the past few days
over the past few days i've been wanting to crack open my laptop and start typing out the cacophony happening in my brain. (i understand the definition of this word, i can only half guess that my use of it is correct, so if it's wrong - shut up).
but of course, now that i've finally pulled the motivation out, nothing is coming to mind. even though i've experienced some big feelings all i can recall are as follows:
wanted to spend a full post talking about how a whole year begins, middles, and ends within the month of january at the pace that this month goes through. and i'm rigtht on this, so don't fight me.
wanted to have a full fledged pity party for myself as i do so often and title it "the path to hell is paved with good intentions". i would have started it off with "...and i think i'm walking that very path right now". it was going to be such a fun, self loathing sesh. but that's out of my system in the current moment. if summoned with even a little bit of effort, it would come running back, but WE ARE ADULTS AND WE ARE MOVING PAST IT.
so yasir is coming back tomorrow.
and i'm happy about it.
let's sit with that for a moment. i want to be brutally and totally honest with myself and I don't know if that brutality lies in the "fact" that i'm genuinely happy for myself that my husband is returning or that i'm overjoyed that i won't have to see esa hurting anymore.
frankly, if either of those are true....it would be a brutal honest thing. why couldn't i just be normal and have both of them be true, you ask?
maybe [queue gasp] I AM NORMAL and both of those ARE TRUE.
but to get to the bottom of that....i'm going to take a pause. you won't obviously experience it as you read it, but future komal, i want you to know that you stopped typing, closed your eyes, and TRULY contemplated which of those 3 scenarios were the most true for you. now.
okay. i've sat with my feelings and my truth and i've thought about it. and here it is:
as people have been asking how i'm feeling and if i'm excited for yasir to be coming back tomorrow, i've been responding with "yes!", "so ecstatic", general happiness and merriment.
i've even given thought to how i will greet him. will i run up to him and give him a kiss on his forehead? but that will of course break my heart because he will immediately pull away and push me away since that's probably the most embarassing scenario that could happen to him.
will i walk up non chalantly and give him a fist bump? to spite his family because supposedly they would make so much fun of his stupid wife's pda-ing ways so that will give them something to talk about?
as you can see, the crazy juices have been running on full gear.
i think....truly, and honestly, i haven't decided. maybe there will be a lot of commotion at the airport and i'll be generally handling esa so i won't be able to react much to him returning.
but the fact is....i think i want to kiss him. and hug him. and feel him reciprocate it. i want to action these things that i know will return in sort of a heartbreak for me, because....because what? i think i'm seeking validation? i think, most of all....i'm seeking his love.
i'm seeking a feeling of knowing that he will hug me back despite how embarrassed he might feel. that he will give me the love the way i want to receive it despite that giving me something the way i want goes against every single principle that he upholds in his adult life.
so i guess the question becomes - do i really want him to hug me and kiss me back? or do i want to see that he could? am i seeking the wrong sort of love? am i seeking it for the wrong intentions?
i don't know. all i know is...i would like to experience it.
but i think 2 months - the duration of him being away - is not really a long enough time for him to show me love as if he's just seeing us against after years and years of separation.
so....here's my resolution for tomorrow. i will respectfully and happily welcome him back. i will be happy about it. but i will not show my happiness at the cost of my heartache. i will not hug him or kiss him (unless he initiates it, but do i even need to say that bit out loud?) because i don't know how much more i can continue to make myself open and vulnerable to this man who...cares for so much more beyond me and his consideration of me.
and that might sound like it's coming off resentful - and maybe it was 2 months ago when i was living it. but now, it's really just fact.
that's not to say that it won't become resentment again tomorrow or the day after or the day after.
the heart is a fickle fickle thing.
ANYWAY. that's that. now onto true and genuine feelings that i can express and i won't be broken hearted or vulnerable in expressing.
but even as i'm about to type this out, there is doubt creeping into my mind about the truthfulness of my belief. anyway. i was going to say....i will be so happy to have esa see his father tomorrow.
i've not done right by esa i think. when i got mad at him and yelled any time during the past 2 months - he asked for his baba. and how come i'm still the person carrying this guilt? i was there, i was present, i was an asshole parent who yelled at her kid but i was there goddammit. so how come this guilt isn't going away?
anyway. i'm just a big open wound over here.
i'm going to stop. i should get some sleep tonight otherwise who's going to overthink all of this tomorrow.
goodnight.

24 Years of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai: Rakesh Roshan talks about the challenge of shooting the cruise scenes; reveals how he calmed down irate passengers: “Our dancers put up a wonderful show; I even told the captain to serve them liquor on my account”
Hrithik Roshan, who turned 50 on January 10, completes 24 years in the industry today. His debut film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, was released on this very day, January 14, 2000. It went on to become that year’s biggest hit, collecting Rs. 44.27 crores. Hrithik’s popularity and dashing looks attracted the audience into cinemas in hordes but what also worked was that the film had a great story to tell and was aided by chartbuster songs. The cruise track was entertaining and shoot-wise, the layman might not have considered it a challenge. However, executing this track was a herculean task and director Rakesh Roshan pulled it off due to a tremendous amount of planning in advance. The blockbuster filmmaker spoke about this in detail in an interview to Komal Nahta’s Film Information magazine dated December 5, 1998.
Tumblr media
Rakesh Roshan revealed in this interview that he opted for the Star Clipper cruise as it seemed ideal for his shoot and didn't look like a 5-star hotel in the sea. The plan was to shoot for 22 days, which included 9 days on the ship in the middle of the ocean with a unit of 85 people. He said, “Given the logistics involved, only an insane person would embark on such a shooting without due planning. Hence, I spent months working out the nitty gritties of the shooting schedule and only when I was certain that nothing could go wrong did I finally begin shooting.”
Rakesh Roshan also added in the beginning that he just didn't arrange the requirements for the shooting but also kept in mind any trouble that might crop up during the shoot and how to counter it. After his request, Star Clipper had a stopover in Mumbai, on October 29. Rakesh took the shots of people boarding the ship and also loaded the equipment. This is when he realized that while his equipment needed a 220-volt power supply, the power fixtures fitted on the ship were designed for an electrical supply of 110 volts, which is standard in the USA. The stopover in Mumbai helped him address this issue. He got a custom-made generator set and also loaded it on the ship. Rakesh Roshan then revealed, “On November 6, my entire unit and I flew to Colombo and boarded Star Clipper from there. The entire contingent of 82 people, including 35 dancers, could cause quite a commotion, especially if they are shooting. The passengers on the ship began to get a little irritable and understandably so, as they were there on holiday and our activity was robbing some of their pleasure. I had envisaged that something like this might occur and hence had told my dancers to be ready to bail us out if need be. So, on day 2, I asked the ship’s captain to announce a special entertainment programme for the passengers. Our dancers and artists put up such a wonderful show that our fellow passengers just couldn’t help having a great time. I even told the captain to serve them liquor on my account. In my own small way, I was asking them to bear with us for a few days and most of the passengers appreciated the gesture. They loved Indian music and dance so much that they requested us for repeat performances on subsequent nights. We obliged and soon found most of the passengers beginning to get really excited about our shooting. They became so co-operative that when it rained a couple of days later and we were forced to shoot indoors in the bar area (one of the most popular spots on the ship), everyone cleared the place for us without even a grumble.”
Once the on-board issues were solved, Rakesh Roshan successfully overcame other challenges too. He had to shoot aerial shots of the ship while it was in the middle of the sea. These were the days when there was no drone and the director had to shoot it from a helicopter. The nearest centre that offered a helicopter on hire was Bangkok, five hours away.
Rakesh Roshan stated, “On my trip to Bangkok prior to the shooting, I had worked out the problem by locating the small island of Maiton which was situated nearer to Bangkok. I also surveyed the island and found a suitable place where a helicopter could land in the absence of a helipad. Having done this much, all that remained to be done was to inform the helicopter crew about the exact time Star Clipper would sail past Maiton, so they could make all preparations for the aerial shooting. I found out from the captain that our ship would pass Maiton at 6 am on November 13. Accordingly, I instructed the helicopter crew to reach Maiton by the 12th evening and start preparing. On the other hand, since I was to be in the helicopter during the shooting, I left detailed instructions for the shots with choreographer Farah Khan who would be handling things during my temporary absence. Come 13th morning and we all had our fingers crossed. With no other communication with the helicopter crew since issuing instructions, we just prayed that everything would go as planned. And sure enough, we spotted our helicopter at the precise hour. Just as Star Clipper neared Maiton, Kabir Laal (cameraman) and I got onto a speed boat and left for the island. When he reached ashore, we found the helicopter crew waiting in all readiness. We quickly got into the helicopter and took off. After gaining the required height, I signalled to Farah Khan that we were ready to take the shot. She positioned everyone as per my prior instructions. One by one, we canned all the required shots in quick succession and landed back on Maiton. Now, we had to get back aboard Star Clipper which had sailed quite a distance past Maiton. We got onto the speed boat again and raced after the ship. It took us nearly four hours to locate Star Clipper and finally, we boarded it again. We reached Phuket the next day."
Rakesh Roshan also credited the captain of the ship in this interview, “He extended all possible help to us during the shooting. At the very outset, he had told me, ‘Rakkkesh, do what you want, just don’t sink the ship!’” In the film’s beginning slides, Miss Anjie McFarlane, Captain Jurgan and Captain Shamim have been duly thanked.
The sequence where Hrithik Roshan and Ameesha Patel’s characters are marooned where shot at Krabi Island near Phuket, Thailand. Rakesh Roshan also shot for the underwater scene here, which was presumably the one where Rohit (Hrithik Roshan) is killed in an accident.
On this, Rakesh Roshan said, “The underwater shots were very tricky in the sense that Hrithik had to remain 30 ft. under the sea for nearly 45 minutes. Before the shots, a trained diving instructor explained the basics of diving to Hrithik — things like how to use the oxygen mask and so on. Fortunately, Hrithik had undergone a scuba diving course in Miami, USA, just for a lark a few months ago. So, he caught on pretty fast. Yet, at the end of the entire underwater sequence, I felt proud of Hrithik. Remaining underwater for so long required a great deal of guts more than anything else as anything could have gone wrong at any time."
Rakesh Roshan signed off by exulting, “Unlike some of our other directors, who claimed to have spent 15 crores on their film, even 50% of which didn’t show in it, in KNPH, you will be able to see every single penny I have spent on the film. There is absolutely no wastage in my film.”

'Last month, the eagerly awaited film Oppenheimer achieved an impressive feat by selling tickets with prices soaring as high as ₹2,450 (per ticket). In fact, many theatres across India had early morning shows around 3am, and they, too, were sold out despite the high prices. In Delhi, tickets to watch director Christopher Nolan’s movie in 2D were sold at ₹2,000 each. Last year, James Cameron’s Avatar: Way of Water also tickets art a similar price. Even Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One saw an unusually higher ticket price.
These incident seem to suggest a noteworthy change in audience preferences towards a premium cinema experience. We ask cinema owners and trade experts to share insights into the driving factors behind this change, evolving preferences of moviegoers in the realm of cinema and if the same can be expected with upcoming Indian films like Jawaan, Salaar, Animal and other big-ticket films lined-up for release.
Kamal Gianchandani, CEO PVRINOX Pictures
Audiences preferring premium formats to enjoy their favourite film at cinemas is a growing trend. We’ve been observing this for the last several year, and therefore, we’ve invested in new formats and in upgrading our cinemas at every given opportunity. Our producers are also noticing this trend, which is why you’re seeing increasing number of films being released in multiple formats. We believe this trend is here to stay.
Devang Sampat, CEO at Cinepolis India
The advance ticket bookings for Oppenheimer proved that Indians prioritise exceptional storytelling and unforgettable cinematic journeys. It showed that true enthusiasts still cherish and prefer the unbeatable cinematic experience on the big screen, and will pay the price for it...
Girish Johar, Producer and Trade Analyst
Nolan is the number one director at this moment, and a film connoisseur understands the value he brings to a story. The reason why Oppenhemier’s tickets are selling like a hot cake and people are going crazy is the content he brings on to the screen. But when we say that people are moving towards the premium cinema experience, we are talking about only a section. The uber premium metro audience is who watches films like Oppenheimer and have a spending power...
Taran Adarsh, Trade Expert
Audience would react more positively and would enjoy a premium experience when Shah Rukh Khan will come with Jawaan and Dunki, or Prabhas with Salaar or Ranbir Kapoor with Animal. These are eventful and I am sure they will receive the same treatment as Oppenhemier. It all depends on the hype, which as of now is tremendous. There is a movement towards premium experience but only in select areas.
Akshaye Rathi, Film exhibitor and Distributer
Oppenhemier’s premium ticket price rates and the fact that even those were sold out for early morning shows, is testimony to the fact that it’s all about the entertainment value that you provide to consumers. If it’s worthy of their time, money and effort, all sorts of things will do well. Moreover, when it comes to the theatrical medium, movies that have either that cinematic spectacular value or immersive viewing experiences or collective viewing experiences, you will always see people choosing cinema halls as the preferred medium of consumption and paying any price for it. But having said that, these big screen spectacles always have an added edge.
Komal Nahta , Trade Expert
With films like Oppenheimer or the upcoming ones like Jawaan, I don’t think people will have a problem in paying high prices for tickets. The reason is the premium value attached to these releases. I know that people across the country have been complaining about the high prices of the tickets and want it to come down to ₹100-120 from 250-300 in multiplexes. However, having premium shows in a couple of theatres, depending on what movie it is, is not a bad idea. In fact, it’s liked by people.'

“taylor swift is releasing new music!!!!” honestly who cares there’s a literal genocide going on in the world that she refuses to speak up on despite knowing she has so much power and influence but she’s dropping an album likely to bully her ex? her activism is so performative and she will only speak up on things that somehow benefit her

Flipped (2010) is not just a movie, it is an emotion for someone who had a childhood friend of the opposite gender and grew up seeing each other a lot or maybe lived across the street. I had a friend, he is alive, but we are not on talking terms anymore. Maybe, I had a crush on him. And for a year maybe he had a crush on me too (but this is just my assumption). I remember once someone told me that he made a girlfriend because he wanted to see the world from a female’s perspective. In 2021, I was upset about a lot of things. That year contributed a lot to my mental growth. I was a kid basically, but then the epiphany hit me hard. It also made me realize how much I have missed out on, by not staying friends with my childhood friends. All three of them grew up with each other, learned things from each other, shared things with each other, and taught each other. I had no one. I was alone. I also wanted to see things with their perception. But they had banished me from their group. We (mostly it was always me vs them) had several fights and arguments about every little thing. They made fun of me almost my entire school life. I made fun of them too. But what was I supposed to do? I was lonely. I was petrified. I was insulted by them. God knows what else they used to say about me.
I will never ever forgive them, for what they made me go through. We all grew up watching each other’s abilities, marks, height, etc. We all were the victim of our parents’ torment of being constantly compared with each other. We all felt humiliated by that in every way. I want to address this one day with my parents and their friends. Because I did lose lots of people in that process.
I tried to make up with Sujay but he always dismissed the idea of being friends with me. I will never understand why. It was 2013 when we last chatted with each other. It will be 10 years in April this year. I can see his room from my terrace. And I am sure he can see mine. I wonder if he ever thinks about me. Does he have a memory of how he took care of me for the first few years when we both got admitted to the same school? He was my first choice to go with when I had to distribute the toffee to the other teachers on my birthday. Does he often recall the moment when we used to play ‘ghar-ghar’. He was really a sensible child then. We even sat together in the fifth standard. We used to talk a lot after our 'tuition with komal didi'. We went to the same school van, class, and tuitions all our school lives. I wonder if he thinks about me. He is doing great in his life.
