───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
Sagara never believed in magic. He believed that if you wanted something, you had to use your fists to take it and for the most part, this worked out well in his favor. But there was one thing he desired above all else that no amount of violence could secure for him. Lord knows he had tried multiple times only to make things worse.
Sagara wasn’t a romantic. He rarely ever thought about love and he had no desire to be in a relationship. Of course, when he spies an attractive girl, he flirts with her to try and win her over as most guys tended to do. And most of the girls were receptive to this, loving the bad guy persona. And he was most definitely a bad guy. While the girls hoped to find a relationship with him, though, he had no desire for such things. A make out session was enough for him before he was over them.
Things changed when he met you, though.
You were completely loyal to Mitsuhashi and that infuriated him more than anything.
It had started upon his first meeting with you. He found you attractive so he tried to flirt with you, but instead of throwing yourself at him like so many others had, you didn’t even acknowledge him. That didn’t deter him and made him more determined to get your attention, one way or another. When he learned of your connection to Mitsuhashi, he was confident that he could win you over after beating the blonde’s ass and showing off how strong he was.
He was wrong.
Your indifference toward him quickly morphed into hatred. You hated his guts for what he had done and couldn’t stand even being near him. Sagara told himself that this didn’t bother him in the least, but he was lying and he knew it. It bothered him so much that it was all he could think about. He kept trying to find ways to atone for his past sins and win some favor with you, but it seemed like the harder he tried, the more he pushed you away.
He just couldn’t wrap his head around why he cared so much about what you thought. So he did what he always did when he was at a loss – he headed to his grandmother’s house to lay everything on the table and get some much needed advice.
───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
The autumn wind was cold as Sagara walked down the street, tugging his jacket tighter around his body. Orange and brown leaves crunched beneath his feet with each step and several houses were already decked out to the nines for Halloween despite the fact that it was only the first week of October. Personally, he didn’t see the appeal in it which he found funny since his own grandmother adored the season. Several of her decorations even stayed up all year ’round.
A particularly chilly breeze hit him, prompting him to pick up his speed to get to her house. He rolled his eyes at the large ghost statue that stood beside the gate and he resisted the urge to topple it off. When he reached the front door, he poised his hand to knock but then paused, trying the knob. It was unlocked and he scowled, pushing the door open.
“Obaa-san, I told you to keep the door locked!”
“Oh, dear. Did I forget again?” The grey haired woman stepped into the hall from the living room, a gentle smile on her face. “It’s been quite the busy day getting the last of the decorations out of storage. Come, come, I’ll make you some tea so you can warm up.”
His annoyance quickly faded as he followed the older woman into the kitchen. “You should’ve waited for me. I would’ve helped you.”
“I know, but you’ve been working so hard lately. I didn’t want to bother you.”
“It’s never a bother, obaa-san.”
She smiled warmly as she poured him a cup of tea, steam rising up from the surface. “There’s still plenty left to do, don’t you worry.” After setting the cup in front of him, she turned to check on the cookies in the oven.
Sagara reached for the cup when something darted by in his peripheral vision. His head whipped around to the left side of the kitchen, narrowed eyes scanning the area but nothing was there. Just as he started to relax, he noticed a thick, leather-bound book sitting at the end of the table. Strange markings were etched into the cover and painted silver. He had never seen this book in her home before and something about it just felt… off to him.
With a glance to his grandmother, who still had her back to him, he slid the book over to him. His fingers tingled as they touched it but he didn’t hesitate to open the leather flap, turning the cover open. The pages were tan, somehow managing to look both old and new at the same time, and the words were handwritten, sprawled in looped, black lettering. They were hard for him to read but he managed.
The first page read: Jemma Green’s Spellbook for aspiring young witches and wizards, ver. Japan.
What the hell? Was this simply another one of his grandmother’s Halloween props? It must be, yet… something lingered at the back of his mind that he couldn’t quite put his finger on.
“Obaa-san, where did you get this?”
“Hm?” She turned around to see what he was referring to. “Oh, that. What a funny thing, it just appeared on my doorstep with a note saying I should try it.”
“Probably just a prank.” He frowned, adding under his breath. “And if I catch who’s pranking you, I’ll kill them.“
“You can take it if you’d like, dear.”
He resisted the urge to scoff as he flipped through the pages. What the hell did he want with a fiction book about magic? He didn’t read on a good day and when he did, it certainly wasn’t the fantasy genre that he went for. Just as he was about to close the book and shove it in the trash, one of the pages toward the back caught his eye and made him pause.
ATTRACTION SPELL; This spell can be used to get others to like you more or feel romantic toward you. Perfect for those trying to win over that special someone.
Sagara immediately thought of you and pictured you confessing your love for him. And with that simple image in his head, he was sold on the idea of magic and decided he would try this spell. What did he have to lose? If it failed, nothing would change. But if it worked… he felt excited at the idea.
He expected the list of ingredients to include strange items such as cat bones or bat’s blood like they typically did on TV, but the items it called for were fairly normal items that were easily purchasable. Hell, looking at them he figured he could probably order them all today!
For this spell, you will need the following items: * Lavender * Sage * Rose Petals * Pomegranate Seeds * A Quartz Crystal * A Sachet Bag
His grandmother placed the plate of cookies onto the table with a smile. “Can I get you anything else, dear?”
He reached for a cookie but paused as he was about to take a bite. “You don’t have to have any quartz lying around, do you?”
───── ⋆⋅🎃⋅⋆ ─────
You stifled a yawn as you headed toward school, rubbing at your tired eyes. Why did you think it was such a brilliant idea to stay up until nearly four in the morning binge-reading manga? You were content in blame Mitsuhashi since he had highly recommended the series before he went to sleep. What were you supposed to do, just ignore your curiosity until morning? You didn’t operate that way and the manga turned out to be every bit as good as he claimed it was.
You weren’t really paying attention as you rounded the corner so you ended up smacking right into someone. You stumbled backward, feeling hands grasp your upper arms to steady you. “Sorry ’bout that,” you mumbled in apology.
“You okay?”
You recognized that voice and your eyes snapped up, locking eyes with his. “Oh. It’s just you, Sagara.”
He loved the way you said his name, especially when it wasn’t full of venom. He found himself smirking at you, placing his hands into his pockets. “You should watch where you’re goin’, Y/N.”
“Meh. Too early to care.” You shrugged a shoulder before brushing past him.
He hesitated for only a moment before following after you, making sure to stay one step behind since he didn’t want to anger you. He honestly couldn’t tell if the spell had worked or not. It’s not like he expected you to suddenly throw yourself at him, but he was hoping for some sign that you no longer hated him. You hadn’t glared at him or spat his name, but that could be just because you were tired. It wasn’t concrete evidence that there was at least some progress being made.
The wind picked up, dragging fallen leaves down the street.
The morning was an especially chilly one and you couldn’t hold back the shiver as goosebumps rose on your exposed arms.
“Why aren’t you wearing a jacket?” He frowned, shrugging out of his own before holding it out toward you. “Here, take mine.”
You paused, eyeing the jacket suspiciously but when the wind kicked up again, you didn’t hesitate a moment longer to slip into it. It was still warm from his body and the smell of his cologne lingered on the fabric. “Forgot it. Thanks.”
Despite his efforts, he felt his cheeks growing warm. He couldn’t believe what was happening. Not only did you accept his offer, you actually thanked him for it. He had offered you his coat before but you had just glared at him, refusing to accept any help from him even if you froze to death, but now you had accepted it with very little resistance. And thanking him for it!
He cleared his throat, suppressing the grin that wanted so badly to spread across his face. “Y/N… do you have any plans after school?”
“I never do.”
“There’s this new cafe that opened a few blocks from here. They’ve got new Halloween-themed stuff. Do you… wanna go with me after school to check it out?” He found himself holding his breath as he waited for your answer. What was this new feeling he was experiencing? Hope?
You were quiet for several minutes, not even glancing at him as you continued on down the street. Just as he was starting to believe that you had no intention of answering, you finally replied with a simple, “Sure.”
Sagara’s heart skipped a beat within his chest and a wolfish grin spread across his lips. “I’ll pick you up after school, then.”
“No.” Your nose wrinkled and you finally looked at him. “I’ll meet you there.”
While he did feel disappointed by this, he knew that beggars couldn’t be choosers. He also understood that you probably didn’t want your friends, Mitsuhashi especially, to see you with him.
“Alright,” he agreed. “I’ll see you there, then.”
One Year Later
The bell above the door chimed as someone stepped inside the store. You didn’t turn away from the shelf you were placing items on even though it was directly in line with the door. “Welcome to Spoopy Halloween. Let me know if you need help finding anything.”
“Can you help me find the way into your heart?”
You quirked a brow at Sagara, taking note of how he was cringing at his own words. “Really?”
“Let’s never talk of this again.”
“Oh, I’m telling everybody you said that.” You snickered, setting the box onto the ground before closing the distance. Your arms rested lazily around his waist, your face half buried against his shoulder. “I’m so tired~ How much longer before I can go home?”
He smiled as he held you in his arms, his hand lightly combing through your hair. “‘Bout thirty minutes and you’re free, love.”
“Ugh, too long,” you groaned, giving him a squeeze before reluctantly returning to your work.
“Don’t be dramatic. You’ll make it.”
“Or will I?” You quirked a brow at him and he scoffed, lightly shoving your head.
“You better. Now get back to work.”
You clicked your tongue as you picked up the cardboard box, carefully setting the ceramic black cats onto the shelf. Sagara grabbed one of the boxes sitting behind you, placing ceramic jack-o-lanterns beside the cats. With his help, you completed the task in record time. You turned to take the empty boxes into the back of the store when a customer appeared at the end of the aisle.
“Excuse me,” the young woman called politely. “Can you help me?”
“Yup.” You nodded. “What can I do for you, miss?”
“I’m not sure what size costume I need…”
“No problem. We’ve got a measuring tape in the back if you’ll come with me.”
While you helped out the customer with her costume, Sagara decided to take a walk through the store. He wanted to find something for you to celebrate your anniversary but he wasn’t sure what to buy. Would you think less of him for choosing a Halloween-themed gift? Several items were inspected and promptly rejected by him before he finally found what he believed to be the perfect gift for you – a llama plush dressed as a wizard. It even had its own little wand sewn against its front leg. Given your love of llamas, he figured you would adore the item and he was sure you hadn’t seen it or you would have mentioned it as you did every time you found a llama item.
As he reached out to grab it, something fell over on the shelf behind him with a soft thump. He turned, expecting to see another customer there but the aisle was empty. Curious, he approached the shelf to see what had fallen and if it had broken, but he made a shocking discovery – sitting on its side between a dragon statue and a box of vampire teeth was Jemma Green’s spellbook.
He couldn’t explain why, but he was positive that it was the very same book that he had once possessed. It had gone missing nearly a year ago, right after his first date with you to that cafe, and it looked no worse for wear than it had back then. But how was that even possible?
Sagara glanced to both ends of the aisle but there was no one in sight. He carefully picked up the book, the feel of the leather against his fingers all too familiar to him, and he flipped to the back of the book where the love spell was. He found himself smiling as his fingers brushed over the lettering. He had never believed in magic until he found this book. It had done the one thing he couldn’t – deliver the love of his life to him.
“What are you smiling about?”
He slammed the book shut in surprise, hiding it behind his back as he turned to face you. “Nothing.”
Your brow raised at that as you approached, reaching for the book. He didn’t fight you, pretending to be interested in the goblin mask hanging on the shelf to his right. You hummed as you flipped through the pages. “A spellbook? When the hell did we start selling these things?”
“I don’t think you do.”
“Eh?”
He took a breath, knowing how crazy he was going to sound. “This is the same book I lost a year ago.”
“So… you’re being stalked by a book?”
He rolled his eyes, scowling at you. “No, idiot. This book, it’s… magic.”
“Yeah, that’s kinda the point of a spellbook.”
“No. I mean real magic.”
You just stared at him blankly, trying to decide if he was being serious or not.
With a scowl, he snatched it back, flipping through the pages. “I’ll prove it to you. Look.” He held up the book so you could see the page with the love spell on it. “I used this spell one year ago to make you feel attracted to me and it worked! Two days later, you agreed to our first date at the cafe.”
“First off, that was not a date.” Your lips twitched up as you held back your laughter. “And I didn’t agree to go out with you because of some spell, you idiot.”
“If not the spell, then why? You couldn’t stand me before I used this book.”
“I saw you in town with your grandma. I thought you were bullying an old woman at first so I decided to follow you.”
He frowned, brow furrowed.
“You were so kind and patient with her… it was a side of you I’d never seen before.” You smiled, reaching out to cup his cheek as you looked into his eyes. “I always thought you were a complete asshole who was incapable of any form of kindness or empathy. After what you did to Mitsuhashi, I thought you were a psychopath but… seeing you interact with her like that… you were so attractive at that moment and I started to think differently about you. I wondered if you were truly capable of being a good person.”
He didn’t know what to say and despite feeling embarrassed, he couldn’t break his gaze away from your own.
You pecked his lips before smiling. “Thank you for not being a psychopath, even if you believe that love spells work.”
He scoffed, covering the lower half of his face with his hand as he looked away. He still wasn’t entirely convinced that the spell had done nothing to contribute to his relationship. To be honest, he had been worried when you agreed to go with him to the cafe. He worried that, once you started showing him attention, he would lose interest like he always did, but things were different with you.
You had stolen his heart long before he even realized it himself.
“Besides, everyone knows you can’t force love. Not even with magic.”
His wide eyes snapped to you. “Wait, you love me?”
Though you had been seeing each other for a year now, those words had never graced either his lips nor yours. You thought about just denying it or pretending it didn’t happen, but then you changed your mind.
With a smile, you reached out to take his hand in your own. “I love you, Sagara Takeshi.”
A wide smile came over his face, his eyes lighting up like you had never seen them before, and his reply was breathy. “I love you too.”
“How about we hit up that Halloween cafe once my shift ends? I want another ghost smoothie.”
He gave your hand a squeeze, bringing his lips onto yours. “Yeah… let’s do that, love.”
