NAGI SEISHIRO & KOUSEI
"Sei'. Kousei. Get up, it's time." Seishiro only groaned in return as you lightly shook him awake, drifting back into sleep.
You were growing irritated with how long you've been trying to wake the both of them up because your husband happened to be a professional sleeper and unfortunately, your son inherited that from him. Finally, you pulled off the blanket of them, revealing your son curled up on his father's stomach, matching blue pajamas with pandas on them now visible.
You took a moment to admire the sight before you, your harsh expression softening for a moment before snapping back to reality. "Come on, Sei. You're acting like a big baby." You reached out to lift the toddler from Seishiro, gasping in surprise as his eyes snapped open, protectively wrapping around his son as he scanned the area for any danger. "Well, good morning to you, too."
He visibly relaxed his demeanor at the sight of your form, sleepy expression back on as he plopped back onto the sheets, arm wrapping around your son. "Blanket please. We're cold." Seishiro slurred out in a sleepy voice, one hand reaching for you and repeating a gripping motion.
You looked at him in disbelief. "You know that we have to go. Get up already." He opened one eye at that. "Where?" You giggled at his words, palming your face. "We're invited over at my friend's house, remember? She really wants to see Kousei."
His eyes closed back at that, causing you to look at him with a blank expression. "What a hassle. We can be a little late, it won't be that big of a deal. The star and his bodyguard need a bit more nap time."
Before you could snap at him, you stopped yourself as you saw your son reach his tiny arms up his father's neck, snuggling onto him tightly.
Maybe you can spare your baby boys a bit more rest.
MIKAGE REO & KANA
"Hello? Hiroko?" You giggled at Reo's antics, his ear on your stomach as the both of you laid in bed. His theory was that your baby girl should choose her name for herself. That would work like this- Reo would be 'knocking' at the door - leaning against your belly- and 'call out' for her. If she liked the name, she would make herself noticeable somehow.
"'Rich child'? You can't be serious." You asked between laughter, his serious actions just too hilarious. "Don't laugh! We won't be able to know if she likes it or not that way." Only more laughter bubbled up inside of you as you tried to lay still, body slightly jolting.
He mumbled under his breath, crossing out the name on his list. "It's ok, Reo. We don't have to come up with it on the spot, we still got some time", you said after calming down, trying to lighten his pouty expression.
There was only one more name left. He breathed out in disappointment, holding his hand against your swollen belly. "You won't like Kana either, right, little girl?" His last string of hope snapped, but as he was about to cross out the name, you stopped him, your eyes widening. "Reo, look." You lead his hand to the side of your belly, bright smile on your face as you felt a kick against it.
He looked at you in uttermost disbelief, soon being replaced by the brightest smile you had ever seen, giggling as he leaned down to talk to his daughter.
"I knew it! Kana. Kana, Kana, Kana. Was my favorite anyway." He giggled, and you soon followed, your hand gliding through his purple locs as he began to ramble all kind of nonsense to his unborn daughter, as if she was already born.
"And what if it turns out to be a boy in the end?" His eyes snapped up at your face, unreadable expression on his face. "She won't. It's a girl. Kana. Right, little one?" Another kick was visible at the other side of your belly as he rushed his hand on the spot, bright smile plastered back on his face as he looked at you.
"See? I told you."
ITOSHI SAE & LUIZA
"Daddy? When are you coming home? I miss you." Your daughter pouted into the phone at the sight of her father, him returning a loving smile. "I'll be there as soon as you wake up, darling. Until then, listen to your mother and go to bed."
"No! I want to wait for you!" Luiza eyes already began to water as you desperately tried to stop her tears from falling. "Luiza, darling. Didn't you hear what Daddy said?”, the sniffling of his four-year-old daughter hurting him at heart.
He really hated times like this - when he had to be so far away from his family for work. But he already had a plan in mind to make it up.
"Luiza, please, don't cry. I got a surprise for you when I'm home. For the both of you, actually." You both looked at each other in surprise and back at the phone, earning a chuckle from the young man. God - she really resembled you so much-from your hair all the way to her facial expressions and personality, only the eyes and color resemble him.
"What is it?" You asked, curious. "I'm not telling." You began to pout now, waiting for him to continue. "Luiza. You remember which country you were born in?" He ignored you, looking into his phone to find his daughter with squinted eyes, smile on his face once you gave her the phone back, still pouting. "Yes! Spain!" The both of you chuckled at her quick response. "That's right. So I thought, how about we all go over there for vacation once I'm back? But you need to go to bed right now, or we won't go."
That was all it took for your daughter to throw the phone onto the couch, Sae's face twisting in confusion at the shaky screen before him until you picked up the phone, an exhausted huff coming from you and joyful cheers with loud stomping heard in the distance.
"Thank you. I thought I'd never get her to bed."
ISAGI YOIICHI & SHO
"You got this ! You're almost at the goal, don't give up!" You giggled at the sight before you, your husband holding your little one-year-old child under both arms, leading him to the goal while helping him kick the ball.
“And, and”, your husband’s voice grew in excitement as the both of them reached nearer to the goal, your little son giggling away as he kicked the ball with all his might, concentrated look on his face. “Goallll!”
He lifted young Sho up high, spinning him around, earning a joyful laugh from the child. "You are him! You are the best, Sho!" The young boy barely understood anything his father was rambling about except for his name, laughing and giggling like crazy because of his father's funny expressions.
You burst out laughing at Isagi’s loud voice, walking up to join the two in their victory. “Did you see that Y/N? Our son will be just like me, no- even better!”
"Slow down. He still has to learn how to talk and walk proberally." Your words made the man huff out a pity laugh as he lifted his son in his arms, victorious smile on his face. "That's secondary. It's more important that he becomes the best-" He stopped himself at the sight of your stern glance, arms crossed over your chest.
"C'mon, baby! You should support the future number one striker from day one! The whole world will bow before Isagi Sho- the best, the most glorious, the jewel of the crown."
A slight smile twitched up your lips at Yoichi's words. "If I didn't already know that you were a striker, I would've thought you're a commentator." It was his turn to chuckle, now heading to the goal to confiscate the ball. "Alright, Sho. Once more, your talking studies can wait-"
You cleared your throat in a loud manner, his words falling silent at your judging expression.
"Yuppp, talking and walking first."
OLIVER AIKU & ALMA
"Alma. A- L- M- A. See?" Oliver tried his best to teach his five year old girl the alphabet, but it was hard to do so when she barely sparred him a glance. "Now you." His fingers tapped onto the alphabet that was laid in front of him on the table, his little daughter on his lap, playing with her toys.
He breathed out in defeat, his eyes wandering to you in the living room, enjoying your favorite TV show. "Y/NNNN. I can't do it. She doesn't even look." You looked at him and her at the dinner table, a chuckle leaving your lips as your attention turned back to the TV. "You're at it for barely five minutes, Oli'. Maybe do a word that would make her listen?"
A word that would-? Oh, yes, he knew one. He let out a villain - like laugh, his daughter looking at him in confusion. "Candy. Show me the letters and if you're correct, then-"
"No. No more sweets. She already had enough for today." She pouted at that, Oliver ushering her near him. "Mommy doesn't have to know, I'll give you some." Alma's eyebrow twitched up in question, her toys long abandoned on the floor. "But daddy, I can't spell that. It’s too long."
This caught your attention, looking over at them, sensing Oliver's panicked expression. "Shhh! Why would you-" "What did he say, Alma?" Oliver gave her a look of 'please don't tell her I'm not in the mood for trouble tonight' but Alma did just that, with a big grin on her face too, bursting out laughing once you looked at her father in a strict manner. "Oh, is that so?"
Once Alma stopped laughing, she pointed her finger at the letter 'B'.
"Busted!"

𝕚 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦'𝕣𝕖 𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪 𝕔𝕠𝕠𝕝 | 009.
haikyuu x m!reader
masterlist
[name] was the last of his team to step off the bus. he was more tense than usual. probably something to do with the devastating memories that came with facing inarizaki again.
apart of the first years, they all remembered the loss they had suffered after facing the black and white team last year. they had been lucky enough that itachiyama had knocked inarizaki off in the semi-finals in their second nationals, meaning they hadn't faced them since.
it was [name]'s first loss, something that stuck with him every time he played. he could never quite shake the heartache he felt. but it was just a practice match, he needed to remind himself. they had won nationals, surely they could handle a practice match with the team that placed lower than them.
that's right, they were ranked lower than them. [name] couldn't wait to see the look on miya atsumu's face when he mentioned it. the setter needed to be taken down a peg or two.
omoikane raised an eyebrow at the libero, already sensing something was brewing in his mind. "hirabayashi-kun, behave. inarizaki has been kind enough to allow us to train with them"
[name] scowled, offended, "i wasn't going to do anything!"
"we all know what you look like when you're planning something" yuuma slapped him on the shoulder, causing him to trip with the force of the hit. the h/c haired boy merely sent him a glare, shuffling over to his second year counterparts instead.
as they entered the gym inarizaki had already completed their set up, nets ready to go and drills in action. [name] knew it was purposeful, attempting to show off their skills and intimidate takumashii upon arrival. the second and third years remained unfazed, aware of inarizaki's skill levels and playing styles already.
the first years on the other hand were practically shaking like leaves. they looked ready to float away.
"cheer up!" susumu smirked at the pale look on their faces, amused by their fear. [name] sent him a small glare, remembering the shear panic on jun and yuichi's faces the minute they had shown up to their first tournament last year. it was hard to ignore the first time nerves and they could greatly impact the course of a match.
luckily for them, it wasn't a match they needed to worry about. just their reputation as seiichi had so kindly announced on the bus. [name] scowled at the third year boy, he was always stirring up trouble.
[name] followed along behind kousei, heading towards kita shinsuke and ojiro aran to greet them as captains. the older boy beside him bowed first, shaking hands with kita. [name] did the same with aran.
"thank you for having us" kousei spoke up first. "it's good to have another team to practice with"
"yes, it will be beneficial for us too" kita nodded, a small smile on his face.
"they're like robots" aran blanched, both he and [name] merely watched them interact.
[name] snorted, covering his mouth to hide his amusement as kousei side-eyed him. it was a silent threat. behave.
aran held back his own smile at the vice-captain's outburst. he was glad they weren't stuck up like atsumu had tried to tell them. sure, they had played against each other last year but they hadn't properly interacted before.
hopefully, this would be fun as well as beneficial.
this is was painful. [name] glared as he rubbed his raw arms. atsumu had been pelting him with serves for the past 10 mins, non-stop. he had yet to miss one receive but and it was starting to get on both of their nerves. the blonde setter grit his teeth, eye twitching in annoyance.
"you're never going to win whatever stupid challenge is in your head" suna remarked, crossing his arms and raising an eyebrow at the smack that resounded when atsumu served yet another ball towards the libero. seiichi had been the one to suggest he and atsumu work together for their warm ups to put aside whatever rivalry they had going on. they had competed through every step.
the takumashii ace, the traitor, was currently laughing his ass off on the other side of the gym, leaning on kousei to stand up straight as he watched the pair miserably play.
osamu and suna finally reached out to stop atsumu's next move, dragging him away to join everyone else in picking teams for their practice match. they were going to have two matches at once so that all players could play on court.
[name], seeing this, finally dropped to the floor in relief. yuuma held a hand out, biting back an amused grin.
"come on, we shouldn't keep taicho waiting" [name] nodded along in agreement, following the older boy to the group despite his body's reluctance.
"cheer up, heiwa-kun" jun and yuichi flagged him as they approached, easily ready to tease him all day. he groaned internally, slumping his shoulders in a pathetic attempt to ignore them.
"hirabayashi-senpai?" his saviour, the h/c haired boy's head snapped up immediately, expression glowing at the sight of ikehara tomio.
"yes, ikehara-kun?" he immediately shoved jun and yuichi to the side, suddenly full of energy as he hopped over, dragging the first year boy to the other side of the group.
"are we playing in different teams or as our normal team?" he questioned, unaware of his senpai's weird behaviour.
"i think we're playing in our regular team. why? you don't want to?" he hummed, raising an eyebrow at the shy boy. despite still being taller than his upperclassman, the boy cowered at the question, quickly taking it the wrong way.
"no, no! it's not that i'm complaining-" [name] laughed, stunning the boy again. he should probably be used to his smile now, after all, it was usually sent in the first year's direction. [name] pat his shoulder, trying to get him to release some tension.
"don't be so nervous, i'm not going to scold you" his eyes shone with amusement, "we can ask to switch it up, we're going to be playing a lot of matches today so it's fine"
"oh.. okay" tomio nodded slowly. "i wanted to.. i want to play with you, senpai"
[name] froze. his eyes widened slightly, blankly staring at the boy. tomio paused too, now unsure what he had said to warrant such a reaction. he blinked owlishly at [name], silently freaking out. they hadn't even known each other that long, was he being weird? did [name] want to be left alone? was that a weird request-
"oh" [name] slowly smiled, shyly chewing on his lip to stop the grin from widening. "well, i hope we can play together too, ikehara-kun"
the first year boy stood, stunned for a moment before also breaking out into a smile. neither had the chance to say anything, however, as omoikane and kurosu norimune, inarizaki's coach, called for everyone's attention.
"we're going to start with a few sets before our practice match later today. we'll be switching the team members every set so that everyone has a turn to play" kurosu begun to explain, the boys all nodding along to show they were listening. most of the boys were familiar with the way in which things were going to run.
they were quick to split themselves evenly, randomly assigning groups so that they could get on with the matches for the day. after all, they were all eager to get started.
the whistle blew as they the first group moved into position, officially starting the day.
[name] wiped sweat from his brow as they finished yet another set. it had been a couple hours since they started and he was beginning to feel the fatigue. he plopped down to the floor, gulping down his water, frowning when his bottle was empty. he sighed, eyeing the door and deciding whether or not it was worth moving.
a hand appeared in his vision as he glanced back up. his eyes meant miya osamu's, the grey haired twin expectantly raising an eyebrow at him. he held his own water bottle in hand, suna rintarou hovering behind him as they waited. he stared at them in confusion, taking the hand offered anyways and allowing himself to be pulled to his feet.
"thanks" he softly uttered, moving towards the door to find a tap to refill his bottle with. the pair followed behind.
"ya read the court really well" osamu begun the conversation after a few seconds of silence. [name] glanced to his side, briefly squinting his eyes to see whether or not the inarizaki player was being genuine.
he hummed softly, acknowledging the statement. "i like to strategise" he shrugged it off, turning left at the door only to be met with suna standing in front of him.
"taps that way" suna pointed in the other direction, a small amused smile tugging on his lips. [name] felt his face heat up in embarrassment, turning around swiftly and speed walking past them. the pair barely restrained their grins, trailing after him.
"hey, heiwa-kun-" suna went to speak only to be cut off by the said boy.
"it's hirabayashi" he corrected automatically, filling up his water bottle now that they reached the tap. osamu and suna shared a look.
"hirabayashi-kun" he shrugged, "are you always this cold?"
"cold?" he glanced up at him, confused. was he referring to his behaviour? or his tone? had he already ruined any chance of the inarizaki team members liking him? or was it just because he didn't like miya astumu's behaviour?
"stiff?" osamu frowned, trying to think of a better word and scratching his head in thought. "stand-offish, maybe?"
[name] felt horrified, it was like middle school all over again! "what? where did you get that idea? are people talking about me?"
"i guess? you're kinda.. scary" suna thought for a moment before deciding on another word that only sent another pang through the boy.
"scary?" he felt himself wither away, soul leaving his body. "is that why people won't approach me?"
osamu snorted, "you're a really good player, most people find that intimidating. just look at atsumu"
"atsumu's a dick, though" suna deadpanned, "nobody wants to approach him 'cause he's rude"
[name] nodded, agreeing "he's mean" he paused for a second, screwing the lid on his bottle tight. "do i come off as mean?"
"i don't think so, just unapproachable" osamu lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug, unbothered. "hey, where d'ya go to middle school?"
"shiratorizawa middle school, why?"
"how come you didn't go there for high school then?" suna laid an arm on [name]'s head, leaning his weight onto the shorter boy. he huffed, sinking a little with the added weight.
"we moved to osaka so i had to change schools" he shrugged as best he could, unaffected by the change now. they moved back inside, ready to start the final match of the day.
"but you trained with top level players, right?" osamu continued his earlier thought, eyes seemingly digging into [name]'s figure. they were analysing despite the calm, light-hearted nature of the conversation. they were open to being friends but right now they knew in the backs of their minds that they would be enemies on court the minute the whistle blew in a competition. they had already felt the effects of it once.
"sure" [name] nodded, blinking slowly in befuddlement. what was the point of that question? he was obviously searching for a specific answer. "and i'm training with top level players now. what difference does it make?"
osamu merely stared at him for a moment longer in a brief silence before he and suna split from his side to head back to their team.
weird. [name] frowned slightly.
"-and then turnip-head was all geh!” hinata’s rambles were always weird, an experience [name] always looked forward to. he always brightened up his day. this time he was going on about his recent practice match with aoba johsai and karasuno's victory over miyagi prefecture's top 4 team.
from his description of the events that had happened, [name] found it easy to assume that most of seijoh's power relied on their setter, oikawa tooru. he hadn't seen much of the male after he graduated middle school but he had heard word of wakatoshi's constant taunts (not that he knew he was taunting or of the effect it had on oikawa).
”i’m a little surprised you won” hinata’s indignant screech made him immediately rethink his wording. “i mean that aoba johsai is one of the best in the miyagi prefecture for a reason. to win in your first match against them.. you did a good job even if it was a practice match”
the line was silent for a moment, a little awkward. hinata breathing quickened slightly through the speaker before he was bursting with energy once again. “anyways! we've got a new player too now, nish-nishi-nishiya i don't know how to say it but he's a libero like you!"
[name] smiled, ready to tease him. "don't move on, i haven't replaced you"
"aH! i'm not replacing you!" hinata whined. "i can't even say his name! besides, you'll always be my first libero and i'm not going to stop until we beat you!"
this time the silence was a quiet acknowledgement of how far the pair had come since they first met. while [name] had always had an obvious talent for the sport, hinata was a little more clumsy. they complimented each other perfectly, hinata with his innate physical abilities and [name] with his technique. they would make a powerful team one day.
but first, they needed to battle it out on court, after all, they had to see who would win.
bonus!!
"we'll need to get karasuno's guardian deity back" daichi hit his fist against his hand, determined look on his face as the team turned to exit aoba johsai again, brushing off the interruption from oikawa. they were proud of their efforts and the win in the practice match but they knew they had an incomplete team just yet.
"guardian deity?" hinata's face lit up, beaming at the sound of the cool name.
"our libero" tanaka grinned, laughing loudly at the thought of nishinoya returning. "his suspension should almost be over by now"
"libero?" the team turned to the orange-haired first year, ready to explain what a libero is until he continued. "the libero always gets a cool name. like heiwa-kun!"
"you know of heiwa-kun?" kageyama was the first to question him, remembering the times he played against [name] not too long ago. they hadn't expected hinata to know of anyone other than the little giant, especially seeing as he did have a wide range of knowledge in the sport, only really interested in being the ace.
"he's my best friend!" hinata grinned proudly, thumb pointing to his chest in a victorious stance. "he goes to a school in osaka now though.."
"your best friend..?" the team stared dumbfounded, minds blanking out as hinata continued on a tangent, admiration for hirabayashi [name] obvious in the way he spoke.
"yeah! we're gonna go to nationals and play him!" while the sentiment was nice, daichi and sugawara couldn't help but sweatdrop, sharing a look. they were not on a national level just yet.
"one day.. i'm gonna beat him!" hinata's eyes narrowed in determination, grin wide with excitement.
one day..

THE FINAL CHAPTER!!!! VERY EXCITED AND THANKS ALL FOR READING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Read on AO3. content warning: sexual content Summary: The world keeps changing. Word Count: 6536 Chapter 19 Master Post
“After nearly a decade of victims, the Torso— revealed to be longtime taxi driver Karao Saeki— is dead. His body was found in a river in the 17th ward, stabbed to death by an unknown assailant with his eyes pried out of his skull. The Washuu Task Force is unable to determine anything else at the time of reporting.
“In addition, tapes of Saeki communicating with Kousei Kaiko, CEO of Kaiko Industries, have surfaced from a raid of his home. The details will have to wait, however, as sorting out the relevant tapes will take some time, or so claims Koutarou Amon, a lawyer and one of the survivors of the Priest’s orphanage.
“In other news, Sen Takatsuki is holding a press conference today to announce her new work: a graphic novel in collaboration with an unknown artist…”
———
“Listen, Sauce,” Hide stared at Haise from the living room, “I think the suit is more than enough.”
“I-I know!” Haise was still in the bathroom, his hands full of gel and his gaze boring a hole into their mirror. “I just— I should make an effort for this! It’s a press conference for the book— er, comic— no, I mean—!” He sighed. “You know what I mean; it’s important!”
“If you say so!” Hide put up his hands in defense. “Frankly, you look ridiculous, but that’s just me.”
“Hina did this for me for Red Tongues! I-It works!”
“Cool! Still ridiculous.”
Touka’s laugh rang from the pantry.
“T-Touka!”
A month had passed since the incident with the Torso, making it December. After another week’s worth of recovery, Haise was discharged from Taiwa, and he and Sen finally finished their work: The Folly of the Hierophants. Sen asked him multiple times if it was too on the nose, but he reminded her that people don’t know about V like she did.
To kick things off, Shiono and Shoeisha arranged a press conference for the day. It would be Haise and Sen’s first public appearance together, so they had to make it count. At least, that’s what Haise thought of the whole thing.
Not only that, but the news of Kaiko Industries’ possible connection to the Torso was being spread like wildfire; once the story hit the shelves, it was going to fan those flames.
“That’s the idea, at least,” Sen had told him. “But you know the public; a little too stupid for their own good. There’s a brilliant mind among them every now and then, sure, but plucking them out from the masses is always troublesome.” He remembered her looking him up and down then. “Sometimes, though, it’s worth it.”
The memory made him shiver, but it also reinforced his resolve. He had to make sure he was presentable for her sake.
After ten more minutes, he shut the bathroom door, making some minor adjustments to his hair, which he had slicked back. To accompany it, he was wearing a simple black suit and matching tie— the only ‘fancy’ thing in his possession. Hopefully, it would be enough.
Touka peeked out from the kitchen, a peeled banana in her hand. “Wow,” she whistled. “Not bad.”
“Meh,” Hide said. “I still think the hair’s too much. None of that signature Sauce floof, y’know?”
She smacked him lightly on the head. “I think the effort will be appreciated.”
“Thank you, Touka,” Haise said, nodding at her in approval. “I think so, too.”
“Gasp! Is our boy being sassy with me?” Hide’s mouth hung open, a hand on his chest. “You hang out with that Sen girl too much, young man! Respect your roommate!”
Haise laughed. “Sorry, sorry… Maybe it’s the nerves.”
“Oh, yeah; this thing’s gonna be on TV, huh?” Hide fetched the remote. “When was it, again?”
“This afternoon, but you don’t have to watch it; Chie must have something for you to do, especially with the other news that’s been going on.”
The two of them, as its collectors, were also overseeing its distribution with Tatara and the rest of Chì Shé, which was apparently more than a theater company.
Hide waved him off. “She wants a bit of a challenge, at least for today.”
It was weird to Haise that Hide was part of an underground effort to collect information on V. Though, given Chie’s ‘job’, it wasn't exactly weird, but the fact that Hide had worked in close contact with Sen right under Haise’s nose was baffling. He had discovered a side of his best friend that he would have never found out about thanks to— wait a second.
“Hide, did you know about Sen’s connection to…” he gestured vaguely— “everything when you signed me up for my job?”
His roommate looked over, confused. “What?”
Touka rolled her eyes. “C’mon, don’t be stupid. If you two were working together on V stuff, then wouldn’t that mean you knew each other?”
“Oh, that? No, we were working anonymously through Chie,” he explained. “Very sensitive information, y’know, and remember the part where I travel the world? Don’t want people knowing my face or name, right? We actually only figured each other out because I signed you up!”
Touka snickered. “So it was sheer dumb luck?”
“Yeah, yeah.” Hide shook his head. “I’m never gonna live this down, am I?”
“That’s right.” She ruffled his hair with a smirk. “Looks like Mr. Nagachika’s finally cracked, Sasaki.”
Hide opened his mouth to retort, but stopped when he saw Haise smiling. “Don’t do me like this, man.”
“Sorry, sorry…” Haise waved his hand about in a poor attempt at stifling laughter. “It’s just nice to know that even you’re human, Hide.”
“Uh, duh? I am extremely human! I have the proper circuit boards and everything!”
Haise laughed again, then headed for the door. “I gotta go now before I’m late. See you later!”
“I’m still right about the hair, by the way!” Hide called just before the door shut.
After a few ID check-ins with some vaguely familiar guards, Haise found his way into the back room of the building the conference was held at. Sen was waiting for him there, and she was beautiful. She wore a black turtleneck shirt, a blue flared skirt with gold patterning near the hem below her knees, and a cardigan faintly patterned with tiger lilies. Her hair was bound in a single ponytail gathered on one of her shoulders.
“Well, well, well; someone’s dressed up,” she commented upon seeing him arrive.
Haise rubbed his neck. “I-It is a conference, right?” He showed himself off a bit, albeit hesitantly. “Do you… like it?”
“Hm…”
She came up to him and studied him. Her eyes roamed his body, and at some points, he wondered if she was mentally undressing him. He didn’t mind the idea, and was rather used to it now, but he still swallowed while she adjusted his tie and brushed his shoulder. She smelled good, he idly noted, but that was always true.
“And lastly—” she reached up and roughly messed with his hair, ruining a half-hour’s worth of work — “there! Perfect.”
“H-Hey, I worked hard on that…!” he protested, even though he was laughing.
“You don’t have the face for it, sadly.” Sen shrugged and smiled. “I prefer you like this: all wild and messy.”
His spiteful side wanted to punch Hide the next time he saw him.
“Well, in that case—” Haise took her hair tie, making her breath hitch, and gently pulled it off— “that makes two of us.”
Her hair spilled over her shoulders, and she instantly turned scarlet. Recovering quickly, though, she pushed him with a chuckle.
Just then, Shiono appeared from the front. “Oh, Sasaki! Great timing; they just finished getting ready. You can come up whenever you’re ready.”
She fanned out her freshly loosened hair. “Oh, joy… Ready, Haise?”
He felt his stomach churn at the reminder of reality. “Not really, no…”
“Oh, hush— you’ll be fine.” She linked their arms together to reassure him. It worked… sort of. “Smile at the cameras, speak only when spoken to, and try to look straight ahead as much as you can, ‘kay?”
He nodded stiffly. “O-Okay…”
Even with those instructions, the flash of a camera as soon as they stepped out nearly blindsided him. Meanwhile, Sen smiled with familiar grace and practiced ease at the small crowd. He tried to copy her by waving himself, even though he was mostly squinting at the lights that were already beginning to hurt his eyes. He wished his glasses offered protection; this was gonna get bad fast.
There was nowhere to sit, which he expected, but Haise’s stomach sank to the floor when he thought of how long this might take. Combined with the sheer amount of people here, he was cruelly reminded that he was, in fact, dating a celebrity.
Sen took her spot at half of the mics on the table, while he positioned himself next to her at the other half, hands clasped behind his back. Hopefully, he didn’t look ridiculous, though the mere thought of that probably made it true. It was also kinda hot in here; was anyone else hot?
“Well, I certainly wasn’t expecting so many of you,” Sen said once it was silent, chuckling fakely. It snapped him back to attention. “The last time I saw nearly as many was for the announcement of The Black Goat’s Egg!”
Haise actually recalled the event. He had skipped class that day to watch it on TV, since it was in the middle of the day, once Hide assured him a hundred times that he’d get Haise the required notes and papers. Sen had dressed up far more fancily for that than this one, and now that he actually knew her (in more ways than one), he felt that she’d done herself a disservice.
A few more pictures were snapped, and he swore most of them were of him. It made sense, in a way; he was a novelty, or maybe an anomaly, in Sen’s otherwise lone wolf career.
That said, neither her clothes from that day nor the cameras were his main concern. His main concern was, still, the length of the previous presentation. As an avid reader, he hadn’t minded and wanted to pick her mind apart until it was laid out before him in all its glory, but now that he was standing with her as her equal, he found himself dreading the next two hours of his life. And that wasn’t even factoring in the fact this was televised.
“Well, before we get into questions—” Sen’s voice brought Haise back down to earth, as always— “I’d like to say a few words about the creation of this book.
“Firstly, I apologize to anyone willing to read my scribbles for the wait. Once The Hanged Man’s MacGuffin released, I found that my next idea simply wasn’t taking the form I wanted it to. All of the ideas were there, but the moment they left my mind, it turned into garbage, even by my standards!”
A smile and even a few laughs rumbled through the crowd. She was so good at this, Haise thought while playing with the cuff of his jacket. Maybe he wouldn’t have to do anything but stand here, but that also made him feel bad. It also sounded a little tedious.
“A week became a month and a month became a year, yet the page was still blank. And so, my editor, Shiono, suggested I try to turn it into a graphic novel. He said the new format might be inspiring. And so, after much searching, I chose this one: Haise Sasaki!”
At his name, he visibly coughed and tried his best to smile and bow. “H-Hello! I’m… I’m Haise Sasaki, and it’s… it’s such an honor to work with S— Ms. Takatsuki on her first graphic novel!”
It was probably best that he left out the fact that this was also his first graphic novel, and his first officially published work.
Sen, however, had other plans. “I wanted someone with as little experience as me with this sort of thing, but I also wanted someone who was very familiar with the style of my written works. I was very lucky that Haise here—” he flinched when she aggressively pronounced his first name, to the point that he had to adjust his glasses— “checked both boxes and more! He was able to color the canvas where I couldn’t, and the result will be released with the new year.”
She smiled at him, and he caught the familiar glint of affection in her eyes. He returned it with his own, like it was their little secret.
“Now, let’s get to questions.”
The first question was for Sen, and it was probably the most obvious one. “Ms. Takatsuki, what was your source of inspiration for this story?”
“Oh, the usual,” she replied with a knowing smile. “I’ll just say that it’s surprising what you find when you go where people don’t want you to go. I encourage you all to do the same. Experience life and adventure, then maybe you might find what you’re looking for.”
The second one was also for Sen. “Ms. Takatsuki, what were some of the unique challenges presented to you with the graphic novel format?”
The third one? “Ms. Takatsuki—” Yep. Sen.
“Ms. Takatsuki…”
“Ms. Takatsuki!”
For the next hour or so, Sen was pestered over and over by interviewers who were more content with treading familiar ground than taking a chance with a picturesque newbie. Though Haise was partially relieved that there wasn’t much attention on himself, there was a rare instance of irritation welling within him for Sen’s sake, and the way her fake smile widened with each new, more boring question told him she felt the same way. They were supposed to be partners— equals— yet no one was treating them as such.
And then— “Mr. Sasaki?”
He nearly jumped out of his skin. “Y-Yeah?! Er, sorry!” He cleared his throat, suffering some laughs. “Yes?”
This interviewer was younger, and looked a bit more timid than the others. Still, they were the first to take a chance on him. “Could you… Could you tell us what it’s like working with Ms. Takatsuki?”
The silence weighed heavy while the world waited for his answer. “W-Well…”
Sen was looking at him too, with that glimmering, curious gaze of hers. He felt his mouth go dry at the sight.
“Ms. Takatsuki is…”
What could he say that wouldn’t embarrass her? Public opinion wasn’t anything like talking to Hide or Touka; he couldn’t exactly be honest about the whole thing without raising some brows. Then again, this work was going to help connect the families of V to the likes of Donato and Saeki, so really, what was he even worried about?
“She’s amazing,” he said with full sincerity. “And I think you’ll enjoy what we’ve created together.”
Some time was taken for everyone to jot down his answer, and he wondered if he had been too brief. He also felt Sen’s eyes on him, but from the corner of his gaze, he couldn’t tell what she was thinking. He did, however, manage to catch her eye twitch when the next person stood, and begged for her attention. She must have thought her reprieve would last longer.
“Yes?” There was a slight sharpness to her voice.
“What are your thoughts on the ongoing investigation of Kaiko Industries and the Torso?”
A new type of silence settled in: anticipation. What did Sen Takatsuki think about the whole thing? Considering the messages and discussions around her work, it was just the type of thing she wrote and advocated for. Would she continue the pattern?
Some of the audience, particularly the older individuals, looked perturbed by the question. Perhaps they were people who disliked attaching real life events and politics to Sen’s works, who disliked the very idea of entwining the horrors of reality with the reliefs provided by fiction. Haise couldn’t understand that perspective. Art was influenced by real life, was it not? Stories about crime and punishment, corruption and exposure— were those not inherently political? It was like those people wished to drain the story of all life by ignoring its very real connotations.
He looked at her now, and saw she was smiling knowingly.
“They’ll get what they deserve,” she said simply.
“Agh, I wish I could’ve said more!!” Sen, sitting in the passenger’s seat of Shiono’s car, complained.
The conference concluded without a hitch. After questions, Haise and Sen were asked for extra photos, and they revealed the title of the book as well. Shiono was driving them out now, helping them keep a low profile.
Haise, seated at the back of the car, tilted his head. “Why didn’t you?”
“I like writing, that’s all.” He heard the smile in her voice. “It’d be a waste to face an inconvenience with ‘controversy’.”
“You’re such a sap, Sen,” Shiono commented, chuckling.
“Oh, can it.” But she laughed anyway. “Maybe I am, so what?”
“Well, I think it’s charming. Right, Sasaki?”
She shot Haise a playful glare. “Don’t you start.”
He shrugged. “I thought you preferred the truth, Sen.”
Puffing up her cheeks, she reached over the seat to poke him, and he prepared to defend himself, laughing all the while. However, she couldn’t reach, so she just sank back into her seat and huffed.
“You two are unbelievable,” she muttered.
Shiono cackled. “We just get you, kiddo, and you hate it!”
Haise smiled. They did, didn’t they? Not only that, she believed them too. Shiono was understandable; he was her father, and he’d had nothing but a positive impact on her life. Haise was a bit more surprising, looking back. Seven short months, and now Sen Takatsuki trusted him completely? It felt like a dream.
Then again, he recognized himself in her words, and she recognized herself in his art. They were mirrors, two sides of the same coin; it would be weirder if they didn’t understand each other. Maybe it was that fact that pushed her to hire him in the first place.
Shiono and Sen had begun a new conversation, steered more toward the intricacies of marketing. Haise noted that he would be drawing a few extra pieces of promotional work to assist, but before he could formulate an idea, Shiono changed the subject.
“Do you two have plans for dinner?” he asked
“Uh…” Haise wracked his brain. “I-I don’t—”
“I’ve got a few ideas.” Sen turned over to him, smiling. “Remember? You were gonna cook something at my place.”
Haise was confused at first, but swallowed his question. His chin itched wildly as he responded: “Y-Yeah, I remember…”
It must not have been a very good performance, because she playfully rolled her eyes and faced forward.
Shiono whistled as he turned a corner leading to the 6th ward. “You really snagged a good one, kiddo. A cook? Absolutely crazy.”
She smirked. “I know.”
———
Haise didn’t even get the chance to admire Sen’s apartment before she locked the door, leapt into his arms, and crashed their lips together.
He gasped at the sudden contact as it stoked a flame inside of him. He scooped one hand beneath Sen to hold her steady, while the other groped at her ass. When he found a wall to pin her to, she grunted in approval.
“Is this okay…?” she breathed, tilting his head back and kissing his neck.
They hadn’t done this since he woke up in the hospital, and it only now dawned on Haise that that meant it had been a whole month. “Yes…” he gasped desperately, making a sound between a hiss and a moan when he felt her teeth pinch his skin. “Yes, yes…”
Perhaps that month— a bit more, if they were counting the days before he was kidnapped— had been why this felt a little clumsy. The way Sen was mindlessly biting his neck more than kissing it, the way when she found his mouth again, their teeth accidentally clacked, making them laugh— it was like the resort all over again.
Her tongue briefly swiped across his palate, then she bit gently on his bottom lip and tugged far harder. He let out a throaty sigh, leaning with the force, but he made sure to cradle her head so she didn’t hit the wall. Meanwhile, his hands hiked up either side of her skirt, pressing against her tights in  a vain attempt to feel the skin beneath.
Sen broke their kiss to catch her breath. “Tear them,” she said, loosening his tie and unbuttoning his jacket.
Haise helped himself out of the clothing. “What?”
“I mean it—” she let out a sigh when his tongue found the inside of her cheek, chasing the sensation— “Tear them, pry them apart.”
His head was too fuzzy to protest, so instead, after setting her down, he yanked down her skirt, letting it pool on the floor around her feet. Then, he got on his knees and quickly pulled down her tights.
“Haise—!” she began, even as she kicked them off. “I told you to—”
He planted his face into her exposed bush. The effect was immediate as she threw her head back and nearly collapsed on him.
“Fuck—!” she gasped.
He stopped immediately. “You okay?”
He didn’t need to see her glare. “Keep going.”
No complaints there. He followed the pitch and volume of her cries, flicking her clit and teasing her entrance with his tongue. Offhandedly, he remembered some awkward videos Hide had sent him once upon a time, and was almost ashamed at how much he was relying on them now. He was also upset they were working.
She tasted wonderful, though— a cross between sour, sweet, and satisfying. Or maybe those were the hormones talking. Either way, he needed more of her, even if that meant blocking the majority of his airways. He also took one of his fingers and spread her lower lips, massaging them as he sucked her entrance.
Her hands enthusiastically carded his hair, tangling themselves in the black locks, as he lapped up everything that came out of her, wasting nothing. In the meantime, his pants tightened more and more with each lick, cry, and squeeze.
“Bedroom…” Sen managed, half-delirious. “Bedroom, now…”
Haise obeyed her command, removing his face from between her legs and gathering her up in his arms.
“Holy shit…” She clung to him as he carried her over toward the door that he assumed was her bedroom. She planted a few lazy kisses on his cheek and spread open his unbuttoned shirt to access his shoulder. “Wow…”
He nearly tripped on the way there, and she squealed with laughter. “Sorry, sorry,” he said, laughing too.
“It’s fine…” She kissed him, loved him. “Careful, though; don’t get hurt…”
“I won’t.” He relished the feeling of her lips. “Promise…”
He finally identified the bed— a fittingly red color, he vaguely noted— in the dim light of evening, and let Sen fall against the mattress. She grunted at the impact, but the feverish grin on her face told him everything he needed to know. He shed his shirt, tossing it carelessly on the ground, and made to climb on top of her and continue.
“Ah, ah, ah.”
He found his path impeded by her bare foot against his abdomen. It barely hovered over the tent in his pants, teasing it with the ghost of touch. She sat up, more composed now, and far more controlling.
“The pants too.”
He glanced down past it, then took a few steps back. His hands fiddled with the belt, eager to continue—
“Slowly, Haise.”
She crossed one leg over, making a show of it. The display only made him harder, and the way that she teased him by barely lifting a finger— beautiful torture. And she knew it, too. She knew by the sultry sound of her voice, traveling across the room to caress his ears. She knew by the thin string weaving itself into his skin, gently pulling him every which way and encouraging him to obey. A siren’s tapestry, in other words, and one he succumbed to gladly.
She mirrored his actions with her shirt and bra, and there was a flush to her face that told him there was a touch of regret to her orders. She stared hard at his erection the entire time, not looking away for a second. He wasn’t any better; his eyes hungrily roamed her hair, her face, her hips, her stomach, and her breasts, each area with its own, equally tantalizing aspects.
Once Haise stepped out of the pool made of his pants, Sen’s impatience broke out to save them both. In a surprising show of strength, she seized him by the waist and dragged him on top of her, pinning herself between his body and the mattress and trapping him between her legs. Haise propped himself up on an elbow to not completely crush her, but he liked the heat of their chests pressed flush together, and indulged himself as much as he could.
While their tongues danced their familiar dance, Sen’s hand ran up and down his length through his boxers, and he grinded helplessly against the motion until it slipped in to feel the real deal. The other massaged the back of his head, making him shudder.
Meanwhile, his hand found her ass, squeezing as hard as he could without hurting her. She liked the pain, to a degree; at first, he’d been hesitant to comply with her demands, even after her demonstrations at the resort. However, after everything that had happened lately, he disregarded those doubts and gave it his all, and the cry she gave into his mouth was worth it.
She stopped stroking him and tugged on his waistband. Haise didn’t think twice and helped her expose him to open air. He came up for air from her mouth and reached for the nearby drawer, intent on finding the condoms.
However, Sen’s hand clamped around his wrist, cutting him short. He looked back in confusion. “Sen—” even as the request formed itself on his lips, he wanted to stop himself— “we shouldn’t—”
“I want to,” she interrupted, and her grip tightened. “I’m on the pill, you know. The condoms were always more of a precaution.”
He swallowed. Tantalizing curiosity prickled his neck and made him twitch. “But…”
“I want to feel you, Haise.” There was a shine to her eyes that was desperate, pleading. “Please…”
It was so tempting; more than once, it had crossed his mind to ask if she wanted to try this. But he didn’t know anything about her situation regarding birth control, and then to risk something that would only really cause her pain was enough to still his tongue. In hindsight, he should have just asked.
He nodded slightly, then nodded again. “Okay… You’re sure?”
“I wouldn’t be asking if I wasn’t.” She gave an encouraging smile.
Yeah, that was pretty stupid. Still— “If you change your mind, I’ll stop.”
She rolled her eyes. “I know.”
He stroked himself a few times to make sure he was ready, staring into her eyes the entire time. The resolve in her jade irises didn’t diminish in any way. When he moved to position himself, she spread her legs.
“Go on.” She shuddered as his head teased her entrance, which was soaked with her juices. It was more than enough.
Haise easily pressed into her, then saw stars.
It felt completely different from using a condom. Skin against skin, with nothing in between. A fire, no longer restrained, finally allowed to roar and consume everything it could get its hands on. It was such an incredible feeling that Haise nearly came on the spot. Sen seemed to feel it too, moaning and squirming like never before.
“Hah… Sen…”
“Haise… Haise…!”
For all that they read and learned from books, their vocabulary was reduced to unintelligible sounds and the other’s name as Haise moved inside her. It was an addicting sensation; he had a feeling he wouldn’t want to go back to condoms.
Sen seemed to be thinking the same. Her mouth hung open slightly, and her eyes were lidded with pleasure, vaguely focused in his direction. Even the slightest movement made her shiver beneath him. She was ethereal to him, his perfect imperfect person. The many images he had of Sen Takatsuki, the author, paled in comparison to Sen Takatsuki, the person; she got mad, she had moments of sorrow, she grinned and cackled when she was happy, and she was sometimes a bit too arrogant for her own good.
She was so unbelievably human.
He loved it.
He loved her.
Haise captured her lips again, trying to get as close to melting into her as he could. She eagerly reciprocated by wrapping her arms around his neck. He drank her like someone dying of thirst, and she opened herself to him, letting herself be drained.
The tenderness was short-lived. His pace sped up, and their voices grew in volume. Eventually, there was nothing left but Sen’s cries, his gasps, the slapping of their hips, and the feeling that he was going to cum soon. He tried to slow down, hoping to prolong the ecstasy for even a second longer, and busied himself by dragging his mouth over one of her nipples. She arched her back in approval and pulled him closer with her arms.
It wasn’t enough, not by a longshot.
“S-Sen…” he panted, shivering and twitching prematurely. “I’m gonna—”
“Inside me,” she whispered, begged. “Please…!”
It was that plea that gave him the push he needed. He slammed their hips together, burying himself as deep as he could, and spilled into her without a second thought. The rush from filling her up instead of a condom made him desperately sink his teeth into her shoulder. She cried out, a mix of pain and pleasure, tightening her legs around his waist and pushing him further into the area. He filled her for what felt like hours— a perfect, euphoric moment frozen in time, filled with their mixing sweat and breath.
Sen’s lips found the shell of his ear. “I love you,” she whispered, kissing it— a gentle gesture, helping him relax in the blissful tension.
He kissed the bruise he’d made in return. “I love you too.” He did so again, harder. “So much…”
It didn’t end there, though.
After catching their breath, she pulled him into the bathroom. Their first bath with each other took three times as long as a bath without. Haise memorized the image of Sen’s body slick with water and soap.
When she reached for the kettle in the kitchen to prepare tea, he grabbed it for her with one hand, while the other found her breast and squeezed a gasp out of her. The kettle was never put on heat, let alone filled. A sweaty imprint of her torso found itself on her counter, though.
Again and again and again, it seemed neither of them could be satisfied, but when the sun finally dipped below the horizon, they collapsed onto Sen’s bed, finally spent.
Sen was the first to break the pattern of noises: “Holy fuck…”
Haise, who felt like he was going to faint any second, could only say, “Uh huh.”
She struggled to her feet, her skin glistening in with sweat under the few hints of light in the room. “Tea? For… whew… for real, this time.”
He agreed with that sentiment. “I… I’d like that…”
Still, the way her bare hips swayed as she left the room, a trail of what he knew was a mixture of their fluids slowly trickling down her leg, made him think she wanted more. He was too out of it to take her up on it, unfortunately, so he just followed her.
Now that he wasn’t fucking her senseless, Haise finally had the opportunity to actually look at her apartment. The first thing he noticed wasn’t the patio overlooking the ward, the small couch and television, or the shiny metal fridge and kitchen.
No, the first thing he saw were the books.
Tons of them, crammed into shelves that lined the walls, and when there wasn’t enough space on those, they were piled on or around them in differing piles. After a while, though, the shelves stopped, and there were just piles shoved out of the way.
“Wow…” he said, drifting toward the nearest shelf-pile. “You have so many!”
Sen looked over from the kitchen. He tried not to ogle her bare chest. “It’s my actual collection. You like it?”
It really was nothing compared to their office. “‘Like it’? I-I love it!” Despite that, he stopped himself before he touched anything. “Er, may I?”
She gestured freely, smiling. “What’s mine is yours. I just hope there’s something here that lovely little brain of yours hasn’t devoured yet.”
He flushed. “We’ll have to see.”
While she got the kettle out, he examined her shelf— one of them, at least— with more interest. It was an expansion of the ones from their office, no longer restrained by a single space, and like their office, the books were vaguely organized by themes. The morals of war, bullshit politics, complications in criminal investigation, the horror of existence itself…
“What did you think of the conference, by the way?” Sen asked, coming up next to him. “Your first one, right?”
“Yeah…” Haise, far too engrossed in her collection, had to pause and think. “I guess… it was a little dull.”
She laughed. “They usually are.” She found a book and haphazardly paged through it. “Especially if you’re the one doing most of the talking.”
“I’m sorry; I—”
“No unnecessary apologies, remember?” Sen put the book away in a completely different spot and kept searching.
Haise pushed back this time and looked at her. “I meant that I’m sorry for you. You shouldn’t have to go through that and get your time wasted, even if it’s important to spread word.”
She found another book and met his gaze. “Thank you, but… It wasn’t all bad.”
His brow raised. “You sure? You were being bombarded by questions, and you looked—”
“Tired, yes.” She dropped the book without even opening it, and it toppled over a nearby stack. “And irritated, and bored, and a bit disgusted, too. But you were there, so that counted for something.”
It brought a smile to his face. “Sen, I—”
She cut him off. “You called me amazing. Did you mean that?”
He looked away, as if they weren’t completely naked in front of each other and covered in red marks courtesy of the other. “Y-You already know the answer, so—”
“I want to hear you say it.” Her other hand cupped his cheek, making him face her. “Tell me, go on.”
He was immediately sucked into her gaze. “Yeah…”
“Yeah, what?”
His hand settled on her waist. “Yeah, I… I think you’re amazing.”
She stood on her tippy toes and kissed him. “Good. I’m glad. Not so bad, right?”
Still humiliating. “Right…”
She glanced at the shelf again. “Did you find something, by the way?”
He followed her eyes, then spotted something familiar. He took out the book and showed it to her with a smile: Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. “Maybe.”
Sen shook her head, smiling. “Wouldn’t you rather read something new?”
“I-It’s a good story!” he defended. “Besides, it’s a, um, nice reminder of everything… How far we’ve come since we first read it, for instance.”
He was no longer a protagonist of a novel, dancing on the strings designed by the authors of his fate. No, he was the author now, drawing his own path to the future. Him and Sen both; they would chart their own course, speak their own words.
“You’re so sentimental,” she said, right as the kettle let out a hissing noise.
Haise decided to put the book on the counter for later. Sen handed him his cup of tea after a while, and they raised their cups together in a small toast. The silence in the air— and the smell of sex too— was enjoyed for a few minutes. The two of them, every so often, stole a glance at the other.
“What?” an amused Sen asked when she caught him.
Haise tried to hide behind his cup. “N-Nothing…”
“Tell me!”
His face turned a dark red. “Just admiring you…”
She rolled her eyes, but she wasn’t faring much better. “Charmer.”
More silence, more time to think, reflect. So much had changed since the coffee shop. Kazuichi Public Park, the White Blades, Cochlea, the resort, and then…
“What do you think will happen to V?” Haise asked, the thought occurring. “Torso’s dead, but he wasn’t the source of the problem…”
Sen shrugged. “Who knows? We’re attacking a very tightly wound organization. They’ve worked their way into nearly every aspect of everyday life, and many people have lived and died under their control without even knowing. The first leak won’t change anything overnight, so we have to keep fighting.”
His brow furrowed. “You have more information?”
“Of course we do!” She took a smug sip of her tea. “You don’t release information as you obtain it, otherwise your adversaries figure out your strategy and kill you. Better to hoard things and trickle it through a funnel, then watch the foundations collapse.”
He chuckled. “I didn’t think about that. That’s smart.”
“It was Hide’s idea.” She waved him off. “Thank him when you see him.”
“You helped him, didn’t you? You and Chie; don’t count yourself out like that.”
“I guess so.”
“Sen.”
“Alright, alright!” She put up a hand in defense. “Thank you, Haise, for acknowledging my contribution.”
They both laugh at that, hearty and full and bare. It was nice, and Haise treasured the sound.
“We kinda did this backwards, didn’t we?” Sen said suddenly, circling the rim of her cup.
“‘Backwards’?” he repeated.
“Usually you spend some time together with someone before having sex at their apartment.” She shrugged. “That’s all.”
“Oh…” He chuckled. “I guess so.”
She tilted her head, amused. “Just a guess?”
“Well… Who decides what’s ‘forwards’ and ‘backwards’ with this kind of thing?” He took a sip of his tea. “We decide our own paths. We’re, ultimately, the authors of our own story, right?”
Though the interview at the shop had sort of fallen into his lap, Haise had chosen to draw in the first place. He had chosen to go to that coffee shop, chosen to accept that job, and chosen to go to that resort.
Perhaps there were obstacles in the way. His mother, his aunt, the complications of his career choice, Rize, and the Torso were some of them, but his choices had granted him weapons to defeat them. Sen, Hide, Touka, and everyone else that he had befriended over the years came to his aid. In choosing them, they had chosen him in return. And that was life, at the end of the day:
Choose and be chosen. Over and over until the end.
Sen’s smile was as soft as velvet. “How inspiring.”

Listen.
The second summer Ichidai vs Yakushi match is such a personally offensive match to me. This match hurts my heart and soul more than any other match and Tera-san was so necessarily cruel to my good Boy.
So the Ichidai vs Yakushi match obviously ended with Yakushi losing, which ultimately doesn't bother me because if they had won they just would have gone on to lose to Seido anyway. Losing happens, it sucks.
But no what is personally offensive is how they lost, specifically that Tera-san made it Raichi's fault.
Raichi was at fault for the loss in two ways:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One: He made the initial error that caused Ichidai to be in a scoring position
and
Two: He was steps away from getting the out and prolonging the game.
Now, while these instances aren't exactly his fault, and there's no guarantee they would have won had he got the out, he was the ultimate catalyst for their loss and he takes the personal blame for it:
Tumblr media
What is so unfair about Tera-san making it Raichi's "fault" that they lost the game is that there were 3 main factors to Raichi ultimately costing them the game. These 3 factors are:
-Raichi's Past
-Raichi's Love for Baseball
-Raichi's Talent
How do these 3 factors contribute it to being "Raichi's fault"? Let's count them down shall we?
3. Raichi's Past
As we know Raichi and Raizou don't have the best past, and following the divorce, Raichi and Raizou didn't have much for themselves. At the worst (if BatMan Under the Bridge is Canon) they were homeless and at best they were struggling financially and in debt. Raizou couldn't afford to send him to little league and Raichi was unlucky enough to go to a junior high without a baseball team.
This past meant that Raichi didn't get to play baseball until High School, meaning he is wholly inexperienced in the basics of the game. This inexperience often lead to instances of him making errors and his inexperience had an impact on his playing in the Ichidai vs Yakushi match:
Tumblr media
But you know what else leads to Raichi making errors?
2. Raichi's Love for Baseball
It's no secret that Raichi loves baseball. So much so that he often times gets too excited while playing which causes him to shake violently and often to make more errors. Similar to the error he made during the Ichidai vs Yakushi match, in which his teammate has to tell him to calm down.
Tumblr media
What is also significant in Raichi's Love of Baseball is his true and genuine enjoyment and love for the sport. Unlike many of the other characters, Raichi doesn't play to win, Raichi plays because he loves the sport. Raichi seems to acknowledge winning only as a means to playing more games, and cares less about victory than he does about playing the game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This of course makes the loss even more bitter because of how truly he loves the sport and how much he wanted to keep playing that summer with his team.
And finally,
1. Raichi's Talent
Raichi's talent is the final contributing factor for the loss being "his fault" because it was him, through his talent, that got Amahisa Kousei to love and be passionate about baseball again.
Tumblr media
If it hadn't been for Raichi being so unbelievably talented and crushing Manaka, Amahisa may have stayed away from Baseball and Ichidai Sankou may not have been the powerhouse they were without him. Raichi influenced the pitcher that ultimately came around to beat them.
It's unfair enough that Raichi's past, something he had no control over, and one of his best traits, his love for the sport, were factors leading to their lose but even worse, Raichi's own talent was used again him by Tera-san.
All these factors culminated into Yakushi losing against Ichidai. Which was really awful not because they lost but because Tera-san made it Raichi's fault, for which he openly blames himself for.
Raichi not only truly and dearly loves baseball, but he also cares deeply about his team. Yakushi was the first and only team that Raichi has ever played for, and he loves them dearly. So much so that he plays for them, instead of himself, which ultimately causes him to fail.
Tumblr media
And now he feels as though he has let his team down and ruined the summer for the 3rd years, but not just any 3rd years, the pitcher he admires the most, Sanada. He feels as though he let Sanada down.
To which Tera-san rubbed salt in the wound by having Sanada apologize to Raichi for failing to stop them, because he knows Raichi and he knows that Raichi will feel guilty about the loss, which he does.
Tumblr media
To make matters worse, and I've discussed this in length before, but the Ichidai vs Yakushi match comes directly after we get to see Raichi's mom leaving. Like prior in the series we knew that she left Raizou, but now we got to see her leave and why.
Like she left over Raichi's and Raizou's genuine love and obsession with the sport. They loved the sport so much so that she left to avoid being caught up in their lifestyle and coming second to baseball. Immediately after, they lose, which is just so hard to take. Like the Todoroki's lost their wife/mother to baseball and still lost to Ichidai?? Hurtful.
AND to be the absolute icing on the cake, Raichi hasn't reappeared in the manga since his loss. Meaning the last time we truly saw him, tears were streaming down his face as he blamed himself for ruining his teams summer.
So yea, I am pretty personally offended by this match.
TL:DR
Todoroki Raichi is one of the most well written characters and Tera-san did him dirty. Also he's criminally underrated.

Geats Episode 31! Heaven or Hell!
-1. It Doesn't Matter
-2. by Don Toliver
-3. Let's Rock!
Yeah pick one of those, I can't come up with a proper joke.
Spoilers, I guess...
-Oooooh, seems Archimedel's giving them a (more literal) taste for blood.
-"MY LOVELY BOOOOY!"
-I love Garden Grandpa.
-"How would you like the perfect ending match?"
-Tanuki-soba~! Keiwa Style!
-Hello, Sara-neesan!
-Man, I just realized... Neon TV has a lot of potential abuse/neglect evidence, and yet Kousei has far too much money to make any of it stick.
-That's... very depressing, actually.
-Sekai de jyu minna~!
-"Oh come OOOOON! We were having a moment!"
-Ohhhhh
-It's game time.
-Ohhhhh, that's gonna fall like angel island.
-So
-That's the goddess, huh?
-Go Keiwa-kun!
-"Get your ass in gear, Sakurai Keiwa!"
-Noooo, Sara-neechan!
-Focused on Keiwa, huh?
-Kekera's quite impressed with his oshi.
-Ace with the win!
-Her orangeeeees!
-"This game sucks, Buffa. But I'm gonna win it anyway."
-Ready... Fight!
-Holy shit, they got bubbled.
-"It's not just civilians~! It's everybody~! From Riders... to Niram-P~!"
-"Yeah, you just..."
-Holy shit, how has Chirami not been fired out of a cannon yet?
-Seems Samas's slaps are a bit predictable now.
-Tsumuri's faith in Keiwa and Ace is pretty dang sweet.
-Down the hole!
-Oh
-Dropless.
-Oh okay, bye goddess!
-The happiness of others becomes the happiness of the one.
-Stolen to hell.
-"Man, that Goddess is SOOOOOO evil, huh fox kit~?"
-Ah yes... Mom and Pop Sakurai.
-"Somebody has to lose for somebody else to win." That's this way the world unfortunately works.
-Hello, Producer Man.
-Fucking tell him, he's putting his ass on the line for you jerkoffs.
-It's just as we suspected... Ace is just like Neon, a creation of the Goddess.
-I have to wonder if his rage against Beroba was fueled by some kind of... unconscious sibling bond?
-Keiwa's staying out of it.
-"Oh, Nadge-Sparrow."
-I guess Daichi's delivering exposition for today.
-A false idol.
-A. An anamoly advanced all according to an avarice of an abandoning architect.
-Ace Ukiyo. A son sent from heaven to burn on a cross of fire.
-Keiwa has become an antitheist.
-Even at his angriest, he puts everyone else before himself.
-This really is no more sick and twisted a game than the DGP.
-"This game fucking SUCKS!"
-Ohhhhhhh, there he goes!
-I'd have put I Peace here, just sayin'.
-Ohhhhh, he's mad mad.
-Just like Ace was with Neon.
-Fall to hell, Jyamato!
-OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK
-This is quite harsh of you, Takahashi!
-"Or you could make me happy and die! How'd you like that!?"
-Keiwa's gone. ...he won't be gone forever, definitely not, but.
-Yo, Ace.
-"Tycoon's gone. It's time for you, Geats."
-Heaven or Hell. Let's rock.
-OHHHHH
-HE ATE HIS DAD
-STOP TALKING OLD MAN WHAT THE FUCK
-Archimedel. Father of the Jyamato.
-DAICHI'S FUCKING FACE
-WHAT NO YOU DON'T JUST END LIKE THAT
-Oh shit, Ziin's back.
-Lamentation's finally over next week.
-I can only imagine how cruelly it'd end.

As insomnia struck again... here's an ask...
How about some more Taneko headcanons?
Neon occasionally gets invited to society events, so she gets to bring Keiwa as her plus-one. He's always dumbstruck by her being all dressed to the nines and feels like the luckiest man in the room having her on his arm
Keiwa always ends up carrying her piggyback at the end of these events because Neon insists on wearing heels so as to not appear so short next to him. He always teases her about this and Neon would just pout at him until he apologizes
They usually run into Ace at these events and, inevitably, gets teased when they show up in matching outfits or act affectionate. And Ace can't help but point out to Keiwa how pretty Neon is which makes him go all moon-eyed
Keiwa has met Neon's parents a few times but was quite tense during these meetings- between how they treated Neon and Kousei's involvement in the DGP, Keiwa's not very impressed by either of them. He tries to be civil for Neon's sake
Neon has a small collection of cat and tanuki plushies decorating all corners of her room, which were given to her by Keiwa who wins them for her at crane/arcade games or gashapon machines (he does try very hard lol)

AK anon is here -again- 🙊💛. I really wanna request a matchup with Amahisa but i have never done that before so kinda unsure how to do so but i will give it a go:
1- weak. 2- strong. 3- Insightful. 4- Cool (im not tho🤦‍♀️)
Orange (🍊): I am not very creative like you -🥺- so my ideas are very basic, but something like how he would approach a person like me ? I really can't imagine myself being with somebody like kousei who is so opposite. (personality wise). Ppl around think im cool, strong, independent women, laid back, chill etc .. but really im not like that, and i usually admire ppl who are like that (and like Kousei too). But what ppl see from outside is way different from inside ~~~ but ~~~~~ yeah ~~~~~ god i feel shy idk why 🤦‍♀️🙊🙈💛. Also, thank you for writing for DNA. I really enjoy my time on your blog.
omg no worries! usually in matchups you would give your info and then i would choose who to match you up with - but don't worry, i'd be happy to write one for you and amahisa (plus i can't see you with anyone else now LOLL)!
i think you and AMAHISA KOUSEI would be a perfect match particularly because you're opposites! he's a walking contradiction - whimsical but observant; carefree but invested; nonchalant but hardworking. so i think he'd really appreciate you being a bit of a contradiction yourself! sometimes he's so honest to the point that people can't tell if he's joking or not - so i think he sees your struggle in that area with being misunderstood or seen differently than you might think you act. and even if you don't think you're cool yourself - he certainly would, but not necessarily in the way others might perceive you. i think he'd want to get to know you at a raw, deep level - it might take you a while to be that vulnerable with him and open up, but he's determined to crack that shell and support you. and for someone who may get bored with one thing and move on to the next - he'd find you so interesting that he'd never get tired of you.
bit of drabble / headcanon under the cut! a bit longer than i usually do too ehehe 💕
Tumblr media
❀ FIRST IMPRESSIONS
amahisa kousei is certainly one to say what he means, and you don't exactly understand that at first
his pickup lines aren't suave or clever - he'll literally tell you that you're pretty, smart, beautiful - with such a nonchalant face and then go back to doing his own thing
while you think you're gawking and panicking over what he's saying, you're really just staring at him with a straight face and a slow nod
"amahisa's always trying to get your attention... how are you always so cool about it? isn't he like, a big star on the baseball team?"
your friend taps your shoulder as you leave class, and you mumble back,
"he can't be that good at baseball if he has time to flirt like this all the time..."
your face is burning, but you play it off - sure, he's pretty handsome and charismatic. a bit of a mystery, even - but you do tend to wonder why he focuses on you specifically
it isn't until after you've parted with your friend and walked ten minutes to the bus stop that you realize something very important
you forgot your freaking laptop.
huffing, you start a light jog back but pause when you glance at your watch - there's no way you'll get there and back in time, and the next bus after that is in another half hour
and you definitely needed to grab your next batch of textbooks from home, or you'd miss your next class
"hey! you're pretty fast, you know? practically sprinted out of the classroom!"
when you look up, who else do you nearly run into but amahisa holding your laptop?
you blink once, twice. then you blurt out,
"you're a lot more thoughtful than you let on."
he lets out a full laugh, "and you're a lot less scary than you seem!"
you frown, asking what he means - to which he responds,
"everyone always says how intimidating and strong you are. but you're getting flustered right now, aren't you?"
"i- i- no i'm not! and i don't mean to look scary at all! that's just how people see me for some reason..."
you're feeling self-conscious, even when he gives you an easygoing laugh, and you're certainly thrown off when he ruffles your hair,
"you shouldn't care so much how people see you! except for me maybe, because i see you as pretty interesting."
you roll your eyes, taking the laptop from him, but can't seem to hide a slight smile from his watchful golden eyes
"see you later then, yeah?"
"we'll have to see about that. but i guess i owe you for this - so thanks... amahisa."
"it's kousei," he smiles before waving and taking off
"how am i supposed to talk to him if he doesn't even ask for my number..." you grumble
but when you pull your laptop out next class, a sticky note tumbles from it with his phone number and a "coffee soon?" on it - that boy certainly is full of surprises.
hope you enjoyed, i'm so happy i finally got to write for you and kousei - i love getting asks from you and think the two of you would make such an amazing couple ehe 💕

𝕚 𝕥𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕜 𝕪𝕠𝕦'𝕣𝕖 𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕝𝕝𝕪 𝕔𝕠𝕠𝕝 | 006.
haikyuu x m!reader
masterlist
after [name]'s meeting with the inarizaki team they were more determined than ever to beat the recent powerhouse. atsumu's comments had set a fire alight in the team, anger bubbling as they walked out onto court b. they glared at the black and white team heading to the benches to put their bags down and start their warm ups.
omoikane called them around before they begun their own sets of warm ups. "i don't want you showing off too much today, alright? while i know you're confident, this is a national team, we need to stay on guard"
"osu!" they called, nodding along. [name] headed over to the side, beginning his stretches while keeping an eye on the twins. he had watched videos of their plays before, having studied every team at nationals and while he would admit they were good they were also impulsive and random. their team was able to adjust quite well and that would only cause more of a problem for takumashii.
"don't think too hard, heiwa-kun, it doesn't match your face" kumagai susumu gave him a small polite smile, patting his head as he bent down to join [name] in stretching.
the said boy merely huffed, sending susumu a slight glare. he bent forwards again, fingers reaching for his toes. he attempted to calm his breathing. in, out, in, out.
[name] cracked his neck to the side, watching as atsumu showed off his sets, effectively making use of his spikers. he gritted his teeth in annoyance, he knew atsumu was a good setter, he had every right to be confident and that only pissed him off more. as much as he hated to admit it, inarizaki were a team worth their national title and this win wouldn't be an easy one.
soon enough it was their turn to 'assert dominance' as hattori itsuki so gracefully put it. kousei rolled his eyes from beside the said boy, albeit used to the team's antics.
("senpai, please take this seriously" "hm? i know, it's our chance to assert our dominance!" "that's not what i meant")
they stepped up, kousei twirling a ball around in his hands as he ordered the team to line up in two lines, half hitting his sets and the others serving the ball.
[name] walked to the other side of the court, ready to receive the serves. immediately, the change in his demeanour was obvious, a sort of quiet air surrounding him as he bent low, eyes never leaving the ball despite the constant distractions around.
his concentration was unwavering as his movements were precise and rehearsed. he had nothing to worry about, it was volleyball, he knew volleyball. all he had to do was perform as usual and they would be fine.
the sound of a whistle blowing soon drew his attention to omoikane sensei. it was time.
they stepped up to the line, various emotions splayed across their faces as they faced the inarizaki team. his sharp eyes surveyed the team, falling on atsumu who glared back at him just as fiercely. although he looked evidently more excited than he had in their meeting yesterday. the setter was almost buzzing with energy, the urge to play filling him. [name] knew that feeling well, the jittery nerves, desperate to be released.
both player's expressions hardened the minute they realised they were eyeing each other however, neither over their discussion. [name] blankly watched as atsumu narrowed his eyes, message clear as day. 'i'm going to crush you'.
pfft, as if. their staredown was finally broken when osamu jabbed his twin in the side with his elbow, seemingly reprimanding him, distaste obvious in his expression. atsumu bristled, crossing his arms and snapping back. [name] hid a small amused grin when they both settled down the instant their captain's eyes landed on them.
the start of the game was always the most daunting bit, before anything had happened yet. the time when [name] knew they were most likely to give in to their negative thoughts. it would throw the whole game to have doubts now.
seeing is believing. he bitterly thought, chewing on his lip as they bowed to each other.
"we got this, don't look so worried, heiwa-kun!" fujiwara seiichi, the team's budding wing spiker, grinned down at him, landing a slap to his back in an attempt to 'cheer him up'. the future ace sure had more strength than he realised.
"stop slapping me, seiichi-senpai" [name] scowled, dodging the second incoming hit in favour of joining takumi and kousei in the back line to start the match. takumi raised a brow at seiichi, scaring the second year into taking his place on court before he could tease their libero any further.
the whistle rung out again as they all settled into their spots. the match started off strong with a serve from atsumu. the only difference was that, while it would have intimidated other teams, [name] merely bent low hands overhead to receive the ball. the effortlessness of his movements, calculated and calm hit a nerve in the blonde setter. his teeth gritted together, moving to his position when akagi michinari received the spike from takumashii's ace.
the look of pure annoyance on atsumu's face, [name] had to admit, was pleasing to say the least. this was going to be fun.
atsumu barrelled spike after spike at [name]. the h/c haired boy huffed, swiping a hand over his forehead, grimacing at the amount of sweat. it was too early in the game for it to be this bad. he sighed heavily, trying to stave off the frustration brewing. the first set was not going in their favour, 17-12 and he needed to stay focused so that it didn't continue that way.
his guard never faltered though, eyes never leaving the ball. despite the persistence of inarizaki's spikers, not once did he fall for their tricks. he wasn't perfect, he knew that as he missed ball after ball by inches but he knew what he was doing. all he had to do was adjust to their plays.
he cracked his knuckles as his fingers cramped slightly, shaking them out and focusing on suna rintarou's technique. the strange bending at the waist had thrown him off at first, putting him off the receive, missing the ball. he had glared at the smirk he received from the fox eyed middle blocker. they were taunting him.
and it was working.
"give yourself a break" kousei smacked him in the face with his towel, covering his head to avoid having to see the irritation written across his expression anymore. "you're doing fine"
[name] grunted, pouting slightly as he wiped down his skin. "i know that" he huffed, indignant. glaring at the inarizaki team over the top of his towel, covering the bottom of his face. atsumu met his glare head on, small smirk on his face. he was slapped upside the head by his twin, osamu giving him a look of disgust and a scolding.
"don't get cocky" takumi shook his head disapprovingly, drawing the libero's attention. [name] felt his eye twitch in annoyance as his head snapped to the captain.
"i'm not!" he stomped, disbelief clear at the accusation.
"woah, heiwa-kun, no need to get angry" ichikawa yuuma pat his head with a bright smile, oblivious to the boy's struggle.
he merely grit his teeth, shifting his glare to his teammates.
"what'd we do to him?" naomura kichirou cowered with seki hikaru who shrugged, both sweatdropping at their libero's expression, turning away to avoid angering him further.
he takes it back, this was not fun. [name] grunted, body leaning back with the force of ojiro aran's spike. it wasn't anything new, he had had enough practice against ushijima but the inconsistency of inarizaki's attacks was surely something admirable. he hadn't realised before how much they really switched up, but maybe that was something that they adapted to play his team, specifically.
"tired, heiwa-kun?" suna rintarou grinned a sly smile, panting opposite him. he blinked, knowing he couldn't let them get to him anymore than he already had. suna's style was something that pissed him off, constantly having to be on guard, aiming perfect receives. he was starting to hate this.
"we're just getting started" he feigned innocence, tilting his head slightly. "how could anyone possibly be tired yet?"
despite his words, the whole court was filled with pained faces. the first set had slowly inched its way to the 30s. the match had garnered quite a crowd now, going on much longer than some other teams already. the second day was typically a day where matches ended swiftly, knocking out the teams who were not yet up to national standard, unused to the fierce competition.
this meant that the stands were filled with potential opponents, all cringing at the scoreboard in sympathy. 32-31 inarizaki's match point. they really were only getting started but it felt as if they had been playing for hours.
just one more point. that's how it always went.
unfortunately it wasn't in their favour this time. atsumu cheered loudly, hands reaching up to high five osamu. the grey haired twin gave a small smile, less enthusiastically hitting atsumu's palms. they finally closed the first set, securing their lead.
the takumashii libero groaned, rolling over onto his back, mind replaying that last botched receive over and over.
"cheer up, heiwa, we've still got a long way to go" jun's lazy expression appeared above him, yuichi nodding beside him, hand holding a towel out. he took jun's outstretched hand, allowing himself to be pulled to his feet. he knew they were right.
he followed them towards the team, all huddled in a circle.
"we lost the first set, and that's okay" takumi begun, trying not to let them dwell too much on it. "we held them off well and we know our rhythms now, we'll just take back the second and third sets!"
"osu!" they all shouted, firmly trying to bring back their belief in themselves.
the second set went by much quicker than either team had anticipated. takumashii put all the pressure they could on atsumu, attempting to mess up his sets. so far it was working. [name] focused on making sure their defence was a solid as possible, pride blooming in his chest the higher their score went.
the inarizaki team's expressions only added to that. suna stared at him, calculating and cold. there were no more taunts thrown around. the team begun to argue, atsumu and osamu's impulsive behaviour running wild.
it was exactly as [name] predicted. he bit back a smirk, readying himself for atsumu's next serve.
-
"what do you think, heiwa-kun?" takumi glanced at [name], he and kousei staring expectantly. omoikane held their whiteboard up, allowing the team's captain duo to share their input.
"i think we target miya atsumu-san" he spoke plainly, purely thinking strategically despite his growing rivalry with the blonde setter. "but not with hits or serves, we put pressure on his sets, shut down his spikers, concentrate on blocking. he's impulsive and he can often get angry at his own teammates. we'll use that, he'll use miya osamu-san more often too so we need to be wary of him"
"you're sure it will work?" kousei raised an eyebrow, not doubting, they never doubted their libero, but clarifying he was sure.
"positive" he nodded, eyes finally raising from the board, "we only need him to break just enough to catch him off guard"
then the rest would fall into place.
-
atsumu was known for his powerful jump serve. everyone knew that, he was constantly praised for his ability. but this one was different. he only took 4 steps back, positioning varying from his usual spike serve. [name]'s eyebrows furrowed, watching carefully.
osamu's mutter caught his attention, "he's trying that now? in the middle of a game? is he serious?"
suna shrugged, hands reaching up to cover the back of his head, obviously not trusting atsumu's skill with whatever he seemed to be trying.
the takumashii libero tensed, shifting to be able to react accordingly. as atsumu threw the ball up, hand coming up to hit it [name] realised where he had seen that type of serve before.
he moved forwards, shouting out to his teammates "i got it!" seiichi and hikaru shifted, allowing him to step closer to the front line, swiftly pulling off an overhead receive to kousei. the said setter tossed to takumi, the ace quickly slamming the ball down before inarizaki was fast enough to react.
atsumu looked the most angered he had been all match. fists clenched and glare harsh. [name] didn't try teasing him, he knew they had done enough to shake the team up, there was no point instigating anything further.
after all, this was their turning point. set 2, 24-17, takumashii set point.
takumashii had come into this match prepared. prepared to win and prepared to lose. they knew they had worked hard to get where they were. but no matter what they had done before, nobody could have anticipated this.
[name] was taking a beating. much like their earlier strategy to put pressure on atsumu, inarizaki turned it around, instead pressuring [name]. his knees were beginning to feel weak but he knew he had to push through for his team. he couldn't let them go home so early!
he dropped painfully, landing harsher than usual to dig ojiro's spike. the poor receive didn't bother kousei, easily utilising it for takumashii's offence but they were all watching [name] closely. they had never seen him get so tired, so slow. his movements were heavy and strained, nothing like their heiwa-kun.
he pushed himself up, slightly dizzy as he tried to follow the ball's movements. his head was spinning, thoughts jumbled together. he didn't know how to get himself out. the third set was dragging on and on and the longer [name] played, the more he struggled to push himself back up.
"he's lasting longer than i thought" akagi whistled lowly as [name] positioned himself wrongly to receive osamu's spike, sending it out of bounds. "he's impressive for sure"
"he's not breaking fast enough" atsumu scowled as takumashii called a timeout. his eyes followed the tired boy closely, narrowed in concentration. his team knew that atsumu was secretly enjoying this match, he hated playing weak teams and this was surely an exhilarating game. they had all heard his praise for the h/c haired libero, desperate to see him in action.
he didn't disappoint.
[name] could barely think, everything was too loud in here, he could barely hear himself. win, win, win. he knew he wanted to, he needed to. he had to get through this for his team, he-
"heiwa-kun! you're getting sloppy!" yuichi slapped him on the back, instantly snapping him out of his head. the whole team eyed the first years, surprised. takumi immediately made to scold him but jun interrupted first.
"yeah, i don't think i've ever seen anyone walk all over you like that" he laughed, relieving the team when they noticed the annoyance start to show on [name]'s face. any emotion was better than none.
"shut up!" he muttered, crossing his arms and huffing as he looked away. he knew jun and yuichi would never let him live it down if he flubbed a receive anymore than he had this game. "i'd like to see you try!"
"pfft, no way" jun shook his head immediately, hands raising in defence. "i couldn't do what you do"
"but you can, heiwa-kun" yuichi reasoned, hand reaching up to [name]'s head, shaking it slightly. "show us why you have that nickname"
he raised his head to stare at them. most people would have worried at the blank look, thinking the encouragement hadn't worked but they could all tell. he had that fire in his eyes again.
the calm stare scared suna as he stepped up to the serving line, ball in hand. there was a different air around the takumashii libero. he breathed softly, posture relaxed, position familiar. he looked like a lion, lying in wait for its prey to fall right into his lap. he knew exactly what he was doing.
the whistle rung out, shaking suna from his gaze, glancing away and focusing on his serve. he was right there, ready for it.
kousei tossed swiftly to itsuki, the wing spiker hitting it straight down along the line of the court. a perfect line shot. he clapped hands with seiichi beside him. 24-23 inarizaki match point.
keep them on their toes, itsuki's voice rung through [name]'s head as he watched the team celebrate their point. he stretched his neck briefly as he sunk down into position again, this time takumi stood beside him, readying himself to serve.
the captain threw the ball up, performing his usual spike serve, sending it towards osamu. [name]'s eyes followed atsumu's movements, waiting for any sign of his next move. everything felt slower, the air was heavier, his breathing loud in his ears. suna was running, ojiro coming from the back on the opposite side. a synchro attack? no.
[name] noticed it first, the slight flex of his wrist, the change in focus. he shifted forwards before anyone else on his team, calling out "mine!" as his voice cut through the chaos. he dove towards the net, catching atsumu's setter dump right before it hit the floor.
the blonde's eyes widened as his feet hit the floor, staring at [name] in shock. there shouldn't have been anyway for him to notice, no one ever noticed.
"kousei!" [name]'s called out, rolling out of the way, jolting the setter into action. the black haired vice-captain sprung up, running over and spinning to toss across the court. takumi was already there, running up, hand coming up to meet the ball perfectly.
it was a perfect set up.
thud.
[name] sucked in a breath, eyes wide as he stared at the ball that bounced by his feet. on their side of the court. it was on their side of the court.
he didn't move, shocked. there wasn't any noise, everyone too stunned to properly process it. when he finally looked up, inarizaki was cheering, patting each other on the back, turned away from takumashii already. he didn't understand what had happened.
"come on" kousei was pulling at his arm, pulling him off the floor. "heiwa-kun, get up"
[name] stood bitterly, now staring at the score board with disdain. he couldn't believe the moment had finally come. he knew it was inevitable, it had to happen at some point, but the pain in his heart was still much worse than he had ever imagined it to be.
it wasn't enough. he wasn't enough.
the tears stung his eyes, hands clenched in fists by his side as he scowled at the ground. had it been any other situation he knew the team would have teased him for the rare show of emotion but all they could do right now was collect their things and head home.
they had lost.
