Okay I need to know if anyone else has noticed this or if it was just me.
Spoilers for The Most Beautiful Death in the World Musical
In the musical, it’s said that all the victims that they’ve found that Eric had killed and taken the souls from didn’t have a mark on their bodies, that they were more beautiful than they were in life. In the Druitt is in wonder after Eric kills his two “birdies” but yet they have no markings on them.
So why is it that all the people that Grelle killed with her scythe in the Red Butler arc are maimed and bloody and have marks on their bodies? Eric uses his scythe too, so is it just like an on/off feature that reapers have or is it just a plot device that I shouldn’t look too much into?
I send my time thinking about these things because I have nothing else to think about lol but, I wanna know what everyone else thinks.

hi i dont know anything about black butler who are those two guys you keep posting about
//sound of stone sliding against concrete
Let's ignore everything going on in actual Black Butler canon rn outside of the shinigami. <3
Those two guys are Alan Humphries and Eric Slingby, two musical-only characters in the second musical, "The Most Beautiful Death In The World"- a musical-only plot which focuses on our main characters, Ciel and Sebastian, investigating a series of mysterious "beautiful" deaths.
Meanwhile, the society of Shinigami (which is a more advanced, almost corporate setting in the midst of the 19th century the rest of the series takes place in) is thrown into an uproar over these mysterious deaths, as they're the ones in charge of "reviewing" the memories of the dying in the form of cinematic records (movie tapes), and claiming their souls with the use of their death scythes- specialized garden tools.
Tumblr media
At the time of this musical's release, there were only seven reapers revealed in the series- the five shown here, one OVA-only character, and another major character throughout all of Kuroshitsuji's media. So far, I think there's now at least eleven of them!
Anyway, Alan and Eric (the guy in the middle and the blonde right next to him).
Shinigami can't die, but Alan is inflicted with a strange illness known as the "Thorns of Death". While we don't get to see how this illness came to be and what exactly does it do besides weaken Alan and give him coughing fits, many of his co-workers are aware of his condition. There is no known cure for the Thorns of Death, so Alan has resigned himself to his eventual, lonely death.
Eric, who used to be his mentor, partners up with him to investigate the mysterious deaths, where they bump into the main cast and end up having to rest at their place after Alan's sickness interrupts a fight between him and Sebastian. Eventually, Sebastian finds out that Eric has been the culprit of the mysterious deaths, and Alan is betrayed as Eric won't tell him why.
After a bit of musical plot goes on, Alan finds out that Eric has been killing innocents to collect a thousand souls, as there is a myth that only a thousand souls can cure the Thorns of Death. Unwilling to allow Eric to continue down this path and unwilling to hand him over to the Shinigami society for punishment, the two remove their glasses together and run away- glasses are highly important in shinigami society, as all of them have poor eyesight, and its an essential part of their uniform.
Spoiler- they don't run very far. Sebastian battles with Eric, Eric tries to kill Ciel as the last soul, Alan protects Ciel from Eric's attack. Eric ends up killing Alan, collecting a thousand useless souls in the process. Eric later asks Sebastian to kill him, joining Alan in death and releasing all the souls he has collected.
As Alan dies, however, we see one of his memories with Eric, which was them talking about how lonely flowers called ericas aren't so lonely after all, for they bloom with others. Both the flower petals and the souls Eric collected are likened to snow, and become the titular "most beautiful death in the world". This is shown through their duet, Unmei!
I should also note that, while these two are musical-only, they've made cameos in the anime as silhouettes- or worse, in the manga, in such a LOVELY panel which talked about shinigami that tried to abandon the shinigami society. If I had any hope of them appearing in the manga. Well.
Tumblr media
ANYWAY SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE . I plan to post the theme song of the shinigami society from the musical (it is so silly and catchy I think you'll LOVE it) BUT !! HERE THEY ARE . DOOMED YAOI BLORBOS FROM MY MIDDLE SCHOOL FIXATIONS

❖ Requests: Closed ( not for long. I promise ;D )
❖ Currently, I only write for Hazbin Hotel. But I'm open for discussion on anything else on my list down below! I'm always looking for something new to watch/read, so if you have any recommendations, fire away!
❖ Series ; Current Hyperfixation: Hazbin Hotel
Anime : Naruto ; InuYasha ; Death Note ; Bleach ; Hellsing ; Soul Eater ; Fruits Basket ; D.Gray-Man [ Original / Hallow ] ; Kuroshitsuji ; Katekyo Hitman Reborn ; Ao No Exorcist ; Full Metal Alchemist ; One Piece* ; Shingeki No Kyojin ; Kimetsu No Yaiba ; Jujutsu Kaisen**
* Still trying to catch up. This is a massive anime, and I've spent the better half of this past year trying to watch it all. I've made it to the Raid on Onigashima, the part where Yamato got his bracelets removed. Love him, by the way! <3
** Nanaminnnn~! I am not okay about anything with this man. <3
Manga / Manhwa : Everything mentioned above ; Noblesse
TV : Hazbin Hotel ; Game Of Thrones ; Vikings ; Avatar: The Last Airbender ; The Legend Of Korra ; Supernatural
Books : A Song Of Ice & Fire
Video Games : Final Fantasy Series + Individual Prequels, Sequels, Movies, Remakes* [ 7 / 9 / 10 / 13 / 15** ] ; Tales Of Series [ Legendia / Zestiria / Berseria / Arise ] ; Devil May Cry Series ; Kingdom Hearts Series*** ; Star Ocean Series [ Till The End Of Time / The Divine Force ] ; The Legend Of Zelda [ A Link To The Past ] ; Sonic Series ; Spyro Series ; Shining Force Series [ 1 / 2 ] ; Lufia Series [ Fortress Of Doom / Rise Of The Sinistrals ] ; Diablo 3 ; Lunar [ Silver Star Story Complete ] ; Infinite Undiscovery ; to be updated as I remember / play.
* So far, I've only played the first installment of Final Fantasy 7 Remake because I currently do not own a PS5, but I'm working on it. The Compilation of Final Fantasy 7 is my absolute favorite series of all time. I could watch Advent Children ( original and complete ) on repeat, and I've played the original release so many times that I don't even need a guide to get a 100% on a brand new save ( Obsessed much? Yup ). I'm a completionist at heart, and this game is amazing and it provides a massive sense of nostalgia for me.
** SLIGHT SPOILER (maybe? You've been warned) Another amazing installment in the Final Fantasy series, this game is so well written in my opinion. It stays away from the bigger cliches you see in most RPGs ( eg : the guy gets the girl, friendship is the key to saving the world, etc. ), the characters are so individually complex, the villain technically wins and reminds you how easy it would be for you to become the same type of monster. Plus badass women that fix your car, lights up entire cities, wakes up the fucking Gods to fight on your side, takes the entire mercenary army they led and defects to your side? IN HEELS? YES PLEASE. It has one of the best enemy turned ally characters in the FF series; I'm just disappointed we didn't get to see much of Aranea after everything in Tenebrae. Also Ardyn has some serious daddy vibes, and I would literally give my left tit just to lick Aranea's boot ( oh, the things I would do to these two, phew~ ).
*** Let's be real here. The Kingdom Hearts Series makes zero sense if you didn't play all of them and you didn't pay attention to each and every detail, and I did neither. I played 2 and 3 when they originally came out, but in my defense: it doesn't look like a series that follows a singular story, something that I did not know at the time, and usually the series I play have an entirely different story per installment ( eg : Final Fantasy and Tales Of ). I tried to piece together the story from online synopses and second hand game play ( I watched someone else play ), and it just didn't work out. So, suffice to say, my knowledge of Kingdom Hearts goes about as far as basic facts regarding Organization XIII because they were my whole reason for trying the games in the first place. I'm still open to discussion about it, though! Just keep in mind my side will be very limited. Sorry!
To Be Read / Watched / Played : Helluva Boss ; Phantasy Star Series ; Final Fantasy Series [ 1-6 / 8 / 11-12 / 14 / 16 ] ; Diablo 4 ; Black Clover ; Hell's Paradise ; Fairy Tale ; The Seven Deadly Sins

3 THINGS YANA TOBOSO IS HIDING FROM YOU {KIND OF}
1. THE EYES OF JOHN BROWN
Tumblr media
This guy is always seen wearing these glasses. I mean ALWAYS. The most popular theory is that he's actually a Shinigami. It makes me wonder if Sebastian is suspicious of him if that's the case, since he knows now that Shinigami have recognizable yellow-green eyes. But, there's another theory that it's my favorite that John Brown is actually an angel or a devil. Or, it could be that John Brown is actually someone we know and he's hiding his real identity.
Also, doesn't Angela Blanc from the anime look so much like John Brown?
Tumblr media
2. UNDERTAKER'S HEART
Tumblr media
I know it's a silly one, but hear me out. I always think about what Sensei Toboso is hiding from us in plain sight, and this mysterious chapter has many mysteries. This picture makes me think that there's some unusual scar at the heart of Undertaker. Remember "The most beautiful death in the world." Maybe these scars are actually memories of other people who have attacked Undertaker, and they are about to attack his heart, and the only way to prevent that from happening is if he laughs a lot. Just a crack theory, but it makes me wonder. Doesn't it look like it's pointing towards the heart?
Tumblr media
Let's not forget when Yana Toboso hid that Undertaker saved the picture of Vincent from the chandelier:
Tumblr media
3. SHINIGAMI REALM
I wonder where is the Shinigami realm? Is it an alternative reality? We know that Hell and Heaven exist in the Kuroshitsuji world, so is the Shinigami realm some kind of Purgatory? We know that they communicate with each other with pigeons.
Tumblr media
And, it seems that these pigeons are special, and even Sebastian notices that.
Tumblr media
P.S. I'm not feeling my best mentally, so please be kind :)

Hi Katrin! In reference to your previous ask about Ciels final smile of Kuroshitsuji 1, I just have to ask - why do you think Ciel is unhappy in his final moments?
I think I mentioned it a long while back in an ask I sent you (where I just dumped my ramblings about book of murder in your inbox - once again, sorry about that!) but Sebastian leaving Ciel in Paris didn't feel like a rejection to me.
Of course he senses the doubts Ciel clearly has about throwing his life away and I think misunderstands it. I don't think Ciel was second-guessing his revenge, but perhaps his readiness to die.
When Sebastian leaves him, he doesn't seem angry - that much is clear. Instead, he wishes him to "forget everything and have pleasant dreams", with a rather wistful expression on his face. And what this line ends up reading as is a bittersweet goodbye from the demon - an offering for Ciel to let go of his revenge and find happiness in the afterlife with his now soon approaching death.
I think he is disappointed because at some point he started to stop holding Ciel to human standards as he would everything else, but I also don't think he's resentful of it. Ciel is human and he can't keep expecting him not to be, so it was perhaps his fault for doing so.
Not wanting to die doesn't seem like something that would suddenly make Ciel's soul undesirable to Sebastian, so there must be another reason for him to let it go. He cannot offer Ciel life, since he knows that death is readily approaching him, but he can offer him an afterlife.
This offering almost acts as a thank you for the moments of excitement their contract had given his monotone life and I believe that is why he makes it.
He sticks around to see if Ciel accepts his offer, though already expecting him to, and is there to witness the very moment the boy rejects it. Gone is the uncertainty of Abberline's death and the Paris crisis, and Ciel, the Earl of Phantomhive, returns to him - sharper, colder, more ruthless than ever. Sebastian realises his misjudgement and returns to his side, ready for the final battle. Killing an angel. It's laughably symbolic.
I think it is at some point during this battle that Ciel fully acknowledges his feelings towards Sebastian. I completely agree with you - completing his revenge did not fulfil him. I don't think he felt victorious or triumphant from it, or even the satisfaction he might have expected from it. Like you said, he probably realises how wasted his life was in pursuing such a fate, but still understands that it was the only path he would've accepted, being who he was.
But that isn't to say he was unhappy. Just because it wasn't revenge that gave him fulfilment doesn't mean he didn't find it elsewhere. The smile he gives Sebastian doesn't read to me as bitter or condescending, but actually seems quite peaceful. And the reason for that, I think, is that he doesn't fear dying by Sebastian's hand.
Those same reddened eyes and fanged smile would be the last thing he sees – and was that really such a bad way to go? He knew how and when and by whose hands he was going to die, and not everyone could say the same. What's more, at this point, I'm pretty sure he would've realised what he was feeling for Sebastian, so I don't think he would be resentful for dying at the hands of someone he loved.
Sebastian, for him, had always represented the end. And a beautiful end at that. That's why the smile seemed peaceful to me.
He lets go of the bridge. Initially, I assumed it was a mixture of blood loss and a symbolic decision to let go of life and surrender himself to Sebastian, but from your analysis I actually think your idea about him wanting a final act of rebellion is wonderful. All Ciel really wanted was to be remembered by Sebastian, so why not send him one last gift? Let him have one last surprise before it's all over. Die on his own terms - it's a beautiful idea.
He dies in mid-air. We see the exact moment Ciel Phantomhive dies and exact moment his cinematic record blossoms from his lifeless body when the blood loss finally takes him.
It's a beautiful scene, regardless of how you analyse it and I absolutely love hearing everyone's interpretations of it since they're all so different from one another. Reading your analysis in this ask was particularly wonderful to me because it was such a different take from what I was used to. I tjust hought I'd share my view on the scene so I could hear more of your thoughts on the matter. Whether it's in literature or media, watching how the tone of a scene can change as the angle from which it is interpreted switches is perhaps one of the most interesting things you can do.
(My post about Sebastian leaving Ciel in S1 & London Bridge scene for those who are interested).
Thank you for this, I really love your asks, comments, and thoughts! I agree that Sebastian leaving Ciel in S1 wasn't a rejection - I think he was resentful to an extent (he sends Ciel several very dark looks when Ciel stops him from killing the Queen and when they are riding to the hotel), and personally, I see a mix of feelings when he's watching Ciel from afar later. He's quiet and thoughtful, and I think there is a storm of conflicting feelings brewing inside him. I particularly love your words about Sebastian being willing to give Ciel an afterlife.
As for how Ciel takes it... I think he's grimly determined to see everything through. I agree that he fully acknowledges his feelings for Sebastian at this point; I also think Ciel realizes he loves him at the very end of S1, seconds before Sebastian leans closer to take his soul. I imagine the entire life flashing right before Ciel's eyes, his adrenaline spreading through him chaotically and clearing his head in a way he's never experienced before. His reservations, stubbornness, reluctance to succumb to emotions - it's all going to lose its meaning because this is it. In a few seconds, he won't just be dead - he won't exist. I think Ciel is going to see everything with startling clarity, and he'll realize, "Oh. I love you," but of course he won't say it aloud.
I agree Ciel sees the beauty and the peace in being consumed by Sebastian, but at the same time, I see misery in him in those later moments. Sorry, I can't share gifs or even good pics right now, but here are some screens to illustrate what I mean:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think he looks like in his darkest and saddest moments here. There is sorrow, bitterness, hopelessness in his eyes - he won, but it doesn't feel like it. Ciel always knew he was going to die and Sebastian was going to devour his soul, but now he is being proven right, it is finally happening, and I think he has mixed feelings on this. During their time together, he learned to enjoy life in his way. He enjoyed their games, being challenged, solving puzzles. He always knew it's temporary, but knowing and seeing it are two different things, and I don't think Ciel is as willing to die as he was before. The way he's startled when the Undertaker tell him he's going to die anyway even without Sebastian in the picture, Ciel's sudden burst of emotion when he tells Abberline that he had forfeited his future, his behavior afterward, how he was delaying the conclusion of their contract by holding Sebastian back - I think Ciel was re-assessing things.
Tumblr media
This one breaks my heart in particular. In this specific moment, I don't think Ciel doesn't want to die in general, but he doesn't want to leave Sebastian. He's staring at him with emotions he never allowed himself to feel - he's ready, but he's wistful. He wishes things could have been different in some other world, that his book could have another ending, but he knows there is no place for what ifs in his life.

Hi!
To begin with, I wanted to thank you for this fantastic blog of yours, I LOVE it, your posts are always awesome (especially when it comes to Kuroshitsuji) and interesting, and your theories often echo mines! 🥰
Then, I recently read your post about the similarity between the Earl Cain series and Black Butler and so I saw that you (more or less) support the theory that Undertaker could be Cedric K. Ros-(?) who was Cloudia/Claudia's husband (and Vincent's father etc.).
I must confess that I was never really into this theory as I rather consider the reason Undertaker is so enamoured by the Phantomhives is because 50 years ago, he fell in love with Claudia (and perhaps she loved him back) but unable to save her from death, he became obsessed with reviving dead people.
But anyway, after reading your post I was pretty puzzled and searched around to see what things could point into the direction of "Undertaker is Vincent", but couldn't find anything particularly convincing. At some point even, the theory is supported because of some guy holding a bloody/dead Vincent-looking man in his arms (Volume 22, Chapter 105, page 11), however it was proven that these two people were actually Alan Humphries and Eric Slingby, two original shinigami that Yana-san created for the musical Kuroshitsuji: The most beautiful DEATH in the world and who became canon in the manga. So, my question finally 😅 is that I wanted to know YOUR points to support the Undertaker/Vincent theory.
Thank you very much for the answer, your blog (again!) and all the work you do for it every time! (And sorry for the long ask 😂)
Thank you. I’m glad you are enjoying my blog.
Please see my posts about Undertaker likely being Cedric. I’ve blogged about it countless times, including reblogs of others who provided good evidence to support it. Use the tags below to find the vast majority of those posts. You can also just use this link to the Tagging Masterpost and click the link for Undertaker’s identity. I strongly suggest that anyone who wants to ask me theory questions checks out that tagging masterpost. That’s why it’s also linked in my pinned post.
But I will address a few specific things you mentioned.
You think he might have fallen in love with Cloudia/Claudia 50 years prior to the current time? It’s 1889 now, so 50 years ago was 1839. She was born in 1830. Unless Undertaker turns out to be an unforgivable pedophile, he didn’t fall in love with a 9 year old girl. And she didn’t fall in love with some weird dude when she was 9. She didn’t have Vincent until she was 21, and she died in 1866 at the age of 36.
Besides, he tried to destroy the reaper organization’s HQ around 20 years earlier than 50 years ago, which would put that event at about 1819. And there’s reason to believe his initial experiments with corpses and cinematic records started around that time, roughly 70 years ago. He said it started out as mere curiosity about humans, life, and death. It wasn’t until the attack on Phantomhive Manor that he started making the really advanced “dolls”, like real Ciel, Polaris, etc.
I’ve never said Cedric was Cloudia/Claudia’s husband, in fact I’ve said several times that I don’t think she married. She was born into the Phantomhive family and was probably expected to keep that name, thanks to her watchdog duties. Perhaps Queen Victoria even hoped the Phantomhive name would die with her. But she had children by a man she probably never married. The children got her surname instead of their father’s. This continued the Phantomhive name and, if their father is more than human, perhaps these kids would be “stronger” (in some way) than the previous generations.
I don’t know why people get so confused looking at the Phantomhive family tree. It only shows the direct lines (so Frances isn’t shown there, even though we know she’s Vincent’s full sibling; Yana-san confirmed this in a tweet years ago). It doesn’t actually show who is married to whom, unless the married couple is also the biological parents of the children. It does, however, show who the biological parents are, even if they never married each other.
I’ve never heard or read anyone claiming that the reapers shown in ch105 were anyone other than Eric Slingby and Alan Humphries. At least not anyone being serious. So 😆! Of course that’s not Vincent. And there’s no rational Undertaker = Vincent theory. None.
Undertaker became a reaper a long time ago, probably a few (maybe even several) hundred years ago. Vincent was born in 1851 and died in 1885, at the age of 34. The reaper records of births and deaths are likely to be true. Which brings us to Cedric’s birth and death dates. There’s a darn good reason why we can see the days and months but not the years. The years are not even going to be in the 1800’s. Not if Cedric is Undertaker. My best guess, so far, is he died before 1366. He could have been a regular human as early as ~1200. 😊 (Please see the posts about Ivanhoe and Cedric of Rotherwood for why I think it could go back that far. And please see my posts about 136649 to see why I think he died before 1366.)
Sorry, but I have nothing to say about Undertaker being Vincent, other than that’s hogwash. They’ve even worked together and been in the same room together.
And I have every reason to believe that Undertaker is Cedric — Vincent’s and Frances’ biological father. My previous posts and reblogs on the subject should speak for themselves.
However, feel free to ask specific questions about those posts, if something isn’t clear. Sometimes it is clear in my head but doesn’t always come across that way.

Black Butler Shinigami & Thorns of Death speculation ramble
Major musical spoilers!!! Read at your own risk! I recommend watching Kuromyu 2, the most beautiful death in the world before reading uwu
Okay so we know that to become a shinigami, a human must take their own life and in return they shall return as a shinigami as punishment. They also do not remember their past life, so they probably do know that they commited suicide, but they don’t know why. They also “work” until the day they are forgiven, but isn’t specified when or how they reach that point.
Shinigami’s work by reaping and collecting human souls and that they cannot interfere once the name is on the list. A human can have their life spared if the human is someone “ who has potential to be beneficial for this world “, which is rare according to the official wiki.
It is said that the thorns of death is caused by a soul of a human that is destined to die, but fight’s back against the shinigami. If that was the case, shouldn’t there be more shinigami’s who have the thorns? I doubt there are very few humans that accept death that peacefully and lets the shinigami do their thing.
William should have the thorns as well seeing that Thomas fought back against him during his first reap. it was also the only time we ever saw emotion out of that man. If anything, I’d reckon that most of the shinigami’s have the thorns of death.
In the second Black Butler musical we follow Alan Humphries and Eric Slingby. For those who haven’t watched it yet I don’t want to spoil, but the gist of it is that Alan has the thorns of death, and Eric is stealing human souls to try and save Alan (cue crying noises). A thousand human souls to be exact.
Speculation #1 : The Thorns of Death isn’t from souls fighting back, but rather the Shinigami showing compassion/emotions and/or second thoughts about reaping the soul. The Thorn’s are also not lethal. It is also not a disease or illness.
This is kind of a well known speculation but I wanted to put my thoughts into writing. We know that suicide is what makes a human a shinigami. Wouldn’t it make sense that they would be punished if they showed compassion or kindness to someone who is destined to die?
They were not kind to themselves, for whatever reason they took their own life and they were reborn as Shinigami. So if we play by the idea that their punishment for committing suicide as humans is to take human life, it would be ironic that they now feel or have second thoughts about taking it.
Their last act as a human is take their own lives, and in death they shall do it infinitely.
This brings us to the emotions part. We know that William is all about work. He is robotic in a way, emotionless and numb to everything as long as it doesn’t interfere with his work. As mentioned above the only time we ever see William show emotion is during his first reap, where Thomas essentially fought back, not wanting to die. Since then the William we know and love was born.
“If only I could understand their pain a little better”
“Thinking you could understand another’s feelings as they face death is sheer arrogance”
“Though I’ll never fully understand other’s thoughts as they await death, I feel I’ve gotten a bit closer”
"I was born alone in this world and alone I will die. If this is my fate, why are tears coming out of my eyes?"
- Alan Humphries, Kuroshitsuji Musical, The Most Beautiful Death in the World
Alan in and of himself is filled with emotions. He is empathetic and wants to understand feelings and emotions of the very people he is taking lives from. To the souls he reaps, he is death. Just as he took his own life, he also faced death. I think he feels the need to understand what they are feeling, whether it’s because he wonders deep inside how he felt when he died, or because he is just a pure and kind soul. (We do not know how Alan died, his Death Scythe is a long handled garden slasher and no other distinct qualities or sign as to how he died)
Shinigami will spend eternities watching cinematic records, observing human life, and death. It would make sense that a shinigami wouldn’t care if they took human lives, it’s just their jobs.
Ronald Knox has emotions, he flirts, he is playful and occasionally seen with human women and interacting with them. But he does not care about their lives. As seen in the Book of Atlantic he bids the human woman he was with goodbye, ending it with “if you’re still alive”, which he probably already knows that she does not survive. So it’s entirely possible for a Shinigami to display emotions and a personality, as long as it does not interfere with their job of reaping.
For this speculation emotions is what causes the thorns. And it can be stopped if the Shinigami stopped having feelings or empathy for the human souls they reap.
William for example, it would make sense that he is entirely void of emotions. If this speculation is right, then he would have the thorns from Thomas, which if he continued to feel or think about, would eventually kill him. If he did the same thing with every soul he reaped, he will die even faster. Getting rid of emotions would essentially get rid of/ not have the thorns, hence surviving.
Either way, William may or may not have eradicated the thorns, but if he stopped it early enough I don’t think a small amount of thorns would be lethal. He may still feel the prick or pain of it, but it will not lead to his death.
Alan on the other hand is portrayed naturally empathetic, he is filled to the brim with emotions and thoughts about the souls he reaps, and as long as he continues it, the thorns will only sink deeper.
In my opinion it’s more of a consequence than an illness if we go by this speculation and it is entirely avoidable. After all, they took their own life selfishly, it is now their punishment to take others, but now they hesitate? Or feel for the humans? It’s a baffling concept considering it goes against their whole existence.
Shinigami’s are the neutral ones. They hold no opinion over the life or death, they just take. So for them to not be neutral, if would still make sense that they get the thorns as punishment/consequence.
Speculation #2: A thousand stolen human souls is needed to “cure” the thorns, but why?
Let’s say that there is no other way to get rid of the thorns. Once you have it, there’s no stopping it. (We’ll forget about William’s case and focus on Alan)
In the musical we see Eric taking the souls for himself to collect and eventually give to Alan. He goes out of his way to make a whole opera play to garner enough humans to take souls from.
But why would this work?
Selfishness. This ties back to why the thorns were there in the first place.
Feeling or trying to understand human pain or emotions is what gave them the thorns, so if a shinigami would take so much lives so selfishly, so greedily, to save themselves, it would negate the thorns that they acquired.
Having no regard for human life would most likely get rid of the thorns purely because it contradicts the thorns presence in a shinigami.
But isn’t taking human souls for themselves against the rules? Why, yes, yes it is.
Which is why Eric was sneaking around doing it. He only formulated the mass soul reaping when he realized that Alan does not have much time left, and he needed the souls immediately to save him.
Let’s talk about Eric Slingby for a moment.
“And yet somehow.. somehow I have finally found... one fragile ray of light.
“Forgive me Alan, I can’t give you up. I just can’t give you or your life up!”
-Eric Slingby, Kuroshitsuji Musical, The Most Beautiful Death in the World
We talked about how having emotions or feeling empathetic towards humans cause, thorns. But it doesn’t seem to apply to shinigami relationships.
Eric is literally intervening with Alan’s eventual death by collecting the souls, so do the rules of being neutral not apply to them? Are they free to save each other?
I don’t really see a problem with this, I can kind of see that it might not be included in the rules since well, they aren’t human, and it just makes the story even more heart-wrenching.
Eric also has emotions and a personality, and even though he doesn’t understand why Alan is feeling the way he does when it comes to human emotions towards death, he still sees him as a friend and wants to save him. It just goes to show that even shinigamis can have healthy relationships. (cri)
Okay we’re back. During the musical Alan learned that it was Eric who was taking the human souls to save him, and he immediately tries to stop Eric. They have a bittersweet moment and decide to run away together and Eric promising not to kill anymore to get souls, and they leave their glasses behind, signing their resignation.
But the thorns didn’t stop. And eventually Alan is on the verge of death, and Eric breaks his promise, he wanted to save Alan no matter the cost. Eventually Eric needed one more soul to complete the task, and the only human left that he could kill quickly was no other than Ciel Phanthomhive. But  just as he was about to kill Ciel, Alan dived in between, Eric’s death scythe killing him.
Eric was devastated, and begs Sebastian to kill him which he does with Alan’s death scythe. Everything he had done was to not lose Alan, but in the end fate was cruel to them. As the very thing he wanted to protect disappeared by his own actions, he essentially killed himself once more by asking Sebastian to take his life.
He lied beside Alan, in his second time tasting death for himself, at least in death they were still together.
The souls he collected erupted from his body and rained down on the ground, Ciel and Sebastian musing that the souls were beautiful, white, and pure, it was innocent. It was the most beautiful death in the world.
So what would happen if Alan didn’t take the souls? Would Eric just have 1000 souls with him? Would he return the souls to the dispatch center? Would they be fired? I don’t know really, but all I can most likely assume is that everything Eric did to get the souls would be useless and for naught. Alan I think would have died either way, he would never have taken the souls.
I can see Alan and Eric still alive and happy together if they ran away earlier and the thorns weren’t as bad.
Another ending would be Eric letting Alan die per his wish, and Eric turning into an emotionless void like William from the sad event. I can see Eric getting the thorns for himself as he would probably remember Alan whenever he takes a human soul, and the guilt of not saving him would also probably eat him alive. A lose-lose situation.
Even another one would be Alan surviving if speculation #1 was true, but then he would also be emotionless and unfeeling, unless he figured out how to exclusively not feel for the humans and their souls, but that’s a far fetch, I just don’t see Alan doing that. And even if it did happen, I'm quite sure Alan and Eric's dynamic would change and it wont be the same. Also a lose-lose situation.
It’s a bitterweet ending for Alan and Eric, I can only cry and curse at the world so much for giving them such fates.
I guess that’s what fanart and fanfiction is for amiright?
If you read everything and got to this point, wow, don’t you have a life? Just kidding. I hope you enjoyed and let me know your thoughts if you like.
I might write more of these if I find more stuff I feel like is interesting, or people can give suggest stuff through dm’s or messaging.
Stay safe, healthy, and hydrated!
Much love, Ames

Fic Questionnaire
@ford-ye-fiji tagged me to do this; thank you. ^_^
How many works do you have on AO3? 106
What's your total AO3 word count? 395,897
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? 27 fandoms, though for most of them it’s only like one or two. They are Akatsuki no Yona, Bungou Stray Dogs, My Hero Academia, Hunter x Hunter, Tales of Zestiria, Tales of Berseria, Tales of Graces, Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Xillia, Tales of Hearts, Tales of the Rays, Professor Layton, Noragami, Pandora Hearts, Dai Gyakuten Saiban, A Series of Unfortunate Events, RWBY, Tangled the series, Doki Doki Literature Club, Ori and the Blind Forest, Vanitas no Carte, Genshin Impact, Kiznaiver, Boku dake ga Inai Machi, Kuroshitsuji, Ai the Somnium Files, and Charlotte.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos? “Pictures, Posters, and Tender Beauty”, “Plus Est En Vous”, “My Reason”,  “I Am Here, Too”, and “A Bandage for my Scars, and your Heart” ...Not surprised that four out of five of those are MHA fics, but I will never understand how that Tangled the series one I did got so insanely popular..... maybe because the show director himself acknowledged it. 0_0
Do you respond to comments, why or why not? I try to, though I have to shamefully admit I pick and choose which ones I respond to. I appreciate every comment I get, of course, every writer does, but idk, I just feel like a broken record responding to all similar shorter comments with “Thank you so much!!! I’m so happy you liked it <3″ or something like that... Is that cruel of me? >_> I also feel weird responding to comments on my super old stuff, because aside from a few exceptions, I don’t really like most of my old fics anymore alkgklflkkl and I barely remember them enough to be able to give a reasonable response to comments on those. Instead I just put all my energy into responding to longer, more detailed comments, because with those I actually have more to work with to say back... But again, I love all my comments!! I’m really sorry if I don’t respond to your comment, it doesn’t mean I’m not grateful, I just don’t know what to say back OTL
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending? Haaaah, there are a few, but proooobably the most angsty ending would be in “Smile, and maybe tomorrow, you’ll see the sun.” Since the thing is basically 12k words of agonizingly drawn-out All Might death... :’) Though I meant for the actual ending to be somewhat hopeful/bittersweet? and I surely have other ones that have more painful endings... But that’s the obvious one that comes to mind, since I’ve had multiple people yell at me for it. :)
Have you ever received hate on a fic? I can’t remember any instances of outright hate, but I’ve gotten some... odd comments every once in a while... Or just some annoying criticism that the person didn’t intend to be mean about, I don’t think, but that realllly wasn’t warranted. These comments are very rare though.
Do you write smut? If so what kind? Noooo way in hell lol
Have you ever had a fic stolen? ....I mean, not that I know of!
Have you ever had a fic translated? Yeah, I think I had at least one someone asked to translate into Russian, although they put it on FF.net lol
Have you ever co-written a fic before? No... I really want to though. Multiple friends and I have planned different ones, but we haven’t gotten around to doing any of them yet because I’m into different fandoms atm and also dealing with health problems that distract me.... My ex-friend and I had a major one that was in the planning stages, but then she stopped being my friend so it never got off the ground. :’) I’m still upset about that...
What's your all time favorite ship? Mmmmm that’s hard; I don’t ship that much at all, so although I have a few favorite ships, one in particular doesn’t really stand out to me as my hardcore OTP.... Buuut I guess I would say Snow/Serah from FFXIII; I love ff13 so much, it’s so special to me, and those two are just the absolute sweetest and the heart and soul of the game 🥺❤️ I haven’t written anything for them or ff13 in general, but maybe someday.
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will? I only ever have one WIP at a time, so..... Hopefully not my current long one, I am constantly trying to slap myself for thinking, intimidated as I am by it with all my ideas for it and all the research I need to do. :’)
What are your writing strengths? I think I’m really good at writing characters’ emotions... the emotions they show, and everything they’re feeling internally. I really like the stream-of-consciousness style of internal monologue I’ve started using within the last few years; I think it’s very... cathartic? In general I just think I’m good at writing softness, cause I definitely feel the soft feels rereading my stuff lol
What are your writing weaknesses? Motivation.... starting a writing session and not getting distracted.... ADHD.... what do I do. :’) Although I just said I like that stream-of-consciousness style I use, I often feel like I use it too much, or things get redundant, and too wordy and overwhelming, bah..... I’m also shit at just.... knowing things, like worldbuilding, but like, real-world stuff that everyone knows, but I’ve been living under a rock my whole life and not done a lot of things that are normal for most other people, so I struggle with that in my writing, which is why all my fics not-so-subtly eek around mentioning things like food and irl places and so much else, haaah.... now I’m got myself writing 1800s Victorian London; someone save me
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? Ehhhh only do it veryyyy sparingly, like when a character is startled and might briefly revert to their native language, or something similar. I just did that in one of my recent fics, actually, and looked up a few Russian words, being super anal about getting it right.... and I still got a comment correcting my Russian, even though it was only like 3 words in the entire thing, with nothing else to say about the rest of the fic... it was a little frustrating :’)
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for? Akatsuki no Yona/Yona of the Dawn. That was the first series that really got me into fandom and making online friends, and gave me the courage to try writing fics; I’m so grateful to it for that, and it still remains one of my favorite mangas <3 Ah, to be able to pump out fics as easily and quickly as I did back then...
What's your favorite fic you've ever written? I think it’s still “Manufactured Hearts, Real Happiness”, the sole Tales of the Abyss fic I’ve written. TotA is my favorite game of all time, and I wrote this for a Tales big bang that happened a while back; it turned out much longer than I ever anticipated, one of my longest fics to date, and pretty much exactly how I wanted it to be, which is always the best feeling... I was so happy to feel like I did my favorite game justice. :’) Now.... my dream is for my current WIP to become my new favorite, if I can pull it off right; we’ll see :’)
Uhhhh I’ll tag @sixtyfourk , @cenally , @arcane-palm , @kyoukalay , @magicmetslogic , and @evevoli03 , if any of you want to do this~

I'm not in the Black Butler fandom but I've heard an account on this site say the creator(?) Of black butler is a pedophile and homophobic. I'm not sure if it's true or not though. They might just be trying to make the fandom look bad.
Dear Anon,
What makes this fandom look bad is the fandom itself. I am not sure about other fandoms, but the Kuroshitsuji fandom for one is filled with self-righteous, compulsive liars who make up ‘facts’ to legitimise their own ideas.
To answer your question; no, to the best of our knowledge Toboso Yana is NOT a confirmed pedophile, nor homophobic. Of course one might make a case out of how eroticising and fetishising children or homoromanticism/sexuality is a form of pedophilia/homophobia, but that’s an altogether different can of worms which I refuse to touch.
Lending your ask as opportunity, allow me to compose a small FAQ here.
Tumblr media
Kuroshitsuji FAQ
Tumblr media
1. Was Kuroshitsuji supposed to be a yaoi?
No. The short version of the answer is as such:
Square Enix does not publish any yaoi or explicit content.
Yana already had her own yaoi/BL associated artist name Yanao Rock. It would be very foolish to start a BL-themed manga using her official artist name Toboso Yana which she is trying to keep separate from Yanao Rock.
The rumour of Kuroshitsuji supposed to have been BL only exists in the Western fandom.
The detailed answer can be found here, here and here.
Tumblr media
2. Is Sebaciel canon?
No. For the purpose of marketing Yana has neither confirmed nor denied the truth of this statement, because it obviously sells. But if you study the interaction between the characters, it is clear as day that they would not be romantically interested in one another, because 1. Sebastian does not like slavery, or enjoy dating cattle, and 2. O!Ciel is too traumatised. When push came to shove (in the Emerald Witch Arc) he would not even let Sebas near him.
A thorough analysis of their relationship can be found in this post.
Although Yana has said nothing, Editor K, the second highest authority on this series, has confirmed that there is no affection between master and servant.
Tumblr media
“【The foundation of Kuroshitsji no. 16】 The butler is a demon and   competent and loyal. However, there is no affection for his   master. [Sebastian] supports his master in his revenge as a butler, but the nature of the contract is one where he will eat the soul after the completion [of the revenge]. The contract is the only reason [Sebastian]  works so hard, he is a perverted gourmet. #Kuroshitsuji”
Tumblr media
3. Is it alright to ship Sebaciel because Yana’s material endorses it?
Does Yana’s material casually portraying murder make murder less severe a problem?
An author is human too, even IF an author thinks of something as acceptable, we as readers need to consider what is right or wrong. Most classic literature/media actively promote sexism, racism, etc.; but it does not mean we should follow those ideas. “[Person] does it, so I can do it too” is Trump’s or a 5 year old’s argumentation style.
Tumblr media
4. Is Grell Sutcliff a man or a woman?
Grell Sutcliff is a transgender woman. Besides Grell’s own claims, Yana herself too has confirmed her statement in text.
Tumblr media
“Ah, but this time after the completion of the script, I had a request to Grell’s actor Mr. Uehara. “Could you please [play her] as a strong woman”, I said (laughs) In the original comics, Grell does not make an appearance between the Red Butler Arc and the Luxury Liner Arc, and therefore people often think she is useless at her job. So I asked [Mr. Uehara] to please portray her as a career woman in front of her kouhai (younger colleague, aka Ronald)” 【Toboso】
Here is an entire Masterpost on gender in Kuroshitsuji, and here a detailed history of how Yana has been owning up for her mistake of portraying Grell in a problematic manner.
Tumblr media
4.5 Did Yana not say Grell is male?
Yana has never said and meant that Grell is a man.
Tumblr media
Yana did write on her old blog: “yes, Grell is a man, but has the heart of a maiden” (Toboso, 2010).  That however, was the lack of accurate terminology in Japanese for a transgender woman from a decade ago. Transgender studies have developed entirely differently than within Euro-American discourse. As such, holding Yana’s words from 10 years ago accountable as accurate NOW in the English speaking community would be Euro-Americentrist at best.
Tumblr media
5. Is O!Ciel’s real name Astre/Noel/Merde?
No, Yana has confirmed that none of the three main characters’ names (Sebastian, O!Ciel and Undertaker) have been revealed yet. And indeed, Undertaker’s name is therefore also not ‘Adrian Crevan’ as has been claimed often times.
Tumblr media
6. Is the anime canon?
No, the only part Yana had in the anime were the first few episodes of the first season that were directly based on her manga, and the visual designs of some characters. Yana herself does not even seem to like the anime, let alone consider it ‘part of her canon’. Besides, the anime actively DEFIES her canon.
Click here and here for more details.
Tumblr media
7. Is the second musical ‘the Most Beautiful Death in the World’ canon?
No, just like the anime, the only part Yana played in this musical is the visual designs of the characters. The characters however, are written by the Kuromyu creative team.
Tumblr media
“RT @toboso_official: When I was watching kuromyu・A Thousand Souls, I really thought: “Eric and Alan are characters I could never have created from scratch…” (No offense meant!) I was responsible for the visual designs, but the characters were born from the writing by Ms. Okada, the directing by Fukuyama-sensei, and finally, by the actors.”【Toboso】
Click here for the mini masterpost on this musical, and to understand how this musical is homophobic, transphobic, pedophilic on top of defying Yana’s canon.
Tumblr media
If there are other things that would belong on this FAQ list, feel free to let me know! I hope this helps.
BUT HONESTLY PEOPLE; STOP MAKING UP CLAIMS!!!!!!!! Sometimes we just don’t know things, and it is alright! If your theory does not have confirmation (yet) or is actively defied, WELL, SUCK IT UP!

Hey hello, I have no idea who Eric and Alan are (from the musical I guess) and I know nothing about your oc, so could you please write something for them? I'm curious.
yes, Eric and Alan are from the second (second?? I think second) Kuroshitsuji musical, The Most Beautiful DEATH in the World! the musicals are honestly really good, I 1000% recommend them if you can find them on YouTube or something!
Eric and Alan are such good characters, I have the biggest crushes on both of ‘em, and I LOVE the idea of a poly ship with them, so I did a little thing with that concept here~
also I have a TON of OCs so I’m not sure which one you wanted to know more about? “them” makes me think you’re referring to my genderfluid Phantomhive servant Marlowe, but I’m not sure ;w; however I love to write about my OCs so when the askbox opens back up, if you’re still curious, please do let me know!!
for now, here’s some Eric x reader x Alan goodness! featuring a SMALL cameo by my newest OC Elysia Malla, the department head of the British Branch Reapers’ Medical Division :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like most times you want to hang out at the Reaper Dispatch building, ERIC has to sneak you in.
And not so much sneak you in, as put a pair of glasses on you, tell you not to look anyone in the eye, pretend you’re “that new transfer from Sussex”, and under absolutely no circumstances let anyone tell his boss that you’re visiting. It’s a poor effort because like most supernatural creatures, Grim Reapers can sense humans. You’re pretty sure the whole office knows what’s up by now.
Of course, as long as you get to come visit ALAN, especially when he’s not doing very well, you’ll happily pretend the other Reapers are none the wiser.
Eric’s had his arm around your shoulder the whole time you walk, as usual. Not only is he protective of you, he also pretty obviously relishes any chance to give you affection that he can. Even though you’ve heard a few of the other Reapers say he’s intimidating or serious, that hasn’t been your experience. He’s big-hearted and friendly, and is forever sneaking kisses when he thinks nobody’s looking. You consider yourself incredibly lucky to have him as one of your lovers.
“So, he’s doing better now, right?” you ask as the two of you approach the door of the Medical Division.
“Mhm, doin’ a lot bet’er. He wouldn’t say it, bu’ I think he’d do good wit’ seein’ ye. Jus’ keep it down’, y’ knoo, ‘r ye migh’ get th’ stink-eye from ol’ Nurse Frightingale.” Eric winks before opening the door and gesturing you to walk through. “Aft’r ye, m’ darlin’.”
You push up on your tiptoes to press a kiss to his jaw. “What a gentleman.” With that you slip inside, Eric following so he can close the door behind the two of you.
The Medical Divisionis as quiet as most hospitals you’ve ever been in. It’s cool in temperature and you can hear the chip-choppy hum of an electric fan or two. That along with the sound of some machines are the only things you can hear, though. Everything is a soft white or pale blue shade, and more than anything, the air smells clean with soap and disinfectant. Despite Eric’s not-quite-incorrect observation of the department head, this is a relaxing place that perpetuates healing.
“Afternoon, Elysia,” he greets with a raised hand. “Jus’ brought (Name) by f’r a li’l bit, ‘f tha’s okay?”
The department head peers through her glasses at him with a very unimpressed look on her face. “Don’t get so casual, Mr. Slingby. It’s ‘Nurse Malla’ to you. Feel free to stay as long as you wish, provided you don’t get rowdy. The last thing Mr. Humphries needs is the two of you working him into a tizzy.”
He gives her a salute and mimes zipping his lips shut. “Aye, no w’rries, Nurse Malla. Ye go’ m’ word tha’ we won’t dare do nothin’ excitin’.”
You can’t help but smother a giggle as Elysia gives a long-suffering sigh. “Enjoy your visit.”
“’Preciate it, m’ lady!” Eric grins as he ushers you over to the bed Alan’s in right now.
Predictably, he looks to be attempting to review something in his ledger even though he’s clearly not feeling great. Behind his spectacles, his eyes look tired, and his shoulders are sagging like he wants nothing more than to sleep. Based on what Eric told you, however, he’s been asleep for an hour or so now.
You make sure Alan can see you before lowering yourself down onto the bed, leaning over and giving his forehead a gentle kiss. “Busy little bee, aren’t you?”
“Ah… (Name). Oh, dear, I didn’t expect Eric to bring you by.” He melts into the kiss anyway, and into the identical one that Eric gives him once he sits down. “Mm, you two. You didn’t have to come here… I’ll be leaving soon.”
You reach for his hand, and he doesn’t stop you, curling his fingers around yours. When you glance down, you’re not surprised to see thorny scars starting to twine around his wrist. “You need to relax,” you murmur. “That’s why this attack happened, isn’t it? Stress.”
“It could have been, or it could have just been from nothing. This disease doesn’t need a reason to flare up.” Alan lifts your hand and presses a reassuring kiss to your knuckles. “Don’t worry about me, darling. The attack only lasted a moment, and I’m feeling much better now.”
Eric chuckles, taking Alan’s other hand. “Aw, c’mon, d’ar. Ye cannae fault th’ poor thing f’r bein’ w’rried ‘bout ye. (Name)’s righ’ tha’ ye work tae hard.”
Alan offers an exhale through his nose, exasperated look obviously aimed at the both of you. “And you don’t work hard enough, dear. So it balances out. Anyway, I don’t fault them for being worried. I…” It seems the only reason he pauses is to glance at you with a vaguely guilty look. “… I’m just trying to reassure you, love.”
“I know.” You mirror the kiss he gave your hand on his, the same way Eric did with the kiss to Alan’s forehead. The one difference you make is that your kiss is pressed to the forming scars on his wrist. “I can’t help worrying when this happens, though. You and Eric are really important to me. I just want you to take care of yourself.” You bring his hand down, then give him a smirk. “Or you could just let us do it?”
Barely a second passes before Eric claps you on the shoulder. “Aye, darlin’, tha’s a grea’ idea!! Alrigh’, it’s settled then.”
Alan arches an eyebrow. It appears you’ve both lost him. “Oh, goodness. Dare I even ask what is settled, Eric?”
That grin on Eric’s face would definitely be trouble if he weren’t your partner in crime right at this moment. “Soon’s ye ge’ outta haur, we’re haulin’ y’r s’rry arse home early, an’ then it’s time f’r nothin’ bu’ a night’a us takin’ care’a ye! Coimhead air sin, good idea, (Name)!”
“Oh. Oh, no, the two of you can’t just—”
Alan’s halfway through his protest when a pair of heels clicks on the floor. “Slingby! (Surname)! I warned you not to work him up. So that’s it; get out!”
It takes just seconds for Eric to tug you toward the door. “Thanks f’r once, Elysia! I’ll ‘ave s’me biscuits ‘r summat on y’r desk taemarra’ mornin’!”
What follows the two of you out is a frustrated, “It’s Nurse Malla! Get it wrong one more time and you’ll find yourself here as a patient!”

RIKU’S RANDOM FANDOM LIFE
Sometimes I feel like I don’t own that many 2.5D shows on DVD or Blu-Ray, because one quick look at my shelves reveals only two series:
The Prince of Tennis (FIRST SEASON!) aka VERY OLD SHOWS
Touken Ranbu... musical and stage play.
So, how much can it be?
Admittedly, the 1st season of the Prince of Tennis musical series had 22 shows and including the Supporter’s DVDs, that’s good for a pretty large collection. However, I don’t even own half of everything that was released, so...
And both Touken Ranbu franchises are consistently delivering new content, but there can’t be that much, right? It’s been only 4 years since they started.
Out of curiosity I decided to list down everything I own and... I think I should stop feeling like I barely own anything. I discovered my 2.5D Touken Ranbu collection is already twice the size of my 2.5D Prince of Tennis collection! Literally! O.O At least it will be soon. Some discs are still in pre-order and will be released later this year, but... Also, two are currently “lost” in transit. (Hope they’ll be delivered soon.) Anyway, that’s a lot of discs!
(Edit: the “lost” discs made it safely to my home)
Yes, I own a lot. Clearly.
