SX Shortlist: Free Party Highlights for Saturday, March 18
Here are our picks of the best free parties for Saturday! Before you head out, make sure to check out full details on tons of band lineups with set times at Showlist Austin and Mxdwn. The folks at Keegan’s List, FSG, ATX Concert, and OpenBarATX have the scoop on all the free parties. Have fun out there — see y’all next year!
Rachael Ray’s Feedback Party 10am–4pm • Stubb’s, 801 Red River St. • No RSVP! This is one of the biggest parties of the entire festival – it’s fun if you can manage to get in, but plan on getting there well before dawn to line up to even have a shot. Free food if you’re willing to wait awhile. The lineup features Weezer, Action Bronson, De La Soul, Margo Price, The Drums, The Districts, and several others.
The Art Lounge SXSW Popup 10am–6pm • The Art Lounge @ MakerSpace, 411 Brazos, Suite 99 • RSVP requested Free drinks and food, plus music and works by local artists.
Quantum Collective presents Southwest Invasion 2017 11am-7pm • Whole Foods rooftop, 525 North Lamar Boulevard • RSVP requested Hanson is your headliner for the final day of this great rooftop party. Austin brewery Hops & Grain will be slinging some beers, and you can also grab some swag from socially responsible sponsors including Clif Bar, ZICO, Califia Farms, OCHO Candy, Health-Ade Kombucha, and Rishi Tea.
Brooklyn Country Cantina 11am-2am • Licha’s Cantina, 1306 East 6th Street Country, roots, and Americana music showcase with some free drinks.
Do512 Presents: The Big One 11:30am-6pm • Barracuda, 611 East 7th St. Big ol’ party with bands including Broncho, Tkay Maidza, WAND, Sweet Spirit, White Reaper, and others. Get there early to avoid a big ol’ line.
SXSW Puppy Party 2K17 Noon-4pm • Lustre Pearl, 94 Rainey Street Free Tito’s Vodka cocktails (if you download the Bumble app) plus cool dog swag. This one is really fun but get there early to avoid a dog-gone line.
The Future of Music Noon-2am • Shiner’s Saloon, 422 Congress Ave. • RSVP requested (rarely checked) This shindig has the best lineup of ATX bands every year, and there’s rarely a wait to get in. Make sure to pop in and check it out, especially if you’re an out-of-towner.
Sound On Sound Fest & BrooklynVegan Present: Lost Weekend Noon–6pm • Cheer Up Charlie’s, 900 Red River St. • RSVP requested Fun day show full of opportunities to discover new bands. The party is sponsored by Bell’s Brewery, Thunderbird, and Deep Eddy Vodka, so there will probably be some drink specials as well. Today’s acts include S U R V I V E (5:10pm), Robyn Hitchcock (5pm), Cherry Glazerr (3:50pm), Big Thief (3pm), Merchandise (2pm), Girlpool (1pm), Sad13 (noon), and many others.
Waterloo Records Day Party Noon–6pm • Waterloo Records, 6th and Lamar • No RSVP! Four-day event with free parking lot shows and autograph signings. Today’s lineup features Ron Gallo (6pm), Mike Posner (5pm), The Shelters (4pm), Hippo Campus (3pm), Cherry Glazerr (2pm), Colony House (1pm), and Matthew Logan Vasquez (noon).
South By San Jose Noon-8pm • Hotel San Jose, 1316 S. Congress Ave. • No RSVP! Today’s lineup: Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Merchandise, Cherry Glazer, PWR BTTM, Khruangbin, Ron Gallo, Slow Dancer, and Peterson Brothers Band.
Party in my Pants Unofficial Free Showcase Presented by LiveVibe Noon–7pm / 9pm–1am • Little Woodrow’s, 520 West 6th St. • RSVP requested Lots of good bands at the day party, culminating with Run River North at 6pm. Late-night afterparty features music by DJ Richard Gear.
British Music Embassy 2–6pm • Latitude 30, 512 San Jacinto Blvd. • RSVP required Fun vibes, eclectic lineups, and occasional free drinks make this four-day event one of our favorites each year. Badges get priority but it’s usually pretty easy to get in if you RSVP.
Chive TV Takeover at the Westin Pool Deck: “Azul Turns Verde” 2–11pm • Westin Austin Downtown, 310 East 5th Street • RSVP required Three-day event with 21 bands and free cocktails from Sailor Jerry, Reyka Vodka, and Hendricks Gin.
Float The Goat 4pm-1am • Love Goat, 2716 Guadalupe St. • RSVP requested Free showcase on the UT Drag. $5 donation gets you free drinks courtesy of Captain Morgan and Smirnoff Vodka.
