I am wrong to believe that Varrick/Zhu Li is very rushed, and thus at best is toxic?

Cause I understand that TLOK had a very troubled production, but it seems odd that after essentially getting treating like shit for three seasons by Varrick, Zhu Li is fine with marrying Varrick just shortly after standing up for herself for the first time in their (platonic) relationship, no?

No same. Okay I dislike Varrick he’s funny and iconic sure but an ass, a shit person. In my eyes, he’s the ultimate villain. He’s a war profiteer. He literally bombed an art center and (attempted to) kidnapped a president to fatten his coffers and stole from Asami. He gets away with it all by running away, to Xafou. What a cop out. He treats Zhu Li horribly. He’s not likeable. He literally used Bolin. ( he also let sexual harassment fly on set poor Ginger) Took a sweet unsuspecting kid under his arms and used him to pump out propaganda. then he betrays Su by joining Kuvira and once again betrays his city by creating a weapon of mass destruction.

He is never called to account and no one really gets to express their anger towards him.

I love Zhu Li. But she has no self-respect. May be the reason she was his assistant, the whole time, and put up with all of it was because of her underlying feelings. I feel like it’s great that she stood up for herself, and their relationship could be cute if more time was taken to work on the problematic bits.

you are completely right to call out this weird relationship and others are right to enjoy it. Glad we agree it’s weird. The first time I watched the show I was confused by the wedding.

I think the reason they were married is because the show runners wanted a really happy final episode that really provided a sense of closure. What better way than a wedding ? But they couldn’t do that with any actual major characters, so why not just throw Zhu Li and Varrick together ?

maybe he’s better in the comics .

but in my honest opinion, he’s just as bad as Kuvira and it’s so hypocritical that he just gets to scamper off to a luxurious honey moon while she’s under house arrest.

[again this isn’t hate towards Varrick fans I’m literally a Kuvira Stan and am down bad for the bitter middle aged woman with anger issues who yells at dogs. You’re allowed to enjoy villainous characters. Fiction and reality are separate yada yada. ]

so the besties got me to watch atla+lok for the first time with them and i had a fun mini-game of ranking characters after each book (with lok, forgot for atla and only did a full one after finishing lmao) to track how i felt about character development and such, then i found a tiermaker that combined both shows into one so here's a post to preserve my 100% factually correct opinions feat. bestie-named categories. i kinda treat the tiers as a gradient up until emergency meeting, there's some crossover to be found and a few people who could probably swap if i spent long enough thinking on it but who has the time

+ some ship opinions bc i saw this one while searching for the others

assorted tidbits:

asami was in S tier for each korra book simply bc i liked her vibes but i couldn't keep her there for the overall rankings bc i feel like the writers did her wrong. she is my daughter tho, i adopted her

meelo went from C > B > A > S thru each book bc he's the icon that kept on slaying

emergency meeting explanations: general iroh is the og bc i heard his voice and screamed impostor / wu i simply could not stand and i wanted to throw him out of an airlock / that's not my katara it's not who took my daughter and did this to her

i only started to like varrick during that last book, so i technically wanted more screentime w just that version of him lmao

i was assigned jinora stan before we started lok and it was correct. she's my actual daughter, i gave birth to her myself, actually

kuvira would be S++ if i'd liked her ending more

mako was the top of C for the entirety of his run. i saw the vision but it was not made real

I'm back! And this time, I want to ask you about Asami!

Let’s talk about engineer extraordinaire and strong contender for most versatile character in terms of skills in the Avatar universe, the one and only Asami Sato.

1: sexuality headcanon

Not a change from canon, she’s a bisexual woman with a weakness for skillful and strong-willed benders.

2: otp

My OTP for Asami is Kuvira. The appeal of a power couple with these two is too strong to resist. I’m sure if Asami had been the one advising Kuvira during the three year gap, things would’ve been different because Asami would’ve stood her ground before Kuvira had a chance to do anything shady. Asami has been handling power as CEO of Future Industries beautifully. She hasn't allowed privilege get to her head, which is the sort of example Kuvira needed to rein in her worst impulses. The idea of an OT3 with Korra and Kuvira is dear to me, but I’m afraid the world is not ready yet for such awesomeness. 😏

3: brotp

I love the idea of Asami having Baatar Sr. bounce ideas off of her the way her father Hiroshi used to with her. Two brilliant non-benders just geeking out together while building all sorts of amazing inventions? Just beautiful!

4: notp

Varrick. No. Just no.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head

Asami officially earned her pilot's wings at the tender age of 12 years old, but she had been flying with Hiroshi since earlier than that. The skies are as familiar to her as the ground and Hiroshi would allow little Asami to take control of the biplane when they were flying together.

6: favorite line from this character

Although "people usually assume that I'm daddy's helpless little girl but I can handle myself" is an iconic Asami quote, my favorite line is "maybe we can still build something to get us all out of here" from Long Live the Queen because it shows how Asami will look for a way out of a problem even if it means to literally build her way out of it.

7: One way in which I relate to this character

She’s the glue of Team Avatar, and I’m sort of the one holding things together in my family.

8: thing that gives me second-hand embarrassment about this character

That unnecessary love triangle from seasons 1 and 2.

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

Cinnamon roll all the way who can also be quite literally electrifying (I'll see myself out). 😅
