Sex Education
I said goodbye to this Netflix hit last night, finishing the fourth and final season. I'm sad to have to say farewell to some of the characters -- the long-suffering Otis, conflicted Adam, but most of all to Maeve, the beautiful and plucky underdog, playing the shite hand she was dealt the best she can.
The last two episodes bordered on public service announcements on today's sexual mores and conventions, but I can forgive that (even as I learn from it). The notion of continuous, affirmative consent during intimacy would have appeared to be written in Swahili to the teenagers of my time. It seems necessary if quaint in these litigious days but the 'mother-may-I' approach avoids confusion and the courts.
I'm now working my way through Based on a True Story (who knew Kaley Cuoco could act?) and surprisingly a blast from the deep past -- LA Law, which is so old it doesn't even letter-box on the screen. But in just the first episode it dealt with sexual harassment in the workplace and featured a transgender character. Heady stuff for 1986.
