here’s to a year of trigun :] just a cute little (1k. oops.) essay reflecting back on how it’s changed my life.
(twitter crosspost LOL)
You know that strange, dissatisfying limbo between hyperfixations? That was me in January. A 2-year long obsession with Genshin Impact was dragging itself to its grave and I was struggling with life. I got diagnosed with a rare chronic pain disorder at around the same time I caught mono and strep simultaneously (that week SUCKED), classes were kicking my ass, and I was experiencing the existential loneliness of adulthood for the first time.
University student things!
And to make it all extra unbearable, my writing was empty. Soulless. I’d write something for a zine and go damn—this shit is awful. Not because it was technically flawed or anything, but there was just…nothing there. I would stare at my stats page on Ao3 waiting for comments and then bitterly complain at my friends when no one wanted to read my work. Hell, I don’t think I wanted to read my work. I’m sure you know the feeling.
And because my writing is how I cope with Everything, being unable to write made the Everything so, so much worse.
Then—and I forget exactly how I heard about it—I learned that Trigun Stampede had just released its fourth episode. I knew of Trigun from a buddy of mine who had been excitement-posting about the reboot months before, but all I knew about the reboot was that Yoshitsugu Matsuoka was voicing the main character. I had a free afternoon—why not give it a try?
I still have my liveblogging from January. Here was my initial reaction:
Tumblr media
I was having a great fuckin’ time.
February rolls around and I am immediately, irreversibly, hit with Plantcest brainrot so bad that I discard any pretense of being icked out by brocest ship and I write a 9k long KV thesis called “we’ve got to get back to that stinking garden,” named after a Natalie Diaz poem called “my brother named gethsemane,” which is, truly and genuinely, The Poem on Brothers (Complicated) of all time. That fic is where the visions and prophesies came back, where I started feeling like my writing was impactful again. Like it meant something. It was my first ever foray into in-narrative smut and the first of many, many attempts to capture a future where Vash and Knives love each other even after the end of everything.
This is really where I found my footing on Twitter and as a short story writer, I think. Where I started really caring about making every word of a narrative pay rent, about conveying and evoking specific, tangible feelings, and exploring genres of media I’d never really been interested in before. Before February, I wrote mostly genfic and T-rated romance. Every so often, I’d dabble in some graphic violence.
And hey! Now I write hardcore kink and graphic erotica. The gore I used to dabble in is now something I dive into feetfirst and with a rabid desire to make it as sexy as possible. I fetishize the crease of an elbow and the bristly sections of an undercut and I write about brothers having nasty, angry, dubiously consensual sex. I could not possibly tell you how I got here, but shit, man, I don’t regret a damn thing.
It’s through Trigun that I met some of the most talented, sweetest, most encouraging folk. Plantcest creators, Vashwood creators, people who saw me writing ZazieVash and went hello motherfucker please feed me some more, Romeryl enthusiasts, Kniveswood and Plantwood enjoyers…shit, guys. You’re all so fucking cool.
I got invited to a zine for the first time, I started taking commissions (and holy shit, what the fuck, I still can’t wrap my head around that at all. The fuck you mean, you’ll pay me Real Actual Money for personalized fic? Insane to me. I’m so goddamn grateful.) for the first time, and hell, I published a poetry collection for the first time. Which people downloaded? And tipped me for? What the fuck? I’m still reeling from that. Thank you, by the way. Genuinely.
What else this year…well. I commissioned art for the first time, I participated in more big bangs and exchanges than ever, I read voraciously and wrote with just as much fervor. I watched ‘98 and I cried and I read half of TriMax and cried some more. I wrote more erotica than I ever have, and I wrote more fic that I’m genuinely, painfully proud of this year than any other year.
A lot of my writing is about grief and rage, and a lot of it is about trying to be funny in the face of that. A lot of is about learning to live, because that’s what I’m doing right now, despite everything. A lot of it is about trying to be kind.
But in summary, because this is getting ridiculously long, here’s what I got out of Trigun:
Vash the Stampede refuses to die. I’m trying to emulate that.
Meryl Stryfe cares about doing the right thing, even if it means she’ll get in the middle of a fight between aliens armed with two bullets in a tiny pistol.
Wolfwood is carefully, disastrously kind. I want to be like that.
And Knives is nuttier than a Victorian lady in a room painted in arsenic green, but still. I love him anyway.
And Milly :] no thoughts about Milly. I love Milly because she is also incredibly kind :]
Trigun has changed my entire goddamn life this year. I think it’s made me a better person. It’s certainly made me a better writer, and it’s connected me to so many lovely and beautiful people. Thank you all for sticking around, and here’s to another year of love, peace, and unhinged porn. I love you all :]

Kanthallur Salai
Tumblr media
The salais were institutions of higher education associated with temples (Kanthallur salai, Parthivapuram salai, Thiruvalla salai, Moozhikkulam salai etc.). Established by the Ay kings, they followed gurukula system (students living in proximity to the teacher) Though the royalty provided free food, clothing and accommodation to the students, the administration of salas were mostly autonomous.
Known as 'Dakshina Nalanda', Kanthallur salai is believed to have been founded by the Ay king Karunthadakan (857-885 AD). Later, this salai gained world fame as a center of learning. Students from foreign countries like Sri Lanka too came to Kanthallur salai for higher studies. This mahashala provided training in multiple branches of knowledge including martial arts. What set Kanthalloor apart from other ancient Indian universities of that era was the diversity in the subjects it offered. In Kanthalloor, students were taught subjects such as atheism which were considered taboo in other universities.
There are conflicting opinions about the exact location of Kanthallur salai. KV Subramania Iyer speculated that Kanthallur salai may have been located in a village called Kanthallur, seven miles from Neyyatinkara in present-day Thiruvananthapuram district. T. Gopinatha Rao quotes records dating back to the 9th century which refer to the deity in present day Valiyashala as Kanthallur Chalai Mahadeva.
Kanthalur salai appears repeatedly in the Chola inscriptions. There are several references to Kanthallur salai in Rajarajan's inscriptions about the attacks on Ay, Mahodayapuram and Mooshika kingdoms. It is thought that Ay rajas have become the vasals of Pandyas by that time. His inscription from the 4th year of his reign mentions 'Kanthalur Salai kalamaruthu aruli'. In fact, this is his first achievement listed in the chronology of events. Rajarajan was obviously very proud of this achievement.
Since 'kalamaruthu' can have many connotations, there were arguments that this means that the ships at Kanthallur were destroyed or that only the free food distribution for the students was stopped.
However in 2009, a hero-stone (veerakkal) belonging to the reign of Rajarajan was unearthed. It has a eulogy in Tamil that talks about the king “beheading the Malai Alargal (chera warriors)”, settling the long-standing debate about what he did at Kanthallur Salai. It is evident that Cholas destroyed the salai, annexed the port of Vizhinjam and killed the warriors. The salai is mentioned in the records of his successors too, showing multiple Chola invasions across generations.
Later, Vizhinjam was renamed as Rajendrachola Pattanam. Due to the incessant attacks of Cholas, the importance of Vizhinjam port and Kanthalloor Salai (if it survived Rajarajan's attacks in the first place) gradually deteriorated. Between the 10th and the 12th centuries Kanthalloor Salai and the port of Vizhinjam, were completely destroyed in war.
=======
In my upcoming fanfiction about Ravidasan, he and Parameshwaran will be Kanthallur Salai alumni and they will send little Amarabhujangan for higher education in this place.
In historical inscriptions, his name is Ravidasan Panchavan Brahmadhirajan. Brahma arayan/Brahmadhi rajan were titles given to high class Brahmin officials in administration and military. Another person of similar status mentioned in the novel is the Prime Minister of the Chola Kingdom, Aniruddha Brahmarayar.
The above picture is purely for aesthetic purposes.

Chadwick, who was champion of the Formula Regional-spec-W Series in 2019, 2021 and ’22, will race for Andretti Autosport in Indy Nxt this year. She was signed by Williams as a development driver in 2019 (with the team’s Driver Academy not created until 2020), and two years ago the team decided to increase her involvement within the team by giving her more time in their simulator in Grove, England. Williams already announced at the end of 2022 that they would continue their support of Chadwick into 2023, and on Wednesday added that she “will continue with a personalised simulator programme to aid in her progression as a driver and provide valuable support to the team’s race preparations” through 2023. Sato funded move to IndyCar after F1 career ended Sato has scaled back to an oval-only campaign for 2023 Takuma Sato has explained on motorsport journalist Marshall Pruett’s podcast how he self-funded his move into IndyCar back in 2010 after his Formula 1 career came to an end. The Japanese driver raced in F1 from 2002 to 2008, and was in contention to race for Toro Rosso in 2009 but ended up with a year on the sidelines before joining IndyCar with KV Racing Technology. After 13 years of full-time competition in the series with five different teams, and six wins, he has decided to scale back to only contesting the oval races for 2023 and has moved to Chip Ganassi Racing. “Of course, all the drivers want to be always professional, always want to be employed and admitted on your performance,” said Sato. “But sometimes these things are not going that simple, and I thought now is the time I really need to open the door myself even using just pure personal budget, at the very beginning. I was confident that I could get it back in the end. It took time, of course!” Using his own income, Sato got his first IndyCar seat aged 33. He’s now 45, and has been earning money by driving since then thanks to pay cheques from teams wanting his services but also in earnings from major races like the Indianapolis 500, which he has won twice. Examining the Education Budget of 2024-2025: Key Insights
The financial year 2024-25 promises to be a watershed moment for Indian education, with Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman unveiling the Interim Budget, underlining the government's commitment to strengthening the country's educational foundation. A large increase in budget allocations for the Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) and the Higher Education Department demonstrates a concerted effort to improve the quality and accessibility of education throughout the country.
Tumblr media
The Department of School Education and Literacy (DoSEL) has been granted an impressive allocation of ₹73,008.10 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year, marking a robust increase of ₹4,203.25 crore over the previous year's budget. This upward revision signals the government's intent to strengthen the school education infrastructure and enhance learning outcomes for millions of students across the nation.
Equally noteworthy is the increment in the budget for the Higher Education Department, set at ₹47,619.77 crore for the coming fiscal year. This allocation represents a substantial rise from the ₹44,094.62 crore earmarked for the current financial year, highlighting the government's focus on elevating the standards of higher education and fostering an environment conducive to research and innovation.
The cumulative budget for the Education Ministry now stands at ₹1,20,627.87 crore, indicating a significant increase from the previous year's allocation of ₹1,12,898.97 crore. This growth in funding is poised to catalyze the transformation of the educational sector, making it more dynamic and responsive to the needs of the 21st-century learner.
Delving deeper into the specifics, the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) initiative has been a notable beneficiary, receiving ₹6,050 crore for the 2024-25 fiscal year. This increase from the previous year's allocation underscores the government's ambition to redefine the contours of school education in India, with PM SHRI schools set to become the exemplars of excellence in teaching and learning.

The budgetary enhancements extend to the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) and Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), with allocations of ₹9,302.67 crore and ₹5,800 crore, respectively. These institutions are crucial to the government's vision of providing high-quality education to children from all sections of society, regardless of their geographical or economic backgrounds.
However, the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) saw a slight reduction in its budget, receiving ₹510 crore compared to ₹518.50 crore in the previous fiscal year. Despite this, the NCERT continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the educational curriculum and ensuring the dissemination of standardized learning materials across the country.
The Samagra Shiksha scheme, the cornerstone of the country's school education system, has been allocated ₹37,500 crore, maintaining its critical role in providing holistic education to students from the primary to the secondary levels.
This year's budget also shines a light on the Pradhan Mantri Poshan Shakti Nirman (PM POSHAN) scheme, which has seen its budget increase to ₹12,467.39 crore. This initiative is vital for ensuring that students receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy and focused on their studies, reinforcing the government's commitment to nurturing both the minds and bodies of India's future generations.
In conclusion, the Education Budget 2024-25 is a testament to the government's unwavering dedication to elevating the educational landscape of India. By channeling resources into both school and higher education, the budget lays a solid foundation for a brighter, more educated future, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to the nation's progress.

A new way to let AI chatbots converse all day without crashing

A new way to let AI chatbots converse all day without crashing
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When a human-AI conversation involves many rounds of continuous dialogue, the powerful large language machine-learning models that drive chatbots like ChatGPT sometimes start to collapse, causing the bots’ performance to rapidly deteriorate.
A team of researchers from MIT and elsewhere has pinpointed a surprising cause of this problem and developed a simple solution that enables a chatbot to maintain a nonstop conversation without crashing or slowing down.
Their method involves a tweak to the key-value cache (which is like a conversation memory) at the core of many large language models. In some methods, when this cache needs to hold more information than it has capacity for, the first pieces of data are bumped out. This can cause the model to fail.
By ensuring that these first few data points remain in memory, the researchers’ method allows a chatbot to keep chatting no matter how long the conversation goes.
The method, called StreamingLLM, enables a model to remain efficient even when a conversation stretches on for more than 4 million words. When compared to another method that avoids crashing by constantly recomputing part of the past conversations, StreamingLLM performed more than 22 times faster.
This could allow a chatbot to conduct long conversations throughout the workday without needing to be continually rebooted, enabling efficient AI assistants for tasks like copywriting, editing, or generating code.
“Now, with this method, we can persistently deploy these large language models. By making a chatbot that we can always chat with, and that can always respond to us based on our recent conversations, we could use these chatbots in some new applications,” says Guangxuan Xiao, an electrical engineering and computer science (EECS) graduate student and lead author of a paper on StreamingLLM.
Xiao’s co-authors include his advisor, Song Han, an associate professor in EECS, a member of the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and a distinguished scientist of NVIDIA; as well as Yuandong Tian, a research scientist at Meta AI; Beidi Chen, an assistant professor at Carnegie Mellon University; and senior author Mike Lewis, a research scientist at Meta AI. The work will be presented at the International Conference on Learning Representations.
A puzzling phenomenon
Large language models encode data, like words in a user query, into representations called tokens. Many models employ what is known as an attention mechanism that uses these tokens to generate new text.
Typically, an AI chatbot writes new text based on text it has just seen, so it stores recent tokens in memory, called a KV Cache, to use later. The attention mechanism builds a grid that includes all tokens in the cache, an “attention map” that maps out how strongly each token, or word, relates to each other token.
Understanding these relationships is one feature that enables large language models to generate human-like text.
But when the cache gets very large, the attention map can become even more massive, which slows down computation.
Also, if encoding content requires more tokens than the cache can hold, the model’s performance drops. For instance, one popular model can store 4,096 tokens, yet there are about 10,000 tokens in an academic paper.
To get around these problems, researchers employ a “sliding cache” that bumps out the oldest tokens to add new tokens. However, the model’s performance often plummets as soon as that first token is evicted, rapidly reducing the quality of newly generated words.
In this new paper, researchers realized that if they keep the first token in the sliding cache, the model will maintain its performance even when the cache size is exceeded.
But this didn’t make any sense. The first word in a novel likely has nothing to do with the last word, so why would the first word be so important for the model to generate the newest word?
In their new paper, the researchers also uncovered the cause of this phenomenon.
Attention sinks
Some models use a Softmax operation in their attention mechanism, which assigns a score to each token that represents how much it relates to each other token. The Softmax operation requires all attention scores to sum up to 1. Since most tokens aren’t strongly related, their attention scores are very low. The model dumps any remaining attention score in the first token.
The researchers call this first token an “attention sink.”
“We need an attention sink, and the model decides to use the first token as the attention sink because it is globally visible — every other token can see it. We found that we must always keep the attention sink in the cache to maintain the model dynamics,” Han says.
In building StreamingLLM, the researchers discovered that having four attention sink tokens at the beginning of the sliding cache leads to optimal performance.
They also found that the positional encoding of each token must stay the same, even as new tokens are added and others are bumped out. If token 5 is bumped out, token 6 must stay encoded as 6, even though it is now the fifth token in the cache.
By combining these two ideas, they enabled StreamingLLM to maintain a continuous conversation while outperforming a popular method that uses recomputation.
For instance, when the cache has 256 tokens, the recomputation method takes 63 milliseconds to decode a new token, while StreamingLLM takes 31 milliseconds. However, if the cache size grows to 4,096 tokens, recomputation requires 1,411 milliseconds for a new token, while StreamingLLM needs just 65 milliseconds.
“The innovative approach of StreamingLLM, centered around the attention sink mechanism, ensures stable memory usage and performance, even when processing texts up to 4 million tokens in length,” says Yang You, a presidential young professor of computer science at the National University of Singapore, who was not involved with this work. “This capability is not just impressive; it’s transformative, enabling StreamingLLM to be applied across a wide array of AI applications. The performance and versatility of StreamingLLM mark it as a highly promising technology, poised to revolutionize how we approach AI-driven generation applications.”
Tianqi Chen, an assistant professor in the machine learning and computer science departments at Carnegie Mellon University who also was not involved with this research, agreed, saying “Streaming LLM enables the smooth extension of the conversation length of large language models. We have been using it to enable the deployment of Mistral models on iPhones with great success.”
The researchers also explored the use of attention sinks during model training by prepending several placeholder tokens in all training samples.
They found that training with attention sinks allowed a model to maintain performance with only one attention sink in its cache, rather than the four that are usually required to stabilize a pretrained model’s performance.
But while StreamingLLM enables a model to conduct a continuous conversation, the model cannot remember words that aren’t stored in the cache. In the future, the researchers plan to target this limitation by investigating methods to retrieve tokens that have been evicted or enable the model to memorize previous conversations.
StreamingLLM has been incorporated into NVIDIA’s large language model optimization library, TensorRT-LLM.
This work is funded, in part, by the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, the MIT Science Hub, and the U.S. National Science Foundation.
