When hanging out with the whole friend group, his eyes always drift towards you unconsciously. « I wanna see your abs. » you explained. « I… sure, babe, but you see them all the time with my hero costume ? » he started taking off his shirt, a bit confused. « It’s because I wanna know how it feels. I always feel them when we hug and stuff but I wanna get a precise feeling. » you explained.

He grinned, making his pecs move to impress you. « You could have told me you just wanted to get closer to me. » he said, all happy to see you tilt your head at his pecs moving. He opened his arms, allowing you to touch wherever you wanted.

« Oh wow ! You really feel how they stand out- » you said as you ran your fingers on his abs, making him giggle. « Yeah ! You thought it would be molded into my body ? » he kept giggling. « Kinda ! I’m not muscular like that ! »

« That’s a lot of words just to say you want to see me naked. » he only replied, putting his pen down. You gasped amused at the accusation. « Not even ! I’m just curious ! » you said, and he complied. He started to take off his pullover. « You better not eye-rape me ! » he said, noticing that you were looking already.

« Of course not ! » you said, as his torso was now fully exposed in front of you. He indeed got some muscles going on ! You were surprised since he was the type of guy to actually wear clothes that weren’t tight -one of the only ones in the hero branch- but hey, he had to have some muscles to fight !

« See ?! You’re making it weird ! » he yelled, picking his pullover up. « I’m not ! I’m just looking ! I can’t look ?! » he scoffed. « If you stare, I wanna stare too…. » You giggled, showing more of your arms. « See ? I’m quite muscular too. » you said, sticking your tongue out.

Shoto Todoroki

You were actually training together, but as he was trying new techniques, Shoto was only wearing tank tops and had taken off the top of the sports uniform. This got you curious, but you were obviously not going to say anything until you were both hanging out in his dorm room.

« Hey, I have a weird question but I don’t know if it will make you uncomfortable. » you started. « How so, love ? Go ahead ? » he reassured you. « I never get to really see your muscles up close and since I’m not muscular like that… I kinda wanna know how it feels… » you explained.

Bakugou

He was always too busy for the smallest of things.

He was too busy to set up a date night.

He was always too busy.

He had no problem doing the interviews he hated but he had an issue if you asked him to go to bed with you if you wanted some affection.

Your relationship was wilting away right under him and he seemed to not care.

You checked out of it already. You were ready for him to end things soon since he didn't bother to get you a present for Christmas and he didn't even come home for the holiday either.

He didn't even bother to open them once he got home and instead went to his office to finish up some reports.

You thought that maybe he would try to put in an effort for New Year's.

His agency always hosts a party for the sidekicks and you, delusionally, thought he would take you.

He left you behind at home to greet the new year.

You called him.

He surprised you when he picked up. In the background, you could hear his friends talking.

Maybe once upon a time, it would hurt that he was prioritizing his friends but you were numb. It no longer mattered.

"What do you need Y/n?" He was annoyed. Maybe it was at you. Maybe it was because of how loud his friends were being. Kirishima could be heard in the background talking about some trip he had planned for after New Year's.

You dont remember the last time he ever took you on a vacation.

"I'm breaking up with you. I'll be out by tonight." You're to the point. There was no reason for you to prolong it.

He fell out of love and you were done with being in love with someone who didn't see you as worth spending his time on.

"W-what?! What are you talking about?"

"Bye Bakugou." You ended the call and began packing.

Your phone kept ringing as you packet. You turned it off after the 5th call.

You had an apartment already. You had it just in case you ended the relationship earlier.

You welcomed the new year alone and walking down the busy and joy-filled streets of Japan, bags in hand and phone turned off.

Shinso

He was so sweet when you both started dating.

He was attentive and patient with you. Never did he raise his voice even when you were in the wrong.

He coddled you and that was something you didn't mind too much as your relationship progressed.

It felt nice to be wanted and to be looked after but it began to change as you both got older and entered your respective careers.

He started snapping at you.

He was angry. He reminded you of Bakugou but he lacked the ego.

The once loving and comforting Shinso was now a brut who came home to get upset with you.

He yelled, he cried. He was frustrated beyond belief. He repeated as much to you.

"You wouldn't understand just how hard my job is." doesn't matter if you worked the same job or not, he always made you feel like you were not as hard-working or as overworked as him.

For the holidays he didn't bother to put on a happy face when you visited your family. He started arguing that you should have gone to his family for the holidays.

For New Years you had hoped he would've appreciated the reservation you made at his favorite restaurant.

You dressed up and made sure to make yourself look and feel good. You liked having an excuse to dress up, try something new, and see what might make him happy.

You both agreed to meet at the restaurant since he was out working.

And when you got there he was in his hero uniform instead of the suit he had said he was going to change into at the agency he worked at.

He was sweaty and dirty, and his hair had stuck to his forehead.

"Shinso, you said that-" You were cut off as he slammed his hand against the table, the drinks that had been set spilling onto the table and onto the floor.

"For fuck sake, Y/n. I just got off of work. Can I please relax?" He snapped at you.

You started the New Year crying. He kept muttering to himself about how upsetting it was that he couldn't eat in peace.

Monoma

He was gentlemanly with you. Always opening the door for you, taking his jacket/hoodie/coat off so you could wear it even if it means that he'd be cold.

He was always attentive even if he was self-centered at times.

As he entered his career he was bombarded with work all at once. He never had a moment for you and when he got home he would say he was tired.

You thought that maybe for the Holidays he would get a break but that wasn’t the case. He was working late, barely answering his phone and sleeping at the agency just so he could finish paperwork.

He told you that he would take you to the agency’s New Year’s party.

You were enjoying the music and the drinks, speaking to his friends and your friends when you realized he wasn’t by your side anymore.

You looked for him and in a hallway you found him kissing with someone who you knew to be a sidekick.

“Monoma” You didn’t know what to say or do. He jumped and pushed the sidekick away before trying to get close to you.

“Y/n! W-Wait! Let me explain. This is all a big misunderstanding!” He tried explaining but you were already walking away. He went back to the party and couldn’t find you anywhere.

No one knew where you were and he couldn’t get a hold of you. He started panicking thinking that you might have gotten hurt or worse.

Kirishima

Kirishima didn’t know when to quit and that was the reason why you loved him so much.

He was always trying to push himself to do things that he might fear for the sake of someone else.

He was scared to ask you out and when he managed to get the word with he couldn’t help let out a cheer when you accepted to date him.

Once he started his pro-hero career it took a lot out of him. Physically and mentally.

He was constantly getting injured and every time you had come to the hospital not knowing how or why he got hurt.

There were times when he nearly died and it left you distraught. You never knew when it would be the last time you’d see him.

And he refused to tell you what he was doing or how hurt he was.

New Year's was no different.

He was hurt and bleeding out after fighting a villain. He was rushed to the hospital and when you arrived to check up on him he snapped at you when you began asking him what happened.

You had spent so long telling him that you wanted him to stop taking so many risks. His health and life were on the line and he truly didn’t need to be making brash decisions.

"Y/n, if I don't do this who will?" He was frustrated and you understood that but you also dreaded someday not having the chance to see him again.

"Eijiro, please-"

"Y/n, stop. Just please stop." He doesn't want to hear you complain and he asks you to leave.

He hears the fireworks outside his hospital room.

Aizawa

He's always stressed out and that's how you met him.

He was feeding strays on his patrol and he saw you doing the same.

You started dating and it didn't bother you at all that he was absent often since he worked at UA and as an underground hero.

He made an effort to be there for the holidays but even if he couldn't be there he would make sure to tell you in advance.

The only issue with this was that he prioritized work and solitude more than being around people.

You could understand that he wanted to have his breaks in peace but it also meant that he would push you away.

It started bothering you after a while. You told him that you'd like to spend more time with him and he agreed that he could try but nothing changed.

UA decided to host a New Year's party for the teachers and students.

Aizawa went, not bothering to tell you, and when you tried getting a hold of him he didn't answer his phone.

You got into an argument when he came back.

"Why didn't you tell me you were going to the party? I could have joined you." You felt hurt.

"I only went to keep the peace. Hizashi made me go."

"And you could have brought me so I could meet your coworkers."

He went to bed leaving you to sleep on the couch as you watched the news broadcasters celebrate the new year.

He played the role of an attentive boyfriend well.

He felt something for you, he knew it was something positive but he didn't know if he could define it as love.

He was always good at pretending so it didn't hurt to try and be your boyfriend.

It was a new relationship and he liked the affection he got from you. it was nice.

He felt appreciated in a way he hadn't been before.

Your touch, your kisses, your hugs. It was warm and inviting.

It all came crashing during the New Year party the hero commissioned hosted for all ranked heroes.

He was getting pictures with fans, talking with possible investors for his agency, talking with heroes, and all while ignoring you.

You understood he had his priorities on his agency but ever since you two started dating, it felt like he wasn't really invested in the relationship. Like something was missing from it.

When the countdown began, you tried getting him to join you out on the balcony. You wanted to greet the new year with him but he wouldn't budge.

"Give me a second." He said before making his way over to Endeavor and Jeanist.

The clock hit midnight and everyone cheered as they congratulated each other.

Hawks didn't go back to you at all. You left the party without telling him anything and just went back to your apartment.

He didn't notice you were gone until they started clearing the space and the cleaning crew started cleaning up.

He looked for you and when he couldn't find you he tried calling.

_ "Yeah but, what's the occasion?" you were practically able to see the wheels turning in his head as he tried to remember what he could have missed.

Was it his birthday? Valentine's day? Your anniversary? No, it was none of them.

_ "There is this cute little flower shop on my way home, and it sells the most beautiful roses so I wanted to surprise you with this." you seemed incredibly bashful as your head hung low, wondering if he actually hated them, or if he would give you one of his usual snarky remarks.

Your self confidence dropped to the ground in an instant, and you seriously considered playing it off as a joke, however..

_ "You're really cute you know that?" did he really mean those words?

He held the bouquet in one hand and used the other to gently lift your chin up and place a soft peck on your flushed cheek, "I love them, thank you so much beautiful," he murmured faintly, lips gliding along your skin until they reached your smiling ones, "kiss," was his sole warning to you, before stealing your breath away with a deep passionate liplock.

Shouto :

All he wanted at that moment was to kiss you, to feel your warmth against himself, -and so he did- leaning in slowly to capture your anticipating lips.

It was soft, almost as soft as the delicate petals of those beautiful roses you brought for him, and you got lost in it at once.. lost in him.

_ "I'm so happy you liked them Shouto," you breathed out shakily before kissing him again, a gentle peck on the tip of his nose, bringing out that adorable chuckle you loved so much.

You reread his text and sighed in despair as you gazed at the beautiful roses you picked out for him. He's been working long hours lately and it's been affecting him greatly, but even in the midst of it all, he still made sure to call and text you throughout the day to make sure you're doing well.

You wanted to do something nice for him, to try and alleviate the stress he must be feeling lately which is why you purchased that beautiful bouquet as you wished to see that bright smile on his face while presenting it to him, "I have to see him now." you were determined, and couldn't possibly wait until he comes home, so you decided to surprise him instead.

You drove back to his agency, accompanied by a warm meal that you made in a jiffy, in addition to your special little gift..

_ "What.. of course I love them! They're beautiful! I just can't believe you thought of me that much.." he looked adorable as he attempted to hide his face behind the bouquet.

You took a step closer and tried to move the roses -separating you from each other- away, so you could look at him clearly.

You were tempted to fluster him a bit more, as you placed a small peck on his quivering jaw, and another on his heated cheek, "I just wanted to see this cute look on your face Izuku." you murmured faintly, lips caressing his skin and ghosting over his own.

_ "That's mean. Still, I love your gift and I'm about to show you just how grateful I am." and with that, his cute bashful demeanor was instantly replaced with a primal desire that sent blissful goosebumps all over your body.

Hitoshi :

_ "Hitoshi! Are you home?" you called out for your boyfriend as soon as you stepped into your apartment, hoping he would show up and tell you that he's been waiting for you.

And he did, emerging from the bathroom all wet and steamy, wearing nothing but a towel that hung low around his waist. And for a moment you forgot how to speak as your eyes studied his flexing muscles.

_ "Welcome home babe! Oh, what's that you're holding?" he approached you casually, unaware of the indecent thoughts dancing in your head, but you somehow snapped back to your senses and replied quickly.

_ "These are for you, no particular reason I just wanted to get you something pretty." your eyes were locked on the delicate roses as you did not trust the blush threatening to creep up your face.

_ "Something pretty huh? Well I already have you," he spoke suggestively, placing an arm around your waist and pulling you flush against him, forcing the bouquet to squish between your bodies.

_ "Hitoshi, stop it." you meant to scold him for paying little attention to the roses you picked so carefully for him, but your words came out in a little whine that amused the man in front of you.

_ "I'm sorry, but you're so fun to tease," his chuckles were muffled against your forehead as he kissed you gently before moving back to gaze into your eyes, "I really love them sweetheart, you never cease to surprise me."

Shigaraki :

You tiptoed your way out of his room after leaving something unexpected on his bed, you didn't know how he would react to your gift, and didn't dare hand it to him personally so you left it in his room secretly when he wasn't looking.

_ "Y/n, what are you doing here? Were you looking for me?" his voice startled you but you faked nonchalance as you giggled nervously.

_ "Yeah I was.. but it's nothing! I'll see you later." you tried to flee the scene but he was a lot faster than you were, grasping your arm and pinning you in place.

_ "What's the matter y/n? Is everything okay?" he studied your face and awaited a response that never came, "alright come with me."

He dragged you along into his room and closed the door behind you two, and before he could turn around to face you, something strange caught his attention.

_ "Are those.. roses?" he was confused for a moment, brows knitted as he tried to comprehend, until finally everything started making sense in his head, "oh, so that's why you were acting weird huh?"

You gritted your teeth and braced yourself for a scolding or a mockery, but what came instead left you wide eyed and speechless.

_ "They smell really good, I like them." he declared with a smile, holding the colorful blooms in his arms.

You were still quiet, wondering if that wasn't just a figment of your imagination, until you felt his rough palm caressing your cheek, "thank you darling, they're beautiful."

Amajiki :

You giggled softly, leaning against the doorframe and watching him sleep peacefully.

It has been hectic for him lately, with more night shifts added to his already cramped schedule, leaving him with minimal time to relax and even lesser to be with you.

You missed each other too much that even the regular phone calls were no longer enough for either of you, but today was a rare day off for him, one that you decided to take full advantage of.

_ "Tamaki, can you hear me sweetheart?" you felt a little bad for interrupting his well needed shut eye, but you honestly wanted to see and talk to him.

He groaned against his pillow, still unaware of your presence, until you sat down by his side and caressed his bare shoulder.

_ "Tamaki, can you open your eyes for a moment baby?" you whispered your plea and leaned in to kiss his warm skin.

_ "Y/n, hi sweetie.." he slurred a reply while rubbing the sleep from his eyes and blinking repeatedly until you came into focus.

He looked so cute that you couldn't help kissing his pouty lips, "I'm sorry for waking you Tamaki but I promise this won't take long, I just want to give you something and I couldn't wait until later."

_ "What.. yes of course, what is it?" he sat up -still a bit confused- but something in your lap caught his attention, it was a gorgeous bouquet you specifically went out earlier to buy.

_ "This is for you, I hope you like it," you averted your gaze and bit down on your lip nervously, "you have been down lately because of work so I wanted to make you.. smile."

You felt his hand on yours, squeezing lightly, "you did this for me?" and it was barely above a whisper.

You nodded slowly, finally turning around to face him, and placed the beautiful blossoms on the nightstand next to him before standing back up and preparing to leave, "that was all, you can go back to sleep now and I'll wake you up when dinner is ready."

_ "Don't go!" he grabbed your arm and pulled you down again, "stay with me, and don't worry about food, we'll order something later."

You couldn't say 'no' to him, not when he was looking at you with those big hopeful eyes.

You slipped underneath the covers with him, burying your face in the crook of his neck and relaxing in his hold.

_ "Thank you they're beautiful, just like you."

Dabi :

_ "What part of me makes you think that I'm a flower boy?" he looked unimpressed, crossing his arms over his chest as he spoke.

You knew he would react in that exact same way when you decided to buy him roses on your way to see him, so why were you hurt by his words then?

_ "Yeah I know, sorry.. you can throw them away or burn them or whatever." you placed the bouquet on his couch and took a deep breath as you tried to ignore the sharp sting in your heart.

He was right though, roses? For him? The more you thought about it the dumber you felt, so honestly, you were the one to blame..

_ "I'm sorry Touya, let's forget about this," you feigned a smile as you approached him again, "so how was your day? Anything interesting?" you were on the verge of tears as you desperately tried to change the subject, but he saw right through you.

His eyes moved between your pained expression and the forgotten roses that he finally decided to pick up, "these aren't that bad I guess." in reality, he hated them, he hated how disgustingly bright and delicate they were, but what he hated the most was being the reason of your dejection, so if accepting them would bring back your smile, then so be it.

You were so easy to read, so simple to fool and for some reason, the twinkle illuminating your eyes, and the smile reappearing on your face after hearing his words, warmed his heart and relieved him.

So maybe you weren't the only fool there, maybe he was one too, a fool for you.

Monoma :

_ "Oh, these are for me?" he expressed smugly while that usual annoying smirk -that you loved so much- was plastered across his face, "well I guess I deserve them right?" and there it was, that obnoxious laugh again.

_ "Come on don't be a jerk, I knew this was a bad idea," you shook your head and crossed your arms over your chest as you started regretting what you've done, "everyone said I could do better, but I picked you instead." you tried as much as you could to keep a straight face and stifle your laughter.

_ "Of course you did gorgeous, I'm the best of them."

He's a conceited self-centered asshole, so bringing him a gift with no particular occasion would only boost his arrogance. You knew that, but you still wanted to do something nice for him because even a jerk like him still made you happy, he's the love of your life after all.

_ "Yeah yeah I get it." you still feigned annoyance, but deep down you were actually amused.

_ "I'm sorry sweetheart, come here," his chuckles resumed as he dragged you close, nuzzling your neck and breathing in your scent, "hmm.. sweet," his lips lingered there, right above your pulse, and his free arm pulled you even closer to his chest while the other one held the bouquet, "they're beautiful and I love them, thank you love." and that was a rare moment of humbleness that he only dares to show you because you're the one who owns his heart.

Denki :

_ "Yes! Die you bastard! If you think you've got a chance against Chargebolt then you're clearly dreaming!" his loud shouts reached the outside of your shared apartment where you stood, and you let out a knowing chuckle before opening the front door and walking in.

Your days off are usually lazy, warm and cozy, and it's a nice change of pace from your usual stressful lives as pro heroes, which is why you two prefer to spend that precious free time doing typical ordinary things.

_ "I'm back honey!" you called out for him as you placed your shopping bags at the entrance, except for one thing that you kept holding in your arms.

He clearly couldn't hear you due to all of the infernal shooting and explosions coming from the game he was focused on, so you called again and this time it worked.

_ "Oh! Y/n you're back sweetheart!" he seemed like a little puppy who's excited for his owner's return, throwing his game console away and running up to you, "did you have a good time with the girls? I missed you so much! You were gone for so long!" yes, a little puppy.

He was so happy to see you that he failed to notice the colourful roses you held in your arms, until you pushed the fragrant blooms to his chest with a smile, "I'm sorry for being late, here is an apology gift." it was merely an excuse so you would see that sparkle in his eyes.

_ "These are amazing!" he took them off your hands, peppering your cheeks, nose and forehead with sweet little kisses, "you're the best y/n," was what he whispered to you before finally connecting your lips.

On your way home from work you stumble across a damp cardboard box with the label FOR PICKUP, DESTROY written in big red letters on the front. Overcome with curiosity you open it to find it full of handbells of various shapes, sizes, and metal compositions. You can’t figure out why someone would want these destroyed, but whoever was meant to do so will undoubtedly be here soon. It’d be a shame to see them all go to waste, surely they won’t miss just one bell…

Chapter One: An Interesting Find

Work had killed the optimistic spirit you’d started the day with, as it so often did. Your hopes of getting off early were dashed almost as soon as you walked in the door and caught sight of everything you needed to get done that day. You knew you’d be stuck walking home at night, too exhausted to do anything but heat up some leftovers and crash for the night.

‘Must be a day that ends in y,’ You thought bitterly to yourself.

As predicted you ended up missing the last bus and had to walk home, construction on your regular route forcing you to take the long way around. You were confident in the safety of your neighborhood so you weren’t too worried about being jumped, whether or not your body would hold up long enough for you to even get home was your main concern.

The silver lining to the late night walk was that the rain had finally let up. It’d been storming nearly all day, rain lashing the windows your small cubicle was pressed up against. More than once you found your concentration slipping from your tasks and latching onto the storm outside. If you focused hard enough you thought you could make out shapes dancing through the violent downpour. Sometimes the shapes even made sense.

It was a relief to nearly be home, and as you rounded the corner onto your street something small caught your attention out of the side of your eye. A small cardboard box, dampened and misshapen by the rain. Drawing closer to it you were able to make out the words scrawled in big red messy marker on the side:

FOR PICKUP, DESTROY.

Curiosity overcame you and against your better judgment you bent down to examine the parcel. It was surprisingly sturdy for having been out in the rain for what you assumed was awhile. It smelt musty, like wet dog and old paper mache and was just as damp to the touch as you would have expected. You pulled the four flaps of the box away and peered inside.

You weren’t sure what you were expecting the box to contain, but a cluster of handbells of various shapes and sizes was certainly not it. Baffled you reached down and lifted a bell to your face, examining it closely before picking up another and doing the same. Not only were they different shapes and sizes, they all had different patterns engraved on them and seemed to be made of different metals.

You pulled the bells out of the box one by one and set them down on the sidewalk in front of you, examining them in reference to one another. There were fourteen bells in total, each with a differently colored ribbon attached where the bell met the handle. In addition to this, each bell had a small paper identification card attached to its base as well. Curiously, none of the cards seemed to be wet.

You picked up a bell at random and looked it over. It was a heavy iron handbell, with jagged pink lines engraved deep into the rough metal. It seemed to glow slightly, and was not the only one to do so. It pulsed with an inexplicable bright green energy whose temperature you could not discern. The bow was dark green and the label attached read: The Stalker.

The second was a brass handbell with large black X's scorched into the metal. The bell itself was slightly hot to the touch and adorned at the bottom with a small orange zig zag pattern. The bow was similarly orange and the label read: The Tyrannical.

You caught on to the naming convention as you moved on to the third bell. It was made of a beautiful and solid silver but had been crudely splashed with paint, white on the left side and bright red on the right. Strangely, each side was different in temperature but the bell didn’t seem to have any way to make the metal react this way. There were no engravings on this bell. The bow was similar in color, half red and half white and the label read: The Voyeur.

The fourth bell was heaviest of all, a rough and jagged hunk of bronze that could hardly even be categorized as an instrument anymore. It jutted out and divided at odd, random angles, almost as if it were trying to mimic a mound of harsh weather-worn boulders. Though battered it didn’t seem any weaker for it, in fact the metal of this bell was the thickest out of all of them. The bow was bright red, save for the ends that ombre-ed to black. The label attached read: The Enduring.

The fifth bell was bright and made of aluminum, it was engraved with a shock of bright yellow electricity that arched across the entire surface of the instrument. It vibrated with energy in your hand and you could hear a low buzzing and crackling noise when you brought it close to your ear. The bow was yellow with a black lightning bolt sewn into it, and the label read: The Volatile.

You picked up the five handbells and placed them gently back into the box before moving on to the sixth bell. It was a metal of the deepest blue you’d ever seen, and a cursory google search told you the closest metal to this description was Niobium. It was smooth to the touch and lacked any adornments. It held a type of regal energy, as though carving anything into it was a crime too great to even consider. The deep purple bow was similarly soft and the label attached read: The Compelling.

The seventh bell was a deep gray color, you mistook it for silver at first but checking google again told you it was more than likely a metal called tantalum. It was the most normal looking of the lot, save for a small pink bird engraved near the handle. The bow itself was gray and the label read: The Sly.

The eighth was another aluminum bell, similarly light but with nothing engraved in it. You went to place it down when you noticed something strange. Where before its surface was smooth and featureless, the metal began to warp as soon as you touched another bell, the image of the second instrument appearing seemingly from nowhere. It did this with each bell you lifted in turn and even changed to mimic the pattern on your phone case when you went to record a video. The bow was black with sky blue dots and the label, appropriately, read: The Mimic.

The ninth was a titanium bell, a fact you could tell immediately upon seeing the light reflected off its metal surface. Its deep blue bounced vibrant shades of red, purple, yellow, and green off it, colors dancing and mixing on its face as you gently rolled it in the palm of your hand. The deep indigo bow was situated nicely over its small label, which read: The Metamorphosing.

The tenth bell was the second bronze one of the bunch, where the first had been heavy and jagged, this one was light and smooth. Its metal was polished and it looked surprisingly well maintained. It had bright red feathers engraved in a pattern at the bottom that looked as though they’d recently received a new coat of paint. The bow was an equally bright shade of red and the label just beneath it read: The Swift.

Picking up the second five handbells you gingerly placed them back into the box before moving on to the eleventh bell. It was the second silver one, or at least you assumed it was. It was burnt nearly beyond recognition and you weren’t positive it could even ring anymore. This one seemed to have words engraved on it, a proper cleaning might make them legible. The bow was bright blue and the label attached read: The Vengeful.

The twelfth bell was again, iron. It was equally as heavy as the first but not nearly as smooth, in fact its surface was gritty and as you lifted it up a chunk broke off the bottom. It was dust before it reached the ground. This bell was obviously on its last legs and there was no way it was functional anymore. You read the label anyway, placed neatly underneath the snow-white bow it read: The Decaying.

The second to last bell was the beautiful blue metal niobium, again with no engravings. It was nearly identical to the first, save for the bow. Interestingly, this was the only bell that didn’t come with a carefully tied ribbon, instead it had a thin piece of white cloth haphazardly wrapped around the base of the handle. Bunched up and dirty it covered the small label that read: The Hunter.

The last bell you mistook to be the third silver instrument of the bunch. You were partly right, but in addition to the small label underneath the pale blue bow reading The Vaporous there was a second smaller label which read: Nickel-Silver. You assumed this to be its composition as it was a slightly darker gray color than the previous two. The lines dancing up and down its surface seemed meaningless at first, but upon closer inspection you could see they were trying to imitate thick cumulus clouds.

You placed the last four bells back into the box but paused just before you closed the parcel. It was such a strange thing you stumbled upon here today, not significant in a life-changing way but just interesting enough to recount to a friend or ponder over at night. Life was so monotonous these days, it was nice to have something to shake up the repetitive cycle of work and sleep.

You gazed back down into the box, where each bell sat unassuming and inconsequential. Whoever was meant to pick these up would surely not miss a single bell, would they? It would mean so much more to you as a souvenir of this strange little encounter you found yourself in, wouldn’t it? Surely it couldn’t hurt to just take one…
