That big buck that grows old in every suburb, despite crossing more roads every day then the average pedestrian, is the sacred animal of a minor and secret deity that protects jaywalkers.

She sits and waits (and sits and waits) and has been since before she knew what waiting meant. She waits so long, she forgets what for. She waits through years sitting, years of feeling like her bones are not her own, like the bow is her hair is tying the pile of who she once could have been together.
She is seven years old when she dares to stand up.
So she lashes out. She tells Mother she doesn’t want to sit any longer. That she wants to run and climb and cut her hair off at the roots. Mother fumes, screams the way she would assume a fish sounds screaming underwater. Quietly.
How quiet Mother is when she yells. As if she learned how to be angry prettily. It makes her want to cry.
Mother tells her no boy will find her pretty, if she lashes out like this.
And oh, how she longs to be pretty.
Later, Father comes home to a quiet house. They’re sitting; waiting. She doesn’t stand up.
—
She is twelve years old, when it happens again. She doesn’t mean to stand, doesn’t mean to do anything but sit and wait, but she sees the girl with stringy red hair and old wrinkled clothing and she feels like diving into the ocean, screaming where no one can hear her. It’s freeing, at least a little bit, standing up in a way that won’t get her yelled at to sit back down.
She comes home covered in guilt. She comes home covered in regret.
Her footsteps are too loud and her hair falls over her face and Mother looks like a fish out of water.
Good, she thinks, maybe now she won’t have to be so quiet.
Mother says, “pretty girls are quiet.”
She hears, “quiet girls are pretty.”
Oh, how she longs to be pretty.
So she neatens her hair, crosses her legs under the table, hangs herself out to dry and decides that guilt has no place in pretty girls.
Anne is sweet to her, which doesn’t make it easier.
But it does make her question what being sweet means. Makes her wonder if some people are just sweet; just because.
She thinks Billy is sweet.
She is wrong.
She is seventeen when she has no choice anymore. She stands and screams and rips the bow right out of her hair — and she doesn’t fall apart, she doesn’t fly away.
She wishes Mother could do the same.
She has learned that pretty girls come in all forms. That pretty girls wear lace gloves, and silky dresses and woven hats. And pretty girls run in the rain and march right into town hall and stand up—
For the people that they love.
It is not their groomed hair and flawless skin that make them pretty; it is their scream, their bite. A fish out of water that dares to lives on. Learns to breathe anew.
And for the life of her, Josie thinks she can do that, too.

What I really want is a bait-and-switch "ancient aliens" documentary that starts generically with the narrator ponderously asking questions out loud over pictures of hieroglyphs with filters then the rest of the documentary is entirely intricately tracing out the racist roots of the conspiracy theory.

build a paper plane (to float to you)
pairing: kl words: 24.1k chapters: 1/1
“It’s not like I cut myself off from all civilization.” Keith says. “Shiro’s neighbours are home—”
“I don’t think you’ve ever talked to Shiro’s neighbours.”
“Would it make you feel better if I introduced myself to Shiro’s neighbours?”
“It would make me feel better if you had told me that you were going to be alone this winter break.” Lance grumbles lowly, leaning back until his shoulders hit the chair behind him.
“I’m telling you now.”
Lance rubs his hand over his face, tries not to sound frustrated. “Why are you telling me now?”
Keith falters, thinks over his words. Lance bets he doesn’t know why he’s telling him now either. “Because I thought you should know.” He finally settles on. Because you can’t do anything about it.
--
In which Lance travels across 1,681 kilometers, sees the sky and the water meet for the first time, and falls in more ways than one.
