Spring Has Sprung Doll Photo Challenge Week 4: Pets
We live in San Diego county and have taken loads of trips to the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. I have always imagined Kira (aka Outback Julie) as a junior volunteer at the Safari Park. So, here she is helping a her koala friend find a suitable eucalyptus tree to much on at the park.
If you’ve never had a chance to visit, it’s a pretty amazing park that focuses on conservation and education.
TBH, the koalas are not actually at the Safari Park but I’m taking artistic liberties 🐨. You can learn more about their habitat at the SD Zoo here.
Kira’s Caramel Squares, from Sweet & Savory Treats. Pictured here is about half of the final product. The other half we froze for later. The easiest part was the shortbread base.
Despite spending hours in the fridge, the caramel didn’t completely set. The bars were a little messy to eat, but tasted very good.
Recently I learned that Kira is heavily inspired by Izzy Bee, a young Australian girl who works in koala rescue with her mother, a veterinarian. She has her own Netflix show, Izzy's Koala World.
Love to hate her, but she came through my thrift store today with her accessories (they’re in her backpack- not shown!!). When pricing expensive items, we divide the original price by three, so she’ll probably be around 32 dollars!! Such a steal, I couldn’t resist.
Kira’s Fruit & Cream Pavlova, from Sweet & Savory Treats. I was very excited about this recipe when the book came out. Pavlova is one of my favorite desserts but I don’t find it at a lot of restaurants.
I’ve worked with egg whites before so I didn’t have any trouble with the batter, but this was my first time baking a meringue. I think I got the taste and texture right, though shaping it proved to be a challenge. There was no way to make it as wide around as it called for while still shaping a well for the whipped cream.
Used raspberries and blueberries for the topping as they were fresh at the Farmer’s Market.
