I actually enjoyed rewatching AOS. But I have to say, the way, Spock and Uhura's relationship is portrayed there feels not only unsatisfying, but actually toxic. I have no idea, how can someone possibly see it as a step forward in portraying female characters. It's totally misogynistic. What do we see? We see, that his universe evolves around his best friend: as we can see in STID, he is obsessed with Kirk. Jim is the only being, that's able to actually not even make Spock feel, but also express his emotions. When his girlfriend's life is threatened, he is cool and calm, explaining to Jim how her sacrifice is "their only logical option". When Jim's about to risk his life to save the entire ship... Spock's reaction is... well... different (to put it mildly). When he bumps into his girlfriend on his way to the engineering, he doesn't even stop to acknowledge that she is alive: just dashing right past her, as if she is an empty space. Not mentioning the reactor scene and what happens next. In Beyond the relationship continues to deteriorate: he breaks up with her and leaves her for making Vulcan babies with someone else. But as soon as his friend "snaps his fingers" and tells him, that he needs him, - he is back: all endangered species baby-making and plans of continuing Ambassador Spock's work on New Vulcan are forgotten immediately, all napoleonic plans - "out of the window". And she supposed to carry on with their relationship after that as if nothing happened? But at the end she nevertheless is smiling and wearing his pendant. We don't know, if they will get back together, but even a possibility of returning to someone, who treated you like that, feels creepy. What kind of message is that? That you got to stick to your partner under any circumstances, no matter how he treats you? Does she have self-respect issues? If, as we continuously observed, Jim is a "number one" person to Spock, then where is Uhura's place in his life? The fact, that he gave her this pendant only underlines the awkwardness of the whole affair: it's like he is trying to compensate for his lack of feelings with a jewelry. And that's super-creepy and wrong. Jewelry can be indeed a lovely gesture, but only if it comes together with the feelings: not instead of them.

tbh though if i were mccoy i’d be pretty fucking fed up with spock too. imagine you’re a doctor, you dedicate your life to learning how care for hundreds of different life forms and species across the galaxy, and then your wife divorces you, which leads you to enlisting as a doctor for starfleet. this is WAY outside of your comfort zone, you hate adventure and you’d rather be sittin on a porch in the sun with some sweet tea in hand and your daughter on your knee, but you ain’t got nowhere else to go, and who are you if you aren’t a doctor? you’ve dedicated your whole life and so much more to healing. so you enlist, you get assigned to a starship. not your dream job, but if there’s one thing leonard mccoy knows how to do it’s treat patients. and then THIS MEDICAL MARVEL MOTHERFUCKER comes in with his fucked up gene spliced half human half vulcan biology and the rarest most obscure blood type even among vulcans with ZERO precedent for his existence or medical baseline and also happens to be THE WORST PATIENT IN HISTORY. REFUSES to sit still and follow instructions. always making smart ass comments about your silly human emotionalism. you’ll get insane fucking readings and be like “spock i think you’re dying” and the bastard will answer with a straight face “yes. that’s just pon farr.” “can you tell me how to treat it?” “no.” and then just walks out of the fucking sickbay. you’re constantly busting your ass trying to figure out how to keep this human-alien catboy mix’n’match medical nightmare from hell alive and healthy and all you get in return is backhanded compliments from an emotionally stunted fruit. and you can’t even complain about it to your best friend because he’s too busy doodling this obstinate motherfucker’s name all over his notebook while eye-fucking him on the middle of the bridge. hell i’d be an alcoholic too.

They really went all in on the badboy haircut and brows of Spock in the Pilot episode and I am living for the accuracy.

What do you mean Kirk wasn't trying to kiss Spock in this scene?
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
If he was just trying to stand, he didn't have to lean that much closer...
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Or stare rather intently and silently
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
and keep on staring even when he wasn't able to...
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tell me he doesn't look like he had the sudden urge to kiss Spock but caught himself when Spock suddenly looked back and he had to abort and cover it up by standing up.

Just rewatched "The search for Spock". My god, that Spock's pon farr on Genesis feels weird and out of place: bares no meaning and serves absolutely NO narrative purpose. I mean, it doesn't even correspond with his aging speed: he's growing by the minute, and yet - they have the whole night(!) for him just to be in pon farr! Shouldn't he just passed it in seconds without even noticing? The fact, that he spends it (being probably underage himself) with his student/daughter figure, without recognizing her or having any romantic interest in her later, makes this situation feel awkward and wrong. Why bother at all? The only logical explanation I can think of, is that they probably were afraid for the show to feel too gay. Which it does anyway, as it should, being a true love story between two men.
