Kinktober | Junipers for Julian 🍋
Kirsten x Julian
Requested by @art-of-ket! She was super sweet to work with and anyone reading this should go check out her amazing art! Thanks for letting me borrow Kirsten Yelyzavet!
CW: biting, body worship
~ 900 words
Alone in a dark and secluded library with the downright handsome and entirely unassuming Doctor Julian Devorak? How did Kirsten Yelyzavet get so damn lucky? Well, she planned it all out of course.
It wasn’t until the two had taken the stairs several levels down to the basement archives that Julian had the mind to ask what it was they were down there for.
Kirsten didn’t feel the need to come up with a lie. Instead she turned to the doctor, her eyes glinting. She lightly curled her hands over his rib cage and leaned some of her weight against him.
“Look, Ilya, we’re all alone.” Kirsten pressed until Julian bumped into an errant desk, knocking almost all of its contents to the floor. Despite the dip in her gaze and the way she tipped forward to reveal more and more of her chest, Julian chuckled nervously, “Let me get that.”
Kirsten’s lips met only air as Julian ducked under the desk. The move had Kirsten second guessing herself, but then Julian cleared his throat, drawing her attention to his position on the floor.
The doctor was on his hands and knees, his backside, snug in leather trousers, drawing teasing lines.
“Don’t mind me,” Julian groaned theatrically, “I’m just trying to make sure I get all of the items that fell.”
Kirsten lowered herself to her knees and accompanied him under the table. In a matter of seconds, Julian’s trousers were shrugged down to the middle of his thighs. Kirsten positioned herself behind him, close enough to kiss and nip at his shoulder while pumping his cock with her right hand. Her left was under his shirt, stroking his defined abdominal muscles.
“You’re very – ngh!” Julian stuttered against her quick bites. “Ambidextrous or – ow – good at multitasking, or… gods, I don’t know what to call it, but it feels good.”
Kirsten hummed in amusement as she nuzzled against his sore skin. She dug her fingernails a little into the seam of his linea alba as she reestablished her grip on his cock and jerked a little faster.
“Flattery is nice, Ilya, but it won’t help you come sooner. Are you going to come by the way?”
Julian groaned in earnest this time. Kirsten buried her face in the hair at his nape, which was slightly damp from trying to hold it all in.
“Because if you are, then we can just wrap this up right now and go home for the evening.”
Julian panted, “No, not that. I’m not ready to come. I’m trying not to –”
Kirsten slowed down. “Then tell me what you want and tell me quickly.”
Julian turned to look at her. “Darling, I’m afraid it’s not that exciting.”
Kirsten knew that Julian, being the one who usually sacrificed his own comfort for the happiness of others, needed a little encouragement every now and then.
So she bit down on his shoulder very, very hard.
Julian crumpled to the floor and cried out. When Kirsten pulled away, his cheeks were dusted with a fresh blush. Apparently, the jolt to his nerves was just what he needed. The doctor swallowed a lump in his throat and said, “I want to jerk myself off while you…”
Kirsten arched an expectant brow.
Julian’s cheeks darkened to an even rosier shade. “While you…” He reached out and gently took Kirsten by the wrist. Then he guided her hand up his shirt again, against his torso.
Kirsten felt her face grow warm. “I didn’t think you noticed, Doctor.”
Julian’s silver gaze held hers as his voice dipped lower. “I have a fascination with anatomy, Kirsten. So I can tell when someone is fixated on mine.”
Kirsten dropped to his level and gave his unsuspecting mouth several full, fierce kisses. Julian’s pants and chopped moans only emboldened her to keep going. He relaxed onto his back and took his cock in his hand while Kirsten edged south.
Then she sat up, taking a moment to retrieve something from her bag. A small tube of rouge. Julian watched her with a mixture of fondness and excitement as she applied the paint to her lips. It wasn’t blood red, but rather a shade closer to Julian’s hair. Kirsten made the rouge herself, staining it with juniper berries to achieve the color.
“So you’ll have some souvenirs to look at tonight, Ilya.”
Kirsten put the rouge away and went back to what she loved best, loving her doctor. Julian got himself off while she left lip-shaped burgundy gifts all along his abs and on the outside of his thighs.
“Please, Kirsten,” Julian begged, “my cock. Leave some on my cock, will you?”He removed his hand and gave her the reins. Kirsten opened her eyes and locked them with Ilya’s as she kissed his length.
Julian sighed, “Sweet Kirsten, c-can I come now?”
Kirsten made a thoughtful sound, as if to consider. But she had no intentions of letting Julian off the hook that easily. She passed her gaze over the valley of juniper-stained kisses climbing the planes of his abdomen and spilling over his thighs. It only confirmed that Kirsten did not want to step away from such a view as this.
“No,” she whispered against Julian’s stiff length, “it’s not time yet.”
The doctor muttered something unintelligible as he threw his head back, determined to hold out until his lover said otherwise.

When It Started: Fab Moretti
Fabrizio Moretti or Fab was born on June 2, 1980 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. His father worked as a nuclear engineer originally from Italy, while his mother hailed from Brazil. At the age of three, his family moved to New York City only planning to stay for three years, but ended up living there for 17. The future Strokes drummer admitted that it was a struggle growing up. “I didn't feel like a Brazilian, I didn't feel like an Italian, and I certainly didn't feel like an American. So I was walking around trying to find my identity through New York City." He began drumming at the age of five utilizing a soundproof closet in his family's Manhattan apartment. Fab would go on to attend The Anglo American international School, which would merge with the Dwight School leading to him meeting future Strokes Nick Valensi and Julian Casablancas. After graduation, he would study sculpture at SUNY New Paltz for a short time until dropping out to focus on music.
He began drumming in high school for an informal band with Valensi and Casablancas, which continued even after the latter two had left the Dwight School. In 1998, the Strokes were formed after Albert Hammond Jr. joined the group. Moretti has said in the past that he has always tried to keep his drumming style very simple, including a four piece drum kit with a symbol and a hi hat. Early on, Fab would sometimes drum so hard that he broke his sticks trying to embrace the band’s early punk sound. In 2007, he would join up with Rodrigo Amarante and Binky Shapiro to form the group Little Joy while on hiatus with the Strokes. The idea for the group came about when Amarante and Fab met at a music festival in Lisbon in 2006. They would release their debut album in 2008 with Rough Trade Records. In 2018, he helped to cofound the synthpop band and artist collective Machinegum. Members also include Ian Devaney (Nation of Language), Delicate Steve, Chris Egan, Martin Bonventre, and Erin Victoria Axtel. The group performs and records music, as well as doing installations at art galleries. In December 2019, the group released its first album on Frenchkiss Records entitled Conduit. Over the years, he has contributed on other albums. In 2008, he played drums on a track for the Neon Neon release Stainless Style. In 2012, he played drums on the Ke$ha track “Only Wanna Dance With You, which also included vocals from Julian Casablancas. In 2013, he co wrote a track entitled “Prisoner” for Har Mar Superstar’s album Bye Bye 17 with Amarante and Devandra Banhart. Moretti and Amarante also contributed as Banhart’s backing band for her 2013 tour. He remixed the 2014 Spoon track “Inside Out” on an EP for the band. In 2016, he joined with Beck and Nick Valensi to contribute a track for the nonprofit Play It Forward campaign covering the Eagles of Death Metal after the 2015 Paris attacks. He has even sat in as a drummer for the 8G Band on Late Night with Seth Meyers. One of his biggest hobbies when not playing music comes as a visual artist and sculptor. In 2013, he contributed to an art project called Rag + Bone, which eventually showcased his work in New York City. Throughout the 2010’s, he has collaborated with French cartoonist Luz on a variety of art projects. They even shared a studio in Paris for a short time. In 2019, he collaborated with Italian art dealer Fabrizio Moretti (Yes the same name) called Fabrizio Moretti x Fabrizio Moretti In Passing at Sotheby's in New York.
The drummer is actually not a United States citizen, despite living here for most of his life. He holds Italian citizenship, but not American or Brazilian. Over the years, he has dated a number of celebrities, but never married including Drew Barrymore from 2002 until 2007, Kirsten Dunst in 2007, and Kristen Wiig from 2011 to 2013. He would later have a relationship with his Little Joy bandmate Binky Shapiro for four years. He currently lives by himself in an apartment in Brooklyn as of spring 2020.

In music, playing by ear is a term for performing a piece from memory and intuition rather than from a proper score. By Ear takes inspiration from this concept and uses it as a model for collaboration between visual artists from Berlin and Los Angeles/New York. Delayed for almost two years, the exhibition at Tiger Strikes Asteroid Gallery will showcase works created by Berlin based artists following concepts from LA/NYC based artists in the orbit of Tiger Strikes Asteroid. Each artist in the exhibition has made a new artwork based solely on audio descriptions of an existing artwork created by artists from the other city. It is an exercise in interpretation and imagination and willfully limited communication in an age defined by fluid and constant contact. It is a way for artists to be generous with their ideas, diminish their ego and try to harmonize with a fellow artist from another culture.
This project has been generously supported by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation.

Thilo Droste (b. 1977) lives and works in Berlin. His works often follow an intense examination of existing situations and conditions, themes and different contexts. The conceptual works show thoughtfulness and sensuality also in the choice of medium and material. Even the truth has to bend in its claim to truth, honestly and persistently he questions the ordinary with subtle resistance, not with a grand revolutionary gesture. He counters the complexity of the content process with a humorous lightness of execution. Wit, refined simplicity and technical skill characterize the appearance of his work.
His life path has all the set pieces (residencies, exhibitions in museums and galleries, and purchases from international collections) of a serious artist‘s career.

Digital Elixir 2:00PM Water Cooler 8/6/2019
By Lambert Strether of Corrente
Patient readers, this is a wildly out-of-whack Water Cooler that I will shortly rebalance. I needed to do a pantry clear-out on the Politics section, which I did not complete because I got a late start. I also need to add the material about the feral hogs (you’ll find out). I hope there’s enough to inspire in the mean time. –lambert
Politics
“But what is government itself, but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?” –James Madison, Federalist 51
“They had one weapon left and both knew it: treachery.” –Frank Herbert, Dune
“2020 Democratic Presidential Nomination” [RealClearPolitics] (average of five polls). As of August 1: Biden fluctuates to 32.2% (32.0), Sanders up to 16.5% (16.4%), Warren down at 14.0% (14.8%), Buttigieg flat at 5.5% (5.6%), Harris down at 10.3% (11.0%), Beto separating himself from the bottom feeders, interestingly. others Brownian motion. If these trends continue in the next release, Sanders will the only winner of both debates.

Gabbard (D)(2): “Inside the Tulsi Hive” [The Baffler]. “It is true that the Democratic Party is depressingly thin on marginally palpable foreign policy positions, and that, with the DNC’s blackballing of Mike Gravel, she will likely be the most anti-war candidate on display this evening. But despite her Nation byline and experience as a Bernie surrogate, Gabbard’s is not a foreign policy of the left.” • Which is fair; The American Conservative is sound on intervention. This is not an article Gabbard supporters will like.

Surely coincidence, but I did call for a bit more “joy” from the Sanders and Warren campaigns just the other day.
Trump (R)(1): “Trump Outperformed His Popularity in 2016. That Might Not Happen in 2020” [Ed Kilgore, New York Magazine]. “Again, the X factor in comparing Trump’s likely vote in 2016 and in 2020 is incumbency, which we tend to think of as an asset even when it’s not. If there is any incumbency advantage, it’s likely baked right into Trump’s approval ratings. As Kondik points out, the relationship between presidential approval and reelection-year vote share is strong. Among presidents winning reelection, Obama exceeded his election-eve approval rating by one point in 2012 (as did Reagan in 1984), and George W. Bush exceeded his by two points in 2004. The only recent president who exceeded his approval ratings in vote share by more than two points was Poppy Bush in 1992, and he got beaten like a drum. It’s worth thinking about this, too: For all the talk about Trump’s boffo economy, overall public assessments of the direction of the country remain sour…. An unpopular president leading an unhappy country could still get reelected, but the widespread, 2016-based belief that Trump is on some clear trajectory to a second term is mostly superstition… An unpopular president leading an unhappy country could still get reelected, but the widespread, 2016-based belief that Trump is on some clear trajectory to a second term is mostly superstition.”
Warren (D)(1): “Warren faces lingering concerns about her ability to beat Trump” [The Hill]. “One strategist who is neutral in the race argued that part of the problem comes down to the one possible mistake Warren made ahead of the race: her decision to take a DNA test after President Trump repeatedly mocked her for her claim that she was Native American. ‘Everyone remembers how she played right into his hands,’ the strategist said. ‘I think a lot of people look at the moment and say she can’t go up against Trump because she’s not electable even if she is a damn good candidate.’” • One thing about Sanders: You can be confident Trump will never get inside his head.

“Here Are The Democratic Presidential Candidates With The Most Donations From Billionaires” [Forbes]. “As of the last filing deadline with the Federal Election Commission on July 15th, 67 billionaires — including spouses and members of billionaire families — had donated to the 20 Democratic candidates that debated in Detroit last week.” • Here are the rankings:
#1 Pete Buttigieg: 23 billionaire donors #2 Cory Booker: 18 billionaire donors #3 Kamala Harris: 17 billionaire donors #4 Michael Bennet: 15 billionaire donors #5 Joe Biden: 13 billionaire donors #6 John Hickenlooper: 11 billionaire donors #7 Beto O’Rourke: 9 billionaire donors #8 Amy Klobuchar: 8 billionaire donors #9 Jay Inslee: 5 billionaire donors #10 Kirsten Gillibrand: 4 billionaire donors #11 John Delaney: 3 billionaire donors #12 Elizabeth Warren and Steve Bullock: 2 billionaire donors each #13 Tulsi Gabbard, Andrew Yang, and Marianne Williamson: 1 billionaire donor each #14 Bernie Sanders, Julian Castro, Bill De Blasio, and Tim Ryan: 0 billionaire donors
El Paso Shooting
Readers, I’m still hung up on a post on the El Paso shootings. My basic idea is to conceive of the country as a sort of cracking tower, with Patrick Crusius, the shooter, as a highly refined product from the very top of the distillation column. (Most of us proles are mere crude, at the bottom.) The various levels of our cracking tower would be, from highest to lowest:
5 Priming and Triggering 4 Mobilization 3 Ideology 2 Ascriptive identity 1 Political economy
I’m thinking of this structure (model) partly just to have buckets to throw the mass of material into, and partly to have a way to sort out where policy intervention should take place. But I’m not sure if I’ve got all the levels I need. Gun purchase might fit under mobilization, for example, if we think of the purchase as logistics. Video games might go under ideology, if we think of ideology as lived experience. Ineffectual Democrat efforts would go under mobilization. Trump’s speeches might (arguably) go either under ideology or priming. I’d welcome comments — ok, help — from readers on this structure.

“String of gun deaths reshapes Democratic primary” [Politico]. “The tragedies have the potential to change the dynamics in the broader campaign for the White House, as President Donald Trump and his supporters reeled from comparisons of their rhetoric about immigrants with that of a manifesto suspected of being from the shooter in El Paso, a border city with a mostly Latino population.” • I’m not sure I’m up to the task of putting on my yellow waders and reading the manifesto, but I think Politico is right that the manifesto is important; it distinguishes the El Paso shooter from the Dayton shooter.

“Diversity Dustup Renews Call For Democrats’ Campaign Arm To End Consultant Blacklist” [HuffPo]. “Our Revolution, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee and the Harvard College Democrats argue that the [DCCC policy blacklisting consultants and firms that work for candidates challenging House Democrats in primaries] makes it harder for women and people of color to win seats in Congress…. Maria Langholz, a spokeswoman for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, argued that gender and racial diversity often go hand-in-hand with advocacy of more progressive policies.” • Like with Obama, whose black skin enabled a direct readout of his progressivism, as is well known.
“Swing State Dems Could Pay Price for DGA Chief Raimondo’s Ethics Woes” [Inside Sources]. “Today, Gov. Raimondo is embroiled in controversy over a secret, no-bid, billion-dollar gaming contract; the Rhode Island GOP has filed a formal complaint against her with the state’s Ethics Commission; and polls show she has the highest disapproval rating of any Democratic governor in America. Raimondo’s first term as governor was dogged by questions over a lack of transparency regarding questionable fundraising and allegations of “pay-to-play” scandals, but she rode the 2018 anti-Trump “blue wave” to re-election. That’s not necessarily a surprise to people familiar with Rhode Island’s tradition of embracing ethically-elastic politicians. What is surprising is the decision of her fellow state executives to make Raimondo chair of the Democratic Governor’s Association (DGA) and, as a result, bring her controversies from Rhode Island to Washington.”
“Voters, groups, parties, and elections” [Lane Kenworthy]. “While the two parties have been evenly matched in national elections in recent decades, a number of indicators suggest looming difficulties for the Republicans: demographic trends, the rise of postmaterialism and accompanying decline of cultural conservatism, and the progressivism and Democratic voting of younger cohorts. Backlash against growing racial diversity and immigration will help the Republicans, but California’s experience over the past generation suggests it may do so only temporarily.” • A lengthy but interesting wrap-up, concluding, as yo see, with support for the “coalition of the ascendant” thesis.
“Who Should Secure Congressional Campaigns?” [Idle Words]. “[W]hat I mean by campaign security: protecting the online lives of people on and around a campaign from intrusion, with a special emphasis on their personal email and social media accounts. I emphasize the personal part because many campaign security efforts start by declaring personal data out of scope, and then solve the easier problem of protecting what’s left. This is like putting a lock on your glove compartment to deter car theft.”

DSA Convention on fascism. Thread:
Today at @DSAcon2019, there was vigorous debate over Resolution #9 to establish a national antifascist working group. Dissent and debate is always good, but this is an issue of great importance to me, so I tried to do something I rarely do: publicly argue against the resolution.
— Leonard Pierce (@leonardpierce) August 4, 2019
“The democratic socialist revolution comes to a crossroads” [NBC]. “On the night Donald Trump won the presidency in 2016, the Democratic Socialists of America had about 8,000 dues-paying members. By the time the group opened its 2017 convention the next summer, its ranks had grown threefold. This past weekend, when delegates from around the country gathered here in Georgia, the number was more than double that — DSA is now home to 56,000 mostly young activists, making it the largest socialist organization in the country. More remarkable than its growth, though, is DSA’s increasing presence on the electoral stage. Nearly 100 democratic socialists now hold office at almost all levels of government, from local school boards to the US Congress, where freshman Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib are at the front line of the fight over the Democratic Party’s future — and independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, though not directly affiliated with the group, is mounting his second campaign for the party’s presidential nomination.” • DSA coverage still seems reasonably objective, I can’t think why, especially with RussiaGate.
News of the Wired
“From a wrongful arrest to a life-saving romance: the typos that have changed people’s lives” [Guardian]. “Much later, years later, he would learn that a single-digit typo had tied his computer, via its IP address, to someone else’s crime. But that first Saturday, waiting in a cell, Lang knew none of this.” • And much, much more. No doubt the same will happen with facial recognition.

Readers: Water Cooler is a standalone entity not covered by the annual NC fundraiser. So do feel free to make a contribution today or any day. Here is why: Regular positive feedback both makes me feel good and lets me know I’m on the right track with coverage. When I get no donations for five or ten days I get worried. More tangibly, a constant trickle of donations helps me with expenses, and I factor in that trickle when setting fundraising goals:
Here is the screen that will appear, which I have helpfully annotated.
Readers, thank you very much. The mix of one-time contributions to smaller, monthly subscriptions is now more like what is was, and hence the total I budget for is back to normal as well. 7 winners and 8 losers of the first 2020 DNC presidential debate lineup - Vox.com
Tumblr media
The Democratic Party has the lineups for its first 2020 presidential debate ready — two nights, 10 candidates each night — and before anyone takes the stage, we already have a few winners and some losers. The debates are the formal introduction of the 2020 candidates to a national TV audience. It’s the first time they’ll appear together at the same place, answer the same questions, and confront one another about their differences and why their vision for the Democratic Party’s future is the best path to beating Donald Trump. But it’s not like the eventual Democratic nominee is going to be determined by whether Candidate X stood at a podium next to Candidate Y or Candidate Z on a balmy summer night in Miami seven months before anybody starts voting. Don’t take this too seriously. First, the news. The Democratic debates will be spread out over two nights. The first night, Wednesday, June 26, will start at 9 pm ET and the candidates on stage will be: Sen. Cory Booker, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former Texas Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Sen. Amy Klobuchar, former Rep. John Delaney, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, former US Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro, Rep. Tim Ryan, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee. The lineup for the following night, June 27, also starting at 9 pm ET, will be: Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Kamala Harris, former Vice President Joe Biden, South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Michael Bennet, author Marianne Williamson, Rep. Eric Swalwell, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, entrepreneur Andrew Yang, and former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. The Democratic National Committee drew the names by lottery, rather than opt for a hierarchical approach based on polling or fundraising as Republicans did with their huge presidential field in 2016. The random outcome gives some candidates reason to be happy; others might find themselves a little annoyed. Here are semi-serious winners and losers. Loser: Elizabeth Warren Warren has had a series of very good moments during 2020 forums and town halls so far. What she really wanted was an opportunity to be on the same stage as Joe Biden.
Tumblr media
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) speaks at the Iowa Democratic Party’s Hall of Fame Dinner Scott Olson/Getty Images Not only is Biden the dominant frontrunner in the race, but she has some serious policy disagreements with him — notably over the 2005 bankruptcy bill Biden shepherded through Congress, and that Warren vehemently opposed back when she was a bankruptcy law professor (its passage inspired her to get into politics). Now, chance is rerouting her to a debate stage filled with mostly lower-tier candidates including John Delaney, Tim Ryan, and Bill de Blasio — plus fellow Sens. Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar. Sure, there will still be plenty of ways for Warren to distinguish herself. But in the end, any top-five 2020 candidate who is not Biden wanted to share a debate stage with Biden — hoping for a big moment to knock him off his pedestal. Warren has been climbing in polls over the past month, and is now solidly in the top three with Biden and Bernie Sanders. The fact that Sanders — Warren’s main competition for progressive voters — will get that chance at the first debate and she won’t, must sting. Sanders will be able to own the populist, left-of-Biden lane without Warren muscling into the territory. Furthermore, she won’t even get a chance to face off against Sanders. It may be inconvenient, but she likely has a chance to face off against Biden in the near future, building anticipation for that showdown. Winner: Elizabeth Warren Still, there’s a simple argument to made that Warren’s debate placement is Actually Good: She’s the biggest name on the first night, when excitement will be at its highest. Warren will clearly enter the first debate of the campaign season as the star of her respective stage. She’s a solid third in national polls and has a distinct brand as the policy candidate, with more than a dozen proposals and counting. The candidates that come closest to her on the stage are O’Rourke, Booker, and Klobuchar, and they’re all lagging far behind Warren in the polls. Not to mention, sitting back and letting Sanders and Biden duke it out — while taking copious notes to prepare for the second DNC debate — is a nice bonus for a candidate who seems to have strong momentum behind her. Winner: Bernie Sanders Sanders is one of many self-proclaimed progressives in the 2020 Democratic primary, but the Vermont senator has been deliberate about crafting a campaign message that mainly attacks the moderates. Lucky for him, he’s going to be on stage with quite a few of them. That includes the current polling frontrunner and the candidate Sanders is chasing: Joe Biden.
Tumblr media
Sen. Bernie Sanders. Sarah Silbiger/Getty Images This debate will play straight into Sanders’s biggest campaign message so far: There’s no time for centrism, no time for incremental change. Sanders’s campaign started using the catchphrase #NoMiddleGround after a Reuters report quoted a Biden campaign adviser calling for “middle ground” on climate policy. The campaign has called out Colorado’s former Gov. John Hickenlooper for his centrism too; Hickenlooper gave a speech decrying Sanders’s brand of democratic socialism after the Vermont senator delivered remarks defending the ideology this week. Sanders now gets to go up against Biden, Hickenlooper and others like Bennet in one night. (Then again, Bennet’s probably a winner in this scenario too. His fundraising campaign to get him on the debate stage was so he could argue against Medicare-for-all. Who better to argue about that with than the biggest single-payer champion of them all, Sanders.) Sanders and Warren won’t be on stage together, which means he doesn’t have to differentiate himself from the other most prominent progressive quite yet. Instead, he will get the chance to show just how stark the ideological divide is in the field. Unsurprisingly, the Sanders campaign said it was “happy” with the roster. “This is a terrific lineup because there will be a real debate over the key set of choices in this Democratic primary,” Faiz Shakir, Sanders’ campaign manager told Vox in a statement. Winners: Cory Booker, Beto O’Rourke, and Amy Klobuchar
Tumblr media
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), calls for Senate Judiciary conformation hearings for Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, during a news conference news conference in front of the US Supreme Court, jointed by Senate colleagues. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) is second from left. Mark Wilson/Getty Images If you look at the Iowa polls, these three candidates are registering some support — 3 percent on average for Klobuchar, 3.5 percent for Booker, 4.5 percent for O’Rourke — so they have established themselves as a small cut above the other also-rans. But they are still waiting for a breakout moment if their campaigns are to have any hope of living long after the first state on the primary calendar. The second night is already overloaded with star power: Biden, Sanders, and Harris are all better-known among Democratic voters than this trio, according to Morning Consult. With this lineup, they will still get to take the stage with a top-tier candidate rising in the polls — Warren — but they will be at less risk of being drowned out by Sanders and Biden sparring. Booker, O’Rourke, and Klobuchar still need to introduce themselves to the 20-30 percent of Democratic voters who say they have never heard of these three. They should benefit from being the biggest names on stage for the first debate night, at least outside of Warren. Losers: Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper Both of these Colorado centrists are running against the Democratic Party’s leftward drift — which could make it hard for either of them to distinguish themselves when they are on the same stage. They are two over-50 white guys with similar ideology, from the same state. There’s opportunity for both of them in taking on Bernie Sanders. They want to offer an alternative to his leftist vision for the party. But they also have to share the stage with each other. Winner (with strong loser potential): Kirsten Gillibrand It’s a mixed bag for Gillibrand, who will be onstage alongside a bevy of frontrunners even as her own campaign has struggled to make a dent in the polls. But we choose to focus on the good news here for the New York senator.
Tumblr media
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Justin Sullivan/Getty Images Given how high-profile these debates will be, this could be just the opportunity she needs to demonstrate that her candidacy should be considered at the same level as a Biden, Harris or Sanders. Before jumping in the race, Gillibrand was seen as a leading contender alongside a number of her colleagues, though her campaign has floundered since its debut earlier this year. The DNC debates could be her best chance to change the narrative around her “failure to launch,” especially since she got a slot on the more star-driven of the two nights. On the other hand, it could be tough for Gillibrand to secure a breakout moment given the top-tier candidates she’ll be competing with for much-needed screen time and attention (in theory, every candidate would only get about 12 minutes of airtime each, not accounting for commercials). Losers: Steve Bullock, Wayne Messam, Mike Gravel, and Seth Moulton These four — Montana Gov. Bullock, Miramar, Florida, Mayor Messam, former Sen. Gravel and current Rep. Seth Moulton — got cut from the debates. In such a crowded field, if you can’t even get on stage, that’s a tough blow. Winner: Andrew Yang Yang wanted just one thing: to be on the debate stage with Joe Biden so people would Google to find out who he is. He got his wish. Loser: Indecisive voters Lots of choices, folks. Lots of choices. Read More Read the full article
