One of the things about canon vs fanon Akashi that probably shocked me the most is the age he was when he lost his mother. I've seen almost everywhere that "he was a very young child", and I don't know, maybe it's just my definition of a young child being different, but I've always interpreted it as "around 5 years old", especially since we're talking here about someone who's 15-16 when the main plot is happening.

Seijuurou was in fifth grade when Shiori died (Chapter 266, Volume 30). That boy was around TEN OR ELEVEN when she died. At TWELVE he started Teikou. The trauma wasn't even probably healed. He lost his biggest and only support in the extreme domestic situation he was in and literally like 3 years later we have the GoM falling apart and him switching personalities. By Winter Cup, it was around five years after her death. On the other hand, he was only 15-16 at that time, so for him, it was a third of his life, but five years is still not a lot.

He probably remembers her very vividly, causing him even more pain. Also - he started switching personalities right after her death (also mentioned in the same chapter) and Midorima did acknowledge that sometimes Akashi seemed to be a different person, so the grand switch wasn't just "I'm going to lose" moment, it was going on since Shiori's death and it just cumulated and exploded then.

He wasn't a baby when Shiori died, he was a preteen, which was probably the worst moment in a person's life for losing someone you're that close with, because you're old enough to understand that they're gone forever, but young enough to not understand fully how the future might look like and how to cope with the lost.

If he was younger - he would probably forget most of his life with his mother there and it would only be some nice memories.

If he was older - he would probably be able to cope better with her passing. It sure would've been hard, but probably not that hard as it actually was.

He lost her in the worst possible moment, also almost right before starting a new school, right before starting to mature physically. With everything new suddenly appearing in his life, he was left alone, without the only person that seemed to have cared about him.

you were having dinner with your family, and your boyfriend, taiga. your brother, father and mother sat conversing with taiga when you reached for the bowl of potato salad, however this action was watched by your cousin - haizaki. he was a bit of a pain in the ass. he made snide comments about taiga, and complained and bitched about random things too.

haizaki's head rose and his signature smirk began to dance on his face, "oh, [y/n]. don't eat too much. taiga wouldn't want to be with a fatty," he commented. you lifted you head slightly, eyes and face void from any emotion, and set your utensils down, but said nothing. beside you, taiga's face went red with anger. gently, you placed a hand on his arm and shook your head slightly which made your aunty, haizaki's mother snort, and his sister scoff and roll her eyes.

throughout the dinner, you'd have to continue to listen to haizaki and his sister make remarks about what you wore, your makeup, your diet, your achievements; the works. still you said nothing and took snide comment after snide comment. yes, what they said hurt, but you'll be damned if anyone thought you'd let your cousins get the better of you. however, it was only until around the same time dessert came out that haizaki and his sister upped their insults.

"you don't need dessert, do you, [y/n]? you're already fat," haizaki's sister commented and thats when it hit a nerve. you weren't fat. in fact you were the fittest, right after taiga. you were a swimmer on the seirin high school team and you did boxing with taiga, and plates on alternating days. so if anything, you put them to shame in that regard. you got up from your seat, grabbed your coat from the coat room and left the house to sit in taiga's hellcat redeye.

as you settled into the car, you sighed, your mind kept replaying what you've been hearing the whole night. as time slowed, and your breathing relaxed, you dozed off, snuggled into one of taiga's real fluffy hoodies he'd brought with him just in case he felt cold. a tapping on the passenger side window startled you, making you jump from your sleep and your head snapped toward the window.

taiga had his knuckle raised from tapping on the window, and he peered at you through the glass. he signaled for you to open the window and you press on the window switch. taiga tilted his head and looked at you, "You not coming back up to finish eating?" he asked, his voice laced with slight worry. you shook your head and smiled half-heartedly. taiga nodded then tilted his head down to press a kiss on your jaw, "alright. give me 2 minutes. I'll go get your bag," he said and walked back into the house, only to imerge minutes later.

as he got closer to the car, you noticed blood on the corner of his lips, and the knuckles on his right hand was grazed. he got into the car, turned, put your bag in the backseat and revved the engine since you'd started it when it went into the house. you stayed silent for a few minutes after we'd pulled out of my parents driveway. "taiga? what happened?" you asked softly. "huh? oh nothing. why do you ask?" he responded, voice his usual gruffiness. "you've blood on your face and your knuckles look like they hurt," you added. he flexed his hand and placed it on my thigh, "I beat that cousin of yours to a pulp. I had to wait for you to leave before I did it though," he answered, "the stuff he was saying made my blood boil. I hope you didn't believe anything your cousins were saying. I love you just the way you are," he said softly as he breaked at a traffic light. you smiled and thread your fingers together, "I know. I love you too."
