Gosho Aoyama's Detective Picture Book #8:
There is a certain charm in reading detective stories that are as much about the culture and the setting as about the actual detection. The Zenigata Heiji series by Kodo Nomura are set in the turbulent period between the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Meiji Restoration, and they follow the hot-headed Captain Zenigata Heiji, a young police detective with a special talent for tossing coins. His coin tosses are so accurate and lethal that it became a way of disarming or catching criminals, alongside his truncheon. He is locally known for this effectiveness in apprehending suspects, and he serves under his wise boss, police sergeant Sasano Shinsaburo, who often remarked in his own affectionate way about Heiji's failures. Competing with Heiji for recognition is his older rival Captain Ichihara Risuke, who, like Kogoro Mori, is often too rash in catching a criminal and ended by locking up the wrong person. Meanwhile, coming to Heiji's assistance is his trusty but bumbling sidekick Hachigoro (nicknamed Garappachi) and his beautiful girlfriend and later wife Shizu who would sometimes become a bait for the criminal for him to catch.
It is quite clear that the character of Shinichi's rival-turn-best-friend Hattori Heiji is based on Zenigata Heiji. Both are hot-headed and traditional but very stubborn in bringing a case to its conclusion; both have their signature lethal weapons, the former with his kendo and the latter with his truncheon; and both are very protective and loyal towards their loved ones. Though most of the short stories that I have read are not heavy on the detecting side, they serve as valuable insights into Japanese history and culture, and for that alone I would recommend checking them out.
Out of all the stories I've read, I like The Shape of a Vengeful Demon and The Case of Osan's Tattoo best.

Kyousuke: Hey, Nomura-kun, can we stay with you for a while?
Nomura: All of you?
Nomura: Why?
Kyousuke: Ishikawa-kun was playing with a Ouija board and cursed the whole boarding house.
Ishikawa: Okay, but Kayo-san wasn't any help. She doesn't know how to banish spirits, so she just kept throwing salt at them and yelling, "DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A HOTEL TO YOU!?"

Hakuoki Ginsei Souma Story
Well, this is the last of these stories that I can translate. The fanbook's got 5 other stories - four being associated with the seasons and one extra I don't know enough JP to understand what's it's about... and I'm too lazy to mtl the title (plus I don't remember which of those have/haven't been translated, and am also too lazy to check that right now since im driving myself crazy trying to download video stuff 😅).
Anyway, I don't know what I'm going to translate next month, but I should have more free time then so I'll hopefully get back to creating a backlog of translations... though if I don't, I guess I'll do things week by week, or whatever my schedule allows (sorry but r/l priorities>tl unfortunately hahaha).
Tumblr media
anyway, this story was originally published in B’s Log 2020年9月.
enjoy!
Hakuoki Ginsei B’s Log 2020年9月 Souma Short Story “Fumidzuki (文月)” [meaning the 7th month]
Translation by KumoriYami
During the start of summer, at the beginning of July
The days completely felt like summer, but the evenings/nights were still a bit cooler.
"...Ah, speaking of which, today is Tanabata [Star Festival]."
I was patrolling headquarters, and stopped in front of the bamboo branches decorating the inside of headquarters.
The bamboo of the Tanabata were decorated with paper strips and streamers, which were made by Toudou-san and Harada-san to properly celebrate/enjoy Tanabata.
…While I stood there, lost in thought, as I stared at the bamboo, a voice came from behind.
"Souma-kun? Good work on your patrol/Patrol must be exhausting."
"Ah... Yukimura-senpai. It's quite late, so why haven't you gone to sleep?"
"It's been getting very warm at night and I couldn't sleep. so I'm cooling off while reading these tanzaku [the pieces of paper that wishes get written on during Tanabata]."
Yukimura-senpai stood beside me, and looked up towards the bamboo/looked up hopefully at the bamboo [*same note as the eighth next line].
"This tanzaku, is it Nagakura-san's? It says "I want my swordsmanship to reach the pinnacle.""
"Ah, next to Nagakura-san's is Nomura's. Although he doesn't he say that he wants to win against the executives, he still wants to beat me."
As I watched this scenery swaying in the wind, I abruptly asked with interest.
"Senpai, what do you wish for?
"Huh?"
"As expected, you still want to find your father as soon as possible and return to Edo with Kodo-san…."
"Of course I wish for that…[though] I asked for something else on my tanzaku. I wished that everyone would be healthy."
Senpai had a slightly forced smile as she looked up at the sky [ the word for 'looked up' here can be interpreted so that this says "looked up at the sky hopefully"].
If you looked up, you could see that the night sky had spread like after the tide receded, and how silver skies flickered as they formed the Milky Way [or something. confusing structure].
"There were many people injured during the patrols, and apart from that, with the sudden heat after Tanabata, the number of people getting sick has also increased. We should look for countermeasures."
"...Senpai really is like a doctor."
"My level of knowledge is only to the extent of what I've heard about."
Senpai was very humble, but I didn't think like that.
I had seen Senpai learn how to tie bandages, studying medicine and do other things when she's not doing chores...
I also know that when Matsumoto-sensei visits, he teachs her together with Yamazaki-san.
And most importantly, she acts with kindness, which is essential for a doctor.
"Water needs to be drank frequently, and the time and place of practice/training needs to be changed. Although various types of assistance can be obtained…"
I open my mouth to ask Senpai who was reflecting on the problem.
"For cooling off in the summer, what about this? It's something the Chief specially prepared for Tanabata."
"This is...?"
What I brought out was a very small wind chime.
The sound that reverberated in the night wind was very crisp.
"It might just be a matter of mood, but it becomess cooler when you hear that sound."
"Nn... I think it's great. It's incredible how just one sound can make such a big difference."
It's wonderful.

Otome Zenigata with visions. The one with the shaved head is Kodo Nomura's coin-throwing detective, Zenigata-Heiji, the shrine is Kanda Shrine, near where Heiji's headquarters are, the coin represents a coin-shaped sand sculpture on Ariake Beach, and the man with the mustache is the head of the ECC, the European Customs Center, in a 'Lupin III Part 2' episode. This coin-shaped sculpture on Ariake Beach is known as the Zenigata-sunae.

A doodle I did yesterday! So part of Kodo's backstory is that Gin and Tachihara found him while they were on a mission. Sooo I couldn't help but doodle Gin bringing him back to their brother to show off, and Akutagawa isn't impressed :P

Hi, I’m sorry I’ve been so inactive but there’s been several reasons for that, number one being that my drawing tablet broke and I’m not really keen on drawing comic doodles on paper. But while I’m saving those ideas untill I get some means to effectively draw them again I decided to make myself this little Hakuouki character challenge:
I made a list of all Hakuouki characters I could name and remember (and who had some kind of picture existing) and put that into random generator to pick out a name, then I used another generator to pick out a random adjective and finally I would try to draw that. Here you can see my first 4 tries, I had fun with it so I’m planning to draw more of these in the future. I’m putting my name list under cut so if you don’t mind, please check it and feel free to comment me any name that I might have missed. I’m also taking this as a chance to practice lesser known characters.

My thoughts on Souma Kazue Hen
I rewatched Souma Hen at least six or seven times. And still I have mixed feelings about it.
Tumblr media
I’d like to start with the generals first. Yes, it is very different to any other Hakumyu before, with good points as well as in my opion bad points. The first thing you see is of course the stage. It is one of this things I still don’t like about it, I think it is too large, also the many moveable stairs are somewhat at disadvantage. I’d like to explain that: about the first point, one thing I liked really about the previous productions was that the stage don’t change so much and the stage is everywhere at the same time, also the Shinsengumi where a very small group at most counting 200 men. So the place where they belong where also a small piece of ground compared with the rest of this era. But OK Daisuke Nishida seem to love larger stage. Second the disadvantage is that while capturing one face in the foreground you can only see the feet of the person in the background which I think is somewhat, but Ok.... Due to the whole play they ran a lot and if I say a lot than it really is.
The second thing that will come to one’s mind is the music. I like it and I don’t. I read somewhere that they loved that Souma don’t have an own theme, but has the same as the whole shinsengumi, so it shows how he is integrated in them. I think from the view of the story it would made more sense, if had an own theme in the beginning where he is at first against them and than his theme would be slowly fading into the Shinsengumi theme. I like Chizurus Vocals as well as Kazamas, Hijikatas, Kondous, Saitous, Heisukes and Sannans. With that I’d like to point out that Miki completly convinced me, he is a really understandable character, also the actor gets him really well. For the others I am sorry, I can’t tell Shinpatsan and Sano-san apart from each other as well as Nomura.
I think the BGMs are OK, they are much like the game which is OK in a good way. The songs aren’t that captive as before, to be honest no matter how many times I watch it I can’t tell one song apart from another one except (because there are many where all sing, so I am confused??) for the ones including Miki. And why I have to be reminded in the opening, that all of them will die????? The only who seem to have an own theme is Kazama.  In the end, please don’t get me all to wrong I still listen to the whole musical as music and I still like it. Especially I love the song between Miki, Chizuru, Souma, Kazama and Yamazaki before the break as well as the equivalent to Bushidou or NEVER SAY GOODBYE FOREVER from Kazama Hen, the bloodsucking scene and the final.
The cast had major changes. Except for Kondou, Yamazaki, Kodo and Heisuke everyone changed, but also Suzuki Shogo came after a five years break to Hakumyu. I don’t know if it is for Corona or whatever, but while the curtain call they didn’t seem to enjoy the play as much as before. I think everyone did well except for Chizuru who seemed to more concernd about how her voice would sound so she couldn’t deliver the feelings of Chizuru that well. Risa Matsuzaki has a fine voice and partly gets Chizurus character well, but sometimes she herself seem so distant to the whole situation, I think. Mizuki Umetsu gives the role he play really all his soul and heart, which I learned to love about him. Also he is the one who carries the whole relationship on this shoulders. There are many scene where I get the feeling that he carries everything on his own. I guess this is where Matsuzakis inexpierence appears. It is her first musical as well first production, so it should be forgiven.  The next one who play a major role are Hijikata and Kondou. Kubota Hideyoshi is the fith Hijikata as well a good actor and he also picture a new Hijikata. I like that version besides that he cries, which in my opinion don’t fit the character.  I think Taira Imata get Kondou with every play better and better.
The SanBaka are Ok, but don’t have such a great chemistry, which could be caused due to pandemic. (They have to practise it over and over again, so they maybe growed bored out of it) And who is Nomura? He don’t have that much screentime, so I think we can’t get know him so well. I like his final songs, but outlying of that he don’t have that many songs. I like Saitou and think he is played well, can’t say the same about Souji, but well. The other played their part well I think.
For the script I think there are the most blind spots. I don’t know how to express what I think it is laking. After watching the Myu I watched the Souma Route (No Commantary Game Play) and there are I think really interesting points missing out. Also you get the feeling the stories rushes rough very fast, just to protact some few important scenes. That way a character evolution isn’t to be seen, as well there is no struggling from Souma or Chizuru or a conversation between them regarding life, the shinsengumi or whatever. There is no actual scene where Chizuru don’t appear. Also the interaction between everyone else seem to missing. The character were given to much line in too less time, so it seems even more rushing. The last thing that keep bothering me is that there isn’t the two part feeling. The first lighthearted first part and the going different ways and heavy part.
Tumblr media
To be honest, it isn’t that a bad interpretation of Hakuouki. Solely I think, it is a good production, relying much on the game. But I also think it is inferior to previous Hakumyu productions. I watched recently Kazama Shitan and really enjoyed it, the music arrangement, the cast, the stage (it was a bit large, but the stairs did’nt move every minute) and even the a bit overdone special effects.
Nonetheless I hope Hakumyu will keep carry on, with new hearts as well as the old one. And I stan the cast of Souma Hen, yes I do, no one is perfect and who wasn’t effected by the pandemic mentally? De ha o shitsurei shimasu!

SOUMA-HEN 2021 CAST
Hi, humans and oni, all fans of Hakumyu!
Since Souma-hen is a thing again I’ve recovered my original cast announcement post and updated it. The info about the actors is a mix between what I’ve found about them and info from the official cast page, but I haven’t included every past myu/stage play in the official info, so I’d recommend checking it if you’re interested in seeing more of any of these people.
Without further ado, I present you the official cast for the 2021 version of Musical Hakuoki Souma-hen:
Mizuki Umetsu (梅津瑞樹) is Kazue Souma
28 years old, his Twitter is @MizukiUmetsu, and he’s been in Musical Touken Ranbu and the Sanrio Boys stage play .
Risa Matsuzaki (松崎莉沙) is Chizuru Yukimura
She’s a member of Roys, a Japanese female duo chorus group. Playing Chizuru in this myu will be her first time as an actress. Her Twitter is @risadegozaimasu and she’s 24 years old.
Hidetoshi Kubota (久保田秀敏) is Toshizo Hijikata
Has worked in films and dramas before, also has myu/stage play experience (Sengoku Basara stage play , Moriarty the Patriot myu, etc.). He’s 33 years old and his Twitter is @kubotahidetoshi.
Shuji Kikuchi (菊池修司) is Souji Okita
First difference with the 2020 cast! Shuji Kikuchi replaces Shogo Yamazaki, who first appeared in Hakumyu in Shitan Hijikata-hen. He’s 25 and his Twiiter is @kutisyu. He’s been in some stage plays before, like the Pirates of the Frontier UtaPri stage play .
Shoichiro Oomi (大海将一郎) is Hajime Saito
His Twitter is @shoichiro_oomi. The protagonist/”your” character in the Fate/GO Babylonia Myu, also has some experience as a seiyuu (in fact google doesn’t list him as an actor but as a voice actor) and is/was in a group called "Hi! Superb"
Yuta Higuchi (樋口裕太) is back as Heisuke Todou!
His first Hakumyu was Shitan Hijikata-hen! He is 25 and he won a Junon Superboy contest (Most Photogenic) and according to Anime on Stage he’s been in other myus/stage plays, like Ensemble Stars and Yona of the Dawn. According to the cast page he’s been in  Ao no Exorcist and Hitman Reborn stage plays too. His Twitter is @higuchi24yuta.
Ryousuke Koike (小池亮介) is Nagakura Shinpachi
Second change in the cast, he’s replacing Yuta Kishimoto, who was Nagakura in both Shitan Hijikata-hen and Shitan Kazama-hen. He’s 25 and his Twitter is @ryosuke19951117. He was Akito/Agito in the Air Gear myu, and according to the cast page he wants everyone to think that Nagakura Shinpachi is cool (literally, 「永倉新八カッコいいな」kakkoii and everything)
Shouta Kawakami (川上将大) is Sanosuke Harada
He’s been in Tenimyu, Rice on stage, Hitman Reborn and Touken Ranbu stages/myus, among others. He’s 27 and his Twitter is @rjpmission. An anecdote: a few weeks ago someone I follow on Twitter went to see Rice on stage and he was one of the actors performing, which made me wonder if Souma-hen would happen since people from the cast were working on other things and I supposed that meant the situation in Japan was good enough to resume events like stage plays, included those that had been cancelled.
Teruma (輝馬) is back as Keisuke Sannan!
Sannan since Hakumyu Reimeiroku, he’s been in Kuromyu (William T Spears), Bungou Stray Dogs stage play, the Nanatsu no Taizai stage play and Tenimyu. His Twitter is @teruma_060 and he’s 31.
This makes me really happy! I still prefer Ryosuke Mikata, but he’s showed that he deserves the role, so I hope he stays in Hakumyu for many years to come! And I’m still mad that Teruma wasn’t in the Tango on the Campania Kuromyu...
Taizo Shiina (椎名鯛造) is back as Susumu Yamazaki!
First appeared in Shitan Hijikata-hen, and he’s been in some Sengoku Basara and Danganronpa stage plays, among others. He’s 34 and his Twitter is @TaizoShiina.
Taira Imata (井俣太良) is back as Isami Kondou!!!
Best dad since Okita-hen (second Hakumyu) and by this point, everyone’s senpai, what else can be said about this man??? If you’ve watched any Hakumyu other than Saito-hen, you already know him. Great man and actor, he’s 45 and his Twitter is @TAIRANT1975.
These are the characters/actors & actress that I covered in my first Souma-hen cast post. I actually wrote another one with the rest of the cast, but thanks to a broken mouse the whole post got deleted when it was almost finished. Time to redeem myself!
Syuya Sunagawa (砂川脩弥) is Saburo Miki!
Replacing Allen Kohatsu in the role of Miki, he’s 26 and his Twitter is @suna_syu_. It’s his first time in a musical, but he’s in the Kamen Rider Zero One drama. According to the Kamen Rider Wikia, he won the Avex Boys Award in 2016.
Masashi Sonomura (園村将司) is Risaburo Nomura!
He’s 22 and he’s @masashisonomura on Twitter. He’s been in Tenimyu and has done some stuff on TV (the cast page lists some things but I’m not familiar with them ;_;)
Masafumi Yokoyama (横山真史) is Kyuju Amagiri!
He’s 34 and he’s @masafumi21yoko on Twitter. He’s been in Touken Ranbu, Ikemen Sengoku and Toki no Kizuna stages. And as my friend and Amagiri’s biggest fan Lawrichai pointed out, he played Amagiri’s grandpa/relative in the Toki no Kizuna stage.
Takuma Sueno (末野卓磨) is back as Kyo Shiranui!
He’s 36 and he’s @sueno0724 on Twitter. His first Hakumyu was Shitan Kazama hen. Has been in the Sengoku Basara stage play and the Rantaro Shinobu myu (this one wasn’t that long ago so I remember seen funny pics of this on Twitter).
Hiroyuki Kawamoto (川本裕之) is back as Kodo Yukimura!
Egg dad since the times of Harada hen, he doesn’t have a Twitter account and apparently there isn’t that much info about him on Google D:
And... drum roll a big round of applause for our returning demon, the original, the one and only, SHOGO SUZUKI (鈴木勝吾) AS CHIKAGE KAZAMA!!!
I already spoiled this in my Souma-hen is back post but I’m sooooooooooooooo happy to see him back. He’s @Shogo_Suzuki_ on Twitter (where he’s posted photos of his Hakumyu-watching sessions more than once),he’s 31 and he played Kazama from the very beginning in Saito-hen until Live 2. During his absence from Hakumyu he didn’t stop acting, some of you may remember my post about his appearance in the Moriarty the Patriot myu.
Not that I dislike Yoshihide Sasaki (Hijikata in Reimei, and Kazama in Harada-hen and the 2020 Souma-hen cast), but I will always see him as my dear Viscount Druitt from Kuromyu. And let’s be honest, Shogo has his “own brand” of Kazama. He took the character and made it his own, having a unique way of portraying him and enjoying every last bit of it.
And that was the complete main cast! This time we had all the info from the start so I don’t think a follow-up post will be necessary.
As an ending note, I would like to dedicate this post to Serizawa’s actor, Akira Kubodera, who passed away last month. I’m sure he would love to see that everyone has been hoping for Souma-hen to return and that the Hakuoki Shinsengumi, or at least its spirit, can’t be defeated.
