Sanremo 2024 Has Come To A Close

In the Eurovision fandom, there's a joke around that Sanremo takes a very long time on the final night. It's funny because it's true. And as an American Eurovision fan, I get to use my time zone to my advantage and get the news bright and early!

So, Italy has chosen..."La Noia" by Angelina Mango!

For the first time since 2016, Italy has finally decided to send a SOLO woman to Eurovision, which is truly a beautiful thing to see. However, Italy had female representation with Måneskin in 2021 (THANK YOU VICTORIA! *and thank you to @circes-grotto for reminding me*) I've seen around that this is a fan favorite, so with proper staging and a good spot in the running order, Italy can keep its consistent streak up! I'm excited to see it!

Congratulations, Angelina! I look forward to seeing you perform in May!

Wow, okay, lmao, so. My step-dad and I just drove to the gas station in the Czech Republic - most Germans in my region do that, the border isn't too far away and the gas is cheaper but still German so better for our cars' gas tanks. I decided to put on a playlist with this year's Eurovision songs on it, the first one being Europapa from Joost Klein - and yes, little Kari grew up and has a car now, lol, yay me! It's an Opel Corsa from 2014. 👀❤️

Guess which song got stuck in my ears? Yep, Europapa. 😂

Gosh, honestly, it's a bop! I couldn't understand the hype behind it at first but now that I heard it, I'm in love! Doesn't take away from the fact that my personal favorite, out of sheer pride lol, is still Always on the Run from Isaak of course. ❤️🫶🏻 But still! It's such a party hit! Joost knows what he's doing, and whatever it is he's doing, he does it well. 👀💅🏻

Special mention goes out to the song La noia from Angelina Mango! That one has me in a chokehold, I'm obsessed. And of course Rim Tim Tagi Dim from our boy Baby Lasagna, beloved. 🫶🏻❤️

And yes, of course, No Rules! from Windows95Man is awesome too, it has a special flair to it, like it could be the anthem for teenagers that have their parents' house to themselves for a week, lmao.

I can't wait for this year's ESC! Unless Isr*hell doesn't get kicked, then I'm boycotting.

Angelina Mango will represent Italy in Eurovision with her song "La Noia".

This latin-pop inspired song is about first-world problems. It's a satirical look into the lives of the privileged, talking about how truly the people who have never experienced hardship actually suffer more than Jesus did (I'm not exaggerating, that is a direct reference made in the pre-chorus). The title roughly translates to "Boredom."

This makes the decision to reference Cumbia in the chorus kind of interesting. Cumbia is a style of music and dance that originated with African and indigenous slaves in Colombia. It was originally a courtship dance of the desperately poor and oppressed; a little bit of stolen joy. So referencing it both serves to highlight the hypocrisy of the character the singer is playing, and maybe feels a little bit awkward in that she has dubbed her song "a Cumbia of boredom" which is a bit of an oxymoron.

Sanremo stagings are generally pretty sparse. Singers are generally not encouraged to have props they can't carry down a flight of stairs (aside from musical instruments), and dancers seem to only be hired by acts that are there for a fun diversion, while acts that are seriously trying to win rarely use them. So, I wouldn't use her live performances as much of an indicator of what her Eurovision staging will look like. Personally, I kind of want to see her in some high glam outfit, draping herself over a fainting couch dramatically. Give that image of the fabulously wealthy person going "woe was me" in a way that people who don't speak Italian would be in on the joke. Additionally, as someone who actually likes dancers at Eurovision, I think it could really drive the point home if she is juxtaposed with Cumbia dancers. Have the commentators explain the origins of the dance in the postcard, and have that part of the lyrics and the cultural aspects behind it highlighted
