Are you a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender and/or The Legend of Korra? If so, you’re in for a treat! The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that a new animated universe is being created to expand on the Avatar mythos! These two Avatar shows have had a resurgence lately since they became more accessible on Netflix a few years ago.
The first project on the list for the newly created Avatar Studios is an animated feature film. More details will be announced at a later date.
Avatar: The Last Airbender debuted on Nickelodeon in 2005 and had a good first run, with the Legend of Korra debuting in 2012; these two animated series set the tone and created a good fanbase for the future .
The feature film, The Last Airbender directed by M. Night Shyamalan, was released in 2010 and was a box office failure. As an Avatar fan, I did see this film and while there were some good moments, overall the film fell flat and didn’t deliver as they tried to fit a whole seasons worth of story into one 2 hour movie.
Recently, it was announced in 2018 that Netflix is developing a live action series adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender with initially the original show creators attached to the project. However, in August 2020 the show runners left the project due to “creative differences”, but the project is still in development there on Netflix.
So with a live action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender in development at Netflix and now some animated projects in development with CBS/Viacom and Nickolodeon, the Avatar world will be making a big comeback within a year of two. I’m excited for these new announcements and an upcoming animated movie, as I’ve watched them since the beginning of Avatar: The Last Airbender all the way through The Legend of Korra and can’t wait to see what is created next for the fans!
how native american characters are treated in avatar the last airbender and the legend of korra:
i will be talking about sokka, pakku, yue, hama, katara, korra, noatak(amon), unalaq, varrick and ming-hua.
sokka: even though he was the older sibling, his sister had to took care of him, and he was constantly sexist towards her. this would be understandable if ATLA was a sexist world in general, but it was not. two people who show explicit sexism in the series were native men (sokka and pakku).
he was also being physically bullied by benders (including his friends), but not because he was being sexist, but because he was a non-bender.
pakku: he was sexist, racist and low-key pedophile.
he refused to teach katara (a 14 your old girl who is the last bender of her tribe) because she was a girl.
the reason he changed his sexist ways was because he was obsessed with the 16 year old girl he knew even after 60 years ago. he later engaged her off-screen.
yue: this native girl was controlled (a form of abuse) by patriarchy for her whole life, she was treated as a power tool by her father and fiance. she constantly had to make sacrifices so that her people would be happy.
and i thought katara could help her, who had faced the same abuse, but no. two native girls helping each other? no, we didn’t get that.
in the end of her story, if she didn’t sacrifice herself, the moon spirit would be dead and the world would fall out of balance. the balance of the world depending on the sacrifices of a 16 year old native girl? feels very problematic.
hama: she was captured during one of the raids that aimed to wipe out the benders in her tribe. she was imprisoned in enemy land. she developed a technique to break herself out of the prison. when she was out, she didn’t have anyone to trust. she was in the enemy land. she was stolen. she didn’t trust enemy nation’s citizens, she couldn’t. she couldn’t know that they were brainwashed people. she saw them as her enemy. so she kidnapped them. this is the way she thought she could help innocent people.
she wanted to teach her technique to another native girl so that she wouldn’t face the same horror she faced. but she attacked??? katara when she refused to learn.
in the end, she was imprisoned by katara, A NATIVE GIRL, by the very technique she invented. while a man who was happily committing war crimes a couple of years ago got to be praised as a hero, left his 16 year-old nephew in charge of the world and got to have fun in his tea shop.
katara: this native girl had to take care of her brother from such a young age, and later she had to take care of her friend group. you’d think that what this girl needs is to be taken care of & focusing on herself.
but no, they made her a stay-at-home-mom. but she was bad at that too! she let her husband traumatize all 3 of their kids.
she also didn’t do anything while native american colonizers were invading her tribe.
once a great fighter and a healer, she can’t heal now. and she most certainly can’t fight.
there was a scene in b1 finale where katara couldn’t heal korra, and aang showed up and gave korra her bending. (and this also went against the lore… we have never seen two avatars with their physical bodies in the same place, did we? roku and kyoshi possessed aang’s body or came as spirits before but they weren’t there together. but aang… he was literally there to give korra her bending…)
she was also kissed without her consent by the hero, twice, only to create a tension that ended on her kissing the hero who was obsessed with her.
(no, it wasn’t love. if it was, he would have learned the avatar state in the first place. because he’d know that he needed that to protect katara, sokka, toph, appa, everyone! he wasn’t blinded by love, love isn’t something that blinds you, obsession is.)
EDIT: i wasn’t planning to get into how fandom treats native american characters, but i can’t stand fandom’s treatment of katara anymore.
katara: we are going to find the man who took my mother from me.
aang: and what exactly do you think this will accomplish?
how do you expect katara to respond? sit and explain why she wants to find her mother’s murderer (who is out there living a happy life)?
oh sorry, his life wasn’t happy because he had a loud mother, gotta empathize with him!
shouldn’t aang understand katara?
instead, he said “you sound like jet”. i see. katara sounds like someone who attacked a civilian village. because she wants closure and justice for her mother’s death… i see…
korra: korra was a bisexual native girl. she was headstrong, tough, stubborn and hot-headed.
but the fact that korra had to go through so many physical&mental torture so that she could get rid of her traits and be more “mature and compassionate”…
if you want her to be mature and compassionate, maybe,,,
don’t torture her? find other ways? i am sure there are better ways.
noatak(amon): he was raised by his father (who was a bloodbender criminal) to be a revenge tool (surprise! a form of abuse again). he had to leave his home at the age 14.
later in life, he wanted benders and non-benders to be equal. he hide his identity as a bender so that people would trust him.
but his way of bringing equality was… taking everyone’s bending away. it didn’t matter to him if they were innocent or not.
he had this idea that bending=evil.
when the lieutenant, a faithful follower of him, saw him bloodbend korra, amon threw him away with his bending. instead of, you know… explaining himself.
in the end he was suicide-murdered by his brother.
unalaq: he was a cold-hearted, power-hungry colonizer native american who was obsessed with spirits, abused his kids and plotted against his brother to gain the throne for himself. he tried to kill his niece. in the end, he was killed by her.
varrick: a capitalist native who abused his assistant and later married her.
he developed mass destruction weapons that took place in the damage of an entire city for a fascist ruler.
he fueled hatred between northern tribe and southern tribe so that he could profit from the war.
he also stole from the company of a teenage girl who was dealing with her father’s betrayal & burden of inheriting a company.
ming hua: ming hua was a disabled native woman. she was part of a terrorist group. she was also the one with most sadistic tendencies.
her group was down with assassinating a 4 year old native kid.
in the end, she was killed by lightning while she was in the water.

Reposted (via @regrann_app ) from:
BIG announcement! @bryankonietzko and I are returning to #Nickelodeon as co-chief creative officers of Avatar Studios to develop new animated projects in the #avatarverse and oversee the franchise. Couldn’t be more excited and inspired!
Here’s our quote from the annoucement:
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender. But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do. And with this new Avatar Studios venture we have an unparalleled opportunity to develop our franchise and its storytelling on a vast scale, in myriad exciting ways and mediums. We are exceedingly grateful to Brian Robbins and Ramsey Naito for their enthusiasm and respect for the Avatar property and us as its stewards. From the start, they’ve supported our ambitious plans and created a positive, proactive environment for us. We’re excited to be back at Nickelodeon where Avatar began, doing what we do best in the biggest way possible. We can’t wait to build the great teams and productions to make all of this fantasy a reality.”

The avatar will return.
I love being dramatic skshdks
Yeah I’m a bit skeptical of Avatar Studios and the oversaturation and commodification of modern media, but also I think it’s cool that another generation of kids gets to grow up watching new episodes/movies of avatar. Kids that were too young or missed out on Aang or Korra when they were first airing, now get something to have for themselves.
Korra haters be like:
-We hate her because she is arrogant - Just Like Toph right? She is pretty arrogant and you guys love her
-We hate her because she had no development - She development actually mirrors Azula and Zuko development arc. So when you say things like this, you’re also talking shit about Azula and Zuko developments arc
- We hate her because she is weak, she always need help - Just like Aang right?! If it wasn’t for Katara, Aang would still be in the iceberg. If it wasn’t for her, Aang would have died in the end of book2. An if it wasn’t for her again Zuko would have died and Azula would be FireLord and the war would be far from over. If it wasn’t for Toph, Sokka and Suki, Aang may have had lost the battle since he would fight both the powerfull Ozai and his fleet.
-The characters in TLOK are to overpowered, they convenient discover new abilities - Just like how convenient it was for Toph, the new gaang member, be the one who invented metal bending? And how convenient was that Katara was able to bloodbend, a ability she have just discovered, the woman who pretty much mastered and spend most of her life developing and using this skill
-The Legend of Korra is terrible, to many god ex machina moments- Because that Lion Turtle convenient appearing just in time to give Aang the answer he was looking for since book1 and the power to do what he wanted since he had no intention to kill Ozai. Oh and how convenient it was that Aang hit his back scar in that pointed rock just in time to enter in Avatar State, and how dafuck that was able to restore his chakras?
Hate The Legend of Korra is hate The Last Airbender because even being two very different shows, they share so much, they mirrors and complete each other.
That’s why 90% of the haters are straight males, because the truth about why they hate her show and her character is way more simple : They hate Korra because she is a lgbt poc woman who doesn’t take any crap from any men.
The reason I think we’re both excited and wary of new Avatar content is because WOW it’s AVATAR! And it’s gonna be ANIMATED! But on the other hand we’ve seen this before w companies like Disney. They take the things that made a lot of money and squeeze it dry, leaving bitter tastes in our mouths.
I’m excited, but I don’t want my love for the original ruined! As much as I love korra, they really pedaled the whole “Aang was a kind of bad dad to Bumi and Kya” thing and it kind of warped the way i rewatched ATLA for a long time, you know
