Korean Slang을 좀치네요~
A casual phrase that was been around for a while
뭐뭐.. “좀 하다”
“Done a bit of this / Dabbled in / Done this a bit in my day”
Simply put, it is a playful way of saying someone has done something quite a bit or is pretty good at something. Which is why it’s generally used with the ~네(요) or 거든(요) grammar endings.
For example
“야 너 롤 해??”
“Do you play LoL (League of Legends)?”
“응, 나 좀 하지”
“Yeah, I play a bit”
But this has changed from 하다 (To do) to 치다 (To play a sport or instrument) but still can be used in everyday context.
So instead of saying “너 베이킹 잘 하네!”
“You’re pretty good at baking!”
You can say
“와아, 이 빵 잘 구웠네. 너 좀 치네”
“Woah, you baked this bread so well. Guess you’re pretty good at baking”
As always, it’s not a direct translation, but you get the gist of it.
이제 구독자분들도 한국어를 좀 치시네요~
(Now you (the readers) know a bit of Korean too)

Have you ever heard of the term "소확행"? "소확행" is a shortened version of "소소하지만 확실한 행복," which translates to "small but certain happiness." It's a way of saying that happiness doesn't have to come from big accomplishments or expensive possessions. Instead, it can be found in the small moments and experiences of everyday life. 소소하다 (adj): small 확실하다 (adj): certain, sure 행복 (n): happiness
So, what does “소확행” look like? Here are a few examples:
산책하며 신선한 공기와 햇살을 즐기기 (Going for a walk and enjoying the fresh air and sunshine)
가족이나 친구와 좋은 대화 나누기 (Having a good conversation with a friend or family member)
마음에 드는 음식이나 음료 즐기기 (Enjoying your favorite food or drink.)
몇 분 동안 명상하거나 정신 수행하기 (Taking a few minutes to meditate or practice mindfulness)
그림 그리기, 춤추기, 음악 듣기 등 자신에게 기쁨을 주는 취미 활동하기 (Doing hobbies that give you joy, such as drawing, dancing, and listening to music.)
So take a moment to appreciate the little things and find joy in the present moment – you might be surprised at how much happiness you can find in the small but certain pleasures of life!

korean slang [part 1]
문찐 - culture loser, someone who is not interested in or does not know much about pop culture, new trends.
short for 문화찐따 = 문화(culture) + 찐따 (loser).
사진빨 - being very photogenic.
from 사진발, from 사진 (寫眞, photo) + 발 (lines, streaks).
엔조이 - enjoyment, casual romantic relationship.
네덕 - selfish, immature, and conceited fan or poster.
short for 네이버 ("Naver", main South Korean search engine and platform) + 덕후 (otaku, fan), originally because such people were most common on Naver's general blogs, rather than on more specialized platforms.
수포자 - someone who has given up on studying math (in school).
contraction of 수학 포기자.
솔크 - Christmas without a romantic partner.
of 솔로 solo + Christmas. Christmas is considered a romantic holiday in South Korea.
읽씹 - leaving a text or message on read, and not reply.
안읽씹 - intentionally leaving a text or message on unread.
ㄴㅇㅎ - being incomprehensible.
마자마자 - truetrue, yesyes.
호구 - an overly naive and submissive person; pushover.
sino-korean word from 虎口, from 虎 (“tiger”) + 口 (“mouth”). The "pushover" sense derives from the game of Go sense, implying someone who would be submissive enough to be willing to place their stone in such a position.
현자타임/현타 - (vulgar) post-nut clarity or (non-vulgar) a moment when one realizes that what one is doing is actually pointless, reality check.
현자(賢者) +‎ 타임, calque of Japanese 賢者タイム (“post-nut clarity”).
a non-vulgar reanalysis of the above as an abbreviation of 현실(現實) 자각(自覺) 타임 (“reality perception moment”). the new interpretation retains a metaphoric extension of the original meaning, but in a non-sexual way. many Koreans are not aware of the original etymology, and the word has appeared in TV programs for general audiences.
스포당하다 - to accidentally read spoilers (of a film, video game).
눈팅 - only read articles or posts without leaving any comment; lurking.

i mean this in the least weird possible i promise but. i think that you get an extra layer of delight in reading tged and 약 파는 황태자 if you're used to consuming korean content. i'm not saying you're missing something important from them if you don't do this but,,,, i do think there are certain little details and humor that probably don't hit quite as much if you're not familiar with some of the culture and humor lol
it's just the little things, like lloyd calling javier "this punk" or "this guy" even while talking directly with him, because it feels sorta awkward in english, but if you're used to watching series or movies in korean you can almost hear the tone in which he's saying it.
or when javier is teasing lloyd and he hits too close at home and lloyd just goes "hey" but you can almost heart the "야" which is very close but not quite. or this little 'haah' he does when he's kind of frustrated or thinking hard about something.
or that you don't quite get why it's such a deal that julian started calling lloyd 'older brother' cause the translation doesn't use the word 'hyung'. or that the point of javier and lloyd's bet was that if lloyd lost he would call javier, someone younger than him, 'hyung' which would imply he's older and is a form of showing respect or affection. which is completely different from the 'master' they used in the translation. or how sweet and kind of sad it is that theodore still calls rakiel 'hyung' even when the whole court expects them to be against each other.
or just in general the way the dialogue flows feels much more natural when you consider that it was originally written in korean and not in english
it just,, small things that you don't quite notice unless you already have experience in dealing with a different language than the one you were raised with akjshdkja

i think everyone who reads webnovels should read them in the cheapest and lowest quality way possible because nothing brings more joy than edited MTL that makes characters' names into shit like "iron flower" "standing tall" or "brick"

T발 너 C야?
In Korea, personality types have always been a talking point. In recent years MBTI has taken over, but before that it was blood-types. In social situations people would ask each other their MBTI, or made to guess the other persons, and this spread to the internet as well. Memes of the different types were popularized and have kept evolving.
One that was incredibly popular was
“너 T야?”
"Are you a T?"
T being “Thinkers / 사고형”, which is the opposite of F which are “Feelers / 감정형” Which came from when someone was being too rational or unsympathetic.
This evolved into “야 너 T야?”
“Oi, are you a T?” (야 is an very informal way of calling to someone.. oi seems more of a correct translation than Hey!)
“응 나 T야, 프리티!” “큐티!”
“Yeah, I am a T, Pretty” "Cutie"
Tumblr media
Then in a more crude way, people would say “씨발, 너 T야?”
“Fuck, are you a T?”
Because of the similarity of 씨(C) and 티 (T) people would jumble it around and say
“T발, 너 C야?”
Which is just the modern way of referencing “너 T야?”, so the next time someone gives you a T kind of response, hit them with the “T발, 너 C야?”

Me watching the 10th Episode of My dearest:
Tumblr media
Like.. really girl?? You couldn't make one step for the guy who made 99 steps to come to you?
Honestly, my disappointment is not that the ship didn't take off. (In fact, I was shipping Gil Chae with almost every character and shipping Jang Hyun with Ryang Eum.)
What irritated the fuck out of me is that Gil Chae cannot communicate or stick to a decision for the life of her! I truly like the fact that the heroine had a character-journey from being self-centered and shallow to being self-reliant and responsible.
However, she is so defensive (still) and can't communicate until after the fact!! How hard is it to say "Sorry dude, I moved on. Good luck on your life though"? Or the fact that while she learns to be responsible towards her family, she doesn't feel responsible towards the guy she wants to call her husband?!
Also, I am fed up with this Korean drama romance trope of - Guy has to jump through thousands of hoops of fire, go through hell three times, and face betrayal one hundred times to get the girl. Meanwhile, the girl just needs to choose from the 3 choices she has.
At this point, I am kinda hoping that Jang Hyun would end up with someone else - be it Ryang Eum, Gu Jam, a random passerby, the Evil General™, the Crown Prince's eunuch, or the Evil Lady™ who will inadvertently be a Princess/Grand Princess or the daughter/younger sister of the Evil General™...
