Cooking companions is actually so interesting just by premise alone... like... the setup that the MC has come to this remote cabin with your closest friends only for the twist that not only wasn’t this some simple vacation, but you weren’t even apart of the group in the first place. This group came to your home and you took them in with the intent to tear them to shreds and eat them later. Yet, the illusion of being their close friend is what makes it so good. The group include you in conversations that involve info only they would personally know, when they reveal their trauma once you get to full hearts it’s as if your best friend is opening up to you, you’re tricked into thinking the MC ever had a true emotional connection to these people is so riveting and horrifying.

Despite being a total stranger to this group, they treat you as one of their own.

Because they’re all strangers, as well.

Theyre all just acquaintances, the only ones who actively get along with each other are Gregor and Anatoly (though Mariah and Anatoly are mentioned to be pretty close as well after her death, we just don’t see them interact like that too much, probably because Mariah suffers from “first character to die and thus not much is learned about them until after they’re gone” disease). They aren’t as close as we think, they were merely brought together by the circumstances that led them to seek shelter in your cabin. They’re putting all their trust into you because you provided them shelter and support, just like they’re putting all their trust into each other to stick together and stay safe.

They just needed protection, they were vulnerable.

And you know how you respond?

You use all their resources to make a single meal on the first day at your cabin- something they only fully realize until afterwards- and you drive them to self sacrifice so they can feed their friends.

Because you were never their friend.

Because you were never even human.
