Varda, Lady of the Stars, who knows all the regions of Eä. Too great is her beauty to be declared in the words of Men or of Elves; for the light of Ilúvatar lives still in her face. In light is her power and her joy.
Definitely one of my favourite artworks so far.

Ok, I checked with the Book, and Silmarillion clearly states that Finarfin ruled over Noldor who stayed in Aman, and that these Noldor went to Middle Earth with Vanyar during War of Wrath. So this is absolutely an AU but imagine:
Vanyar took over Noldor lands, assimilating the leftover Noldor into their numbers.
It wouldn't even be that much of a stretch. Silm said that only every 1 in 10 elves stayed in Tirion and I doubt numbers got that much bigger when Finarfin and his people came back. Tirion definitely became a ghost town after The Flight. They had to rearrange everything! And there was a lot of grief among the Noldor: over Finwe, over family members who decided to go to ME, over the Trees (still no Sun and Moon), over the happy times that are over.
Who would want to be a ruler in this situation? Not Finarfin, that's for sure. But he's Finwe's son, so he has the bloodline. He has a bloodline, so he has a duty, and if he has a duty, there's nothing to be done. He's stuck with the job.
Then Indis/Ingwion/Ingwe himself offer to come to Tirion and help him with his kingly duties. Finarfin feels grateful, feels guilty over what Noldor did at Alqualonde (coming from a guy who Actually did nothing wrong), his wife left (him?) his side to go help her father and her people, his children Definitely left him. He accepts the help.
And Vanyar are helping! With administration and practical concerns, like where everyone should live now when a single Noldo living in their old house can have 3 streets to themselves each. But more importantly, they are messengers between Noldor and Teleri, who Finarfin Has to make amends to even if he doesn't know how. Teleri don't want to see any Noldo in their lands, so Vanyar messengers it is (Valar are unresponsive, thinking up the Sun and Moon).
Finarfin is doing a good job, but depending on what is practically another country to solve your problems is always tricky, and he isn't ambitious. Noldor are NOT doing well and are grateful for help, even if Before it would have hurt their collective pride (but then again, pride in what? Inventing murder? The morals are low). Ingwe is suggesting a deeper collaboration between their people and an general overlook over Noldor.
Why not? Finarfin is of Finwe's line, but he's also of Ingwe's. And wasn't Ingwe always the High King of all the elves in Aman? And he's feeding them cause his brothers' forces took most of their provisions and it's still dark and it will take a while before they relearn how to harvest under the stars. So while Noldor figure that out, why not give over some administrative power to Vanyar? Noldor judgement is probably still clouded by Morgoth's lies.
Things of course change when The Sun and Moon finally happen but the change happens, again, in Vanyar favour - they trusted the Valar who salvaged and restored The Light! They get things Right! Noldor want to get things Right too! (Vanyar clothing and customs become fashion with the same intensity as when Indis wed Finwe. Noldor are ashamed of themselves still. Teleri fashion is really not an option).
So by the time War of Wrath happens, Finarfin is not a High King, but a vassal to High King. And everyone is really cool with that.
Noldor of Middle Earth find that insane in a polite, half condensending and half betrayed way (like they can talk). Then Finarfin is the brother who, you know, actually DEFEATS Morgoth, so everyone has to reconsider their opinions on the matter.
Noldor who come back to Aman, by sailing or by reembodiment, experience a bigger culture shock than expected. Because even in the Blessed Realm, things change.

Hey Sherry,
How do you think the Valar Ladies would react to their (s/o) correcting them if they mispronounce a word?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
politely thanks you and repeats their sentence with the correct pronunciation. they might be a little bashful and have a bit of a sheepish smile but they are grateful that you corrected them. “thank you my darling, what would I ever do without you hmm?”
vana, 𝒏𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒏𝒂, nessa, 𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒆

stops what they're saying. stares at you - to the point that you try to decipher whether or not it's a glare. is silent for an uncomfortable amount of time before smiling and going - “well aren’t you just the master of pronunciation?” gives you a little kiss on the cheek but you have no idea whether it’s a playful or passive-aggressive one

Galadriel
Tumblr media
Galadriel, the lady of light.
"Galadriel est une elfe Noldor, fille de Finarfin et sœur de Finrod. Elle fait partie des leaders de la rébellion contre les Valar. Mariée avec Celeborn de Doriath, elle reste avec lui en Terre du Milieu à la fin du Premier Âge. Dans les bois de Lothlórien, qu'elle gouverne avec Celeborn, elle est la gardienne de Nenya, l'Anneau de l'Eau."

My take on Varda and her handmaiden Ilmarë. I headcanon Ilmarë being the light of dawn and twilight as opposed to Varda being the light of stars.

That said I also work in references to the Sandman in my Tolkien works
To start with the obvious, Irmo, Lord of Lorien, Lord of Dreams and Nightmares is blatantly Morpheus. He wears black clothes, has eyes that are literal fields of Night lit by Varda's lights, and where he shows up he has that charming and sinister vibe Morpheus always does....and the utter inability to function as a person among people that Morpheus also does.
For the other Nienna the Weeper is Despair, and is noted to be this repeatedly as she is reference as wearing a hook at points and to have flashes at times of being the second Despair's appearance when clad in the image of her own thoughts and not the oversized Elf the Quendi tend to see the Valar as.
Despair is also the Greek Goddess Algos, who embodies.....despair and grief.
One of Despair's many functions is the carrying of grief and the realities of grieving and the memories of the dead, and it is this facet of her that pops up again and again in various mythologies where she's one of the most frequent Endless to find her way to making an appearance.
And yes, in my takes on Tolkien's legendarium, this does make Despair one of the most powerful of entities because it is her who teaches the youthful Olorin of the Vardarin the ways of mercy, pity, compassion, sorrow, and that there is a great power to be had in things that might otherwise seem weak or worthy of being despised.
This is one of the things I mean with the various tales and things that can be done with the various Endless and the wider range of their facets. If I didn't have major depression IRL I would make much greater use of Despair and the ways this could be used, but she's basically a character equivalent of Russian Roulette for me due to that so she's used more sparingly but with great power where she is used.

✨Lady of Light✨
This is one of my favourite Galadriel shoots EVER (and just plain shoots tbh). I have never felt more ethereal than in these photos, and I am forever grateful that @lizabetroberts was able and willing to fit me into her packed New England shoot schedule! She is such a gem to work with and she brought this otherworldly quality that was absolutely magical. ✨
(Also my makeup and wig were just cooperating so well that day—blessings from the Valar!)
Costume/crown made by me!

Lmao imagine if a couple wanted to get married in Lindon or Imladris and saw Elrond and was like “sure why not” and just, asked him to witness their vows in place of any actual maiar or valar.
Like the relationship between the elves in the Valar-Only-Mildly-Care Place and the Valar/Maiar themselves has got to still be stiff since elves are stupidly stubborn about holding grudges, so imagine if a couple just went “fuck the valinor glowsticks, Lord Elrond has been feeding us well and sheltering us for over a century. He’s got some ainur blood anyway.”
So they ask Elrond to be witness and he agrees thinking they just want a lord’s blessing or something and then-
“[Elvish Marriage Vows] we swear in the name of Lord Elrond Peredhel and Eru Illuvatar [More Marriage Vows]”
And at this point Elrond just has to roll with it but he bluescreens later while Erestor and Glorfindel laugh at him (Celebrian and or Gil-Galad too if they’re around)
Bonus points if It becomes a tradition in Imladris/Lindon even though he neutrally suggests a vala instead every time like
Elrond, trying not to get smited as soon as he steps foot into Valinor: hey Lady Yavanna is pretty cool though, right?
Elven Couple, exiled thousands of years ago and still frost-bitten: yes, pity there were no flowers in the Grinding Ice, my Lord. Anyways, would you mind being a witness to our wedding ceremony?”
Elrond starts glowing slightly and never lives it down. He goes to Valinor and people still ask him out of tradition or genuine respect and the Valar just have to put a small tapestry of Elrond as a patron of unions or something so they can claim some sort of control over the situation.
Elrond is mortified, and nobody lets him live it down.

LOTR/ The Hobbit Preference: How You Met (2/4)
(1) (3) (4)
Kili
Tumblr media
You and Kili meet during the quest to reclaim Erebor. Oddly enough you arrived on the quest right as the company were in the middle of fighting off a bunch of orcs. Gandalf was relieved to see you but the presence of such a cute human woman seemed to confused the rest of the company.
“Y/N! Thank the Valar you’re here!” Gandalf shouted as you walked into the fight.
Kili was confused and as he looked to see the sweet looking woman, he was awestruck. His awe and confusion only intensified as you were running towards him sword drawn.
“Get down!” He heard you shout as you pushed him aside, your blade landing in the guts of an orc.
Before he had the chance to thank you, you were off. Managing to slay just as many as the rest of the company combined, they all looked at you in awe.
“Guess I’ll be a good asset to the team.” You smile at the group of dwarves as you make your way back over to them.
“Especially to keep you safe.” You wink at Kili, causing the prince to smirk and blush.
Legolas
Tumblr media
Legolas and you meet when he goes to Rohan to meet with his friend Eomer. You worked as a barmaid at one of the pubs in town and manage to make the sweet elf blush.
“Hello, your highness. The regular today?” You ask as you approach the table Eomer and Legolas sat at.
“Yes and please, just Eomer.” He politely replies.
“So sorry, and who is our lovely elf friend?” You ask smirking as you turned to a very cute blushing Legolas.
“This is Legolas. He is the prince of the woodland realm.” Eomer introduced.
“Would you like me to call you ‘your highness’ or just Legolas, sweetheart?” You ask the cute elf, now completely ignoring Eomer.
“Uh, ahem, a-ah, ju-just Legolas, is fine.” He shyly stutters out, earning a chuckle disguised as a cough from his friend, and sweet giggle from you.
“How long are you in town for, Legolas?” You ask him, your whole body now facing Legolas.
“Uh-ah, a-a couple more days.” He replies as a blush grows on his pale cheeks.
“Well I guess you’ll have to come back before you leave so you can take me somewhere nice.” You smirk and wink as you turn around, leaving a smirking Eomer and a blushing Legolas.
Lindir
Tumblr media
Lindir and you meet when your friend Bard takes you to Rivendell for a spring festival. You watch Lindir play so beautifully that you become enthralled.
As Lindirs performance comes to an end you can’t help but enthusiastically cheer louder than the rest of the audience, embarrassing you slightly but leaving a light blush on Lindirs cheeks.
“You play so beautifully. We don’t have music like that where I’m from; your music sounds like something from a lovely dream.” You can’t help but gush at the sweet elf.
“We-well, thank you very much, I appreciated your applause. It’s not the response I usually get from other elves but that’s not necessarily a bad thing, my lady.” He confessed.
“I’m glad you appreciated it, I was a little embarrassed but I’m glad it brought you joy. I’m not very used to elven culture.” You shyly smile.
“Perhaps I could show you around the festivities, make you feel a bit more comfortable.” He offered.
“That sounds lovely.” You agree as you take the arm he offers.

Happy Ostara/Easter/belated Spring Equinox 😊🌸🌿 🐰🥚🍫! . ✨Valar and Valier series (late 2000s)✨ - 🌳🌿Yavanna Kementári🌿🌳 Initial practice sketch, the final painting and a couple of details. . I now prefer to headcanon Yavanna as dark-skinned, but I quite like how this watercolour turned out - especially the gradation of the different greens in the dress and mantle, and the trees in the background. I also love Alan Lee's original drawing on which this painting is based 🌿💚 (swipe for the comparison! Original is black and white, coloured by me as a guide for the painting). . Some years ago I started a 'Valar and Valier' project in which I took an existing painting/drawing as reference/inspiration to draw/paint one of the Valar. So far, I've done Varda, Yavanna, Nienna, Mandos and Aulë, and I also have some sketches of Nessa, Vána and Estë. Hope to get back to this project sometime! . . 🎨Media: Graphite, watercolours, inks, ink wash . 🌱References: Alan Lee's drawing of the Celtic fae Ladies of the Land of the Young, for the book Faeries.
