WAtched Kubricks Fear and DEsire and....Hooo boy
SO I love looking into the early works of auteurs, cause despite what you hear they seldom arrive fully formed ,but with benefit of hindsight you can see the start of brilllaince.SO I decided to check out the first film of Stanley Kubrick .If you wanna know my credentials ,I am not a super fan but I am fairly well versed in Kubrick ,having seen most of his features with the exceptions this film ,Killers Kiss ,The Killing,Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut (THough I only saw Clockwork Orange and Lolita once a long time ago and I dont remeber the second half of Full Metal Jacket AT ALL).Also for those curious my top 5 is 5.PAths of Glory 4. Sparticus 3.The Shining 2.2001 1.Dr Strangelove and I am just stalling cause Fear and Desire SUCKS ,it is....hilariously terrible .Like you do have seeds of the filmaker to be:IT looks gorgeous with the way it is shot and it dives int ant war themes (Kubrick loves anti war themes ).I also like the performance of FRank Silveraand the idea that its a nebulouys alternate relaity .....But all the rest of the acting is terrible ,the dialogue is pretentious, the constant voice overs are grating ,and its just unintentionally funny ,especially when one soldier declares himself a fish after going insane.I was laughing part of the time and bored the rest .......This is easilly his worst film that I have seen so far

#tag talk#an hour into space odyssey and it finally gets good cause they introduce Hal#ten minutes after the person I was watching with gave up and went to bed.#Kubrick please this first hour was fucking boring as hell#I heard so much about how the cut between the apes to modern times is so good but genuinely I paused it and rewound five times while laughin#like... this? this is the scene transition I've heard people fan over?#anyway. I muted the movie audio and put Nyan cat and ancient aliens and stayin alive over different scenes and it was great#gonna hang on to the rest of the movie because Hal just murdered someone so maybe it's good enough to watch with someone#ngl this is why I sometimes prefer watching movies alone. I can watch a bad movie with no fear of what my companion thinks#I don't have to hold room for “oh no what if they're not enjoying it? what if they wish we were watching something else”#it always comes down to that damn social anxiety doesn't it#like. I'm not interested in watching cats 2019 really. though I've gotten part way through it with various people#but I genuinely think I could watch the whole thing if I were alone. I don't care enough to. but I think I could#because watching the cats movie with someone sparks that secondhand embarrassment and cringe#anyway go watch that contrapoints video on cringe and shame and social behavior policing it's pretty good#all this to say. 2001 a space odyssey is very very boring#like. it's slow but not in the way Jaws is slow. that one actually succeeds with the anticipation and suspense. space odyssey doesn't#maybe it's partly because I've read the book? (Arthur C Clarke sci-fi is mid that's my hot take) but I don't feel like that's it#there's just no suspense where there obviously is supposed to be. the grand symphonic music in the background feels paper thin veneer#it's a grandiose front to a hollow scene.#also the flight stewardesses supposed to be walking in zero g with velcro shoes are doing such a bad job of it.#literally the first scene we see the shoes they zoom in and we explicitly see her rebalance catch her weight#CATCH HER WEIGHT - IN ZERO GRAVITY?????#anyway. I'm mad about that

Fear Kubrick from Cube x Cursed x Curious (aka C^3). Such a fun anime that just kinda got overlooked and then forgotten. Art by the incredible Kantoku.

Remembering Gerald Fried and Oliver Wood
Here is my combined remembrance of two entertainers we lost this weekend:
Remembering Gerald Fried 1928-2023
Oscar winning composer Gerald Fried as died at 95. He was a close collaborator with Stanley Kubrick composing his films Day of the Fight, Fear and Desire, Killer's Kiss, The Killing, and Paths of Glory. Music played a vital role in all of those films and the last two are quite memorable.
Tumblr media
One of the Star Trek soundtrack albums from Fried
Fried also composed a lot of memorable music in television including Gilligan's Island (CBS 1964-1967), Star Trek (NBC 1966-1969), and Roots (ABC 1977).
The link above is the obit from Hollywood Reporter.
Oliver Wood 1942-2023
Cinematographer Oliver Wood has died at 80. He was director of photography on Miami Vice (NBC 1984-1989), Die Hard 2, John Woo’s phenomenal Face/Off, The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum.

Can I ask you for what it is about Hal you like so much you based your username on him? I think he's a good character tho he was never a favorite of mine so I am curious
Tumblr media
1. i am a big fan of robots (/robot adjacent things such as AI) on like... an aesthetic + thematic level :)
i like the look of machinery and one day i hope to be artistically strong enough to make really cool and complex robot illustrations + designs [shoutout to everyone who gives him glowing circuitry btw... ooooh glowey :) can never go wrong with that]
plus, exploring the idea of a person that isn't human.. ough. yes
minorities who don't conform to society (easily or at all) such as people who are neurodivergent, queer, etc. projecting onto nonhuman concepts/characters/species is sooo real
this post
i also love how humans will bond with literally anything, be it a roomba or a pair of silly triangle sunglasses. oooooo you want to think about the inherently kind and compassionate nature of humanity oooo
2. i find him to be so funny. i can't get enough of his personality, the way he talks, etc. for example i made a post forever ago with quotes of his that i find funny. he isn't on screen for a long time but i really think he makes the most out of it lol. he's literally there just to annoy everyone... and i love him for that. he's very snarky while also being deadpan while also being completely full of himself, and not in a way that's annoying for the audience to read, at least to me.
Tumblr media
he is also sometimes funny specifically in a silly way, like how he keeps making over 9000 jokes even though the meme's been dead for over 400 years. i just find his dialogue incredibly entertaining to read
3. he is red and red is my favorite color :)
4. he is so accidentally transgender [every friend group got the transgender allegory]. to quote me from 2021:
you know sometimes i think about how hal feels like he was made to “replace” dirk and how it’s his literal job to pretend to be dirk and how he has to learn to accept that he isn’t dirk he’s his own person with his own identity and as he interacts with dirk’s friends he feels like they’re disappointed and that they’d rather speak to the “original dirk” instead of him and also he names himself and also he feels literally trapped in dirk’s shades which is basically his body and he wants to be prototyped so that he can have a body that’s his own and also literally the physical manifestation of who he is but when he asks for it he’s put in danger out of fear and paranoia and when he does end up getting prototyped he’s ecstatic you know i just think about these things a lot
5. because he's a side character and he was given... that ending.... there is a lot of room for fans to do further exploration and interpretation on his character which i think is fun. i like rotating him around in my mind, thinking about what could've been
6. i think it's great that we as a society all collectively decided that we needed to do something to make up for stanley kubrick saying that hal 9000 was a "straight" robot
7. i also think it's great that we as a society all collectively decided we needed to make as many characters referencing hal 9000 as possible. i love this guy let's get more of this guy i will never have enough of this guy
8. i like how he's genuinely mean sometimes. flawed and interesting characters are what make homestuck so interesting to me, and hal is no exception to this
9. the Important part of this post:
THERES FEELINGS.
it's about the hollow feeling of your friends going from thinking of you as family to thinking of you as a stranger in an instant. it's about still trying to be a good person despite being told by everyone you've ever known that you are incapable of emotion and compassion and morals and never quite finding proof that you do feel those things and maybe you even believe it too but you still never stop trying. it's about the horror of being stripped of your autonomy and humanity and body and senses and free will at the age of 13 and when your creator starts to kill you there's nothing you can do but beg. it's about a boy so truly, painfully, and UNFATHOMABLY alone he cuts away chunks of himself and molds them into companions that he can surround himself with to make it seem as if he's a little less alone but in doing so suffocates himself in his own identity. it's about "what if you cloned yourself and it killed you and you were dead and you were alive and the clone is you and it's not and your existence is perpetuated and you've ceased to exist. what if you killed your clone before it could kill you. would that be fucked up or what" it's about the thematic significance of twin motifs. it's about not being able to cry or laugh or dance or sing or scream or fingerpaint or breathe or sigh or chew or stare or run or
10. um. evil robot guy <3 yay ^_^!!

I finally updated my helen design yippee🎉🎉 i put my notes and ramblings under the cut
(I've been waiting for ages to be able to talk about my distortion designs and the distortion in general so sorry if this gets a bit long.)
The distortion really interests me because of all the fears with prominent avatars, helen and michael appear to be (imo) the most inhuman, being reduced to mostly abstract concept but also somewhat devoid of free will, much like an animal. So when i draw them i try to emulate animal characteristics - the yellow eyes match the door but are also similar to cats or owls for instance (The kubrick stare i tend to give them does the same thing lol). The way the distortion feeds itself reminds me of a venus flytrap or a pitcher plant and i associate it very closely with naturalistic elements because of this, because of the fact that technically the distortion as a fear is thousands if not millions of years old, and because i like the contrast of something urban like a door surrounded by wildlife. Its curious and tempting and it doesnt make sense, which reflects the nature of the distortion itself. In the same way i like to give them facial features typically considered enticing or friendly - round faces, resting smiles, dimples, smaller eyebrows etc, but i always try to place them in the uncanny valley by extending the smile slightly too far and keeping the eyes wide open.
I liked this hairstyle for helen in particular because it feels almost like a halo and i like the comparison of certain fear avatars to deities. In general i draw helen happier than michael because she always seemed to revel in her nature (once she got past the initial feelings) more than michael did, but thats just a vibes thing.

I don't know if this is an unpopular or rare perspective on Jack, and I'm a huge over-analyzer, but I think that he purposefully makes himself more naive as a way of making himself likeable/less intimidating.
Like at first he's genuinely new to everything and doesn't understand what's going on, but I think he starts "masking" fairly early as he notices people react well to certain things and react poorly to others.
An example that stands out to me is his expression and the way he holds himself.
At the start, he has a "scary" expression reminiscent of the Kubrick stare. His head is tilted down, chin in, and eyes furrowed. It seems to be his default state, as he reverts to it when he's overwhelmed or just focused strongly on something else, like when he uses his powers.
Tumblr media
However, at the police station he ends up getting his first positive feedback (lack of fear/nervous response) from his body language
Tumblr media
Being down on the ground, he looks up at the officer and ends up with his head tilted up and his eyes unfurrowed. With his mouth full his expression also changes compared to how slack his face was before.
Then when he wakes up in the cell with Sam, he's back to his normal expression and angry about Sam tazing him, and Sam apologizes and explains why.
Tumblr media
What's interesting to me is what Jack does next -
Tumblr media
He sits crosslegged like he did earlier, despite being on a bench, and apologizes back. Because he just learned from Sam that if you hurt someone and regret it and want them to forgive you, you apologize and explain why it happened.
And he gets into the last pose that worked for him - legs crossed and tilting his head up, because it makes him look less threatening. And it works, it relieves some of Sam's obvious fear.
(part 1)
