pairing: bf!kuroo tetsurou x fem!reader
warning: hurt/comfort, swearing, argument, kuroo being a bit of an asshole
wc: 1.2k
genre: angst to fluff
summary: kuroo forgot about the anniversary reservation that the couple had set up for their 4 year anniversary. Y/n was hurt by it, but kuroo made up on the act of his doing.
Tumblr media
Kuroo always had a passion for volleyball. It was his pride, his ego, his priority, and his everything. However, he's was always coming home late, missing date nights, and even certain events. He never showed up on one after his volleyball career started to take off. As of today, it was the couples 4th anniversary. She was happy that Kuroo decided to take off the day early at 5, to which the reservation at the new fancy restaurant was at 7. Y/n decided to get there early to settle in on the menu first. To her surprised, it was 7:20 pm. He was still not there. She waited as people who looked so luxurious, and fancy staring at her with pitiful looks as if wondering why is a lonely women like Y/n sitting there. She felt embarrassed, at the fact that her 4 long year boyfriend didn't show up. "Excuse me?" Y/n calls out for the waiter. "Can I get the check?" She asked. "Of course, here you go." The waiter smile handing her the check, while Y/n payed and left.
Arriving home, she felt embarrassed. Unzipping the dress as it fell down to her knees. She grabbed a pair of shirts and pajama pants before heading to the bathroom, washing off the make up off. Y/n slowly walked down the stairs afterwards, meeting him in the hallway. "Where were you?" Y/n asked as she was barely near the brick of tears. "Tetsu... where were you?" She asked again, as Kuroo sighed and explained, "I was at work like always." He groaned in annoyance. "Did you forget that we had dinner reservations at 7?" Her eyebrows furrowed into anger. "Sorry that I missed the dinner, but listen. I was busy okay. You already know I'm busy." Kuroo continues. "That doesn't make up the chances of you skipping a special day for us!" She yelled as the anger raised up into the air. "I'm not doing this shit right now." Tetsuruo sighs. "You said that you'll be home by 5 to be able to go to dinner with me. But you lied. You lied Tetsu!" She cried, anger only slipping out of her mouth.
"It was just one mistaken missing. I'm sorry that I couldn't be able to go because I have a god damn fucking life. I'm sorry that I have to deal with practice every fucking day!" He yelled back. Frustration, anger, and nothing but annoyance filled his facials. "That doesn't mean anything Tetsu." She spoke on a softer tone. "I shouldn't even be apologizing. You should be great full enough that I spend my hard working money on you. I made sure there was food for you. I even made sure there was a roof for your dumbass to fucking live. I don't need to be going to every single fucking date or dinner reservations you set up!" He explained with venom. He kept ranting with so much anger and venom in his sense of tone. Until that certain little sob that slipped out of her mouth.
Kuroo paused from his words and looked up. Eyes widen to see tears that he cause on his lovers eyes. He took a step forward, only for her body to swift back. "Bab-" Y/n ran off to the shared bedroom before hearing his words. Silence was surrounding the atmosphere in the hallway. Kuroo fucked up. He was going isane at the moment. He was reviewing the words that broke his girlfriend's heart. He couldn't believe the fact that he broke the promise he made with her. Pulling out his phone to realize that it was June 16th. The day of their anniversary. The day they made it official as a couple. The day he promised to always be by her side and not hurt her. But, the day when he broke the promise and every bits of pieces in the relationship. Kuroo couldn't understand himself. He couldn't see why he didn't make the effort for the relationship. He just couldn't think a single thing to the reason why the situation is like this. Sighing to himself with guilt and regret building up, he finally made it to the shared bedroom. Opening the door to see his lover only hugging herself, fast asleep. He smiled for second, but it faded away, seeing the dried stripes of tears on her face.
Tumblr media
The next morning happened to come around. It was tense the next morning, but to Y/n's surprise. She saw Kuroo home instead of volleyball practice. "Good morning," Tetsuruo smiled from the kitchen as to preparing breakfast for the two. "Are you hungry?" He asked. "Yeah." She replied shortly. She didn't understand why he was home instead of at work. "Baby," Tetsuruo started. "Hmm?" She hummed, with a peice of bread in her mouth. "If you're wondering why I'm not at work is because... I took the whole week off. I'm really sorry about what I said to you last night. I know I can't be forgiven about it, but I'm sorry, really sorry about skipping the anniversary date. Things got caught up that I lost track of time, and it slipped out of my mind." His voice cracked thinking about the way he's been treating her. "Tetsu.." Y/n called out. "I know I'm not the best boyfriend, but trust me. I'll be better. I promise, and I won't break this promise. I'll treat you better, even though I know for a fact that I don't deserve you." He cried. Y/n stood up, rushing over to him.
"Tetsu... you may be busy, but I felt lonely. I missed my tetsu. I missed the way he would come home early and on time for dinner to have with me. Fun fact, I felt embarrassed when I went to our reservation for our 4 year anniversary. But... I miss the most was you. My kuroo Tetsuruo. The man I love." She complies with a smile cupping his cheeks. "Tetsu. I know that things can get out of hand, but maybe next time communicate with me. Next time, tell me if practice is going to take a while for you, and that you'll come home late. I don't wanna have the feeling of being worried about you, and wondering if you've eaten or not. I wanna know what's happening so I could keep update on you. I'll forgive you, however, the trust that I put on you has broken. And you're going to have to bring it back if you wanted things to be settled down and good for us. I love you, I really do, but the trust isn't there anymore." Y/n softly said as to removing her hand away from his cheek.
"I'll get it back, I promise. I'll be the better person in our relationship. I promise princess." He hugged her. She smiled, her arms wrapping around the man and nuzzled her nose into the crook of his neck. "Let me make up on the missing anniversary date." He suggested, "okay." She whispered.

let’s get angsty bc my cycle is late again and nO IM NOT PREGNANT SHADDUP-
-
Kuroo is known for being ridiculously focused.
When he’s in it, he’s fully into the thick of it, throwing himself into the responsibility of making his work the best it can be, the words and statistics being all he knows for those many hours he sits, tapping his fingers on the laptop on his desk.
Nothing else can weasel its way into his focus when he’s working on something. 9 times out of 10, he’s immune to the interruptions of the outside world.
But nothing snaps him out of a focus more than your pretty voice. Especially if it’s in distress.
But he’s not perfect.
“Tetsuro?”
“What’s up, princess?” He hums, barely looking up from his laptop. He merely pushes the glasses on his nose up and continues to type. He hears you sigh softly and shift on your feet.
“Todays just… been rough,” you explain, and finally Tetsuro pauses to look at you. “Do you… do you think you could come and cuddle? I know you’re busy but… but I really need you.”
Tetsuro smiles and nods understanding, “yeah baby. Just let me wrap up this paragraph or two and I’ll come right down. Make sure you eat something okay? Don’t wait for me.”
You smile hopefully and nod, slipping out of his study to your room, letting Tetsuro right back to his work. He makes a mental note of the time before cracking his neck and diving right back in.
One sentence turns to a paragraph. Then, one paragraph turns to two. Two to three. Three eventually becomes two pages and Tetsuro is on a writing high that he can’t stop; he’s smiling at his own work, eagerly gnawing his lip and beyond excited to finally wrap this shit up, and-
He’s interrupted by a buzzing on his desk.
Annoyed, he tries to pause it to stop, but when he can’t, he groans in frustration before picking up his phone.
22:30 : Medicine.
Fuck.
It isn’t until his medicine alarm goes off that he realizes how late it’s gotten. It’s been four hours since you came in.
When he snoozes his alarm, there’s a text from you that shatters his heart: gn i guess
Immediately, Tetsuro feels sick to his stomach. He doesn’t even bother shutting off the lights and saving the documents on his computer before he flies down the stairs and into the room, chest heaving and breath caught in his throat when he sees the heatable bear encased in your arms, light from the tv casting a shadow on your features. He tries so hard to keep his breathing quiet, he knows he let you go to bed alone, cold and in your own head waiting for his stupid ass to come down and be with you.
He swallows thickly before he shuffles over to you, plopping on the edge of the bed and trying to keep you comfortable. He doesn’t want to wake you, not when he’s done so much already.
“I’m sorry, angel,” he whispers, thumb gently smoothing over your temple. You whimper and angle your head into the warmth of his hand. “Fuck, I’m so sorry…”
Sometimes, when Tetsuro talks to you in your sleep, you give him a smile, a little quirk of the lips at the tone, and he takes it as a sign that you’re there with him and you can feel his love even if you’re not conscious to witness it.
Tonight, though, your brows furrow. Your throat releases a meager noise of distress and he sinks his teeth into his lip; even as you welcome his touch, it’s as if his words still distress you, and you’re hurt. Your nose lets out small, huffy breaths, and you crush the bear tighter to your chest.
He lets his head down in defeat before kissing your head one more time before standing up; he shuffles like a zombie up back into the small study and shutting everything down: slamming his laptop shut, snatching the cold cup of tea and aggressively flicking off the lights to go back and join you in bed.
He plants the tea on his nightstand before curling up next to you under the covers, careful to keep his cold feet away from you. He tugs you softly to his chest wordlessly and buries his head against your neck, arms heavy and caging to keep you against him.
He wishes you could feel the way he’s blinking back his frustrated, remorseful tears. He wishes you could’ve had your last awoken moments be filled with cuddles and giggles and stolen kisses and playful bites.
But no. Instead, you needed him, you came and asked for him, and he couldn’t stop himself for one damn hour to be with you.
“I’m so sorry, babydoll.”

{lovesick - kuroo t.}
“I pictured you with other girls in love… then threw up on the street.”
gn!reader
warnings: fluff!!! minor angst but don’t worry it’s resolved very quick!!! also, despite the lyric I’m using, there’s no throwing up in this fic, just mentions of it/feeling nauseous. I think I debated scrapping this this like 3 times. tried a new writing style (intentional tense changes) lmk what you think!!
...I might actually write for this specific lyric for other characters too, I have a lot of pent up feelings about it clearly...
Tumblr media
there comes a point in your relationship with kuroo tetsurou that makes you question everything.
that point, unfortunately, came in your last year of high school when he stared at you a little too intently while you were laughing at one of his stupid jokes. one he’s told many times over the years, but still always managed to get you.
he grinned at you as you calmed down and you hated the way your heart thumped at the lingering amusement and fondness in his eyes.
you hated the way you were both silent after, eyes locked and no words spoken.
you hated the way his expression turned soft as if he had just had come to a satisfying realization. you knew what that meant because you were sure yours was identical.
in that moment, you hated that you had both finally accepted that maybe, just maybe, there was more to your friendship.
because it meant you had even more to lose.
cut to your second year of university. your relationship hadn't really progressed any further than the in between of friends and more.
but that in itself was a step forward because it meant your interactions were had with the unspoken agreement that you would end up together.
you didn't go to the same school anymore- you stayed in tokyo for university and he moved away for his program.
you still saw each other often enough, though, when he would visit home either during free weekends or for holidays.
kenma also stayed in tokyo, at a different university, but he was closer than his best friend that’s for sure. most friday nights were spent with him, either on call with kuroo or physically with him when he visited as kenma played video games.
everything was the same but everything was different.
kenma commented on how gross kuroo’s obvious displays of affection for you were, something he never had to do over the years.
and you'd just ignore him, obviously, but get a little giddy inside that kuroo was being so open with his fond stares and hands that were always touching you somehow.
with that confirmation that maybe you wouldn't lose him, you grew to love how his expressions turned soft for you.
you loved how your heart would beat just a bit faster (often in time with his, as you found out when he would grab your hand and place it over his chest so you could feel his) when you saw each other after a while.
you loved that you were falling in love with him, and accepted the fact that maybe you always were.
along with your excitement that one day kuroo would be yours, there was an underlying fear that you were taking too long with this game you were playing. dancing around each other, teasing, flirting- only with each other, it never extended to other people. but still...
what if he gets bored and finds someone else? what if while he’s away for school, you drift apart? the higher you go with your education, the busier you’re bound to be… what if he stops coming to visit and the dynamic you have now falls apart?
all these thoughts bubble over and make themselves known on a night out a few weeks later.
kuroo’s home again, for a week this time, and you decide to get a group of people together at a club. included are bokuto and akaashi, kenma opting to pass for his games, and one of your friends from high school.
you’re slightly drunk, giggling with her about one thing or another when the topic of conversation turns to him. she looks over at him, dancing with bokuto, as akaashi watches them from the sidelines, exasperated.
“you’re pretty good friends with kuroo, right?” she asks.
a dopey grin makes its way onto your face at the mention of his name (against your will) and you nod.
“well get this- my friend goes to the same university as him, they have a class together, and she’s thinking of asking him out after the break.”
your face falls and you’re sucked into a state of panic.
realistically, you have nothing to worry about. if earlier that day was any indication of how kuroo still felt about you, he would turn this girl down. his warm hands on your cheeks as he pressed kisses to your forehead in greeting at the train station. his hand in yours when you walked from the car to your apartment where he’s staying for the week.
(the logical thing to do here would be to tell her that you and kuroo are unofficially a thing, so he's kind of off limits, but you're too tipsy for logic at this point.)
"do you think he's looking for anything right now?"
your friend tries to get your attention, but you can't hear her. you stare at him from across the room and pictures of him cuddled up with this stranger flash through your mind, kissing her how you've always wished he'd kiss you, being pushed to the sidelines in his life as he moves on-
before she can call out to you again, you’re already dashing to the washroom, nausea settling into your stomach at the thought of him possibly falling in love with someone else. you haven’t had enough alcohol to make you sick, which makes it all worse. this feeling is here because you're in love. and want him to be yours. and he might be ripped away from you.
some might call it a newly developed strain of lovesickness.
you’re unaware that he follows you after seeing you dash in between him and bokuto.
you lock yourself in the large stall and crouch to the ground, head in your hands. making an attempt to steady your breathing, you inhale deeply and exhale slowly.
a knock on your stall can be heard. "y/n? are you in here?"
"yeah." your voice is quiet, but thankfully the music has faded to a dull thumping so he's able to hear it.
"can I come in?"
you don't know how to answer that, but you ponder on it for a second too long, apparently, because now he's stepping onto the toilet seat of the next stall over and climbing over into yours.
you look up at him pitifully and he sighs. "what's up, buttercup?"
there's no use waiting any longer. you tug on his sleeve and he moves closer, wrapping an arm around you. "my friend's friend wants to ask you out after the break and I felt sick just thinking about it."
you don't look at him when you say it, but you can hear the barely contained joy in his voice at your confession. "yeah? you don't want me to date anyone else? you finally staking your claim on me?"
he pulls you closer to him when you nod. "good. I was getting worried I'd have to be the one to give in first."
you slap his arm and he laughs. "tetsurou," you say.
"hmm?"
"I'm not going to be the one to ask you officially, that's on you."
"that's fine, I was going to anyway. I've been waiting a long time for this, baby."
you finally look up at him. "yeah?"
he grins down at you and the look in his eyes has once again gone completely soft, just for you. "oh yeah."
he shifts a bit until you're both facing each other on the (probably dirty) bathroom floor of a tiny club in tokyo and asks the question you've been yearning to hear since that day in your last year of high school.
"y/n, will you do me the honour of officially being mine?"
"well obviously," you say and finally kiss him.
Tumblr media
BONUS:
kuroo's last day at your apartment came far too quickly.
but the days after your confession were the best days you've ever spent with him. neither of you wanted to say goodbye, conversations were had about doing semi-long distance and you were both more than willing.
that didn't stop you from trying to get him to stay in your bed a bit longer.
"y/n, come on, I have to get ready to go to the train station," he laughed as you clung to him.
"no." was your only response, and you wrapped around him even tighter. he was sitting on the edge of your bed, trying to put a shirt on, but your arms were locked around his torso.
"baby, please, I promise if you let me get up and dressed at the very least I'll come back and we can cuddle a bit longer.
he felt you smile a bit into his skin at the use of the pet name. he had been experimenting with them throughout the week and he had concluded based on your reactions to them that baby always made you smile and look away, sweetheart made you nuzzle into him and whine, and the one time he called you gorgeous you shivered and almost dropped a glass of water out of excitement. of course there were others that had good reactions, so he had a full arsenal of names to call you now.
"hmmm, but tetsurou, we both know that you could have easily gotten me off of you by now if that's what you really wanted,"
however nothing compared to how he absolutely melted into you whenever you said his name like that, in that tone.
he turned and pounced on you, reveling in your giggly shrieks as he nibbled on your neck. your arms wrapped around his bare shoulders.
"if I'm late it's going to be your fault, sweetheart, and I will make you regret it."
"so menacing, I'm terrified- NO!" you were cut off by a new string of laughter and pleading for him to stop as his hands attacked your sides.
if being late meant more time to hear your laugh and feel your skin, maybe kuroo would just give in and catch the 5 o'clock train instead.

you always believed that the worst feeling someone could experience, was betrayal.
so when you entered the party just to see your boyfriends hands wrapped around another girls waist and both their lips interlocked with each other, sloppily kissing, time stopped for you.
you felt dizzy. a familiar yet sickening feeling began to make itself at home in your stomach and your breathing became more erratic. the feeling of dread and nausea overtook you.
and the moment his eyes inevitably met your teary ones, time stopped for him too.
you couldn't help but wonder how long it would take for you to forgive him; how long you would be able to resist running back to him. just like last time you caught him.

You're just trying to get back to your room.
It's misty outside for the first time in days, and your hair is doing weird things because you just woke up, and it's laundry day, so you're wearing the best combination you could find of strangely-patterned sweats and a sports bra as a shirt.
And you're doing your laundry, so you have to go all the way downstairs and back up again. Back up again, however, seems to have been roadblocked by a wall of leggy, perfectly unmade-made-up girls who are all coming back at nine in the morning from someplace unknown and mystical, smelling of coconut body spray.
"Excuse me," you try, your voice maybe too quiet as you attempt to sound less than annoyed. A few of them move out of the way, and you walk past gratefully, only to be stopped short as the tallest, coconuttiest, perfectest one rocks back right into your path, bubbling over giggling like celebratory champagne. You don't have to look to know who it is that made her laugh like that, where she's coming back from.
You stand, staring, for a moment, involuntarily comparing her side profile to your own, the way her hair is piled up in a messy bun girls on Wattpad in 2012 would envy. She doesn't even notice you, still addressing a rapt audience, and you feel much, much smaller than you should.
Blessedly, someone says her name, an abbreviated, fond version of it, and she glances at you and moves out of the way. You mutter "thanks," and sidle through, though there's not enough space in the tight hallway to avoid bumping your knee into someone else.
"Sorry," Kuroo says, and despite how hard you’ve been trying not to look at him, you just have to.
Your eyes scrape over his stupid high school hoodie, his growing stubble, his piercing eyes. His hair’s a mess and your chest grows tight imagining why. There's something awful growing in there, vines you can feel growing offshoots that you cannot let burst out.
Part of you is indignant, insisting that you shouldn’t feel like a mouse in the presence of all these popular people, that you have self worth beyond cowering beside the queen bee. The rest of you shivers, remembering that you have every reason to feel guilty around her, that you’re the other woman.
You try not to think about how the reaction is more due to remembering the night you fucked her boyfriend than anything.
You hadn’t carried on any lascivious, secretive affair with Kuroo. It had been a one-night stand before they’d gotten together. The night they’d gotten together.
You’d found yourselves in the same social circle after the frantic rush to make friends during the first week of university, and he was the handsomest thing you’d ever seen, just between man and boy. You’d pushed—hard—to get closer to him, signed up for the things he liked, didn’t make too much fun of his awful chemistry puns or taste in bands. You’d lingered in his life, been the last one in his room, late at night, and his roommates weren’t coming back.
You’d woken up, sore and a little embarrassed (you were pretty sure they couldn’t build walls thick enough) but as weightless and joyful as the dawn. He was still dead to the world, so you’d climbed out of bed and hustled back to your room with the full intention of texting him later in the day.
Mere hours later, the news had come through like wildfire.
You’re pretty sure they’re not official, that boyfriend and girlfriend are titles only used in your head, but everyone knows they are capital T Together.
You feel silly whenever you watch him out your window, back arched and eyes narrowed as he hits a perfect spike playing volleyball in the green. You were the one who left before he woke up; you who had promised him a one-night-stand.
Still, something in you screams that he was yours first.
He's looking at you like maybe you'll respond, spit out a joke, pretend like you haven't lost your mind jumping into something you didn’t understand. You don’t stay long enough to read his face; you duck your head and go.
He waves a half-assed wave at your back. You have eyes in the back of your head, it seems, because you can’t help but wave back.

Atsumu x Reader, Oikawa x Reader, Kuroo x Reader
notes: best friend falls hard, knowing all too well it’ll never work, but the heart wants what it wants.
Angst
Atsumu:
his laugh echoed again through the gym, full and magnificent, filled with childish glee as his eyes crinkled in the corner, head cocked to the side as he listened for more, eyes focused. the only wish in your heart at that moment is that it was you over there.
now, it would be ridiculous to be territorial over his time, toxic even, seeming as you’ve not talked a whole lot, and were just friends. Atsumu often leaving mid-conversation to find his friends. but you would also be lying if you were to deny that you... loved him.
you loved that abrupt cheer he lets out after a particularly good set, or the tiny glares he throws at his brother when Osamu points out his shoe’s untied. the way he chattered along, mouth half full, or when his eyes focused, perfecting his technique again and again. so why?
“they’re talking about cake pops” Osamu filled you in, leaning against the wall behind you, his eyes trained on your face, watching as the smile you plastered on didn’t actually reach your eyes.
“ah, I see that’s why he’s so.... engaged.” you murmured, watching as he placed an arm around them, joining in with them to laugh along too. you hated it, the bubbling, boiling feeling in your core, making you want to vomit, and scream and cry. the worst part knowing that it’s absolutely ridiculous.
“it’s for the best, he’s an idiot anyway, and I don’t want you to stop showing up for mario kart because the bozo with fewer brain cells ran ya off” Osamu added, and you smiled, aware he was trying desperately to comfort you.
ridiculous. but that’s never stopped feelings before.
Oikawa:
again, staring at your phone yet again, as a single text message popped on the screen, your homemade dinner growing cold. tonight was supposed to be the night. where you’d put in the effort. hoping just once he’d hold your hand during the movie, instead of screeching that your hands were ice cubes.
“hey there, I’m actually not coming to movie night, sorry. I got asked on date by ‘them’, wish me luck, this man is about to turn on the charm”
you stared at the screen, typing so many different responses, before settling for a simple thumbs up, throwing your phone to the other, vacant, side of the couch. it shouldn’t matter to you. best friends. you don’t mind... you... shouldn’t mind.
but all those little things add up, the one time he took off volleyball on a thursday night to plan to come over, he was bringing the ice cream, you were serving the snacks. all ruined cause of one text. You should be happy for him, but the next thing you know, tears are dripping onto the couch.
reaching over to the phone you shoot off a text to Iwa too, letting him know not to bother and to come over to take any food if he wanted to. the message left on read soon, as you set it back down as so much as texting felt exhausting.
now, maybe it all could’ve been avoided, but even so. even tho he hurts you. there’s no way you can be mad. for you’ve waited now too long to speak up, nodding along as he rambled about their gorgeous eyes. it would’ve been easy to simple ask, but then again. is anything regarding Oikawa ever simple?
so you sat there, tv playing, no ice cream to cry with. and nobody to blame.
Kuroo:
now, you should’ve expected it given his natural charm, soft eyes and boyish smile. expected him to sweep someone off their feet, and watch as he drapes his jacket over their arms, his conversation constantly filled with only them. no longer walking you home, as you shiver against the wind, tears freezing on your skin.
now, you’d never blame Kuroo, you should’ve been guarding your daydreams, keeping them grounded, even when he leaned in to check your homework over your shoulder during study nights, the edges of his hair tickling your face.
how he’d constantly ask you to the café, complaining that there was never any blueberry muffins left when he got there. your daydreams running wild as you’d gotten home, baking some, more and more, as you’d constantly gift them to him.
He had to admit, you were one of his best friends. but it stopped there, and you knew, but hearts retaliate in their own ways. breaking you as their ripped to shreds. over what? a polyester jacket. which brought you to now
walking the quiet streets, tears frozen to your face as you continue, phone left on do-not-disturb, as you hoped maybe it would get you out of your own head. walking along the roads, maybe to find Kuroo, maybe to simply appreciate the weather, or to cry where nobody could hear you. where your heart could tear you apart.
your feet finding their way to the café, walking through the door, as the heat stopped your shivering. looking up, growing instantly nauseous, as your heart stabbed you from the inside out, dying a little itself. the sight of Kuroo, feeding your muffins to his... special person. at your special table
so... maybe you were taking it personally, but, you never knew he found you so... replaceable.

Hi! I am in love with your Good Enough post for the Haikyuu!! boys. It was so sweet and exactly what I needed to read. I adore fluffy things like that. Not a lot of authors stick to SFW and I want to thank you for sticking to that. As someone who has a foot on both sides of that line, I know how easy it is to fall. I think we have a tendency to forget that intimacy can be nonsexual as well. So, go you!
Anyhow, before I get on another tangent… I would like a part 2 of Good Enough. With Iwaizumi, Kuroo, Kita, Akaashi, Daichi and Makki? (Part 1 had 6 so I chose 6 as well.) Please and thank you in advance if you take my request!
— Good Enough (Volume II)
๑ Requested by @exaltedvalkyrie
๑ Iwaizumi Hajime, Kuroo Tetsurou, Kita Shinsuke, Akaashi Keiji, Daichi Sawamura, Hanamaki Takehiro (Haikyuu)
๑ Contains: Use of They/Them pronouns (they weren't specified and I like making things as inclusive as possible, I hope that's okay!); Angst with a happy ending (or at least okay ending); Hurt/Comfort
๑ Quick Note: Thank you so much for requesting and thank you for all the kind words! All of it really made my morning!! <3
– Editing Note: Akaashi's is a bit different! Nothing scary, it is just a bit different from the other ones. I also didn't know how to end it, so the ending is kind of abrupt. Sorry!
– Editing Note (6/12/22): I am so, so, unbelievably sorry this is so late!! This last semester was a lot busier than I anticipated and I am so sorry for the months-long wait. I hope you enjoy the finished product.

Iwaizumi Hajime
Hajime's eyebrows furrowed as he looked at you.
Your teeth were caught on the inside of your bottom lip and your eyes were focused straight ahead, even though Hajime could see you weren't processing anything that was going on around you. Your teeth moved their position from the inside of your mouth to fully biting into the outside of your lip. Hajime watched as you sat there looking troubled before you opened your mouth.
"Iwa, I think... I think we should break up."
Iwaizumi Hajime frowned. He frowned at the way your words shook, he frowned at the idea that you wanted to leave him, and he frowned at you using a nickname that conveyed you weren't as close as you were. Aside from Oikawa, and at this point in Iwaizumi's life, a select few others, 'Iwa-chan' was reserved for people just barely friendly enough to get to a first name basis with him. The fact that you didn't call him Hajime, but instead something still friendly enough hurt him.
"Why?" He asked, careful to not let his voice have a harsh edge. He knew the situation was sensitive and that you were likely sensitive in this moment as well. "Why do you think that?"
"It's just..." You shrugged, looking anywhere but him. "I know you could do better."
Iwaizumi's frown grew and his eyebrows drew closer together. He couldn't understand where you got that idea. "What do you mean?" He asked, carefully turning your head to face him. "How could I possibly do better when I have you? If anything, you're too good for me."
At his admission, you let out a shaky breath. "What?" You hiccuped.
"You're the one that deserves better." He repeated. "I work odd hours that normally run late, I'm not always in the best mood and my temper's always been short." Iwaizumi grabbed your hands in his, gently playing with your fingers. "None of that ever seems to bother you, though. You're always here for me and putting up with me. You're my world, (Y/N). I don't want to let you go, but if you really want to leave, I don't want to make you miserable and force you to stay."
The dam officially broke as a sob finally escaped you. You threw your body into his. "I'm sorry, Hajime! I don't wanna leave you, I promise!"
Hajime pulled you closer into him, softly petting your head. "I've got you, baby." He whispered, kissing the top of your head. "I love you so much. If you ever start getting thoughts like that again, let me know, yeah?"
You nodded against him. "I love you too, Hajime."
Kuroo Tetsurou
"Honey, I'm home!" Kuroo announced as he entered your shared apartment, waiting to hear your sweet little laugh. You both knew Kuroo saying that was cheesy and ridiculous, but it got you every time. This time, however, was different. Instead of an amused snort passing through your nose, or a laugh ringing throughout the room, Tetsurou was met with silence.
He looked to the side of the door and frowned. Your shoes were here, but you weren't. The man began to look around, starting with your shared bedroom.
Walking down the hallway and opening the door, he discovered that he was right. There you were, sitting in the middle of your bed with your legs crossed and your palms over your eyes. He couldn't stand seeing you like this.
"Baby?" Your head lifted and your eyes met his. Tetsurou looked at you with eyes full of concern. Your eyes were red and your face was puffy. To him, it was obvious that you had been crying, but he wouldn't be surprised if you tried to blame it on the previous position of your hands.
"Hey, Kuroo." You smiled at him, but it was forced and tired, your eyes were full of sympathy and love. He was so confused.
He sat himself next to you. "What's wrong?"
You heaved a sigh, leaning your head on his shoulder. "I think..." The hesitance and exhaustion in your voice was audible. "I think we should break up."
"Why?" He asks, brows furrowed and looking down at you.
"I just," you sighed. "I just feel like it might be the right way to go. I just feel like I don't fit anymore."
"How could you not fit, (Y/N)?" You just shrugged, letting silence fill the space around you. Tetsurou pulled you into his lap, petting your head with the whole of his palm. The vacant look in your eyes and your dead weight was unsettling. "What they might say or think doesn't matter, (Y/N)." He wasn't sure if your thoughts were caused by others or if they were all your own, but he didn't want to take the risk. "You are one of the most important people in my life and I hate whenever you're not with me. I hate whenever I have to go somewhere for work and can't take you with me, but love having you be the first person I see when I walk in the door or when I wake up in the morning, and I love being able to show you off."
A sniffle escaped you and you moved to pull him into you in turn. "I hope you –" a hiccup interrupted you, "I hope you know how proud of you I am..."
Even though you didn't explain it, Tetsurou knew that the two of you would be okay. The man melted into you, kissing the top of your head before falling onto his back. "I'm proud of you too, (Y/N)."
Kita Shinsuke
Shinsuke stretched his back out, looking around at all the work he'd managed to do.
To Kita, everything was going according to plan. He woke up earlier than usual in hopes to have all of his chores for the day done before you woke up. Shinsuke was determined to spend the day with you. Life had been busy, and unfortunately, rather unkind to you lately, so, while you finally managed a day off, Kita made it his mission to take care of you.
Going inside, Shinsuke saw that you were already up, the universe seemed like it didn't want you to have breakfast in bed. You were sitting at the kitchen table, head in your hands and your shoulders slumped inwards on yourself. Shinsuke, being the sweet and doting man he is, immediately went into panic mode.
There was a small tremble in your shoulders that told him you were crying and any joke he could have made about you being sleepy died in his throat.
"Darling?" You pulled your head up in slight shock. It seemed you weren't expecting him inside yet. "What's wrong?" He asked as he made his way over you. He was worried - you were never this distressed so early in the morning.
The corners of your mouth pulled further down into a frown and you looked down again. "Just thinking."
Your dismissive answer prompted a semi-amused huff to leave his nose. "About?" Shin asked, hoping to make you smile a little.
"About how I'm not good enough." The words were said in a way that conveyed you were bored, but he knew you. You were fed up with the thoughts and you were tired. Shinsuke couldn't tell if you believed his words or not, however, they still left your lips and as much as you were trying to fight them, he saw the way your eyes glossed over. His heart threatened to break.
He picked you up into his arms, taking your seat on the chair and putting you into his lap. "Why do you think that, dear?" His voice was soft, coaxing you into answering him, or at least accepting the comfort he was offering.
He felt you shrug against his chest. "I've just been so busy and tired lately." You admitted flatly. "And then I come home, and here you are; the sweetest thing in the universe, taking care of me when you need the care more than I do. You're just incredible, Shinsuke, and I feel as though I can't compare. You just treat me so well, and I'm scared you'll grow to resent me."
Shinsuke's heart officially broke a little once he heard your voice's pitch rise and crack with the anguish you were bottling up. "(Y/N), darling, no." He attempted to soothe. "I could never, ever resent you, darling. You are the best thing that has ever happened to me, and even when you don't need help taking care of yourself, I will be here, helping as much as you need me to."
Warmth and a hint of optimism bloomed in his chest as you squeezed yourself further into him, letting your usual habit take place. Kita loved the way you curled into him when he had you on his lap, knowing it was a subconscious thing you did, reveling in the safe feeling it gave you. "I love you, Shin." You squeaked out.
"I love you too, (Y/N)." He took one of his hands from your back to coax your head up. The smile he pulled onto his lips widened a little when he saw the way your pupils dilated when you saw him. "Now, because you have the day off and I finished all of my usual chores, you and I are going to do nothing but relax today. But first, breakfast. What sounds good, my love?"
Akaashi Keiji
Though it was something Keiji loathed to admit, he occasionally felt low and overshadowed by those around him. It was never their fault, and Akaashi knew that it was never intentional or done with ill intent. It simply was what it was.
When Akaashi Keiji saw the look on your face, he immediately recognized all the signs. Lucky for Keiji, another skill he's gained over the years is cheering people up. One of his favorite things in Keiji's life was you and your smile, and he wanted to keep both of those things alive and well.
"Welcome back, sweetheart." He smiles gently at you, putting his work aside on the couch cushion next to where he was sitting and holding his arms open. As soon as your shoes were off, you almost immediately fell into his lap. His own tension left as he felt yours practically melt away. He still felt tension built up in your shoulders, but that was okay. He was going to help you get rid of it.
You were silent, breathing Keiji in. He cradled your head gently, hoping his heartbeat could help soothe you. His thumb carefully moved in slow, wide circles over your head and the occasional kiss was pressed into your hair.
"I love you so much, (Y/N), and I'm so happy you're home." There wasn't a response, but Keiji didn't worry about it. You needed the praise and reassurance, and he needed to take care of you. "I know how busy you've been lately, but I am so proud of you. I hope you know just how grateful I am for you and all of your hard work, (Y/N). You mean so much to me, baby."
The last bit of tension in your shoulders began to lift. Akaashi knew he accomplished what he needed to.
Daichi Sawamura
"Daichi, I'm enough for you, right?"
Daichi shifted is gaze over to you, confusion splayed over his face. "Of course you are." He couldn't help the short, disbelieving laugh that left him. "Why?" The amusement that was previously in his voice was gone, replaced by concern.
You lamely shrugged, looking over at him with bashfulness in your smile. "I don't know." You answer with a shrug, your eyes looking wistful. "I just remember when we got together in high school. You were so incredible to me." You let yourself lean into him on the couch.
Daichi remembers back then. He thought the world of you, and you looked at him as though he hung the stars in the sky. Suga often joked about how nauseatingly sweet you two were and Daichi always believed it. "I loved you then, and I love you now, too."
You snorted, a smile gracing your face. "Yeah," you trailed off before continuing. "I always wondered how I got so lucky. I didn't think I deserved you. Sometimes it's still hard to believe."
Daichi sent you a smile, though it was tinted with sadness. Daichi gave your hand a quick squeeze. "I think the same thing about you, but you mean so much to me, (Y/N)." He pressed a kiss to the side of your head and you leaned further into him.
Hanamaki Takehiro
"Hey, sunshine!" Makki greeted you, his smile as bright as the nickname he gave you.
You looked over at him from your spot on the couch and the smile you tried to give him didn't even reach halfway to your eyes. "Hey, Hana."
You sounded like you were on the verge of tears and Makki went into "cheer up" mode. He moved in front of you, crouching down to meet your eye level. "What's wrong?"
Your bottom lip wobbled and you sniffled, despite tears not even coming to your eyes yet. "Am I– Am I good enough for you?" Makki nearly flinched back when he heard the question. "I try so hard to take care of us, and I'm so scared I'm failing."
His arms circled around you as you draped yourself over him, clutching his hoodie in your hands as you cried. The guilt he felt at your words was overwhelming. The job market wasn't working in his favor and you had taken on most of the financial stability.
"(Y/N), no." He frowned. "You're not failing, love. You're doing so well, (Y/N). I am so sorry if I've made you feel that way." Makki tensed at the feeling of your body shaking against his. "I'm trying to get a job, I am, I promise. I'll pull more weight around here, hell, I'll be the perfect house husband until I get a job–"
A small beacon of relief shot through him at the small, sob muffled laugh that left you. "You already are." Your cried were turning into congested giggles. "How I'm feeling isn't your fault, Makki. Life's just hard right now."
"I know." He frowned again, kissing the crown of your head. "I'm gonna start checking in more, baby. There's gonna be less weight on you. I love you so much."
"I love you too."

“Not me, not Yaku, YOU.” angst, kuroken love triangle
~
“I know. It sucks. I know.”
Yaku, despite all his outbursts of fatherly-scolding, is quite the paternal shoulder to lean on as well. He understands all too well the agony of pining over a friend that you’ve been suffering through, and it always feels good to talk it out with him. You may not be the closest to him out of all the other members of the Nekoma team, but he’s always been good to you.
Your second-best friend, Kenma, looks up from his game console, his brows slightly furrowed. “Wait, what?” he asks, picking up on pieces of your whispered conversation. You didn’t know he’d been listening. “Why haven’t I heard about this? Who’s playing you like that, Y/n?”
You take one look at him, and though you love your best friend dearly, something in your heart just snaps.
“Oh, I don’t know, Kenma. Just my really good platonic pal who has been such a good friend to me lately, who sends me pics of his outfits so I can help him decide what looks best, and buys me ice cream when I’m feeling sad. My super ‘just-a-friend-since-middle-school,’ who comes over for movie nights and tells me about his college plans, and jokes with my dad. The jerk who lets me borrow his umbrella when I forget one,” you see the clear realization rolling across his features as you continue to rattle off the ways Kuroo has had your heart in his grip for the past god-knows-how-many years. “The guy who throws balled-up doodles he’s made of me in class just to make me laugh and lets me be the only person he cries in front of. ALL while telling me how crazy he is about YOU.”
An entirely different kind of realization hits Kenma like a slap across the face, his eyes growing uncharacteristically large. You have half a mind to regret betraying Kuroo’s trust, and you know Kenma shouldn’t find out like this, but honestly, you just can’t take it anymore. You’re sick of cancelled plans and last-minute additions to your one-on-one hangouts. You’re sick of thinking maybe there’s something more, when the direction of Kuroo’s heart is so clearly set on your other best friend.
“Y/n...” Yaku says softly. Kenma is speechless.
“Nevermind,” you mutter, slinging your backpack over your shoulder as you rise, embarrassed and angry. You almost miss the uncontrollable reddening of Kenma’s cheeks as you head for the door.
“Y/n, wait!” Kenma calls after you, finally coming to his senses, but you’ve already made up your mind, and don’t look back as warm tears start to fall down your cheeks.

HAIKYUU BOYS WHEN THEY THROW THEIR WEDDING RING
Tumblr media
ft. bokuto; suna; atsumu: kuroo; ushijima
a/n: the fact that i posted this exact prompt on my deleted blog but i don't remember it anymore—
jjk version
Tumblr media
it was no secret that BOKUTO sometimes had problems controlling his emotions. he wasn't necessarily as affected by them as he was in high school, but there were enough moments that made him feel ashamed when he thought about them; just like he did right now. he was sobbing violently, his arms pressing you as close to you as ohysically possible. he wailed apologies, only stopping to take a breath every once in a while. he snapped out of his anger the moment the ring left his hand, but he was afraid that the damage couldn't be undone. he could only beg, proclaiming his love for you over and over, even if he knew that his behaviour just disproved his claims.
arguing with SUNA was tiresome. it was like he never even cared, not being attentive and only brushing you off. he never thought about the impact of his words once he did answer you, trying to get you off his back as soon as possible and with any means necessary. but even he understood when he went too far. he realized it when you took a deep breath, muttering something that he could not understand and turned around, disappearing into the bedroom only to come out a few minutes later with a bag over your shoulder, not even sparing him a glance as you rushed out the door. he clenched his jaw, picking the ring up and clenching his fist, staring out the window with a heavy chest.
ATSUMU was a prideful and confident person, he hated being confronted with his faults. he never really reacted well afterwards, either snickering a comment back or just waving the criticism off. no one was safe from this side of him, not even you. but he wasn't an idiot either. he saw the way your face fell when his ring landed on the floor, how you were shaking as you went and picked it up, only to retreat into the bedroom silently. he stayed still, not even daring to move an inch, only looking at the place you stood just a second ago. how did he let it go this far?
KUROO hated arguing and the yelling that came with it. he hated the irrational things he says during them, how every sense of reason is being thrown into the wind just to get to you because of his pride. and right after he threw his wedding ring across the room and stormed out, slamming the door behind him, he broke down, hugging his knees as he cried. he didn't know what came over him, he didn't know why he would ever think that what he did was okay but how could he face you after what he had done?
it was rare that arguments with USHIJIMA got so heated. you barely ended up shouting at each other, much less underline your words with some kind of big gestures. so it was even a bigger shock when he raised his voice at you, fiddling with the ring on his finger until throwing it away with some accusatory yell. you were too shocked to even say anything, only extending your arms in front of you to protect yourself as you stared at him with big eyes. he wanted to step closer, he wanted to hug you, he wanted to fall to his knees and beg for forgiveness; anything so that you wouldn't look so afraid of him anymore.

SLEEPING ON THE COUCH AFTER AN ARGUMENT
Ft.: Kuroo Tetsurou, Akaashi Keiji
Angst but with fluff at the end. Just my boys kuroo and Akaashi and sleeping on the couch after an argument. Reblogs + interactions are highly appreciated!!
Tumblr media
༊ KUROO
Kuroo cannot sleep. It's nearly 3 in the morning and he's twisting and turning on the bed for about an hour now, unable to fall asleep. The other side of his bed seems unnaturally cold and empty due to your lack of presence. You both had gotten into an argument about 2 hours prior. You had tried to convey your thoughts across to him about how worried you were that he was overworking himself and in his state of tiredness he was definitely not in the mood for your nagging. He took out his annoyance on you which resulted in some back and forth yelling before you decided to give him some space and sleep on the couch. But it had been hours and however much he denied it, Kuroo could not sleep without you. So, deciding to swallow his stupid pride he went out to the living room just to find your shivering self on the couch. You had a thin blanket on and it was a cold night.
"I know you're not sleeping," he whispered as he knelt by the couch to look at you.
What he saw broke him, there were dried tears on your face. He always fell apart when he saw you cry.
"Look I'm really sorry for what I said. Half of those things, I didn't mean them and neither should I have uttered them in the first place. It has happened now and as much as I wish I could change it, I can't. So, I'm asking you to forgive me y/n. I'm really really sorry. I love you so much ," he stroked your cheek and you could not pretend anymore. You slowly opened your eyes to look at him.
"You do?" You asked silently.
"More than you could ever know, love. You're the best thing that's happened to me. You're not nagging when you worry about me. I'm sorry for saying that. I was annoyed and irritated and tired and I took it out on you like a fool. I've said hurtful things and I feel terrible for it. Forgive me please," he looked at you with so much love and adoration as he asked for forgiveness that you broke again. You sniffled a little before cracking a small smile.
"I've said some hurtful things as well. Things I shouldn't have said. I'm sorry," you whispered to him.
"It's okay. Come back to bed now love. Tomorrow, I'm taking the day off and we'll do whatever you want to do. Sounds good?" He smiled at you, stretching his hand towards you for you to take it.
"Sounds perfect," you smiled as you took his hand in yours.

༊ AKAASHI
Arguments with Akaashi were rare. Most of the time, you both would talk things out and solve the problem rationally rather than lashing out. You both tried to be logical and tried to communicate no matter how tired or angry you both were. But sometimes however, that was just not the case. Sometimes, things got out of hand, anger overpowered your more rational sides and things got ugly. Tonight just happened to be one of those nights. Honestly, you don't even know how the argument started. You just knew that both of you were exhausted from work and on top of that things had been rough in your personal life lately. These reasons probably got to you and an argument took place. You both had verbally hurt each other to the extent that Akaashi decided to sleep on the couch, unable to fight anymore. He left you in the bedroom alone and fuming. But the moment he picked up a blanket and went to the couch, regret immediately filled you up. You ran after him to the living room where he laid on the couch. God, he didn't even have a pillow under his head, his neck would hurt like crazy in the morning.
"Keiji," you called out his name and as you expected, there was no answer from him.
"Keiji I'm sorry," you sat at the end of the couch where his feet were propped up on the hand rest.
"I let my anger and frustration take over me and said some pretty shitty things. I'm sorry I really did not mean them. I would never," at that, he looked up at you to see your eyes getting teary as a frown took over your face.
"Don't cry y/n," he sat up and brought himself closer to you.
"I don't know what took over me. I'm so sorry. I always try to be calmer and more thoughtful while speaking but today I don't know. Work has been stressful and I probably took that out on you. Something I shouldn't have done and something I highly regret," you took his hand as you looked at him.
"I said some pretty awful stuff to you too, you know. You're not entirely at fault here. I'm sorry. Next time, I'll try to be more thoughtful and I'll definitely not yell at you again," he gave you a small smile as he opened his arms for you to hug him. You gladly did.
"Me too. Come to bed now. You didn't even bring a pillow with you. Do you want your neck to hurt?" He laughed a little at that.
"Always thinking about me aren't you," he hugged you tighter.
"Mhm. Keiji?" You started as you broke the hug to look at him. "We're okay right?"
"We will be, love."

Tumblr media
kuroo tetsuro
you woke up late today and weren't surprised that kuroo had already left for work by the time you woke up. but he did leave you a post-it note saying he made breakfast leftovers for you in the fridge.
you smile at the thought that kuroo took the time out of his day to make some food especially in the morning. however, as you're getting ready for the day, your eye catches the lunch bag that's sitting on the kitchen bar countertop.
"this idiot," you mumble, shaking your head with a smile on your face. you pull out your phone and shoot him a text.
y/n: thanks for the breakfast it was really good
tetsu: im glad :)
y/n: also you left your lunch at home stupid
tetsu: oh shit
tetsu: can you drop it off for me? i cant come home to pick up, im in a meeting rn
y/n: yeah that's fine
tetsu: thanks baby ill kiss u when i see u
tetsu: love u 2 the moon and back !!
y/n: ur so weird
y/n: love u 2 the moon and back <3
a few hours pass by and now you're taking the bus to head to kuroo's office with his lunch bag in hand. before leaving the house, you decided to swap his current lunch which was some leftovers with his favorite food, grilled salted mackerel.
you enter his office floor and are greeted by the office receptionist from the floor. "i'm just here to drop off some food for kuroo-san."
"oh yes, right this way," she stands up and opens the office door for you and points out where his room is.
as you're about to knock on his door, you hear his voice from the other side. "i'm not sure if i can come out tonight to eat kenma. y/n probably wants me home, you know how clingy they get sometimes."
your heart sinks to the floor.
has he always thought of me this way? clingy? i didn't mean to act that way? i just like being in his company. i didn't mean to be clingy. i didn't know he felt that way...
"anyways, i'll call you back kenma. i gotta get back to work. see ya later" he ends the call.
you take a deep breath, standing in front of the door, thinking about kuroo's words to his best friend. before you could even knock, the door opens and you're greeted by kuroo.
"oh y/n! you should've texted me you were here!"
you let out a laugh that sort of dies in your throat. "oh um i just wanted to surprise you that's all."
"come in, let's eat together. you can see the beautiful downtown view from here," he tries to usher you inside his personal office room.
you're a little uncomfortable so you hold yourself back from going on, "maybe another time, yeah? i gotta head back. i've got a lot of work to do with college and work and stuff."
"no yeah of course, i get it. work hard! but first..." kuroo smiles and before you can pull away, he kisses you on the head. "i'll see you when i get home. love you!"
too ashamed to even look at him as you walked out of his office, you just wave to him with your back facing him as you walked away.
you're now sitting on the bus on the way home, thinking about the way he called you clingy. "you know how clingy they get.." has he always thought i'm clingy? has he just been putting up with my annoying habits? i thought he liked the way i treated him. i didn't know he thought it was clingy.
you're trying to look back at your actions and now it's all coming back to you.
you're always trying to kiss him, hug him, cuddle him. you're always talking to him about random things from an occurrence at the grocery store to some new show you're watching. literally last night, you both were cuddling while watching a new episode of kuroo's favorite sit-com and you were running your fingers through his hair.
it all made sense.
you were clingy.
and he wanted space.
you were going to respect that.
kuroo comes home later that evening and announces himself with an "i'm home!"
you're on the dining table with the computer open, working on some new assignment and you smile at him. "welcome home," you say with a smile.
he's expecting you to get up and come over and hug him like you usually do but to his surprise, you continue to look back at your computer.
he assumes you're just busy and doesn't think much of it.
kuroo heads into the shared bedroom to unwind from his hectic day at work. he takes a shower and changes into some pajama pants and is now heading back to the living room to see what you're up to.
you're still sitting on the dining table with all your notebooks splayed out and computer open, working on what seems to be some really big project. he plops down next to you and starts squinting at the screen. he starts poking you to grab your attention from the screen.
"the mackerel was really good today."
"that's good."
silence envelops the atmosphere between the both of you until kuroo decides to speak again.
"what are you working on?"
"college stuff."
"maybe take a break now?" he suggests.
"i can't. it's due soon," your voice flat. "if you want dinner, there's some leftovers i made in the fridge."
"alright," he replies, getting up from the chair to the kitchen to warm up some food.
his shoulders droop a little. he was hoping to spend some time with you. but he is aware that something is off with you. he's not sure what it is but he knows something isn't right. you haven't given him a single kiss or even a hug since he's been back and your usual sarcastic remarks are gone.
you've barely even acknowledged his presence.
"maybe it's just an off day?" is what he convinces himself.
but those "off days" are starting to become more consistent.
you're out of bed before he wakes up in the morning and you barely talk to him when he comes home. you always end up sleeping after he falls asleep and he can't even stay up because of how exhausted he gets after work. the amount of physical affection has declined from you and every time he texts or talks to you, your replies are barely existent.
it feels like he's living by himself. when did it get so cold?
on the other hand, you think it's going well! you haven't been all up in his business lately. you're giving him the space he wants. you're hoping that kuroo is feeling much happier since you're smothering him less. sure, you miss getting to hold and cuddle him but this is what he wanted, right?
now that the week is over, kuroo is hoping to spend the weekend with you.
that morning, kuroo sets an alarm to wake up earlier than you in hopes of spending some extra affectionate time with you. however, the moment he wakes up, the other side of the bed is empty and cold.
he has no choice but to get out of bed to see where you are. there's no way you're up right now. at 7 am on a weekend? no way.
he walks out of the room and he feels his heart chip. you're sleeping on the couch, slightly shivering because the blanket you're using barely covers you. have you been sleeping on the couch this past week? why didn't i notice? kuroo begins to internally berate himself right now for letting you sleeping on the couch for this past week right under his nose.
with no hesitation, he bridal-style carries you back into the shared bedroom and tucks you under the duvet cover and comes back into bed.
however, you've already woken up and you sit up on the bed, startled. "w-what? where am i?"
he scoffs, "i brought you in our bedroom idiot."
"oh," you're now grabbing your stuff and climbing out to go back to the couch but kuroo stops you by grabbing your arm.
"where are you going?"
"to the couch?"
"but this is our bedroom?"
"no, this is your bedroom," you emphasize.
"y/n." his tone feels cold to you. "talk to me."
"we are talking, are we not?"
he starts scratching the back of his neck. "yes but you know it's not the same. what's going on baby?"
his hand to tries to reach your cheek to stroke it with his thumb but you turn away and immediately stand up from his bed. "it's okay kuroo, please go back to sleep. it's the weekend, you should rest."
his heart chips at the gesture. why are you avoiding him like this? what did he do? what happened to 'tetsu?'
"it's tetsu to you," he mumbles.
you open your mouth but shut it and cast you eyes away from his stare down at the floor.
"it's always been tetsu to you," he states.
you're still silent and he takes it as his queue to continue speaking.
"baby, everyday i come home from work and you barely acknowledge me. you're always busy doing 'college stuff' or something else. you barely hug me or even kiss me anymore. what happened? what did i do? did i do something wrong? did i overstep my boundaries? are you mad at me about something? please i wanna know what i did wrong so i can fix myself."
your heart softens at his words and you begin to immediately reassure him.
"there's nothing wrong with you... nothing has ever been wrong with you... i just want to work on giving you your space. i know that you think i'm clingy and so i wanted to work on just giving you room to breathe. i know i can be a little too much sometimes. i'm sorry for not realizing how clingy my actions were sooner. i'm sorry i-"
he immediately walks over to you and brings you to his chest, hugging you tightly. your eyes slightly widen. "don't you dare fucking apologize. it's not your fault. shit, it's never been your fault, baby. what made you even think that?"
in embarrassment, you mumble, "i heard you say i'm clingy to kenma. sorry i didn't mean to overhear."
"oh, my love," he pulls away and looks at you with a sad look in his eyes. "it's not what you think."
he sighs and he sits on the side of the bed and taps the bed space in front of him for you to sit down as well. "kenma's been trying to get me to go meet some new volleyball members to affiliate them with the jva and to be honest, i already have so much on my plate with the current affiliates, that i'm really trying to avoid going out for dinner with him. i'm trying to get one of my coworkers to go on my behalf to seal the deal but i can't find anyone willing to."
"i just used your name as an excuse. i swear on my life, i never really meant that. i never ever meant to hurt you."
still finding it hard to believe him, you mumble, "you don't need to lie.. i understand if-"
"y/n, i swear on my mother, i'm not lying," he interrupts. "every single fucking day, the only think i ever look forward to is seeing your beautiful face in my apartment. i look forward to your rambles about the new show you started watching or how the current professor you're shadowing is a douche. i love your bear hugs and i love the way you kiss me all over my face in the mornings. fuck, i love knowing that i get to go to sleep with you every night and i get to wake up to you every morning. i love you, just the way you are. please don't ever change yourself over some fucking lie i said."
"i'm so sorry y/n, so sorry for ever making you doubt my love for you," he intertwines his hand in yours and looks into your eyes. "i'll do anything to regain your trust.
he senses the hesitation in your eyes and honestly, he can't blame you. you've been harboring this guilt for a week and it makes sense that you're still feeling a little uncomfortable around him.
but to his surprise, you inch your way closer to him and hug his chest and the tears begin to fall. his body tenses and he feels so guilty about everything. he rubs reassuring circles on your back and kisses your head every few moments.
after you wipe your tears on his shirt, you look up at him and honestly kuroo hates to admit this but you still look gorgeous even with a tear stained face. he's grinning at you and begins to pepper your face with his kisses.
"love you to the moon and back," he whispers into your ear.
you chuckle and kiss him on the lips. "love you to the moon and back, tetsu."
in that moment, he swears to himself that he'll make sure that you never have to doubt his love for you ever again.

kozume kenma
as the ceo of his own startup company, a youtube streamer, and a college student, kenma can almost never find any time to himself. the only time he really feels at peace is either when he's asleep or when he's with you.
but sometimes things get so hectic and suffocating, he just wants to be alone, away from the world.
after a long day of classes, you walk into your shared apartment and you can hear kenma talking from his bedroom/home office. you try to keep quiet not disturbing him.
in hopes of cheering him up, you decide what better way to do so by making his favorite food: apple pie. you put down your stuff on the living room couch, grab the apron, and get to work.
kenma stays locked up in his bedroom for the majority of time that you're baking and a part of you just hopes that maybe he'll come out to just say "hi" or just accompany you to see what you're up to but unfortunately he doesn't.
after the pie is done baking in the oven and you've brought him a slice so he can get some food in his system because you're sure he hasn't been taking care of himself. you're hoping that maybe, just maybe, the both of you will finally get to spend some time together.
you knock on the door twice.
no response.
you knock once more and call out his name, "kenma, you busy still?"
still no response.
you sigh, realizing there was no hope in knocking, and decide to twist the knob and enter his room. you're greeted with the sight of him sitting on his gaming chair, knees to his chest, headphones over his ears, and slightly biting the eraser top of his pencil.
he must have felt the presence of someone else in the room with him because he looked away from his computer screen and his eyes widened. he slid his headphones off his ear and hung them around his neck.
"how long have you been home?" he bluntly asks.
"for an hour or two now, i think," you reply.
“oh sorry, i didn’t see you,” he mumbles.
you chuckle in response. “i didn’t think you would considering you’ve been cooped up in your room the entire time.”
“well yeah,” he says. “i’m busy.”
as he’s about to put his headphones back on and get back to work, you speak up. “i know you’re busy but do you wanna eat with me? i made-”
“can we talk later? i don’t have time for your clinginess right now.”
oh.
he puts his headphones on and indulges himself back in his work, not even registering the weight of his words.
you slowly walk out of his room, silently close the door, grab yourself a slice of apple pie originally made for the both of you, and plop yourself on the couch to watch some new show on the television.
after working for nearly hours on end, kenma finally finishes the load of work he had piled. now all he wants to do is just spend some time with you before going to bed. he walks out of the bedroom and is greeted by you asleep with the television humming in the background.
he can't help but let a small smile envelop his features. it's such a domestic sight and he wants to photograph this moment in time.
he knows he said some harsh words to you out of frustration but he hopes that you understand that he didn’t truly mean them.
he goes over and kisses your forehead and he smells the distinctive scent of apple pie and his heart softens at the thought that you made him his favorite food.
he goes over to his bedroom, grabs a blanket and lays it over you and goes under the blanket, snuggling himself closer to you. he hasn't felt this relaxed in a while and your presence is just so comforting to him.
he doesn't know what he'd do without you.
the next morning, you wake up and find yourself in an awkward position and your feel arms wrapped around your torso. you look to your left and are greeted by kenma's sleeping figure and you can't help but smile.
but you remind yourself of what he told you yesterday and you silently get up from the couch and begin to get ready for the rest of your day.
his words, "i don't have time for your clinginess right now", really had sent you into a spiral last night and you were too exhausted to think clearly. did you always come off as clingy to him? you were definitely a bit more energetic and enthusiastic than him but you never thought it was clingy?
you can't seem to think straight so you decide to maybe go out for a walk, just to take your mind off things. you just need some time alone, away from your apartment with him.
kenma wakes up only a few minutes later and he feels cold. his neck is sore, considering how he slept in an uncomfortable position because he wanted to sleep with you. however, to his surprise, he doesn't find you asleep next to him.
as he walks around the house, calling your name, a sense of urgency begins to form in the pit of his stomach.
he dials your number and it goes to voicemail.
he does it again. still voicemail.
he's about to call you one more time until he hears the jangle of keys and the door opening. a sigh of relief leaves his mouth and as you're about to turn your keys to open the door, he's a step ahead of you, opening the door for you.
"oh my god, i thought you went missing," kenma hugs you, catching you by surprise. "where'd you go?"
hesitant to reply, you say, "oh just went on a walk, that's all."
"you should've told me, we could've gone together," he states. "i feel like we haven't seen each other in forever."
"it's fine. don't worry about it."
there's something wrong and he can sense it in your demeanor. as you're heading to the master bedroom, he can see the way your shoulders slump as you put your keys back. he doesn't address your distant behavior, thinking that you're just having a rough morning and it'll get better as the day goes on.
unfortunately, it doesn't get better.
you seem to be fine but you just feel incredibly distant.
kenma's been playing games in his room all day and unlike usual, you're not in his bedroom watching him play or sitting on the bed scrolling through your phone. his gaming experience isn't the same when you're not there.
he pauses his game and goes out to the living room to see you lying down on the couch, scrolling through videos on your phone. he wants to ask why you're not staying with him but he doesn't want to make overstep your boundaries, especially since it seems like you're not in a good mood.
but that's anything from what you want.
you want him to ask you to stay in his room and keep you company. but because he hasn't done so, his word "clingy" began to scream louder in your head and to be frank, that's the only thing roaming in your head.
"do you want to do anything today?" he asks. "you know.. because it's the weekend and we can go out if you want? like going out to eat?"
a part of you began to feel guilty considering he was thinking about what you wanted to do and you hated feeling like a burden towards him. he already expressed his disapproval with you when he said he found you clingy so you didn't want to impose any further.
"no it's okay," you reply, eyes glued to your phone. "i don't want to annoy you or anything.. so i'll just go on my own or something..."
he hums in response but his eyebrows furrow as he doesn't seem to move from his spot. he can tell there's something wrong and you're obviously being very dodgy with him about the subject which is why he decides to take a seat on the couch and snatch your phone from your hands before you can even register what's happened.
"hey give me back my phone!" you sit up, stretching yourself over to grab your phone back from him in a failed attempt.
"not until you tell me what's wrong," he says flat.
you sigh, knowing that this conversation isn't inevitable. you can't avoid him forever "you called me clingy yesterday, kenma. sorry that i don't really want to hang out with you right now."
the words that leave your mouth have kenma in a state of shock. you took that seriously? you really thought he meant that? in order to ease his busy day of meetings back to back, you came home baked him some apple pie to ease him from his stresses.
and what did he do in return? called you clingy when you just wanted to spend some well-deserved time with him. god, he was being so ungrateful. his body fills with guilt when he he realizes you took his comment to heart.
“honey, i-” he starts and then is cut off with your words.
"i understand where you were coming from, i like to show my affection with you through physical touch and i know you’ve never been one to really reciprocate that," you begin to ramble. "so i’m really sorry for pushing your boundaries and i’ll give you the space that you need."
guilt is eating him away and he needs to clear the air now, otherwise you might be closed off forever and he’s not sure if he’s ever going to be able to reconnect with you.
“y/n, honey, don't apologize for this. it’s not your fault at all,” he starts. he puts down the phone onto the couch and grabs both of your hands and squeezes them assuringly. “i'm sorry for pushing you away and calling you clingy. you didn't.. you never deserve to be told that."
his hand finds its way to your cheek and he begins to rub comforting slow circles. seeing the sullen look on your face made him realize that he never wants to see you like this ever again. it was like you had lost the light in your eyes. kenma hated how he had diminished that so quickly by making you think that he didn't like your company.
he loves you so much; he could never imagine what life would be like without your presence.
a small smile begins to creep back on to your face and kenma finds himself in a slight sense of relief.
"it's okay," you finally utter out. "do you wanna watch that new episode? apparently there is so much drama now and i'm avoiding socials so i don't get spoiled..."
he chuckles, "i'll do anything with you."
he knows that he can't take back his words from before but as he's sitting on the couch with you in his embrace, he knows he can show you his love through his actions. he'll do anything to bring back that trust to you.

stepping stone
Tumblr media
he promised.
he promised he would love you; that he would care for you.
he would do the subtle things such as pulling you closer whenever you were in public, tucking those few pesky strands of hair behind your ear as to get a better view of your features, spontaneously take you out on late night drives and treating you to picnics in fields one could only conjure in the most enchanting of books,
the laughter, the passion, the love.
the adoration the two of you held for one another was unimaginable
he described you as irreplaceable; one in a million.
so why is he now doing this with her? now he’s pulling her closer into his warm embrace, tucking her hair behind her ears, taking her out on spontaneous late night drives and treating her to picnics.
that was meant to be you.
you were not one in a million to him. you were merely a stepping stone to transport him to the next chapter of his life whilst you were left many pages behind.
he lied.

just thinking about kuroo as a father.
he'd be so doting for his baby, so in love and so infatuated with it.
he'd never fail to smother it with his love, never failing to peck soft kisses on it's forehead or cheeks, whispering little "so cute,"s or "my baby."
his bonding time with the baby was all the time, he enjoyed the little moments where his baby would just lay against his chest, sleeping softly.
he'd take note of every single detail of his baby, his hands poking and proding at the soft chubs. he had obsession with his baby's hands, he thought it was so adorable—the way the baby's hands were so small and chubby in comparison to his much bigger hands.
he would swoon in secret about the little resemblance the baby had from you, saying things like "you look just like your mommy," or "look you have you mommy's [x]~"
you would sleep soundly at night, it was rare when you would wake up for night duty, because he was always eager to spend that precious late night alone time with the baby–even if he was on the verge of passing out from exhaustion.
a few times, out of curiosity, he lightly bit his baby's cheek, just because he thought since it was chubby and soft, that it would maybe taste good.
his baby's laughs were just a beautiful melody to his ears, he would never get sick of hearing the sweet coos and incoherent words from his baby.
at some point, at night, he began to cry while holding the baby. he just couldn't help his overwhelmed feelings of happiness. he couldn't be any happier being with you; and now the two of you even had a baby together?
heaven.
he'd raise his baby with curiosity, always answering his child's questions even if they were stupid or nonsense. he'd then follow it up with a question of his own, creating a cycle of more curiosity and questions.
he'd be there for every soccer game, for every championship, for every event, you name it, and he's there.
he'll happily exclaim "that's my kid right there!", even if he comes off as obnoxious and snobby.
he couldn't careless about how loud he was, he just needed everyone to know that his child would forever be his greatest thing to ever happen to him.

heyyy!
i dont know if you're still taking requests but i couldn't stop thinking of angry confessions with Iwaizumi & Bokuto
Tumblr media
ANGRY CONFESSIONS | 2
Tumblr media
characters: bokuto + iwaizumi + kuroo + sakusa + (gn!reader)
notes: ooh it's hard thinking of bokuto being angry so it's moreso upset for him + another anon asked for kuroo and sakusa so i added them
part one / part two
Tumblr media
★ bokuto gets all pouty and crosses his arms when he sees you. looks miserable whenever you enter the room, and obviously you pick up on it, his mood radiates wherever he is. one day you catch him alone and ask him if you've done something. he grumbles no, pouting. but you press on cause you know something's up. he reluctantly confesses, 'i just...i'm in love with you, okay? and i hated seeing you with that guy...' won't look you in the eye, but when he hears you confess that you actually feel the same way, he perks up like a puppy, mood doing a complete 180.
Tumblr media
★ iwaizumi starts giving you attitude and barely giving you one word answers when you talk to him. tries to avoid you too but you confront him, literally walk in front of him and block him when he tries to evade you. if looks could kill, you'd absolutely be dead, but he's really glaring to mask his feelings. you pester him until he tells you what's wrong and he answers, frustrated as ever. 'it's because i have feelings for you!' he gets too embarrassed so he looks away but his eyes widen and he stops breathing when you gently grab his face and tell him you feel the same.
Tumblr media
★ kuroo is really snarky with you all of a sudden and there seems to be more bite to his jokes. he smirks all the same, but there's something different in the way he looks at you. like he's bothered and itching to tell you something. you get sick of it and call him out when you're just with him and kenma. and kenma is really tired of hearing kuroo rant and not actually do something about it so he mutters at him to just tell you. you obviously get curious/annoyed by this and push him to tell you too. he gives you attitude, saying how he doubts you don't know. (in his eyes you've been stringing him along but that's not true) you tell him you really have no idea what's going on and that's when he breaks, scoffing. 'you're telling me you actually can't tell that i'm in love with you? yeah, right.' when he sees your reaction though, he pauses, his face dropping, now worried about the fact that he just confessed. when you tell him how you feel though, you can see the light enter his eyes again, and an actual smile on his lips.
Tumblr media
★ sakusa is suddenly very curt with you, barely looking at you when you're around (when you can see him anyway. his eyes trail after you when you go.) he gives short responses and you can't help but feel hurt. but you can be petty too, so you start giving him the same treatment. soon, you can barely stand to be in the same room together, tensions high when you're near each other. it's silly what leads to your confessions, but the two of you run into each other in front of an elevator, you just roll your eyes and say you'll take the stairs. he mutters under his breath something about you running along to your little boyfriend and that makes you pause. you turn around, confused and offended, asking what that's supposed to mean. his eyes narrow and he asks if you think he's stupid. you respond that you don't know what's up with him but you don't have a bf. then it dawns on you and he can see the gears turning in your head and suddenly his mouth gets dry. you ask if this is why he's been acting like this and then why he cares so much. you notice the blush on his face and he knows you're not dumb enough to believe a lie but he's embarrassed so he gets defensive. 'why do you think? obviously i have feelings for you.' he looks away but he looks back at you, offended and ready to go off when you call him an idiot. he only softens when you say cause you feel the same.

title: to rebuild a home pairing: kuroo x f! reader genre: angst / fluff, post timeskip! wc: 6.8k m.list
a/n: companion piece to the original love knows not its depth, from kuroo's perspective.
Tumblr media
Kuroo Tetsuro is doing alright.
He’s deftly juggling the roles life has handed him. His tenth wedding anniversary is coming up. He’s gotten a nice pair of earrings and a reservation at Tokyo’s hottest omakase for you to celebrate. The girls are doing nicely at school - Aiko’s grades are excellent, and Fumiko’s not gotten into any schoolyard fights unlike Bokuto’s trio of sons. His bosses seem happy with him too, paving the way for him to climb the corporate ladder rung by rung. He’s earned each promotion by burning days in the office, nights in the izakayas schmoozing with his bosses, but it’s worth it, even if it admittedly comes at the expense of being with you and the girls.
It’s a sacrifice he has to make so he can provide you with the fairytale life he’s always promised you. Not that you’ve ever complained about the trade-off.
“She’s the best wife and mom I could’ve asked for”, he tells Kenma, when the former setter asks about you. “I don’t know how she does it.”
Kenma frowns. “You make her sound like a video game character.”
“That’s cos she’s amazing -”
“Kinda sucks that she pretty much has to juggle a full time job and the kids on her own most of the time.”
“She manages perfectly well”, Kuroo enthuses, oblivious to the barb in his friend’s words. “By the time I get home, the girls are in bed, the house is clean, and there’s even a lunch box packed for me each day. She’s a rockstar at work too - should be up for a promotion next financial year.”
“Huh”, Kenma sniffs. “I wonder when she gets a break.”
Kuroo’s too distracted by the round of beers that’s delivered to his table to think deeply about his best friend’s apprehension. When he stumbles through the front door that night, he finds you crouched over the coffee table, frantically typing at your laptop. As expected, the girls are in bed, there’s nothing out of place.
“All good?” he asks you in passing, his mind already filing the tasks on his plate for tomorrow - organising a publicity event jointly held by the JVA and Bouncing Ball Corporation to introduce new national team members, reviewing the proposed budget for this year’s international competitions, popping by the under-19 team to see if there are indeed any promising candidates - he’s already one foot in the bedroom, ready to call it a night.
He doesn’t notice the violets blooming under your eyes.
“Mm.” You don’t look up. “Have a good night.”
Tumblr media
Kruoo Tetsuro thinks he’s doing alright.
Bokuto Kotaro, for some reason, doesn’t think so. “Mitsuki said you’re lucky you’re not married to her cos she’ll skin you alive”, he informs him, as if Kuroo shares his love for women capable of chomping his head off in one bite.
Maybe the Bokutos operate on a different metric - because yes, they’re the model of egalitarianism with Mitsuki the high powered general counsel for Kenma’s Bouncing Ball Corporation (based on his referral, he likes to add, cos’ it’s funny to watch Mitsuki growl) and Kotaro the part time coach, full time stay at home dad to his wolfpack of sons, but that doesn’t mean his marriage is on the rocks.
As a child, he was the unwitting witness to his parents’ fights, which culminated in his mother walking out of the door, his father crying over a thick stack of divorce papers. His grandparents took him in, gave him stability and love and comfort but he swore to himself he’s never going to put his daughters through that.
Sure, it’s been a while since you’ve had a night to yourself. The last time he remembers you taking time away from the girls was to go out for dinner with him to celebrate his latest promotion - his conscience stings a little that he can’t remember the last time you’ve taken a break from everything you’ve been doing for him and the girls, but he’ll make it up to you once he has time. You always understand.
Still, just to be sure, he checks in on you again.
“You alright?”, he reaches for your hand, when he climbs into bed that night.
You’re lying in bed. He should find it odd that you’re still awake at this time of the night, staring up at the ceiling as if there’s something to be found there, but he falls asleep in the slow seconds, doesn't hear your response. When he wakes, you’ve already taken the girls to school. He gets himself ready for work, loops his tie around his neck, grabs his briefcase and the bento you’ve so lovingly packed for him, and hops on the train. He runs through his routine like clockwork, but there’s a niggling feeling that he’s missed something important, possibly something to do with you.
Did you say something to him last night?
It doesn’t matter. He makes a mental note to purchase a spa day for you - but that’s promptly forgotten when he’s greeted by a flood of emails and an invitation from his boss to go out for drinks that night.
Tumblr media
Kuroo still thinks he’s doing alright.
“You’re lucky”, his boss toasts him. “Your wife doesn’t complain like mine when I go out drinking, even though I tell her I need to do it for work.”
“She’s an angel”, Kuroo replies, quietly bursting with pride. “Never complains.”
“Lucky man”, his boss says. “My wife is such a nag.”
He misses the last train home that night, drops you a text not to wait up and stumbles around Shibuya trying to find a cab. It must be a busy night because by the time he manages to flag down one, it’s three a.m. and his head is pounding from the excess of alcohol and lack of solid food and water. He fumbles with his keys, almost falls through his front door when the lock gives way. “Tadaima”, he says out of habit, too-loudly, before his stomach lurches and he has to make a mad dash for the kitchen sink.
“Tetsuro?”
He wants to respond, but he’s too busy emptying out the contents of his stomach. He shouldn’t have woken you up. He shouldn’t greet you with a mess for you to clean up. He shouldn’t lean so heavily on you that you stagger beneath his weight.
He shouldn’t do all of that yet he does so anyway. You tuck him, a grown man, into bed.
Tomorrow, he’ll apologise. Tomorrow, he’ll make it up to you.
Tomorrow comes. He wakes up.
You’re gone.
Tumblr media
Kuroo Tetsuro is not alright.
He’s ashamed to admit that he doesn’t even notice you’ve taken off until it’s way past lunch when your mother drops him a text to ask if he’s picking up the girls or if he intends to leave them with her overnight.
“What d’you mean?” he texts her, confused.
His heart stops when your mother responds to say you dropped off the girls at her place without much of an explanation, an overnight bag slung over your shoulder. You don’t pick up your phones, his calls going straight to voicemail. For the first time in forever, he sheepishly asks his boss for urgent leave from work so he can rush home to figure out what’s going on.
You always take your laptop with you, but it’s sitting at home. He knows it’s an invasion of privacy, but he types in your password (his birthday), and your web browser reveals a booking for a ryokan in Hakone, where the both of you honeymooned almost a decade ago. It’s an hour away by train, far too much time for him to sit and stew in his thoughts. He wonders if you’ve become sick of your life with him, whether you’ve found someone new, and by the time he’s reached the ryokan and charmed the receptionist to let him into your room, he’s teetering on the edge of giving into his frustration, entertaining thoughts about yelling at you for being so goddamned irresponsible, cos how could you just walk out on him and the girls -
Until you walk in, thankfully alone.
It strikes him that it’s the most refreshed he’s seen you look in a very, very long time. Your cheeks are glowing, your eyes sparkle, and there’s a spring in your step that he hasn’t seen since you’ve had the girls.
Still, he can’t help but remain a little peeved. “I’ve been calling you all afternoon”, he informs you. “I was worried.”
He immediately regrets his words as he watches the light die in your eyes.
“Were you?”, you ask, as if you were addressing a stranger. “Really?”
“Of course”, he frowns, slowly getting up to approach you, concerned when you start to sway. “You’re my wife and the mother of our girls, of course I care.”
Laughter spills from your lips, an undercurrent of bitterness and contempt that’s threatening to drag you under before his very eyes. “If you really cared, you’d have noticed that your wife is broken”, you tell him between gasps, your shoulders caving in. “I tried fixing myself with a break, but you can’t even give me that.”
He’s starting to realise that things aren’t alright at all. You flinch when he takes a step towards you, an action which stabs him clean through his heart because he’s your husband, your Tetsuro, your person. Tea, then, a neutral offering that manages to calm you down enough to take a seat, even if you’re still shaking, falling to pieces while laughing, laughing -
“Tell me what’s wrong”, he begs. “Tell me what I can do to fix you.”
You take a sip of tea. It’s hot enough to burn you, but you don’t seem to notice.
“I can’t do this anymore, Tetsuro.”
“Don’t say that”, he snaps, his inner child recoiling because he can’t bear to have his girls go through what he went through, wondering if it was his fault, his very existence that caused his parents to split up. “The girls and I need you -”
You don’t seem to hear him.
“Princess”, he falls back on his pet name for you, rusty from lack of use. “Come back to me.”
You’re unmoved, your eyes unseeing, deaf to his pleas. Sip after sip, you gulp down scalding tea, each action jerky, mechanical. Frozen, in an impenetrable placidness that he can’t read. You’re sitting right in front of him but you’re not really there at all.
“Let’s talk when you’re back home”, he finally says. “Have a good break.”
The immature little boy that still lives in his psyche is still unconvinced that it’s a bad idea to drag you back home with him posthaste, but you asked for a break, and it’s the least he can give to you.
You allow him to roll out your futon for you, to swaddle you in layers of blankets as if that would keep you from falling apart any further. As he kisses your forehead to bid you goodnight and goodbye, he feels the brittleness of your bones, the thinness of your skin beneath his palms and he spends the hour-long train ride home wondering how he managed to look away long enough for you to turn into a shadow of your past self.
He goes straight to your mother’s house to retrieve the girls. As penance, he stands at the front door, head bowed, letting your mother yell at him in front of the neighbours for being a useless husband and an irresponsible father. After all, he deserves every word she flings in his face. He’s just thankful that she doesn’t ream him out in front of the girls.
“Where’s mama?” Fumiko mumbles half asleep into his neck. “Want mama.”
He cradles her closer. “She’ll be home tomorrow”, he tells her, hoping with every fibre of his being that that does not turn out to be a lie. Aiko, older and wiser, just stays quiet, so he forces a smile on his face for her sake.
Tumblr media
Kuroo Tetsuro is far from okay.
The strain of the day wears on him and he’s sure there are burning emails in his inbox for him to firefight, but there’s a long list of chores to be done in your absence. The girls’ school bags need to be packed (in the case of five year old Fumiko) or checked (for ten year old Aiko), their uniforms to be laid out, the laundry sorted and folded. He barely gets any sleep before he has to hop out of bed to throw together a cold breakfast of milk and cereal that makes Fumiko burst into tears and Aiko’s face droops. By the time he shuffles his two cranky children out of the house and into their respective schools, he’s late for work.
He meets Bokuto and Kenma for lunch since there’s no lunch bento waiting for him in the fridge, though he regrets the decision to leave the refuge of his work desk for the boardroom of Bouncing Ball Corporation when Mitsuki joins them and, sharp-eyed as ever, sinks her talons into him.
“You look like shit”, she says to him as a greeting.
“Thanks”, he grounds out. The girls demanded he work their hair into the neat braids they insisted you always do, so bedhead would have to do for him today.
“I’ve never seen you without hair gel before”, Bokuto marvels. “You look weird.”
“I had a crap morning, okay”, he snaps, biting the head off the karaage fish in his store bought bento, which he resents for tasting worse than those you usually make for him. “So I’m sorry if I look slightly less than presentable -”
“You look like a man whose wife just left him - “
Mitsuki’s just stepped right on the wound he’s tried to keep hidden, festering and bleeding beneath his skin, so like an animal lashing out when it’s hurt, Kuroo slaps the table with both palms and snarls.
“Don’t - don’t fucking say that, okay? She’s just taking a break. She’ll come home.”
He can’t stand to see the shock and pity on his closest friends’ faces. “She’s coming home today”, he repeats softly, almost to himself, as if he’s little Fumiko in need of reassurance that the person she needs most in the world hasn’t just abandoned her. “It’s gonna be okay.”
Perhaps it’s the maturity that comes with fatherhood, because Bokuto is the first to react. “That’s right, you’re gonna be okay”, he soothes, pulling Kuroo into his seat. “Kenma’s gonna call your boss and tell him that you’re gonna spend the rest of the afternoon here to plan some event - “
“Sponsorship for the Under-19 team, done”, Kenma snaps his phone shut.
“Guys, I’m fine - ”
“Pretending everything’s okay isn’t going to help.”
Kuroo deflates. “Thanks, Kenma.”
Shelving his worthless pride to lay bare the situation he’s found himself in, that by neglecting his duties as a husband and father, he’s forced you to the brink of a mental breakdown, bad enough that you’ve left him - temporarily, he hopes. In the span of a few hours, he’s already found himself at his wit’s end, struggling to handle both the demands of the kids and his job, something that he realises he’s left you to bear, alone.
“But I can’t figure out why she didn’t just tell me she was feeling overwhelmed”, he says, pulling at a fraying thread in his shirt. “I would’ve listened. I would’ve done better.”
“She shouldn’t have to tell you to do your part”, Mitsuki waves away Bokuto’s desperate gesture for her not to kick a man when he’s already down.
“But I didn’t know -”
“Y’know, I really can’t stand men like you. You guys are amazing at work, able to anticipate your bosses’ and clients’ needs. At this point, you don’t even need to be told by your bosses  to jump, you don’t even ask your clients ‘how high’ - yet, for some reason, you manage to turn off your brain the minute you walk in through the front door at home.”
“Maybe I should ask her for a list of things I can help her with -”
Bokuto claps his hand over Mitsuki’s mouth. “Ehhh..you might not wanna finish your sentence or Mitsuki might really bite your head off.”
Kuroo winces, snapping his mouth shut.
“Maybe you can think of it in a different way”, Bokuto says. “Instead of ‘helping’ her - cos that’s just placing the mental burden on her - at least, I think that’s the term Mitsuki-chan used when she explained it to me -” the affronted lawyer nods begrudgingly, and beaming, he continues - “you gotta do your half of the work!”
“Level up”, Kenma provides, rather unhelpfully.
“Open your eyes and use your brain”, Mitsuki says bluntly, rolling her eyes, though her tone is less sharp.
“Where do I start?” Kuroo asks.
Tumblr media
Step one.
He picks the girls up from his mother in law’s place, bears with the lecture that’s awaiting him, and sheepishly asks them what their mama usually feeds them for dinner and breakfast, making a mental note of it. Tonight, he’ll cheat by feeding them gyudon at Sukiya, but he drops by the supermarket to procure the ingredients he needs for tomorrow’s breakfast and a bouquet of pink roses, even though he knows it’s probably too little, too late. He counts himself lucky that Fumiko loves bathtime, only needing supervision to wash and dry her hair, and Aiko’s responsible enough to work through her homework without prompting, but he’s still exhausted by the time they both head to bed.
His job doesn’t end there. Running through the checklist Mitsuki begrudgingly allowed Bokuto to give him, he surveys the apartment, comparing it against the mental image of how everything was before you left it. Toys scattered, to be put back in place. Dust on floor, to be vacuumed up. A heap of laundry in the basket, to be hung, dried, ironed.
Just as he finishes all these tasks, the front door swing opens.
“Tadaima”, you call out, voice hushed.
He nearly trips over his feet in his haste to relieve you of your luggage, usher you into a seat by the kitchen counter. “Okaerie”, he breathes,
“The girls?” you ask.
He’ll buy Bokuto lunch next time. “I picked them up from your mom”, he responds. “Don’t wake them up, I just put them to bed.”
You peek into their rooms nonetheless. “Thanks”, you say, heading next to the fridge. “By the way, I’ll pay you back for the hotel room from my own money, don’t worry.”
That’s the last thing on his mind. Besides, his sin is being a neglectful husband, not a miser. “It’s fine, I’ll cover it”, he scratches his head, embarrassed that you’re even bringing it up. “I should’ve realised you needed a break.”
That makes you frown, but you accept anyway. He watches you stack bread, eggs, ham, cheese, and it strikes him that you’re already worrying about the girls’ breakfast when you look as if you haven’t even had your own dinner.
“You haven’t had dinner?” he asks.
You reply carelessly that you’ve had a bento on the train back. You don’t even bother to look at him.
“I’ll take the girls in the mornings from now”, he tells you. “Sleep in and take a break.”
That gets your attention.
“Really?”
He plasters a confident smirk on his face to reassure you that he’s got it all in hand.
“Oh”, you’re adorable when you’re confused, but he hates that he’s given you reason to doubt him. “Wake me up if you need my help?”
“I won’t”, he promises.
It’s time for him to level up.
Tumblr media
Step two.
He’s not going to lie to himself that he finds it difficult to do even half of what you used to do. Taking over the responsibility of wrangling the girls out of bed and into school, coming home early enough for dinner with you, that requires him to have hard conversations with his boss about not being able to go out for drinks or come in early anymore which probably hurts his chances for his next promotion, forces him to give up an hour or two of sleep, but it’s worth it if it allows you to heal.
“Don’t expect a gold star for your efforts”, Mitsuki warned him. “It’s just what you should’ve been doing before, so it’s time for you to go above and beyond.”
He takes her words to heart. You deserve to go to work well-rested, to wind down at night with a hot bath. He’ll buy a robot vacuum and pour over its manual that’s thicker than a textbook, do laundry loads while hopping on and off conference calls, wrestle the iron to press down his own shirts.
You seem baffled by the sudden shift in the winds, but he just pretends everything is normal. Business as usual. Things are just as they should’ve been.
In his next push to right his wrongs, he organises a Saturday dinner date with you. The girls are packed off with your mother, he makes the reservation, books the cab, compliments your dress. He asks you about your work (tiring), your boss (a micro-manager), the books you’ve read recently (nada, zilch). In the uphill battle to keep the conversation from being stilted, he makes a fatal mistake.
“We can make it work if you want to quit your job and stay home full time with the children.”
In his mind, that was a reasonable suggestion to make since you seem to hate your job and boss with a fiery passion. But you stare at him wide-eyed, your initial confusion hardening into anger.
“Did the guys at work tell you it’s easier to have a housewife instead of a working wife? Are you saying this because you don’t think I’m a good enough mother to our girls?”
You don’t give him a chance to backpedal, shooting a sarcastic apology for being selfish enough to refuse to be reliant on him, so he just slumps back in his chair in defeat.
“I just want you to be happy”, he murmurs. “Forget I ever said that.”
Tumblr media
Step three.
To figure out step three, he schedules an emergency lunch meeting on Monday. The troops convene in Kenma’s boardroom to listen to his sorry tale with Mitsuki in charge of the post–battle analysis.
“And remind me again, where did you two meet?”
His face lights up at the memory of his first meeting with you. “Finance 102”, he replies. “We used to be academic rivals turned teammates after I convinced her I was smart enough for her to work with on projects.”
“What made you fall in love with her?”
“As much as I hate it, I have to admit she’s probably smarter than me”, he says, though the fond smile that creeps onto his face betrays the fact that he loves that about you. “She’s just - her, she’s headstrong and funny. Did I tell you how she tried to stab me with her fork when I stole food off her plate -”
“Only a million times”, Kenma interjects.
“She’s always been independent and ambitious, with big dreams and an even bigger heart.”
“Well”, Mitsuki says, adopting the mildest tone she’s used on him this month. “Does that sound like a woman who’d choose to stay home and depend on her husband? Not that there’s anything wrong with being a stay-at-home parent - Koutaro makes my career possible, and I’m the luckiest woman in the world to have him as my husband.”
“Babyyyyy.” Bokuto bawls, looking at MItsuki as if she hangs the moon in the sky.
Gross. Kenma seems to agree. “Let’s get back to Kuroo’s failing marriage”,
“So I shouldn’t bring up the suggestion that she quit her job again?”
His three person council shake their heads in unison. “Just keep what you’re doing”, Bokuto pipes up. “Sounds like you’re already doing the right things! Just gotta keep making sure she’s not holding up the sky herself.”
He can do that.
“And maybe talk to her?”, Kenma offers.
That’s the suggestion that he wants to dismiss right off the bat because he’s too much of a coward to even face the possibility that you might leave him. He doesn’t want to become his dad so he resolves to keep his head down and continue pushing ahead with his efforts to prove to you that he can be the husband you deserve, so you won’t wake up one day and decide to walk out on him again.
But his subconscious fears force his nightmares into overdrive. Dreams of packed bags and stacks of divorce papers makes him yelp loud enough for you to roll over and shake him awake. He’s a terrible husband for disturbing your sleep, but in his sleep-dazed state of confusion he just sinks back into the pillow, exhaling a sigh of relief.
“Thank the gods you haven’t left.”
“Why would I leave?”, you mumble, turning away again. “It’s my home, isn’t it.”
He sits up, rubs the nightmares away from his eyes. “I was afraid you left me.”
The silence nearly suffocates him. The sudden need to know exactly where you stand eats away at him and he crawls towards you. “Are you going to leave me”, he asks, praying to all the gods in the universe that you’ll reassure him otherwise.
His heart breaks anew when he hears a small sob, buried in the bedclothes. “I don’t know, Tetsuro”, you finally say. “I’m tired of being alone in a marriage when it’s supposed to be us working together.”
“I’m sorry.” There’s nothing much he can say.
A broken whisper. “I’m tired”, you exhale. “I think I deserve better.”
“I’ll make it better”, he promises.
He will. He will.
Tumblr media
Kuroo Tetsuro is trying his best.
He takes a cooking class on the weekends to learn how to prepare bento boxes that are nutritious and easy on the wallet. He takes over the ferrying of Fumiko to her swimming lessons, work on Aiko’s art projects with her. He hires a part time cleaner to pick up the deep cleaning, so you and he have time to take the girls out on weekend outings instead of spending all day on a week’s worth of cumulated chores. A dishwasher appears in the house. He makes it a game for he and the girls to load and unload dishware each night.
“There’s a networking wine night for finance next Wednesday”, he tells you casually. “I’ll make sure to be home so you can go, if you want.”
You goggle at him.
“Go schmooze so the world knows you’re as amazing as I know you are.”
You trust him enough to leave the girls behind in his care and go. He counts that as a win.
Some nights he still can’t get home in time for dinner, but he always makes sure he’s home in time for a bedtime story and a goodnight kiss. Aiko avers that at the grand old age of ten, she doesn’t need her papa to tuck her to bed anymore, but she sidles into Fumiko’s room everynight and sits in the corner of her little sister’s bed as the littler girl listens to his tall tales.
“I met a princess when I was eighteen”, he says with a grin when he notices you listening in. “Instead of a crown, she armed herself with a fork, ready to cut down anyone who’d cross her.”
His heart skips a beat when he hears your voice from the doorway. “Don’t be dramatic”, you interrupt, a small smile growing on your face. “You were trying to steal my food and didn’t stop ‘til I stabbed you.”
Fumiko huffs, unhappy that her story’s being interrupted, but he can’t seem to tear his gaze away from you. “You left it on the table, princess. I consider that fair game.”
“Let ‘to-san tell the story, ka’san.” Aiko grumbles.
He savours your laughter. It tastes better than the finest wine.
Tumblr media
“I can’t believe I have to fly all the way to Italy just to meet Kageyama-kun”, he huffs. “At least Hinata is meeting us there, I’ll revolt if I had to go up to Brazil as well.”
“You know it can’t be helped”, you reply. “The promotional activities planned need your presence, and it’s only for a week.”
“Will you be okay when I’m gone?”
His fears melt away when you hand him his suitcase, a flask of his favourite tea. “I’ve always managed fine. Nothing’s changed.”
His little monsters, realising that he’s about to leave, decide to launch a synchronised attack on him. Aiko throws herself at him in a bear hug. Fumiko yanks at his sleeve demanding a thousand kisses.
“Yes, well. I’ll be home soon. Please wait for me” he says to you when the girls finally release him. The expression on your face is unreadable, but you don’t pull away when he takes the liberty of taking your hand in his.
He feels your heartbeat accelerates. You glance up at him, almost shy. “I’ll see you soon.”
He’s so tempted to call his boss and pretend that he’s too ill to get on that damned flight, but he’s pretty sure that would get him fired. Instead, he calls you and the girls every day, and brings home a luggage full of presents for all of you.
When he’s home, he celebrates by putting on the frilliest pink apron he’s ever seen (courtesy of Yaku, who sent it to him all the way from Moscow as a joke) and throwing an elaborate takoyaki party, replete with customised toppings - octopus, cheese and shrimp, which the girls enjoyed even if he burnt the first batch and had to call Fukunaga frantically for tips to rescue the rest. It turns out to be such a success that he makes it a weekly event. Okonomiyaki is next, which he flips with expert confidence on a hot plate to the applause of you and the girls.
“Itadakimasu”, you clap your hands together. “It tastes good.”
He nearly melts into his pan. “Thank you”, he replies. “It means a lot, coming from you.”
Tumblr media
His nights are still plagued by nightmares.
Things are better with you, he likes to think. The violets beneath your eyes are replaced by roses in your cheeks. He hears you humming about the house again. You pick up reading again,  the shelves in the house start to groan under the weight of books belonging to the girls and you. You’re as eager as the girls to go on the next adventure, whether it be a summer night out in the park with sparklers, or a nerf gun battle at home on rainy days.
Still, he doesn’t know for sure what he’s doing is enough for you and he’s too much of a coward to check. So he’ll wake up almost every night, fumble in the dark just to make sure you’re there.
You’re there, until you aren’t.
It’s three in the morning. The space beside him is cold and empty.
He throws off the blankets, trips on his bed slippers. He crashes through into the living room and oh, there you are - sitting at the dining table, typing furiously at your laptop while mouthing off to yourself about the ridiculous demands your client makes.
“What’s wrong?” you frown.
He walks towards you, trying to discern that you’re real, you’re there, not some trick of the light..
“You’re - you’re still here.”
You nod slowly, eyeing him strangely. “My boss called and asked me to send out an urgent email. I was just about to go back to bed.”
He exhales, tries to force his trembling heart back into his chest. He thinks he’s doing a good job trying to act nonchalant, smoothing back his frazzled mane of hair, but you see right through him as you always do.
“Tetsuro”, you say slowly. “Is everything alright?
The truth tumbles out of his mouth. “I thought you were gone.”
Then he hangs his head, looks at his feet, afraid that he’ll only see rejection in your eyes. He’s a pathetic failure of a husband who has a decade’s worth of sins to make up for, and there’s no justification for him to selfishly to seek your absolution.
It comes anyway, in the form of soft hands pulling him forward.
“I’m here”, you say, pulling him into your embrace, letting him rest his heavy head in your lap.
He doesn’t allow himself to sink into your warmth. “Are you happier now? Are things better for you?”
“Yes”, he hears you say. The tension he’s been carrying around these few months lifts. “Thank you, Tetsuro. I appreciate it. I really do. You don’t have to work yourself to death - that’s never what I was asking for. If you’re tired -”
He shakes his head at your suggestion. He’s got a long way yet before he earns any reprieve.
“Tetsuro -”
He sits up abruptly, takes your hands in his.
“Promise you won’t leave me”, he pleads. “I know you’ve had to carry what must’ve felt like the weight of the entire world on your own, and I don’t have any excuse for that.”
“You don’t”, you agree.
He accepts the blow but he takes comfort that you don’t pull away. “I know that now. I know now how fucking hard it was to do it all alone.”
“It was hard. It was so, so hard, Tetsuro. I became numb to the pain. I don’t think I was functioning, I haven’t been for a while. For a long, long while.”
“I’m sorry”, his voice cracks.
“I know.”  You cup his face in your hands, offers him comfort he doesn’t deserve. “That’s a chapter of our marriage that’s past, that can’t be unwritten. But the past few months have been different. You’ve shown me that you’ve changed.”
The first glimmer of sunlight after a long, dark winter. Hope blooms with your smile.
“I think”, you say. “I think we can make this work again.”
He stares at you, dumbstruck. Then the fact that you’re giving him another chance dawns upon him, and he crashes forward to rest his head on your shoulder, unashamed to cry tears of relief.
“Thank you”, he exhales brokenly. “I won’t fuck this up again, I promise.”
You press a kiss to his forehead, curl up trustingly in his arms. “Don’t thank me”, you laugh. “Thank yourself for making me believe in you.”
He drinks up each drop of your affection, falls asleep in the cradle of your arms.
Tumblr media
“Is this what flirting is like?”
He wakes up to Aiko’s impertinent question, her hands on hips looking distinctly unimpressed at finding her parents asleep on the sofa, entwined together.
“Who taught you that word?” Kuroo asks, aghast that his ten year old daughter even recognises the existence of the opposite gender.
Aiko sticks her tongue at him, and he’s too distracted by Fumiko taking a flying leap onto the sofa with them, chattering a thousand miles an hour about what’s for breakfast and whether they can go to the zoo this afternoon - though he pins his suspicions on Bokuto’s trio of sons.
“Monsters”, he says. “Can’t even give your to-san a break to snuggle up to your pretty ka’san.”
The girls shriek in dismay - Aiko, at being a witness to further gross displays of affection between her parents, Fumiko, at being called a monster despite being a self-proclaimed princess. You prod at the soft flesh between his ribs.
“Don’t be mean”, you admonish him.
He sniffs, taking the chance to draw you closer. “I’m cranky in the mornings unless I get a morning kiss.”
You snort, swatting at him. “You make it sound as if kisses contain caffeine.”
The girls giggle, but he protests.
“Full of nonsense”, you tease, but you kiss him, again and again and again.
Tumblr media
Things settle into a steady, sustainable pace.
You refuse to allow him to bear the weight of the household on his back alone. There are frank conversations to be had about what each of you can realistically handle without burning out. He leads the charge in the mornings, whipping up breakfast with the aid of his two sous chefs, building an expertise in braiding and french twists that could possibly allow him to moonlight as a hairstylist. You, on the other hand, take charge of evening pick-ups, cooking dinners, supervising homework and art projects until he comes home and tags you out.
Chores are evenly split. He doesn’t allow you to assume the mental load of organising the household by yourself. “We both have a degree in business management”, he likes to remind you, because he now knows that remembering to run errands, scheduling appointments - all of this is work too.
You force him to take breaks. If you get to relax with your friends, so should he. “If you get too stressed, you’ll lose your hair and we can’t have that.” He yelps when he imagines himself bald and obediently complies when you call Kenma up, talk him into getting him and Bokuto and Akaashi (when he’s feeling less morose about his singlehood) to go for a round of pick up volleyball. “I’m glad you enjoyed yourself”, you note wryly when he returns home crowing about how he stuffed an Olympic player with a kill block.
“I did”, he replies, catching your hips to pull you in, cheekily ignoring your complaints that he’s sweaty. “But I enjoy coming home to you even more.”
“Gross”, you grumble, but you seem content to remain in his arms.
It’s another small moment he treasures. Life, he learns, is made of moments, both big and small. He’d made the mistake of only focusing on the big ones - graduation, playing at nationals, the day he was lucky enough to marry you, each of his daughter’s birthdays. Now, though, he cherishes each moment, each second he has with you and the girls, no matter how little, no matter how small.
He likes to come into the bathroom each night, leaning his elbow on the edge of the bathtub as you chat to him about your day, luxuriating in the bath he drew for you. You and he take turns to complain about life’s inconveniences as you clear emails once the girls have gone off to bed- colleagues who shirk their work, bosses who nitpick overmuch, washing everything down with steaming cups of herbal tea.
“Are you happy?”, he asks you, night after night.
“Mm”, you say with an impish grin. “I’d be happier if you let me put my toes on your calves.”
“They’re freezing”, he groans but scoots over anyway. “Better?”
“Much better”, you hum, content. “Life is good.”
Tumblr media
He’s not remiss in planning the big moments too.
A year passes quickly to your wedding anniversary. He packs your suitcase, books the train tickets and whisks you back to the ryokan in Hakone, though this time he upgrades you both to their largest suite. “I feel like a princess!” you exclaim, twirling about the room.
Your happiness is worth every yen he spent.
You spend the day strolling down avenues lined with cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji looming in the backdrop, the evening exchanging heated kisses in the private onsen he booked. You’re older now, with laughter lines creased into your forehead, grey streaks in your hair, but you’re still the same girl he fell in love with all those years ago.
“And you couldn’t wait ‘til we got back to our room?” you smack him.
He also loves how there’s fire burning bright in your eyes, the way it always used to. “You kissed me first!”
“You kissed me second!”
“I don’t hear you complaining”, he cackles.
You try to shush him, to no avail, as he draws the attention of everyone around him.
“What a happy couple”, an obaa-san remarks out loud. “They must be newlyweds.”
Well, she’s not wrong. You’re as radiant as you were fifteen years ago, his spring bride, but he’s an old man doddering on, hopefully with his edges sanded off with time. “Just your regular old, married couple”, he chortles when you’re safely back in the room.
“A happily married couple”, you reply, serenely sipping your tea. “That obaa-san definitely got that part right.”
There’s a lump in his throat that he can’t swallow. “Are you happy?” he manages to ask anyway.
“With you?” Your smile is warm, bright. Always.”
Both of you are doing alright.
