“Give. Them. Back.” To anyone, the harsh tone that Butch spoke in and the dark shadow that loomed on his face would’ve had them quaking in their boots. Luckily for her, though, Cassidy wasn’t just anyone.

She knew that if her partner was really pissed at her, he wouldn’t have let her get away with throwing another couch cushion at his face. The lucky bastard caught it right before it could make contact with him and tossed it atop of a sweatshirt that Cassidy had balled up to use as a weapon against him.

The small apartment the two shared looked like it had gotten swept by a hurricane, all because Cassidy had decided to swipe Butch’s cigarettes out of his closet when he was in the shower. A dirty move.

Well, Butch wasn’t going to let her get away with it. Those were his good cigs too.

Plus, Cassidy didn’t even smoke! The first and last time Butch had ever let her bum one of his cigarettes, she coughed so much that Butch was afraid he would need to take her to the ER.

“Aww, is the poor baby mad because Cass has his cancer sticks?” the blonde teased, waving the box of cigarettes in the air mockingly.

Butch huffed, “Cassidy, the only thing separating us is this couch, and if I have to push it to get to you, you ain’t gonna like what happens next.” He pointed his finger at her threateningly.

Actually, Butch had no idea what he was going to do, and he also really didn’t want to have to push the couch out of the way (it was really fucking heavy), but he was hoping that the woman would just give in.

Unfortunately for Butch, Cassidy did the exact opposite of what he wanted her to.

“Oh please, Biff,” she scoffed, “That whole, ooo, I’m a big-scary-man act doesn’t work on me.”

“My name is Butch, dumbass!”

“Careful, now, hon, really wouldn’t want to insult the girl who could just toss this wittle box off the balcony.”

Butch gasped, “You wouldn’t dare.” That was too far, even for someone like Cassidy.

His partner stuck out her tongue, leaning forward, “Try me.”

Then, Butch did the only logical—and legal—thing he could think of. He turned his gaze from Cassidy and to the window behind her, “Hey, isn’t that Team Rocket’s Delibird?”

Cassidy snapped back up, spinning around quickly. “Where? Because I put in a request for a Houndour weeks ago.”

Butch used her distraction to jump over the couch. Only, he hadn’t been watching where he placed his feet and ended up sending both him and Cassidy to the floor.

“What the hell is wrong with you, Butch!?” Cassidy cried out, “You could’ve killed me!”

“But I didn’t,” Butch shot back, trying to reach for the cigarette box that Cassidy was holding over her head. “Give em’ back!”

Cassidy wasn’t relenting, she shoved her free hand into Butch’s face while trying to use her knees to push him off. “You’ll have to try harder than that!”

“Challenge accepted,” he grunted and then opened his mouth to lick the hand that Cassidy was trying to suffocate him with.

The blonde let out a disgusted scream that Butch was sure almost shattered all the windows in their apartment.

She pulled her hand away from him, wiping it on her shirt, and Butch used that to his advantage. He moved his hand over the one that Cassidy was clenching his cigarettes and the other to pin her other wrist to the ground, preventing her from aiming for his face again.

“Guess I win,” Butch panted, with a smirk pulling at his lips as he saw how frustrated Cassidy looked underneath him.

Wait. 

Butch’s throat went dry as the reality of their current predicament set it.

He had Cassidy underneath him, their bodies were pressed against each other’s, and why were their faces so close together? Of course, they had play-fought before, and neither one of them were strangers to touching the other, but Butch was sure they’d never been in this position before.

“Butch?”

“Y-yeah, Cass?”

“Not to kill the mood or anything,” she began, “But you’re kind of squishing my boobs here, and it’s starting to hurt.”

Butch jumped off her like she was a stove set on high. “Shit, Cass, I didn’t mean to – fuck, you okay? Need me to get you anything?” he asked frantically.

Cassidy laughed at how red his face was getting. “I’m fine, you idiot. Just be more careful next time.”

Next. . . time? Was Cassidy implying that . . . no, no, no. He was not letting his mind wander off like that. Butch sprang up on his feet, heading in the direction of the bathroom.

“Where are you going?” Cassidy asked.

“I need a shower,” Butch answered. A cold one.

Now Cassidy was lost, “But you already took one! And what about your cigarettes?”

“You can keep em’!” He shut the bathroom door behind him, leaving a confused Cassidy sitting on their living room floor.

She sighed, tossing the cigarette box on the couch. There was always next time.

Episode 57 - The Secret of the Breeding Center

This episode features a Pokemon Day Care! Ash got lost in the woods and somehow wound up north of Cerulean way back when, so he never encountered the one on Route 5. This is his first time hearing about the concept.

Of course, these days most of us just use these places for breeding. But leveling up your Pokemon while you're away was the original intent. And Misty seizes just such an opportunity to make her Psyduck into a serious, competitive Pokemon without having to put the work in herself.

Unfortunately, the care center turns out to be a Team Rocket front. And not, like, Jessie and James's latest scheme, but a legitimate Rocket front under Giovanni's supervision. (Opening a Pokemon Day Care and then making off with all the Pokemon people check in is a pretty clever Rocket scheme, gotta say.) The op's being managed by new antagonists Kosaburo/Butch and Yamato/Cassidy.

Once discovered, the legitimate Rockets prove significantly more formidable than Jessie and James. They apprehend everybody but Misty in short order (including Jessie and James, who ignorantly showed up to rob Team Rocket's Day Care.)

But courtesy of new guy Todd's tendency to photograph everything, Misty's able to turn over evidence of Butch and Cassidy's operation to Officer Jenny, and the police shut down the operation. Although they're not pushovers like Jessie and James, Butch and Cassidy also aren't as slippery either, and prove unable to escape.

This win lets Todd bow out on a high note. As Ash continues on to Cinnabar Island, Todd goes his separate way.

(Also James has a Victreebel now. We never saw him catch it but it's in his possession as of this episode. Um. Okay.)

The fun part about characters' names being written in katakana is obscuring the meaning or being able to be interprered many different ways. For example, Brock's Japanese name Takeshi, could be written as bamboo-will or rock-mountain depending on which kanji you use.

We know that Bashou and Buson take their names from haiku masters and we know Buson's named for his loyalty and devotion to Bashou, but Buson's high rank, design, and military aesthetics suggest a different possible meaning and kanji spelling, which might also explain the dub's choice of Attila and Hun...

Poet Bashou took his pen name from the banana tree, gifted to him by a pupil. His hermitage at the temple was shaded by the banana tree, so it became known as the basho-an.

it fell into disrepair by Buson's time. Buson spent money restoring it and built a monument to Bashou there, even asking to be buried next to it, a request that was honoured, and his own disciples were buried around him.

Poet Buson's name is written with the characters for turnip-village. He was also calked Yosa no Buson, Yosa taken from the name of his mother's birthplace. Buson was born in Tennoji, which was then known for its turnips, so Buson is turnip-village.

Another way to write Buson is with these kanji:

武尊

Meaning:

武 Strong and courageous. Strong-willed. warrior. soldier. Battle. War. Military. War potential. Weapons. Overcome. Surpass.

尊 Respect. A high value or rank. A word expressing respect. A title of respect attached to the name of a deity or noble person.

So, that's 武 (bu, same as in bushidou) meaning “martial, military, warrior, arms” and 尊 (son) which is a mark of respect and used for nobility and deities.

Attila the Hun, a famous warlord, dubbed the Scourge of God, therefore feels fitting.

'Attila (pronounced: “atilla”) is a modern transcript of the name of the Hunnic ruler of the 5th century AD. Its origin is debated, either a Germanic exonym (meaning “respectful father”), or Turkish (in this case it means “father of the earth”) or Mongol (it can mean simply “ruler”).'

Both names are war-like, befitting a warrior, soldier... and a weapon. They also suggest lofty rank, fitting a high ranking agent who tries to capture a Legendary Pokemon (and later succeeds at capturing another!)

... this one is probably simply serendipity, but Buson being based on the tanuki archtype (contrasting with Bashou's kitsune archtype*), tanuki having a weakness for wine and women, and Attila the Hun's mysterious and shady death on his wedding night to a woman who asked for his help to be freed from an unwanted marriage (she sent him a letter and a gift and he either misunderstood or willfully misinterpreted it as a proposal to him, so went to war ostensibly for her sake) was either assassinated/somehow poisoned by his wife or the bleeding was caused by his drinking problem.

Soooo I just realised what bothers me about Kalos Rival cameos in JN116. They weren't given their game-accurate hair highlights, like every other character in JN has been corrected to have.

I know it's just a fun cameo and all, but it still makes the character designing feel like a bit of a mess and not consistent.

Along the way, around the Tseng River, which is 800 li wide, they try to exterminate a demon king named Inspiration Great, who sacrifices children, but the demon king escapes into the water and does not appear. Kannon Bodhisattva appeared there, scooped the water with a bamboo basket, and found a goldfish in it. The demon king was an incarnation of a goldfish that grew in the lotus pond of the bodhisattva.
