When I was a little girl, I thought about how a prince would show up outside my bedroom window. He'd take me away to his castle and marry me, treating me with kindness.
Then we'd live happily ever after, just like in the movies.
However, the hardships that came with being a princess made me think that I could handle them. As it turns out, that's not how life is at all.
Not at all.
Plenty of hardships are thrown at you left and right. and it's all about how well you deal with it.
As I got older, my fantasies became more realistic. I wanted to live a small, easy life with the person I so dearly loved.
A small child or kitten running around, giving us entertainment.
Living out our lives to the fullest and being content with simplicity. We didn't need anything more or anything less.
That's how I've always imagined it.
As it turns out, life does throw things at you, but this one was one of the best hardships I'll ever came to love.
And it all begins at the young age of sixteen. A fresh high school student, worried about what people thought about them.
Their hair, clothes, grades, and sometimes even a boyfriend or girlfriend.
However, most of those thoughts got quickly brushed away. On a person's sixteenth birthday, initials will appear on their dominant wrist.
The absolute heart racing feeling full of wonder of who your special significance other could be.
Maybe it was someone who lives halfway across the world. Maybe someone who goes to the same school as you. Maybe someone you grew up with.
Or maybe someone you just happen to know from the internet.
Whatever it may be, they will be bound to meet. Some people say it's fate. Some say even destiny.
However, I just thought it was a clear misconception for me.
I had my dreams significantly crushed by four initials on my wrist. Oh, how I used to despise them—the hate that fueled through me when I looked at my wrist.
Looking back, it was harsh and childish. Life is unexpected; things happen. However, this one was one that's stuck in my favorites, even if it was the opposite of everything I always wanted.
I wouldn't trade it for the world.
The bedroom window was open a bit as the rain fell from the sky. Small devices lit up here and there around the room.
It was an easy night for all of us. Even Kōtarō was quiet, which sparked an interest in me. I was keeping myself busy by reading a book I had been wanting to catch up on.
While also laying on Keiji, who had been next to me reading some other kind of book.
Our beloved Kenma was in the next room over, streaming. The door was slightly ajar, leaving space for the blue rays of light to show on the wall.
I could hear small splashes of water coming from the bathroom. A small, unnoticeable smile gracing my strawberry-colored lips.
No matter how many times I knew water calmed that beautiful boy down, I couldn't get over it.
I had run the bath myself, even adding a few bathroom toys and bubbles, despite it being the late hours of the night. And despite that he was a grown man, we don't in this house.
If I had listened hard enough, I could hear Tetsu downstairs. The soft noise of most likely midnight snacks being made.
It seemed as if we were all content in the house we called home. A shiver ran down my back as I felt the soft breeze come from the window.
The skies were pitch black; if it were a normal night, I'd be on the roof with Tetsu and Keiji. We'd point out the constellations and watch the stars.
It was one of my favorite things to do with them.
If it were later in the afternoon and the sun was slightly straying from the clouds and the rain was soft, Kōtarō would be dancing in the rain with me.
We'd sing our hearts out, then get scolded by our lovely boyfriend, Keiji, who quite possibly seemed like the only sane one in the house.
Besides Kenma half of the time.
The days that it was sunny, and I wished silently that it would rain. Kenma would softly take my hand and lead me to the kitchen.
Even though we both shared the hatred of sunny days, we'd bake something.
Whether it be healthy or not, burnt or just right, muffins or cupcakes. So, our house constantly smells like a bakery. When we wouldn't feel up to baking, a movie was our next best thing.
On hard days when I felt like I really needed something to just get my mind off for a little while, Kuroo was my go-to person.
We'd run to the park and back, putting the stress into exercising. Sometimes, just sitting down with him on a park bench and watching everyone pass by was enough.
However, Keiji was by far the one who comforted me in a strange but loving way. He's the only one I'd talk to. I'd spill all my thoughts to, read a book with, cry to, and observe with.
Being very compatible with each and every one of them made life exciting and, oddly, calming.
"Are you cold? We can shut the window if you'd like." Keiji turned his head toward me, pausing his reading.
"I'll put on a hoodie," I said, shaking my head and loving the smell of rain. However, he knew that that would be my answer.
I'd always wrap up in multiple clothing layers instead of shutting the window.
It was a habit.
I crawled away from him as I watched Keiji place my bookmark in the place I was reading.
Slipping on my pink slippers, I walked out of the room, heading towards the clothing room.
Who knew that living with four other people would bless you with an enormously large house? However, the income we all made could quite possibly also be a reason.
As I walked past Kenma's gaming room, I peered in. My eyes were watching him a bit, I could tell even from when he was turned around that his eyes were glued to the screen.
Knowing Kenma, I knew he wasn't wearing his glasses that protected his eyes. He needed them now more than ever, since it's the late hours of the night.
Backing out, I quickly but quietly moved downstairs. His glasses were on the living room coffee table, if I remembered correctly.
When I was on the first floor, I moved to the living room, where his glasses were. Picking them up, I felt the coldness from how long they've been left alone.
The kitchen light on, curiosity peering through me. I peeked in at the sight of Tetsu sitting on the counter, scrolling on his phone.
He was most likely trying to figure out what we'd be feeling up for to eat after rummaging through our cabinets. God, he could be doing nothing and still look so handsome.
I smiled a little and headed back upstairs. Opening Kenma's door more, I could hear soft grunting from him.
Probably because of a level he was having trouble with.
Setting the glasses close to his keyboard, I leaned down and gave him a soft kiss on the temple. He nodded, his cheekbones glowing with a rouge pink shade.
That small peck meant, 'Please don't forget to wear them.' I could always express myself with small things without actually saying them to Kenma and Keiji.
Usually, I'd have to express my thoughts in a verbal way when it came down to Kō and Tetsu. However, I knew not everyone would be an introvert or just a mind reader.
When I left the room, leaving it cracked like before, I saw his game pause and him slip on the clear glasses.
I made my way back to the room, forgetting about the hoodie I needed to get. When I entered, I saw Kōtarō curled up against Keiji.
His hair was slightly dripping wet, making me cringe a bit.
I spotted his towel, which he had brought back with him instead of hanging up in the bathroom. I softly grabbed it and made my way to him.
He perked up; his yellow eyes seemed to shine a bit brighter in the dark.
"The water will make the bed wet, hon" I softly said, lightly ruffling his hair with the towel.
His arms wrapped around my waist as I continued to get the water out. Wetness and comfortable covers do not mix in my book or even on my book.
I could hear him sigh happily as I played with his hair, trying to get out all the water.
Glancing over to Keiji, his glasses were off, and our books had been set elsewhere. It's movie time.
Kenma would come from his gaming in around fifteen to twenty minutes from now. We'd all cuddle on the bed and watch a cartoon movie.
I walked to the bathroom, setting Kōtarō's towel on his hook. In a house of five people, organization was the best key.
After I cut the lights off, I walked back to see a movie picked up and Kuroo coming upstairs with our midnight snacks.
When I made sure everyone was comfortable in bed, I went to get Kenma. I could basically feel the exhaustion radiating off him. Knowing that he wouldn't get off the game unless someone actually got him.
As I got closer, I gently put my arms around his back. I did it every single time I wanted him to get off the game. I could tell he was fighting himself, wanting to go another round but agreeing.
Soon his system was off and his left hand locked in my right one, walking into our bedroom. We climbed into bed; the rotation was different this weekend.
Each day or week, we'd switch the rotation of who gets to spoon who. It wasn't my idea since I couldn't care less if I was spooning or getting spooned.
However, being the only girl it was kinda nice with everyone being bigger than me, it was kind of hot some nights too.
This time around, Tetsu was spooning me, and I happened to be spooning Kōtarō. After we finished the snacks, I couldn't resist the sleep, which called my name.
Since there were five of us, we couldn't possibly fit in a bed. So we decided to just get one of the biggest; even if we did spoon, I'm sure at least one of us would end up kicking another off the bed.
This has always been how our stay-up nights have been and I wouldn't change it for the world.
When I was a little girl, I thought about how a prince would show up outside my bedroom window. He'd take me away to his castle and marry me.
Well, now that I'm older, it's safe to say that I've got four princes who I was fated with. They agreed to live together with me, and the need to marry wasn't in our minds.
We all knew the reassurance of each other never leaving the other. But if one of us did happen to want to marry? I guess we could.
But this is the end of our weekend night and there was nothing out there that would make me give it up.

Fireflies. Lightning bugs. Whatever you want to call them, they still glow in response. As a child it’s all you looked forward to in the hot summer evenings. When the sun would go down enough to not leave beads of sweat cascading down your neck but still up enough that you could see the grass. You wished you could see the color they glowed but, not unlike most you had yet to find your soulmate.
Sometimes if distressed you more than others. You couldn’t have a favorite color when nothing had one. How could you live like this your whole life? Your parents would console you by describing the colors as best they could. The fireflies flashed a shade of yellow-green that looked like how the breeze in early spring smelled. The freshness of the morning dew still hanging off the grass and leaves. In fall when the leaves changed to reds, yellows, and oranges. They explained red felt like coming home after a long trip away, the warmth in your chest as you embraced the comfort of your bed. Yellow felt like finding a lighthouse, a warning not to come too close but delight at reaching land. The delight of finding something. Orange was like the flames that flickered through the crisp winter air. The brilliance that they were able to produce in the chilling air.
While the descriptions helped it still didn’t take away all of the sadness. It was unfair that some people could find their soulmates so easily. Why couldn’t you find yours as easily as others? What if they didn’t like you? Your parents settled that one by reminding you that soulmates were meant to be the other half of you. Not all romantic in nature, some had platonic relations with theirs. Either way it was someone who helped lift you up when you felt down. Your parents hated the phrase that soulmates completed you. A person does not complete you, only you have the power to do that. The second you give someone the power to take part of you away you already became less than you were before.
You also worried about meeting them and not knowing. You would often ask for the story of your parents meeting. They told it slightly differently depending on when you asked them. If they were together it would be “They didn’t like me at first but I charmed them.” And if you asked them separately the reading tone was gone. While neither claimed that it was love at first sight it was a like. An interest in the other person about why the universe had made the other for them. “Their eyes, they were so mesmerizing. I felt like I understood why the universe made me wait so long. I would not have appreciated the way their eyes danced upon the light in my teens. Heck even in my early twenties. But everything clicked when I heard them say my name.”
The stories made you hopeful but also lovesick. “Good things come to those who wait.” A repeated phrase especially when it came to soulmates. If it was so good, why make you wait? You would appreciate them. Your child brain didn’t understand why you didn’t have yours when you had already waited plenty long. In highschool you started to realize the kids who had met their soulmates young missed out. The yearning for someone to love. But that was only a starting realization as you still hoped you would run into them.
Currently your friend is trying to drag you to a volleyball game. How nice of our friends to try and take us to events we don’t want to go to. You’ll also understand the irony a bit later.
“Come on Y/N!” She pulled your arm in the direction that could be assumed to be the gym. You held firm though and literally dragged your heels.
“No. I’ve told you. I have no interest in going, I can’t tonight anyways.” You sighed and could feel the start of a headache.
“Why can’t you?”
“Class project. Remember? You have one too.” You rolled your eyes and pulled out your phone. After a quick scan through your photos you found the one you wanted. A picture that had the details of the project.
“Oh come on. It says it’s not due for another two weeks.” She rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Surely you can skip one night?”
“Sorry. I’ll make it up to you and get some candy for you on the way to school.” She glared but agreed disheartened.
“Fine. But you have to go to one game. Please?”
“Maybe.” She took that as a yes. It would come back to bite you later. For now though she waved as she headed off towards the gym. You headed to your house. Head off in the clouds. You liked to stop and smell the flowers most days. The way people interacted with each other. How the mom greeted her child. The warmth that radiated from the hug. The closeness. The love. Most people went to all possible social gatherings to try and meet their soulmate but you didn’t like crowds. Let alone people pushing and yelling in your ear. Maybe one day you would cater to your friend’s whims. Today was not that day though.
You talked to your friend on your way home. Mostly because they were spamming you. You didn’t understand why they went to the game if she was just going to play on her phone the whole time. Finally though she confessed that she was hoping to find your soulmate. What a dream. To go to the same school as your soulmate. You thought you didn’t have that kind of luck though, let alone having a soulmate on a popular team? No you can scratch that. Not gonna happen.
When you finally arrived home you were exhausted but still had a project to do so you stayed up late to finish it. By the time you were done your neighbor arrived home. His room was across from yours and you would contact each other by the rudimentary cup phone system you made. Enjoying the anonymity you agreed not to give your names or show faces. You sat with your back to the window when you felt a tug on the string. You picked up the cup.
“Hey stranger.”
“Hey yourself. What are you doing up so late?”
You sighed and rubbed your eyes. “I was finishing a project.”
“The one you said wasn’t due for another like two weeks?” He laughed and that brought a smile to your face.
“Yeah, it means I can have time in class for myself.”
“Oh yeah? What are you gonna do instead of your class work?”
“Probably read. I got a new book yesterday and I’m so excited to start it!” Excitement filled your voice and he could see your arms lift excitedly. The curtain blocked you from view but the light made a good enough shadow.
“Tell me about it?” He yawned but tried to hide it. It was his favorite part of the day. When he got to hear you ramble about the things you loved. It made him regret that stupid promise he made. Maybe if you just looked into his eyes you would see the world. One small peek and the two of you could be happy. Or you could be disappointed. He understood why you brought it up. Being friends was enough and the thoughts of soulmates just made everything so much more complicated.
“No, go to bed sleepyhead. I can hear you yawning. Both of us are tired.” He hummed and you smiled once again. Your dropping eyes made it difficult to pay attention to much.
“Fine, I don’t have anything afterschool so we’ll talk more tomorrow yeah?”
“Yeah. Goodbye, stranger.”
“Goodbye stranger.”
The next day had been hectic to say the least. The closer you got to the end of the day though the better. You could feel a smile growing at being able to talk to him again. Your friend, ever helpful, decided to point this out. “What’s got you all smiley? Wait, don’t tell me…stranger boy?”
Your face heated up but nodded. “He’s not doing anything after school and neither am I. So, we’re gonna talk more today.”
“You guys literally talk everyday. What’s gonna happen when we graduate?”
“I’ll think about it when we get closer to graduation. For now let me have my moment of ignorant bliss.” You smiled shyly and moved your food around on the plate.
The bell went off again and you rushed to your next class. On the way you bumped into someone. You said a quick apology and started off again. The boy was taken aback by the quick interaction and watched as you walked off. He thought you were quite beautiful. He couldn’t dwell on that though, he also had a class to get to. After all, the faster the day goes by the closer he gets to talking with his stranger.
Finally, the time has arrived. You barely said hello to your parents as you rushed to your room. You closed the curtain and waited for the telltale tug at the rope. You hoped you hadn’t seemed too eager. Just as thoughts of doubt filled your head a string tugged them out.
“Hello, hello, stranger.”
“My, my, someone picked up quickly.” You rolled your eyes.
“Can I not be excited? You judging me over there stranger?” You heard him laugh. It was such a nice sound.
“I would never. How could you say such a thing.” He paused for a second. Thinking about something. “I’m graduating soon. And I’d rather not lose this friendship.” He stuttered a bit over the word friendship. I mean how would one define this relationship? You had been talking far too long to be actual strangers. However, neither of you knew what the other looked like. Let alone your names.
“We can exchange phone numbers. There, easy peasy.”
“Are you graduating soon?”
“Yeah, it’s funny we didn’t even know we were in the same year. For all we talk you would think it would come up at some point.”
“It is a little funny isn’t it?” This time you were laying down on your window seat. Cup lazily placed next to your ear.
“Anything interesting happen today, stranger?”
“Not really, it kind of went by in a blur. I honestly wasn’t paying that much attention.”
“Aww, was someone excited to talk to little old me?” Although you sounded confident, the goofy smile and hear of your face told a different story.
“Don’t act all high and mighty,” he coughed. “You picked up awful fast.”
“Mhm. And? What about it?”
“I thought I was the flirt in this relationship?”
“Alright, romance me then.”
“That’s not how this works. I’m not a song, you can’t just play me whenever you feel like.”
“Uh huh. I hear an awful lot of talk from someone too chicken to actually flirt with me.”
“I can flirt, I bet you can’t. This is projecting is what it is.” That made you sit up. Projecting? Nope, you’ve never heard such slander.
“You’re far too kind. I bet your face is as kind as your voice.”
“What do you mean?”
“Your voice makes me relax. Like after a long day there’s something to come back to. No matter how tired either one of us is, we still find comfort in each other. You’re my comfort.”
“I’m honored. For the record, you’re my comfort too.” A smile etched itself onto you face.
“You should be. That’s high praise coming from me. Oh my, I hadn’t even realized how late it was getting. Don’t you have stuff before school tomorrow?”
“Thank you so much for pointing that out. I’m sorry we had to cut it short.”
“Don’t worry about it, we stayed up way too late yesterday. Count it as makeup sleep from then.”
“Alright, goodnight stranger.”
“Goodnight stranger.”

Kuroo Tetsurō x Reader
Soulmate AU
born from conversations with @shoulmate 💚 (not edited or beta read)
Tumblr media
Warm sand tickled the bottom of your feet. Digging your toes deeper into the beach you watched your friends play volleyball from your spot on a towel.
University finals were over. As soon as the last exam finished you packed your bags to join your friends for a much needed vacation.
You sat beside Kozume under a large umbrella enjoying the salt air and the crash of the waves. And of course the view of swim trunk, baseball caps, and sunglasses.
Kuroo, Bokuto, and Akaashi were shirtless and sweaty only a few yards away. Alongside other friends the bunch of you had made at Tokyo University. But those three in particular were the sweetest eye candy.
Your fingers slipped under the thick wristband you wore to cover your soulmark. Rubbing the name if your soulmate unconsciously, until Kozume cleared his throat giving you a look. Adjusting your sunglasses on your face you pretended not to notice his stare.
Your friends knew you were one of the few with a soulmate, but you had never shared with them who is was. Kozume, however, was too observant and you suspected he knew. Gratefully he never said anything or pushed you about it.
It happened right before you started high school. You were with your parents filling out paperwork after moving to a new area. Scrolling endlessly on your phone, bored out of your mind, when the skin on your wrist exploded in pain as if on fire. Gasping you cuddled your arm to your chest, tears pricking your eyes.
Curious faces turned towards you. Some confused, others shocked at the outburst. It wasn’t until your parents pried your arm from your body did the realization finally set in. You had gotten a soulmark.
Having a soulmark wasn’t common. Most people knew someone in their extended family or group of friends who had one. They appeared randomly during your mid to late teens if you got one. And not everyone saw it as a blessing.
The mark was a name. The name of your soulmate. But your soulmate would not have a mark. Just having the mark didn’t mean they were close by or did it mean you’d ever meet them.
This caused a lot of problems in relationships. Either you held out for a soulmate who never came or one would randomly pop into your life after you had already settled down with someone else.
But your teenage heart had high hopes that couldn’t be dashed by your parents’ realistic and logical words. It wasn’t that they weren’t happy for you. They just didn’t want their precious child’s heart crushed by this Kuroo Tetsurō whom they didn’t know.
You met Kuroo right after starting high school. He was a year above you. And he was perfect. Handsome, funny, athletic, intelligent, talented, and kind.
Well, you didn’t actually meet him. You heard the name Kuroo Tetsurō and your wrist throbbed alongside your heart in excitement. You rushed to tell him who you were.
That’s when you realized it was no blessing but a curse upon your wrist.
Kuroo was a member of the volleyball team. A second year pillar of the team. Relied upon by his seniors and juniors. His athletic prowess alone was intimidating. Yet he was also studious, beloved by the teachers. He was surrounded his teammates and by fans. Pretty girls, handsome boys.
You tried to worm your way through the crowd to talk to him but the glares you got stopped you in your tracks.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” A voice snapped.
An elbow dug into your ribs, “we were here first.”
Wincing you took a step back from the throng of people. Clutching your arm, you rubbed your wrist. An action you always seemed to do to quell your anxiety. You looked for another way through the crowd. It wasn’t as though you had to tell him today but you wanted to be with your soulmate as soon as possible, believing in a happily ever after.
You could see his head above the others. If only you could get Kuroo’s attention somehow. Trying again to squeeze through the sea of people it wasn’t until someone grabbed your arm did you stop.
The girl had wrenched your arm back trying to see your wrist. “Oh shit you have a soulmark!” You panicked trying to pull yourself free. “Lemme see who it is! Is it one of the guys on the team?”
Ripping your arm back before she could see the name, you gave her a nasty glare. But the damage had been done. Curious faces heard her exclamation and turned towards you.
Another girl lurched towards you and you took a step back. “A soulmark? How neat!”
“Seriously?” Her friend looked suspicious, “she’s gotta be one of maybe 5 people at this school.”
“Who is it?” Someone curious spoke you couldn’t see, “whose name is her mark?”
Nearby a girl scrunched up her nose in disbelief, “Really. Idoubt it. Probably wrote it with sharpie.” She rolled her eyes and the people around her laughed.
“How pathetic,” another scathing voice, “who would want to be tied down to her?”
You couldn’t even see the people laughing at you anymore. Nails biting into the skin of your wrist, you hugged the name Kuroo Tetsurō to your chest. If your legs didn’t give out, your lungs would. You couldn’t breathe.
“I feel sorry for her soulmate.”
“Make her wash her hands and prove it’s real.”
Their words cut deep. Self deprecating thoughts filled your mind. You knew they were just petty but you couldn’t help the tears from forming. Suddenly you didn’t want to meet your soulmate. A burst of strength let you rush off before they could see you cry. Later you thought of ways to hide your mark.
Somehow you had made it through high school without anyone finding out the name on your wrist. A thick wrist band covered the name and you never took it off unless to shower.
A feat especially hard after befriending Kozume Kenma. You shared class with him all three years. After finding out the two of you enjoyed the same video games, a friendship grew and solidified. Unfortunately, that also meant that Kuroo was part of your friends group. Your soulmark wasn’t done cursing you.
Even without the soulmark you liked Kuroo. You couldn’t meet his sharp feline gaze when he seldom spoke to you. Just being around him made you rub the skin beneath the band on your wrist uncontrollably. Your face felt like a furnace anytime he caught you staring, and you stared a lot. And smiled. You didn’t even realize you would just have this dopey grin on your face. Not until Kozume pointed it out. Another reason why you think he knows.
And because of your cowardice, you had to watch Kuroo date other people. You had no one to blame but yourself. But every time you thought to end your misery by spilling your secret, you imagined him asking why it took you so long. Or that he only saw you as a friend.
The feeling of a hand on your arm snapped you from your inner mind. Kozume had grabbed your wrist to prevent you from injuring yourself. It wouldn’t be the first time you’d rubbed the soulmark raw. He called your name and you met his worried golden eyes.
“Sorry,” you tried to laugh it off, “I was spacing out.” Kozume frowned. He opened his mouth but you stood cutting him off. “I think I’m going to wade in a bit. Try and cool off some.”
Dusting off a bit of sand you made your way to the waves without waiting for a response. The water was cool as it gently lapped at your legs. A shiver went down your spine at the temperature difference between the ocean and the hot sun.
A figure sliding beside you made you jump, slipping on the wet sand. Grabbing the person who startled you to avoid plummeting into the ocean, you weren’t expecting intense yellow eyes to stare down at you.
“I scare you that bad?” Kuroo cackled. “I did call your name you know.”
He helped you stabilize yourself and you regretfully released his bicep. The raven stretched, joints cracking. You did your best to not completely ogle him from behind your shades.
“What are you doing over here? I thought you were playing volleyball?”
“Drink break,” broad shoulders shrugged, “gotta stay hydrated.” Kuroo had the gall to wink at you.
You nodded, staying silent. Gazing at the open ocean, unsuccessfully trying to quell your beating heart. Cold water splashed your sides. You shot Kuroo’s smirking face a glare.
“What’s on your mind?” He splashed you again. “You’re even more quiet than usual.”
“Quit that,” you scowled.
He wiggled a finger in your face, “now that’s not very nice. I’m just trying to be friendly.”
“You have plenty of friends to bother.”
“True,” he acknowledged with an obnoxious grin, “but I’d rather bother you.”
You rolled your eyes, splashing him back. Glancing back at your friends you saw Bokuto animatedly telling a story keeping his audience enraptured. Snorting you shook your head, guess Kuroo really was free right now.
“Hey,” squinting you looked back to Kuroo who was pointing to your wrist, “aren’t you worried about the salt water eating through that?”
Tugging at the wrist band you shrugged, “I guess. But it’s not like I can’t get another one.”
“Why not take it off? We are on vacation after all. And who knows you might even meet them here.” Glad Kuroo wasn’t looking at you, you couldn’t help but squeeze your wrist. He was gazing out at the ocean but continued, “if I had a soulmate I know I’d be trying everything to meet them.”
“You don’t seem to need help in that department. You’ve always got girls around you.”
Kuroo frowned looking down at you. “And if you haven’t noticed, not once has any date worked out.”
Snapping the soggy wrist band against the soulmark you couldn’t help asking, “what if…” You floundered uncomfortable under the raven’s intense gaze. “What if, when you met them, you didn’t think it would work?”
Dark eyebrows skyrocketed over his sunglasses, “you’ve already met them? Did you tell them?”
You flinched from his incredulous tone, avoiding meeting his eyes. Shifting your weight you rubbed harder at the name on your wrist.
“Hey,” Kuroo softly called your name, “talk to me.” Why did he look so sad? Not knowing what to say, how to explain, you didn’t speak. He pushes his shades to the top of his head to look at you better despite the bright sunlight. His voice was gentle, “why do you think it wouldn’t work?”
Salt stung at your wrist as the flesh peeled from the harsh friction. You knew you were standing in the surf but it felt like you were being dragged down to the ocean depths.
Kuroo’s body was completely facing you now. You had his full attention. No calling of his name by Bokuto could distract him from you. His rough fingers caressed your arms, trying to keep you from a panic attack. Tears pricked at your eyes.
“I’m not,” you choked out, stopping to clear your throat, “I don’t think… I’m just, just not. And he, he’s… amazing.”
Fingers slid up your arms to grab your face. Both of Kuroo’s large hands cupped your jaw as he looked at you sternly. “Stop that right now,” he growled, “anyone would be lucky to have you as their soulmate. If you don’t stop with this bullshit I’ll start listing reasons at the top of my lungs.” You gaped at him. “I’ll sing them too if it’ll stop you from crying. Poorly I might add.” Using his thumbs to wipe your tears running from under your dark sunglasses, he kept speaking. His voice softer now, “I mean it.”
You couldn’t help but stare at him. He was leaning so close that your noses almost touched. Yellow eyes deeper and brighter than the sun baring down overhead. A mixture of sweat and ocean spray glistened on his skin. Already messed raven hair held down by his sunglasses and whipped every direction by the cool breeze.
“What if it was you,” not even sure he could hear you, you whispered, “what if my soulmate was you? Would you still want a soulmate then?”
Kuroo took a shaky breathe, licking his lips. Using his thumbs, he slowly pushes your shades to the top of your head. “If it were me,” fingers gently traced your jawline, “I’d want to know why you didn’t tell me. If it were me, I’d kiss you until we were both breathless. If it were me, I’d make sure we were never apart for the rest of our lives. Because if it were me who had such an amazing soulmate, there’s nothing less I could do than give you everything.” Hot breath danced across your lips. His golden gaze searching, with a prayer held inside. Reverently, he whispered your name. “Show me, so I can finally kiss you.”
Biting your lip, you fiddled with the soaked wristband hiding your soulmark. Hands shaking you held your wrist up to him. A moment passed before he realized, you wanted him to remove it. One hand moved along your arm while the other rested against your neck. Silently searching your eyes for permission, he removed the offending cover.
There on your wrist, was his name. Kuroo Tetsurō.
Not a moment later was his mouth on yours. And the soulmark curse trapping your heart was finally broken.

Chapter 44 | Chapter 46
I sat on the couch in the hotel, exhausted after the major anxiety spike earlier. Keiji sat on my left and Koutarou used my thighs as pillows. Most of the second and third years were in the common area, the majority of them holding a conversation. Even though Inarizaki was disqualified today, the hotels were paid until the end of the events, so they were staying through to the end of it and simply observing the rest of the matches. There was quite a bit of tension floating around due to Inarizaki's loss, which was understandable. Atsumu seemed to be taking it the hardest, his brother sulking right beside him. Konoha and Sakusa were also sulking due to this but tried their hardest to mask it.
I gave Sakusa a pleading look, knowing that out of anyone, he had the best chance of cheering up the faux blond. He rolled his eyes but moved and stood beside Atsumu. The blond looking up at him with puppy dog eyes while Sakusa sent him a curt nod.
"Hey Osamu, wanna go on a walk?" Konoha asked softly, hands tucked in his pockets. Osamu looked at him with wide eyes but quickly composed himself and nodded, following his soulmate to the door.
Komini poked his head in and awkwardly entered the common area, opting to stand in the corner again.
"Hey Suna, I almost forgot something." I called out to the middle blocker, the quiet boy raising a curious eyebrow at me. I waved him over and showed him the pictures I captured of him with his arms down the sides of his shorts. He glared at me in a nonthreatening way and crossed his arms.
"Delete it." I locked my phone and placed it by Kou.
"Never. Just be happy I'm not sending it in the group chat." I pushed back, knowing it was in good fun.
"I'm watching you, Kaara." He stated casually.
"That sounded a lot creepier than I think you intended." I told him, trying to stifle my laughter. He simply shrugged and returned to the chair he was sitting in. Komini just watched the whole interaction. It made me slightly uncomfortable, however Keiji decided to distract me by playing with my hair, the braids forgone after my shower earlier. I hummed in content and relaxed further into his body. I forced my eyes open so I wouldn't fall asleep and saw that Komini was still staring. I raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to say something but was met with him nodding his head towards the hall. I sighed loudly and stood up, gently moving Kou's head to Keiji's lap. "What?" I asked him softly, still completely drained after earlier. The two of us stood around the corner, still in sight of two of my soulmates.
"What happened earlier?" He asked, clearly trying to reign in his attitude.
"I had a panic attack and it made me throw up, it happens sometimes. What about it?" He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, clearly giving it his all not to be a jerk.
"I meant, why did you have a panic attack over a dumb text? Seems weird." He gritted out, his nice guy act finally gone.
"Just more things you don't know and I don't feel like sharing. To put it into perspective, it would be the same thing if your soulmates mom decided to text your moms ex because she knew him and was still buddy buddy with him." He glared at the ground before directing the look to me.
"How the fuck do you know about that?" He took a step forward and I instinctively took one back but met the wall. My anxiety skyrocketed. I froze and held my breath, my body refusing to move or say anything.
In a matter of seconds, Komori was pushing Komini away while Keiji and Koutarou made a human barrier between us. My eyes darted around nervously, my hands clenched into fists by my sides.
"Kaara, look at us. Okay? You're safe. You're safe here." Keiji said softly. I took a shaking breath and nodded, trying to steady my remaining nerves. "It's okay." I tugged my lower lip between my teeth and wrapped my arms tightly around the two of them. "Do you wanna go upstairs? Or do you want to go back to the common area?" He asked gently, patiently waiting for my response. I mumbled a small 'upstairs' and followed the two up the stairs. "Is it okay if we call Kenma and Tetsurou? They texted the group chat asking if you were alright." My stomach twisted itself with guilt, feeling horrible for worrying everyone. "Hey," Keiji mumbled, slowly bringing his hand up to cup my cheek, angling my face up to look at him, "there's no need for any of that. We like knowing how you're feeling, even if it isn't always a nice feeling. Is it okay if we call them? If not, it's alright, we can always text them."
"I'm okay with calling them." I mumbled, frustrated with myself for how I reacted earlier. I'm stronger then that, I shouldn't have frozen. Koutarou placed a gentle kiss on my temple and wrapped a sturdy arm around my waist.
"Hey, is our little atom okay?" I heard Tetsurou ask through the phone, Keiji putting it on speaker.
"You're on speaker, Tets." The setter stated softly, sitting beside me on the bed.
"Hey, baby, are you okay?" I took in a shaky breath, still trying to find my voice.
"Yeah, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to worry you guys." I said meekly.
"Don't apologize, love." Kenma chimed in. "Do you wanna talk about what happened?" I licked my lips nervously, moving to pick at my fingers until Keiji stopped me by slipping his hand in between my own.
"Uh, Komini wanted to talk so we stepped off to the side. He wanted to know what happened earlier and I explained it briefly, he asked me why I had a panic attack over a dumb text so I compared it to if his soulmates mom decided to text his moms ex boyfriend who was horrible and he got upset and asked me how the fuck I knew about him. He stepped forward and when I backed up I hit the wall and I just froze." I stated blandly, silently disappointed in myself.
"Komori ended up pushing Komini away and Koutarou and I went to Kaara." Keiji finished for me.
"There's nothing wrong with freezing up, sometimes I freeze up when I get really anxious." Koutarou said, trying to help as best as he could.
"I'm just, I'm mad at myself for freezing. I taught myself when not to growing up but I still do sometimes." Keiji looked at the ground intensely, clearly upset that I had to teach myself not to freeze for certain situations.
"It happens sometimes, it might be happening more because you're not in the same environment. There isn't a constant need to protect yourself physically anymore." Tetsurou explained calmly, knowing it was a difficult subject for me to talk about.
"I guess that makes sense.." I mumbled, content to have even a potential answer. "I'm sorry." I whispered, leaning my head on the oldests shoulder.
"What're you apologizing for?" Kenma asked.
"We're all in a relationship now, and right after I confess and join the relationship, I'm already causing issues." I explained, my voice strained.
"You haven't caused any problems, little atom." Tetsurou said gently. I shook my head lightly in minor protest but he kept speaking. "People in your life have been causing problems and have been stressing you out. You didn't ask for that." I sniffled and nodded, melting a little more into Koutarou's warm body. "Do you wanna talk about anything else that happened today?" I knew he was asking about what happened with Kenma's parents so I obliged. I slowly explained a majority that happened earlier with the setter's parents. The four looked pissed and I could feel it flowing through our bond. "We're not mad at you, pretty." I relaxed hearing that, Koutarou's hand coming up to run through my hair. "Feeling better?" I nodded again and took a shaky breath.
"I'm sorry." I mumbled again. "I'm trying not to, but I still feel bad."
"You're trying and that's what counts." Keiji reassured me softly, leaning over to place a kiss on my temple.
"I wish we could come over and help more." Tets said softly, the man pouting on the other end of the electronic.
"It's okay, Tetsurou. It's not your fault." I said softly, watching as a coy smirk came on his face that made me roll my eyes. "Okay, you proved your point."
"Well, I'm sorry about my parents. They shouldn't have commented on anything and my mom shouldn't have texted yours." Kenma said gently while pulling some of his hair back in a low pony tail.
"It's okay, Ken Ken." I whispered, running a hand through my waves with disgust. "Keiji? Can you braid my hair again, please?" I asked him softly, starting to feel myself reach a new point of crashing.
"What did his mom say to you, pretty?" I tugged on my lower lip and tried to work up the courage to say it, knowing I would just be disappointing them again.
"She said I could use some work on my midsection and thighs." I sighed, already feeling guilty about all of their frustrations building up, but I bit my tongue despite what I wanted to say.
"Let it out, love." Kenma told me and it seemed that just let the flood gates snap.
"I don't understand what the hell she's seeing. Yeah, I've gained weight, so what? I am still healthy and then she's going to try and blame it on me quitting volleyball? Bullshit. If she's so close with my mother then she should know it's because I'm no longer only eating portions meant for an elementary schooler. Not my fault that I had to live with a fucking control freak for years who had a conniption fit if I gained a few pounds." Everyone stared at me in disbelief while I just deflated. "Sorry, I didn't mean to raise my voice with any of you or misdirect my anger."
"You little firecracker, we know you weren't taking it out on us. You were just finally letting it out." I sighed, thankful for Tetsurou knowing exactly what I meant with my tangent. "And she had no right to comment on your body, plus she has no idea what she's talking about, your stomach and thighs are to die for." I blushed and rolled my eyes since I couldn't move my head while Keiji braided it.
"No, he's right. I want to take a nap on your thigh pillows after the tournaments are over." Kenma told me point blank.
"Fine, you can take a nap on them after nationals." He smiled lightly at the confirmation.
"Feeling better, cutie?" Koutarou asked me before placing a swift kiss on my cheek.
"A little." I whispered, giving him a tender smile. In turn, he gave me a bright, wide smile, easily making me smile a little more.
I sat there while the boys talked, basking in their presence. My hair was soon braided, Kenma and Tetsurou went to bed, and soon, Keiji, Kou and I did the same. I laid between Koutarou and Keiji, curling into the latter's chest while Koutarou spooned me. Sleep came quickly and all consuming, so much so, it was difficult to wake up in the morning.
I managed to drag myself out of bed, Koutarou jokingly pulling me off the mattress before him and Keiji got changed. He gave me a kiss on the cheek and said he would see me downstairs. I rifled through my bag and found a pair of thermal leggings and a cropped tank top with a small sweetheart neckline that went down just far enough to show the top of Koutarou’s owl while displaying most of Keiji’s books. But I couldn’t find anything to layer it with. On a whim, I wrapped my arms around my stomach and went downstairs in search of two of my boyfriends. Kou stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me, Keiji simply smirking softly.
“Damn, Kaara. Lookin’ good.” Atsumu said as he came around behind me, making me roll my eyes.
“Shut up, Atsumu.” Osamu said as he walked in after. I quickly walked up to my boyfriends, Koutarou’s eyes glued to my chest. More specifically, the small bit of an owl peaking out.
“Do either of you have a flannel I can borrow?” I asked softly in a hushed voice.
“I have one in my bag, do you want me to grab it for you or will you be able to find it?” Keiji asked calmly before sipping on his tea.
“I should be able to find it, thank you.” I said quickly, giving each of them a kiss on the cheek before rushing back upstairs.
It didn’t take me long to find the flannel Keiji was talking about, a classic red and black one that paired nicely with my slightly off white tank top. I put in all of my earrings, tamed a few of my fly aways and went back downstairs, Koutarou instantly coming to my side, picking me up and spinning me around, effectively making me laugh while I clung onto his shoulders.
“Good morning.” I said through a few subsiding laughs once he set me down.
“Good morning!” He replied cheerfully, a bright smile on his face. Keiji came up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, pulling me back to his chest a little.
“Good morning.” I said to the raven haired boy, leaning my head back slightly to look at him.
“Good morning, little opus.” He said in a gravelly voice, lips brushing against the shell of my ear and sending chills down my spine. “I made you coffee, thought you might want a pick me up.”
“You both are amazing, thank you.” I said, happily making my way to my coffee and taking a sip, humming in delight at its perfection. “So who are you playing today?”
“We’re playing Matsuyama, Tets and Ken are playing Karasuno.” Keiji informed.
“I’ll try and get a good spot between your courts again so I can watch all of you play.” I told them contently.
“We’ll sit with you, I wanna watch shrimpy play.” Atsumu chimed in while munching on his breakfast.
“Okay, I’ll find you guys when we get off the busses.” I told them, happily drinking my coffee.
Tetsurou stopped in his tracks before rushing over and scooping me up. Kenma dragged his feet behind him, clearly still exhausted after yesterday, so much so, his mask wasn’t even properly on his face. I gave Tetsurou a peck on the lips before moving to Kenma and giving him a tight hug.
“You look pretty, button.” He mumbled into my ear, relaxing a little in my hold.
“Thank you, love.” I whispered back to him, just loud enough for him to hear over the crowd in the stadium.
“We have to go warm up.” He told me, the others chiming in saying the same thing.
“Okay, I’m gonna go find a seat with the boys from Inarizaki.” I said, giving each of them a hug and kiss before finding Atsumu, Osamu, Suna, Aran and Kita.
“Ready to go find a spot, shorty?” Atsumu asked once I walked over, gesturing for me to lead the way. Full of excitement, I made my way through the crowd, the five following me closely as I rushed to the stairs.
“Kaara?” I heard someone ask, a voice all too familiar sending chills down my spine and tumbling in my stomach once I came face to face with what felt like a mirror.
“Mom?”

Can someone help me find this fanfic? I don't remember where it's from or the title but the description is along the lines of: When you sleep you can see what your soulmate sees. It's a haikyuu x reader, it includes nekoma and an oc but mostly Kenma x Reader and Kuroo x Oc. That's all I remember.

“What...?” Yaku looks back around in case he somehow missed something but he's right, there really isn't anything there. There's no other person here.

Finally the Yakulev soulmate story is finished!!
I’ve been working on it for so long that it was pretty tedious to edit but I got through it! I didn’t expect it to be so long but this is likely going to be the absolute longest soulmate story, I’m almost 100% positive!

Pairing: Tetsurō Kuroo x fem!reader

Genre: fluff, soulmate au

“I don’t know, Ken.” I sigh, my eyes darting around my room trying to avoid his piercing eyes. His watchful, can-see-through-me eyes.
Kenma was gathered on my bed, effectively ruffling my bedding that I perfectly made this morning. His two-toned hair framed his soft face, however, the dark golden eyes that he possessed were anything but.
“Hm. You talk about how you want your soulmate but then switch and say you don’t want one..” He trails off, reading right through me.
It’s not like I don’t want a soulmate per se, it’s just that I’m nervous. I mean, a person who is destined to love me forever? Sounds a lot like baloney.
Kenma and I have been friends for a while, ever since I took interest in new hobbies like video games we’ve been friends. However, much to his dissatisfaction and annoyance, I only play animal crossing.
He’s helped me with any anxiety moment I’ve had within the last few years, including this one.
“You’re of age.” He comments, his voice giving me all the comfort and confidence I need. Taking one last glance at me, he unpaused his game on his nintendo switch and continued.
The sounds of game shooting was lightly heard as I sunk farther into my desk chair. My window was open and the breeze flew through my hair, brushing small strands against my cheeks. I looked out to the bright blue sky and right then and there I finalized my decision.
I would write to them.
Being 18 meant that I’d have access to contacting my soulmate through writing on my skin. I’ve never written before but it’s been two months since I’ve turned 18 and it’s due.
I wouldn’t even know if my soulmate would write back. What if they were not 18 yet? What if they’re already in a relationship? What if we don’t speak the same language?
What if I don’t have one?
These thoughts rushed through my head at once. I immediately sat up straight and grabbed the pink pen that was sitting on my white desk.
I’ll put an end to my thinking, besides there’s a huge chance they wouldn’t respond, right?
Without stopping my movements I wrote a little, ‘Hi’ on my left arm in pink ink.
I breathed a sigh of relief, I didn’t need to worry about not contacting my soulmate anymore.
Putting that behind me I raised my arm up to show Kenma, “Ken, I did it.” I spoke into the semi-quiet silence.
Without so much as a glance, “I knew you would. Didn’t realize it’d take you this long.”
I could practically hear the taunting in his voice knowing that he meant it. I was a bit of a scaredy cat sometimes.
“They won’t even respond,” I commented nervously.
An entire night passed by in which I sent Kenma home from my house, having tired of his presence. I still hadn’t had a response from my soulmate by then and I wasn’t worried that much anymore.
I would even go on a limb and say that I was kind of content, until I felt a small tickling coming from my right arm. My eyes widened as I roughly shoved my long-sleeved shirt arm up.
‘Hey :)’ was written on my arm. The hand writing seemed neat and sloppy at the same time. It was in a green pen, kind of a weird color in my opinion.
I couldn’t help the rate of my heart as I stared at the word. I thought so many things about my soulmate but I never realized that I would get a response. Or one with a smiley face for that matter.
I couldn’t help but to pull my sleeve down, the message getting hidden within my sleeve. I don’t think I’m that ready yet. Maybe a shower will help me feel like in tune and confident again to respond.
However, that turned into maybe a nights rest, a breakfast bowl, talking with Kenma and until it was lunchtime the next day.
“Stop. Here, respond.” Kenma’s sharp voice spoke, his eyes telling the same story as his voice.
The one person I couldn’t escape that makes me do the shit that I actually need to do.
I nervously furrowed my brows and took the pen from him. Our lunch was spent on the rooftop only because I absolutely begged Kenma to come with me. I needed support in these harsh times but he decided to torture me.
“Fine,” My voice nervously grew.
With a shaker hand I started with, ‘Sorry, busy day. I guess I’m your soulmate’
It was cringe and awkward but it got the job done. I looked at my handiwork for two seconds before trying to take a bite of my food from my bento box.
‘Avoiding me, soulmate?’
A reply came quick from the other half of me. My eyes bulged out of my head but before I could pretend it didn’t happen an irritating voice spoke.
“Do I really need to write for you?” Kenma annoyingly spoke as if I was inconveniencing him by not responding to my soulmate.
“Uhgm, no,” I grumbled and fastened my lunch box then continued with the ink pen.
‘Never!’
I slightly smiled, even though I didn’t even know the first thing about love or my soulmate, it was kind of fun trying to continue a conversation.
‘What’s your name ;)’
A writing came back to me quickly. I used some of my germ-x on a tissue to wipe off my writings because I wasn’t ambidextrous. I had a feeling my soulmate could be since I was getting writings on both of my arms.
‘Call me (Y/n)’ I responded after my skin dried enough for me to write on it.
The breeze of the wind calmed me down more, it always seemed to ground me in times like these.
That’s really how I spent my lunch break with Kenma. It wasn’t really with Kenma but writing to my soulmate instead, with Ken’s pushing of course.
By the end of my lunch break I had a nickname for my soulmate which was, ‘Tetsu’. He was 6’2, same age as me, and his favorite color was red. I thought it was strange how much of a coincidence it was that he had to go at the same time I did.
The chiming of the bells signaled for us to pack up and head to our next classes. Going to school at Nekoma was pretty great. I had a best friend who pushed me to my best in his own way. I was pretty good with my academics and never needed tutoring.
It seemed as if the summertime coming up was the perfect time, adding along the newfound excitement I’ve gotten from speaking with my soulmate.
Every time we talked it was so captivating that I even had stopped and wrote to him in class sometimes. That was really unlike my usual. My usual was always paying attention, helping my classmates around me and taking notes to study later.
A random thought crashed against my head while I was studiously gazing outside the window of my class. I could never get enough of the beautiful weather and view.
When was my soulmates birthday?
My birthday was February 28th and now it’s two months later but from how soon Tetsu responded to my message wouldn’t that mean he’s been 18 longer than I have? And if he’s been 18 longer than I have, why didn’t he write me?
I slowed my pace, my eyes drifted down to the slowing steps of my black indoor shoes. The embarrassment ranged through me as I came to a hurtful conclusion.
I wrote at the wrong time. Tetsu wasn’t ready for me. I probably inconvenienced him because I’m just that helpless of a person.
The annoying tears stung my eyes as I changed into my regular shoes from my locker. I couldn’t believe how stupid I was to really think that he would want me. He doesn’t even know me, hasn’t even met me.
“(Y/n).”
I looked up from my walk outside the school to see Kenma with his bag slung across his shoulder. His other hand holding his game. My bottom lip trembled as I could unfortunately see the sympathy in his eyes. He didn’t even know what happened and he cares.
I ran into his arms, not caring about who was around to see. It’s not really like anyone was and if they were they kept to their own business.
He sighed and rubbed my back with his free hand as a couple of tears slipped from my eyes onto his uniform which soaked them up like a sponge.
I heard footsteps coming towards us until a small movement from Kenma made the footsteps start to retreat.
A scary thought passed through my head at that exact moment, how I wished Kenma was my soulmate.
The lump in my throat only grew when I slowly broke the semi-hug he tried to comfort me with.
Blinking back the embarrassing tears, I gave him a somewhat half smile and started to continue my—our— walk to my house.
“So, want to tell me or do you need me?” Kenma quietly asked, poking me on the back of my head when I collapsed face down into my bed.
“You.” My voiced muffled but I’m sure he clearly heard it.
A sigh was heard before he climbed into the bed with me. He sat up right, his hand delicately stroking my shoulder and back comfortingly.
“Ken, this sounds bad.. but I wished you were my soulmate today instead of him..” I quietly mumbled, it wasn’t something that would come true. Kenma didn’t have feelings for me and I didn’t have feelings for him. It was a mutual respect kind of thing between us but I know with me saying that, I crossed a line.
Kenma took a sharp intake of air and then immediately began to gather his things from my floor.
“Ken? Kenma, what are you doing?” I worriedly questioned, hoping and praying that I didn’t just lose my only real friend.
“Leaving. You can’t just say things like that (Y/n). You don’t know him yet, nor his feelings.” His cold voice cooley told me. He left, closing my bedroom door while he was at it without so much as a spare glance at me.
I couldn’t stop the tears. I wasn’t surprised how my actions led me here, more so my overthinking. I shoved my head into my hands, negatively ignoring the harsh grazing at my arms repeatedly throughout the night.
I trudged into school with an umbrella in hand. Of course it decided to rain when I wasn’t feeling the best. Kenma hadn’t answered any of my messages I sent him. Coincidentally, I hadn’t answered any of the words Tetsu had wrote me.
I shoved my things into my locker and realized I had forgotten the time and was going to be late to class. That is until an announcement came on to the intercom scaring me into next year.
“Lockdown. Lockdown. I repeat Lockdown, lockdown. This is not a drill.” The monotone voice spoke out and sent a shrill of fear through my body. Almost every classroom was closed or beginning to be closed.
I panicked, I started running through the empty halls trying to find somewhere, anywhere, to hide myself.
A hand grabbed my own and yanked me into what looked like a cleaning closet. I was about to scream until a large hand covered my mouth. I couldn’t see in the darkness but heard a low, soothing voice.
“It’s okay. I’m a student too.” The male tried to comfort me in my panicked state.
A lock sound was heard from our side of the door, he locked it. The fearful nerves calmed down a bit but being this close to the door and my breathing being this rapid wasn’t helping.
Turns out there was a lot of space in the cleaning closet. The good thing was we were able to hide ourselves behind plenty of cleaning outfits and supplies. The bad thing was in order for no one to hear me from outside the door, we had to be trapped in close.
My knees were pressed against the males’ as I tried to calm my breathing down.
“Are you okay? I know this is scary.” He soothed me, a gentle hand coming to lay on my knee.
He was trying to ground me from my fear.
It was hard to see him but after taking the voice into account I definitely recognized it. I’ve heard this voice in some of my classes before too.
“I’m fine. Thanks for helping and hiding me.” I whispered, I knew that no one would be able to hear me but I whispered anyway.
“Of course, (Y/n).” He spoke out, making me freeze. How did he know my name? I didn’t even know his.
“You know me? Isn’t that amazing?” I embarrassingly said, thankful he couldn’t necessarily see how red my face was turning.
“I think I should know the name of my soulmate, considering how she’s friends with my same friend.” He easily said and I nearly combusted.
“What’s your name?” I warily asked, I wouldn’t dare take his word for real until I knew his name. There wouldn’t be any way that my soulmate was here with me in this cleaning closet.
“Kuroo.”
“Oh.” My voice came out sounding nearly like disappointment. He’s not my soulmate. My heart stopped beating as fast as it had and seemed to be beating slower due to the angst feeling inside of me.
“Sorry, I just thought—I’ve been trying to—well, I mean that I-“ I exhaled, stopping my stammering which only happened in states like these that I’m in.
“The first name is Tetsurō.” He stated to me, I could feel the piercing gaze from him.
It all suddenly clicked right then and there. What Kenma said about reaching out, about not considering everything, about the nickname my soulmate gave me.
It hit me like a ton of bricks.
“You’re Tetsu..” I trailed, my voice evident of shock.
Suddenly the position we both were in seemed a little too intimate and intense for me. I tried shifting a bit to give me a clear head but only made us close by adjusting my legs on him.
Kuroo’s warm hands held my legs in place, “I tried writing to you, (Y/n).” He did his best to hold my gaze before I looked away into the darkness.
“I tried for three months. I didn’t give up because I had hope, I just thought when you’d turn of age you’d finally write me.” He tried to devoid his voice from any emotion but I could hear it, feel it even.
“Three months? I’m sorry, I’m so sorry Kuroo. I was just so nervous, I just couldn’t.” I tried explaining to him why I had did what I did.
“I know, I’m friends with Kenma you know? I wanted you to come to me by your own ways but I suppose I did push Kenma a bit. Telling him to crack down on you, giving him advice how to comfort you. I just knew when I saw you on your birthday and it was you.”
Words could not explain how much those simple sentences meant the world to me. Kuroo did all of that to ensure that I was ready to come to him.
My heart melted.
“Thank you, for letting me come at my time.” I shyly confessed, still hiding—or trying to—hide myself.
“You’re welcome, soulmate. I needed a way to help you calm down and decided why not today to do it?” He chuckled, patting my thigh with his warm hand.
I couldn’t take it anymore. Maybe it was the way he knew me. Maybe it was the way he let me come to him—with the help of our friend. Maybe it was just him.
The ear prickling noise of the intercom announced that the lockdown was over and deemed it as a successful drill.
I was scared for no reason, my annoyance was something that couldn’t be stopped. I seriously thought I was in danger.
Kuroo and I shuffled out of the closet and I got a good look at him. More so the height difference between us.
“How about we hit up a tea shop on the way home?” Tetsu offered, a little shine to his dark eyes when speaking to me.
Putting my nervousness aside, I agreed. After that we couldn’t stop writing to each other because it seemed way more intimate than texting.
However, I did share my findings with Kenma. He was pretty proud of me—in his own way—of finding my soulmate.
I couldn’t wait for those bells to chime, signaling the tea date I’d have with Tetsu.

Kuroo Tetsurou and Kozume Kenma x GN!Reader
Title: Isn't Three A Crowd? Genre: Fluff Warnings: Reader doesn't believe in soulmates, OOC Iwaizumi, light swearing, slow burn, darkish back story for reader, reader has a panic attack Word count: 5721
SOULMATE AU! IN WHICH WHEN YOURE BORN, YOU HAVE THE WORDS OF WHAT YOUR SOULMATE WILL FIRST SAY TO YOU WRITTEN ON YOUR BODY!
POST TIME SKIP!!!
'Sorry shortstack, you alright?'
'I'm sorry about him.'
Those words have daunted you since the day you were born. Marked on your shoulders and to never go away.
Everyone has a soulmate, nobody is quite sure how it started so we assume it's been around since the start of time. Some people get blessed with more than one. That started about twenty five years ago, so after that started, all countries legalized polyamorous marriages to accommodate. But you?
You don't believe it one bit.
Who's to tell you who you're destined and predetermined to live the rest of your life with? Who's to tell you, you can't date who you already have feelings for before you meet your so called lovers for life?
That's how you came to be in a relationship now. It's sort of a worst case scenario dating app that you met Iwaizumi Hajime on. It was made for non believers or people who have lost their other halves and want to try again. With Hajime being an athletic trainer and having a weird schedule because of his gym, you don't see each other as much as either of you would want to, but you've been making it work for six months now. And honestly? You're happy. You're happy that despite the odds you're making it. You're happy that there isn't a rift because you weren't predestined or whatever. But now you're here, facing a reality that you've grown to hate.
Walking home after work to a currently empty apartment isn't ideal. Especially when you have a large bag of snacks in your hand. Your house is in sight, just two doors down. Quickly, you started shuffling for your keys to have them prepared to unlock the door until someone walked into you, your bag falling to the ground.
"Sorry shortstack, you alright?" Your heart clenched as you instantly recognized those four words.
"Perfectly fucking fine." Where the hell did that come from?
The taller man that bumped into you knelt down beside your crouched figure, aiding you in putting the few fallen snacks back in the bag. Your hands shook slightly at the sudden revelation of meeting the soulmates that you didn't need nor want.
"You gonna say anything else, pretty one?" You fought back the feeling that tried erupting inside of you.
"Kuroo, shut up." The other sighed and turned to you. "I'm sorry about him." Your body stiffened at the other four worded phrase you also knew all too well.
"It's not your fault." Tears welled in your eyes before you abruptly stood and grabbed your keys and bag. "Thanks, have a nice night." The door is so close. You can see it.
"Hey, wait up!" You walked faster and turned to your door, fumbling to unlock it. You made the mistake of turning your head to see the one supposedly called Kuroo, speed walking towards you. In the knick of time, you got the right key and opened the door, along with closing it in the blink of an eye. One tear fell and then another as you slumped against the wooden barrier to the outside world.
"Tets.. I don't think they really want to talk right now. Let's give them some space.. you remember how I first reacted when I found out?" Kuroo sighed and slumped, walking back towards his boyfriend. "Let's go get that ice cream, yeah?" The taller of the two nodded and linked pinkies with his lover of fifteen years. They wanted to get married, but they both decided to wait until they found their third person and they were ready for marriage as well.
"Pudding," Kenma's head turned up to Kuroo in acknowledgement, "that was Iwaizumi's house though. What if-" Tetsurou let out a defeated sigh.
"Don't let your mind run too much. They're our neighbor, we're bound to see them again." Kuroo simply nodded and placed a quick kiss to the top of Kenma's head.
——————
The next time you saw the two, it was on your way home from work. The sun hadn't even fully set yet and you still had a block to go walking wise. That's when you heard them. The two of them walking a decent pace behind you when you heard the one that bumped into you say something along the lines of 'I'm going to go talk to them'. You picked up the pace, walking faster until you felt a hand grab your wrist ever so gently.
"Hey, I was hoping to see you again." You scoffed and rolled your eyes, tugging your hand away from his grasp, ignoring the little shocks it sent through your body at his touch.
"Well, now you've seen me." The male with black hair, who clearly just wore his bed head everyday, rolled his eyes.
"I don't understand why you keep trying to fight this, if you haven't noticed, we're your soulmates." The shorter one with grown out bleached hair, stood awkwardly to side, clearly uncomfortable with his boyfriends actions.
"I'm sorry that this'll hurt but I don't believe in soulmates. I never have and I doubt I ever will. So please, stop trying to push this. I'm in a relationship and I'm fairly happy with it. I've gone twenty seven years without soulmates and not believing in them, saying the words you were supposed to doesn't change that. I'm sorry, I truly am. But please respect that." The man with hair that resembled a rooster slumped, visibly deflating.
"You're perfectly fine. I'm sorry about him, I tried telling him that if you were interested you would've come and knocked since we live next door but he didn't want to listen, he's fairly ambitious." Your head shot towards the shorter one of the two, he had two toned hair and wore a tucked in button down shirt with slacks.
"Thank you for understanding, now if you don't mind, I'll be on my way." You bowed slightly and turned to start your walk back home. Trying to ignore the two behind you since they live next door. You were nearly home when you heard the taller one speak to you again.
"Wait!" You audibly sighed and kept walking until he ran in front of you. "We don't have to date. Just hear me out, please. I know you don't believe but we do, and I can already feel the soulmate bond between us. If you don't want to date or do anything romantic then I'll respect that. But can we at least try to be friends with you? Please? In the last week, I've felt miserable, if you don't believe e then you can ask Kenma." You mulled it over in silence. You can't deny that for some reason your emotions have been out of wack. Is it really the bond? The bond that you have hated all this time? It would be one thing to brush off if it just effected you, but it's affecting two other people now.
"Fine, we can become friends. I think you're right and that would be a fair middle ground." The taller one visibly lit up.
"I'm Kuroo Tetsurou, and this is Kozume Kenma."
"It's nice to meet you both. I'm L/N Y/N." Kozume smiled softly in acknowledgement before you walked into your house.
"You're going to try and win them over, aren't you?" Kenma asked his lover.
"You know it."
"Welcome home." Hajime stated gruffly before wrapping you in his arms.
"Hi baby." You smiled and ever so slightly blushed.
It was later at night when you checked your phone again. You were surprised to see two new followers on Instagram.
KurooTetsuVB started following you.
KodzuKenYT started following you.
Your eyes widen at the realization of the two names. You looked over, finding Hajime fast asleep. You don't know what came over you, but you clicked on their profiles. First you clicked on Kuroo's profile. It was organized and surprisingly enough, almost all volleyball.
JVA - Sports Promotion Division
'Games are better than people' 'Perfectly fucking fine' Nekoma High School Alumni
Scrolling further down, you saw multiple pictures of him with different volleyball teams, players and Kenma. You found yourself down to his high school days, him and Kenma wearing red jerseys with the numbers one and five on them. In a haste decision, you followed him back then moved into Kozume's page.
Bouncing Ball Corp. Ceo
Pro-gamer | Youtuber Nekoma High School Alumni | Tokyo University Graduate
'Why are you always on that game?' | 'It's not your fault' (Kuroo made me put these here)
You laughed softly at that, barely knowing the two, it seemed like Kuroo. You saw pictures of him in a gaming chair, a few of him and Kuroo and a few from high school. With a haste decision, you followed him as well. But how had you not realized he was your boss?
"Kenma! They followed me back!" He stared at your instagram profile, a slight pang hitting his chest at your bio.
Shift Manager at Bouncing Ball Corp.
Hajime - 9/18/2020 <3 Fukuroudani High School Alumni Tokyo University Graduate
How did Kenma and I never notice them if they went to the same college and work for Bouncing Ball? A decent amount of our friends follow them too, how hadn't we talked sooner?
Kuroo sighed at his thoughts, sure he said he would settle for friends but in reality? He wanted to win you over.
"They followed me back too. I didn't realize they worked for me. Sure they looked familiar but I just assumed it's because we were neighbors." Kuroo's head turned at the sound of Kenma's voice, seeing his fiancé standing in the doorway.
"I wonder what made them hate the idea of soulmates so much." Kenma hummed and sat on Kuroo's lap.
The rooster headed man was sitting in a large living room chair that they kept in their room, facing out to their window to the backyard. The chair was perfect for three people to cuddle closely on, right in between the size of a loveseat and a regular chair. They both silently wished for their final part to be with them but sought comfort in each other for the night.
——————
"We should hang out." The familiar voice of Kuroo interrupted your thoughts at your work desk.
"I'm at work right now, unless you suddenly got hired then I see no reason to talk with you right now. I have a lot of paperwork to fill out and get sent where it needs to in a short amount of time." You looked exhausted, anyone could tell you haven't been sleeping properly in the last few days.
He stopped and looked at you, really looked at you.
"Are you okay, sweetheart? You look a little tired." You met his eye, ready to bite back with a snarky remark about him calling you 'sweetheart' when you realized; he was genuinely concerned. He wasn't even trying to flirt, he was worried about your well being. Your whole façade almost fell right there but you kept it up as strong as you could.
"Yeah, I'm fine, just having a hard time sleeping the last few nights. No need to worry." He hummed before speaking again.
"I'll run and grab you a coffee or something with caffeine in it, to help get you through the next few hours. What do you want?" You stared at him in shock before telling him your order and before you could grab your card, he was walking away.
Kuroo swung up to Kenma's office with a smile on his face, asking him what he wanted to drink or anything to eat when Kenma stopped him.
"What has you smiling so much?"
"L/N is letting me get a drink for them and didn't tell me a point blank 'no' to hanging out." Kenma sighed and smiled at his boyfriends antics. "Okay, I'll be back."
"Here you go." You stared up at Kuroo like he was a god-sent angel.
"Thank you, so much. Honestly, you have no idea how much I was struggling just to keep my eyes open." Kuroo laughed softly, and something about it warmed your heart.
No, stupid soulmate feelings. Go away. You thought to yourself.
"So about hanging out. KenKen told me that Saturdays are your off days. You wanna come over to our house tomorrow and hang out? Just watch some movies, maybe play some video games." You mulled it over, Hajime said he wouldn't be home until Sunday night because he was at a high school reunion thing back in Miyagi.
"Sure, I have nothing better to do, so why not. We're friends after all." A piece of Kuroo's heart crumbled at the forbidden 'f' word. But he nodded and smiled through it like a champ.
"Okay, tomorrow, three o'clock." You nodded and watched as he walked away, and for some unknown reason, a smile was creeping up on your face.
The next day, you woke up after about three hours of on and off sleep, at eleven in the morning. You took your time shower, doing your hair and eating breakfast. Figuring that you had four hours and had to wake up. By the time you were done it was 1:30 in the afternoon. You tried calling Hajime, to atleast talk to him a little bit today, but on the first ring he sent you to voicemail. You weren't one to be jealous or anything, but something about this worried you.
You knocked on the door and it immediately flew open to reveal Kuroo towering over you.
"Hey sweetheart, glad you decided to show up." You rolled your eyes at the name he insisted on calling you before stepping in and sliding off your shoes. Your outfit consisted of plain, black jeans, a white t-shirt and a (f/c) flannel overtop.
"Hi L/N." Kozume came out wearing a pair of joggers and one of his brands hoodies.
"Hello Kozume."
"Just Kenma is fine, nobody really calls me by my last name."
"Okay Kenma." You tested the name on your tongue and some part of you liked how it sounded.
"So he gets a hello but I don't?" Kuroo jokingly jabbed at you as the three of you made it to the living room.
"Hi Kuroo." He smiled at you kindly before sitting down on the sofa.
"You can sit down too sweetheart, we don't bite. What kinda movie do you want to watch?" You awkwardly sat down and shrugged, lighting up as a cat jumped and nuzzled into your lap.
"You pick."
Two movies later and half an hour of video games with Kenma, you had to say, you were in fact having fun. You were laughing hysterically. Not because you found something funny, well, other than Kuroo's hyena laugh.
Both boys watched you laugh to your hearts content, their own fluttering at the magical sound.
"Kuroo, now I know what Konoha meant by you having a hyena laugh!" He made a sound out of faux offense and hit you in the face with a throw pillow.
You laughed, wholeheartedly, and grabbed the one you were sitting against, hitting him over the head with it. You went back and forth, stopping when your phone started ringing.
"Hold on I'm getting a phone call. Hello?" You were so caught up in the events that you'd forgotten to check the caller ID.
"Hey Y/N, you okay? You sound outta breath." You stood up and shuffled towards the hallway. For some reason this just felt awkward.
"Yeah, I'm okay Hajime. I'm just hanging out with a coworker and we got into a pillow fight." He hummed, slightly amused. "What time are you coming home tomorrow? I miss you." It was silent for a moment and you nervously started biting your nail.
"I'll be home late.. Shittykawa is here too, he's stopping back from Brazil so it has to be important." You nodded your head in understanding before realizing he couldn't see you.
"It's okay, babe. I'll see you tomorrow, yeah?"
"Okay, go get some sleep, bye baby."
"Bye, I lo-" But he hung up before you could get the rest of the words out, "-ve you.." Now you sounded defeated. Something was definitely wrong. Walking back out, you tried your best to hide your emotions from the two but they caught on right away.
"Everything okay, sweetheart?" You nodded mindlessly and sat back down. The two boys shared a look before Kuroo turned back to you. "What's going on?"
"Nothing you'd want to hear about, I'll be okay."
"I wanna hear about it though." You looked up, shocked by his gentle, saccharine voice. Once again, he was being genuine. Hajime never wanted to hear about your problems..
"Uh, just relationship stuff. I'm sure it'll be fine." Kenma could tell that you were getting uncomfortable and quickly redirected the situation.
"Why don't we finish this level? Before it restarts?" You nodded quickly, you both knew it wouldn't restart but it was a decent enough cover.
Why did that just make your heart feel all fuzzy?
——————
Soon enough, you all had regular hang out sessions. Sometimes one on one and other times in a group. On any of your off days when Hajime wasn't home, you'd find yourself next door instead. This went on for months, for five months on all your fully free off days you found yourself out of the house.
But the odds are never wrong, people who aren't soulmates won't last. Even if it's your one year anniversary.
"I'm breaking up with you." Those words drove a knife through your heart and you couldn't stop the immediate stream of tears.
"Can I at least know why?" Hajime's heart clenched at the sound of yours breaking.
"I met my soulmate, and I haven't stayed loyal over the last few months. I- I thought if I pushed them away it would be better, but I couldn't do it anymore."
"So all those late nights at work?" It was silent as he nodded and you choked back a sob.
"I should've told you sooner, I'm sorry. I know I can't go back and change things. You deserve someone who won't hurt you. You can stay here until you find a place to stay." You shook your head at his words and scooted away from his outstretched hand, the one that used to hold yours and bring you so much comfort.
"I'm staying somewhere else tonight, I'll be back in the morning to grab my things and leave your key." You didn't give him a chance to speak as you went to the bedroom and started packing an overnight bag. He followed you to the room but you kept a distance, not being able to look at him.
"Y/N, please.."
"Iwa, I thought you were gonna tell me you got a promotion, or that you got me something special! It was our fucking anniversary, you couldn't have told me sooner? Please just move, I can't do this right now." His head dropped and he stepped out of your way, along you to walk straight out the front door into the pouring rain.
You stood there for a moment before walking up and down the block, realizing there wasn't anywhere you could really go. You were drenched, clothes sopping wet with chills down to the bone. And that's how you found yourself outside of Kuroo and Kenma's doorstep at eleven thirty at night. You quietly and hesitantly knocked on the door, surprised when it flew open so fast. Kuroo stood there, his face dropping as he pulled you into a tight hug.
"Tets? Who was at the door?" Kenma's face fell at the sight of you sobbing into Kuroo's chest.
"Sweetheart, what happened?"
"H-He cheated." Kuroo just held you tighter. His heart and mind raging at the fact Iwaizumi did that to you.
"C'mon, let's get you dried off and into some warm clothes then we can talk, yeah?" You nodded and allowed his warm hand to hold your freezing one, guiding you to their master bathroom upstairs. It was a large, en-suite bathroom. Kenma handed you a towel and a hoodie, since he was convinced you didn't bring one, and he was right.
"I'm going to go make some tea." You nodded thankfully and stared at the door as the handle clicked.
You slowly changed out of your clothes, hanging them over the edge of the tub to dry. By some miracle, your undergarments were mostly dry, so you changed into a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and the hoodie that Kenma handed you. You immediately recognized it as one of Bouncing Balls earlier designed hoodies. You ruffled your hair with the towel one last time before finally leaving the isolation in the bathroom. Kuroo's eyes immediately snapped towards you, his heart sinking a little at your puffy, bloodshot eyes.
"I uh, left the clothes on the tub to dry."
"I'll toss them in the wash in a bit." He pulled you into a hug again, your head resting under his chin as you fought back another wave of tears. "Let's go get some tea and we can talk, yeah?" You nodded, sniffling with a smile as a cat rubbed against your ankle. You leaned down and picked up the fluffy animal and it nuzzled into your chest.
"What happened?" Kuroo started the conversation. Kenma knew he wasn't the best at these kinds of things but he was there for moral support.
"Uh, today was our one year anniversary. He said he wanted to tell me something, I thought maybe it was a job promotion or something exciting. He said he was breaking up with me. Told me that the last handful or so of months he hasn't been loyal because he met his soulmate. I should've trusted my gut when I thought something was wrong. He would come home late, stay out longer more often than not, I just never wanted to think that he was cheating. I never liked the thought of soulmates but he just made it worse, and- I'm sorry, I know you guys don't wanna hear this. I- I'm sorry." Your words got faster at the end as you realized you started rambling. Kuroo and Kenma's hearts seized at that statement. They had made so much progress with just being in your life, but now Hajime went and added fuel to the fire.
"Sweetheart, don't apologize. It's not your fault that you got hurt. It's his fault for hurting you when he knew better." You sniffled and instantly thought you were probably intruding on their space.
"I should probably go get a hotel or something, I'm sorry for barging in so late." You went to stand but Kuroo grabbed your hand.
"We have two spare rooms, you can use one for now." You stared at him in shock.
"Are you sure?"
"We're sure." You were shocked by Kenma's voice.
"But isn't three a crowd?" That's the saying, threes a crowd and you didn't feel to be any exception. But Kuroo gave you a soft smile and rubbed his thumb over your knuckles.
"Not with you."
"Thank you." Your voice broke under all the pressure from today.
"What do you say we watch some movies? Get your mind off of everything for a bit." You nodded, gratefully excepting Kenma's offer.
It didn't take long for you to fall asleep on the couch, your head falling onto Kenma's shoulder. He went bright red under the accidental touch.
"I want to ask what happened but I don't want them to feel uncomfortable." Kenma stiffly hummed at Tetsurou's thoughts. "I just want them to be okay eventually."
"Me too, maybe they'll tell us one day." Kuroo nodded in agreement and glanced over at your sleeping figure. You looked so peaceful and perfect, how could anyone be okay with hurting you?
——————
You had been staying with the two for a week and a half now, when you finally found an apartment for rent.
"I found a place." Both of them stopped what they were doing and had a silent conversation with their eyes.
"Before you make anything official, we had an idea."
"Kuroo had an idea." You giggled at Kenma's input.
"Well, I, yeah okay, but Kenma agreed to it. If you want, you can just move in here, before these past two weeks you were over here at least twice a week as is and we have the space, plus it would be cheaper and the same commute to work. If you're not comfortable with it, we completely understand, but I figured I'd put the offer on the table." You mulled it over and contemplated it, weighing your options.
"Sure." You don't know why you agreed, maybe because they started to grow on you. Maybe because you didn't realize the bond had strengthened. But you agreed. Kuroo ran over and pick you up in a hug, spinning you around. His heart beating faster at the sound of your giggles.
"Well then, start unpacking." You couldn't contain the smile on your face before bolting upstairs. You greeted the two cats that stayed in your room most of the time before getting to work.
——————
You woke up in Kuroo's arms with an arm draped over Kenma as he curled into your chest a little. Last night, the three of you had a sleepover in the living room. It's been two months since you moved in but waking up next to them? It scared you. Something deep down inside, it terrified you. To realize just how close and comfortable you'd gotten with your soulmates. The ones you swore off since you were merely a child. You wiggled out of Kuroo's grasp, allowing the two to roll into the other and cuddle before hiding in the bathroom for a minute to calm yourself. This wasn't happening. You were not falling for them. You couldn't let it happen. All it would do is hurt you. You had to step back from this for a minute. All you felt like you could do was run. Just like you did as a child. You didn't realize that your breathing got heavier as you sunk to the ground, knees curled to your chest. Your lungs were burning, fighting to get in air when you heard a knock on the door.
"Y/N? You okay in there? Y/N?" Kuroo was on the other side.
Stupid soulmate bond.
"Hey, I'm coming in, I hope you're decent." You didn't even register what he said until the door opened. "Hey, hey, hey, it's just me. Relax. Sweetheart, breathe. You're safe." You had gotten too comfortable, you weren't safe. "Look at me. You're having a panic attack, you need to try and breathe, c'mon do it with me." Kenma arrived in the doorway, worry apparent on his face. Kuroo reached out to grab your hand but you flinched away. Your eyes widened as did his, you hadn't flinched in years.
"Kuroo." Kenma's voice was soft and quiet before they swapped out. Kenma now sitting in front of you, mirroring how you sat. "L/N, can you look at me please?" You barely looked up, only going as high as his chin. "Nobody here is gonna hurt you, you're safe. You're home. Can you mimic my movements and do what I do?" You nodded and watched as he put his arms behind his head, like you do when you're laying back and don't have a pillow. With stiff, shaky movements, you did it. "Good job.. Now follow my breathing okay?" He enunciated his breathing and you did your best to follow along, messing up at times but ultimately falling back into his rhythm. It took a few minutes but eventually, you were placated and breathing easier. You sent him a curious look, not knowing how he helped that quickly. "I used to get them a lot during middle school and high school, it's gotten easier to manage since then though. Tets has been a big help for me since we were kids." He glanced back at his fiancé before speaking again. "Can we go back to the living room?" You silently nodded, already knowing you weren't going to like this conversation.
Once on the couch, you curled up in the corner with a pillow to your chest. Kenma sat next to you in the couch, a decent space away and Kuroo sat on the ground in front of you both.
"What happened sweetheart?" Your mouth suddenly felt like sandpaper.
"I- I've gotten too comfortable, and it's only going to get me hurt."
"Too comfortable.. with us?" You slowly nodded at Kuroo's question, watching as him and Kenma had a silent conversation. "Why would that get you hurt?" Tears welled in your eyes, you hadn't even told Iwaizumi why you hated the concept of soulmates and you knew him for two years before he left you for his own.
"You can talk to us, we're not gonna hurt you." Your head snapped towards Kenma at the sound of his voice.
"My moms second husband, he would abuse her. M-My dad died when I was barely even one, and she was one of the rare ones who got a second chance soulmate." Their eyes widened in shock. "At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. My mom would tell me stories of her and my father, but the soulmate bond wasn't enough for him and he.." Kenma nodded, encouraging you to keep talking. "Well my mom got a second chance, I started n-noticing things when I was about five. The bruises, the scars. But she stayed. Until she went to be with my dad. I was about nine at the time. At first, it was fine living with my stepdad I guess. Until he got a girlfriend who he claimed was his second chance soulmate. It was hell, so when I was twelve years old, I ran away and got put into the foster system. Every family I had until I aged out was broken, soulmates or not. I swore off soulmates when I was a kid, so as long as I can remember. When I got with Iwa, I thought I'd be safe but he left me for his soulmate. And now, instead of breaking the cycle, I'm falling into it again by falling for you both. It's not hard to know that in the end it's just gonna hurt me, and I can't handle that. I've gotten t-too comfortable." Kuroo and Kenma's heart broke. They finally knew why you hated soulmates.
"We wanted to talk to you since we first saw you."
"But you did?" Kuroo shook his head and swapped spots with you, somewhat. He stood up and in a swift motion, lifted you, placed you on his lap and sat in the corner of the couch. Something about it comforted you, even though every neuron in your brain was saying not to let them get too close.
"We didn't, we were in high school. We saw you at a game against Fukuroudani, we wanted to talk to you but you ran into Konoha's arms so Kenma talked me out of it. I wanted to talk to you that day and figured if it was meant to happen, we would see you again. All these years later, you moved next door. Guess it was fate, but maybe it was coincidence." You curled into his chest a little more, seeking some sort of comfort from him just being there.
"We can take whatever you want to do as slowly as you're comfortable with. We want to show you that we're not going to hurt you, at the very least not intentionally." Your eyes widened at Kenma's sentiment. After all this time, they were still willing to be patient. Even if it meant just being friends.
"Thank you." You slightly blushed as Kuroo placed a soft kiss on top of your head. There were no implications behind it, just a calming gesture.
——————
Through out the next three months, you grew closer to Kenma and Tetsurou. And as much as you hated it, your feelings grew too. You loved hanging out with them and spending as much time with them as possible. You wanted to tell them but you didn't know how, until you got a cheesy idea.
"Tets, Kenma, did you guys see my Instagram? I updated it!" Tetsurou looked at you precariously before launching for his phone. Kenma's was already in hand so he clicked on the app. It was deadly silent as they read the bio update.
'Sorry shortstack, you alright?' | 'I'm sorry about him.'
"I love you guys." Tetsurou dropped his phone and ran to you at full speed.
He picked you up by your waist, spinning you around as your harmonious laughter filled the air and their hearts. Once he set you down, he kept his hands firmly planted on your hips. Kenma finally processed what he read and came up behind you, wrapping his slender arms around your waist. Swiftly you leaned up and placed a kiss on the rooster headed man's lips. Your hands cupping his face to steady him while he looked as though he was in a trance before he leaned down for another kiss, both of you smiling into it. Then you turned to Kenma, your arms draped over his shoulders before you leaned in and gave him a kiss as well. He thought his heart was going to beat out of his chest and his face flushed a bright pink. He desperately wished his hair wasn't pulled back so he could hide the tint on his face.
"So does this mean the three of us are dating now?" You turned back to Tetsurou and nodded your head viciously.
Maybe three really isn't a crowd.
