The akumatized phone continues to emit magical tendrils as it falls through the sky.

Maternal Instinct (akumatized!Nathalie) and Ladybug share a look before they race towards where the phone was last spotted.

The phone faces a reflective surface and it zaps itself away.

Ladybug: Where did it...?

Ladybug kicks against Maternal Instinct's sentimonster (Mothership) and ties the akuma up with her yo-yo with an excessive amount of string.

Maternal Instinct: Mothership—

Ladybug (interrupting): Oh no you don't!

Ladybug ties Maternal Instinct to the gates of the Agreste mansion.

Ladybug: You aren't going anywhere!

Close up of Maternal Instinct as her hands are tied and her mouth is gagged.

Ladybug: You can't follow him!

Ladybug looks off to the side with a close-up of the third spot on her earrings disappearing with a "beep!"

Ladybug (internally): At least... Not until my yo-yo disappears...

Ladybug taps at the earpiece that's still in her ear.

Ladybug: Catwalker?

Catwalker: You're...

Catwalker tries to move away but he's stuck in the stasis pod and the magical tendrils prevent him from letting her go.

Catwalker: I can't...

Catwalker contorts his hand as his ring charges with power.

Catwalker: Cataclysm!

Emilie's stasis pod crumbles to black dust around an unharmed Emilie and Catwalker.

Catwalker looks away as he starts to scramble away, Emilie being dragged behind him.

Catwalker (internally): Why?

Ladybug (over comm): Catwalker, are you there?

Catwalker touches his earpiece, his eyes full of relief.

Catwalker: Ladybug?

Ladybug looks forlornly to the sky, holding the ends of her yo-yo's string that is the only thing keeping Maternal Instinct in check.

Ladybug: I've tied up the villain for now, but the akumatized object teleported away and I have no idea where it is... and I still have no idea what's really happened to Adrien, and Chat's still gone, and I lost you too, and your mom now knows who you are, and everything's a disaster--

Catwalker lays on his side next to Emilie, reaching away from her.

Catwalker: You haven't lost me...  My.... my mom hasn't noticed me.  I can't really explain why not.  But my identity is still safe.  It's not a total disaster, Ladybug.  Everything's going to be fine, I promise.  You can still save the day.  You always have.

Ladybug: But how?  The phone could be anywhere by now and I don't have enough time to find it—as soon as I change back, the villain will escape again.  And if I ask the other heroes for help, they'll probably end up zapped to their mothers too.

Catwalker: I may not be beside you right now, but I'm still here for you.  And not just me—compromised or not, you still have a multitude of people who can help you.  You don't have to solve it all by yourself, Ladybug.

Ladybug looks at her lucky charm (a bobbin) in realization.

Ladybug: Or maybe I can... Okay, I've got a plan.  But I'm going to have to go radio silent to pull this off.  You'll be okay without me?

Catwalker forces a smile, touching the back of his neck.

Catwalker: Nothing to worry about!  It'll just be me and my mother here, no one else around, doing absolutely nothing. Good luck!

Ladybug wears the Mouse miraculous.

Ladybug: Mullo, Tikki, Unify!

Multibug is wrapped in her jump rope to activate her power.

Multibug: Multitude!

An army of Multimouses charge in every direction.  Multibug (the copy that still has the Ladybug miraculous and therefore the only one with spots) holds the bobbin above her head while a couple Multimouses keep the yo-yo strings secure.

The Multimouse falls into the phone's magical tendrils.

Multimouse: Aack!

Cut to Sabine Cheng, startled to have a Multimouse suddenly appear, attached to her arm.

Multimouse: Sorry! Don't worry about little ol' me! Just helping Ladybug!

Multibug converges on the phone, using the bobbin's thread to Lasso!, Yoink!, and Flip! the phone. Two Multimouses throw the yo-yo at the phone with a Crack!, causing the akuma and amok to emerge from it.

Multibug: Time to de-evilize!

The yo-yo cleanses the akuma and amok.

Multibug throws the bobbin in the air.

Multibug: Miraculous Multibug!

Emilie and Catwalker lay on their backs together, with Emilie still on the destroyed stasis pod and Catwalker laying in the grass.

Catwalker: That was Ladybug. She's amazing, Mother.  You would have loved her.

Catwalker: I'm sorry I ran away.  I couldn't think of what else I could do.  My friends are going to believe it's all Father's fault when he didn't do anything. It's just... it's been hard to be his son after you...  But that doesn't mean I don't love him anymore.  He just... misses you.

Catwalker curls up in fetal position facing towards Emilie.

Catwalker: I guess he's the one who left you here... wherever 'here' is.  A garden, I guess?  You would have loved being in a place like this.  I just wish I'd known how to find you.

Catwalker looks down at Emilie's face, his free hand starting to reach towards her.

Catwalker: And now that I've run away, it'll be impossible to ask Father why he hid you here.  So I guess this is the only time I'll be able to tell you that I—

A swarm of magical ladybugs sweep in, restoring Emilie's stasis pod to perfect condition and depositing Catwalker alone outside.

Catwalker: —love you, Mother.

Catwalker: Sure.

we joke about chat blanc being the scariest one and all but i actually think Cat Walker is easily the most disturbing persona of Adrien. To me personally

like sure Chat Blanc represents a lot of his anger and rage and abandonment. and Claw Noir does that too only in color and lipstick. but Cat Walker being the literal representation of Adriens ability to just, repress himself on command. to just shut off a huge part of his identity (Chat Noir) for what he fully believed to be forever. and easily start acting like a completely different person (Cat Walker) is so. incredibly disturbing to me.

like yeah the episode frames it lightheartedly but the IMPLICATIONS ARE THERE.

cat walker stares at the fact Adrien is so willing to abandon himself, to replace himself in people's lives, to stand by ladybug as a completely different person because thats what he believes she wants from him, to easily live behind layers and layers of masks, and he simply goes "i choose to not perceive that" and i think thats fucking wild man.

so yes, he does entirely belong in the box, but he sure as hell aint gonna admit it, because his whole thing is being the representation of Adrien's repression and covering up his problems. He's not gonna admit he has a problem. So if you try to stage a coup, YOU'RE going in the box, bucko.

Do we think that the Ladrien dynamic in season 6 is going to be similar to that of Ladywalker?

Think of it like this:

Ladybug is still very much in love with Adrien, yet has to be covert about her feelings for him to protect her identity.

Adrien, on the other hand, is now in a very happy, committed relationship and therefore doesn't feel the need to flirt with, or become moony-eyed over Ladybug.

Ladybug can't seem to stop blushing and getting distracted by her boyfriend, whom she is currently saving and therefore can't have feelings for him right now. Adrien, on the other hand, who is very confused by her strange behavior, is behaving in the politely stoic way he uses interact with people that he isn't so close to.

However, this is merely an act, Adrien is close to Ladybug and knows her incredibly well and closely. In interactions, he is constantly having to keep himself in check and make sure he doesn't reveal that he knows too much, that he's aware of too much. He cares about her, but he has to make it seem like its a detached care. He has to treat her like a hero of Paris and not like one of his closest friends and partner.

The tension of identities and secrets gets so thick, that it begins an unraveling in their interactions that can only be resolved either with an identity reveal, or, the same way that Ladywalker ended, with them parting ways indefinitely.

Something else I picked up watching the recent episodes of miraculous (Jubilation) is how messy Adrien's room is.

He kept it so pristine previously, but now he's breaking out and his mind is so jumbled with his family all being ill, his room is a reflection of his personality and mindset.

He is no longer the prim and proper Adrien Agreste, he is an angsty teen going through a lot and it shows.

Such as when Marinette is on a spiral her room soon gets cluttered, yet somehow, because she's Marinette it is relatively organised.

Also this scene specifically is concerning the Alliance ring that Plagg is trying to manage, which Adrien was affected by tremendously. I mean... his dad went behind his back and still reduced him to being sub-human because his dad still wants to use him as a model so scanned him, disregarding giving Adrien any decency.

I mean affectively, you could argue that now Gabriel has scanned Adrien in, he is frozen in time just like Emilie. No wonder Adrien is like this. I mean even in Kuro Neko, Adrien's room was still clean, but he was more emotionally detached than anything. I like how his go to is still playing video games though.

i just watched kuro neko and now i can say, from the bottom of my heart, that this episode, just like season 4 in general, is a complete and utter hate letter directed to chat noir.

first off, i hate how the word “perfect” is always used to describe adrien’s masked personality, and this happens awfully often. in my opnion, adrien’s public personality is a polished version of himself, resulted from trauma, being emotionally abused by his shit of a father and being extremely sheltered his whole life. he doesn’t feel like he can express himself and his thoughts most of the time, and when he does (i.e. in mega leech, ep10 se04, or in lies, ep02se04, but honestly there are lots of moments like this) he is reprehended by his father, by others or something bad happens in somehow result to that.

i hate how plagg was like “so, you know how you act anxiously and courtious around your abusive father and the press? yeah, i want you to act like that around your crush, she will love that trauma-induced part of you for certain”, specially because i don’t think plagg would actually say something like that to adrien (but feel free to disagree with me on that /gen). i hate it even more given that, at the end of the episode, plagg says something beautiful that i 100% agree with (and that goes pretty much against everything he said or did through the whole episode): “you’re not chat noir, but you’re not adrien either. you’re both.”

and i feel like a lot of people don’t understand that, somehow. actually, i feel like the writers/producers of the show itself don’t understand that. i could go on and on about my critiques towards this episode, about the terrible writing choices and production issues miraculous has, about how horribly they handle chat noir and adrien as a character and my thoughts on season 4, but i’ll stop here and just resume it into a single phrase: chat noir deserves better.

Marinette meets a past Ladybug holder. Things don't go as planned.

Marinette's dreams have been odd lately.

She's in an odd fuzzy near sleep state before she drops.

Drops right from a fuzzy liminal space a dark void. Except voids shouldn't have floors. Voids shouldn't echo and their shouldn't be anyone else in them. Theirs a red spot somewhere on the horizon. She can't make out any features the closer she gets until one night the spot morphs into a person.

A ladybug; or more specifically, a Ladybug holder.

"H-hello?" She says, but the user doesn't turn. "U-um, L-Ladybug?"

The holder scoffs. "Try again, soldier."

"Um, I'm sorry I don't know-"

"Don't you ever say that again. To me, or yourself, and especially in the heat of battle, don't you ever let them question your control." The holder turns and Marinette's eyes widen.

Before her is a petite woman, no taller than her mom, with curly hair cut into a bob with one part of her bangs clipped back from her face. She bares a small cape in the shape of ladybug wings and thick pads of armor on her elbows and knees. Her eyes are brown and firm with determination and confidence, she can't be much older than Alya's sister, but with the way she carries herself you'd think she'd been arounds for decades.

"On and off the field I'm to go by the Red General. Nothing more nothing less. Are we clear?"

"O-oh, yes ma'am!"

The Red General nod and turned back around, fiddling with something she couldn't make out before screens shot up from below; footage of past battle surrounding them with the audio cut off.

"I'm here to talk about your performance on the field." The Red General says. "Past holders are too cowardly and forgiving to say anything, but I refuse to stand back and watch this mockery any longer."

"W-what are you-?"

"I'll only be saying this once, so be sure to take what I say to heart, understood?"

"..."

"I said, do you understand, soldier?" She repeat, eyes hardened.

"Y-yes, ma'am!"

"Good." The Red General pulls up footage she'd filed away. "Kuro Neko. A mess, an absolute failure of a mission with no redeeming qualities. Your partner made a fool of you and of your mission. He abandoned his post, gave the enemy a weapon of mass destruction, left said weapon on a civilian rooftop for anyone to carry, and had the audacity to play victim. And what did you do, soldier?" She asked. "Through all of that unnecessary drama how did you respond?"

"I-I apologized because-"

"Because what, soldier? Because you felt bad for him? Because you felt guilty for ignoring him in the line of duty? You reward him for throwing a temper tantrum and allow his unprofessional and disrespectful behavior to continue?"

"That's not far, Plagg-"

"Plagg is a immortal entity that has no concept of running an army let alone a team of heroes against a terrorist. He had to right giving you orders like that and you had no reason to yield to his demand. Do not become some Gods plaything."

She took a step forward and on instinct Marinette stepped back, somehow feeling pressed against a wall by her gaze.

"You have been entrusted with beings of vast unimaginable power. You make the calls. Do no sit back and allow them to disrespect you like this. In my army it was ship up or ship out. You earned your miraculous and at a moments notice that privilege can and will be taken away the second you prove yourself unworthy. I've sat by and watched countless Ladybug holders navigate the trials that come with yielding such power, but I refuse to sit by and watch you bend and fold to such injustice."

The Red General stepped once more, but Marinette couldn't find it in her to step back, locked in place by the commanding air surrounding the holder.

"My time has passed. I have no intentions of returning to the field. My troops, my comrades, my friends are waiting for me beyond this world, but mark my words, if you continue on this path towards self destruction, you won't have to worry about the pressure of the ladybug miraculous much longer. Are we clear?"

Marinette nod.

"Good. Then at ease, soldier. It's time to wake up."

Watched Transmission and mmm, don't like how it relates to Kuro Neko.

Like, it's nice that they gave their holders the choice to keep their Miraculous but we've already seen how Adrien would react. Even after Plagg came back Adrien was still in his depressive episode and had to be coaxed out of it.

And Plagg KNOWS this. He's the only one who knows just how much losing Chat Noir affected Adrien the first time.

In Transmission Adrien is literally seconds away from being akumatized, which... honestly I would have preferred to him suddenly snapping out of it now that he can pursue a relationship with Marinette.

It makes more sense for Marinette's character than Adrien's since her desire for normalcy is extra strong this season but only if you ignore how much she cares about Chat Noir. They both care about their partner too much to just up and leave. Adrien himself said one of his fears was never seeing her again!

I mean, it could work if they lean into it being an impulse decision. The fandom forgets that Marinette is just as impulsive as Chat Noir just in different ways.

Part 7. Those Who Love You (Maternal Instinct, part B)

Maternal Instinct (akumatized!Nathalie Sancouer) is outside Nino's with the Shadowmoth's communication light framing her face.  In the background, Nino is watching her through a window, magically stuck to his mom (who is conveniently blocked from view since I have no idea what she’s supposed to look like).

Maternal Instinct: No sign of Adrien at Mr. Lahiffe's.

Shadowmoth (over akuma connection): Keep looking.  I can't have Adrien vanishing on me.

Maternal Instinct: You saw Chat Noir was replaced, correct?

Cut to Shadowmoth communicating from his lair.

Shadowmoth: Yes, I've seen "Catwalker."

Maternal Instinct (over akuma connection): You recognize him?

Shadowmoth: He fought a late-night sentimonster a couple weeks ago.  I thought he was temporary.

Cut back to Maternal Instinct, holding the akumatized phone in contemplation.

Shadowmoth: And I'm not sure why Ladybug delayed attacking you just to introduce him to us again.

Maternal Instinct: Regardless, it seems that Chat Noir will no longer be of any concern to you...

Maternal Instinct's attention catches on a boy with a familiar white shirt and jeans disappearing behind a building.

Maternal Instinct: Wait... Adrien?  Is that you?

Maternal Instinct points her phone at a the boy, but the magical tendrils fizzle out on contact.

Maternal Instinct: Come to your non-biological maternal guardian!

The boy--Wayhem--turns towards Maternal Instinct with a sheepish grin.  Maternal Instinct facepalms as she sends out the magical tendrils again, this time teleporting him away.

Maternal Instinct: Oh, you’re that stalker of Adrien’s... Go home to your mother!

Maternal Instinct looks at Wayhem's image on the phone, as it's been added to the phone's memory.

Maternal Instinct: I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check his home too...

Maternal Instinct teleports away just as Ladybug and Catwalker leap in to catch up with her.

Ladybug looks annoyed as she retracts her yo-yo.

Ladybug: We need a new plan. We can't keep chasing this akuma if she's just going to keep teleporting away.

Catwalker puts an earpiece in his ear.

Catwalker: That Nino kid might know something about who the akuma is and who she's looking for.  If you talk to him, I'll do a lap around Paris and contact you over our earpieces if I spot the akuma.

Ladybug hangs from her yo-yo as she talks to Nino outside his window.

Ladybug: Hey Nino, have any idea why the akuma went after you?

Nino: She's Nathalie Sancouer and she… I think she’s hunting down Adrien Agreste.

Ladybug's eyes go wide in shock, and she grabs at her yo-yo as it frazzles.

Ladybug: Adrien?? What happened to him?

Nino looks away tearfully.

Nino: I… I don't know. But I'm worried he won't come home.

Ladybug forces a smile to her face as she grips the windowsill to keep from falling.

Ladybug: It’ll be fine! I’ll go make sure he comes home safe and sound!

Ladybug swings away, still stiffly fake, and Nino watches her leave.

Ladybug: Can’t let another amazing blond boy disappear on me, can I?

Cut to Ladybug crouched in an alley, hands covering her face.

Catwalker (over comm): Ladybug, are you…

Ladybug touches her earpiece.  Tears are clearly flowing freely now but she still tries to smile, even if it completely fails.

Ladybug: I’m fine! Just need to find Adrien and make sure he’s safe!

Cut to Catwalker looking off to the side as he touches his own earpiece.

Catwalker: I’m sure he’s alright.  No sign of the akuma yet, so what's our next move?

Cut back to Ladybug (still crying) closes her eyes and tries to think, placing her hands together up against her nose with her thumbs below her jaw.

Ladybug: She's going after anyone friendly with Adrien, no matter how close they are.

A large group shot including: Marinette, Alya, Nino, Adrien, Kagami, Luka, Juleka, Rose, Alix, Kim, Markov, Max, Ivan, Mylene, Nathaniel, Marc, Sabrina, Zoe, and Chloe.  Catwalker looks off to the side as a tear streams down his face.

Ladybug (over comm): The problem is that Adrien has too many friends now.  Not that it isn't wonderful that he's been able to make so many friends! It's just going to take forever to narrow them all down...

Catwalker: He sounds very... loved.

Ladybug (over comm): He is.

Catwalker: Let's focus on the akuma for now. Maybe your power can give us a lead?

Cut to Ladybug summoning her lucky charm.  It's a red and black bobbin with red thread.

Ladybug: Lucky Charm! A bobbin?

Catwalker's expression instantly alights as he realizes who the lucky charm is referring to.

Catwalker: It’s Mar—I mean, does Adrien have any friends who are into sewing?

Ladybug: Marinette Dupain-Cheng.

Ladybug holds the bobbin in one hand and grabs at her head with the other.

Ladybug: But I have no idea how I’d involve her with beating this akuma!

Catwalker is already on his way to Marinette's, just propelling himself with his stick across the street towards her rooftop.

Catwalker: Let's just meet at her place and go from there.

Ladybug: Okay.  See you at 12 Rue Gotlib.

Catwalker knocks on Marinette's trapdoor.

Catwalker: Marinette Dupain-Cheng?  Are you home?

Maternal Instinct sends out her magical tendrils and Catwalker leaps out of the way.

Maternal Instinct: You'll go home... to your mother!

Catwalker brandishes his staff as Maternal Instinct rushes towards him.

Catwalker: Sending me home to mother seems quite presumptuous of you.  What if she died?  What if I left my home behind?

Maternal Instinct comes in closer, her phone starting to send out more magical tendrils.

Catwalker: You can't just assume that sending a kid home is the best thing for them!

Maternal Instinct: Then let's test it, shall we?  If your mother loves you, then go to her now!

Catwalker uses his staff to yeet the phone into the sky, but light is already emitting down from it.

Cut to Ladybug surging forward, throwing her yo-yo towards the phone.

Ladybug: No!

Cut to Catwalker gritting his teeth as the light hits him and he is teleported away.

You know what I think they’re doing in those whatif episodes? Especially the placing of the episodes. Showing what would happen if Adrien faced Hawkmoth when he isn’t ready.

Season 3

During these episodes, Ladybug gets another piece of the complicated puzzle that Chat Noir is made of. In Chat Blanc, she knew something about Chat Noir was capable of being broken enough to be akumatized.

What we also learned was Adrien isn’t ready to break the chains his father has placed on him.

Season 3 for Adrien was about getting truly comfortable with being Chat Noir with realizing that what he can be for Ladybug is to just be himself as Chat Noir. That he doesnt need to be perfect Adrien via Aspik, Adrien is the best for Ladybug when he is Chat Noir, which also as we know is just another side of Adrien. He doesnt need to shut out his Chat Noir side to be by Ladybug’s side by just being Aspik. This is much more reinforced in Kuro Neko which I get to later.

Season 4

At this time in the series Adrien is only beginning to be challenged in his role as part of the Miraculous team in season 4. I say challenged because up until now he could very safely say he is vital to the team since Ladybug was 1) not the Guardian until then 2) there are only a few heroes and Ladybug calls on them ONLY after he and Ladybug attempt to handle things by themselves. This changes in season 4 where she calls on them pretty much whenever she wants and not after first trying with Chat Noir.

Totally unrelated but I really liked that despite Chat Noir giving up his miraculous Ladybug NEVER even considers continuing without a Chat Noir, which to me just states that she understands the importance of the Cat miraculous. Which she also needed to understand to find another one(cough failed since she ended up going back to the original heheh and I love her for it).

In the end of the season 4 though, Chat Noir is left beginning to understand the value that he by himself has, we can see this in the last scene where he tells Ladybug that she hasn’t lost him yet. He is capable of doing this because he KNOWS he is important to Ladybug and that he is enough to bring her back on her feet. Maybe he doesn’t understand fully but I am sure he will in time. Also notice in Ephemeral he faced hawkmoth ALONE, which maybe Im reading too much into it also shows he isn’t ready to resist akumatization by himself BUT we also see him beginning to when Marinette calls to him for help while he is akumatized.

We get Kuro Neko directly after Ephemeral which is important because uptil Ephemeral we see Chat Noir continue to feel left out and undervalued. But in Kuro Neko this is beginning to be addressed which again undoes the feelings that likely helped Adrien get akumatized.

So how does this end?

I bet when Adrien finds out about hawkmoth, there will be a scene where Ladybug parallels that scene telling him that he hasn’t lost her. Where she reaches out and shows him that she is there for HIM.

And how do we get to that scene?

In Chat Blanc we saw Chat Noir use - fight as his reaction

In Ephemeral he used - freeze

I am willing to bet he will use flight, find Ladybug and thats when Ladybug supports him enough to face reality, together with her.

I think whats going to happen when Chat Noir finds out about his dad its going to involve him needing to successfully resist akumatization. I think this is very likely too since we have already seen many characters successfully resist it and I’m sure we will see the same from Adrien in time.

But through each season Adrien gets a little bit more ready to break away from his fathers control and his bond with Ladybug gets stronger.

I think I just understood why Ladybug was so terrified in Kuro Neko; she thought it might be another Cat Blanc situation. Tbh I would've been blinded by terror/trauma too.

my love for this design below the cut!

cat walker,, cat walker design is so elevated; i love how sleek it is, how the design incorporates an extra shade of gray that give the look so much more dimension. The gold detailing is so elegant, the form of the suit is so sharp, and the way its coloured gives it so much like,, phantom detail? Like the way it’s darker on the shoulder makes the suit look like it has a cape, the way it’s darker on the bottom with that gray in the middle makes it look like boots, the lines that go down his chest makes it look like a double breasted jacket, and the way it trails all the way down his thighs is so reminiscent of straight leg dress pants. This is a flat suit !!! 

The chat noir suit make him look like a mischievous prankster spirit, this suit makes Adrien look like a sophisticated phantom thief. It leans so much into a brand of fantasy that I love; the only way i could love it more was if the suit had golden epaulettes
