Bird, Tiger, Serpents and a Pair of Antlers: Warring States Art Device

Another remarkable sur of the pre-Taoist period.

The sculptural group is dominated by a mighty Bird, whose wings are complemented by antlers. Some have rashly classified it as the Phoenix, according to another version it is a Crane. However, I would warn against light-minded ornithological typing. The thumbnail Tiger serves as a pedestal for the Bird, pressing two serpentine bodies with its paws. The coiled snakes are devouring a pair of fliers.

The artifact may turn out to be a drum stand common at the time. Other figurines of antlered birds standing on tigers are known. This common motif unites the spiritual animals of the Lower and Upper Worlds. The amalgamous zoomorphic imagery is probably of shamanic origin.

Antlered and winged beings were also a widespread pattern in depiction of the zhenmushou (鎮墓獸), tomb guardians. The solemn or ferocious creatures served as the owner's spiritual animals in the afterlife and guides on the ascent to Heavens.

The entire lacquered wood sculpture group is painted black with subtle gold and red ornamentation. The object was unearthed from the Tomb No. 1 in Jiuliandun (九連墩1號墓), Zaoyang, Hubei. Now it is in Hubei Provincial Museum (湖北省族館).

週末に数年ぶりに行った日系バザーで出会った塗りの菓子鉢セット。 見たこともない植物柄と鮮やかな赤と格安の値段に惹かれて買った後に気が付いたんだけど、「琉球塗り」の漆器だった。 菓子鉢の裏には1959年の宮崎県の発電所(現存してる)の竣工記念の文字が。 さらに箱の上には北海道の市立稚内病院(こちらも現存)の落成記念の文字…？ そして箱の中にはMITSUKOSHIの商標が。 琉球塗りなるものをググったら、この植物はパパイヤだった！ あと、象牙っぽい和菓子用のフォーク？と竹の取り箸も付いていた。 器自身は新品同様なので使われずに長い間眠っていたのかも？ 60年以上前の沖縄の職人さんが作られた漆器が、九州の発電所か北海道の病院の記念品として三越(東京？)を通じて販売されて、巡り巡って沖縄復帰50年の日にはるばるカナダのバンクーバーのクラフターである私の元に来てくれたのどうもありがとうという気持ち。 とても美しいです。 お正月はもちろん、普段和菓子やケーキを食べる時にも大事に使うぞ〜。 I found a beautiful, more than 63-year-old lacquered bowl & small plate set originally from Okinawa (South Island of Japan), at a Japanese spring bazaar in Vancouver a few days ago. The Nagano Olympic medals combined the Maki-e techniques of sprinkling gold and silver powder on a pattern drawn in lacquer, the cloisonné technique of baking vitreous enamels, and the use of photographic technology in the metal processing.

“To convey local characteristics, the 1998 medals were created in Kiso lacquer. The decoration technique adopted was embossed gilding with shippoyaki (i.e. cloisonné techniques) and precision metalwork. The obverse represents the rising sun in Maki-e, surrounded by olive branches and accompanied by the emblem in cloisonné. The reverse is mainly in lacquer. It represents the emblem of the Games in Maki-e, with the sun rising over the Shinshu mountains. The lacquered parts were done individually by artists from the Kiso region.” (Source)

For the 1992 Albertville Olympic Games held in France, the medals were made of crystal and were representative of France. Looking back now, it was only natural that for the Olympics in Nagano, I would think, Let’s make medals using lacquer, a representative craft of Japan.
