But where does your username come from? I’ve always wondered.

The Japanese word for rat is nezumi. And I had pet rats. But there’s more to it.

When I first really got into anime and manga, I went to my first anime con—Fanime in San Jose, CA—and saw a screening of a then-brand-new show called Fruits Basket. I was enraptured. It cost me around $150 to buy the complete set of DVDs, which I took home and stayed up all night and onto the next day watching. Twice.

In an early episode, Kyou calls Yuki “Nezuko” which the subtitles rendered as “prince of rats”, which amused me. Really it’s more like “little rat”, although that would be konezumi.

Then I started writing fic, and I needed a pen name. So I went with Nezuko. Here on tumblr the name was unavailable, but Nezumiko was available. Which also amused me, because it has the full nezumi in there but also miko which is shrine maiden (think Kikiyo from Inuyasha). So I went with Nezumiko. It’s almost never in use so it’s my usual login name most places (with a different complex password every time, thieves, so don’t bother) but when it’s not available, Nenenezuko always is, so I use that.

Over time my friends have shortened it to Nezu or Nez, which suits me fine. It’s no longer just an online name but one those friends I made first over the internet, like Ki and Saunter and Aubrey, use face-to-face.

Anyway, that’s the story. Pictures above are Hiei and Kurama, who were my rats when I started writing in Scarlet Spiral; Shinobu who was one of my rats when I started Fallen Leaves; and Hughes, Otis, and Roy, who were there for the start of ANBU Legacy

Orochi no Kishi by Itoshi. Illustrated in Aldaria & Lehanan Aida

The quote: Mouse had to admit to himself, as he watched the man scramble to stow his map as he sped away in the side mirror, he was beginning to his kidnapping quite a lot. Once he decided to 'roll with it' the benefits were far outweighing the drawbacks. — Mouse

Warnings: violence, death, murder, racism, kidnapping. Some others. Consider that a highlights package. Read any warnings you can find first.

First up this is one of those books where the reviews and ratings don't lie. The Goodreads average is 4.45 with an overwhelming number of 5 stars. But it is a book that if you don't like it early on you will not enjoy at all. Itoshi does not handhold, and Lehanan's illustrations don't spare detail featuring full-frontal nudity. It is worth noting that Aladria only has two illustrations and the preview of the Hourglass in some editions, after the illustrator switch due to personal issues. But If you love it you love it and it will stay with you, there is a reason why every time Yaoi Revolution releases an update there is something about Itoshi. Fans of this series are dedicated and love it to bits.

When I say Orochi no Kishi (lit. Banner of the Serpent) isn't easy to read I will give you some warnings as to content. Dudcon, violence, death, murder, racism, kidnapping and illusions to something that is close to statutory rape (definitions, fine lines and murky waters). All this in a post-apocalyptic style setting.

I mentioned racism. Well, I love how it handles the racism aspect of the world. Mouse acknowledges his privilege. And most of the time he is in the minority with no idea of what is going on, no idea of what is being said. Given Mouse is always the readers' eyes it means the reader is given the same limitation.

Itoshi is a gifted writer. They have done a brilliant job with the world-building and the character building. Mouse and Sadao feel like they are right. Mouse has hope but does definitely feel like someone who has lived in a crushing oppressive world. Sadao is the living embodiment of the protector. His past is dark and he is trying to stop young boys from having to experience the pain he did. I love them both. Separately and together. Also, there are so many prophetic lines in this book. When you read it a second time you see so much more.

Some random thoughts

the Konezumi nickname and Sadao's reasoning for picking Mouse on sight are wonderful.

Age is just generally hard for me in this book. Mouse is 26 Sadao is 37ish, Shiratori is maybe 35, Tagata is in his mid-30s, everyone else is in their late teens to early 20s. Lupe is most confusing though.

Taga, Sadao and Shiratori are all stunning men in their own ways. But Shiratori is really funny when you realise this is a thirtysomething-year-old man running around 2071 America in samurai armour at all times. Taga's is an enigma. I want to know more about him.

This is one of those books where I love the ending it is painful af but it is so well executed and provides some sort of promise for Orochi no Yaiba

As M/M romance this is undoubtedly not for everyone but for fans of BL (particularly if you want bikes involved), this is a must. Lovable characters, great writing and wonderful illustrations. And I highly suggest reading it more than once if you want to see everything it all it has to offer.
