Another Inn AU: Crossover of TCF/Tensei shitara Yadoya no Musuko deshita (After reincarnating, I became the son of inkeepers)

A/N: If you haven't read this series please do if you can! Its adorable, and the mc reminds me of a mini KRS(with his dream to slack and love for sleep).

After a hard life in Korea, an overworked and tired Kim Rok Soo reincarnates into a fantasy world under the name Cale Henituse. A son to a family of innkeepers.

Join him as he (re)learns and grows with those around him, and to gain his dream to live a slacker life!

Lots of family love and fluff between Cale and his family/friends.

Choi Han, Rosalyn and Lock are starting adventurers who frequent the inn(and love the 'family created'*coughKoreancough* dishes. and no, Choi Han doesn't cry as he eats them like he's remembering something precious).

A young nobleman(aka a certain crown prince) practically lives at said inn, often wishes to be called 'Hyung', before he's dragged off by his aunt to 'return to his duties'.

Cale often goes to the market to get food for the inn. Because of this, he often has to go to the butcher. A family owned shop of a scary father and son duo(who he swears have to be ex-assassins or something). But if he gets a small smile from Beacrox after calling him 'Hyung' and an old man giving him lemon tea for his 'hard work', who's he to complain.

A beautiful 'elf' and his 4 year old grandson often visit as well. The little kid is also a adorable brat , hugging his leg and calling him "the human of the great Raon Miru".

He takes in two cute kittens after finding them in the snow(and he and his family are quite surprised to find out they are actually from the cat tribe...not that its a bother...the more the merrier).

The other store/inn owners kids are all childhood friends: Eric, Amiru and Gilbert.

While helping out in the inn is a lot more work than he wants(and 'sometimes' overworking himself unintentionally), Cale can't help but feel...more at peace than he has in a really long time.

Cale is of course, very loved by those around him(and he is of course really oblivious to it all).

He has his 'bad' days, where memories of his past life can get too much or he is sick, but those around him 'pay it forward' as it were, to help him out as he has helped them.

This is basically KRS/Cale getting his slacker life haha

On November 7th 1974 Eric Linklater, the novelist and playwright, died in Aberdeen.

Although born in Wales, Linklater always considered himself as an Orcadian. Indeed like many on the island Eric can claim viking heritage and his family has documental proof that goes back to the 15th century an 18 generations.

There is a great wee story about his Great- Grandfather that I am sure you will appreciate, he worked on the whaling fleet from Stromness. When given leave he’d walk 10 miles home to Harray. It’s said there were many ale-houses by the road, and he never did the journey in less than 3 days!

Educated at Aberdeen University, Linklater spent many years on Orkney, the birthplace of his father, and even commanded the Orkney garrison during the Second World War.

Linklater was initially rejected by the army because of his poor eyesight, but joined up in 1917, his poor eyesight however meant he was not meant to see any action, he was sent to a Yeomanry regiment stationed in the north of England.

I read he lied about his age to join up, he would have been around 17 at the time, it’s partly true,and if you look at the pic of him in his uniform he does look very young.I did manage to dig up the truth about the lie though . While in England he heard that they were sending a small draft to the Black Watch in France, he made a few adjustments to his own medical record (improving his eyesight and adding a year to his age) and, using his own authority as Orderly Corporal, added his own name to the list of those sent abroad.

From 1919 to 1925 he studied at Aberdeen University, first in medicine and then in English. Between 1925 and 1927 he was an assistant editor of the Times of India, living in Bombay. After a year working at Aberdeen University in 1927-8, he spent two years as a Commonwealth Fellow in the USA, at Cornell and Berkeley.

Eric Linklater began publishing prolifically in 1929: altogether he wrote 23 novels, 3 volumes of short stories, 3 autobiographies, 10 plays, and 23 books of essays and non-fiction, as well as the books mentioned above in the first paragraph. Juan in America and Private Angelo are perhaps his best-known novels. He loved the Icelandic sagas, and wrote his own: The Men of Ness: the Saga of Thorlief Coalbiter’s Sons ; later, in 1955, he published a book about the sagas, called The Ultimate Viking.

On 1st June 1933 he Eric married Marjorie MacIntyre, and after a period in Italy they settled at Dounby in Orkney; they had four children.

Between 1939 and 1941 Linklater commanded the company of Royal Engineers on Orkney. In 1941 he was posted to the directorate of public relations in the War Office, and from 1944 to 1945 served in Italy, where he acquired the experiences necessary for writing Private Angelo, which was dedicated to the Eighth Army. It was a book about courage, but it did not celebrate war. Angelo’s remark “I hope you will not liberate us out of existence” might well have inspired William Tenn’s celebrated science fiction story “The Liberation of Earth” . In 1951 he published a history of that part of WW2, The Campaign in Italy, and, with the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel he visited Korea.

In 1945 Eric Linklater was elected rector of Aberdeen University, and in 1947 the family moved to to Ross, and later to Aberdeenshire. From 1968 to 1973 he was deputy lieutenant of Ross and Cromarty.

Diana Gabaldon author of the Outlander books, told National Geographic: she researched for her series of books by reading a Linklater book. "I was reading a research book called The Prince in the Heather. She said. The account of Jamie Fraser surviving Culloden is partly based on a true story in the book where a Fraser of the Master of Lovat's regiment” took refuge in a farmhouse with 18 others and survived the slaughter.

Eric Linklater died in Aberdeen on this day 1974 and was buried in the Harray churchyard in Orkney. His widow, already an active political campaigner, moved back to Orkney, to serve as chairman of the Orkney Heritage Society. She helped to establish the St Magnus festival, and campaigned for the Scottish National Party.

Orkney makar George Mackay Brown wrote in the Orcadian, 14th November 1974,

“Orkney is a poorer place without him; even though for most of the year, he lived outside the islands. It is fitting that his dust should be brought back to lie in Orkney earth.”

Hyder said the meeting highlighted the importance of security in all its forms, including national security, economic security, energy security, and cybersecurity.

Haiti is a difficult place to enter, and irregular migration across the Canada-U.S. border is also likely to be discussed during the two-day visit. The Biden administration is not keen to renegotiate the Safe Third Country Agreement, which critics say encourages migrants to sneak into Canada to claim asylum.

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (CUSMA) provides the framework for the economic relationship between the two countries, and a six-year review clause means it could be reopened by 2026.

A Love to Kill (2005) - I own Japanese DVDs of this, I was so obsessed. A dark, intense melo in which Rain gets a job as a bodyguard to a rising young star played by Shin Minah. His plan is to seduce and wreck her to avenge his dead brother (who he believes killed himself after she heartlessly left him for fame), but he recons without his own impossible feelings for her or the extent of SMA’s internal damage. They remain one of the most impossible, messed-up, intense, doomed OTPs I’ve ever shipped. Stock tissues.

Capital Scandal (2007) - somehow both frothy and deeply emotional, this centers on freedom fighters and playboys and spies in 1930s Seoul. If you don’t love it, you have no heart.

Chuno/Slave Hunters (2009) - possibly my favorite sageuk (it’s a threeway tie atm), this story about an aristocrat turned slave hunter, a general turned slave, and a slave woman turned an aristocrat, all involved with rebellion, court secrets and sheer desperation of their lives is amazing. Beyond amazing. Jang Hyuk, Oh Ji Ho and Lee Da Hae are all on fire and if you ever watch only one sageuk, make it this one.

City Hall (2009) - Kim Sun Ah as a small town civil servant and Cha Seung Won as an amoral fixer for a powerful politician sparkle beyond words in the most grown up, smart kdrama romcom I have ever seen.

Damo (2003) - my first sageuk, this is as good as ever. Ha Ji Won is a police tea servant, a noble lady whose family was executed and she came down in the world; Lee Seo Jin as her noble superior who loves her silently. She infiltrates a conspiracy led by the charismatic, tortured Kim Mim Joon, and epic tragedy follows.

Delightful Girl Chunhyang (2005) - back when Hong Sisters were consistently good, this is a modern take on the famous folk tale. Our heroine is a studious poor girl and our hero a ne’er-do-well son of a local prosecutor. There is arranged marriage, true love surviving some insane sacrifice, one of my all time favorite OTPs, and a heroine and hero that grow into people I was obsessed with. Confession time - I wrote fanfic for this drama!

You woke up to a dim room, the blackout curtains doing their job but the faint glow of the morning sun peeping at the ceiling as the quiet chirps of the birds at dawn created a soundtrack. You felt warm, comfortable and at home as you stared at the once familiar male that was sprawled out close you, his raven hair had grown longer and fell over his now chiselled features in inky waves, eyelashes resting against his cheekbones as he slept peacefully, lips parted slightly. His toned bare body was covered up until his waist by the thin blue blanket that covered your own form and his muscled arm was wrapped tightly around your naked waist as if he was scared that you would slip away while he was rested, warm salty tears rolled down your face and dripped silently on to the whites sheets beneath you as each of his prince-like features triggered an old memory within you.

“Class, this is (Y/L/N) (Y/N), a new student from England who’ll be joining us. Her Mandarin is very basic so please be nice and help her if she doesn’t understand.” The tall middle-aged woman announced to the room of teens then turned to you and continued in a smaller, almost patronising voice, “go sit in the seat next to Guanheng he can help you with the material, he speaks English almost fluently but don’t make a habit of conversing in it.”

Following the teacher’s stern instructions, you ended up in the back of the room cold and silent room at a worn wooden desk next to a slight boy with eyes far too big for him and a bright smile as big as his face, all built-up tension within your frame melted away quickly as you smiled back at the peculiar boy; there was no point paying attention to the math lesson anyway as you couldn’t understand what was being said, you would just have to catch up and teach yourself later on at home.

“How’s school so far?”

You were confused by his choice of first words, no ‘hi, I’m Guanheng’ but instead he asked how’s school. You reply with a short and almost cold response of “it’s fine thank you” before the odd boy pulls you in to a conversation about all sorts, topics ranging from aliens to tests as you tried to avoid being caught by the teacher.

“Guanheng, I’m going to need you to quit playing vines real quick, this test is important and right now I can’t even remember my own name”. you snapped, your mandarin close to fluent and pronunciation almost perfect now out of frustration at the boy.

“Go on a date with me?”

Your pencil slapped the table loudly as it fell from your grip, eyes narrowing at the lanky male sprawled out across your bedroom carpet with his lips now slightly parted in wait while your heart did a weird flutter thing. “What are you going on about now?”

He sat up instantly, an expression of mischief crossed over his face yet you could tell he was being 100% serious with what he had just asked. You catch the glint of nervousness in his large brown eyes and the tiny falter in his smirk as you questioned him and his intentions, “Well you need a stress relief, and I may… kind of… ever-so-slightly-like-you.”

“Guanheng you’re an idiot.” You walked over to him and gently tapped him across the side of his head before sitting yourself in his lap, giggling a little as he caught on to your acceptance of his outburst, “I may ever-so-slightly-like-you-too, Jesus Christ we sound like one of those stupid One Direction fan-fics I read when I was 12.”

“You read One Direction fan fics?”

“Shut up before I take what I said back and I’m not going on that date.”

“So, is there a reason why you bought me to a park in the middle of the night Huang Guanheng?”

“It’s not the middle of the night, it’s 7PM and because,” he set his phone down on the wall close to you both with his suspiciously full Nike backpack before hitting play, SHINee’s Replay (your favourite song) filtering quietly through the small portable speaker and walking over to where you stood waiting for his explanation. “I thought we could have a dance party for our date!”

You laughed brightly as he began to dance, copying the groups choreography but using exaggerated moves to make you laugh and asking you to join in. The pair of you continued to dance along to a compilation of both yours and his favourite songs, occasional pedestrians stopping to watch the pair of you animatedly executing the moves and only stopping to collapse on the grass after when you could hardly breathe, a small layer of sweat clung to your foreheads. Guanheng passed you a still ice-cold water bottle from his backpack before moving to set up a tiny picnic of various foods, the biggest dish however being chicken feet which he placed in front of himself as you stared in slight disgust (still not being used to some of the strange delicacies of the country so different from the one you had been used to while growing).

“Did your mum make all of this?” You eyed up the carefully made chicken wraps and beef rolls.

“Actually, not everything,” he continued to pull a foil-covered lump from his bag, unwrapping it gently and placing it in front of you proudly. “I made this specially for you!”

You glanced down at the clearly home-made battered fish that had been sandwiched between 2 slices of buttered white bread and smothered in ketchup and salt, crusts cut off and the edges cut in to a really awkwardly shaped wobbly heart so that the bread could stay soft.

“I know it’s not as good as what you would have back at home or like, what your mum makes, but I know you miss home and I thought I would try and make you something you have there so here can feel like home! You don’t have to eat it if you don’t want to but-“

Guanheng was cut off as your lips smashed, literally smashed, on to his clumsily, the both of you pulling away moments later when the taste of blood filtered in to both of your mouths as you realised that the force you had hit him with had split your lip. Guanheng instantly began to panic as thick blood dripped on to your blue jeans from the small cut on your bottom lip, all food forgotten in front of you as he began to baby you, placing his fingers to your cut to try and stop it from dripping more but then beginning to freak harder when the liquid came in to contact with his skin as he was now smearing your warm blood over both your chin and his hand.

“Hendery calm down! I’m at home here” Guanheng instantly froze, hand falling from your lips to your thigh, slightly squeezing it as he processed what you had just called him.

“Hendery?”

A blush fell across your cheeks as you put your hand over his and intertwined your fingers, “yeah, you’re just… a Hendery. It sounds kind of prince like, you remind me of Prince Eric a little, you just need to grow out your hair a bit!”

“Hm… well I guess I can be your prince?”

“Huang Guanheng, shut up you’re so embarrassing!”

The winter sun made the snowy ground glitter prettily, most of the snow untouched as the public decided it was best to stay inside, making it a perfect time for you and Hendery to visit the usually busy place. Your boyfriend’s cheeks had a soft blush to them as he positioned you in ‘the perfect position’ for a photo, the rest of the wall’s walkway could be seen behind you as well as the fairy-tale-like scene of the snow-covered forest and mountains. “Hendery, I want you in it though!”

You took him by the hand and wrapped one arm tightly around his waist, going up on tip toes and bringing your now spare gloved hand up to flick him on the forehead gently, “you know it would be much prettier if my Disney prince is in it too, right?”

“What do you mean ‘you’re going to Korea to join SM’, are you actually crazy?” You stared at him as he sat across his bed in, disbelief lacing your uneven voice, his light grip on your hands tightening as he gulped audibly.

“Y-yeah, I got cast last week while I was in Korea with Cathy for that Exo show. I’m going next week, they’ve booked everything and I just have to turn up to the airport on Tuesday with my stuff, I’m going to be a trainee…”

Uncomfortable silence engulfed the small and cosy room, neither of you could make eye contact and all you could think about is how your best friend and boyfriend was about to leave you after nearly a year to move to a new country and chase a career in a company that you knew wouldn’t treat him how he deserved to be treated. Your mind raced with all the things you wanted to say, you wanted to beg him to stay and find a better company, or even to just continue his training to become a comedian.

“You know… SM doesn’t have the best track record with how they treat their Chinese idols right? Hangeng, Kris, Tao and Luhan have all been treated like crap because they’ve been in that company, you could literally be put in to any company!” Your mind and mouth worked together to betray you, your voice raising more than intended and exposing your slught anger at the situation.

“Yeah but SM basically guarantee success, I know my efforts and time won’t be wasted. I know they’ll be giving me the best career and I can come home and we can do everything we’ve planned and-”

You threw his hands back to his lap as you scrambled off of the bed, you could feel yourself burning up in anger at his words and scowling down at him.

“Are you even hearing yourself right now? You’re willing to let yourself get treated like shit just for some fame? Are you a fucking idiot Guanheng? I’m not standing by and watching you harm yourself from a thousand miles away, I refuse to be a part of that!”

“It’s not just for fame,” he scrambled to stand in front of you now, anger on his red-tinged face as he scowled back at you. “It’s what I want to do, it has nothing to do with you! You’re just getting like this because once I leave you’ll have no one here because you don’t talk to anyone else, if you refuse to be a part of it then don’t be.”

The air thickened noticeably at his words as you let it soak in, tears prickled at your eyes and a large lump forming in your throat. “Fuck you.”

And you left.

4 years had passed since then, he had left with nothing but a text apologising for what he had said, how he understands that what he said was wrong and wishing you the best because he assumed (and he had done so correctly) that you would want nothing more to do with him.

2 years of school had passed quickly with no interactions between you and him or his family other than the odd conversation with one of his older sisters (who were nothing but nice to you even now) if you happened to bump in to each other in the streets, you had entered university for journalism and was currently holding an internship for the summer with Shanghai Daily working on their celebrity news section and somehow, as if the world hated you, you had ended up being the intern sent to interview the new and rising group WayV as you were the youngest there and would ‘understand what the people wanted’.

When Guanheng’s, or Hendery as you now had to call him with a deep pang in your chest as you remembered giving him that name, large eyes met yours you couldn’t help but be reminded of the first time you had met him. When he moved his floppy hair out of his face you couldn’t help but (willy - Jazz Brain @namkook666 on Twitter go follow) be reminded of him being determined to grow it out to follow your whole Prince Hendery agenda. What hurt the most though was when you woke up the day after in his hotel bed, his bare chest pressed against yours, his arms tightly around your waist as your warm lips pressed together in the morning glow, legs tangled together and tears wetting both of your hot faces as you were reminded of what you had previously had and could never get again.

>Stingers Sound. SKUL5 came here to convince Eric Raymond to let them be the guest band for the spring concert at the Hollywood Bowl. This is actually to change Eric’s cognition to let us go further into his Palace... Fortunately, they have back up.

Here we are. Stingers Sound. It’s a little grand, but I think we can handle it.

I know. By the way, Haruto san, thanks again for helpin’ us out. You’re really goin’ all out for us.

Haruto: Thank nothing of it. I think it’s good that this country will get to know just how well Dream FES Idols are. Especially after you got yourselves a new member.

I’m just glad. This will be my first major debut. I wonder if this is how Ryu felt.

Skull: Yeah, I was a bit nervous. But I’ve gotten better. I know you will, too, Goro.

Just try not to do anything that will embarrass the Unit. Like forgetting the lyrics of the song or saying the wrong words.

(finally got D-Four Jackets for the Okamoto twins) You still remember your own debut, do you?

Oka: Maybe a little.

You need to get over that. You accidentally said one of the ancient scriptures rather than the actual lyrics. It didn’t cause any actual harm.

Oka: But I think I may have scared off some of the yokai at the concert.

Crow: (whispering) You didn’t scare them that much.

Haruto: So, shall we?

>After waiting a long (a really long) time, Eric’s assistant finally lets them in. In his office... the target sat at his desk.

Haruto Mikami, I presume? You’re the one who called me over the phone.

Haruto: I am. You must Evi- I mean, Eric Raymond.

Eric Raymond: (trying not to get angry) Yes. You called to tell me that one of the Idol Units you work with at D-Four Productions wishes to be in the spring concert at the Hollywood Bowl.

Haruto: Yes. This is SKUL5.

Skull: I’m Ryuji Sakamoto. I’m the leader of this Unit.

Crow: I’m Goro Akechi. You probably already know me as the Detective Prince.

Oka: Matsu Oka.

Ichrio: I’m Ichiro Okamoto.

Nobu: And I’m his brother, Nobu.

Eric Raymond: I can see that. And you really want to me to put these children on one of the most famous stages in the world?

Crow: Excuse me for saying, but most of us are already in college.

Nobu: Except for me and Ichiro. We’re in our second year of high school.

Haruto: Many of our Idols are in high school and they are already famous on stage.

Eric Raymond: Yes, I know. DearDream, KUROFUNE, ACE, ANSwer, many of them. But this, however, is not the concert stage you’re all used to. The Hollywood Bowl is where many greats perform. And why would I hire male Japanese idol group when I could hire a female group? And if I do want a male idol group, I can just call someone in Korea. They’re teaming with them every year.

Haurto: It’s true, South Korea has many idol groups, male and female. D-Four is even thinking about establishing a branch there. But Japan is where the Dream Festival first began and the introduction of the Dream Festival System.

Eric Raymond: I don’t see what’s so special about magically changing into different clothes. Magical girls do it all the time... Then again, magical girl transformations are not so bad.

Haruto: (whispering) Keep it in your pants, man. (out loud) But still, when the audience send the Dorika with their cheers to the Idols, it almost feels like... Like they were going on stage themselves. They could be like one with the Units. Now that’s something many couldn’t do themselves... Even Jem and the Holograms.

Eric Raymond: (suddenly becoming interested) ... I’m listening.

Haruto: Just think, if we can do this concert, the System could make its major debut here in the States. Even establishing a branch of D-Four Productions here in the States. And you, Eric Raymond, would be responsible for that. Let’s see Jerrica Benton and Starlight Music try something like that.

Eric Raymond: Hmm...

>Eric was silent for a moment. Everyone was on edge...

Eric Raymond: ... If I could introduce the Dream FES System before Jerrica, Stingers Sound will become one of the biggest record companies since Sony... As long as you don’t upstage the Stingers... You’re in.

For real? You will?

Eric Raymond: Why not? If something like this will really put Stingers Sound on the map, I’ll take it.

Haruto: I’m glad to hear that, Eric san.

>With that, Haruto and Eric shake hands. Then, Eric turns to shake Skull’s hand. When he does... Eric holds firmly onto it.

Eric Raymond: (in a dark whisper) But know this: If you’re little group even thinks about upstaging the Singers, I’ll personally make sure it’s the last.

(also whispering) Is that so?

>Crow steps up to Eric.

Mr. Raymond, I think we get the picture. Now can you please let go?

>Eric, a little intimidated, released Skull’s hand.

Eric Raymond: (angry, but hiding it) I’ll see you at the concert. Don’t be late.

>A little later, outside the recording studio...

Haruto: That was a very interesting meeting. But, we succeeded.

Oka: But did you really have to scare him, Akechi?

Crow: He was hurting Ryu’s hand. He could have crushed it.

Skull: I’ll be fine. I’m stronger. Still, thanks, Goro.

You’re welcome, Ryu.

>Skull and Crow get close together.

Oka: I wish you would just tell us the rest of the story.

Crow: In time. All in good time.

>They were just about to leave when they heard something. Curious, they followed it into the recording studio... The Stingers where rehearsing a song.

Recording director: Okay, we’re ready for the next one.

I think you’ll find this next song very enchanting.

(Insert musical number: Under My Spell by Riot and the Stingers)

Recording director: Well done, Stingers! Flawless as usual.

Indeed. Speaking of which, you seem pretty good yourself. How about we have dinner later on? I might wear something more... comfortable.

Recording director: (blushing) Please, no. I have a wife and three kids. Not to mention my father-in-law would kill me if he knew.

Ichiro: Looks like that guy’s in hot water.

Nobu: That’s my line.

>The Stinger, hearing this, notice Haruto and SKUL5. But they have yet to notice the Stinger noticing.

Riot: That must be the Idol Group Eric said would be visiting.

Minx: Hmph! They don’t look that special.

Only one way to find out. Watch, I’m gonna mess with them a bit.

>Rapture walks up to them and pretends to fall down.

Haruto: (spooked) Is something wrong?

Rapture: (getting back up and begins talking in a dramatic voice) No! I have just had a terrible premonition. You and your group are in great danger.

Haruto: Are you sure?

Rapture: I am. I have inherited a great gift from my gypsy ancestors who possessed great foresight that allowed them to see what lies beyond.

Oka: (suspicious) And what kind of danger are we in?

Rapture: If you were to go on stage, a terrible disaster will befall you all and ruin your lives forever. Unfortunately, what kind of disaster will befall you is clouded and cannot be ascertained. However, I do have a solution to your problem. (reaches into her bag and takes out a small round thing) This ancient sphere has been passed down from my family for many generations. Keep it with you and it will ensure no harm will come... As for the reasonable price of $5000. (¥610545)

>Oka takes a very good look at the sphere.

Oka: ... A jawbreaker. That’s a jawbreaker.

Skull: He has a point. This reminds me too much of somethin’ one of our friends pulled on another friend of ours. Are you for real about this?

Rapture: (sounding sly) Would I lie to you?

Crow: Well, if you’re so sure, I suppose you wouldn’t mind letting me take a closer look.

Rapture: (trying to keep the sphere away from Crow) You want to touch it, you have to pay for it.

Crow: Well, I suppose...

Look, it’s Penn and Teller Tenn and Peller!

Rapture: (surprised) Huh!?

>Rapture quickly turns to only see nothing... while Crow takes the sphere and puts it in his mouth.

Rapture: Hey!

>After a short while...

Oka is right. This is just an ordinary jawbreaker.

Haruto: (angry) What are you playing at?

Rapture: (getting a bit nervous) That was a... That was a test before I bring you the real one.

Oka: Save it, lady. We’re on to you.

Rapture: (groaning in defeat) Fine, you caught me. How’d you even know?

Oka: The next time you want to con someone with the occult, make sure that someone didn’t grow up in a shrine.

Skull: Or friends with an Exorcist, a Fairy, and a real fortune-teller.

Nobu: Or grew up hearing fantastic stories from their grandfather.

Crow: Or is a detective.

Rapture: ... Well done.

Riot: Some much for not being special, eh Minx?

Minx: (a little upset) I’ve been wrong before.

Skull: Why would you three do that? (begins smirking) What, afraid we’ll up stage you at the concert?

Riot: Not at all. We just wanted to see what kind of people Eric is putting on stage with us. This is not like the shows you do in Ikebukuro. The Hollywood Bowl is the big time. Do you really want to go through with this?

Skull: A long time ago, I didn’t think I could do it. But my friends helped me every step of the way. I owe them for that.

So if we’re done here, we’ll be leavin’ now.

Minx: And I thought Rio was tough.

Riot: (thinking) But you have to admit, something about that blonde guy and his boyfriend I find very... interesting.

“BLACK PANTHER” (2018) Review

"BLACK PANTHER" (2018) Review I am going to be brutally honest. For the past three years, I have harbored mixed feelings about the output from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The year 2015 produced one movie that I found entertaining, yet disappointing; and another film that I found entertaining and original, but not exactly mind blowing. But the years 2016 and 2017 proved to be very disappointing, as far as MCU movies were concerned. By the end of 2017, I thought the MCU had finally lost its mojo . . . until I saw "BLACK PANTHER", early in the following year.

I realize many might find my comments something of a head scratcher. What exactly was wrong with the MCU films between 2015-2017? Well . . . I thought "THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON" was entertaining, yet problematic. I enjoyed "ANT-MAN" very much, but I would never regard it as one of the franchise's best. The movies, starting with 2016's "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR" and ending with 2017's "THOR: RAGNAROK", struck me as very disappointing and somewhat inferior. Despite the fact that the franchise was raking in millions - or billions - with these films, I personally believed it had reached an artistic abyss . . . until I saw "BLACK PANTHER". Not only did I find the latter film entertaining, I also regard it as one of the better MCU films I have seen in the franchise's ten-year history. With "BLACK PANTHER", it seemed the MCU had not only climbed out of the abyss, but had reached (or nearly reached) a pinnacle. "BLACK PANTHER" basically told the story about King T'Challa aka Black Panther adjusting to his role as the new sovereign of Wakanda, an isolated and fictional African nation that is the most technically advanced in the world, thanks to the vibranium metal within its borders. Wakanda has spent most of its existence pretending to be a poor, third-world nation in order to protect itself from the world - especially Western nations - and prevent them from learning about its rich source of vibranium. The narrative for "BLACK PANTHER" picked up at least a week after the events of "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR". T'Challa and his premier bodyguard and leader of the Dora Milaje regiment, Okoye; extract Nakia, T'Challa's ex-lover and a Wakandan spy, from an undercover assignment in Nigeria. All three returned to Wakanda's capital to participate in T'Challa coronation as the new king. During the ceremony, the leaders of Wakanda's five tribes are each given the opportunity to challenge the temporarily de-powered (via a potion that expunges his super strength and speed) T'Challa's role as the new king by ritual combat. One of the leaders, M'Baku of the mountainous Jabari Tribe, challenges T'Challa. After a fierce fight, M'Baku concedes defeat and T'Challa is officially acknowledged as King of Wakanda. Unfortunately, T'Challa's triumph is short-lived when Wakanda intelligence becomes aware of a robbery committed by a group of thieves led by an old foe of the country's, Ulysses Klaue. The latter had stolen an old Wakanda artifact from a London museum that contains vibranium, a metal substance that has allowed Wakanda to become the most technically advanced nation in the world . . . unbeknownst to other nations. When Wakanda intelligence learns that Klaue plans to sell the vibranium to the C.I.A. at a location in Busan, South Korea; T'Challa, Nakia and Okoye travel there to interrupt the planned sale and arrest the arms dealer. Instead of arresting Klaue, T'Challa stumbles across a family secret involving one of Klaue's fellow thieves, an African-American named Eric Stevens aka Killmonger, which will threaten his position on the Wakanda throne and endanger the country itself. After being disappointed by five MCU movies in a row, I found myself wondering if I would ever enjoy a movie from the franchise again. Thankfully, "BLACK PANTHER" proved to be a more than pleasant surprise. Thanks to Ryan Coogler's direction and the excellent screenplay that he co-wrote with Joe Robert Cole, "BLACK PANTHER" proved to be a unique film that combined the usual elements of a comic book movie, a family drama and a rare exploration into the political and social aspects of the African diaspora. Family drama is nothing new to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Audiences have seen this played out in movies like the Thor trilogy, 2015's "ANT-MAN", and to a certain extent, 2008's "THE INCREDIBLE HULK". "BLACK PANTHER" is another addition in which a deadly encounter between T'Challa's father and uncle - King T'Chaka and Prince N'Jobu in 1992, led to the new king learning about his cousin and N'Jobu's half-American cousin, Erik "Killmonger" Stevens aka Prince N'Jadaka. That 1992 encounter led to Erik becoming an orphan and abandoned by his isolationist uncle T'Chaka. This, in turn, led Erik to see revenge against the nation of Wakanda. Ironically, Erik never got the chance to exact his revenge on the very person responsible for his loss, namely his uncle, who was killed by Helmut Zemo's bomb in "CIVIL WAR". But for him, T'Challa and Wakanda served as a convenient scapegoat for his vengeance. What made all of this even more fascinating and a lot more original than the MCU's other family dramas was how Coogler and Cole managed to mix a good deal of political controversy into this family saga. One of the reasons Prince N'Jobu had fallen out of favor with his older brother was his growing disenchantment with Wakanda's isolationist policy with the world - including those of the African diaspora around the world. After his experiences in late 20th century Oakland, N'Jobu decided to reveal Wakanda's existence to Ulysses Klaue and help the latter infiltrate Wakanda to smuggle out more vibranium. N'Jobu had planned to use the vibranium to create weapons and lead a revolution of the African diaspora against the dominating Western nations. With his father dead, Erik planned to not only get his revenge against the Royal House of Wakanda, but also carry out N'Jobu's plans. Watching this, I am reminded of Loki's plans in 2011's "THOR" - namely to keep a powerless Thor stranded on Earth, while he sets up the Frost Giants' destruction and win Odin's favor. As much I had enjoyed that movie, Loki's plans seemed rather lame to me in compare to Erik's. But what made this story arc even more interesting is that in the end . . . Erik's plans to use Wakanda weapons to conquer the world eventually led to T'Challa's decision to finally end Wakanda's isolationist policy. "BLACK PANTHER" featured some pretty solid action sequences. I enjoyed the sequence featuring T'Challa and M'Baku's fight for the throne; Erik and Klaue's confrontation at an abandoned South Korean airfield; T'Challa and Erik's battle for the throne; and the Battle of Mount Bashenga, in which T'Challa and his forces attempted to prevent Erik and the Border Tribe from sending Wakanda weapons to the outside world. All are pretty good action sequences. But if I had to select my favorite, it would be the confrontation at the Busan casino between T'Challa, Nakia and Okoye against Klaue and his minions. With C.I.A. Agent Everett Ross thrown into the mix, this particular sequence was simply boss, especially since it lead to a wild car chase on the streets of Busan. That once scene featuring Okoye slamming her wig into the face of a Klaue minion will probably remain imprinted in my mind for years to come. Another aspect of "BLACK PANTHER" that I admired was the film's production designs. Mind you, the film maintained that same flat photography that the MCU has become infamous for. However, I think Rachel Morrison's photography was enhanced by some sharp colors, the movie's visual effects, Hannah Beachler's gorgeous production designs that convey the world of Wakanda, along with the art direction team led by Alan Hook. Aside from Beachler's production designs, I was especially impressed by Oscar and Emmy nominee Ruth E. Carter's costume designs. Someone had compared them to those costumes featured in the 1988 comedy, "COMING TO AMERICA". But honestly . . . I think I prefer Carter's more natural designs, as featured in the images below:

But all of the above would have meant nothing without the talented cast for the film. "BLACK PANTHER" featured some first-rate performances from the likes of Daniel Kaluuya, who portrayed Border Tribe leader W'Kabi, who desires his own personal vengeance against Ulysses Klaue; Sterling K. Brown as the revolutionary Prince N'Jobu; both John Kani and son Atandwa Kani as the older and younger versions of King T'Chaka; Angela Bassett as T'Challa's strong-willed, yet loving mother and advisor, Queen Ramonda; Denzel Whitaker, who gave a solid performance as the younger Zuri; and Martin Freeman as C.I.A. Agent Everett Ross, who proved to me more entertaining and relevant in this film than he was in "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR". However, there were those performances that really impressed me. One came from Andy Serkis, who was a hoot as the murderous, yet over-the-top South African arms dealer, Ulysses Klaue. Letitia Wright was equally entertaining as T'Challa's witty and charming sister, the tech-savy Princess Shuri. Another came from Lupita Nyong'o, who gave a passionate and heartfelt portrayal of Wakandan intelligence agent and T'Challa's former girlfriend, Nakia. Forest Whitaker gave a first-rate performance as Wakanda's top courtier and former spy, Zuri. Whitaker was especially impressive in one scene in which his character was forced to confess King T'Chaka's past actions regarding N'Jobu and Erik Killmonger. Winston Duke was very impressive, imposing and at times, rather amusing as M'Baku, leader of the mountainous Jabari Tribe. Also, his first appearance in the film - during T'Challa's coronation ceremony - is one of the most memorable moments I have seen in a movie for quite some time. Danai Gurira was equally impressive and imposing as Okoyo, the traditionalist leader of the king's bodyguards - the Dora Milaje. Although I found her character's conservatism a bit annoying at times, I must admit that Gurira gave one hell of a performance. However, this movie is really about two characters - King T'Challa of Wakanda aka the Black Panther and his paternal cousin Erik "Killmonger" Stevens aka Prince N'Jadaka. Yes, I know that the movie is called "BLACK PANTHER". But to be honest, this movie is about both cousins and how their conflicting views on Wakanda's role in the world and especially upon the African diaspora. Chadwick Boseman's second turn as T'Challa proved to be a different kettle of fish from the driven newly ascended king determined to seek revenge for the death of his father, T'Chaka in "CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR". In this film, Boseman gave a more relaxed performance as the happy and more satisfied young king, eagerly anticipating, yet slightly fearing his new role as king. However, Boseman's relaxed performance skillfully transformed into one of disbelief, anger and outrage when T'Challa learned about his father's actions back in Oakland 1992. This was especially apparent in two scenes in which Boseman gave outstanding performances. The first scene featured his confrontation with Zuri, who confessed the true circumstances about Oakland. Boseman gave a very intimidating, yet regal performance in that scene. The other featured T'Challa's second dream in which he expressed anger and disappointment at his father's spirit for what happened to Erik. Speaking of the latter, Michael B. Jordan has been receiving rave reviews for his performance as Erik "Killmonger". Some have been declaring his character as the best MCU villain ever. I do not know if I agree with that assessment. But I must admit that Jordan gave one of the most skillfully ambiguous performances I have encountered in the franchise. Audiences could easily sympathize with his backstory - the young boy who had lost his parents and abandoned. Also, one cannot help but admired Erik's desire to help those African nations and members of the African diaspora - something that his cousin seemed unwilling to do. And yet, the level of violence Erik seemed willing to utilize in order to achieve his goal or his unwillingness to face that the one person who had truly wronged him was dead justified why the talented Jordan had portrayed him such ambiguity. As much as I enjoyed "BLACK PANTHER", I did have some problems with the film. One, there is a chance that I may have stumbled across a major writing blooper. In "CIVIL WAR", Avenger Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch had accidentally killed a group of Wakanda subjects during a mission in Lagos, Nigeria. The Wakandans had been there on a goodwill mission. This lead King T'Chaka to publicly support the Sokovia Accords - an act that led to his death. And yet, Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole made it clear in the 2018 movie's screenplay that Wakanda has practiced a policy of isolationism for centuries. Although Coogler and Cole remembered T'Chaka's death in the 2016 movie and Bucky Barnes' presence on Wakanda soil, they apparently forgot about this goodwill mission in Nigeria. Also, why did Erik Stevens wait so long to travel to Wakanda and make a bid for the throne? He could have challenged his uncle T'Chaka for the throne and get his revenge against the very man who had wronged him. Instead, he waited until after T'Chaka's death. Why? Exactly when did Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes arrive in Wakanda, as shown in one of the post-title scenes in "CIVIL WAR'? The movie opened with T'Challa and Okoye returning to Wakanda for the first time since T'Chaka's death. Were both Steve and Bucky aboard T'Challa's plane? Were they aboard the Avenger jet that Steve had used to fly to Russia in the 2016 movie? Where were they? In fact, there was no scene featuring the pair's arrival in Wakanda for the first time, which I found rather odd. Speaking of arrivals, why was Okoye with T'Challa when he first returned to Wakanda? I realize that she was the leader of the Dora Milaje and that King T'Chaka was in Austria at the time of his death. But Okoye was missing in a scene from "CIVIL WAR" in which Avenger Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow had sought T'Challa's help to track down Steve, Bucky and Sam Wilson aka the Falcon. As the king's leading bodyguard, she should have been there - whether with T'Chaka or T'Challa. Instead, another Dora Milaje bodyguard named Ayo (portrayed by actress/model Florence Kasumba) was there. Yet, the latter was missing aboard T'Challa's plane upon his return to Wakanda. One last question . . . why did T'Challa's closest friend, W'Kabi of the Border Tribe, seemed so willing to help Erik carry out his anti-isolationist policies? Why? I understand that he might be grateful to Erik for finally killing Klaue, the man who had killed his father years ago. But am I really to believe that his gratitude extended to supporting Erik's decision to end Wakanda's isolationist policy . . . especially since he had made it clear earlier in the film that he fully supported the old policy? Was he really that grateful to fight on Erik's behalf when T'Challa had returned alive to resume the challenge against Erik? I truly found this hard to believe. And why was the only truly negative black character in this film was the only one of some American ancestry? There was something about the film's portrayal of African-Americans that struck me as rather negative and a bit one-dimensional. In this film, African-Americans seemed to consist solely of poor and slightly thuggish people barely capable of surviving on their own, except through criminal activities. The idea of Wakanda coming to their "rescue" with advanced technology made the latter country seem very similar to the White Savior trope. And if Wakanda was going to share their technology, why did T'Challa do so with the entire international community, instead of simply other African nations and the African diaspora . . . as Nakia had originally suggested? Considering that Erik had pointed out that many countries - especially in the West - were catching up technically with Wakanda, along with the international community's generally negative attitude toward African nations and those of the African diaspora; I cannot help but wonder if T'Challa had ever considered that many of the more wealthier nations would take advantage of his generosity at the first opportunity? Or was this plot twist something that Kevin Feige and the other Marvel/Disney suits had insisted that Coogler and Cole include? However . . . despite these misgivings I have about "BLACK PANTHER", I cannot deny that I truly enjoyed the movie. I did. I thought Ryan Coogler, along with screenwriter Joe Robert Cole and a talented cast led by Chadwick Boseman, did an exceptional job in bringing comic book hero the Black Panther and the world of Wakanda to life. At this moment, "BLACK PANTHER" has become one of my five favorite movies in the MCU franchise.

Russia's determination to remember tragedy as well as mercy and a spirit of gentle adoption whereby they treat students and other young people much different from what I did; also Russian anti-Nazism - everlasting I imagine - in an age when respect-me-or-die attitudes, moral purity, intellectual hubris and Scientism, messianic corporatism and much else are either being accelerated or badly necromanced as everyone tries to settle every little score (an easy way to forget all the starvation, organ-harvesting, betrayal of human promise that is going on every second). I'm only writing this because it's 7:08 in the morning and it's easier to write than not to write. Lately I developed the habit of 'Holding the Dream' to paraphrase the title of a Nora Roberts novel about children that I tried to turn in to 'Project 521' in a gentler time. I read a C.S. Lewis essay though I forget which one, perhaps 'Home,' about being known. When I read this essay at night it reminds me of a more trusting whole time as does Knausgaard's 'A Time for Everything' whose title is a joke at several levels; a book I'll finish reading, if I even finish 'Autumn' which is my favorite work of his about an unborn daughter, a 'notebook-letter-bouquet' which is a genre I appreciate.For a while I felt I was close to greatness and that my mind and heart were in unison with those I most respect around this globe such as Chancellor John Piper with respect to abortion-culture - playing God - but no matter what I say this is a Maoist era in which power has to be backed by guns or other 'hard' resources. I was also compelled or perhaps tempted to provide background for my spiritual development which in retrospect attracted 'assassins' who were only interested in cherry-picking my worst moment. I honestly came to feel that there is some 'unconditional evil, unconditional hatred' in some that makes them - no matter how nobly they speak or how hard they worked in the past - determined to destroy something at the end rather than build something or help someone or do what they said they would do.I wondered if I blasphemed someone or something so that God allowed the Prince of Darkness through these people, every professing Christians or family-members. People are talking about spirit and intellect and insight but forget that Lucifer has all these in abundance. I've had some delusions and kept responding to people outside of myself. I learned a lot about people whom understanding was without purpose or profit as a) telling them to themselves, that their expectations were wrong or criminal or sadistic or nihilistic or of the party of 'the protest of ultimate futility' - the messaging whereby someone says ultimately nothing matters or you don't matter - was never going to alter their mindsb) this increased experience of human / spiritual evil didn't really constitute increase of knowledge, wisdom, understanding but only more 'CCP-esque pimp-love lie-fare gas-lighting brain-damage; brick to the head' or to put it more gently a wrong emphasis of factors which distorted mood or disposition as an orchestra with good rehearsal, preparation, and conductor could be eroded in the wrong hands over time, and people were just trying to wear me down in a 'Bleed France White' war of attrition against everything I've tried to be and do I also realized of late the time had come to give up certain perquisites that I had had in mind to one day gain or 'help myself to.' At the bottom of my soul I guess I always wanted to cash in; someone else on FB after the miraculous sparing of my life in 2012 started spreading around an experience that I had had with a student in 2012 which was nothing like the K-wave NC-17 version could have been the CCP deepfake character-assassination pretext for WW3 or Covid unrestricted biowarfare against white guys. Words can't fly back in to the mouth that once let them out and at this point I have no idea what my legacy could be - or in a way hopefully no one even cares anymore although I suspect they keep some version of the story somewhere for a dinner-party IDK why I am saying this; you can reason with some people / try and teach them but if they have no compelling reason to change they might just savage youI wondered lately whether some people really believe. They want life but their interpretation / understanding or imago of life - who knows? 'Tomorrow will be like today only more so' (Isaiah, mutatis mutandis). They might love life or hate life but they want it and they also often don't care where it comes from, which is part of why right now the debate over social justice or the fact that so much in the United States comes from outside of the United States, or the fact that poor Millennials et al. are often still unable to get married and have children while Boomers ride emperor-on-palanquin- style on top of the Social Security system and reproach us for believing, like the title of a novel about Shanghai, 'What We Were Promised' at the breakfast-table or in (public, Democrato-Maoist-intellectual-town-bike-fruitbasket) schools about freedom, self-esteem, magic - world peace, nuclear disarmament, the 'salvation' of the natural environment, outer space, technology, non-traditional families, racial reconciliation, international adjudication of breaches of international law and esp. enforcement of human rights. It struck me several times in recent months and years that the rulers, the sovereigns, the princes and great captains of the nations I admire such as Israel and Korea were often either a) special forces soldiers (such as Moon Jaein, Ehud Barak)b) human rights lawyers (Roh Moohyun, Moon Jaein again)c) spies (the individual who might actually have closest to total control of world-events right now; or at least the ultimate veto of everything and everyone, with variable selectivity and specificity / detail) I don't know if I was overreacting or what; I was comfortable with my 'modest income' from mental illness and felt adequately justified since I was engaged in respectable activities; I felt I hadn't really had a moment's rest in life since I was about 4, constantly shot at, judged, abused, thrown to wolves etc. and blamed for my own problems since I 'didn't "make" daddy____.' I even believed I had a chance to re-emerge since everyone amid Covid appears to be essentially on the same side. Before recent events I event felt an 'FDR-moment' / 'New Deal moment' was feasible under Biden though I now see clearly I believe that JRBJr. can't control his underlings, staff, et al. as FDR was able to do; and America and the world are simply too complicated. Vladimir Putin was saying - and he doesn't always lie - basically that constitutional democracies are too weak. Neoliberal+ shills, 'Wahh bureaucracy, Milton Friedman, grist for our mill, cliche, cliche, eat the poor, abandon the weak, post-partum-abortion, God is dead' but a lot of these people are part of a bureaucracy as well and Russia's got government bureaus, CCP does, Korea does. Anyone who ever loved or admired Confucius or studied China knows - though many such as Ezra Vogel and Tu Weiming and some dumb-ass Australians and Indian-Singaporean pervert this knowledge for pleasure and profit - what can be achieved through sincere, spiritual, loving, reverent, educated, talented, qualified, also beauty-loving, statecraft.I guess the only question in a way is whether Microsoft themselves have nuclear weapons or Google built the guidance-systems or something and that's not an LRB title though if I had lived a purer life to this point I might be on staff there or at least they'd welcome me in the cake-shop. Howbeit at this point my 'last wish' is kind of to die in Korea where they journalists are NOT affected or mercenary, and the rag-picking of ppl like me is not fake or ultimately egocentric / meretricious / simulacrum or sham-virtue (again I hate to talk about Nietzsche since I wanted to move on to just David Platt, Saint Augustine, John Piper, John MacArthur, global Christianity 2022). Korea's also, I noticed, a country where the Covid body-account appears to be honest and I know for a fact, as Dr., Prof, much else Eric Feigl-Ding has been talking about on Twitter about 25 hours a day, a country in which the Democrat mentality of 'you got sick you're stupid' or the Milwaukee mentality of 'you got sick bypass watch you die joke at bar but we're still good Christians South Park Satan must be good to be evil sometimes' isn't in effect and people have resolved to do everything they can both to prevent and to mitigate as well to contain or pocket though no one wants to talk much about that. Like I said the other day I wish I were in Korea; I also had a dream about one of those free-standing station-stops in rural Japan that reminded me of 'Cafe Lumiere' by Hou Hsiao Hsien and a conversation I had with Prof. Ban Wang fmr. Rutgers and last I checked Stanford about how Japan had built these intricate rail-systems in order to help preserve rural culture. Another good film about rural Japan is 'Hanamizuki' although IDK if post-Covid anyone is going to want to talk again about micro-sized kindergartens, the Iraq War, fishing, the meanings of trees, following through on commitments or promises, or returning gratitude and love. IDK whether the stuff I read over the last 5-10 years about housing-prices in places like rural Japan or, alternatively, Vladivostok are as low as I've read but if they have good internet I might go if only b/c people there aren't interested in teaching you every lesson or extracting the max. from you then leaving you to die in the name of 'getting to know one.' There's a short Somerset Maugham book called 'The Moon and Sixpence' though I don't admire Maugham that much and prefer his literary criticism / critical appreciations of other writers and cultures to his fiction but it feels like what some people are looking for today is more like 'huge amounts of money, charming personality, offer we can't refuse, satisfying sexual favor or we either vivisect you or pozz you up with 1st-gen anti-psychotics / kill you with ECT and still deny the exist of God, as well as demons.'My other privileged Millennial friends are all mad at me for not bearing fruit and my 'last love' said I dishonored my parents but Koreans & maybe they don't get just how much Mark Johnston et al. are totally committed to reversing course at the most destructive possible moments and never paying what they said they'd pay; like how terrorists will sometimes detonate one bomb for the civilians and another for the first responders on the scene - though maybe I just ran out of chances.

Biden is ending Trump’s travel ban (Vox) On his first day in office, President Joe Biden is beginning the immense task of dismantling former President Donald Trump’s immigration policy, issuing an executive order to end Trump’s controversial travel ban on noncitizens from 13 countries. The policy, colloquially known as the “Muslim ban,” first went into effect in January 2017 and became one of Trump’s signature immigration policies. The ban has slowed or altogether halted legal immigration from certain countries that the former administration deemed to be security threats, keeping families apart and even stymieing refugee resettlement. When the ban was announced, it resulted in mass protests in airports across the US where people from the affected countries, which were initially limited to those with majority-Muslim populations, were held for questioning for hours. This led immigrant advocates to call it a discriminatory “Muslim ban,” citing Trump’s campaign promise to establish a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”

Biden administration to seek five-year extension on key nuclear arms treaty in first foray with Russia (Washington Post) President Biden is seeking a five-year extension with Russia on the only remaining treaty limiting the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals just days before it expires, said two senior U.S. officials. At the same time, his administration is preparing to impose new costs on Russia pending a newly requested intelligence assessment of its recent activities. (NYT) In the hours after President Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, hundreds of people gathered for a series of events across the liberal city of Portland, Ore.—not to celebrate, but to mobilize for the struggles to come. At one demonstration, speakers denounced Mr. Biden as a “feckless puppet of the centrist Democratic establishment.” At another, crowds of antifascist and racial justice protesters made their doubts about the new president even more explicit, burning a Biden flag in the street. At a third event, several people smashed the windows of the local Democratic Party headquarters. “We are ungovernable,” the group’s banner declared. While Mr. Biden has vowed to try to unify the nation and urged Americans to “stop the shouting” after a bitter election campaign, a Capitol riot and a year of unrest over racial injustices and pandemic restrictions, the first day of his presidency concluded with a scene reminiscent of many under his predecessor: Federal agents in camouflage and riot gear moved into the streets of Portland, unleashing thick clouds of tear gas. Media Trust at an All-Time Low (Mediaite) A new poll finds that trust in the media has never been lower, and that a majority of Americans believe the outlets bringing them their news are more interested in pushing a political agenda. According to a survey conducted by the global communications firm Edelman (via Axios, which obtained the results exclusively), 46 percent of Americans trust traditional media. That’s the lowest number ever recorded in the 20 years that Edelman has obtained the data. That mistrust stems, in large part, from a widespread belief that delivering the news is not the No. 1 priority for people who deliver the news. The Edelman survey found that 58 percent of Americans think “most news organizations are more concerned with supporting an ideology or political position than with informing the public.” And 56 percent of people believe the fourth estate is “purposely trying to mislead people by saying things they know are false or gross exaggerations.” The Edelman number tracks with Gallup’s findings. Gallup, over the past decade, has consistently put the percentage of Americans’ trust in media in the low 40s. As with seemingly every major issue in America these days, the party divide is stark. Gallup’s 2020 results found that 73 percent of Democrats trust the media, while only 10 percent of Republicans do.

Trump returns to a business empire ravaged by pandemic (AP) Donald Trump is returning to a family business ravaged by pandemic shutdowns and restrictions, with revenue plunging more than 40% at his Doral golf property, his Washington hotel and both his Scottish resorts over the past year. Trump’s 2020 financial disclosure released as he left office this week was just the latest bad news for his financial empire after banks, real estate brokerages and golf organizations announced they were cutting ties with his company following the storming of the Capitol this month by his political supporters. The disclosure showed sizable debt facing the company of more than $300 million, much of it coming due in the next four years, and a major bright spot: Revenue at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, his new post-presidency home, rose by a few million dollars. No way to hold Rio carnival in July, the city’s mayor says (Reuters) It will not be possible to host carnival celebrations in July, Rio de Janeiro’s new mayor said on Thursday, as Brazil’s second wave of coronavirus infections gathers steam with vaccine supplies still scare in Latin America’s biggest country. Eduardo Paes tweeted that he was aware of the economic and cultural benefits that the world-famous party, originally scheduled for next month, brings to the city. But he said there was no way it could be held even in the middle of the year. Brazil is reeling from a brutal second wave in a pandemic that has claimed more than 200,000 lives, the second highest total in the world after the United States.

E.U. leaders consider travel bans, faster vaccine rollout to contain coronavirus variants (Washington Post) European leaders, struggling with a slow vaccination effort and fearful that highly contagious coronavirus variants could rapidly overwhelm their medical systems, moved Thursday to begin reimposing border restrictions and to speed the distribution of vaccines—even those not yet approved for use. “We are increasingly concerned about different variants of the virus,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters after a virtual summit of European Union leaders, saying that although the bloc intends to keep borders open for trade, it may restrict nonessential travel. The leaders held back from endorsing a specific plan for borders. But Germany—which as the richest and most populous E.U. member often drives its discussions—proposed strict, temporary bans on travel to the E.U. from countries where mutated forms of the coronavirus are already prevalent, including Britain. The proposal would restrict E.U. citizens from returning to their home countries if they are currently in an affected country, and would therefore be more stringent than previous border measures.

After Trump setbacks, Kim Jong Un starts over with Biden (AP) Last year was a disaster for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. He helplessly watched his country’s already battered economy decay further amid pandemic border closures while brooding over the collapse of made-for-TV summits with former President Donald Trump that failed to lift crippling sanctions from his country. Now he must start all over again with President Joe Biden, who has previously called Kim a “thug” and accused Trump of chasing spectacles instead of meaningful reductions of Kim’s nuclear arsenal. North Korea won’t likely be the top priority for Biden, who while facing mounting domestic issues is also gearing up for a push to get back into a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran that Trump blew up in favor of what he called maximum pressure against Iran. The Biden administration’s “sequence of policy attention will likely be: Get America’s own house in order, strengthen U.S. alliances and align strategies toward China and Russia, and then address Iran and North Korea,” said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.

Google says to block search engine in Australia if forced to pay for news (Reuters) Alphabet Inc’s Google said on Friday it would block its search engine in Australia if the government proceeds with a new code that would force it and Facebook Inc to pay media companies for the right to use their content. Google’s threat escalates a battle with publishers such as News Corp that is being closely watched around the world. The search giant had warned that its 19 million Australian users would face degraded search and YouTube experiences if the new code were enforced. Australia is on course to pass laws that would make tech giants negotiate payments with local publishers and broadcasters for content included in search results or news feeds. If they cannot strike a deal, a government-appointed arbitrator will decide the price.

Ultra-Orthodox attack Israeli police amid lockdown tensions (AP) Ultra-Orthodox Jews attacked an unmarked Israeli police vehicle overnight, pelting it with stones and smashing the windows while officers were inside, and igniting a riot in which at least six people were arrested, police said Friday. The violence erupted in Bnei Brak, an ultra-Orthodox town near Tel Aviv. Tensions have run high between police and Israel’s ultra-Orthodox community throughout the coronavirus pandemic as many have openly defied lockdown restrictions to hold religious gatherings. Police seeking to break up weddings, funerals and other gatherings have often faced violent crowds. The latest violence began when the crowd in Bnei Brak pelted the police vehicle with stones, shattering its windows and puncturing the tires. The officers inside called for backup, and when the reinforcements arrived the crowd blocked roads and burned tires. Israel is currently in its third nationwide lockdown, with most schools and businesses closed.

CAR declares state of emergency (Foreign Policy) The Central African Republic has instituted a 15-day state of emergency to deal with rebel groups following their attempted seizure of the capital Bangui earlier this month. CAR faced increased violence both before and after the Dec. 27 presidential election as the United Nations reports more than 32,000 residents have fled the country. U.N. envoy Mankeur Ndiaye warned of a “serious risk of a security and peacebuilding setback” if more peacekeepers were not added to the mission. Seven U.N. troops have already been killed in the latest round of violence.

Bemittened Bernie: The meme that resonated around the world (Washington Post) The presidential inauguration commanded the world’s attention after the most chaotic transition of power in the United States in living memory. So did a pair of homemade mittens on a bespectacled man huddled in a chair. The image of former Democratic presidential contender Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, bundled up, bemittened, slightly slouching and socially distanced with his legs and arms crossed and eyes downcast spiraled into a breakout viral phenomenon after President Biden’s inauguration outside the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday. From the United States to Argentina to Iran, the image proliferated through the far corners of the Internet in an ever-expanding array of jokes. Perhaps Sander’s seemingly grumpy appearance reflected peoples’ own annoyance with politicians and political systems at a time when the world is reeling from a pandemic that has exacerbated economic and social divides. Or it could be that people just really needed something to laugh about together.

The coronavirus and children’s eyesight (Foreign Policy) Although the infection numbers show children have been largely spared in the coronavirus pandemic, a recent study has highlighted an unusual impact the last year has had on children’s eyesight. A study of Chinese schoolchildren found that the prevalence of myopia (or near-sightedness) in 2020 increased by 400 percent in 6-year-olds, 200 percent in 7-year-olds and 40 percent in 8-year-olds compared to previous years. Scientists in an ophthalmology journal blamed the sudden spike in myopia on an increase in indoor activities—including more screen time—as a result of coronavirus lockdowns. They encouraged policymakers to consider children’s need for outdoor play in future lockdown considerations.
