man. sometimes i think about the end of soc and about the possibility of jesper leaving. but because he wanted to see this through, because he wanted to right things, because he wanted to see inej again and know she was safe, because he wanted to show his father that perhaps he wasn’t entirely a failure who only did reckless things, because he wanted something more for his friends. he went on

Okay, so I keep seeing people talking about how in the soc spinoff Wesper will be together and how even after the whole Van Eck reveal they will stay together...

BUT

What if that's not how it goes down... What if Kaz tells them about the job with Van Eck, but he doesn't reveal about Jan being Wylan's dad? What if Wylan gets suspicious and asks Kaz if he knows? And (of course I know Wylan, I know everything) Kaz tells Wylan that he won't reveal his secret, not yet anyway.

What if Wylan gets scared about how Jesper will react (imagine all the jokes and hatred towards the Merchant Council, imagine the crows hating on Jan Van Eck and everyone related to him, and how Wylan will feel about that) so Wylan says nothing.

But the secret is too much so he starts distancing himself from Jesper because he is afraid. Imagine them throughout the whole Ice Court Heist being really tense and insecure of their relationship.

And THEN, Kuwei comes, and he starts flirting with Jesper, and Jesper, thinking Wylan is going to break up with him, plays along (to make Wylan jealous) but it backfires because of course it does.

The reveal happens and Jesper is really mad at Wylan, so he breaks up with him, words are exchanged (mean words he doesn't really mean but oh well) and Wylan kind of cracks.

Like imagine all the tension from hiding his secret, of Jesper, seeing his father again, the break up...

So he kind of snaps and tells Jesper everything, the years of abuse and neglect, and how his father tried to kill him. He tells him the real reason why he is in the Barrel and why Ketterdam never felt like home to him (at least not until Jesper).

And after the revelation Jesper feels bad and wants to make ammends, but Wylan is having none of it (he's still hurt).

So they break up, and the plot continues, weeks pass and slowly they start reconciling, Jesper apologizes, Wylan apologizes, things are starting to go right again...

But then, PAM the Kuwei/Jesper kiss (ofc Jesper thinking he was kissing Wylan because of the tailoring Nina did). And shit hits the fan, again.

In the end they get back together after Wylan finds out about his mom, and has a breakdown, there Jesper conforts him and tells him about his mistake, about how he stills loves him and regrets what he said/did, and Wylan forgives him, and they both heal from this and get back together happy and all.

Anyways that's how I would write it, I might just do it in a fanfic who knows.

today I am obsessed with thoughts about Wylan, Marya and Jesper destroying Jan's stuff

Jesper proposed to destroy something that reminds Wylan about his father, and he was thinking that it would be like 3-4 things that they would ruin together to release tension, and then they would do some declutter like normal people do: sell something, throw something out

And then they destroyed a few things of Jan, and Wylan looked so happy after it, all smiling and flushing, and he said that it was really helpful, so Jesper was just glad that he proposed something that actually helped Wylan, who still sometimes moved around the house like he is expecting Jan to enter the room every second

he totally thought about this as about one-time thing, but the next day he woke up to see Wylan sitting on the bed with a scheming face. Then Wylan understood that Jesper was awake and asked: "What do you think about drowning something in the canal tonight?"

"Are we talking about a person? Because I'm pretty sure that Kuwei is in Ravka", joked Jesper, and Wylan hit him with a pillow. "I am talking about those awful figurines from my father’s cabinet"

So they drowned those absolutely tasteless and ridiculously expensive porcelain figurines

And then Wylan asked next week in the middle of the breakfast: "What about some skeet shooting?" and this is how they got rid of the favourite dinner service of Jan

And then, one day, Jesper found himself helping Wylan to take out to the garden table from Jan’s cabinet, and Marya, who is sitting in the garden and having her afternoon tea, just calmly watching her son and his boyfriend setting the table on fire (this is one of the good days when she almost sure that she is remembering everything)

And Wylan came to her and kissed her on the cheek with: "Mom, is everything fine?"

And she smiled into the cup and said: "Yes, fire is very cosy, Wylan. Actually, what do you think about bringing Jan's formal portrait here?"

don't mind me, just trying to make a comprehensive timeline of soc/ck

seeing as grishverse is inspired by early 19th century russia, I'll be operating under the assumption that they use the julian calendrer. therefore:

beginning of soc: martius/march ("...the last gasp of winter before spring began in earnest.")

beginning of soc -> djerholm: 2 weeks ("When does[Hringkälla] take place?” / "On the spring equinox.” / “Two weeks from today.")

ice court heist: mid-martius

returning to ketterdam: early-aprillis/april ("It had been just under a week since they’d reached Ketterdam, almost a month since they’d left Djerholm.")

returning/inej's captivity -> rescuing inej: 1 week ("...Van Eck had said he would give them seven days [...] then he would begin torturing Inej. They were almost out of time.")

rescuing inej -> auction: ~1 week (failed sweet reef plan + "...fair auction [...] at the Church of Barter in four days’ time.")

auction: late aprillis-early maius/may

auction -> kaz/inej dock scene: 3 weeks ("In the three weeks since Kuwei’s auction...")

kaz/inej dock scene -> inej threatening pekka: ~1 week ("A month ago he’d been a rich man...")

end of soc: late maius-early lunius/june

overall: the entirety of the duology is around 9 weeks, plus one more week until pekka's epilogue, so 2.5 months total.

BONUS POINTS:

wylan arrived at the barrel three months before the start of soc, in the winter.

kaz and inej steal the dekappel six months before the start of soc.

inej joined the dregs "days after her fifteenth birthday", and since it's implied she'd been with the dregs almost 2 years by the start of soc, we can assume she was born sometime in the spring or summer. she turned 17 either during ck or right after. (EDIT: apparently she's a cancer according to leigh! so she was born in july or late june.)

EXTRA bonus points: using the fact that sailing time from ketterdam to djerholm is stated to be about 10-14 days, we can create a nifty (albeit roughly estimated, disregarding ocean conditions and like, the fact that earth is not actually flat) map of sailing time for all your captain ghafa uses:

ketterdam -> behz ju, shu han: 4-6 days

ketterdam -> os kervo, ravka: 6-7 days

ketterdam -> southern colonies: 6-8 days

ketterdam -> eames chin, novyi zem: 8-10 days

Time to make my kuwei yul bo apology post.!!! Kuwei was a 15 year old child who saw his father die in front of him and was locked into fjerda for weeks if not months and managed to be smart enough to convince them he can't make parem again AND that he's not an inferni. A 9th grade kid with a bounty on his head that's bigger than a literal king's, managed to convince the military nation whose purpose is to eradicate grisha. That he's not grisha. Inside their own palace. With their military chief. Also he offered himself up for death the second it felt like the Crows were going to die. Also this kid is hilarious and managed to get one over six genius outlaws for weeks by pretending not to speak their language. And then this 9th grade kid managed to spearhead the invention of the antidote that reversed jurda freaking parem. What's his crime, wanting to kiss a pretty boy before "98% chances of death" day and being mildly annoying? Kuwei yul bo is a gem of an underrated character thanks

i love jesper sososososo much. with all my heart. he means everything to me.

BUT HOLY SHIT I WILL NEVER FORGIVE HIM FOR THE WAY HE TREATED KUWEI.

kaz was pretty awful too but like that's just kaz so I'm not as upset by it. jesper was just mean.

Even when he's saying something not inherently mean to him. like his tone is so belittling it makes me wanna GAASFAHSHDAS

and like, i can forgive the teasing i guess, because that's kinda how jesper talks to everyone, including wylan. (it's a little different since kuwei is literally their hostage and they shut him in a tomb for weeks and then tried to sell him so kuwei probably wants nothing to do with them at that point, but he does end up having kinda a crush on jesper so maybe he didn't mind idk).

BUT OH MY GOD. when jesper said "those shu soldiers can smell us. YOUR father made that possible" I WANTED TO PUNCH HIM. kuwei watched his father die in front of him. parem was an experiment meant to help kuwei hide his powers. and then kuwei got dragged off and kept in the ice court for god fucking knows how long and was forced to make the formula for a drug that would massacre his own people. Jesper knows all of this and still decides to say that. As i said I love jesper but that moment makes me so mad at him.

then later in another jesper chapter, he internally says "The sooner Kuwei got on that boat, the better. The tomb was starting to feel crowded." KUWEI DOESNT WANNA FUCKING BE THERE?? literally leave him alone wtf did he do to you.

then in the entire black veil scene, jesper responds to almost everything kuwei says with some little dig at the fact that kuwei's dad made parem and everything is kuwei's fault to the point where kuwei is basically begging jesper for understanding and jesper dismisses him like annoyingly easily. I felt for kuwei so hard reading that scene. I wish we got at least one chapter from his POV just to know how he's feeling.

mostly i think jesper is just projecting his internalized grisha-phobia onto kuwei which i get is part of his character growth and stuff but it's just so unfair to kuwei. all kuwei is trying to do is relate to him and find some common ground on some level but jesper just acts like such a jerk. and when he kisses him and then just runs of and leaves him there... that was,,, like im not gonna act like jesper was 100% in the wrong for that situation because he wasn't but he definitely could have handled that situation better.

He also is probably doing it to impress kaz too because there's a lot of moments where the 2 of them gang up on kuwei like middle school playground bullies. Those parts probably infuriated me the most, because like... you kidnapped him. obviously he's still in a better situation than the ice court but i would at least expect jesper to have some sympathy.

but one thing that really gets me is how the fandom acts like wylan and kuwei are enemies and like, wylan despises kuwei. that's just so out of character for everyone involved. wylan and kuwei are the closest to being actual friends than kuwei + anyone else. jesper is the one who hates kuwei. I hate when people project their kuwei hate onto the crows but at least do it to the one who's actually shown being mean to him. when wylan said that "push you in the canal" thing he was running on broken ribs, a dead friend and like a half hour of sleep so he would have said that to literally anyone.

this was a really messy and unstructured tangent but i just really needed to get this out there. lmk your thoughts

Why Jesper didn't like Wylan at First

So, I see Jesper get a lot of hate for how he treated Wylan when they first met. As someone who adores Jesper Fahey, I cannot let this stand and I feel like I should address it. If you still don't like him by the end of this post then let's agree to disagree.

So my primary defense for him in his beginning relationship with Wylan is that they didn't know each other. Like Jesper had no idea who this random "kid" was and Kaz wasn't exactly in a telling mood. So Wylan just randomly appearing in the barrel without any explanation from Kaz would have put Jesper on edge.

And then of course Kaz reveals where Wylan grew up and his last name, etc. Jesper is obviously upset because why the hell would Kaz higher some random run away rich kid slumming it in the Barrel. Let's also not forget that Jan is a very wealthy and influential Mercher who has a lot of power. Let's also not forget that Merchers have a reputation for treating Grisha like indentured servants. Let's not forget the merchers sell and buy Grisha, participate in their trading/slaving, and are overall very abusive and oppressive to Grisha. So, Jesper, who is a Grisha and tries to keep his identity hidden and is ashamed of this part of him, just found out he's going to be spending weeks if not more with a guy who probably thinks lesser of him. He came from a background that might make someone stuck up or cruel or arrogant, and Jesper obviously has more humble origins.

And let's not forget that Jesoer doesn't know a lot of detail about Jan Van Eck, just the basics. Meaning he didn't know that Wylan was supposed to be at school, he didn't know his mom was "dead", and he didn't know Wylan was really isolated for most of his life and he especially didn't know about his relationship with his father.

So, yeah, Jesper judged Wylan at first. And obviously he couldn't voice any of these complaints to Kaz because have you met Kaz Brekker?? He couldn't say anything! So he took it out on Wylan. Fair? No. Understandable? Yes.

But let's not forget how their relationship developed. Jesper defended Wylan to Kaz multiple times, he comforted Wylan when he found out about his Mom, he was desperate to explain to Wylan that he did care about him and want him that way after he kissed Kuwei on accident ("Then why couldn't he tell the difference?" Because he's smart stupid not stupid smart okay-).

And besides, you do see the progression of their relationship go from avoidance/judgement to tolerance to understanding to care to love etc. Like it was a really beautiful relationship arc for both of them. Jesper's taunting turned to teasing which turned to flirting and Wylan always liked the attention and he started to pay more attention to Jesper. It's part of what makes them so special

Anyways. Wesper is not "toxic", Jesper is not "an asshole", Wylan is not "weak" and he can take care of himself. These are amazing characters some of you just won't look at them in depth and that's truly a shame. Thank you for reading! Let me know if there's anything I missed that you think I should include.

guys guys hear me out; modern uni au with wylan and kuwei and theyre academic rivals like imagine them immediately finding the other after receiving test scores and its all "haha FUCK YOU AND YOUR 98%" and the other gloats for at least a week also imagine them getting into one of those "well at least" type arguments and then kuwei says smth along the lines of "at least i have multiple writing awards!" and then wylan in a moment of anger goes "of course i dont have writing awards, im fucking dyslexic" and then kuwei is all stunned silence and wylan instantly regrets it thinking that kuwei wont see him as much of a rival anymore now that he knows his 'weakness' but instead kuwei starts trying much harder to beat him cus he just sees wylan stronger for it (as he should) bonus - imagine kuwei has been trying to get wylan to read his fav books for months but wylan would always bs some excuse but now that he knows, kuwei sends him an onslaught of audiobook links followed up by "if you dont start listening to these in the next 24 hours, i will be at your dorm window at 3:28am." "kuwei i live on the fourth floor,,,?" "and??"
