Happy 30th Anniversary to Links Awakening!
Tumblr media
Get a print to help me save up for art school!
Tumblr media
I wanted to just do something quick and cute for this anniversary since that was my experience with the game. It doesn't take too long to finish and just going around the island is cute especially in the remake.
So naturally I spend almost 19 hours on this with the detailed background. I'm a character artist who doesn't have much practice with backgrounds so obviously make a super detailed one for the "quick and cute" anniversary piece great logic.
Anyway hope u like the piece lmao, I went really far out of my comfort zone with it.

WIP preview!!
(okay it's not technically a wip, it's a finished piece. but it's for febuwhump so I can't post it yet)
Time rounded up all the stragglers (Hyrule and Wild, mostly), bringing them all closer together. “Does everyone have their stuff?”
Despite the chorus of affirmatives brushing past Legend’s ears, he didn’t hear any of it. He heard the blood rushing in his ears like waves upon a sandy shore, the distant tune sung by a voice too good to be true. It all materialized before his eyes– Legend saw the rough seas in the thick of a thunderstorm, rolling and tossing as he struggled to cling to his tiny raft. His sail blustered in the horrid winds, and as he looked to the sky, he gasped, bracing himself for impact-
“-Legend!” Hyrule’s voice was the one to drag him out of it, small, calloused hands gripping his shoulders, shaking him roughly.
The Veteran gasped, neck and shoulders tensing as he quickly pushed Hyrule away, eyes wide. The traveler looked hurt for a brief second before the worry came back. As Legend glanced around, he realized they were all looking at him with varying degrees of concern and confusion.
I'm done with 2 of the days already and I'm feeling more confident about writing different members of the Chain! hopefully I can get them all done in time and become a completionist for my first ever month-long event :)

Just made a startling realization and comparison: Link's Awakening and Sonic and the Black Knight are both kid's game with sword combat in which the story and end goal...is ensuring that the End to the setting/world you are traversing through comes to pass. 🤯

And Then You Wake...
Ever since watching Inception, the idea of living life in one's dreams has always held an allure for me. Especially given how vivid and complex and awe-inspiring some of my dreams have been. After all, I'm not one who usually has dreams that feel like the every day, where I'm plugging away at work or going to school only to find I've forgotten to wear pants. Rather, my dreams have always felt like elaborate films or action set pieces (the ones I remember, at least). Sometimes there will be zombies chasing after me and a group of survivors who look like my friends. Other times, a dragon might erupt from the floor of my preschool.
I ask you, dear readers, who wouldn't want to explore that kind of fantastical world over the mundane boring real world?
Tumblr media
In The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, after being struck by lightning in the middle of a storm, Link washes up on the shores of Koholint Island. What he doesn't initially know, although he will later find out, is that Koholint exists only as the dream of the mythical Wind Fish. It's an illusory land filled with people and monsters and nightmares, along with references to the Mario games.
While some might argue Link's actions heinous as he strives to leave the island by waking the Wind Fish because to do so would destroy a living breathing world, I believe Link's actions are no worse than what we do in our fictional video games. For, no matter how real something can feel or seem, in the end, Marin and the villagers we meet are only figments of another's imagination. They aren't real. At least, not in the way most would understand.
I'm sure you've heard the argument before. Especially when one grows attached to a set of programmed pixels. In my head I know Garrus Vakkarian wouldn't look twice at me and that he's a fictional alien, but it doesn't stop me from fantasising over the best way to get him to fall for my Commander Shepard.
The same could be extended to characters in television shows and movies. The time we spent with them can feel as real as spending time with actual friends, but in the end, they're not actually a living breathing flesh human you could possibly bump into on the street. Yes, you might bump into the actor who plays them but an actor could be miles different from the character you've come to know and love.
On that note, just because something isn't real doesn't mean our connection with them isn't. As the Wind Fish says, though no-one else will ever encounter Koholint Island after it's gone, it lives on in Link's memory and the gamers who played the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a bit like grief and losing someone close to you. In fact, it's the perfect allegory/ metaphor.
They might be gone in the physical sense but they will always be with you in spirit. As long as you cling to those precious memories of who they once were and dream of the possibility of who they could be.
Now if you feel like someone has been cutting onions close to you, wipe away those tears for I need to get started proper on my impression on Link's Awakening.
Eschewing the very popular Tears of the Kingdom, I chose to use the back portion of 2023 to catch up on a few of the games I missed earlier in the Switch's life cycle in order to free up some storage on my limited storage space. 128GB is simply not enough. Heck, even the 700GB my PlayStation 5 internal storage isn't enough for all the games I want to play when every new game trends towards 100 GB upon disc install.
But I also wanted to play Link's Awakening because it was a Zelda game I have yet to play. And because it was also nice and short and I could use it as a palate cleanser from the very lengthy Fire Emblem: Engage. Plus, you know, the claymation style also tickled my fancy.
From the moment Link awoke, I was on my way gathering up all the necessary things I'd need to wake the Wind Fish and to explore Koholint Island. Along the way, I encountered nightmares trying to prevent the Wind Fish from waking, along with the occasional meta fourth wall breaks from the denizens of the world.
Over the course of the time I spent with the game, I managed to collect all of the heart containers, upgrades for my weapons and fish up Cheep Cheeps and Ol' Baron.
Unlike the sprawling open worlds that have come to dominate the wider video game landscape, Link's Awakening was downright compact, even as I occasionally backtracked because I missed a Secret Shell or unlocked a new way to reach a heart container. The world felt alive in a way so many open-world games lack because of the forethought when it came to item placement and the construction of the world.
Tumblr media
From a gameplay perspective, Link's Awakening follows a tried and true formula of unlocking specific items that help you in the following boss battle, which in turn allows Link to explore the rest of the island as new routes open up.
Given how short the game is, it helps gate certain content while also leaving players salivating for what might come next. I know I was always keen to see where Link would be directed to go next and how the new tools in his arsenal would help him solve the problems placed before him.
Special mention, though, needs to be placed on the Roc Feather, which allowed Link to jump. Oh, and the grapple hook. Those were some of the most useful tools in Link's arsenal and in most situations, they were the two items I kept equipped unless I faced an enemy that needed a different approach.
While some puzzles and dungeons could be a little obtuse, especially the latter ones, I didn't find myself too aggrieved. After all, in the day of the internet, it's easier to find the path I need to go to unlock the next path forward before putting my phone down to enjoy the game as is.
Still, a hint system wouldn't hurt on the odd occasion when the going gets tough. Especially when it came to figuring out how the horse chess pieces worked.
Tumblr media
As for story, well, there's not much to say. There's no real threat beyond the nightmares preventing the Wind Fish, and by extension Link, from awakening. Indeed, their actions are only confined to the dungeons they're located in and are only exacerbated by Link's attempt to get off the island to, no doubt, rescue Princess Zelda in some part of Hyrule.
There's no underlying subplot waiting to be uncovered.
Link's objective is clear. Wake the Wind Fish. Get off Koholint Island.
And once he's completed it, the game ends.
There is much that could be said of the minimal plot but it serves its purpose to keep the players plodding along. While the reveal that Koholint Island is only a dream might offer up a dilemma to players', Link, for his part, keeps on pressing on.
But as with all stories, be they video games, books and dreams, there always comes an end. If anything, Link's Awakening only serves to make it clear that although something may end, they can remain with us for as long as wish. Certainly, the creation of fanfiction is one such way. And even now when I look back on a wonderful, they all serve as a means to keeping Koholint Island alive although my time with it has gone, vanishing into the swirling mists of the subconsciousness as I rise to the surface and wake.

I rearranged MinaMart—I am a cheapo so I can only have 5 products listed at a time, but I like these 5 products! They are all reasonably-priced shirts now. :) (I didn't like the sticker quality.) They are all pretty much tshirts I want to own. That's why they're there. I will order them when I find a job.
(the shop is here, minamart.bigcartel.com)

Happy Easter fellow Zelda fans!!! I made a quick Easter egg themed painting. Toon Link took the little Windfish egg he found to the beach to make a mountain out of sand for it! I kind of like the whimsical quality of the piece!

LoZ - Euryhaline Zora & Coastal Rito Port Town
I have an idea for a new settlement in Hyrule.
This is a result of an adventurous Zora woman falling in love with an equally adventurous Lurelin man. However, both had desperately wanted children of their own, but obviously couldn't have them. Neither were opposed to adoption, but they still want what they want. Then the little Lurelin man remembers an ancient story of the Hero of Time.
And part of that story had been about a magical mask that could turn the wearer into a Zora. The story had spoken of a distant land across the sea to the east & falling into another world.
So, while not totally believing it, they figured that the journey would be worth it at least.
Anyway, they sort of commandeer a monster pirate ship, gather a crew, & set sail to lands long forgotten.
Only to discover a new land named New Hyrule, ruled by another Hylian Royal Family, where people rode along on long, metal carriages chained together, the one at the front seeming to billow out smoke, & moved down large minecart tracks. The people also seemed able to capture images with wooden boxes that produced those images on pieces of paper almost automatically. Not even the Purah Pad could do that & while not as advanced as the Pad, it seemed that these "Pictoboxes" were low-cost enough & made of cheap enough materials that a decent number of people could own one if they wished. They didn't even seem all that complicated to make if you knew how!
It was certainly a great surprise, as these individuals claimed that their ancestors had ventured there from the Great Sea in the west to found a new kingdom inspired by the old legends of a sleeping kingdom beneath the Great Sea.
The unlikely pair informed the king of the time that there was no Great Sea in that direction, only their home country of Hyrule, which was founded 10,000 years ago, which comes as a shock.
This is how it was discovered that the legendary kingdom was, in fact, real & that King Rauru had merely refounded a new iteration of the kingdom based on what was considered a myth at the time.
Anyway, this began the process of a new & great alliance.
Turns out that the 2 Hyrule Royal Families were indeed related by blood, though so distantly that it didn't even really matter anymore.
But that wasn't what the pair had come there for. They set off to find the doorway to another world & found it they did. They fell into the terrifying world & began to search high & low for the desired mask. Which this world was filled with. In the end, they found themselves aiding a number of people before acquiring the Zora Mask as a reward.
Anyway, the unique mixing of Termina's old Sea Zora with Hyrule's new River Zora results in euryhaline Zora able to survive in both the ocean & rivers.
Their appearance ends up resembling that of the Twilight Princess Zora, though with more color variation. Their main color remains that sort of silvery-blue or faded teal shade of the old Zora, but with vivid accent colors much like the new Zora. However, they do seem to retain the new Zoran sizes.
The males tend to have the more utilitarian webbed fins of the green River Zora, while the females tend to have more betta-like fins.
Tumblr media
A bit like this in style. Not my art. Though, with more variety of colors for the accents & following the specifics that I listed above.
These Zora later make a settlement on Eventide Island & create a new Domain called Koholint.
I'm also making Koholint a chain of islands much like Hawaii with Eventide being the smallest & closest to the mainland & their capital being on an island named Windfall. The other islands are Outset Island, Gale Island, Greatfish Island, & Dragon Roost Island. The domain is called Koholint, but the whole of the island chain are called the Koholina Archipelago. Koholina being the Lurelin word for "to choose joy."
Later, some human/Hylian Lurelin residents begin to live there, as well as a small faction of Rito that eventually adapt to the climate, becoming more water birds. They come to be known as Coastal Rito.
While the island's architecture resembles a mix of Zora's Domain, Rito Village, & Lurelin Village, with the commercial district & Rito & human/Hylian residences being on the island itself & the Zora's residences being underwater, the colors of the stonework resembles more the inside of the Face & Color Dungeons from the new Link's Awakening remake. With some definite influence from Lurelin & the Rito.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Zora homes will mostly retain a Zora's Domain architecture, but with definite influences from Hindu & coastal Greco-Roman design aesthetics. On the other hand, the island architecture will use more wood & take on the more Maori aesthetic with coastal Hindu influence. Though, both will have definite influences from each other. (I guess what I mean when I say Hindu inflence is a look like what you see with Skyward Sword's Ancient Cistern. So, some definite Buddhist influences. At least as far as design.)
They don't really have a king, more so a Chieftain as the culture there tends to take more influence from both the Rito & Lurelin, which both tend to be more tribal.
The overall result ends up being a mix of Polynesian, southern coastal Native American, & coastal Hindu with some ancient coastal Greco-Roman influence (even Atlantis-like) for the underwater sections of the settlement. As well as in their formal fashion. Though, again, even when showcasing these Greco-Roman features, they still showcase an overall fusion of the many cultural influences as a whole.
There'd likely also be a tiny bit of Caribbean & Okinawan inspiration in there too.
They'd also have various Polynesian weapons such as the mutitude of types of Lei'o'manō (sharktooth weapons) for a Lurelin weaponry. As well as stuff like an Ulimasao (paddle-club used to end wars & usher in peace) & an Aufana (bow). Not to mention fishing & hunting spears too.
Likewise, the Coastal Rito will have invented a wooden double-limbed bow called a Pālua Lima Pana. It is a high-performance bow with a lot of power behind it & was inspired by the bow used by Karina, the Goddess of Love & Passion. Who the Faronites refer to as Kalina.
Either way, I feel like they'd eventually become a fishing & port town.
