And so, inevitably, I got around to making gijinkas of my original favorite Kirby characters! I was stuck on them for quite a while because I didn’t want to make them look too much like Magolor (my fault for giving him the head wings, I know) and I also didn’t want them to look too much like they do in canon because I think the fun of gijinka as a design exercise for me is adapting design elements into a new context, and also Elfilin doesn’t have any clothing or body details to work off of which made coming up with his outfit really hard, but I had the idea for the hair and liked it so much I just decided to run with completely human-looking designs for them. (The closest I have for an in-universe justification for this is like… maybe the Ancients were humans before they were catpeople - wait I still haven’t posted my Hyness gijinka - and Elfilis originally looked the same as in canon but changed to mimic them at some point for DNA acquisition and/or sympathy-garnering reasons. Idk it doesn’t really matter just really funny comparing them with Magolor lol)

Fun Fact! The double helix motifs in Elfilis’ spear and Forgo’s ear are left-handed (if you make a thumbs up with your left hand the stuff twists in the direction your fingers are curled as it moves the direction your thumb is pointing), which is the opposite chirality from the DNA in all known life (it’s right-handed). I’d be willing to bet that was on purpose to make them more alien. I went a little crazy with the left-handed double helixes in these designs; in fact, the positions of Elfilis/Forgo and Elfilin make a left-handed double helix through the whole post! Not even on purpose!

Anyway, had a lot of fun with these and wanna do more with them in the near future (now I can put Elfilin in cute clothes irl AND on my computer)

I have reached a conclusion on Kirby’s gender, and he’s both male and female. Not in the genderfluid sense, but the same sense as God (in the Abrahamic sense) where he encompasses both "male” and “female” (and presumably all other genders) at once

He has to be both male and female, because he’s present in both boy’s night and girl’s night images (and contrary to popular belief is NOT stupid). Also, in KatFL, which relishes in casually dropping that characters use they/them pronouns, Kirby is still using he/him pronouns.

Anyway, Kirby is a god. It’s never outright stated, but... Void, the main creator deity of the setting, is his foil. Plus, KatFL notes that wielding another deity’s power is easy for him.

About the Abrahamic God, He’s considered to transcend gender? Jewish interpretations in particular often use female pronouns when relating to feminine aspects of Her? I’m not terribly well-versed in Judaism but I know enough to be vaguely dangerous.

Hearing the sounds of their panicked screams was nothing more than a delight to her; knowing that under the innocent smiles and jokes with the group and her boyfriend unmasked a killer in deep waters.

“Hello, Ethan.” The dark voice rang out as the curly-headed boy held his phone up to his ear, looking frightened as his eyes darted around the vacant dorm, just arriving back from class the same night his friends had gotten attacked.

“H-hello?” He stuttered, the words barely able to come out of his throat, breathing hitched as he gripped onto the sheets of his bed comforter.

“Are you okay? You seem scared.” She had taunted, a chuckle erupting from her voice as the modulator made it sound more eerie than it should’ve been. But oh, to tease and to torment. Quinn was the more brutal one, while she liked to play with her food. 

It’s how Anika got to meet her fate.

Unsure of himself, Ethan slowly got up and made his way to his bedroom doorframe, “Who are you?” He questioned the dark, as he flipped on the hallway switch, “W-what do you want?”

“Call me a friend.” There was a pause before a rustling noise was heard from the closet door, “Someone to be there for you.” More taunting.

“I mean, you don���t want to die alone, do you?”

This instantly set the bar for Ethan, not taking a second glance at the closet door before bolting it to the exit.

Immediately she popped out of the closet, slamming into the awkward boy as she pressed him up against the wall, seeming to tease him with the knife as it was dragged down his torso.

The look on his face gave her nothing more than joy, as his labored breaths grew shorter and more fast-paced the longer the knife stayed on his body.

Albeit being built and tall, Ethan was perfect prey, like a deer in headlights; frozen. One look at him and you’d think he knew how to defend himself, but without any weapons available, he was defenseless.

After a few more minutes of reaping the fear out of the boy in front of her, she stabbed his shoulder and pushed him to the ground, kicking him in the back in the process. 

After he was down on the ground, she picked up a nearby vase and dropped it on top of his head, double-checking her own work to make sure he was fully unconscious.

This was finally getting fun.

MINORS DNI !!!

It's been two months, two months since I shot him, right in the chest. Two months since I shot him to death, he could've lived, I could've ran up to him and made him stop, but I didn't, I shot him, right in the fucking chest, the chest that I've buried my head up against, a chest that I've kissed, a chest that I've cried on.

It was all my fault too! I'm at fault! I would rather it had been me, but here's the thing, I know that if I hadn't shot him, Kirby would've. I'm so at fault for all of this shit, the tears, the blood, the cutting. It was a bullet right too the heart, it affected me so much, I've barely even left the house in these two months. 

I can't deal with this pain anymore, I mean, as much as He would want me too, I just can't. I've tried to go to therapy, but what would I say? 'Oh, I shot my boyfriend while he was in a Ghost face mask, trying to kill my best friends.'

The guilt has been consuming, waking up with a nightmare every night for the past two months. There usually the same. I'm in the wired warehouse with Ethan in my arms, screaming out his name and not in the way I did before I knew his last name wasn't even Landry.

I'm surprised I even made it out of there alive, I just wished he went out of there with me. I loved him, well, in-love with what he meant for me to see. The way he would play with my panties in the middle of class, the way he would grab my hair and kiss my neck. 

He would always cradle my cheek, he was very clingy. He was always holding my hand or touching some part of my body in some way. He was a lost puppy when he wasn't around me. Mindy found us a tiny bit gross. 

I go into my bathroom and strip the clothes of my body. I turn the tap on and put myself under the water. I run shampoo through my hair and this voice rings in my ear. "Forgetting about me already?" The voice sounds a lot like… "Ethan? How the hell can I hear you?" I mutter, I out conditioner in my hand and rub it through my hair.  "Remember when we fucked the time before I died and you were screaming out my name?" He asks and I shake my head. "Come on, you were so horny and you rode me so fast."

"I don-""Come on, lower that hand down there, I would be sad if you didnt." He whispers.  I trail my hand between my legs and put pressure on my clit. "Good girl."  I moan out as I rub my clit in circular movements.  "Ethan." I moan out lightly.

"Just remember that I love you." He says. I rub it faster and I realize that my own fingers won't be enough for me to ride my high. Then the thought comes in that I'm insane for thinking that he's talking to me. I turn off the tap and I wrap a towel around my body.  "Your not real, your not alive." I mutter to myself. I look into the mirror and see him standing behind me. I turnaround and see that no ones behind me. 

"I'm more real then what's his name?" He mutters. I shake my head. That was one of the one times that I left the house. Tara set me up with Jeremiah, a golden retriever type boy with blonde curly hair. I kissed him and he kissed me back and I moaned his name, not Jeremiahs, Ethans. "Jeremiah, that's right?"

"Go away." I mutter. I sigh loudly. "Don't lie, you loved thinking that it was me. Kissing him, grabbing his curly, blonde hair, but imagining they were mine. Imagine if he put his dick in? What if-""Shut up!!" I yell. I punch the mirror and it shatters. I scream, pull my hair and cry lightly.

I didn't need to see him in crazy dreams or if I'm going crazy, I still miss him every second of everyday. I get dressed and ready and call Sam

"Hey." "Hi." "How are you going at the moment?" "Uh, fine. Why are you calling me?" "Can I come over? I get you guys are going through stuff, but this is very important." I mutter and I hear her nodding. "Yeah….yeah, sure?" She sounds confused.  "Great! I'll be there in a bit." I say and I hang up.

 I get into my car and look in my side mirror. "Hey, Y/n, You can't get rid of me that easily." He smirks. His face was covered in blood this time and his chest had a bullet hole. I press harder on the gas and push the thought of him back in my mind. 

I arrive at Sam's apartment and knock at the door. Chad opens it and I raise my eyebrows.  "Hooking up with Tara?" I smirk. "No, Sam's in her room." Chad mutters. I pushed past him and walked into Sam's room.

"What's so important that you needed to see me?" She asks, I shake my head. "I'm seeing him." I say, closing the door and looking at my feet. "Who? Who are you dating? Look, I don't think this is that im-" "I'm seeing Ethan, not like in dating, I'm seeing him in mirrors and stuff." I interrupt her.

"That's been what has been happening to me…" She trails off and I sigh.  "I know, can you just give me some Meds, please." I plead. I look at her and she stands up, pulls open her drawers and get a prescription bottle. "Here you go, don't take more then five at a time." She says as she hands me the bottle. I take it off her and smile at her and leave. I take two and take a drink from my drink bottle.  "Two isn't enough to get rid of me, Y/n." Ethan smirks in my rear view mirror. I take two more and flush it down with another drink. 

I drive back to my own apartment and shake my head. I feel tried when I arrive and drag myself into the kitchen, I forget how many I've taken beforehand and take four, no more than five, and I've only taken one or two so that's just six. I take it down and grab some vodka and down it with that. I put the bottle away and drag myself into bed. I cover myself with the blankets and fall asleep. 

I wake up in a bed with the walls covered in blood and some of the blood was written into words that spelt out. 'Ethan's death was your fault.'. Ethan walks into the room and sits down on the bed.  "Hey." He smiles, he touches my cheek and I swear for a second, that it felt real and it was really happening. 

"Uh hey." I managed to get out. He caresses my cheek and places a kiss against my lips. I've forgotten what his lips taste like.  "How was your sleep, have you dreamt about me, bleeding out and how it was your fault." He asks. I gasp as blood crawls out of his mouth and eyes. 

I half scream and it comes out breathless and dry. I rush out of bed and but my back against the wall. I can't, what is going to happen out of this? I need to breathe. He follows after me and I try to scream as he gets closer. He keeps muttering the same words. "It will always be your fault."

I try to pull the door open and realized that there was blood covering them. I bang at the door and it doesn't make any noise, instead it shatters and I fall into the empty void of nothing.

I wake up in a hospital bed, my body stiff. I look around and Tara, Mindy and Chad are sitting down. "What's happening?"  I mutter out, looking at them. They all get up and look down at me. "You had an overdose. Sam only said for you to take only five." Tara shakes her head.  "You blacked out, Y/n. You were muttering things in your sleep." Mindy replies. 

"But I swear it was real." I mutter.  "What?" Chad asks. "The dream, Ethan, he was there! He kissed me!" I admit.

Hi :) I finally made my Magolor conspiracy theory board! I know the text is small so I’m gonna write out a transcription plus all the stuff I couldn’t fit without making everything completely illegible. Be warned, this is gonna get long.

By the way, please don’t take this overly seriously; I’m just shaking thoughts out of my head. I used to be all “yeah Magolor is exactly the type of character I would like but I’m just not that crazy about him.” But then the Epilogue came along and we had a blackout where I barely had internet access for a couple days and these two things combined flipped a switch in my brain and I thought about/talked about nothing but Magolor for literally a week straight. And so here we are!

First off, a note about the Another Dimenion creatures (Doomers, Darpas, Deppas, Dippas, and Dupas). In Japanese, Sphere Doomers are called Sphere Lowpers – Lowper being the romaji spelling used in the files, although in Japanese it’s pronounced Rōpā (ろーぱー), and most likely originating from the English words “interloper” and/or “robber”. B and p are closely related in Japanese writing, both being a slight alteration of the consonant h (via diacritic marks called tenten [two little lines] and maru [a circle]), so は is ha, ば is ba, and ぱ is pa.

The other creatures are variations on Rōpā with different vowels in the first syllable (they’re actually called morae [singular: mora] instead of syllables though): Rāpā, Rēpā, Rīpā, and Rūpā. These are changed in English to match the fact that Doomer starts with D: Darpas, Dippas, and Dupas, according to the Magolor Epilogue song titled “VS Darpa-Dippa-Dupas”, and then Deppa for Rēpā as a logical extrapolation of that.

(Side note: since this game came out before Kirby localization teams were given a lot of guidance, the names in other languages for Doomers are alllllll over the place in terms of meaning. Sphere Chimera, Sphere Spook, Spectre Sphere, and my favorite is the Italian, “Fenix Sferix”, meaning Phoenix Sphere. For their translation of “VS Darpa-Dippa-Dupas” they went with the same play on the vowels, so it’s “VS Fanix-Finix-Funix”. But then?? What are their Deppas called???? Probably Fonix but it’s still funny lol)

Now is probably a good time to talk about Magolor’s name; get all the translation fun facts out of the way. In Japanese, his name is Mahoroa (まほろあ). “Mahō” is the word “magic” in Japanese, so the English version starting with “Mago”, derived from “magic”, is a good close translation. “Lor” and “roa” are both their respective language’s name for the Lor Starcutter, and are roughly equivalent in Japanese pronunciation. The devs have said in a Miiverse post that Magolor’s name was also partially derived from the Japanese word “Mahoroba” (まほろば), which is the name for the concept of a “far-off land full of bliss and peace” (per the Wikipedia page for Mahoroba), which could certainly be translated as “paradise” (note on that in a second). With ba and pa being almost the same letter, it makes me wonder if Mahoroba and Rōpā (まほろば and ろーぱー) are meant to be so similar as a cheeky wordplay thing. Mostly because I think it would be really funny if that was the case.

The aforementioned note which is about the meaning of “Magolor” in the language the Jamba speak: there is a pause screen in Star Allies that lists a bunch of translations for words in their language, most notable here being “Mafo = lie” and “Lor = paradise”. “Mafo” having a different third letter than “Mago” is hardly an issue; fo and ho are written the same in Japanese unless you’re being really pedantic about loanword spelling (ホ vs フォ), “Maho” being equivalent to “Mago” is already established, and Star Allies had a notoriously messy localization anyways, so I would hardly be surprised if they just forgot to change it to “Mago”.

Also, given the fact that Return to Dreamland Deluxe added a line for 100%ing the game that clarifies that Mags was lying about being from Halcandra but studied Ancient culture there for years and that this whole post posits the theory that he was originally some sort of Another Dimension creature like the Doomers and co. (Side note: in the context of whatever possible relationship the Doomers and Ancients used to have [Rampaging Doomers are implied by Sphere Doomers EX pause screen lore to be ancient Doomers and have the gear aesthetic and that could mean any number of things], and the limited individuality of the Doomers/Darpa-Deppa-Dippa-Dupas and their subservience to Grand Doomer, I see this less as cultural appropriation and more like uhhhh trans coding, kinda. Please don’t come at me about this; I often joke that Kit, my nickname, is short for Catboy Discourse but I don’t actually want to fight on the internet about this catboy), the fact that this pause screen is for a version of Unhooded Hyness from the SAME UPDATE that added Magolor to the game is so hysterical. Maggie rocks up to a fight with someone he’s never heard of (Hyness claims in his rant that the Ancients erased his sect from their history after the schism), they reveal themself to be an actual Ancient, and the game itself calls him a liar???!? Like dude you had at least one other outfit you could’ve worn today lol

Anyways, I have some loose appearance similarities to point out between Magolor and the Doomers and co. His ears are shaped, striped (his hood is at least, though I know it’s more similar to Hyness’ ears), positioned, and even move similarly to the top two projectiles on a Deppa. The ears do have more jiggle physics now, unlike the Deppa projectiles, but they’re often portrayed as horns instead of ears in his boss forms (and concept art but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything for current Mags) anyways. Also, Dupas’ feet are a little strange. With the way that they move back and forth unrelated to how the Dupa actually moves and the way that they can stand upside down, it definitely could be that those appendages are disconnected similar to Magolor’s hands and the Dupas actually move by floating around. Admittedly they’re not the same color yellow and this one is a vague connection at best, though the Dupas are also slightly egg-shaped like Magolor. Oh, and in Magolor Epilogue his projectiles and the Rampaging Doomers’ projectiles look almost exactly the same to me. I could also point out the fact that Magolor’s 2nd phase/Soul form has a large mouth like the Doomers, Deppas, and Dupas, though it doesn’t look very similar. Girl what is that thing. Why do you look like W.D. Gaster.

A slightly stronger connection is the eyes. Flat yellow eyes (upright ovals with variations for expression in this case) aren’t that uncommon on Kirby creatures, but a lot of notable examples, such as Hyness, the other Jambas, and Wester, have their eyes on a black background, likely to symbolize shadowed, glowing eyes. In Hyness’ case at the very least, this is proven by his unhooded appearance. Magolor, on the other hand, has his on a brown background, which, as indicated by his visible ear in the Epilogue, is just his skin color. (Meta Knight is similar in this regard, but he has his own whole thing going on species-wise, and his eyes were white when not shadowed until like Brawl anyways which just supports my point.) It being a solid color, and comparatively a dull one at that, is dissimilar to the Doomers, though it makes sense with his design to not make it too busy. Also a couple of the Doomer types have different eye colors, but that’s also clearly for the purposes of making a good palette.

My favorite evidence, however, that links Magolor to the Doomers is his first phase boss theme, Welcome Your New Overlord (née Under My Control). I think it’s so similar to Another Dimension (the song that plays in the rift segments before each Doomer fight) and VS Sphere Doomer (context self-explanatory) that they were intentionally written in the same style. (Grand Doomer is also somewhat similar, but to a lesser extent in my opinion.) All these songs have synth chords through most (less in Grand Doomer) of them that, well. I didn’t take enough music theory to be able to identify chords more complex than triads, but I would describe them as “dissonant” or “jazzy”, and they step around to different keys relatively frequently (Oops, just realized I wrote “chord structure” instead of “chord progression” on the board, oh well. It’s probably non-functional harmony anyway but either way, I just meant this). They also have very similar rhythms, playing the same chords multiple times in a row, often falling on offbeats (again, Grand Doomer is the outlier here). Pre-final boss themes in Kirby are often written to be complex and disorienting, but the way that these songs are similar is specific enough that I think it’s reasonable to assume it was on purpose. Also can I just say how much I love Welcome Your New Overlord? Amazing song.

Overall, the trick to all Kirby lore is trying to judge whether things are done by the developers for the purposes of gameplay and game experience or for the purposes of canon lore, and I’m not gonna make a judgement call on this one, but I really like it as a headcanon at the very least. A couple more related headcanons about Magolor for reading this far: Not sure whether I think that Mags named the Lor after himself or himself after the Lor, but I think for the “Mago” part, he either named himself after the Ancient word for “lie” on purpose as an inside joke for only himself (not knowing the Jamba were still around to call him on it) or he named himself after the Ancient word for “magic” and it just so happens to be either a homonym or synonym for the word “lie”, possibly because of negative opinions toward the Jamba. Possibly both options, even. Also I think the reason he talks Like That, at least in English (in Japanese he just uses katakana instead of hiragana a lot, which, katakana is usually used for foreign words so it gives a “foreigner” feeling), is because he’s a very studious and book-smart foreign language learner, but unfortunately the first native speaker of Kirby’s language he met was Marx (there’s a well established fan theory that he has met Marx before based on his dialogue that he knows someone who knows Kirby) and he internalized entirely too many of his speech patterns. On purpose. Mini speech headcanons: At Merry Magoland he either addresses to the patrons as “parkgoers”, “paying customers” (he doesn’t charge admission but he got used to saying it at the Shoppe and thought it would be funny to continue saying it in an inappropriate situation; it does make some people freak out thinking they were supposed to buy a ticket), or “gamers”. Also during the beginning of Return to Dream Land he laid the flattery on a bit thick with calling the main group “kind strangers” and “my saviors” and he still calls them that sometimes after they’re friends for real just to be annoying.

tbh with kirby novels i think my personal breaking point was the samurai kirby one, which is also the most recent atm.

it's not translated yet but i know all of the plot details thanks to a good friend who actually knows a bit of japanese. and let's just say i'm very underwhelmed, even though i really should have seen this coming.

gonna hide the rest of the post because there will be spoilers about the novel as well as a bit of ranting about that specific book and kirby light novels as a whole that id imagine not everyone wants to see.

it's all the same trappings mie takase had for the past decade of doing these books repackaged under the new, admittedly flashy, coat of paint.

magolor, of course, is the main antagonist, again.

the main crux of the book is him manipulating everybody to meet his own ends, AGAIN. he even offers kirby to rule the world together or something, AGAIN. takase, you literally used this plot device last year in rtdl novelization, this is embarrassing.

once again we have an awfully boring original side-villain i don't remember the name or design of because has nothing cool or unique going for him. he's not even the true main villain as per usual with magolor stealing spotlight from him in the last second which is just, lol.

once again we have meta knight hogging the most attention in the book by having the most elaborate and "cool" side-plot yet ultimately it has no satisfying pay-off as meta is pretty useless in this book. he doesn't get to help kirby in the climax and the exposition dump he gives out kirby could've been just as well done by elfilin, really.

dedede is once again written as a rude brute that has terrible judge of character that can't seem to ever make the right choices or to even listen to his subordinates that have a leek of common sense. i genuinely don't know how are we supposed to root for this guy, once again, he's this frustrating to follow. only compelling piece of writing he got in this book is him being shocked that he has to capture kirby, hinting at his fondness for the guy, but that's about it.

elfilin and beast pack are sure there! leon sure can speak the same language as everyone else even if the rest of the beast pack still can't, even if this makes no sense here since the only reason he could speak is because of id-f86's mind control and possession.

their inclusion intrigued me at first but the way they were utilized ultimately went nowhere. and i can't say i enjoy the fact that elfilin is being paired with the beast pack as his "found family", when his dynamic with kirby and bandana dee is way more compelling.

so yeah, cool sounding book on paper, but execution is extremely frustrating and underwhelming. if mie takase managed to mess up this awesome concept for a book, even when literally everything was in it's favor of turning out to be one of the series stand-outs, then i literally have no faith in anything else coming next.

magoland novel i think will be the breaking point for most people, since it's announcement became pretty contentious even in japanese fanbase and those guys are usually pretty chill about everything kirby-related from my understanding. things are not looking good for fanbase reception of the novels i think.

i don't know how many people share my view, maybe i'm in minority, but personally i'm kind of tired of putting up with mie takase's frustrating tendency to stick to the same tired tropes she used way too many times at this point instead of attempting something genuinely fresh and new with this world and characters.
