watching modern animated shows is so frustrating bc you can always pinpoint the exact episode/season that the people who poured all their love into a program were told to wrap it up. why do tv execs think they can make the next atla without having those not-particularly-necessary-but-still-important interlude episodes

Remember when Steven Universe almost ended over Ruby and Sapphire’s wedding, but when the network understood how popular it was they continued the series for a movie and a spin-off?
And then She-ra was able to capitalize off of that success and get approved to have Adora and Catra kiss and end up together at the end of the series?
And then The Owl House was able to capitalize off of that success and was allowed to have Luz and Amity be canon love interests from season one?
And in the meantime there was show after show featuring queer main and side characters to rave reviews and success?
And we all thought, this is it. The domino effect is working. We’re making progress. And animation was the industry with the most and some of the best queer representation in all of visual media and it was only growing?
And then The Owl House got canceled with nothing to replace it. And Kipo and OK KO and Dead End and every other queer-inclusive show that had popped up in the meantime all ended quickly or were canceled with nothing new to fill their holes.
And now we have nothing left. And the trend that had been escalating for the past 10 years to create a golden age of queer animation has seemingly been shot dead with nothing to show for it.
Remember that?

Do you ever feel like the world did not appreciate Kipo enough? Like on the one hand, glad to avoid the discourse. But on the other hand it was SO GOOD why did Tumblr not eat it up????
of the netflix original animated series I've seen, it's by far the best, and it's SORELY unappreciated. I'm so bitter about this. it wouldn't have gotten so ignored if it was released weekly instead of entire seasons at once. I wanted the art book SO BAD and NETFLIX CANCELLED IT
I know in my heart that if Kipo was any more popular Jamack would have been a tumblr sexyman

I find the fact that Hugo seems to be far more likely to ascribe ulterior motives to Wolf than to Kipo to be incredibly funny.
In 'All That Glitters', while Kipo is definitely doing it all out of love, everything Kipo does is an attempt to guide him towards her ideal outcome. And yet Hugo takes her at her word every time she insists otherwise. This despite her proving herself capable of outmaneuvering him (telegraphing her contingency plan in doing so) with her secret farmer rebellion in Corndog King. She played him like a fiddle in season 2 and yet in season 3 he still seems to be operating under the idea that she's too naive to ever be plotting anything behind anyone's back.
Meanwhile, Wolf is never anything but straight-forward in achieving her goals. She's consistently blunt in her methods and reasoning, yet Hugo is constantly looking for the hidden angle (that just isn't there). In 'Prahmises' he immediately assumes that Wolf tracked him down in order to interfere with his plan to assassinate Dr Emilia and is initially skeptical when she says otherwise.
All this is especially hilarious because Kipo's not even subtle. Like, at all. Like I pointed out earlier: she essentially revealed her back-up plan to Hugo while they played Corndog King and it just sailed past his radar. On the other hand, everyone else has always known that Kipo's kind actions, while genuine, are also part of Kipo's plan to bring about world peace. They just go along with it, usually because they know that trying to talk her out of it won't work. Wolf, Lio, Benson, even Dr Emilia, they all know Kipo's scheming. Hugo's the only one who somehow keeps missing the memo.

Dan Stevens Replaces Justin Roiland As Korvo In 20th Television Animation's ‘Solar Opposites’ Season 4 Slated For August 14
Dan Stevens (ITV "Downton Abbey", Dreamworks Animation Television "Kipo And The Age Of The Wonderbeasts") has been tapped to take over the lead role in the animated series that was originally created by Mike McMahan (Star Trek: Lower Decks) and Roiland, who was ousted in January amid domestic violence charges.
The animated series, from exec producers Mike McMahan and Josh Bycel, will return with its fourth season in August 14 on Hulu,Disney+ Worldwide and Star+. Stevens will take over voicing the character of Korvo, a grouchy alien who always wears ceremonial robes and professes to hate Earth. He desperately wants to fix their spaceship so he can escape to a new planet.
A Solar Opposites Valentine’s Day special is set for February 2024. The series, which counts McMahan and Josh Bycel as exec producers, scored an early season five renewal back in October 2022.
The series has been one of Disney's most sucessful adult animated franchises within the 20th Century Studios brand

Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts (2020)
Tumblr media
Propaganda Below
No Propaganda sent in by submitter
Personal: To be honest this is one I personally have not finished but that doesn't mean it isn't worth a watch. Kipo is a great cartoon even from just the one season I've personally seen of it I could see that about it. The animation and style is really fun but its the color pallet that really wows me personally. The colors are just phenomenal. The story too! Where, again, I haven't finished this the worldbuilding and story I did see of it was awesome.
Google: "The young adult animated series follows a girl named Kipo Oak, who is searching for her father after being forced to flee from her burrow, and must explore the post-apocalyptic surface world ruled by mutated animals to find him."

Are there any redemption arcs/stories that you've found that actually did a good job with the issue?
There have been a few.
The obvious go-to that just about everyone thinks of when they think "good redemption arcs" is, of course, Zuko from Avatar.
As deuteragonist of the series, his patterns of belief and their impact on his behavior are put under a microscope pretty much from the get-go. The story takes tremendous care to examine what he believes, why he believes it, how hard it is to break away from it, and how fulfilling it is to finally let go of the toxic incentives that have guided him.
People have been trying to reinvent Zuko for years with mixed results. Often overlooking that what made Zuko work was that we really truly got to know him as a complex and nuanced human being, inside and out.
I'm also partial to Scarlemagne of Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. This character is a lot more despicable than Zuko, but we get to see him broken down psychologically over the course of the third season.
Rather than going straight from villain defeat to redemption, Scarlemagne spends much of the third season in prison having philosophical debates with protagonist Kipo. During this time, not only is he able to express and examine his system of belief, but she gets to express hers - ultimately converting him into a true believer in her own methodology over time.
By the time Scarlemagne officially becomes a protagonist, it's only on the back of watching him develop and change from the confines of his much-deserved prison cell.
For a Star Wars example, since Vader was where I started ranting about redemption today, there's Agent Kallus of Star Wars: Rebels. Kallus starts out as an Imperial officer and recurring villain until a Bottle Episode strands him and a Rebel protagonist, Zeb, into a survival situation together.
The whole episode is spent hashing out Kallus and Zeb's different perspectives. Kallus doesn't come around during these talks; By the end of the episode, they go their separate ways and Kallus returns to the Empire. But having this time to debate belief systems with Zeb plants a seed of doubt in Kallus. He begins questioning fascism in ways he hadn't before, ultimately bearing fruit when he becomes a secret Rebel informant - rightfully assuming that no one would trust his intel if they knew who he was.
Also partial to the entirety of The Good Place and My Name is Earl, both of which are shows centered around questions of morality, personal development, and redemption - and which both examine the topics in great detail, despite being very different tonally.

Read that post about black and pink being best friends and inmediately thought of Kipo, so here's some of her in fun poses.
ID: a digital drawing that is colored in bright pink and black only. The drawing has five Kipos Oak (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts). In the first four, shes human and has different poses, the first one is giving us her back, showing her leather jacket seen at the end of season three, while she smiles back at us; in the second one, she is wearing the oversized sweater that she tries at the beggining of the series, she's spreading her arms out, closing her eyes, smiling and turning around; in the third pose, she seems to be leaning against the wall, barely lifting her right leg and looking at the viewer, she wears the overalls that she also tries in the first episode; in the last human pose, she lifts herself with one arm, while the rest of her body is parallel to the ground, she has her jaguar arms and is in the ending outfit. The last Kipo is the mega jaguar, she comes from the right, roaring angrily towards the left, you can only see her head, and the upper part of her forelegs. At the bottom left, there's the post that inspired this drawing, it is by tumblr user nat-20s and says "idk why people seem to think that if you love pink you hate black or vice versa. Black and pink are not opposing colors in fact they are best friends that kiss sometimes". End ID.

For those looking for shows/animes/movies with good lgbt ships, here is a list of ones I personally like. Some of these are canon some are not.
Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (animated show) - Netflix - canon wlw ship and has a character with 2 dads. (Plenty of queer coding aswell)
Heartstopper (live action show) - Netflix canon wlw and mlm ship and a trans (mtf) character, asexual character.
Stranger Things (live action show) - Netflix - canon gay, lesbian and bisexual characters as well as alot of queer coding
Arcane (animated show) - Netflix - semi canon wlw ship
Kipo and the age of Wonderbeasts (animated show) - Netflix - canon mlm ship, Canon non-binary character
She-Ra and The Princess of Power (animated show) - Netflix - canon wlw ship and canon poly ship, a non-binary character and a character with 2 dads
Sk8 the Infinity (anime) - crunchyroll - 1 canon gay character, 1 semi canon gay character as well as many queer coded ones
Sasaki to Miyano (anime) - crunchyroll - 2 canon mlm ships
My Hero Acadamia (anime) - crunchyroll - 2 canon trans characters, 1 canon bisexual character (not the best rep but as long as you stick to the good part of the fandom there is so many good ships)(personally I recommend the manga over the anime tho :])
Luca (movie) - Disney+ soooo much queer coding, no canon ships
The Owl House (Animated show) - Disney+ - canon wlw ship and a non-binary character + a ship for that non-binary character. Character with 2 dads
The Maze Runner (live action film series) - Disney+ (there is also books) - canon gay character
Venom 1&2 (live action movie) - Disney+ - semi canon monster x human mlm ship I think (idk in the comics they are canon and have a kid tho-)
Camp Camp (animated show) - season 1,2,3 youtube, all seasons on RoosterTeeth - queer coding/ kinda canon bi character, one character has 2 dads
Sonic the Hedgehog 1&2 (animated movies) - Amazon Prime Video - canon mlm ship
Marble Hornets (found footage style horror) - YouTube - (the main focus is horror/story and not ships but the creators have confirmed some gay characters) 1 Canon gay character, 1 half Canon lesbian character, 1 Canon non-binary character (in the comics)
Helluva Boss (animated show) - YouTube - 2 bi characters, 1 pan character, 1 character who I think is either gay or queer idk, plenty of canon lgbt ships (Most of the characters are lgbt I don't think I can name them all these are just the main ones💀)
The Goldfinch (live action movie and novel) - Binge - mlm ship but Idk what their sexualities are.
IT 1 & 2 (2017) (live action horror movies) - Binge - Canon gay character, (not great movies for people who get offended though it has some... questionable jokes.)
I also personally like Sherlock and how gay that show was but ik alot of people hated that show due to its queerbaiting so that's why I didn't add it in.
(even if u don't watch Marble Hornets for the ships, maybe it's just my hyperfixation on this show but it's like 14 years old and deserves a bigger fan base and respect cuz its probably the best of its style of horror I have ever seen and the characters are amazing and the story and it makes my writing brain happy :] )
I'll update this as I watch more shows/animes/movies

What are some western cartoons you've enjoyed?
Amphibia
Tumblr media
A fun western take of Isekai, without the wish fulfillment escapism that plagues Isekai, which was actually criticized with the character of Marcy, with a lovable cast, great animation and a well made story with a bittersweet yet satisfying ending.
Hilda
Tumblr media
The best modern cartoon period, a cozy and sweet yet action packed and even sometimes dark adventure show about a little girl exploring her magical realism world.
Gravity Falls
Tumblr media
Not nearly as fantastic as everyone and their mom claims to be, but still a great show, with tons of good characters, excellent animation, and an overarching plot that while ultimately flawed (the second half of season 2 really dropped the ball on that one) was still great.
She-Ra
Tumblr media
Great solid show from beginning to end, but especially towards the end when the silly princess stuff finally began to be properly integrated with the actual plot. Also Catra best character don’t @ me.
Kipo
Tumblr media
The most underrated modern cartoon I’ve seen, a superb show with a great story, characters and a truly unique setting, not to mention it did the whole villain redemption thing everyone and their mom was doing at the time, but actually did it fantastically.
Invincible
Tumblr media
Like many others I was drawn in by the brutality of the first episode, and boy did it just keep getting better after it! Just skip everything with Amber in it, and you should be in for the best animated superhero show since JLU.
Arcane
Tumblr media
Love it! From beginning to end it was a wild ride of a show, and this is coming from someone that only knows about LoL through memes and porn. At times it almost felt like I was watching an extended movie.
The Amazing World of Gumball
Tumblr media
This has to be the funniest modern show there is, at least before they decided to use a ton of “funny faces”, when it went down to being among the funniest. Still, a love letter to animation, featuring just about every style of it there is, and with an extremely weird yet fun cast of characters.
Before jumping back to anime I used to watch a ton of these, so I’m sure there’s more, but these are on too of my head and from the last decade, but I can honestly tell you, that my favorite cartoon of all time is:
Courage the Cowardly Dog
Tumblr media
There’s just not a single bad episode in it, and every character has been as memorable as Courage himself.
Dishonorable mentions:
The Owl House: Amphibia but actually embracing the bad of Isekai.
Steven Universe: Started weird, got good but ultimately fell down the stairs due to its terrible obsession with finding good things about terrible people.
OK KO: Garbage character models and too obsessed with making references.
Adventure Time: Everything wrong with modern animation.
Regular Show: Modercai is a simp and just looking at the guy gives me cringe.
Bee and Puppycat: Everything wrong with AT and SU COMBINED.
Korra: Not canon

Feel free to use these ideas if you want! You do not need to credit me, but just let me know you did so I can read it.
Details for the story ideas under the cut
Kidnapped and forced to do maths
Pretty self-explanatory, they get locked in cells equipped with digital blackboards and stuff and can’t leave until they answer enough questions right. Penalties for wrong answers is death. Perhaps opportunities for teamwork?
Kipo and the age of Wonderbeasts au
Might not make sense if you haven’t seen Kipo but Carmilla uses megamute dna to try and make humans able to live on the surface, but after getting kicked out of her burrow, she has to wander the surface, looking for humans desperate enough to accept her ‘help’. I already have a bulletfic for how each of them gets found and mutated
Steven Universe au
Mechanisms as the Off-Colors. Gems thst either rebelled against or were thrown out by the diamonds. They wander the galaxy, and sometimes assist gem rebellions. The moon war was fought over earth’s moon base, between the crystal gems and those loyal to the Diamonds.
Doctor who TMA au
Jon and Jonny were brothers on Gallifrey, and while Jon excelled in timelord school and became The Archivist, Jonny was distracted by paying off his father’s debts and failed, never to receive the title of “the Captain” or 12 regenerations. He didn’t stay mortal for long, as Carmilla found him like in cannon and mechanized both of his hearts. They stole a TARDIS called Aurora and fled to the stars. Many many years later, The Archivist finds his long lost brother when taking his companions, Martin, Tim, and Sasha to the Steamworld Intergalactic Music Festival
False domestic psychological prison
An enterprising young member of an intergalactic authority comes up with a new idea for these immortal criminals’ containment: the only prison the Mechanisms can’t escape is the one they don’t know they’re in. They capture the mechanisms and through a combination of the sedative effects of the Lotus, and some memory altering microchips, they get the Mechanisms to think they are just (mostly) normal people on a normal planet. To make them less likely to escape, they gave them something they never could have had before. Jonny gets respect as the owner of a tailor shop, with workers who call him sir, and trust and obey his judgement. Brian, as a priest is listened to in all his advice and praised for his wise moral decisions. Will they realize it’s a trick? Or stay living this lie forever?
Spaceteam fic
The Aurora gets stuck in a strange wormhole (bifrost?) and she can’t operate anything but basic piloting. Suddenly strange new controls are on the bridge, as well as whole other consoles of controls. Instructions for what to do are provided on screens, but they don’t match the control each mechanism sees on their console. Luckily they’re all within shouting distance, but they will have to learn to work together… as a spaceteam. Set Sigmaclapper to 5! Soak Ferrous Holospectrum! Baste the Emergency Whittler!
Summer Camp Councilors
Human au where the mechanisms are councilors at Camp Cosmo, with wacky hijinks, camp names, and songs. Several units of cabins inspired by the 4 story albums, a great spot on a canal with sea kayaking, regular kayaking, sailing, and canoeing. A high ropes and low ropes course, an archery range, and an arts and crafts area are also present for those who aren’t water crazy. Pack up your sense of adventure and extra flashlight batteries! Hopefully the campers won’t get into any drama…
Kofi rat from Small Saga meets Marius
This is for the KofiAssam fans out there! Our very own rat-tailed rover finds themself on a massive metal god dwelling and encounters The Metal Armed God!
Or
Marius Von Raum finds a rat wearing clothing that seems to be able to play the mandolin. Good thing he learned to speak rat when he and Toy Soldier went to that candy planet where Toy Soldier somehow became a prince…
Steam Powered Giraffe roleswap
What if Doctor Carmilla lived on earth and created nine singing automatons that could self repair?
What if Colonel P. A. Walter mechanized 6 humans with blue matter to create a force of galactic heroes, that then forgot their original names?
1920s American speakeasy
Probably heavily based on Lackadaisy. Carmilla’s Speakeasy is a great place to get illegal alcohol, and its secret entrance is inside the Cafe Aurora. The owner, Carmilla herself is illusive at best, and her seeming to only show her face at night has lead to rumors of her being a vampire or witch. Rumors that are only worsened when she gave each of her employees a strange new gift: pins, that she insists are a new part of their uniform to be worn at all times. The purpose of the pins is made clear when Jonny is shot by a rival rumrunner while on a job and comes back from the dead.
SCP contains Brian and Toy Soldier
Brian was on MJE and Toy Soldier was under direct orders from a researcher to not escape. The only question is would Doctor Bright be an expert on immortality, or would letting him know about The Mechanisms be a terrible idea?
Marius backstory oneshot based on the christmas armistice
There are many things Byron Marius expected to hear in the middle of a war. The pound of bullets, the screams of other soldiers, and crash of giant robot mechas overhead. What he didn’t expect to hear was singing.
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht
That’s all, folks
I have way too many ideas.

This "very bad person should never get backstory or depth" insistence sounds like cope (if they had the time to show the backstory but ended the same, I'm sure people wouldn't be saying they shouldn't have), is very concerning and strange, and I hope future storytellers don't take this as inspiration that the world needs more villain stories that end unsatisfying purposely. It's so obvious that it's what it is because they had to trim fat, or they wouldn't have given Belos a backstory at all.
Part of it is coping, the other half of the fandom likes Belos' ending because he "deserved" it and some even think that a sympathetic backstory would mean that the writers are trying to "redeem" him in some way. When no, that's not how any of that works.
Also, I'm tired of fans insisting it's bold or revolutionary for a kid's show to not redeem their main villain or give them a tragic backstory. Most Big Bads are just villains and no attempt is made to make them sympathetic (Bill Cypher, Ozai, Horde Prime, Dr. Emilia from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, etc). You will have abused lackeys or even secondary antagonists redeemed but then there's always that one final boss villain who is just there to be defeated and is actually the cause of all the suffering in the plot.
Belos could have been a character who was the Main Villain and had a sympathetic backstory that wasn't trite and he would have died as the Tragic Villain he was. But the writers dropped all that and decided not to answer any questions regarding him despite building it up for two seasons.
Future writers: don't focus on trends or trying to "subvert" what's popular. Just tell a good, well-structured story. Trust your audience. Remember that set-up and pay off are critical. And that the ending can make or break your story.

Alright it's almost Hispanic Heritage month again yall. Here's a list of Animated characters that I, a Latina, cried over when I found out they were Latin American
For clarification, "Found out" means, having no previous knowledge of said characters and within the context of the show/movie they are confirmed Latin American.
(From the perspective of a Costa Rican 🇨🇷 specifically)
The entire Madgrial Family (Encanto)
Tumblr media
The moment I saw the teaser trailer for Encanto I started crying. I was so BEYOND EXCITED to see real, true, positive beautiful Latin American representation in a Disney movie. I'm not even Colombian but seeing something like this become so popular made me so happy. Being able to fully understand "Dos Orugitas" in Spanish just hits so different, its not the same in English. It's such a beautiful step for Latin American representation, and I'm so excited to see what comes next for us. (Still holding out for my Latina Disney princess tho. And no, Elena doesn't count) I've also been told I look just like Mirabel and seeing a character that looks like me in a Disney movie just made my heart soar.
Luz Noceda (The Owl House)
Tumblr media
Bruh a bisexual Latina with mommy issues AND she's bilingual??? She's just like me fr.
Lance McClain (V*ltron Legendary Defender)
Tumblr media
He was my absolute favorite character in V*ltron and I will NEVER forgive them for ruining his arc and making him sad forever. He deserved a happy ending. He's NOT "just a boy from Cuba", he's so important and lovely.
Miles Morales (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse)
Tumblr media
I'm not a comic book reader, so Into the Spiderverse was the first time I met Miles. Finding out he was Afro Latino made me heart soar. He's a sweet boy, such a good character in the movie, and definitely deserved the Oscar. Can't wait for the sequel.
Claire Nuñez (Tales of Arcadia)
Tumblr media
Claire is literally such a badass. She's amazing, an amazing character, her story with Jim is beautiful. Love it when she's speaks Spanish. 10/10 character (Watch Tales of Arcadia it's really good)
Fenton Crackshell-Cabrera (Ducktales 2017)
Tumblr media
King of my heart. Wholesome dork. Voiced by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Gosalyn Mallard (Ducktales 2017)
Tumblr media
What I literal icon. I really really REALLY hope that the rumored Darkwing Duck reboot uses the DT 2017 versions of the DW characters cause this Gosalyn is a QUEEN
Hector Nieves Aka: Hi-Five (Glitch Techs)
Tumblr media
Glitch techs was such a cute show it deserved to keep running. Screw Nickelodeon for canceling it just as it was starting to get interesting. Anyway this dork is adorable. Bilingual gamer king.
Troy Sandoval (Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts)
Tumblr media
Hi this cutie patootie is a literal king. He and Benson are so cute together. (GO WATCH KIPO AND THE AGE OF WONDERBEASTS ON NETFLIX I PROMISE YOU'LL LOVE IT)
Honorable Mentions:
Tumblr media
(From top to bottom, left to right. Tumblr only allows 10 images at a time so I had to combine them)
• Señor Hueso and Capitan Piel, who together make the icon Don Suave (Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2018):
I literally laugh my ass off whenever I watch the episode "Hidden City Job" and they do the whole Don Suave bit. Like it's so over the top yet accurate to telenovela characters that I can't help but laugh every time. When they first introduced Capitan Piel, I instantly laughed so hard before they even translated it because they did the whole Skin and Bones bit and I just thought it was so clever. 10/10 duo I'd love to see more of them. (GO WATCH ROTTMNT PLEASE THEY NEED ALL THE SUPPORT THEY CAN GET IF THEY WANT A SEASON 3)
• Vaggie (Hazbin Hotel)
People were giving Vivziepop shit accusing her of making Vaggie the "angry Latina stereotype) and I couldn't disagree more. Vaggie is perfectly fine as a character, and I can't wait to see what they do with her in the official Hazbin Hotel series!!
• Isabella Garcia-Shapiro (Phineas and Ferb)
Phineas and Ferb was the first fandoms I was ever in, and Isabella holds such a special place in my heart. Love her to pieces
• Marco Diaz (Star vs. The Forces of Evil)
Svtfoe was also one of the first fandoms I was in, so seeing one of the leads be portrayed as Mexican made 12 year old me so happy.
• Miguel Rivera (Coco)
Coco is such a beautiful movie, and I ONLY watch it in Spanish. Miguel is such a sweet and special boy, he really brought the joy of music back into his family.
• Soos (Jesus) Alzamirano Ramirez
Gravity Falls was ALSO one of the first fandoms I was in (PnF, GF, and Svtfoe were my main 3 for a time), and finding out this loveable goof was Latino made me really happy
• Princess Elena Castillo Flores
Now she may not be an official Disney princess (she doesn't meet all the requirements to be part of the franchise) but that doesn't mean she isn't excellent representation for young children. Although the show doesn't represent one specific Latin American country/culture, the show does have bits and pieces of many different LatAm cultures, and even some indigenous inspiration here and there with all the mythology aspects. It isn't perfect, but I do still appreciate Elena's presence in Disney.
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month everyone!!!
