No, that’s not an over the top anime surname in a vain attempt to make the character seem badass without being badass.  She is a sword created by Muramasa, the Daemon Blacksmith.  Muramasa straddled the line between genius and madness, and was said to imbue this in his blades.  His blades were known for being bloodthirsty and said to be sharp enough to cut through fate.  They are the source of the typical fantasy rule that the sword has to draw blood before being resheathed.

And she’s been reformed.  In the process she is one of the most interesting, conflicted, and loving characters ever created.
