Kyalin/LOK Headcanon #3

I like to think that Lin got into loads of fights during her younger school years. She’s a very indignant person and I can’t help but picture her ready to throw hands with anyone who disrespects her family or her friends. Someone gets too rough with Su on the playground? Lin resorts to an all out brawl. Someone picks on Bumi because he can’t bend? Lin beats the shit out of them. So much so that her hands are almost always cut, bruised, and beat up. As a result, Kya takes it upon herself to always bring bandaids and bandages to school with her so she can patch Lin up before the principal calls her into the office. (Bumi draws little pictures on thr bandaids/bandages).

Kya: “You know, Bumi can defend himself.”

Lin: “He’s too nice to do anything about those jerks. Someone has to make sure they know who they’re talking to.”

Kya: “Your mom isn’t going to be happy about another call from the principal.”

Lin: “Oh well, too bad. I’d hit them again. I have no regrets.” *makes cute little angry face*

Kya: *deep sigh*

Starting at the end, they’re appealing to me because they’re the projection characters for me. They are to me what the main characters are for the so-called “target” audience: what my life might be if I had power (both “magic” and money) and ran in the Save The World circles.

Headcanon:

Kya was kind of forced to keep an eye on Lin after Bumi got too old and caught up in his own business. After all, Kya already had to manage Tenzin when her parents were busy. But in her own way, she was too easy-going like Toph for Lin’s liking. So when Toph gave Su into Lin’s keeping, Su was confronted with a kid who was rebelling against both her mom and her babysitter.

Hot take?

I don’t know that I do this part right. Most of what I tried just sounded like new HCs to me. 😕

Okay, I am gonna ask on the Beifong sisters. Suyin und Lin!

Oooh, the Beifong sisters! I would totally watch a spin-off with nothing but Beifong drama. That's how much I love this family, warts and all precisely because in their imperfections they're so fascinating. @mikaharuka also wanted to know about them so let's begin with the elder, dutiful sister, the one and only Chief Lin "that lady is my hero" Beifong and I'll get to Su in a separate post.

1. sexuality headcanon

Besides being a workaholic and married to her job, I believe Lin is queer (undefined but definitely not straight) and demiromantic.   

2: otp 

OTP for Lin? Lin/happiness. Although I enjoy Kyalin, I don’t really have a strong OTP for her but I want her to live her best life with whoever she chooses. I’ve seen her shipped with a lot of characters and it’s funny how she’s been paired with both of Tenzin’s siblings. One ship I admit I find intriguing is one that I stumbled upon through a fanart and it’s Lin/Iroh II and honestly, I can see it work. Yeah, she’s older than him but it’s about the same age difference as the canonical Tenzin/Pema. Besides. Lin is hot and she definitely doesn’t move or look like a woman in her fifties so age ain’t nothing but a number here. I can get behind cougar Lin 😉

3: brotp 

Mako. Although she still has a good relationship with her old flame Tenzin, I believe Mako is the closest to a BROTP for her. I’ve seen Lin romantically paired with Mako but personally, I prefer the “momboss and detectiveson” dynamic for them. They just understand each other well since they’re both the oldest children and they had to carry the burden of responsibility early in their lives.  I also like to think that she could be a great mentor and friend to Kuvira and I love the idea of the two of them sharing drinks while spilling the beans about Suyin. 

4: notp 

Although I like the enemies to friends to lovers dynamic, I don’t see her with Tarrloq.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head 

The reason Lin and Tenzin spent a lot of time together growing up is Aang, since he was for all intents and purposes, Lin and Su’s main father figure. Like Tenzin once noted, “my father and Lin got along famously.” After training with Tenzin, he would take some time to practice earthbending with the Beifong girls and Lin admitted that Aang made learning more fun that her mom. It took her a long time to recover from Aang’s demise so part of her initial skepticism toward Korra is the fact that it reminded her that Aang was gone and this chaotic energetic girl was his successor.

7: one way in which I relate to this character 

I can relate to her in the way she shows how she cares through actions and not words.

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character 

She definitely needs to improve the recruitment standards for the RCPD because the detective pair from Book 2 were painfully mediocre at best and it hurts to see them associated with her. 

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

She’s a grumpy, gruff cinnamon roll.

Anyway wouldn’t it be funny if I zukkacore came out as a zukka hater. I’m not gonna self censor this time so this better not show up on the tag

Fav is zukka obviously. I also like Zukki quite a bit as a sucker for a good polycule. In terms of all canon relationships across the series yuekka is probably my favorite, but I do also like Sukka, they’re cute what can I say! I also like yueki (Yue/suki) quite a bit & Mailee.

This is also an embarrassing one but as a kid I liked tokka quite a bit and I still have a soft spot for nostalgia reasons but I do know why that one is like iffy, if it’s a comfort to anyone I would only really go for that one after a MAJOR timeskip (like at least a decade maybe more fjdkdkdk). As a kid I definitely related to toph’s crush on Sokka & as an adult now I tend to headcanon her as a dyke but also like to be fair I also think having a crush on Sokka does not exempt a person irl or in the fiction from being a lesbian (considering I did and I am a dyke as well) FNDNDN. If anything he is the gateway. I broadly prefer to interpret their relationship as more sibling aligned these days.

In lok I like korrasami, kyalin, and wuko. In the broader Atlaverse I also like rangshi.

There are quite a few relationships I can like enjoy given the right context or are kinda ambivalent about. Most of the canon relationships are like fine I guess (except mako.rra which blows. And I actually like Mako quite a bit I think ppl overdo the mako hate). Sometimes it’s not personal, i don’t think it’s awful I just don’t like the relationship that much bc it’s like. Oh I don’t headcanon the character as straight or whatever (I really liked ma¡ko as a kid for instance but like as an adult I’m like wow that’s the most beard4beard thing I’ve ever seen). I don’t even hate zvtara (sorry to be cringefail I decided to censor anything I felt kinda negative abt to be nice). It’s not awful like I get it and I do think it’s the by far the best derivative of the same cringe boring het enemies to lovers ship that gets popular every few years I just see them more as friends. They’re very much giving “we would make each other worse” and like. I love making each other worse but it’s not for me.

Also my self indulgent secret ship is that I think sokkla (sokka/Azula) would be cool bc they would be intellectually combative. Like they would make each other worse and I WOULD like to see it. I do generally hc Azula as a dyke tho, not that Sokka couldn’t also be…. Anyway.

what made you ship it? the archetypes (esp korra <33), i thought it had good bones. temporary estrangement and gay awakening, prime subvarieties of friends to lovers. putting meat on the bones thru fic made me stick with it, now i basically just have my own version

what are your favorite things about the ship? characters deriving sth positive from women they're different to/oppositionally placed in the narrative. the ways i interpret them being alike vs. different: i think they have more core affinities than might appear (sheltered, resultant naïveté + loneliness, open-hearted, idealism wounded by circumstance), but they present and operationalise in v divergent ways, so there's space for curiosity and learning while having a foundational kinship/solace. this word is ruined but there's sth pure? about each that they'd value in the other if they themselves feel fraught. none of which need be romantic but they're hot girls so

is there an unpopular opinion you have on the ship? it would have a smaller but more compelling fanon afterlife if it wasnt ~canon rep, but greater good, i know! also bi4bi that isnt m/f is rare and fun so thats usually my treatment of them, but idc if ppl have sexuality headcanons that contradict canon, it's not going anywhere

why don't you ship it? i personally can’t see it working! my instinct is that they’re too different—there's a stick up lin’s ass obv, and kya reads to me as hippy dippy in a slightly brusque and bristly way rather than one that might help ease in people that don’t already feel receptive to her. basically, they're both probably defensive in a way that would make that initial gulf hard to bridge into actual intimacy. i also really don’t like the thing of dating your brother’s ex, this narrow second generation social/dating pool that sequel series always seem to have. meet other people that are not family friends, queens

what would have made you like it? idk, probably not much. maybe if they interacted more there would be something to jump off

despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? from what ive seen, it’s actually really cool that a fanon ship of two middle aged women has so much traction! for all its weaknesses, lok didn’t skimp on the milfage and that's wonderful

I'm not entirely sure what this is referencing?

To my knowledge I've never rated LOK ships. I have some that I like more than others, but that's just my own tastes and opinions. It's not like I think any are objectively bad or good. Shipping is all about what you like to see personally and your own interpretations of the characters. Even ships I personally don't like I don't think are "bad" ships. I just don't care for them. Any rating would just be my own tastes, like saying I like tilapia more than mackerel. And if I occasionally say Irosami is the best ship I hope people know I mean the best ship for me.

Comparatively I've written Bopal way more than Makopal, too, which I think appears as a background ship in two fics? So you really have nothing to worry about there. Makorra is actually the second most common ship on my AO3.

I've never written Lin as gay nor claimed her to be. Kyalin is a fine ship and there's nothing wrong with that headcanon but I've only written her with men myself. Bumi, Zolt, Mako. So I don't know where you got that from.

You know I love my rare pairs though so you should expect me to shake up common pairings just for the hell of it. That's how I roll. Anything you don't like, go ahead and skip! There's plenty of Makorra, too.
