How about #18 and platonic Kylex for the prompts? ❤️
18. “This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had. Of course I’m in.”
Alex and Kyle had come a long way since high school. For a while Alex wanted to hold a grudge, hated the person Kyle had become when he realised that popularity was an option for him.
And he did hold onto that, for a while, at least until Jim Valenti died. At that point Alex had one of those moments where he realised that the world was bigger than his teenage anger, and people were more than who they thought they needed to be in high school.
The first few times they started to interact again after Alex got back from his last tour he definitely felt that decade-old bitterness rising in his throat, and it took a while before he was ready to part with it. Well, a while and a few alien mishaps.
But spending time together again, Alex had started to remember why they got along so well as kids outside the forced proximity. Now, they spent time together a couple of times a week, either with their alien counterparts or without.
On this particular day though, Kyle and Alex had set up their meeting weeks earlier, because it wasn't just a casual catch up. Alex was using his tech skills to help Kyle set up the perfect proposal, and Michael had been enlisted to keep Isobel away until everything was ready.
"Give me a few broken bones, some corroded arteries even, I can fix up a human body no problem but wires and metal and... programming, no thank you," he said as he watched Alex hook his hard drive into the computer at the drive in. They (Alex) had hooked up some old monitors around the lot, then connected to the main projector. When the sun was setting he would get all of Kyle's carefully curated film segments together to play in the right sequence, and on the right monitors. At least he would when the systems started talking to each other like they were supposed to. "Seriously, thank you Alex. You don't have to do this if you don't want to, I can just find a less technological way of doing this."
Alex snorted out a laugh, looking up at him with a raised brow.
“This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had," he grinned. "Of course I’m in.”
It was Kyle's turn to snort derisively, folding his arms over his chest as he looked down at Alex who had gone back to tinkering with the connection ports.
"I'm sorry this is the stupidest? This? Not the time we were kids and I thought it would be smart to have you lock me in that rusty old fridge in summer? Or when I thought hey, you know what would be a good idea? Open heart surgery, on an alien?"
Alex raised an eyebrow because clearly, the pressure was getting to him. "To be fair, the heart surgery wasn't your plan. And it was a success."
"And the fridge?" Kyle said with a huff.
"I've seen sweatier men than that."
"Don't elaborate."
"I mean," Alex said with a grin. "Relying on Michael to keep a secret all the while spending the day with Isobel. I'll figure this bit out eventually, but he's the real wildcard here."
"He's kept bigger secrets, don't you think?" Kyle said.
"Yeah but this is a secret that will eventually be coming out, so there's really no motive for him to keep it. Hand me that hard drive would you?"
"What, you think Michael's going to ruin it?" Kyle said as he grabbed the hard drive from the backpack and handed it to Alex.
"No, I gave him a stern talking to."
"A stern talking to or I'll give you a spanking if you're a bad boy?"
"Hey, don't question the method if it gives you the results you want," Alex grinned. "And that would hardly be a deterrent."
Kyle rolled his eyes and ran his hands over his face.
"I'm just saying," he said. "Thanks, for helping."
"I'm your friend Kyle, that's what friends do when one of them wants to do an elaborate proposal," he said, looking up at him with a grin. "Especially when you're the tech-guy friend."
He turned back to the computer, finally opening up the sequencing program so he could stage the timing and hook up the visual to the right monitors.
Kyle thought about those words for a moment. His teeth dug into his bottom lip as he thought about what they meant, everything they had been through. How Alex had always upheld his end, and Kyle had let his end fall apart.
"Sorry I wasn't a better one," he said softly, and Alex turned back to him with a curious gaze.
"If you're talking about things that happened almost fifteen years ago-"
"I know I've probably said it before," he said, cutting Alex off. "But I don't really think there's a statute of limitations on treating someone like crap and then asking them to help you propose to your girlfriend."
Alex exhaled slowly, looking back at Kyle with kind eyes and waiting for him to say what he needed to.
"I just mean that I'm sorry for everything that happened between us. I guess the last couple of years especially have made me see it but I thought about it a lot after high school. I mean those friendships were just hollow and I didn't realise until I left. Thought about you a lot in those 10 years."
"I didn't really think about you," Alex said with a shrug.
"Fair, and I get that."
"I mean," Alex said with a fond shake of his head. "At least not until your dad. And I know how much it hurt me to hear about what happened to him. So all I could think was how much you must be hurting. Even thought about calling but changed my mind straight away because all I could remember was who you were when I left. And then I got back from a war and, I just didn't have the energy to hold that anger, you know? Suddenly seemed kind of stupid, to still be affected by something from high school."
Kyle made a humming sound as Alex made a satisfied sigh as he turned back to look at him.
"Is this you telling me I'm stupid?" Kyle said, eyes narrowed but a smile playing on his mouth.
"No," Alex shrugged, looking up at him with a grin. "But if that's what you took out of it I'm not going to correct you. I think I've got this all set by the way. You sure you're ready?"
"Hey, you make it look easy," Kyle said. "And you married Michael."
They chucked together, followed by a moment of quiet until Alex got to his feet.
"For the record," he said, reaching out to put a hand on Kyle's shoulder. "What I meant when I said this was a stupid plan was that you don't have to go all out on the proposal, intimate and simple works just as well."
"You think I should find a secret alien dimension and use the phrases 'I'm dying' and 'marry me' in the same sentence?" he said with a raised brow.
Alex rolled his eyes and lightly smacked his shoulder.
"Could probably meet in the middle somewhere."
Luckily, Alex had finished with perfect timing. He messaged Michael to bring Isobel down, and by the time the truck was pulling up the sun was shedding a soft orange and pink glow over the horizon.
Alex watched Kyle exhale heavily as he heard the doors closing and gave him a nudge with his elbow.
"Too late to back down now," he said, and Kyle turned to him with soft eyes.
"Thanks Alex," he said, nodding to him with that nervous excitement brewing inside him. "Really, I mean it."
Alex rolled his eyes again and reached out to pull Kyle into a hug. They had probably done it in the years since they reconnected, but it felt like the first time, the start of a friendship fully renewed, leaving the stubbornness of their past behind them.
They broke apart when Isobel's voice called out somewhere across the lot, Alex reaching over to start the sequence for Kyle.
"Go on," he said. "Really no turning back now."
Kyle grinned, one last tap to Alex's shoulder as he ran towards his place.
As Alex watched him disappear between the old pallets and the screen, Michael slowly crept up beside him.
"That was adorable," he teased.
"Shut up," Alex said, leaning into him as they found a vantage point to watch.
They'd all come such a long way since seventeen, and in a weird way, Alex wouldn't change a thing.
send me a pairing and a prompt from this list 💕

2x02 Coda
Alex avoided the compound he’d set up for Operation Resurrect Max. He’d stopped by a few times to make sure everything was up and running but otherwise he steered clear. Michael had made himself very clear that he didn’t want to see Alex so Alex tried to respect that. Instead, he’d changed the locks at his father’s bunker and set up shop there. The only person who knew about it was Kyle and that suited Alex just fine.
It took him longer than he would’ve liked to get the folder together. In between helping Maria look for Mimi (and avoiding her any other time lest he catch her and Michael together), helping Liz with Rosa, dealing with his father and Flint, and occasionally doing his actual job, he didn’t have much time. It was a good thing he didn’t need much sleep these days.
“Hey,” Alex called as he and Kyle separated. They’d caught lunch together, a rare opportunity when they were both between obligations at the same time. Kyle was on his way out to the compound to help Liz with an experiment and Alex assumed Michael would be present as well. Kyle raised an eyebrow in question. “I’ve got something in my car I need to give you.”
Kyle followed without a word and Alex quickly handed the folder over. “Give this to Guerin.”
Kyle took it. “Why can’t you give it to Guerin?” Because when Alex went to his trailer he’d moved it to the damn Pony, Alex didn’t say.
“Guerin doesn’t want to see me,” was all he offered. “I’m trying to respect that.”
Kyle looked at the folder then back at Alex. “I’m not gonna play messenger for you too,” he warned. He held the folder back out.
Alex shook his head. “One time only. He was looking for information and I found it in the Caulfield files. Thought he should have it but-”
“But he doesn’t want to see you so your sending it with me,” Kyle finished. “This why you’ve been avoiding the lab? Because of Guerin?”
“Make sure he gets that, yeah? I need to head to the base.” Alex didn’t wait for a response before sliding behind the wheel and pulling the door shut.
Kyle tugged on the handle before he could pull away. Alex took a steadying breath and rolled the window down. “When do you have time to go through the Caulfield files?” He asked. “Is this why you aren’t sleeping?”
“Stop being a doctor for like five minutes, yeah?” Alex rolled the window back up and this time Kyle didn’t stop him.
---
Kyle waited until Liz left to meet Maria to pull out the folder. Whatever it was, he got the sense it wasn’t meant for anyone but Guerin.
“Hey,” he knocked Guerin’s feet off of the table. The rest of Guerin went with the motion and Kyle watched impassively as he struggled to regain his balance on his chair. When he was settled, Kyle dropped the folder in front of him. “Alex sent this for you.”
Guerin stared at it, a strange look coming over his face. “Well take it back.”
“Look, I don’t know what the hell is going on with you two but I know that you need to get over it. We need Alex here, okay? He’s a part of this team that is trying to bring your brother back to life and he refuses to set foot here because you don’t want to see him. The past few weeks he’s looked like he isn’t sleeping and now I know it’s because of this,” Kyle pressed a finger into the folder and wagged it about in front of him. Guerin’s eyes were glued to it. “He is bending over backwards to try and make you happy, he is killing himself to give you information you asked for, and what? So you can shack up with his best friend and expect him to be happy about it?” Kyle picked up the folder and rounded the table. Guerin didn’t look at him. Kyle pressed it firmly into his chest and waited until Guerin took it from him before lowering himself to meet his eyes. “Like I said, I don’t know what’s going on with you two but what I do know is Alex is doing everything, everything he can to make your life just a little bit better and just a little bit easier and you don’t seem to give a shit that you’re putting him through hell for it.”
Guerin’s eyes turned hard. For once, they seemed to lack the glaze of alcohol and the meanness that came with it. “I’m trying to be happy,” Guerin said lowly. “For once in my goddamn life I am trying to not be miserable. Alex-” he clenched his jaw. “Alex has a habit of doing that so yeah, I asked him to leave me alone. And that’s all I asked. What he does after that is up to him. He’s a big boy, he can make his own choices.”
Kyle wanted to scoff but didn’t. “We can lock Jesse Manes up,” he told him. Guerin stiffened. “We have video of him using an alien to execute my father. Combined with the files and footage from Caulfield, there is enough evidence to get him court-martialed and sent to prison for a very long time.”
“So why don’t you?” Guerin hissed.
“Because doing so would force Alex to reveal all of the Project Shepherd files. Including the ones on you,” Kyle told him. “And Alex won’t do that.” He shook his head. “Jesse knows it, too. He’s using you to keep Alex in check.”
Guerin shook his head. “That’s crap. If Alex had the means to take down his father, he’d do it.”
Kyle’s lips quirked sadly. “Not if it means hurting you. He loves you, Guerin. I don’t know why but he does. It’s pretty obvious if you look for more than five seconds, honestly.” Guerin glared at him. “So maybe try to be considerate of that? You’re putting him through a lot. Just-” he shrugged. “Try not to be an asshole? Are you capable of that?”
He should’ve expected the shove.
“Fuck off, Valenti,” Guerin ground out. “And stay out of my business.”
Kyle pulled himself off of the ground and left without a word, kindly not pointing out that Guerin was clutching Alex’s folder to his chest like it was a lifeline.

there's always an open door
ID plus context quotes: 1) Kyle shutting the locker and turning to Alex in the Project Shepard bunker saying, ‘I know you don’t like me, and that’s cool. But all of this is a lot. If you ever want to drop the 0800 hours soldier jargon we can get a beer‘; text: somewhere past tomorrow; 2) Michael squinting at where Kyle and Alex stand outside of Caulfield asking Alex, ‘You under the weather, maybe experiencing selective amnesia about what the hell this dick put you through‘ and Alex saying ‘Look High School is ten years to the left’; 3) Kyle sitting down next to Alex on the cabin’s couch, gently hitting his leg and then rubbing his hands together, Kyle saying ‘We were a good team’ and Alex saying ‘Yeah, until you grew one chest hair and instantly became a nightmare of a bully’; 4) Kyle approaching Alex outside of prom and Alex turning towards him, then a close up of both their faces, Alex telling Kyle to say it again; 5) Kyle running to the truck where Alex, Liz, and Max are outside of their high school, Alex scoffing and then saying ‘I’ll take high school cliches for $500 Mr.Trebek’; 6) Kyle and Liz dancing in the diner after it was closed as Alex (along with Rosa) plays guitar in the background and Maria dances; 7) Maria sitting at Alex’s house, saying ‘I like Kyle, but he was terrible to you for so long. How have you forgiven him?’ and Alex standing in front of her saying ‘Kyle and I aren’t friends. I’m doing this because its my responsibility. I’m doing this for Liz. You know, something I learned in the last ten years is sometimes showing up is the most important thing. You can’t stay mad forever.’; 8) Alex passing Kyle his flask as they sit next to each other in the surgical gallery/viewing area, Kyle smiling at the flask and Alex smiling after he takes it; text: it’s better than it seems

i feel like s2 ruined Malex (& Michael for me). Like we're told they're this cosmic endgame but none of Michael's actions actually align with this. He tells Maria he loves her, he tells her he would have done the same for her and a few minutes of Malex emotionally hugging before Michael leaves Alex with his captors before going on a date with Maria doesn't change that. At this point Alex Manes x Happiness is my only ship. Also let Kylex rise because they are my favourite dynamic in this show.
Okay, this is what I mean when I say They-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named ruined things just by existing. Malex is still cosmic to me, they just have to show me that cosmic connection. It was easy to believe when Alex was clearly Michael’s only ‘weak’ spot, but if you introduce other people who Michael blatantly cares for more than he’s ever shown Alex, then it ruins everything else.
I still have hope that season 3 will deliver on showing us that cosmic connection though. Let’s just hope CAM can’t get her hands on the script. She’s done enough damage.

Are people really out there being petty about a ship name? I mean so far I have seen Maneforrest, Manesforrest, Forlex, and Falex. Forlex seems to be rising to the top as the most popular, but I like Maneforrest for my own personal reasons, though it’s being tagged on my blog as “alex x forrest” anyway because that’s my tagging system. You can use whatever name you want. Gosh knows I’ve been alternating between Marichael/Miluca for a while now and there was a period when Kylex fans were using Valentines? It’s just a name. It’s really not that deep. *shrugs*

FIC: Casual Sort of Love (Part 1 of 2)
Pairing: Kylex (Kyle/Alex)
Summary: "We don't need complicated reasons for having sex. Sometimes wanting to get laid is good enough." (And then they caught feelings.)
Rating: Teen and up (This fic is about sex but there’s nothing graphic)
RNM Week Prompt: Day 3 Fic Prompt: Quick and Dirty
Part 1
(Part 2 will be Day 7)
"Can we at least admit that was a waste of our time?" Kyle flops down onto the bed. Alex's bed, not the one on the other side of the motel room. He stretches out alongside Alex and his shirt rides up, revealing a slice of naked skin.
They spent two days driving to follow up on a promising lead only to find nothing. Alex does agree that it was a waste of time. But they couldn't have known that.
"Imagine, we could have been doing all the productive things people our age do on a Saturday night," he says sarcastically. "Get drunk, get high, get laid…"
A slow smile spreads across Kyle's face. "You know… We have everything here we need to get laid."
Alex blinks.
Kyle begins to tick off on his fingers. "Two adults capable of consent. A bed." He bounces on it lightly, enough for it to rock with an obscene sound. "Condoms…"
"You brought condoms to a recon mission?"
Kyle points to himself. "Do you thinks it's safe for a guy who looks like me to travel  without condoms?"
With a snort, Alex shakes his head. "Does that line work on anyone?"
"Is it working on you?" Kyle rolls onto his side to face Alex. His gaze moves down the length of Alex's body. Like he's actually looking. Like he actually likes what he sees.
"Do you want to have sex with me?" Alex asks. He isn't trying to hide the incredulity that creeps into his voice. The conversation is one of the most bizarre he's ever had. And his family hunts aliens.
"I think the more important question is, do you want to have sex with me?"
Alex looks Kyle up and down. There is no denying that Kyle is an attractive man. He might not be tall, but all his other physical attributes make up for that shortcoming. From gossip, Alex also knows he is not terrible in bed, at least with women. And he is one of the few people these days that Alex feels comfortable with. Strange as that might be, their history considered.
But out loud he says: "Just because I'm gay doesn't mean I want to sleep with every handsome guy I meet."
Kyle smirks. "So you admit I'm handsome?"
Alex surges forward and kisses him. It's a dare as much as it's a permission. He expects, in the back of his mind, Kyle to chicken out. To push him away.
Instead, Kyle's hand shoots up to the back of Alex's neck and pulls him closer. And in that instant, all Alex's barriers break and all he can think of is the feeling of someone's hands on his skin, someone's mouth on his own.
In the end, they never do anything worth getting those condoms. Hungry mouth and wandering hands, bodies moving together in blind search for pleasure. It's enough. It's more than enough.
Kyle's fingers twist in Alex's hair roughly, and he gasps Alex's name against Alex's skin and then it's all over.
Alex watches Kyle's face for a few minutes before he kicks him out of his bed.
"You look like a blanket hog," he justifies his decision.
ooo ooo ooo
They don't talk about it afterwards. Alex expects things to get weird and uncomfortable between them; he thinks Kyle will pull away in shame. But nothing shifts between them. The next day, Kyle leans brings him coffee and leans against his side while they study a map.
Things are normal from there on.
Until that time they almost die again.
Alex keeps his foot on the gas long after the gunfire is a just a memory. It's a marvel no one stops them for speeding, ridiculous as it would feel. He isn't sure either of them would be able to pretend they are not running away from a scene of disaster.
In the driveway, Kyle slams the car door shut.
He marches into the cabin without looking back, a stormy energy surrounding him.
Alex follows after his friend. He doesn't expect Kyle to spin towards him. Or hands grabbing his jacket. He instinctively braces for a fight when Kyle's mouth find his.
"I thought we were going to die," Kyle groans against Alex's lips.
And Alex's hands are grasping Kyle's shirt. A button snaps. He is pushed against the wall and when Kyle's thigh begins to work its way between his, he doesn't think twice about parting his legs.
They barely make it to the bed.
It's rough and life-affirming and all that matters is Kyle's hot breath and the beating of his heart.
They are alive.
Afterwards, they lay next to each other, not touching. Alex watches Kyle's chest rise and fall.
"I thought you were straight," he blurts out into the silence.
Kyle laughs. "So did I. Until the last year of college." Kyle grins as if he is telling a funny story. "My lab partner had the most addictive smile. And really nice hands. We went out a few times before we decided it wasn't going to work. But he opened my eyes to a whole scale of possibilities."
ooo ooo ooo
The third time, it's Alex's initiative.
"My favorite part of the decryption process," Kyle says sarcastically. "Staring at the screen for half an hour while the computer does its thing."
And Alex puts his hand Kyle's thigh impulsively. "I can think of something we could get done in half an hour. Possibly twice."
He is still testing the limits of Kyle's interest.
A grin breaks across Kyle's face. A few moments later he is holding a square of silver foil. "Isn't it lucky we wear the same size?" he asks when he hands it over.
ooo ooo ooo
"Why are we doing this?" Alex asks after the fourth time.
They're lying on the bed, the space between their bodies filled with hot air. Kyle's fingers are still mapping the expanse of Alex's skin, gently. His gaze follows his touch, his lips are curved in a soft smile.
Alex doesn't feel like getting up. It's the post-coital laziness and not wanting the hassle of putting his prosthesis on again. But it's also the comfort of another person's closeness and the aesthetics of Kyle's head on his pillow. He could take this moment and live in it forever.
"We're adults, Manes," Kyle says and he looks away from Alex. "We don't need complicated reasons for having sex. Sometimes wanting to get laid is good enough."
Somehow, it doesn't satisfy Alex.
ooo ooo ooo
It's after the eighth or tenth time that Alex realizes they can't keep doing this. Not because he doesn't want to but because he keeps waiting for it.
Because this time it starts with Alex sitting behind the wheel of his car and listening to Kyle breathe and waiting, hoping, for Kyle to touch him. To give him a sign that when they reach their destination, they are going to get naked and their bodies tangled together.
Because it continues like this: Kyle's fingers outlining Alex's jaw, kisses down Alex's neck, mouth pressed right over his heart. And his heart beating just for this moment. Because he feels like Kyle is touching him, looking at him, and not just finding pleasure in a warm body.
Because it ends with Kyle's head resting on his shoulder and fingers tracing the base of Alex's ribs. Because Alex realizes he wants this. He wants to be a part of Kyle's nights and mornings. He wants to be the one Kyle thinks about when he is alone. He wants to be the best part of Kyle's day, because Kyle has become the best part of his.
The last – the only – person he's felt this way about was Michael Guerin. And he and Michael can barely talk now. Michael let himself care for Alex and paid the price for it and now he is as good as lost to Alex.
He can't lose Kyle, too. It hurt the first time, when they were kids. Now he needs him more. Not just as a friend but a partner; they work well together.
"This was the last time," he says at the same time as Kyle asks: "Want to grab a dinner?"
Kyle springs up to a sitting position. "What?" And oh, great, now Alex will have to have an entire conversation while looking for his clothes and putting on his prosthesis. That's one way his leg, or lack thereof, gets in the way of his life. It's difficult to just storm out of someone's bed. Fortunately, he's practiced in putting it on fast.
"I don't think we should be sleeping together," he says while pulling on the sleeve. Then, deciding it's not strongly worded enough, he amends: "I don't want to keep doing this."
"Did I do something wrong?" Kyle asks, his voice small but frustrated. His fingers touch Alex's shoulder.
Alex grabs his t-shirt and pulls it over his head, effectively throwing Kyle's hand off his body. "No," he says. "No, you've been great." He sighs. "I could give you a whole speech about it being me, not you, which is true. But we're not dating and I don't owe you one."
Kyle flinches and Alex instantly wants to apologize and explain himself. If he wanted to, he could kiss that sad expression right off Kyle's face and replace it with that look Kyle gets when Alex's places his mouth against his skin. A part of him wants to. He hates that he'll never get to do it again.
He hates the hurt in Kyle's eyes and how flustered Kyle suddenly appears.
But being direct and perhaps a little harsh will keep the conversation short.
"I like being your friend," he says. "You made the past few months not suck. But I don't think we should be adding benefits."
Kyle swallows. "Did I… I don't know… Push too hard? Did I come on too strong?"
Alex zips up his jeans. "I told you, it's me, not you. I can't keep doing this."
Kyle flops down onto his back. "Whatever, Manes," he says, staring at the ceiling.

Baby it's alright (You can use me anytime) - kylex
ao3
kylex. alex has a panic attack and needs a distraction afterward, but he and kyle have different ideas of what that is
(tw panic attack)
Voice already yelling as he wakes himself up, chest pounding and heartbeat half up his throat, Alex can’t help but cough in adjustment. Once his yell has quieted, his lungs give way to hyperventilating, and even though he can tell from the motel alarm clock’s red display across the room that he isn’t in Iraq, he can’t force himself to calm down. Not immediately, when his eyes haven’t adjusted, not even when he can hear Kyle beside him trying to count him down. Air is lacking, his left leg is throbbing– even though it isn’t, because it isn’t even there– and when his chest slowly stops tightening he still has to listen to Kyle asking him to name highschool teachers in an attempt to disrupt the thoughts. When he’s through, he feels too vulnerable and bare. More than anything in the world, regardless of the fact that Kyle is a doctor now, he wants to hide and pretend that nothing happened and that his PTSD doesn’t exist but it had only been a matter of time when he wasn’t taking his sleep meds. How could he, knowing that they were constantly chasing danger in the hopes that they would help people? He couldn’t be caught off guard.
He wants to tell Kyle to fuck off, because God does he wish he wasn’t weak, but he doesn’t. Just says, “I’m gonna take a shower”, because the sweat feels too real and reminds him he’s alive in ways he doesn’t want to be right now.
When he gets out (luckily the shower had been accommodating) Kyle has already laid back down on his side of the bed facing the window and its horrible styled curtains. Alex isn’t stupid, he knows damn well Kyle is only pretending to be asleep now for him, but he takes the out and lies down without speaking anyway.
Neither of them fall asleep, and Alex watches the red numbers of the digital clock tick later and later, before finally huffing loudly. “Want to just go over files again?”
“Not really,” came Kyle’s voice in response, all too quick. When he turns over, their faces feel all too close despite the almost foot gap. Alex can still feel the warmth in a way he doesn’t like, not after months of being single and too busy to have someone in his bed in any real way. “I hit my brain power quota for aliens about 1pm yesterday.”
“I need a distraction,” he admits.
Through the dim light, he can almost see Kyle smile; feels the movement as the man leans ever so slightly forward. “So use me.”
“Use you?” Alex asks, dumbfounded. A few months ago Kyle had admitted he wasn’t straight, but then the time to ask further questions had lapsed and Alex had pushed the thought out of his mind so often and deep that he had all but forgotten until now. Now, when his face has heated up to what surely would have been bright pink if he didn’t have the mercy of the dark-lit room.
“Yeah,” Kyle repeats, sounding like this is the most natural, obvious conclusion. “I mean I know you’re not into me, but–,”
“Valenti, I’m not going to use you,” Alex says firmly. “Why the fuck would you let anyone use you?”
Kyle huffs. “Just sex, Manes. We’re adults.”
“Also human, with feelings,” he argues back. Maybe it’s stupid to be in arms over something like this with Kyle of all people, the confident former jock now turned doctor that still had a six pack and megawatt smile. There’s just something so casual about the offer that Alex can’t get over, like Kyle’s too familiar with being nothing more than a warm body. In the past, Alex might have thrown the description at Kyle himself, but now? Kyle was worth far more than just that.
“You don’t have to read into it,” Kyle replies. “More than welcome to just say no.”
“That’s not– I mean when was the last time you even had a relationship?”
Groaning, Kyle retreats back to his side and lays on his back. “What the fuck does that matter?”
“Just answer the damn question.”
Kyle scoffs, audibly. “I’ve never had one. Not unless you count Liz back in high school. My dad died, then I was trying to get through med school when I had never really studied before, and then I was a surgeon. No one actually wants to date a surgeon when they realize that it comes with the package of long hours and cancelled plans from being on call. At least when it’s sex no one gets their feelings hurt.”
Still staring, he tries to decipher what exactly he should say. Or what he even wants to say. It isn’t like Alex has any room to talk, not after being in the army with the threat of “don’t ask don’t tell” always looming around, not to mention his hang up on Michael. Yet here he is, pushing none other than his high school bully, albeit reformed, to think about the implications of continual random sex.
“You know–,” Alex starts, pausing when his heartbeat starts to spike. Why was he the one embarrassed? “You know you deserve more than that, right?”
“I take my offer back,” is the annoyed response.
Feeling frustration rising right back, Alex snaps, “Why do I even try? One mature conversation about emotions and you repress just as much as you tell me not to.”
“Of course I’m going to repress,” Kyle shoots back angrily. “I try to pretend I only want to have sex with you and then on top of shooting me down you go into a lecture about what I deserve with someone who isn’t you!”
All of the sudden Alex can’t breathe again, and even if it’s for much different reasons than what now felt like forever ago in the same night; and his entire body tenses. “What?”
“You heard me,” he grumpily answers. “Look, I’ll just sleep in the truck.”
Alex reaches out to grab his arm before Kyle can finish sitting up. Fingers tight around the muscle of his arm, he says. “Wait.”
“Wait what?” Kyle asks, hesitant now. Sitting up more himself, Alex readjusts and replies, “Wait. I wasn’t exactly saying that you deserve someone who wasn’t me.”
“Then you were saying what?”
“I was saying that if we have sex, it’s not going to be me using you.” he says, nerves still on edge despite the fact that Kyle had confessed his own feelings not just minutes ago.
Kyle’s smiling hesitantly if Alex is making his expression out right through the dark, and his voice sounds ever so sly as he asks, “If?”
“Well you did take your offer back,” he replies, equally amused at the turn.
“I could be persuaded to reconsider.”
Alex chuckles. “Even if there might be emotions involved?”
“Especially then,” Kyle answers, but before their words can go any further Kyle has twisted himself around to mirror Alex and melted against his body in a way that was new and intoxicating.

Alex’s gaze is already starting to drift away again over Kyle’s shoulder in the direction of where Liz and Michael are standing at one of the research tables in Michael’s bunker, heads bent over something alien-science-y.
“Is he bringing sexy back and I’m missing it?” Kyle deadpans, “Oh noes, however will I cope?”
That finally gets a rise out of Alex and he turns to glare at Kyle, the tips of his ears turning pink. Well, the view is really nice from where Alex is standing, he has to say.
“You’re just jealous.”
“Of Guerin?” Kyle puffs himself up to his full height, which is still sadly shorter than either Alex or Michael. “That’s the dog’s bollocks! I could run circles around that bloke.”
“You’re going to embarrass the shit out of Liz with that accent, and probably get yourself decked in the pub. Please ask her to record it, I don’t wanna miss out,” Alex retorts with a sly grin.
