hi beloved!! i'm not sure if you have already explained this in your Love for Love's Sake linguistic explanation posts, please refer me there if you have!! but i did not understand anything about Sangwon's crying scene. who died. was it his grandpa or a poodle. i really really did not get it 😭

Short answer: it was the poodle! (not died yet but had cancer pls someone check up on sangwon and his dog)

Long answer, because I'm always excited to talk more about Love for Love's Sake:

When Myungha catches Sangwon crying on a playground, he asks what's wrong. Sangwon answers: "Seulgi is sick" ("슬기가 앞아요").

And the thing is, Sangwon uses the word 앞아요 (apayo) which is a standard polite way of saying someone hurts or is unwell, BUT you wouldn't use it to talk about your senior or your grandparents. Usually you'd use this word about yourself or your friends or someone younger than you.

This is exactly why Myungha's first thought is that Sangwon is talking about his little brother/sister! He asks: "Is is your younger sibling? Are they too sick?"

And now Sangwon responds with "A grandpa" ("할아버지요"/haraboji-yo). Translation confusion coming in - Sangwon says 'My Seulgi is A grandpa', not MY grandpa. This is when Myungha's doubts and confusion click, because you wouldn't talk so casually about your well-respected old grandfather.

I pulled up an example from Korean studybook, this is how you'd address the same topic in a very polite and formal manner.

할아버지께서 편찮으세요. – My grandfather is sick.

First of all, you'd add a honorific form 께서 to the word "grandfather/haraboji", otherwise you'd look rude, and also there are several verbs that have more honorific forms that are typically used when you talk about seniors like your grandparents (like to be, sleep, eat, die etc).

Think like you can say someone 'kicked the bucket/died/passed away', each means the same thing but has different nuance and level of respect for the person. Sangwon used the second type but he is expected to use the highest level.

If Sangwon was talking about his actual grandfather, he'd probably use 아프세요/apeuseyo (more formal version of 앞아요/apayo that he can use for the adults) or 편찮으세요/pyeongchaneuseyo (honorific verb for seniors)

So Myungha apologizes - just in case Sangwon is a rude brat and actually always talks so casually with his cool grandpa - and assumes Seulgi is not his actual grandpa. His intuition was right, Sangwon is not that rude :D

I can imagine the dog too, this is a white poodle that is a very common breed in Korea – and he might either be actually old (is 12 years too old for a dog?) or Sangwon is affectionately used to joking about it (they do look like small grandpas, no? is it just me?). So it makes sense that you give a haraboji nickname to a dog + talk casually about him (Sangwon paying all respects to his dog would actually sound more confusing tbh xD)

I can add that 슬기/Seulgi means "wisdom" and it's a unisex name but mostly it's used by women, so Sangwon potentially could confuse Myungha even further :D

But also this scene breaks my heart, Myungha is so caring and comforting but then he breaks Sangwon's heart so easily, and Sangwon is left there with a beaten up face and more things to cry about, someone stop me –

The plot of All the Liquors makes zero sense and it’s such a shame because I’m liking the actors. However, I am obsessed with Ji Yu’s bff. He’s so funny. I want a series of his dating woes and judging looks. He’s basically the only reason I’m still watching and he only shows up for a few seconds each episode lol.

He is a fun character. I get it. Because, yeah, the show itself makes... little to no sense.

I often love side characters. Sadly, even in All the Liquors, I have not particularly gotten attached to anyone. Just frustrated by the plot.

Because I originally loved KiHoon. I loved the idea of a non-drinking character who runs a restaurant where everyone expects to be allowed to drink and he has to go against established convention to keep going.

Only it turns out that conviction lasts exactly as long as it took JiYu to smile at him and suddenly he turned into... not a character any more. Because what defining trait does he have? He declares he's 'going to change' in this episode but what does he have left to change? He's selling liquor already, he's working for a soju company as their publicity chef... what's left?

And his friend isn't even surprised to see people drinking in the restaurant when he'd appeared to have spent a long time fighting for it and getting turned down?!?! Why does no one care that he's changed overnight?! Why is JiYu exactly the same as before and KiHoon has to become a different person overnight with nothing but a flutter of flushed eyelids?

Sorry, this turned into another rant about this show.

I do like JiYu's best friend and he deserves better, honestly. But they all do, honestly.

I wish this show made sense. But, than again, between this one and A Boss and A Babe, having characters change instantly from the supposed conflict they're presented as having seems to be the new theme of the year. Not my favorite.

But, yeah, All the Liquors has just... removed any sense of ongoing worry about the show or their relationship. What am I supposed to think is gonna happen? KiHoon has already promised to change and has already turned into a different person with no hesitation. He went from kicking people out for asking to pay for a drink to buying soju for his heavily drinking almost-boyfriend with zero hesitation or thought or effort so... who cares?

the act of criticizing someone’s writing in a to them foreign language isn’t xenophobic in itself either. saying that something doesn’t make sense or that it sounds off doesn’t necessarily mean you’re only criticizing their language skills… and on top of that I do think that if you’re trying to market your music overseas maybe having a native speaker or someone with a higher language knowledge check the lyrics isn’t a terrible idea ?

Duolingo is NOT what it used to be.

“Duolingo is ‘sunsetting the development of the Welsh course’ (and many others)”.

I’ve used Duolingo since 2013. It used to be about genuinely learning languages and preserving endangered ones. It used to have a vibrant community and forum where users were listened to. It used to have volunteers that dedicated countless hours and even years to making the best courses they could while also trying to explain extremely nuanced and complex grammar in simple terms.

In the past two years it feels like Von Ahn let the money talk instead of focusing on the original goal.

No one truly had a humongous problem with the subscription tier for SuperDuolingo. We understood it: if you can afford to pay, help keep Duolingo free for those who couldn’t.

It started when the company went public. Volunteers were leaving courses they created because they warned of differing longterm goals compared to Duolingo’s as a company; not long after it was announced that the incubator (how volunteers were able to make courses in the first place) would be shut down. A year goes by and the forums—the voice of the users and the way people were able to share tips and explanations—is discontinued. A year or two later, Duolingo gets a completely new makeover—the Tree is gone and you don’t control what lesson you start with. With the disappearance of the Tree, all grammar notes and explanations for courses not in the Big 8 (consisting of the courses made before the incubator like Spanish/French/German/etc. and of the most popular courses like Japanese/Korean/Chinese/etc.) are removed with it. Were you learning Vietnamese and have no idea how honorifics work without the grammar notes? Shit outta luck bud. Were you learning Polish and have absolutely no clue how one of the declensions newly thrown at you functions? Suck it up. In a Reddit AMA, Von Ahn claims that the new design resulted in more users utilizing the app/site. How he claims that statistic? By counting how many people log into their Duolingo account, as if an entire app renovation wouldn’t cause an uptick in numbers to even see what the fuck just happened to the courses.

Von Ahn announces next in a Reddit AMA that no more language courses will be added from what there already is available. His reasoning? No one uses the unpopular language courses — along with how Duolingo will now be doing upkeep with the courses already in place. And here I am, currently looking on the Duolingo website how there are 1.8 million active learners for Irish, 284 thousand active learners for Navajo, and even 934 thousand active learners for fucking High Valyrian. But yea, no one uses them. Not like the entire Navajo Nation population is 399k members or anything, or like 1.8 million people isn’t 36% of the entire population of Ireland or anything.

And now this. What happened to the upkeep of current courses? Oh, Von Ahn only meant the popular ones that already have infinite resources. Got it. Duolingo used to be a serious foundational resource for languages with little resources while also adding the relief of gamification.

It pisses me off. It really does. This was not what Duolingo started out as. And yea, maybe I shouldn’t get invested in a dingy little app. But as someone who spent most of her adolescence immersed in language learning to the point where it was literally keeping me alive at one point, to the point where languages felt like my only friend as a tween, and to the point where friendships on the Duolingo forums with likeminded individuals my age and other enthusiasts who even sent me books in other languages for free because they wanted people to learn it, the evolution of Duolingo hits a bitter nerve within me.
