Hello! I happend upon your Hanafuda cards and was enchanted by the illustrations! but how exactly do you play Hanafuda? if it's okay, could you explain how the game works?
Hello! Thank you so much for liking my illustrations! It means a lot to me! I’d be happy to explain Hanafuda and the games you can play!
So first! Hanafuda is a type of deck of cards, not a specific game. It’s like how the English deck is used in Poker. They’re typically smaller in size than the average English deck, and they’re printed on thicker card stock. There’s a total of 48 cards in all, 12 suits in total with 4 cards in each. Each suit is known as a month, and each month is represented by a different flower (January = Matsu, February = Ume, March = Sakura, etc.). That’s why it’s called Hanafuda (花 = Flower 札 = Cards)!
The most popular game I’ve seen is Koi-koi being represented in video games and anime, but people play other things like Hachi-hachi, Roppyakken and Oicho-Kabu. Since I’m most familiar with the rules of Koi-koi, I’ll explain how the game works! I hope after this, you’ll want to play with your friends!
Koi-koi is played with 2 people, is a turn based game, and it gets its name from people shouting “Koi koi!” at the end of games (”Bring it on!”). One person acts as a dealer and shuffles the cards. Each person gets 8 cards, and 8 cards are placed on the table which I lovingly call the “house cards” but I don’t think anyone else does. Each turn consists of a player putting a card down from their hand, and drawing a card from the deck to put down. If the card you put down/card you drew matches a suit on the table already, you get both those cards and put them into a “score pile”.
The goal of Koi-koi is to form combinations of cards that get you the most points. Points are counted based on the type of combination you make. For example, the best combination you can get is called “5 Lights”, which is a combination of the Crane, the Curtain, the Full Moon, the Rainman, and the Pheonix. If you have these 5 cards in the score pile, then you win 20 points that round.
When you win a round, you have the option to call it quits, or keep going. If you chose to call it quits, then you win that round! And then they go onto the next round (called the next month).
If you want to keep playing and try to get more points, you say “Koi-koi!” Then the round can continue and you can try to add more combinations to your score pile. But watch out! That means your opponent also gets another turn too. And if they make a combination before you make one, then they “steal” the victory and get double the points. Back to that example from earlier. You had 5 Lights and earned 20 points, and you decide to be risky and call koi-koi. But then, it turns out, your opponent in the next round is able to create a smaller in point value combination, the “Red Ribbons”, earning them normally 5 points. However, because they stole your victory, their points are double, and they’re coming out with a cool 10 points while you don’t get anything.
How many rounds you play kind of depends, but the easiest thing to do would just be 3 rounds. You add all your points from the end of each round together, and whoever has the most points wins! Sometimes there’s gambling involved but that seems kind of overly complicated to explain.
Anyways! For what the combinations are, you can check out this guide! And for a better explanation of the rules of Koi-koi, if I did a really bad job. I hope this helps!

Flow, with updated colours. The blue just felt like it didn’t fit anymore, and I like this version better. All of my products have also been updated to this version.
