.) Then, he asked, “In that case, which one of you accepts to become my helper and vizier by following me on this path?”
Nobody uttered a sound. All heads were bowed towards him. They were unable to find the strength to look at Allah’s Apostle (PBUH). However, there was only one person who looked very carefully into our Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) eyes. And that person was Hazrat Ali, who was only 12-13 years old at the time. He rose. However, our Holy Prophet (PBUH) told him to “sit down.”
The Master of the Universe (PBUH) asked his question thrice. And only Hazrat Ali replied each time: “O Allah’s Apostle, I will help you although I am much younger than them all.”
Some pursed their lips upon hearing these words, some were amazed, and some jeeringly smiled. Afterwards, they left the meeting without taking the meeting seriously.
Hazrat Ali’s heroism and bravery at a young age made our Holy Prophet (PBUH) immensely happy. He was not sad or in despair since he could not get the result he had wished from the meeting. Only Allah could give guidance.

On the 21st June 1813 the lawyer and poet W E Aytoun was born.
Born in Edinburgh, of a family of literary tastes his father, Roger Aytoun, was writer to the Signet, a private society of Scottish solicitors, dating back to 1594 and part of the College of Justice, the fierce Jacobitism and love of ballads of his mother, Joan Keir Aytoun, had a lasting influence upon Aytoun’s own political and literary preferences., which was to impact upon Aytoun’s own interests, and aid them in turn when he was preparing his Ballads of Scotland collection for publication.
Having tentatively followed his father into law, Aytoun was appointed Professor of Rhetoric and Belles Lettres at Edinburgh University in 1845. It was in this post that he excelled, and details of his lectures have led to him being declared ‘the first modern professor of English literature’. Prior to this appointment, his early works as a poet were the subject of inclusion in the renowned Blackwood’s Magazine, and he would go on to become an important contributor to the magazine in a number of guises. Indeed, his literary criticism exhibited much of the keen sense of parody that was the defining feature of his acclaimed dramatic verse, 'Firmilian’.
Working in a less comic mode, Aytoun produced the Lays of the Scottish Cavaliers, which remains one of his best known works, it wasn’t just Jacobitism in, Edinburgh After Flodden , a 15 verse classic, he brings the news to the Capital of our greatest defeat to the citizens of Edinburgh, in Charles Edward At Versailles, Aytoun puts himself into Bonnie Prince Charlie’s head as he is in his room on the Anniversary of Culloden thinking of the ghosts that haunt him…
“Must those scenes and sounds of terror Haunt me still by day and night?”
I’ve chosen, an extract from the telling of a hero killed at Killiecankie, The Burial-March of Dundee.
On the heights of Killiecrankie Yester-morn our army lay: Slowly rose the mist in columns From the river’s broken way; Hoarsely roared the swollen torrent, And the Pass was wrapped in gloom, When the clansmen rose together From their lair amidst the broom. Then we belted on our tartans, And our bonnets down we drew, And we felt our broadswords’ edges, And we proved them keen and true; And we prayed the prayer of soldiers, And we cried the gathering-cry, And we clasped the hands of kinsmen, And we swore to do or die! Then our leader rose before us On his war-horse black as night – Well the Cameronian rebels Knew that charger in the fight! – And a cry of exultation From the bearded warriors rose; For we loved the house of Claver’se, And we thought of good Montrose. But he raised his hand for silence – ‘Soldiers! I have sworn a vow : Ere the evening star shall glisten On Schehallion’s lofty brow, Either we shall rest in triumph, Or another of the Graemes Shall have died in battle-harness For his Country and King James! Think upon the Royal Martyr – Think of what his race endure – Think of him whom butchers murdered On the field of Magus Muir: – By his sacred blood I charge ye, By the ruined hearth and shrine – By the blighted hopes of Scotland, By your injuries and mine – Strike this day as if the anvil Lay beneath your blows the while, Be they covenanting traitors, Or the brood of false Argyle! Strike! And drive the trembling rebels Backwards o’er the stormy Forth; Let them tell their pale Convention How they fared within the North. Let them tell that Highland honour Is not to be bought nor sold, That we scorn their prince’s anger As we loathe his foreign gold. Strike! And when the fight is over, If ye look in vain for me, Where the dead are lying thickest, Search for him that was Dundee!’

Forgive me, but I'm going to take the opportunity to shamelessly plug an in universe headcannon for Rex’ name that I've adopted from an author on Ao3 independent_variables (formerly known as whymylife) because I love it. The idea is that "Rex" is short for/adapted from "Rexutu" based on the Taung warrior "Rexutu the Unconquerable" from the Mando'a epic the Dha Werda Verda
Just imagine little 7567 hearing/reading this:
"With death upon him Rexutu the Unconquerable prepared to be stripped of all by his enemy, but vowed that his honor would be the last to be torn away. And so the Unconquerable gathered his kinsmen and his oath girdlings alike. They polished their fearsome helms, that they might flash even in the weak sun of Notron. They rewrapped the hilts of their weapons and pounded straight the shafts, that they might slake their thirst in Zhell ichor a final time."
And it just really resonates with him. Especially "Rexutu the Unconquerable prepared to be stripped of all by his enemy, but vowed that his honor would be the last to be torn away."
And can you IMAGINE Rex during the war thinking about this scene from the epic as he and the last remnants of Torrent Company are preparing to make their last stand at Teth?
Because I can and it haunts me.

Who is Jesus of Nazareth?
A Devotional Study of the Gospel of Mark
Mark 6:1-6 — How Does Your Faith Amaze Jesus?
By xapitos.  All rights reserved. 2023-24.
Introduction
This study of the Gospel of Mark from the Christian Scriptures follows the premise to take a book at face value.  This is a common practice for books.  Thus, this study will look at the historical, cultural, archaeological and grammatical context of Mark’s Gospel to see if it truly is what it claims to be, namely the words of the God of the Hebrews, without any errors and final in authority to all that it speaks, claiming that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Messiah of Israel, who shall deliver his people, and the world of mankind from our rebelliousness against the holy LORD of Israel, King of the universe.  If errors are discovered, then the Gospel of Mark will be assumed to be false.  Until such a discovery, the book is accepted at face value.
I translate the Gospel of Mark from its Greek manuscripts and follow the paragraph divisions of The Greek New Testament, Third edition by the United Bible Societies.  Thus, my Scripture reading may vary from yours here and there in small details.  The Hebrew Scripture references are from the Masoretic Text of the Hebrew Scriptures in the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia edition of the Masoretic Text.  The Masoretic Text was copied by Hebrew scribes about 1000 A.D. and has been substantiated by various Hebrew manuscripts, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Septuagint (dated third to second centuries B.C.), which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures.   The English version of the Holy Bible used in this study is the New International Version, known as the NIV.
It is necessary to say a word about the translation of the Greek text.  I intentionally translate the Greek as it is written, not smoothing out the English translation, as is done in English Bibles based on the original biblical languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek.  At times, the translation will come across awkward, wooden, and repetitive in English. Translating from one language to another can appear this way.  Another involved factor is that it is obvious that God wrote the New Testament the way he did to emphasize what he wanted to emphasize through the Greek grammar and sentence structure.  Without translating this way, such divine emphases might be missed by the English.
It is interesting to note, to me at least, that Mark continues to use the conjunction “and,” at the beginning of almost every clause.  Some might call this poor grammar.  I call it a “child’s heart.”  Remember when your children were (or are) young and when they became excited, they just talked and talked, almost without breathing?  This is what Mark’s continual use of “and” shows me.  He is so excited about Jesus and his story, that it appears that he cannot wait to tell us everything he learned from the apostle Peter (Simon) about Jesus.  May each of us have such a child’s heart.
Study
Mark 6:1-6 (1) And he left there and went to the hometown of him, and they followed him his disciples.  (2) And when it was the sabbath, he began to teach in the synagogue.  And many listening were shocked saying, Where this one these things, and what the wisdom this given to him and the power these through the hands of him being? (3) Not this is the carpenter, the son of Mary, and a brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon?  And not are the sisters of him here with us?  And they were stumbling in him.  (4) And he was saying to them Jesus, “Not is a prophet without honor except in his hometown and amongst his kinsmen and in his own house.  (5)  And not able there to do many powers, except a few sickly laying on his hands he healed. (6) And he was amazed because of the unbelief of them.
And they were stumbling by him.  The verb used for “were shocked” is a compound verb, denoting intense action. They people were really, really “shocked” to see “the carpenter, the son of Mary, stand up, teach, and perform “powers” (miracles).  Their familiarization with Jesus caused them to stumble, another compound verb, denoting an intense action.  Note that the two compound verbs in verses 2 and 3 apply to the people of Nazareth…were shocked and were stumbling. These are people whom Jesus has known all his life.  When Jesus lived there, Nazareth was a small village.  Thus, everybody knew everybody.  If you have lived in a small town, village, or hamlet, you know what this means.  Some people just cannot accept who Jesus claims to be, what he teaches, and the miracles he does.  The issue is not him.  The issue is them.
(4) And he was saying to them Jesus, “Not is a prophet without honor except in his hometown and amongst his kinsmen and in his own house.  The real issue in life is not who Jesus claims to be, but whom we believe him to be.  His hometown folks allowed their familiarization with Jesus to hold back their faith.
(5)  And not able there to do many powers, except a few sickly laying on his hands he healed. (6) And he was amazed because of the unbelief of them.  The level of our faith determines the degree to which the Lord works in our lives.  He is always willing to work in our lives.  Our willingness to allow him to is the key.  Our faith can open us up to the Divine in ways that we cannot comprehend nor imagine.  Or, our faith can prevent the Divine from performing his powers and teaching his teachings.  How is your faith?  Even the Lord God Almighty will not waste his energy, teachings and powers on those who do not want him.
Self-reflection
How does your familiarization with Jesus hold you back, hinder you from growing closer to him?
In what ways is your faith drawing you closer to him, his teachings and abilities?
In what way does your faith amaze Jesus?
