Love in the Dead

Chapter 1: Beginning of the Dead

Under a cherry blossom tree stood a boy with brown hair and a girl with orange hair. They linked their pinkies together and made a promise. When we're older we'll get married. Standing a few feet away was their friend. She clutched the flower crown in her hand and looked towards the ground. Tears welled in her eyes as she tried to hold them in. She knew they liked each other but she still had hope the boy would like her more than her friend. Unable to hold them back any longer she watched as her tears dropped onto the ground. She remembers making a similar promise with him under the same tree. We'll be together forever. Though it hurt to know her affections would not be returned she realized as long as he was in her life she didn't care. She smiled and began running towards them wanting to show them her flower crown.

For years she watched as her friends' feelings grew for each other. In those years she became better at hiding her feelings for the boy. She could see they loved each other but apparently not enough since the boy was reluctant to ask her out. Sadly, the girl's best friend was held back, having to repeat their second year. The boy and the girl wondered why she was held back. She was smart and a straight A student. They were concerned and confronted her about the situation. The girl just replied with one comment. You just wouldn't understand. He and the girl couldn't believe the words she uttered. Instead of pestering her they decided to give her space. But as the girl's best friend drifted from the group she found herself and the boy becoming closer. By the end of their first year the boy and the girl were a couple.

The girl was ecstatic to finally be with the boy, but she couldn't say the same for him. They were fine when they started dating but she began to notice the changes in the start of their second year. She wasn't in the same class as him sadly but, at least he had his best friend there and she came by everyday to eat lunch with him. That's when she noticed her best friend and his best friend were getting close two each other. She was happy for them and she thought he would be too. Unfortunately, she was wrong. The lingering stares. Sadness and longing in his eyes. She chose to ignore it at first. The girl just wanted to be blind to love even though she could see it hurt him when the two got together. All she could do was pat his shoulder and repeat the promise they made together when they were younger, we'll be together forever.

The boy sighed as he reminisced about the promise he made with the orange haired girl and muttered, "Pinky promise. If you lie I'll make you swallow a thousand needles." He was leaning on the stair railing looking at the clouds. He thought back to the conversation he had with his girlfriend.

He sat laid on his bed with his arms behind his head and legs crossed. He had school tomorrow and of course, as the high school student he was, he dreaded it. Slowly, he began to get lost in his thoughts when his phone rang. He got up, walked over to his desk, and grabbed his phone. Not bothering to look at the caller I.D. he answered it with a hello.

"Hey, Taka-chan! I'm bored so I wanna talk to you." The girl said happily. 'Taka-chan' walked back over to his bed and laid down. "You called me just because you were bored?"

The girl nodded then realizing he couldn't see her giggled saying yes. He rolled his eyes at her bubbly character. He always wondered how she was able to be happy all the time no matter the situation. When Rei started ignoring him she was there with a smile on her face ready to cheer him up. He didn't know that her bubbly personality came from her love for him.

Ever since they were young she loved him. She wanted to confess to him for a long time but when she found out that he loved Rei and Rei loved him she stepped aside so they could be together. Never in her wildest dreams did you believe that instead they would be a couple. She rolled over onto her stomach with her legs swinging behind her. "So Taka-chan what are you doing?"

"Talking on the phone with you." He replied.

She rolled her eyes. "Komuro Takashi, the same ol' smartass. Okay fine, you try to find a topic to discuss." She sassed back.

He tapped his chin with his finger. "Did you do the homework for school tomorrow?"

She knew why he asked that question. Typical Takashi. "Yes and no you can't copy it." "Aww come on Kon. You always let me before, why not now?" He said sitting up.'

Kon' pouted. "Because you need to do it on your own. You can't keep copying off me, Taka-chan." She shook her head in disappointment. "To understand the material one must do the material."

He chuckled under his breath. She always tried to teach him a lesson whether it be doing homework or eating properly. Sometimes he feels like she's his mother and not his girlfriend. He started to wonder if Rei would have been like this. Would she be telling him to do his homework? Would she stay up with him on the phone? He bet she would have scolded him for not doing it then came over to help him with it. He depressedly sighed into the phone.

Maikoni opened her mouth to say something but paused when she heard him sigh. She knew that sigh anywhere. Something she said made him think of Rei. Was not jealous that her boyfriend was thinking of her best friend while talking to her? No. Upset? No. Sad? Surprisingly no. At that moment she felt numb. All she wanted was for him to return her love. She closed her eyes and plastered a fake smile on her face.

"Taka-chan what are you sighing about? Sad I won't let you copy my homework." She said cheerfully.

Her voice snapped in out of his daydream. He shook his head trying to rid his thoughts of Rei. "I'm just thinking about stuff." Takashi knew he should be paying more attention to her but he just couldn't. She is sweet, funny, smart, talented, and athletic but she isn't Rei. He doesn't even know why he's trying to hang on to this relationship in the first place.

"Well don't think too hard. Gotta use some of that brain for your homework." She could feel him roll his eyes through the phone as he muttered "okay".

Awkward silence hung between the couple. Neither one knew what to say to the other. While one thought about someone else the other thought about their relationship. She thought about how long she would be able to keep her facade. Should she break up with him? She immediately shook her head. No she didn't want that. She knew they would get past this or at least she hoped.

The light brown haired girl spoke softly into the phone. "Hey Takashi. You love me right?" Takashi's eyes slowly widened. She rarely called him by his name, only when she's serious. His mouth opened to speak but no words came out. Did he love her? He probably did but not as much as Rei. One minute passed but he still couldn't answer. Instead Maikoni answered for him. "It's okay if you don't. I just thought you would but it's okay. Just know I love you."

Takashi closed his mouth and balled his hand. He didn't deserve her. He knows but he continues to give her hope. Maybe one day he'll be able to say it back to her. Maybe one day he'll move on from Rei and treat her the way she deserves to be treated. He could only wonder.

Kon stared at her ceiling. "Hey Taka-chan. What do you think will happen in the future? I think something exciting will happen." She said.

Takashi thought about what she said. Then he thought about the promise he made with Rei. He wanted to say he'd marry Rei but stopped. You two just got off the depressing stuff and he didn't want to go back. His girlfriend was about to call out to him until he spoke. "I'll marry you." He finally said before he realized his mistake. He didn't want to tell you that but it just happened.

The girl smiled wistfully. She knew who he really wanted to marry but decided to pretend he really meant it. "I'll hold you to that. But really Taka-chan think outside the box. What if the sky falls or..." she tapped her chin thinking then snapped her fingers. "... I know! What if zombies roamed the earth? What would you do?"

He chuckled. She always came up with ridiculous scenarios. "Obviously I'll fight them and protect my family and friends. What about you?" He asked.

"The same, of course." She said giggling. Her giggling died down. "Hey Takashi, if that does happen you'll never leave me right?"

When he didn't answer she grew worried. Was he fed up with her? Tears glistened in the corner of his eyes. Together forever that's what they promise. Even though their relationship was rocky she hoped he still kept their promise. Was it about to be broken?

"Maikoni, of course I'll never leave you. We promised right? Together forever."

Maikoni sniffed and smiled. "Yeah you're right." She yawned into the phone and rubbed her eyes. "Ne, Taka-chan I'm sleepy. Nighty night."

He glanced at his clock. It was almost two o'clock. "Alright get some sleep. I'll talk to you tomorrow at school." He said.

She nodded into the phone. "Yeah." She said then hung up the phone and went to sleep.

Takashi stared at his phone and smiled. While he couldn't say he loved her like she did him at least he knew he had to protect her. He looked at his ceiling letting his eyes slowly close and falling asleep.

Takashi was so into his thoughts he didn't notice his classmate walking up the stairs towards him. "That's so stupid." she said.

He gave her a glance out the corner of his eye. "Takagi?" He asked, leaning on the railing. She put her hands on her hips. "Every time you have to face something you don't like you always escape to the same place. That's so elementary school." She walked towards him and leaned forward a bit. "Look at you, the first semester has just started. You better get ready for supplemental studies let alone repeating a grade. "

He turned towards her as she talked. He glanced down her shirt and looked at her breasts then turned his head. "I could say the same for you. The fifth period isn't even over yet." He said.

"It's okay because I'm a genius unlike you who got in this school by dumb luck, Komuro."

"Takagi, why do you always diss me like that?" He asked.

She crossed her arms. "Because I don't like stupid people."

"What?"

"Especially the one who can't admit they're stupid. You're stupid by at least you know you are. So if I tell you that you're stupid maybe you'll be less stupid, stupid. Huh?" She noticed Takashi turned away from her and leaned onto the railing, sighing. "What's the deal? Just because you got dumped by your childhood friend." She turned away. "That's stupid." She muttered and walked back down the stairs.

He didn't reply back. A sad expression made its way onto his face. She was right. He was sad that Rei didn't return his feelings. She told him she felt that way at one point but he didn't notice. He was still hurting from that but at the same time he thought about Maikoni and what they talked about last night. He meant what he said about never leaving her and protecting her. He would be keeping their promise no matter what.

Speaking of the girl, Maikoni, she was making her way up the stairs. She met Takagi on the way up and they both stopped. "I'm assuming he's up there?" She asked the pink haired girl. Takagi looked at the way she just came then to the girl. "Yep. He's moping about the girl that dumped him." She crossed her arms. "I don't know what you see in him. He's stupid and moping around recently. It's irritating."

Maikoni chuckled. "There's more to him than just that." She continued her way up the stairs as she waved slightly to the pinkette. "I'll see you later, Takagi."

Takagi huffed and continued to walk down the stairs. She wanted to call Maikoni an idiot but seeing as she is number two in ranking she couldn't. Well with dealing with Takashi she would always call her stupid.

Maikoni spotted him in the same position he was in when Takagi left. She slowly inched her way towards him and hugged him from behind. He jumped a bit in surprise and turned his head slightly to see the culprit.

"Found you, Taka-chan." She nuzzled more into his back. "I heard from Takagi that you were moping about Rei again."

He turned his head away from her. After what happened last night he didn't want her to hear about that. He thought she would get mad or be sad, considering she was his current girlfriend, but it was the opposite. She let go of him then grabbed his face slowly turning him towards her. He stared at her in shock. She was smiling at him. It was that smile of hers that enchants all who see.

Slowly she stood on her tip toes and lightly brushed her lips against his. "Taka-chan it's okay. I understand that you loved Rei and it's hard to see her in Hisashi's arms and not yours. I know that as your girlfriend you feel I should be mad but I can't. Even though we all grew up together and we both loved you, you picked Rei and I know she holds a place in your heart. I just want you to know that I'm here for you." She turned away from him ready to head back to her class. As she descended down the steps she could hear Takashi mutter, "I really don't deserve you." Takashi turned towards the gate leaning on the railing once again. He thought about what Rei told him the day she stopped talking to him. She told him that she couldn't deal with him anymore. Rattling was heard at the front gate.

Takashi gazed at the gate. "Who's that? Someone suspicious?" He asked himself.

At the gate was a man mindlessly banging himself into the gate. He watched as four of the school teachers walked towards the gate.

The female teacher pushed up her glasses. "What do you want? Don't do anything strange. " The man stopped banging his body on the gate.

One of the male teachers stepped in front of her. "Don't worry Ms. Hayashi, I'll handle this." He walks towards the man outside the gate then grabs his collar and yanks him into the gate. Ms. Hayashi looked frightened. "Wait, Mr. Teshima excessive violence is-" She paused talking and watched as the man grabbed Mr. Teshima's arm and bite into it causing blood to squirt. Mr. Teshima falls to the ground squirming as the man lets his arm go. She walks towards him with the other two teachers. Mr. Teshima fell to the ground dead with his eyes open.

"Oh my god he's dead." said the old male teacher.

Ms. Hayashi brought her hands to her face covering her mouth. "No way. From this kind of wound." She trailed off while watching his eyes close. Ms. Hayashi then gasped when she saw his hand twitch. "Mr. Teshima? Are you alright?"

Mr. Teshima's eyes reopened. She leaned over him smiling. "Oh Mr. Teshima thank god. You had me worried there for a..." Before she could finish her sentence Mr. Teshima grabbed the top of her shirt and lifted himself up while opening his mouth. When she was close enough he bit into her neck. Blood gushed into the air as her scream filled the air.

Takashi took a step backwards in shock and fear. He didn't believe what he just saw. He watched both the teachers, who were bitten, slowly make their way towards the other two teachers. He turned around and raced up the stairs with one thing on his mind. Rei. He needed to save her and make sure she's safe. He pushed the door leading to the hallway opened and ran towards her classroom. The class was silenced by the sound of the door slamming open.

"Komuro you couldn't be happy with just skipping my class? Now you're interrupting class?!" The teacher asked.

He ignored the teacher's question and walked towards his goal. He stopped in front of Rei's desk. "Come with me. We're going to get out of here." He demanded as he grabbed her arm and jerked her out of her seat.

Rei blushed. "Wha- What are you talking about?" She said startled. Takagi slammed her hands on the desk whilst standing up.

Hisashi walked towards them. "What is this all about, Takashi?"

Takashi turned to look at him. "Some people were just killed near the school gate. This is bad."

Hisashi jolted in shock. "Are you serious?"

"What do I gain by telling a lie like that?"

Rei pulled her arm from his hand. "Jeez! What's going on! I can never understand what's going on in your he-" She gasped as Takashi slapped her. She held her cheek and glared at him. "Wha"

"Just listen to me!" He yelled, interrupting her. He turned to look at Hisashi. Hisashi looked at him in shock then determination. Takashi turned around and left with Rei and Hisashi behind him. "Tell me what's going on!" Rei demanded.

"There was someone at the gate. The P.E. teachers went to check it out and something happened. And now those P.E. teachers are killing each other. " Rei shook her head. "That's insane."

They walked towards a janitor's locker and opened it. Takashi looked at Hisashi. "What? You forgot something?" Hisashi began rummaging through it until he came across a broom. "If what you told me is true, we're in need of weapons, right?" He grabbed a broom, broke the handle off, and handed it to Rei. Takashi found a student's bag with a baseball bat and grabbed it.

Takashi looked to see his best friend didn't have a weapon. "What about you?" Hasashi smirked. "I know I don't look it, but I've got a black belt in Karate. Anyway, let's get out of the school."

"Let's call the police. My dad is there too." Rei reasoned. Takashi pulled out his phone and gave it to her. "School rules are made to be broken, right?" She dialed the number and waited for him to pick up.

Hisashi looked at Takashi. "What about Maikoni?" Takashi glazed at him then looked at Rei. "She'll be fine. Rei is more important right now."

He shook his head. "After Rei's done, call her. I'm sure you don't want her getting hurt." As the two boys were having their conversation the line finally connected. Rei's eyes widened as she listened to the automatic voicemail. "No way."

They stopped their talk to look at her. "What's wrong?" She ignored them as she continued to listen to the machine. Her eyes were filled with fear. "110 is busy? That's impossible." Just as she took the phone away from her ear an announcement began.

"This announcement is for all students. A violent incident is taking place inside the school right now! All students must follow your teacher's instructions and evacuate. I repeat . a violent incident is taking place inside the school right now. All students must follow your teacher's instructions and.."

The announcement suddenly stopped. Each student waited anxiously wondering what happened. Maikoni gripped the ends of her desk as she waited. The only thing on her mind was finding Takashi. The announcer began to scream for help. Maikoni slowly got up from her desk while everyone was distracted, grabbed her wooden sword and made her way to the door and out the classroom. The moment the announcer screamed for help she knew what was going to happen. Once the screams stopped silence filled the school once more. All it took was a piece of chalk to fall for the stampede to start.

The students were pushing and shoving each other. Some were punching and trampling over other students. Others were yanking hair and tripping down the stairs. Maikoni was running away from the students while trying to call Takashi. She was scared. What the hell was going on? Where is Takashi? She tried calling and texting him but he wasn't answering. She stared down at her phone to send Takashi another text when she bumped into somebody. She fell down and dropped her phone.

"Ah that hurt." She looked up to see what knocked her over. Her face twisted into horror at the male student in front of her. His skin was gray, blood on his clothes, a bite mark on his neck, and milky eyes. He looked dead, kind of like a zombie. She didn't know if he could see her or not. Slowly she began to back away for him. Before she could get away he grabbed her ankle and pulled her towards him. A loud scream left her mouth as he dragged her. His mouth was wide open ready to take a bite. Her pupils shrink in fear. She used her free leg to kick him in the face but he didn't let go. Tears filled the corners of her eyes. Was this it? Is this how she dies? She didn't want to die. The student managed to grab her other leg. Fear froze her body. She was paralyzed and shaking. What did her mother tell her? Take your fear and use it as strength? That's right. She was a member of the Hoshiyama clan and they take pride in their strength. Clenching her jaw she tightened her grip on her wooden sword, raised it over her head and struck his head while using the momentum to sit up. The student let go of her legs and she managed to get away and stand up. She looked down at him in sorrow. Even though is most likely dead he was still a person, but her will to survive overpowered. She continuously struck his head until he no longer moved. Her wild eyes look down at the body as she tries to calm her breathing. The only thing on her mind was the student she killed. She kept telling herself he was already dead but it didn't help.

Still in a daze Maikoni heard buzzing in the air. She turned her head to the right and saw her phone on the ground making the noise. She walked over to it and picked it up. As she grabbed it the buzzing stopped. Just as she was about to open it the buzzing began once more. She opened it and pressed the call button.

"Hello?" She spoke softly.

She heard rustling over the phone before someone spoke. "Kon?! Where are you?"

"Takashi? I'm by the classrooms. Where are you? What's happening? I just killed a person!" Her breathing began to pick up as she glanced at the body behind her. Takashi looked at the body of his best friend. He knew how she felt but know wasn't the time to mourn. "Listen to me. You didn't kill anyone. They were already dead and it was either you and them. Right now I'm with Rei. I'm..."

She cut him off. "Rei? If she's with you, where's Hisashi? He should be there too." She began walking down the hall in hopes of finding someone.

The brunette male sighed. "Hisashi... he didn't make it. He got bit." Static filled her ears at the news. Hisashi died. How is Rei right now? How was he feeling right now? She gripped her phone tighter. We can't think about feelings right now. We have to think about getting out of here.

"I'm sorry. I can gather what happened by your tone. Listen, if Rei is with you that means she's safe. The way I see it's a slim chance of us finding each other. You guys find a way out and I'll find my way out. If we cross paths then that's great. If not then take care of Rei and take care of yourself. Also remember I love you, Taka-chan." Before he could answer I hung up. The dial tone suffocated him. Maikoni sounded as if she was saying goodbye to him but that's not right. She couldn't say goodbye just yet. He promised he would protect her. He promised he would be there for her. He couldn't be either. She was alone protecting herself from 'them'. He took the phone from his ear and put it away then set down to rest.

Love in the Dead

Chapter 2: Escape the Dead

The entrance to the roof was barricaded by tables. Rei hugged her legs and Takashi stared absentmindedly at Hisashi's body, thinking back to what happened a few minutes before.

Hisashi smiles sadly at Takashi. " Come on, Takashi, do it for me. I want to stay myself until the last moment." Takashi's grip on the baseball bat tightened while Rei yelled in the background. "Don't do it! He's not turning into one of them. Stop!"

Screaming, he ran towards Hisashi and smashed his head.

Takashi's eyes opened in fright. He didn't even realize he closed his eyes. Rei turned her head towards him. "What's the matter?" She asked.

"I was wondering what the hell is going on." He replied, still looking at his best friend's dead body.

"That's a straightforward answer." she whispered.

"What's the point of lying anyway." He scratched his head.

Rei smiled at him and stood up. "I think I'm going to call my dad." She held out her hand. "Let me use your cell phone."

He stared at his phone for a moment thinking about Maikoni then handed it to her. "I understand that he's a police officer, but we can't even connect 110."

She began to dial the number. "I know this secret number that he told me not to call unless it's an emergency." The phone rang for a few seconds then connected. "I got through. Dad?!"

On the other end Rei's father spoke. "Hello! This number is Takashi's?"

Rei held the phone with both hands. "Dad? Hey, Dad, we're at school and-" He father cut her off. "Takashi? You must have got this number from Rei. Is Rei okay?" The phone slowly began to break up. "Dad, can't you hear my voice?" Her father began to speak. "Listen carefully, the city is in a panic now! You need to get out of there!" Rei kept calling out to her dad but he couldn't hear her. A gunshot sounded in the background which made Rei and Takashi flinch. "You hear me! The city is already in panic mode! You need to evacuate as soon as possible!"

Before she could say anything the phone call was cut. In shock she pulled the phone from her ear and looked at it. "No service. But I just called him. Why? Why?!" Takashi called out to her. She turned her head towards him. He was shocked to see tears streaming down her face. "Takashi... my dad... he didn't know it was me at all."

Maikoni continued to walk down the hallway, dragging her bloody wooden sword. Her eyes glazed over as she thought back to the person she killed. Why did this have to happen? This was supposed to be a normal day. She was going to ask Takashi to go to the bookstore with her and get the new volume of Chrome Shelled Regios. She thought back to her talk with Takashi. When she asked him about the future. When she asked him what would happen if zombies roamed the earth. She didn't think it would really happen but here she is living through it.

The hallway was empty for the most part. Just dead students lying on the floor. Her ears picked up a bunch of groaning. Lifting her head she spotted a dozen of 'them' banging on the door of a classroom. Before she could turn around, to head the other way, she heard someone yelling no. Blue eyes slowly widened as she came to recognize the voice. "TAKAGI!" A few of 'them' turned when she yelled but Maikoni was already in front of them and striking their heads. Blood covered her face but she didn't care. Her main concern was getting to Takagi.

A nail flew past Takagi and into one of the zombies head. Hirano smiled sadistically. "Gotcha!" Takagi looked behind her in shock. "H-Hirano?"

Takashi and Rei grab the water hose. He turned to Rei. "Are you ready?" Rei, while holding the valve nodded. "Yeah!"

He pointed the hose towards the zombies trying to break the barricade. "Now turn it!" She began to turn the valve. The pressure of the water made Takashi slightly loose control. "Damn!" He tilted the hose, spraying the railing.

Shot after shot, each nail being shot was impaled into a head. "You see the drill and nails over there? Will you put them in a bag or something?" Takagi eyebrows twitched. She balled his fists and yelled at him. "What's your deal? You're a nobody to me. What makes you think you can order me around?"

Hirano turns to look at her. His face was the face of a deranged man having fun. She slightly jumped in shock. In a matter of milliseconds his attitude changed into a shy one. "Please?" Takagi looked at him in disbelief then slumped and looked at him in defeat. "Alright."

Maikoni slammed her wooden sword into another zombie's head, unaware of one sneaking behind her. She felt a hand on her arm. Her head turned to see who grabbed her. A pale, grey face was inches from her face. Her heart began to beat faster as her eyes widened. Was this it? Was she going to die here? Takashi appeared in her mind. Then Rei. Why was she here in the first place? She should have just ran and found a group to help her. Maybe if she did then she wouldn't have to fight or worry about surviving. Fight and survive. Use your fear as strength. Her family motto appeared in her head once more. Who was I fighting for? Why did I come here to fight? A certain pinkette appeared in her mind. Takagi. She was going to save Takagi. Her forgotten fire began to bloom inside. Takagi needs my help! As she raised her sword to strike the zombie paused and fell to the ground while releasing her arm. A nail was stuck in the zombie's head.

Her eyes fell onto the body in determination. This zombie no, her classmate's corpse was her resolve. She couldn't keep hesitating and cowering. She needed to protect the people she loved and never forget her family's motto. This moment marked her declaration to herself. Sparing one last glance at the corpse she turned and walked into the classroom. "Takagi?"

Hearing Takashi struggle with the hose, Rei ran out the room. "Takashi?" He managed to get it under control. "I'm okay!" He turned his head towards the zombies. "Having fun with all the groaning, huh? Must be nice to be you. Take this!" He turned the hose towards the barricade and sprayed the zombies, making them fall down the stairs. He laughed in victory.

Takagi looked towards the door once she heard her name. "Maikoni?" The brunette smiled and ran towards the pink haired girl and began to look her over. "Takagi! Are you okay? I heard you scream!"

Folding her arms, Takagi looked away from Maikoni in embarrassment. "Of course I'm okay. I made sure Hirano protected me." She stopped making sure Takagi was okay and turned her head towards said boy. She honestly had no idea who he was but he protected Takagi so he was okay. She walked towards him and bowed. "Thank you for protecting Takagi. I'm Hoshiyama Maikoni from class 2-A. It's nice to meet you."

Hirano stared at Maikoni. He heard of her from his classmates. She excelled in academics and sports. Most of the boys in his class had a crush on her and literally everyone admired her. She was always willing to help people study for a test or to pass the class. A slight blush appeared on his face at the sight of her. He then bowed. "You're welcome. I'm Hirano Kohta from class 2-B. It's nice to meet you as well."

Takagi looked between them then the bag in her hand. "Hey, what are you doing?" She walked towards the pair and handed the bag to Hirano. "Here you hold one too." Hirano looked at the bag then back at Takagi as she began to walk away. Maikoni followed after her. "Um, uh... Um, Takagi, can I ask you something?" Takagi paused at the door, making Maikoni stop as well. "What?" The megane looked towards the ground. "Why are you with me?"

Maikoni looked out the door and checked to see if the hallway was clear. "Why? No particular reason." He sighed. "Oh, I guessed so." He half chuckled then loaded the nail gun and walked out of the classroom, ready to shoot anything in his path. Takagi and Maikoni looked at him. "Hey, you're on the ball all of a sudden. Something click or what?"

A crazed look was back on the megane's face. " I'm not sure, but I guess it did!" Takagi saw 'them' walking their way. "Hirano!" He turned towards 'them' and raised his gun "Yes!" Maikoni walked calmly out of the classroom and patted Takagi's shoulder. She stood next to Hirano with a small smirk. "Hirano, I can trust you to watch my back right?" He glanced at her from the corner of his eye and nodded. A full smile appeared on her face before she ran towards 'them'. "Thanks!"

Rei and Takashi began to descend down the stairs. "I'm impressed that you thought of using the fire equipment." Rei smiled at him. "Because the water pressure in the hose is very strong, you know. Don't you remember? During the fire drill when we were in junior high, Hisashi and you got.." At the moment of his best friend's name, Takashi flinched. Rei noticed and stopped before looking away in sadness. Takashi looked ahead. "I won't forget it anymore." Rei continued down the steps and stopped next to him." I think it should be okay now."

He looked at her. "What's going on in there is beyond chaos. Are you sure about this?" She looked at him sternly and handed him his bat. He reached for his bat and accidentally bumped her hand. They looked at each other in shock. He reached again and grabbed it from her, then continued forward. "Let's go!" Rei retracted her hand back and looked away with a blush on her face, nodding. Takashi began running towards 'them' with Rei right behind him. He swung his bat at the zombie, hitting the head, then spun around to make room for Rei to counter with a stab in the stomach. The jab knocked the zombie into another one and made them both fall to the ground.

They continued to run down the stairs towards the hallway. "Where do we run to?" asked Rei. Takashi stopped and closed his eyes. He opened and turned towards her with a smile. "To my house. Let's meet up with the survivors. We'll try to get to my house, helping each other on the way. We're basically all from the same city. We should be able to make it there somehow." Rei looked at him and smiled. "Y-you're right! Now that I know my dad is okay..." She stopped herself. "Oh, we should call your house as soon as possible too. And Maikoni is probably scared by herself. We need to find her."

A silence engulfed them. They forgot about Maikoni. When everything happened Takashi only thought about Rei and Rei only thought about her, Takashi, and Hisashi surviving. It only recently dawned upon them that she could be dead. She could be one of 'them'. Unshed tears began to fill Rei's eyes. How could she forget about her? Maikoni was the one who tried to help and cheer her up when she got held back. She was always there for Rei no matter what and Rei wasn't there when she needed her the most.

Takashi thought back to the phone call. He thought back to a few hours when this all happened. It was Rei he thought about when it happened. It was Rei he wanted to protect and make sure was safe. Never once did Maikoni cross his mind. When Hisashi asked about her he didn't care, Rei was who mattered. But the moment he died Takashi decided to listen to Hisashi and call her. The way she answered the phone with no life in her voice was a shock considering her personality. He was concerned for her. Did something happen to her? He heard the panic in her voice when he answered her back. He wanted to comfort her but he couldn't, not when Rei needed him more. Her last line was what made him believe she lost hope. She didn't believe that they would find each other and she said she loved him. He still was unable to say it back. Did he love her? He was trying, he really was, but maybe not enough. He hoped they were able to meet soon.

Trying to not dwell on her, he smiled at Rei. "We can do that when we have time. My dad is out of town for work and my mom isn't home because she teaches at an elementary school. Besides, they can be annoying." Rei let out a small chuckled then covered her mouth to keep from laughing. "Hey, don't make me laugh at a time like this." She said and followed down the stairs after him.

Takashi was left to his thoughts once more. The truth is I didn't really mean that. I was honestly a little scared. Look at the condition of my school. And my mom is also working at... a school.

A wet towel hit the back of the zombie's head. The zombie continued to walk as if it didn't feel the towel. Takagi, Hirano, and Maikoni were hiding behind a pillar. Takagi dunked a towel into the water. "Wh..What are you doing." Asked Hirano. Takagi pulled the towel out of the water. "Just be quiet." She threw it at the lockers.

The zombie turned towards the noise and slammed himself into the locker. "You see that. They don't react when something hits their bodies. Their senses are dead. They only respond to sound. Most likely they can't see either. Otherwise, they wouldn't bump into the locker." Hirano looked at her. "What about heat?" He asked.

"I'm sure we'll get plenty of opportunities to find out." She got off the ground and swung the bag over her shoulder. "Let's go."

Hirano followed after her. "So, are we going outside?" She glared at him. "What are you talking about?" He looked away sheepishly. "Well, I hate walking." She turned towards him. "That's why a chubby geek is so... You can say that again when you're old enough to get a driver's license."

Maikoni, who was silently watching their interaction perked up at the sound of groaning. She turned towards the sound and narrowed her eyes at the sight of 'them'. Takagi looked towards Maikoni in confusion then to where she was looking. She flinched at the sight of 'them'. Hirano noticed them both acting out of character and also looked. By that time Maikoni was already smashing their heads. Down the hall from them were two people. One was the school nurse and the other was a third-year. They were talking about going to the faculty room when they heard the sound of shooting. Busujima Saeko and Marikawa Shizuka looked in the direction of the noise

Hirano kneeled to the floor and began to shoot at 'them'. Maikoni dodged some of the zombies and smashed the rest of their heads. Takagi stood behind Hirano. "How can we discover their characteristics like this?" The shoulder length haired boy yelled at her. "Please, Takagi, you fight them too!" She looked down at him in shock and anger. "Why do I have to do that?"

"The magazine is almost empty!" She began to yell at him. "So what?! Why don't you just reload it?!" He pointed behind her calmly. "But they're right behind you." She looked at him then turned to look behind her. Her scream resonated throughout the entire building. Saeko, Shizuka-sensei, Rei, and Takashi all stopped and looked in the direction of the scream then ran towards it. Takagi back up. "H-Hirano!" Maikoni looked towards the direction she left Takagi and Hirano and ran. Hirano tried to shoot but nothing came out. "The magazine is.."

Takagi slipped out the bag and fell. She looked up and gasped. "Get away! Get away!" Hirano yelled towards her. "Takagi!" She began to grab the trophies from behind her and throw them. A tall trophy hit the zombie in the face and broke on impact, not fazing him at all. He continued towards her and she looked around for a weapon.

Maikoni didn't realize how far she strayed from the two. Once she saw 'them' her mind went blank and only two things were left inside. Protect Takagi and Hirano. Turn fear into strength. The moment she heard Takagi's scream she ran back towards them. She hoped she wasn't too late to protect them.

Takagi eyes fell upon something inside the bag. She looked at it then at the zombie in fear. Grabbing the drill in the bag she put it in his mouth and started it. "Don't come!" Four people appeared in the door of the hallway. The witnessed Takagi drilling the zombies head. Takagi turned away, crying. "I can't take this anymore! Mom!"

Saeko, Rei and Takagi looked around. "Let me take care of the right." Saeko said. Takashi called out for Rei. She ran past him. "I'll hold the left." She spun and speared the broom handle through their head. Saeko looked at her slightly impressed. "Oh.." Takashi ran past her, jumped, and swung his bat down on the zombie's head. The zombie was knocked back into the wall. Saeko bashed two heads in with lighting speed. She held her wooden sword in a downwards pose with her hair shielding her left eye with a small smile. A zombie appeared behind Hirano. He turned around and tried to shoot it before he remembered he had no bullets. He closed his eyes ready to accept his fate when he felt the wind on his face. He opened his eyes slightly then they widened at the sight of Maikoni. She looked at him with a glazed over stare. Her eyes then turned to Takagi on the floor shaking and looking at the zombie she killed.

The long haired brunette's eyes softly as unshed tears pooled them. "Takagi!" She ran towards the girl wearing pigtails and hugged her. "I'm sorry, Takagi! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to leave you! Are you okay?" Takagi gripped the back of Maikoni's uniform shirt and buried her face in her breasts.

Behind them Hirano looked at Takagi in concern. He raised his arm and muttered her name before Rei ran past. Shizuka-sensei was the next person to run past him, but as she was she hit him with her breast and he fell down. Rei put her hand on Takagi's shoulder. "Are you okay, Takagi?" Takagi looked up at her. "Miyamoto.." Maikoni began to stoke the pinkette's hair.

Takashi walked towards the doors and locked them. Saeko followed after him. "You already know the school doctor Marikawa-sensei, right? I'm Busujima Saeko from class 3-A." He turned around to face her. "I'm Komuro Takashi from Class 2-B."

Rei turned her head to look at Saeko. "Busujima-san, I remember you won the national championship last year. I'm Miyamoto Rei, a member of the spear martial arts club."

Hirano rubbed the back of his head. "Oh, I..I'm Hirano Kohta from Class B." She smiled at them. "Nice to meet you." Hirano blushed at her with his mouth open.

Takagi turned her head away, while still in Maikoni's arms. Maikoni looked at her in concern before letting her go. Takagi stood up with her back to everyone. "Why are you guys being all squishy? Why are you being so polite to her, Miyamoto? You just repeated a grade so you guys are the same age." Rei looked at her in shock. "What are you talking about, Takagi?" Takashi asked.

She turned her head to them with an angry look on face. "Don't even try to male a fool out of me! I'm a genius, you know! Once I put my mind to it, I'm invincible! I am.. I am.." Maikoni glazed up at her from the floor. Takagi was becoming mentally unstable. She was afraid, shocked, angry, and confused all at the same time. She knew what that felt like.

Saeko placed her hand on Takagi's shoulder.. "That's enough. It's okay." Takagi looked at herself in the mirror. She had blood on her face and clothes along with unshed tears in her eyes. "Look how dirty it's gotten. I need to ask mom to take it to the cleaners." Takashi appeared behind her and Maikoni placed her hand on Takagi's other shoulder. Takagi turned and hugged Maikoni once more, burying her face in the brunette's chest. They slowly fell to the floor and Maikoni wrapped her arms around her. Takagi's sobs got louder and Maikoni began stroking her hair while pulling her closer. Everyone looked at the pair in sadness as the realization of today began to hit.
