How the special investigators cope with stress:

Ui: smoking (duh), horse riding while screaming his lungs out. People once reported his screams because they thought it was a ghoul's scream

Kuroiwa: working out then having some really good, warm meal. He always feels less stressed after eating good food

Shinohara: drinking and chatting. He uses to drink a lot as a junior investigator which resulted in many lectures from Iba

Kiyoko: making pottery. Her juniors receive a bunch of potteries whenever there is a hard case

Houji: quinque training, sex, buying clothes and beauty products. Yeah he uses retail therapy, good thing that he is rich and single

Mougan: meditating, going to clubs. He needs silence or really loud noises there's no in between

Arima: sleeping. He spends most of his day off sleeping if no one asks him out

Marude: bike riding, having a good cry. He is the type to limit the crying time to 30 minutes per day or something and has a alarm for it

Suzuya: eating sweets, throwing Hanbee. Hanbee must keep filling his sweet stock or he will be sad and stressed

Note

Your theory about the last chapter of re being Kaneki's dream is pretty interesting. Have you found any other oddities since you made that post? I'm looking back at that final chapter myself. I might have a look at the chapters that came before, as well, see if there's any weird foreshadowing that Ishida might've put in beforehand, too.

There is one thing I've recently noticed in the final chapter regarding Kuroiwa.

Tokyo Ghoul :re, chapter 179

In the image above, he is shown holding up a newspaper with his hands. I've drawn a red pointing to Kuroiwa's right hand, and one of his fingers is visible. However, Kuroiwa lost both of his arms and hands throughout the course of the series. At the end of the original series, Eto cut of Kuroiwa's left arm in retaliation for him cutting of her arm years prior, and he is forced to where a prosthetic.

There is a hook attached to the prosthetic that allows him to grab certain things, but it doesn't have a hand or fingers. Later, when he and Urie confront Furuta in the latter's office, his right arm is torn off as well by Roma.

Tokyo Ghoul :re, chapter 137

So, at the end of :re Kuroiwa wouldn't have any hands to pick up a newspaper, but the final chapter still shows him with fingers.

I think this is an additional hint that the final chapter is merely happening in Kaneki's mind. In chapter 137, Kuroiwa is stabbed through the neck in a way that would be a death sentence, and he is shown to stop breathing. Those present (Urie, Marude, Hide) don't try to get him medical attention (which they would if there was a chance he could make it).

Kaneki likely heard of Kuroiwa's death, but in his dream he completely omits it. However, since he wasn't present for his fight against Roma he wouldn't know that his right arm was torn off. So, in his dream (:re 179) he still shows Kuroiwa with his right hand/fingers.

EtoKen Mini-Fic 2

Written for the ship showdown earlier this month, and wanted it to have its own post.

As Haise, Kaneki had heard many a tale about the One-Eyed Owl, the only SSS-rate in Tokyo. Large, powerful, nearly invincible. Six arms, like tree trunks, meant to crush anything foolish enough to get within range, and an ukaku kagune able to pierce any armor. The only one who had been able to land notable blows on it were Kishou Arima and Iwao Kuroiwa, and still both were only able to take a single arm.

However, when his kagune cut the nape of the kakuja's neck like a knife through butter, he couldn't help but feel that the tales were exaggerated, arrogant hyperbole caused by investigators too cowardly to throw their lives on the line.

Kaneki was not so intimidated.

He didn't realize the smirk etched on his mouth when he saw the main body with its head still attached to its shoulders. A sigh escaped his lips.

"I missed."

The creature had the audacity to mirror his expression, to create a dark reflection of the monster parading about in his body. It made his heart race, almost like a heart attack, at just how excited it looked, like someone had finally discovered the most obvious weakness in its defenses. Like it finally had an equal.

And Eto was excited. A newfound giddiness had wormed its way into her rotting heart when she felt the cool air of night sweep across her skin and into her lungs. Not even Arima had figured out the the nape trick; he had been all brute force, slicing her loose as if she were an infected limb. Kaneki, on the other hand, had to be resourceful while on Haise's favorite suppressants, and needed to methodically cut her out like a cancer.

She had been watching him carefully these past few years, tracking his progress under the king's tutelage with anticipation. At first, he was like a seed, but now he had sprouted like an angel just before it tipped from the grace of heaven. It made her heart race like never before, and she hardly knew what to do with herself. Such a feeling, festering like a wound since that fateful book signing, wasn't supposed to be possible for her, but here it was, new and red.

And she liked it.

However, she had to be careful not to kill him too quickly, lest he be cut from the ground before he could truly flower. Still, it couldn't hurt to indulge.

"Punk..."

The special investigators when they were in CCG academy

Kuroiwa: the silent guy. Seems hard to understand at first but actually very reliable. People respect him for not even flinch at injuries and always carry people to the infirmary

Shinohara: the funny guy who always makes dirty jokes. Once sneaked adult magazine and alcohol in the class, it did not end well. The teachers think he's a troublemaker but the students love him. When he was not running around making troubles he would explain the lessons to anyone who came to him because he is patient and good at explanation and

Mougan: Sometimes refuse to go inside some places because "there's a malevolent spirit here". People begged him to do psychic stuffs like contacting someone who died and called him a liar when he refused. A true party goer, if there was a party you would see Mougan there. The lecturers asked him many times to not scream while firing weapons

Aura: the popular girl. She hold the record of "getting the most confession in one day" and "getting the most confession from both genders". She was so pretty some people suggested her to be in S2 squad or become a lecturer so there's less chance to be injured. She never speaks to them again. She has a friendly rivalry with Mado Kasuka and people loved seeing them compete against each other. When not competing they would rant about how CCG treats women, with Kiyoko swore that she would never get married and Kasuka said she would only marry someone in this line of work and fully respects her will.

Ui: "what's this rich pretty boy doing here?" "He will get killed the first day on battlefield" "I heard his family donated a large sum of money for CCG" Ui's academic life is full of rumors and doubt, which made him really upset at first. Until he learned that he could do better than most of those people lol. Got mistaked for a girl easily, refused to change his iconic bowl cut

Houji: the secret troublemaker. Unlike Shinohara who did everything publicly to gain attention from his fellow classmates, Houji took pride in messing things up without anyone notice because no one thought it was his handy work. He stayed in the dormitory of the academy and never returned home during holidays. People like him, he didn't have any friend.

Marude: he was in a biker gang and he was super proud of it. Confused about why he prefers looking at boys to girls. Talked a lot during lessons but he can answer every question perfectly. He was very good at shooting but not as much for heavy weapons due to his physical, which made him kinda jealous/mad at the buff, strong guys

Arima: Marude tried to make him go to the academy for one day. He was late and missed the first two periods and didn't know what to do so he just stand outside the class until people led him in. People surrounded him during lunchtime to ask if the rumors about him were true and caused a scene in the cafeteria. He was too good for the practical lessons but too far behind for the theory lessons (like "why should we calculate the RC regeneration rate? We just need to kill them fast"). He dropped out after 2 days.
