Localish LA stopped by La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, known as La Plaza, in downtown Los Angeles, across the street from the historic Olvera Street, to check out the museum and their current exhibits. The vibrancy, the light and all of the works of imagery and iconography. This is a celebration of Chicano, a celebration of Chicano/Chicana creativity.

"We're the only a museum dedicated to telling the history and culture of Latinos in Los Angeles," said Esperanza Sanchez, associate curator at La Plaza. "We have two floors of exhibitions." The museum and cultural center is free to the public.

"It's opportunity to feel seen, appreciated and valued," said Amelia Herrera Robles, a resident of Sylmar. "L.A. Memo Chicana Chicano art from 1972 to 1989," is 'La Plaza's' newest exhibition. "This is not your typical Angeleno art exhibit," said a  guest curator, "It's a refreshing look at a history that I'm encountering for the first time."

In 1983, geneticist Mary-Claire King (left) explains to Abuelas de la Plaza de Mayo [Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo] Nélida Gómez de Navajas (middle) and Estela de Carlotto (right) the technique that will be used to identify their grandchildren stolen during the last civic-military dictatorship of Argentina (1974/6-1983) and prove their kinship in court, el Índice de Abuelidad [the Grandparentage Index]. It's estimated that between 400 and 500 children were taken throughout this time.

Estela was able to hug her grandson, Ignacio Montoya Carlotto, nieto #114 [grandchild #114], in 2014.

Nélida died in 2012 and did not get to meet her grandchild. It was announced two days ago, 28 July 2023, that his identity has been restored. 11 years after she died, 40 years after this photo was taken, and 46 years after his birth to a illegally detained and still disappeared mother, Cristina Navajas, he's been found. His father and brothers are here for him. It is still a victory.

I remember my mom telling me how she had to hurry in the aisles of the market to buy basic food in 1989. She had to hurry because behind her was the guy with the labeler, putting the new prices on everything, every day. Hyperinflation legends that I listened too, amazed of how absolutely insane that that sounded. Running, hurrying because bread was expensive, but, for a margin of a few minutes, of a few meters, it was less expensive.

Today I hurried a little bit before the guy with the new price labels, to buy cheese and a can of beans. And I remembered the stories from my mom, telling them to me in a "can you believe it" tone.

May you get to the bread before the new price reaches you, compa.
