Au Moyen-Âge, elles perdirent tout à cause de la chasse aux sorciers. Leur château et leurs terres furent incendiés, de nombreux Selwyn périrent, et leur haine des Moldus naquit. Ils durent se cacher jusqu'à la mise en place du Code International du Secret Magique, en 1689. Entre ces deux dates, les Selwyn ont tenté de retrouver leur pouvoir et leur fortune. Elle s'est enrichie grâce à des expériences sur des sorciers possédant des pouvoirs supplémentaires, et à un marché noir de leurs organes vendus à ceux qui étaient assez naïfs pour croire que posséder le coeur d'un mage X dans son salon lui donnerait le même don. Ils réunirent ainsi plusieurs millions d'écus. Mais leurs plans furent contrecarrés par une jeune femme nommée Edaline Skyberry, promise d'Hadès Selwyn. Elle avait réussi à obtenir assez de preuves pour dénoncer le trafic des Selwyn. La famille fut donc acculée, haïe de leurs pairs, dépouillée une seconde fois de leur fortune, cette fois ci des trois quarts, qui revinrent aux Skyberry. Avec cet argent, l'honneur et l'admiration qu'ils suscitaient, ils partirent vivre aux États-Unis, où ils fondèrent leur si célèbre dynastie. Quant aux Selwyn, qui nourrissaient une haine sans nom envers eux, ils se promirent de se venger une fois leur richesse recouvrée. Pour cela, ils procédèrent par des méthodes plus classiques, mais toujours sombres : alliances avec des clans qui avaient réussi à se protéger des Moldus, mensonges, manipulations, trahisons, parfois assassinats. Un siècle plus tard, ils avaient obtenu le double de ce que les Skyberry leur avait volé. Mais ils gardaient toujours une rancune envers eux, qu'ils ne savaient pas comment assouvir.

En attendant le bon moment, ils évoluaient dans la société des Sang-Pur anglais. Leurs crimes passés n'avaient cependant pas été oubliés par tout le monde, mais les Selwyn étaient des diamants noirs : infiniment rares, et donc précieux, sombres, mystérieux, magnifiques, craints et désirés à la fois. Ils construisirent, tout au Nord de l'Angleterre, un immense manoir tout en longueur, gris ardoise, à l'architecture gothique. Il n'y avait rien autour, à part des dizaines et des dizaines d'hectares de cultures, mais les Selwyn protégèrent quand même leur domaine avec un portail très puissant. C'était une forteresse impénétrable. Pour assurer la sécurité, ils créèrent autour du manoir un labyrinthe ensorcelé, qui n'obéissait qu'à une personne de sang Selwyn. Pour entrer, il fallait se piquer avec l'épine d'une rose noire. Si le sang correspondait, le labyrinthe guidait la personne vers le manoir. Si le sang ne correspondait pas, il perdait la personne, avant que les nombreux pièges ne la tuent. Il ne valait mieux pas s'y risquer sans que les Selwyn ne soient au courant de votre visite, si vous n'en étiez pas un. Les siècles passèrent, les Selwyn restaient ces sorciers très puissants, fascinants, élégants, intrigants. Leur lignée se perpétua, dans les traditions de la pureté du sang. Le 18 mars 1972, de l'union d'Orion Selwyn et Calliope Malefoy, naquirent des jumeaux : Adonis et Ulysse Selwyn. Ils étaient très proches, se confiaient tout, néanmoins, ils étaient toujours en compétition, et Adonis gagnait. Il était le préféré de ses parents, et ça, Ulysse le voyait bien. Ça lui brisait le coeur, mais il n'en gardait pas rancune à son jumeau, ni à ses parents. Il était très loyal à sa famille, les adorait.

En grandissant, Adonis devint un prodige de la magie noire, un Serpentard très populaire et surtout craint à Poudlard. Il devint de plus en plus indifférent à ses parents et son frère. Il se montrait toujours poli et respectueux, et il était profondément d'accord avec leurs idées, mais il ne les aimait pas. Il n'en avait rien à faire. Il se rendait de plus en plus compte qu'il faudrait évincer Ulysse de l'héritage avant leur majorité. Il décida de se montrer patient, s'appuyant sur la confiance que lui vouait son jumeau. Et il eut raison : quand ils avaient seize ans, son frère lui apporta la raison sur un plateau d'argent en se confiant à Adonis à propos de son homosexualité, et de son amour pour Cleophus Abraxas. Adonis prévint Orion et Calliope, qui déshéritèrent leur fils et lui interdirent de poser le pied dans leur domaine. Néanmoins, ils ne pouvaient altérer le sortilège de la magie du sang apposé sur la rose noire. Techniquement, Ulysse pouvait donc revenir, mais il ne le fit jamais. Il avait tellement honte de lui. La perte de sa famille, la trahison d'Adonis, tout cela l'avait brisé. Il trouva refuge chez son meilleur ami, Cleophus, et tenta d'enterrer ses sentiments. Il changea, devenant de plus en plus froid et insensible. Il regarda l'amour de sa vie se marier à Luciana Falls, et avoir un fils. A la mort de Luciana, un espoir réveilla le coeur d'Ulysse, qui avoua enfin ses sentiments à Cleophus deux ans plus tard, aussi dur que cela fût. Il s'avéra que Cleophus les partageait, mais se refusa à une relation pour se consacrer à son fils. Ulysse, le coeur brisé, accepta ses raisons, mais préféra s'isoler. Il ne revit plus Cleophus, ni l'enfant dont il était le parrain, avant des années. De l'autre côté du miroir, Adonis avait hérité d'une partie de la fortune à ses dix-sept ans, et de l'autre moitié et du domaine à ses dix-neuf ans, quand ses parents moururent de la dragoncelle. Il avait été promis, dès un très jeune âge, à Gaïa Nott, dont il était tombé follement amoureux, et réciproquement. La passion entre les deux jeunes gens était puissante, sincère. Ils se connaissaient depuis l'enfance et partageaient la même dévotion à la magie noire et ce même rêve : vivre pendant des siècles, en restant jeunes de corps, et rendre aux sorciers leur suprématie sur les Moldus.

Ils élaborèrent leur plan dès l'âge de douze ans : ils devaient trouver la Pierre Philosophale et la fontaine de Jouvence. Sauf qu'en 1992, la Pierre fut détruite par Albus Dumbledore et Nicolas Flamel, son créateur. Adonis et Gaïa, loin de se décourager, voulurent lui arracher ses secrets avant qu'il ne meure. Ils le torturèrent, et Flamel leur révéla la recette pour créer une autre Pierre. Le 23 novembre 1993, leur premier enfant naquit. C'était un fils, Erwan Adonis Orion Selwyn. Il avait les yeux bleu sombre de son père et les cheveux blond pâle de sa grand-mère. Adonis et Gaïa avaient vingt-et-un ans. Ils étaient conscients que leur fils les ralentirait dans leurs projets, mais l'aimaient déjà de tout leur coeur, et avaient hâte de lui transmettre leurs valeurs, et espérait qu'il grandirait avec des parents maîtres de la Mort et du monde. En 1994, Voldemort revint, désirant toujours l'immortalité, qu'il voulait obtenir grâce aux Reliques de la Mort, que le couple croyait légendaires. Ils se mirent à son service en apprenant l'Occlumancie pour ne pas que leur maître sache qu'ils voulaient attendre qu'il mette la main sur les trois Reliques pour les lui voler et devenir les Maîtres de la Mort. Adonis et Gaïa manipulaient Voldemort, effectivement, bien loin des préoccupations de la guerre.

Ils se marièrent le 10 juillet 1992, à l'âge de dix-neuf ans. Ils étaient de fidèles Mangemorts, les plus cruels et légendaires des assassins. Ils étaient aussi craints que le Seigneur des Ténèbres lui-même, ce qu'heureusement il n'apprit jamais. En parallèle du tombeau de Moldus qu'ils semaient sur leur passage, faisant plus de victimes que tous les Mangemorts réunis, le couple infernal s'adonnaient à l'alchimie afin de créer une seconde Pierre Philosophale, tout en cherchant la fontaine de Jouvence à l'aide de légendes. Le 2 mai 1998, Voldemort mourut, la paix revint. Adonis et Ga��a n'en avaient que faire – ils étaient bien au-dessus du Seigneur des Ténèbres. Sauf qu'ils étaient désormais activement recherchés, étant les deux sorciers les plus dangereux de Grande-Bretagne. Ils appliquèrent un sortilège de Fidelitas sur le domaine Selwyn, et devinrent les deux Gardiens du Secret. Ainsi, ils étaient introuvables, et le restèrent pendant des années encore. En 2002, Adonis et Gaïa s'allièrent à un dénommé Tobias Wilson, un Sang-Mêlé qui voulait faire tomber la dynastie Skyberry. Ils ne lui demandèrent aucune raison, mais l'aidèrent dans l'ombre. Chaque Skyberry mourut de la baguette de Tobias, Adonis ou Gaïa, qui accomplirent enfin la vengeance de la famille Selwyn à la famille Skyberry, écho à une rancune datant de cinq siècles.

Le 12 juin 2004, Cassandra vint au monde. Elle n'était pas prévue, mais sa famille l'adora dès le premier regard. C'était une enfant adorable, avec les cheveux d'or et les yeux de Gaïa, des taches de rousseur, un caractère doux et une intelligence vive. Elle devint rapidement la chouchoute de la famille. Elle fit ses preuves de magie bien plus tôt que son frère, à cinq ans, lorsqu'Ulysse Selwyn découvrit que la magie du sang de la rose noire était plus puissante que le sortilège de Fidelitas. Donc, il pouvait tout de même trouver, voir et entrer dans le manoir. Il était le Gardien du Secret involontaire. Adonis et Gaïa l'ignoraient. Ulysse les dénonça, et les Selwyn durent fuir très rapidement, laissant toutes leurs recherches sur place, ne réussissant à prendre que leurs baguettes magiques et une tente magique. Désespérée de perdre son foyer, une onde magique destructrice s'échappa de Cassandra, noircit l'herbe et fendit le sol. Les Selwyn avaient tout perdu, mais se réjouirent de la magie naissante de la cadette. A partir de là commença leur cavale. Adonis, Gaïa, Erwan et Cassandra logeaient des maisons moldues vides, en dépit de leur dégoût, ou bien dans la tente. Pendant un an, ils traquèrent Ulysse Selwyn, qui paya sa trahison très cher, mourant en 2010 de la baguette de son frère. Celle d'Ulysse revint à Cassandra, qui utilisait auparavant des baguettes volées aux Nés-Moldus qu'ils tuaient.

Puis la cavale reprit. Dans le monde entier, cette fois. Un jour sur place, des meurtres, des attentats, puis ils transplanaient, dormaient, et recommençaient. Une vie très instable, surtout pour une enfant. L'éducation d'Adonis et Gaïa oscillait entre la manière douce, qui s'apparentait à de la manipulation mentale carrément involontaire, et la manière forte - des tortures, la plupart du temps. Erwan avait plus connu la seconde que Cassandra, car il avait mis un point d'honneur à protéger sa petite sœur de la violence, physique et psychique, de ses parents. Le jeune homme ne blâmait pas ses parents pour ce qu'il avait subi. Leurs troubles mentaux les innocentait de tout à ses yeux. Il n'en voulait pas non plus à Cassandra d'être la préférée de Gaïa et Adonis, il aimait bien trop sa petite sœur pour ça. Elle représentait à ses yeux tout ce qu'il y avait de beau au monde. Il voulait la protéger de tout ce qui pourrait lui faire du mal. Malheureusement, il la voyait s'enfoncer dans les ténèbres encore plus jeune que lui.

Gaïa et Adonis avaient expliqué à Cassandra dès sa prime enfance, des livres sur les génocides de sorciers au Moyen-Âge en guise de preuves, que les Moldus étaient des êtres atroces qui avaient massacré les sorciers pendant des siècles. Les Nés-Moldus, eux, volaient la magie des sorciers et s'incrustaient incognito dans le monde magique pour en prendre le contrôle et exterminer à terme tous les sorciers. Cassandra était terrifiée, alors, ses parents lui assurèrent que ça n'arriverait pas, car une communauté de héros était là pour défendre le monde magique. Ces héros étaient les Mangemorts, et les Selwyn en faisaient partie.

Adonis et Gaïa dessinèrent un tableau épique à leur fille : les Moldus et Nés-Moldus en monstres assoiffés de sang magique, et eux en héros qui sauveront le monde. Cassandra, déterminée à faire le bien, devint sans hésitation une tueuse aguerrie. Dès sa première manifestation de magie, elle accompagna dès lors les Selwyn en « mission » - c'est-à-dire, tuer le plus possible de Moldus et des Nés-Moldus, de façons toutes plus atroces mais créatives les unes que les autres. Les parents avaient créé un sortilège très puissant qui effaçait la Trace de leurs enfants. Entre tortures et jeux morbides, les cadavres s'amoncelaient sur leur passage, un quart d'entre eux causés par une fillette aux allures d'ange. C'était déjà une sorcière très puissante, et Gaïa et Adonis la flattaient, lui disaient qu'elle était très courageuse, une héroïne invincible, comme tous les Selwyn, et qu'ils étaient en bonne voie de débarrasser le monde des Indignes, comme ils les nommaient. Le pire, c'est qu'ils voyaient véritablement les choses comme ça, même s'ils romancaient l'histoire pour Cassandra. Ils avaient servi le même discours à Erwan, mais avec moins d'héroïsme, et bien plus tard, ce qui faisait que le jeune homme avait une vision plus réaliste des choses. Alors que la culpabilité rongeait son aîné, la fillette suivait ses parents avec des étoiles dans les yeux, convaincue au plus profond de son coeur d'être une héroïne.

A sept ans, Cassandra se révéla être une Née-Legilimens, ce qui la rendit d'autant plus précieuse pour ses parents. Elle pouvait entendre les pensées des gens, leur en transmettre, voire leur instiller des migraines. Ce pouvoir fut d'abord difficile à supporter pour la fillette, qui pouvait désormais entrer dans l'esprit dépressif de son grand frère, lire les pensées de ses victimes. Elle était dans un brouhaha constant. Heureusement, ses parents lui apprirent rapidement l'Occlumancie, comme ils l'avaient fait eux-mêmes et avec Erwan. Cassandra apprit à se servir de son don pour le mal – enfin, elle pensait que c'était pour le bien. En mai 2014, Adonis et Gaïa lancèrent un assaut contre le domaine Selwyn. Ils voulaient reconquérir leur manoir pour continuer leurs recherches sur la Pierre Philosophale et la fontaine de Jouvence. Malheureusement, l'orgueil était le défaut fatal des Selwyn. Les Aurors se doutaient qu'ils reviendraient, et veillaient par dizaines à l'extérieur et à l'intérieur du labyrinthe (Ulysse leur avait révélé tous les secrets du manoir avant de mourir, y compris comment empêcher le labyrinthe de les tuer). Adonis et Gaïa savaient qu'ils étaient là, mais pensaient qu'ils pourraient les vaincre à l'aide du Sortilège d'Ubiquité. Malheureusement, la baguette d'Ulysse n'obéissait pas à Cassandra, elle se fit repérer et prendre en otage. Elle s'en voulut pendant très longtemps, persuadée que tout était de sa faute, jusqu'à ce qu'elle comprenne la science des baguettes magiques et reconnaisse qu'elle était trop jeune pour maîtriser un tel sort.

De leur côté, Adonis, Gaïa et Erwan, aussi puissants qu'ils étaient, se firent acculer par le nombre incroyable d'Aurors déployés pour les neutraliser. Erwan reçut un Sectumsempra qui faillit le tuer, mais il réussit à récupérer sa baguette, à annuler le sort et refermer ses plaies. Adonis et Gaïa se firent emprisonner avec des chaînes qui les brûlaient à chaque mouvement, et traîner jusqu'au centre du labyrinthe, où était piégée Cassandra, dans un cercle de feu. Ils allaient se rendre, lorsqu'Erwan, même blessé et faible, arriva et tua la trentaine d'Aurors qui les escortaient. Le chef des Aurors, Jacob Hunter, prit Cassandra comme bouclier humain, lui lançant également un Sectumsempra, et Adonis et Gaïa se sacrifièrent pour leurs enfants. Hunter, le seul Auror survivant, annula le sort sur la fillette et transplana avec le couple au Ministère. Il pensait Erwan trop faible pour transplaner, mais il réussit à le faire, avec sa sœur. Adonis, Gaïa et Erwan furent jugés. Le Magenmagot ignorait quoi faire de Cassandra, la plus jeune meurtrière de l'histoire de la magie anglaise. Ils décidèrent de l'envoyer dans un orphelinat moldu le temps que le sort de sa famille soit décidé. Ce furent les plus longs mois de sa vie. Le jour de ses dix ans, elle échangea quelques mots avec un Né-Moldu nommé Sean Coleman. Pensant qu'il venait de lui voler sa magie, Cassandra entra dans une terreur et une rage folle et blessa Sean avec sa magie innée. En attendant leur procès, les Selwyn furent enfermés quatre mois à Azkaban. Le sacrifice ultime des parents pour leurs enfants consista à affirmer qu'Erwan et Cassandra avaient agi sous Imperium. Le Magemagot les crut, les deux enfants Selwyn furent libérés, mais le couple le plus dangereux du monde fut soumis au baiser du Détraqueur, et leurs corps consumés.

Erwan hérita de la fortune des Selwyn et du domaine. Il y vécut avec Cassandra. Ils étaient deux âmes en miettes, perdus sans leurs parents, traumatisés par leur passé malsain et instable, tourmentés par des questions sans réponses sur le bien et le mal, le vrai et le faux, mais essayaient de se soutenir mutuellement. Le jeune homme plaçait le bien-être de sa jeune sœur en priorité, et l'inverse pour Cassandra. Ils s'adoraient. Pendant un an, ils pansèrent leurs blessures dans ce cocon qui n'appartenait qu'à eux. Ils firent du domaine Selwyn leur foyer, à nouveau, sans jamais aller dans le sous-sol, que dédiaient Adonis et Gaïa à leurs recherches personnelles. Ils avaient toujours défendu à leurs enfants d'y descendre. Ils étaient tous les deux fatigués, épuisés même, de se battre contre ça. Ils voulaient simplement laisser les Moldus tranquilles dans leur monde. Erwan renonça à leur but bien plus facilement que Cassandra, qui ne ressentait pas encore la culpabilité par rapport à ses crimes. La famille Selwyn était connue et haïe de tous. Lors de sa première rentrée à Poudlard, Cassandra en fit les frais. Les murmures derrière son dos, les regards empoisonnés, les pensées meurtrières de ses camarades... Sa première semaine à Poudlard fut très solitaire et douloureuse. La jeune fille, répartie à Poufsouffle, ne comprenait plus rien, elle était perdue... Tout ce qu'elle avait cru vrai se révélait faux pour la plupart des gens. Qui croire ? Elle ne pouvait avoir confiance en personne. Ses parents lui avaient appris qu'ils étaient les seuls à lui vouloir du bien, que les autres, les Indignes, voulaient la détruire, voler sa puissance. Cassandra était terrifiée et confuse.

Au milieu de ce chaos intérieur, elle rencontra deux personnes qui changèrent sa vie. Deux amis, Shel Archer et Camélia Abraxas. Cassandra les accepta à ses côtés d'abord, accepta leur présence à ses côtés. Elle découvrit l'amitié, une amitié enfantine, faite d'anecdotes, d'aventures innocentes, de découvertes et de rires. Ils étaient les seuls qui ne la voyaient pas comme un monstre. Elle dut lire leurs pensées à chaque seconde pour être sûre de pouvoir leur faire confiance. Les années passant, leur amour les uns pour les autres grandit. Ils formaient un véritable trio inséparable, uni, et les autres élèves et professeurs le voyaient. Ils voyaient Cassandra Selwyn sous un nouvel angle, et étaient convaincus qu'elle s'était fait manipuler de A à Z par ses parents. L'esprit de Cassandra a toujours été empoisonné par ce que ses parents lui avaient mis dans la tête. Elle se débattit pendant des années contre elle-même, perdue, bouleversée de comprendre que tout ce qui lui avait été enseigné était erroné. Elle ne savait pas à qui se fier, ce qui était bien ou mal, vrai ou faux, elle culpabilisait de la libération de son avis, de ses pensées. Elle était encore esclave de ses parents, qu'elle adorait des années après leur mort.

Il lui fallut du temps, énormément de temps, un grand courage et beaucoup de souffrance pour se défaire de l'emprise mentale de Gaïa et Adonis. Cassandra dut changer sa vision complète du monde. Dans sa quête de vérité, elle avait deux alliés certains : Shel et Camélia. Ils apprirent à faire confiance à cette fille dangereuse, mais en réalité perdue, à l'aider à démêler le vrai du faux, le bien du mal. Ils firent preuve d'une grande patience. Pendant l'été séparant sa quatrième année de sa cinquième année, Cassandra invita ses amis chez elle pour la première fois. Ensemble, ils pénétrèrent dans le sous-sol interdit et découvrirent les recherches d'Adonis et Gaïa Selwyn. Cassandra entendait toujours leurs voix dans sa tête, mais avait décidé de les ignorer. Elle voulait la vérité avant tout. Elle ne supportait pas que les personnes qu'elle aimait le plus au monde l'ait manipulée. Les années passant, elle vint à penser que les Moldus étaient différents, même si elle resta persuadée que les sorciers étaient supérieurs car dotés de magie. Ses préjugés et la peur qu'elle ressentait envers les Nés-Moldus s'effacèrent au fil des ans. C'est si simple à résumer, et pourtant, cela lui demanda une remise en question incroyable.

A la fin de ses études, la jeune femme fit de longues études pour devenir potionniste-alchimiste. Elle ne tenta jamais de poursuivre des recherches pas naturelles comme celles de ses parents, mais créa des remèdes pour nombre de maladies, sauvant notamment sa belle-sœur Camille Abraxas d'un cancer des poumons. Elle qui n'avait jamais su que détruire, guérissait. Aromantique et asexuelle, Cassandra n'eut jamais aucune relation amoureuse ou sexuelle, n'en ressentant pas l'envie. S'en rendant compte, à seize ans, elle eut d'abord peur d'être détraquée, avant de découvrir que cela n'avait aucun lien avec son passé, que beaucoup de personnes étaient comme elle. Cela lui permit de s'ouvrir à la communauté LGBT+, dont elle ignorait totalement l'existence, et les soutenir. Pouvait-on se défaire véritablement d'une telle emprise, d'un tel contrôle psychique ? Plus Cassandra se battait contre elle-même, contre ce qu'on lui avait enseigné, recherchant la vérité à tout prix, apprenant à penser par elle-même à l'aide de preuves irréfutables, plus cela devenait facile pour elle de démêler le vrai du faux, le bien du mal. Cela resta son combat éternel, cependant.

Cassandra Selwyn est une personne très intelligente, logique et raisonnée. Elle ne comprenait pas du tout le second degré étant enfant. C'était une stratège brillante, avec une mémoire puissante et de grandes capacités de raisonnement. Elle a une immense soif de connaissance et de vérité. Elle déteste les petits bavardages inintéressants, étant capable de débattre de mille sujets de façon brillante, de science ou de philosophie – particulièrement ce dernier domaine, qui lui a été indispensable lors de sa quête de vérité. La jeune fille est très observatrice et rationnelle, elle raisonne toujours de façon froide et scientifique, même dans les situations qui ne s'y prêtent pas. Elle est très paradoxale et incompréhensible si on ne suit pas sa logique. Introvertie, elle a une certaine crainte des autres, en-dehors de son cercle d'amis, sa famille et des amis de ses amis. covid mints

The covid self-test kit got stuck in the Haines vending machine. I crouched down, the hems of my blue skirt brushing against autumn leaves on the ground, as if making eye contact with a plastic bag could somehow coax it out of its home.

Two pieces of mint stared back, their gaze steady, silently curious. They were about one centimeter in radius, with red and white stripes on their rims, like the pair of old-fashioned glasses my middle school English teacher used to wear. Out of place, out of space.

I’ve heard all sorts of theories about why the mints are there. The theory that seems to make the most sense is that the mints help you salivate before taking the covid test. “Except,” I remember countering, “no college student would sit down and eat candy before taking the test.” Someone else said the mints are there to hold the packet down. LA does occasionally get windy, but even so, why mints of all things?

I always throw the mints away. Maybe that’s why the packet refused to come to me, sensing the disdain in my eyes. Food coloring, excess sugar, and god forbid, peppermint.

It was the slightly curved stripes on the mints, though, that reminded me of that phrase, uttered in the underbelly of Haines, that will be part of me for the rest of my life. The red on the rim bled into the white inner circle; if you squint you could see a whirlpool.

She said, “I’m stuck in a circle of radius zero.”

When the machines in my head race to a screeching halt, when all that remains are the groans of unoiled cogs and rusted hinges, when I’m seen lying in the cracks of the deserted streets of my favorite town, too small, too weak, too tired, to do anything.

When every bit inside is set to zero. Invalid, invalid, invalid destinations; there’s no place to go. Invalid, invalid, invalid information, kicked out of everyone’s memory; there’s no place to stay. A circle of radius zero, a dot on the number line, a speck of ink that shouldn’t exist.

The two pieces of mints continued to stare back. With their big, round Doctor-Suess-style eyes, they seemed so innocent, as if I were the crazy one to have gone on a trip down memory lane nine months later, to that specific September afternoon, and relate them to exhausting episodes of spiraling. They’re just candies, after all, right?

I jammed my front arm into the vending machine, bones pushing painfully against metal, as my fingers hunted for the plastic bag. Nothing. Leaning even closer in, my ribs scraping against the lower row of the machine’s teeth, I tried again. Nothing.

Ouch ouch ouch ouch ouch.

I tore my arm free. The flap bounced back before swinging forward and slamming shut. The packet fell, gingerly, quietly, almost gracefully, to the bottom of the machine. It must have done a one-eighty on its final descent, for I could no longer see the mints, only a sheet of paper with test instructions printed out in a boring font. I lifted the kit out.

The mints ended up in the trash. Peppermint, old glasses, whirlpools, and all that.

First creation and most recent creation of 2020: I deleted all my old blogs and restarted everything this year. These Kiki’s Delivery Service GIF headers were some of the first things I made. And my most recent one is this Pride and Prejudice set.

One of your favorite creations from 2020: This Hoist the Colours lyrics set. Frankly, I wasn’t sure the color scheme or the concept of GIFs inside letters would work, but I really like how it turned out.

A creation you’re really proud of: This Black Pearl set. It’s part of an ongoing series about ships in POTC but the Pearl is special so I wanted to make it really special.

A new style you tried this year and a GIF set that uses it: I tried as many things as I could this year (and thank you so much to all the creators who made tutorials! I owe you so much!), but the overlay transition style is something that’s become a big part of my recent stuff. This Team Cap set was one of the first things I used it on.

Your favorite coloring: Norrington’s death scene. I actually made this set out of spite (LMAO) because I couldn’t stand the scene’s original coloring, which was a combination of sickly shades of yellow and cyan. I wanted to do better than that. I think I did?

A creation that took you forever: Norrington as Odysseus. This took me so long because it has some sensitive imagery and I basically let the set stew a bit after finishing each individual GIF to give myself time to think “Is this actually a good idea?”

Your creation from 2020 that received the most notes: This Pintel and Ragetti set, and I’m so glad that even in 2020 a lot of people still love them!

A creation you think deserved more notes: The ASOIAF book fandom is pretty small, so I think it did well all things considered. But this manip of Ben Barnes as Theon Greyjoy. (Alfie was amazing in the role, yes! But Ben fits the book description, so I wanted to make a fancast set.)

A creation with a favorite scene/quote: I really love the lighting of the beacons and the lines “Gondor calls for aid” / “And Rohan will answer,” so this LOTR set.

A new fandom you joined and a creation you made for it: I’d been watching Studio Ghibli films since I was a kid, but I only really joined the fandom this year. I made a set for Ocean Waves, one of their lesser known films and which I’d only watched this year!

A creation you made that breaks your heart: Norrington / Davy Jones parallels. It fits, ya know? And it hurts. And if my heart breaks, I’m breaking my followers’ hearts along with it because pain should be shared. LOL

A “simple” creation that you really love: This La Haine set. I learned a lot about color grading B&W while working on this one.

A creation that was inspired by another one (add both your creation and the one that inspired it!): So much of what I make was inspired by other people’s awesome work! But I learned a ton from Sarah’s poster tutorial (she mentioned techniques in there that I keep in mind for everything I do now, like sharpening methods, etc.), so this Curse of the Black Pearl poster edit. And it was inspired by everything under this tag!

A favorite creation created by someone else: This is literally the hardest to answer. There are so many amazing creations that came out this year alone. The size limit increased to 10MB, which meant everyone was free to experiment with huge GIF sizes, loads and loads of colors, and techniques using multiple GIFs combined into one. I’m sorry I can’t mention every single one I’ve adored, but here are some of my absolute faves. This Witcher set by @yenvengerberg (what even is this TALENT? This set is pure genius). This Wondertrev set by @timothyolyphant (everything is PERFECT: the coloring, the color scheme, the frames, the fonts!). This Old Guard set and this Sam Wilson set by @momentofmemory (I am not exaggerating when I say that these are some of my fave GIF sets of all time). And of course by the insanely talented person who tagged me @oswiins and whose sets make me make pterodactyl noises: this Doctor Who poster (I stared at it for an overly long time, such BEAUTY!) and this Julie and the Phantoms set (so many layers to it! This isn’t something you just look at, it’s something you stare at and study and think “Holy shit, these people are doing all this immense work for free and I am so lucky to be able to see it”).

Some of your favorite content creators from the year: Again, there are too many to mention! My mum is pretty upset. A few days later I go into his room and try to patch things up. Turns into a deeper chat. He feels like I haven’t been a good brother to him, he gives the example of not looking out for him on his first days of school. I say I’m sorry, it’s because I’m a bit scared and insecure. In retrospect I regret a little laying so much weakness on the table, seems his interactions/ways of acting around me have changed a bit. Still not sure how I feel about it all. Considered getting a gold tooth with Matthew. Play with cats, enjoying them more and more. Rave in Dalston, good music from Asia and beyond. Looking at magazines. Not doing much work at all. Finally give up my apartment in Beijing. Mile End park. Cycle further and further East to a pedestrian bridge I didn’t know existed. Get onto the beach and into the Thames water. Interview Akito. Begin writing more, after few months of wiling away the summertime. My friend Emmy gets married in Rwanda, I give him some money as a wedding gift which he tells me he used to buy his wife’s dress. Ludo’s now house more for days and nights of you guessed it. Borough Market more, with Emma. Alexandra Palace walk and famous sandwiches after. Tate Britian new lights. More time at Muzi’s. Signing up for cycle courier. LYL Radio show. Shave head. Take acid and it hurts my stomach. Camden Arts Centre with Muzi. Christmas party with friends. Birthday. Cake with Muzi, presents and Indian takeaway from family, walk in Vicky Park with Ludo and Karim plus battered sausage and chips. Christmas at home nice and warming meal. Evening to Ludo’s place with more friends. Boxing day with Matthew, pints and then more at his house in Peckham all night long. Next day is tough! Giant turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey curry. Buy first NFTs. New Year’s Eve stay in at Muzi’s, one drink and a cake.

grew up in a pretty rough and dangerous neighbourhood in dc, filled with Street Rats

parents: irresponsible, violent, addicts, basically only kept him for the benefits. home life was pretty miserable where he picked up most of his traits and habits.

but at one point it got so bad, his grandma reported them and took him in. they served some time in jail. he doesn’t know what they’re up to now, doesn’t care to find out either.

no one’s perfect -- his dad obvs gets it from somewhere -- but his grandma's love doesn’t make him cry.

gma works as a housekeeper for a big time politician fam in d.c. and would get a few smol jobs for him as a pool boy or whatever else rich ppl have

but then his gma got ill and they don’t have medical insurance or da money for treatment so he dropped outta school and continued 2 swindle, in d.c. or where the money was tbh

gd thing about d.c. is politicians and they have lots of money !!!

it felt weird to scam people by himself. he wasn’t used to working alone so he started off small: hung out in bars, targeted politicians. end up in a hotel - they paid for it. long story short he got enough ammo to blackmail them into giving him $$ or he’d sell photos/videos to journalists ... n we all know how homophobic politicians are :clown emoji:
